1. Diversity of soil biopores and their influence on soil water infiltration under various pedoclimatic conditions

Abstract

Despite the large contribution of macropores made by soil engineers to the soil macroporosity and water infiltration, few studies have addressed the specific contribution of soil engineer groups, dynamics of biopores and their efficiency in conducting water. Thus, we aimed to investigate the link between soil macrofauna, soil biopores and water infiltration under different pedoclimatic conditions. To do so, we conducted an experimentation in twelve study sites with a large longitudinal gradient from France to Vietnam. The experiment consisted in the field incubation of repacked soil in cores (15 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter) and controlling the activity of soil engineers in the manner of litter bag. For each site, soil columns were: (i) covered with a mesh (200µm) or not and (ii) with or without addition of organic residues to the soil surface. After 12 months, we measured (i) the 3D organization of biopores by X-ray computed tomography and (ii) the saturated hydraulic conductivity by Beerkan method. In addition, soil macrofauna communities and the 3D organization of biopores was measured in each study field. Addition of organic residues increased up to 2-fold the volume percentage of biopores which reached similar values than those observed for each study field. The co-inertia analysis between the data matrix characterizing the shape of biopores and the data matrix of the macrofauna communities showed no statistically significant correlation. Saturated hydraulic conductivity increased with the presence of biopores by 2 to 50-fold with the lowest increased in soils presenting largest saturated hydraulic conductivity. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that biopores are rapidly regenerated regardless the pedoclimatic conditions while the efficiency of biopores in conducting water is related to soil properties.

2. Effect of slope position on hydrochory processes: a natural rainfall study in tropical agroecosystem

Abstract

Soil erosion due to land use change and consequently biodiversity loss are major concerns in agricultural areas. However, the link between runoff, soil loss and plant dispersion by water also called hydrochory is not yet well understood, especially in tropical climate. The displacement of native plant seeds on the soil surface by runoff may be influenced by soil properties and by agricultural practices. This may in return affect or modify biodiversity in agroecosystems.This is why we propose to study the processes affecting seed displacement by runoff in steeply sloping maize field affected by rainfall and tillage erosion in Northern Thailand.After a first study under rainfall simulation in situ (Janeau et al. 2022), we present here a two years study under natural rainfall to assess the role of position in the catena and soil properties on seed displacement, soil loss and nutrient losses. We used 24 plots of 1 m2 located at four positions in the catena. Two treatments were tested: (1) conventional system with tillage and (2) biochar incorporated into the soil. We measured the displacement of seeds (only for treatment 1), runoff volume, soil and nutrient losses and soil surface features (for the two treatments) during two years of study.Preliminary results indicate a strong influence of catena position on all studied variables. This may be due to soil properties changing along the catena, as well as shape (concave or convex) of the slope position. As expected, rainfall intensity seemed influencing runoff and soil and nutrient losses, together with seed displacement.This study, under tropical climate and steep slope conditions, highlights differences in soil surface features and runoff along the catena. We should consider catena position for improving soil management and using appropriate agroecological practices.

Abstract

International audience; Termites are key soil bioturbators in tropical ecosystems. Apart from mound nests constructed by some advanced lineages, most of the species use their faeces, oral secretions, debris, or soil aggregates to protect themselves from predators and desiccation when they go out to forage. Although this soil ‘sheeting’ is considered to play a key role in soil functioning, the properties of this termite-made material has been poorly studied. The few available data showed that sheeting properties are highly variable with positive, neutral or negative impacts on soil C and clay content, and consequently on soil aggregate stability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the factors controlling the physical (particle size fractions and structural stability) and chemical (pH, electrical conductivity and carbon content) properties of soil sheeting produced by termite species encompassing all feeding and building categories using a dataset representative of an important diversity of biotopes coming from 21 countries from all continents colonized by termites. We showed that sheeting properties were explained by the properties of their environment, and especially by those of the bulk soil (linear relationships), followed in a lesser extent by the mean annual precipitation and biotope. Classic hypotheses related to termite feeding and building strategies were not hold by our analysis. However, the distinction of termites into fungus-growing and non-fungus growing species was useful when differentiating the impact of termites on soil electrical conductivity, C content, and structural stability. The large variability observed suggests the need to redefine termite functional groups based on their impacts on soil properties using a trait-based approach from morphological, anatomical and/or physiological traits.

