Abstract

In a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC the spin alignment parameter η= 1 2 (2ϱ 00 − ϱ 11 − ϱ −1−1 ) is measured for ϱ0 mesons produced in deep inelastic charged-current antineutrino and neutrono interactions on neon. In the current fragmentation region η is found to be η v =0.48±0.27 ( stat. )±0.15 ( syst. ) for v Ne and ηv=0.12±0.20 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.) for vNe interactions

Abstract

We report on the investigation of the final state in interactions of quasi-real photons with protons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. Evidence for hard interactions is seen in both single particle spectra and jet formation. The data can best be described by inclusion of resolved photon processess as predicted by QCD.

Abstract

The coherent production of 3π systems by charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the bubble chamber BEBC exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The coherent signal is attributed mainly to (ρπ) production, where the (ρπ) system is either non-resonant or comes from the decay of a1 mesons. The kinematical variables and the total cross section are compared with the predictions of the meson dominance model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Evidence of the production of the Ds∗-(2111) meson in v μ Ne collisions is presented. The Ds∗- production rates the Ds−→φπ− branching fraction is estimated to be (2.3±0.7) × 10−3 of all charged currents having a hadronic mass W above 3 GeV.

Abstract

Holography has been used successfully in combination with conventional optics for the first time in a large cryogenic bubble chamber, the 15-Foot Bubble Chamber at Fermilab, during a physics run. The innovative system combined the reference beam with the object beam, illuminating a conical volume of $\sim 1.4$~m$^3$. Bubble tracks from neutrino interactions with a width of $\sim 120\;\mu$m have been recorded with good contrast. The ratio of intensities of the object light to the reference light striking the film is called the Beam Branching Ratio. We obtained in our experiment an exceedingly small minimum-observable ratio of $(0.54 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-7}$. The technology has the potential for a wide range of applications.

Abstract

Technical aspects of the three major components of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA are described. This paper covers the detector status up to the end of 1994 when a major upgrading of some of its elements was undertaken. A description of the other elements of the detector and some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given in a paper previously published in this journal.

Abstract

The coherent production of [pi] and [rho] mesons in [nu][sub [mu]]([bar [nu]][sub [mu]])--neon charged-current interactions has been studied using the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a heavy Ne-H[sub 2] mix and exposed to the Teva- tron quadrupole triplet (anti)neutrino beam. The [nu][sub [mu]] ([bar [nu]][sub [mu]]) beam had an average energy of 80 GeV (70 GeV). From a sample corresponding to approximately 28 000 charged-current interactions, net signals of (53[plus minus]9) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]] coherent events and (19[plus minus]7) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]][pi][sup 0] coherent events are extracted. For [ital E][gt]10 GeV, the coherent pion production cross section is determined to be (3.2[plus minus]0.7)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus whereas the coherent [rho] production cross section is (2.1[plus minus]0.8)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus. These cross sections and the kinematical characteristics of the coherent events at [vert bar][ital t][vert bar][lt]0.1 GeV[sup 2] are found to be in general agreement with the predictions of a model based on the hadron dominance and, in the pion case, on the partially conserved axial-vector current hypothesis. Also discussed is the coherent production of systems consisting of three pions.

Abstract

The diffractive production of charmed strangeD s * and possiblyD s mesons by neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in hydrogen, deuterium and neon targets is observed. The slope parameter of thet distribution is 3.3±0.8 (GeV)−2. The production rate per charged current neutrino interaction with an isoscalar target times the D s + →φτ+ branching fraction is (1.03±0.27)×10−4.

Abstract

From an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber to the Tevatron quadrupole triplet neutrino beam, we have determined the ratio of neutral-current (NC) to charged-current (CC) interactions to be 0.288{plus minus}0.032 for events with visible hadron momentum above 10 GeV/{ital c}. The mean {nu}({bar {nu}}) event energy is 150 (110) GeV, which is higher than that for any previous beam. This result agrees with those from previous experiments at lower energies. The NC/CC ratio is derived for a combined sample of {nu} and {bar {nu}} events. A value of 0.274{plus minus}0.038 is obtained for the dominant {nu} component assuming {bar {nu}} NC/CC=0.39{plus minus}0.08. For events with visible hadron momentum above 25 GeV/{ital c}, where the neutral hadron contamination remaining in the NC sample is assumed to be negligible, the combined NC/CC is 0.323{plus minus}0.025 and the {ital K}{sup 0} production rates are 0.375{plus minus}0.064 per CC and 0.322{plus minus}0.073 per NC event. The corresponding {Lambda} rates are 0.161{plus minus}0.030 per CC and 0.113{plus minus}0.030 per NC event. The {ital K}{sup 0} and {Lambda} distributions of the fractional hadron energy variable {ital z} in NC events are consistent with those in CC events.

Charged-current neutrino interactions have been analysed in a sample of pictures from BEBC equipped with a TST. Using a method independent of both the neutrino flux and nuclear interaction corrections, the ratio R= σn/σp has been measured. The result is R=1.98±0.19 for the ratio of total cross sections. Abstract

The Λ 9 Li →π − + 9 Be ∗ →π − + p + 8 Li and Λ 9 B →π − + 9 C ∗ →π − + p + 8 B decay modes were investigated. The existence of an isospin - 3 2 state of 9Be, with excitation energy 18.6 ± 0.1 MeV and width Γ ≲ 300 keV has been established. From a reanalysis of European K− Collaboration emulsion data, new values of the binding energies of 9ΛLi and 9ΛB hypernuclei were found as 8.50 ± 0.12 MeV and 8.29 ± 0.18 MeV, respectively.

Charged-current neutrino and antineutrino interaction cross sections have been measured in the energy range 10 to 50 GeV using BEBC filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture. At these energies, σ/E was measured to be (0.73±0.08) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for neutrinos and (0.32±0.06) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for antineutrinos.

Backward proton and pion production is studied in ν and {Mathematical expression} charged current interactions in neon. The results are compared with other experiments and theory. The complete backward proton data is compatible with protons produced by reinteractions in the nucleus. However in events with only one proton, muon variables appear correlated to those for the backward proton, as expected by the two-nucleon correlation model. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.

Decay branching ratios of the\({}_\Lambda ^4 He\)c hypernucleus have been measured using a sample of hypernuclei produced in the interactions at rest of K−-mesons in a helium bubble chamber. The observation of 6 π+-mesonic decays leads to a value of 0.043±0.017 for the π+-mesonic/π−-mesonic decay branching ratio. No examples of the charged two-body nonmesonic decays of the hypernucleus were observed.

Abstract

An event with the decay chain Σ c + → Λ c + + π 0 , Λ c + → K − + p + π + , has been observed in an exposure of BEBC, equipped with a track sensitive target, to the wide band neutrino beam from the SPS at CERN. The event has a unique three constraint kinematic fit to the ΔS = − ΔQ reaction v + p → μ − + p + K − + π + + π + + π 0 with both gammas from the π 0 decay detected. The proton and other final state particles are identified. The masses are M ( Λ c + ) = 2290 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 , M ( Σ c + ) = 2457 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c + ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 168 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 . Including other data one obtains M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Σ c + ) = 0 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. A study has been made of the decay sequence 12 Λ B → π − + 12 C ∗ → π − + 4 He + 4 He + 4 He . From a comparison of the measured branching ratios to certain states of 12C and the angular correlations observed in their decays with those predicted by Zieminska and Dalitz, it is concluded that the spin of the hypernucleus 12ΛB strongly favours the value of unity.

A study has been made of K--meson interactions at rest in the CERN 1.1 m3 heavy-liquid bubble chamber filled with a mixture of hydrocarbons. The emission frequency of Λ0-hyperons following K--meson absorptions in carbon nuclei is determined to be 0.68 ± 0.02. A detailed study of the (Λ0π-) final state has allowed an estimate to be made of the internal-conversion probability C(Σ+) of {perspective}+-hyperons produced in association with π--mesons. The result is C(Σ+)=0.62 ± 0.02. The contribution of the direct channel to the (Λ0π-) final state is found to be 0.23 ± 0.01. Abstract

Kinematic analysis of simple hypernuclear production reactions has produced a sample of hypernuclei of ΛB, ΛC and ΛN with negligible background, and a much smaller sample of ΛBe. The values of the non-mesonic to π− mesonic ratio Q− for the above samples are 5.5 ± 0.5 and 4.3 ± 1.1, respectively. A sub-sample of 11ΛB hypernuclei was separated on the basis of production via an excited state of Λ12C, giving Q− = 4.8 ± 1.1 for Λ11B. Assuming the Fermi gas model is applicable to nuclei of mass A ≈ 11, two independent means of analysis of the non-mesonic decays give values for the Λ-neutron stimulation fraction n of 0.41 ± 0.09 and 0.34 ± 0.07 for hypernuclei of charge 5 ≦ Z ≦ 7.

We have fully analysed all events with a single electron obtained in an exposure of BEBC to the 350 GeV wide-band neutrino beam at CERN. The data agrees well with expectations based on the calculated ν e flux and assuming μ−e universality. Using both the rate and the kinematic distributions, improved limits are set on ν e → ν X , ν μ → ν e , ν μ → ν τ mixing.

Abstract

A study is presented of μe events from an exposure of BEBC, filed with an heavyH 2/Ne mixture, to a wide band antineutrino beam at the CERN SPS. The promptμ + e − rate, based on the observation of 45 events withp μ>4 GeV/c andp e>0.8 GeV/c, is found to be 0.31±0.05±0.02%, in agreement with previous determinations made on much smaller statistics. The differential kinematical variables characterizing the events and the content of strange particles are as expected for the production of charmed hadrons which subsequently decay semi-leptonically. An upper limit of 2.0±10−4 at 90% C.L. is given for the production rate of promptμ + e + events. No evidence is found for a significant production of Beauty hadrons.