4. Logging residues promote positive interactions between soil erosion, soil functioning and soil macrofauna diversity in young rubber plantations in Africa

Abstract

Soil erosion causes major problems of land degradation in agricultural systems leading to losses of soil fertility. Rubber tree is one of the main tropical perennial crops with about 13 million hectares of plantations worldwide in 2018. In the early stage of a rubber plantation, soil is especially vulnerable to degradations given the low canopy cover and heavy soil surface disturbance related to clear-cutting of the previous plantation. This study aims at assessing runoff and soil losses as well as understanding the main soil factors influencing soil erosion in a young rubber plantation in Côte d’Ivoire. We intensively measured soil runoff, soil detachment, soil structure maintenance and soil macrofauna for 2.5 years under different managements of logging residues and the use or not of a legume cover crop. The results showed that the restitution of logging residues has reduced runoff by 6 and soil losses by 14 compared to plot without logging residues, over the study period. The planting line where soil is kept bare was by far the most critical area in term of soil erosion. The restitution of logging residues significantly improved soil structure maintenance as well as soil macrofauna diversity. We found strong relationships between runoff, soil losses, soil structure and soil macrofauna diversity. These results evidence that the restitution of logging residues and the sowing of cover crop are appropriate agroecological practices in young rubber plantations. Our results suggest that keeping a cover in the planting line could be the most relevant lever to limit soil erosion in the context of the study.

There is an urgent need to develop appropriate agricultural practices that promote higher biodiversity and improve soil properties. Little is known about the processes of natural vegetation recovery after disturbance by human activities in tropical humid climates. This is particularly the case for dispersion by water (hydrochory) that affects seeds. The displacement of native plant seeds on the soil surface by runoff may be influenced by soil properties and by the use of biochar in agriculture. As these effects have not been documented in tropical agroecosystems and on steep slopes, we present here an in-field experiment on a steeply sloping maize field affected by rainfall and tillage erosion in Northern Thailand. Our objectives were to test the effect of catena position and biochar use on seed displacement, soil loss and nutrient losses. We used 24 plots of 1 m2 located at four positions in the catena. Two treatments were tested: (1) conventional system with tillage and (2) biochar incorporated into the soil. We measured the displacement of plastic beads (to imitate round seeds), runoff volume, soil and nutrient losses and soil surface features during in-situ rainfall simulations. After two simulated rainfall events and four natural rainfall events, total bead exportation was 7.2%. We found that catena position and biochar had an impact on runoff, soil and nutrient losses. In this study, previously incorporated biochar reappeared at the soil surface after 8 months under natural conditions and acted like a crust at the soil surface. This biochar crust increased runoff, increased potassium concentration and decreased phosphorus concentration in runoff, decreased bead displacement and had no effect on soil loss. This study, under tropical climate and steep slope conditions, highlights differences in soil surface features and runoff along the catena. We should consider catena position for improving soil management and using appropriate agroecological practices. Highlights: The effect of catena position and biochar use on seed displacement, soil loss and nutrient losses were tested. These effects have not been documented in tropical agroecosystems and steep slopes. Catena position and biochar use had an impact on runoff, soil and nutrient losses. Catena position for improving soil management and using agroecological practices should be considered.

Abstract

International audience; In tropical montane South-East Asia, recent changes in land use have induced increased runoff, soil erosion and in-stream suspended sediment loads. Land use change is also contributing to increased microbial pathogen dissemination and contamination of stream waters. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is frequently used as an indicator of faecal contamination. Field rain simulations were conducted to examine how E. coli is exported from the surface of upland, agricultural soils during runoff events. The objectives were to characterize the loss dynamics of this indicator from agricultural soils contaminated with livestock waste, and to identify the effect of splash on washoff. Experiments were performed on nine 1 m2 plots, amended or not with pig or poultry manure. Each plot was divided into two 0.5 m2 sub-plots. One of the two sub-plots was protected with a mosquito net for limiting the raindrop impact effects. Runoff, soil detachment by raindrop impact and its entrainment by runoff, and E. coli loads and discharge were measured for each sub-plot. The results show that raindrop impact strongly enhances runoff generation, soil detachment and entrainment and E. coli export. When the impact of raindrops was reduced with a mosquito net, total runoff was reduced by more than 50%, soil erosion was on average reduced by 90% and E. coli export from the amended soil surface was on average 3 to 8 times lower. A coupled physics-based approach was performed using the Cast3M platform for modelling the time evolutions of runoff, solid particles detachment and transfer and bacteria transport that were measured for one of the nine plots. After estimation of the saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil erodibility and attachment rate of bacteria, model outputs were consistent with measured runoff coefficients, suspended sediment and E. coli loads. Abstract

Mountain regions of the humid tropics are characterized by steep slopes and heavy rains. These regions are thus prone to both high surface runoff and soil erosion. In Southeast Asia, uplands are also subject to rapid land-use change, predominantly as a result of increased population pressure and market forces. Since 1998, the Houay Pano site, located in northern Lao PDR (19.85°N 102.17°E) within the Mekong basin, aims at assessing the long-term impact of the conversion of traditional slash-and-burn cultivation systems to commercial perennial monocultures such as teak tree plantations, on the catchment hydrological response and sediment yield. The instrumented site monitors hydro-meteorological and soil loss parameters at both microplot (1 m2) and small catchment (0.6 km2) scales. The monitored catchment is part of the network of critical zone observatories named Multiscale TROPIcal CatchmentS (M-TROPICS). The data shared by M-TROPICS in Houay Pano are (1) rainfall, (2) air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed, and global radiation, (3) catchment land use, (4) stream water level, suspended particulate matter, bed particulate matter and stones, (5) soil surface features, and (6) soil surface runoff and soil detachment. The dataset has already been used to interpret suspended particulate matter and bed particulate matter sources and dynamics, to assess the impact of land-use change on catchment hydrology, soil erosion, and sediment yields, to understand bacteria fate and weed seed transport across the catchment, and to build catchment-scale models focused on hydrology and water quality issues. The dataset may be further used to e.g. assess the role of headwater catchments in large tropical river basin hydrology, support the interpretation of new variables measured in the catchment (e.g. contaminants other than fecal bacteria), and assess the relative impacts of both climate and land-use change on the catchment.

International audience; Processes linked to woody plant encroachment in grassland are still not well understood, especially the interactions between trees and soil water availability. Our aim was to study the depth of water uptake by trees in grassland and its controlling factors. We studied water uptake in Vachellia sieberiana trees (hereafter called 'acacias') in a humid grassland of South Africa. We especially studied the effect of size classes of acacias and their position in the catena on water potential (ψ) of acacia leaves and water uptake depth of acacias across seasons, as inferred from isotope δ 18 O values of soil and stem water samples. Abstract

International audience; The formation of deep gullies (called ‘dongas’ locally) in rangeland in KwaZulu‐Natal Province in South Africa is a natural phenomenon. These U‐shaped, very wide gullies have considerable lateral expansion due to the episodic collapse of sidewalls.The dongas have developed in duplex soils such as Luvisols and Lixisols formed on Permian sedimentary rocks or unconsolidated Quaternary colluvium. This study combined morphological, mineralogical and chemical characterization with measurements of grain‐size content, structural stability and the complete shrinkage curve to detect changes in soil properties of the different horizons located in the gully banks.The different soil horizons present clear and sharp differences in physical and mineralogical properties. The topsoil with complete grass cover is very resistant to soil detachment. However, the leached E horizon and the BC horizon have low structural stability. The soil profile down to and including the Bt horizon contains exclusively illite in the clay fraction, while the BC colluvial layer and the C horizon (mudstone) contain expandable interstratified illite–smectite. The Bt horizon has a high water content at saturation and high shrinkage, while the BC and C horizons have a high residual shrinkage and a very low water content at saturation.Because this type of gully expansion is not significantly linked to slope value or the stream power index (SPI) at the gully head, to land‐use change, high rainfall intensities or the threshold of concentrated runoff being exceeded at the gully head, other causes were investigated. It was concluded that the heterogeneity between horizons with different mineralogical properties and structural stabilities, soil types and parent material, anisotropic water‐saturation and shrink‐swell properties are of major importance. This heterogeneity between different soil horizon morphologies and their physical properties can explain why the relationship between the critical slope and the drainage area for gully initiation showed a threshold for gullying much lower than that found elsewhere.