A study has been made of K − meson interactions at rest in the CERN 1.1 m 3 heavy liquid bubble chamber filled with a mixture of hydrocarbons. The data are used to determine (i) the internal conversion probability, C ( Σ − ), of Σ − hyperons produced in association with π + mesons by K − meson interactions in carbon nuclei, (ii) the relative emission frequencies of ( Σ + π − ) and ( Σ − π + ) pairs, E ( Σ + π − / Σ − π + ), and the emission frequency E ( Σ ± π ∓ /K − ), of ( Σ ± π ∓ ) pairs per K − meson absorption in carbon, (iii) the branching fraction, P ( Σ − π + /K − ), for the primary process K − + p → Σ − + π + in carbon and (iv) the trapping probability, T ( Λ °), for Λ ° hyperons produced by Σ − hyperon interactions in carbon nuclei. The results are: C ( Σ − ) = 0.38 ± 0.03, E ( Σ + π − / gS − π + ) = 1.25 +- 0.09, E ( Σ ± π −+ /K − ) = 0.164 ± 0.006, P ( Σ − π + /K − ) = 0.127 ± 0.004 and T ( Λ °) = 0.13 ± 0.04, where the errors quoted are statistical and correspond to one standard deviation. Possible systematic errors were estimated to be at most of the same order of magnitude as the statistical uncertainties.

A study is presented of dimuon events from an exposure of BEBC to a wide band ν beam from the CERN SPS. These data double the available statistics on ν induced dilepton events observed in bubble chambers. The relative production rate and V0 yield have been measured and found to agree with previous experiments. The analysis of several kinematical variables shows that the gros features of the data agree with the predictions of the GIM model. The masses of the charged Σ hyperons have been determined from the mean ranges of particles from the interactions of K− mesons at rest on hydrogen in emulsion, K− + p → Σ± + π∓, and also the mean rannge of the protons from Σ+ hyperons at rest, Σ+ → p + π0. The results are mΣ+ = 1189.39 ± 0.06 MeV/c2, mΣ− − mΣ+ = 7.91 ± 0.23 MeV/c2, which give mΣ−=1197.30±0.24 MeV/c2. The finding that the energy loss rate of low velocity negative particles is less than that of positive particles has been confirmed, but in contradiction with an earlier result, the range straggling for negative particles was not found to be anomalously high.

Abstract

The experimental results of a detailed analysis of the interactions of 800 MeV /c K− mesons which contain hyperfragments are presented. From this analysis the mean mass and charge numbers of the heavy spallation hyperfragments have been estimated. The mean momentum imparted to the “observed” heavy hyperfragments has been found to be of the order of 1000 MeV /c . A model has been considered in order to obtain some estimate of the relative contribution of the cascade and evaporation processes to the final momenta of “observable” heavy spallation hyperfragments.

A study has been made of the K− meson absorptions at rest in emulsion nuclei of the type K− + nucleus → π− + charged particle + hypernucleus. The existence of the particle unstable resonant state of the Λ12C hypernucleus, decaying via Λ 12 C → 1 H + Λ 11 B , has been firmly established. The excitation energy and natural width of this state are about 11 MeV and 0.4 MeV respectively.

Abstract

Among 1148 K/sup -/ stars observed in an IIford K5 stack, 390 pi - mesons and 12 doubtful pi -mesons were found. A pi /K/sup -/ ratio of STA39.2 + 1.3 plus or minus 2!% is given, higher than previous results. This value is subject to statistical fluotuations, errors in solid angle correction, and observational loss. Comparison with previous work shows that the scanning loss was chiefly among high-energy pi -mesons in K sigma /sub 1/ stars and multi- pronged events. This implies a larger proportion of LAMBDA /sup 0/ mesons produced in K/sup -/ + N interactions, and that pi -meson absorption is smaller than estimated. (T.R.H.)

The emission of hyperfragments and the formation of cryptofragments following the absorption at rest of Σ- hyperons in emulsion nuclei have been studied. Both these phenomena appear to occur less frequently than in the case of K- mesons absorptions. Abstract

A study has been made of the production of hyperfragments by the interactions of K−-mesons of 3.0 and 5.0 GeV/c momentum in nuclear emulsion. The observed frequencies of production, (3.0±0.1)% and (2.2±0.1)% respectively, are significantly smaller than at lower K−-meson momenta, while the range distributions show a relative increase in the number of hyperfragments of range greater than 5 µm. This increase is attributed to a larger contribution from the fragmentation process, which is especially significant at intermediate ranges [(10÷50) µm], and to greater mean ranges for the heavy hyperfragments, which broaden the peak at short ranges (⩽10 µm). The hyperfragments of range less than 10 µm are mainly heavy residual products of silver and bromine nuclei; their mass numbers differ on the average from those of the parent nuclei by about 30 and 35 nucleon masses for 3.0 and 5.0 GeV/c interactions respectively. Eight examples of π− mesonic decays of heavy hyperfragments, and one probable example of a double hyperfragment, have been observed.

The production of Λ and Σ0 hyperons by antineutrinos has been observed. These events have been used to estimate the production cross-section on protons. The result is compared with the predictions of the Cabibbo theory for the process ν p → μ + Λ .