Abstract

Due to high rainfall erosivity and rapid land-use changes, South-East Asia is one of the hot spots of soil degradation worldwide. In recent decades, several studies showed that the expansion of rubber tree (RT) plantations into previously forested areas has caused a major increase in soil erosion. However, the effects of cropland conversion to RT plantations on surface runoff and soil detachment are still unclear. Here we show that mature RT plantations considerably increase runoff and soil detachment compared to annual crops or young RT plantations with intercrop, mostly due to the absence of understorey. Monitoring 1 m2 microplots over four years in mountainous Northern Thailand, we found that runoff and detachment increased with time since the onset of the rainy season and with rainfall height, but more so in mature RT plantations than in young RT plantations and maize. This led to much higher annual soil detachment in mature RT plantations (5.7 kg/m2 on average) than in maize and young RT plantations with intercrop (0.36 kg/m2). We identified two main factors explaining this difference: first, rubber tree leaf litter, although abundant, seemed ineffective in reducing runoff at the end of the rainy season. Secondly, the cover by low-growing plants in mature rubber tree plantation was usually sparse and provided little protection. In particular we showed that increasing the cover by low-growing plants from quasi-null cover to >31% cover decreased runoff coefficient by 32%. Our results demonstrate that afforestation by RT, at least under current management practices and on steep slopes, is overall detrimental to soil conservation but that its effects could be mitigated by the adoption of less intense weeding practices.

Total suspended sediment (TSS) concentration was higher in TWO (1.23 +/- 0.21 g L-1) than in TW (0.37 +/- 0.16 g L-1) and UR (0.44 +/- 0.2 g L-1), whereas dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was lower under TWO (3.8 +/- 0.7 mg L-1) than under TW or UR (13.4 +/- 7.5 and 9.57 +/- 4.8 mg L-1, respectively). Runoff from TWO harboured the highest proportion of bacterial taxa common to soil (27% and 29.5%) as compared with TW (22.8% and 13%) and UR (17.3% and 7%) for both particle attached and free-living fractions, respectively. Bacterial community export in surface runoff was driven by changes in DOC and TSS, suggesting that eroded soil particles simultaneously carry organic carbon and attached bacterial taxa in surface runoff. Consequently, the export of soil functional groups relating to organic carbon degradation and nitrogen cycle was higher under TWO than in TW or UR. Our results underline that teak plantations with unsustainable practices such as the removal of understory degrades soil functions and accelerates land degradation through soil erosion and surface runoff on the long term.

Abstract

International audience; Tropical montane areas of Southeast Asia are exposed to high-intensity rainfall during the monsoon period. This is particularly problematic in areas where soils on steep slopes are cultivated as it can lead to heavy runoff, high soil erosion, and water pollution. The objective of this paper is to analyse the effect of the impact of raindrops on the dynamics of runoff on such steep fields. Experiments under simulated rainfall were performed at the plot scale (1 m2) to quantify water export from the surface of upland agricultural soils during overland flow events. Four 1 m2 plots were divided in duplicated treatment groups: (a) control with no amendments, and (b) amended with pig manure. Each plot was divided into two 0.5 m2 rectangular subplots. One subplot was designated as a rain splash treatment; the other sub-plot was covered with a 2 mm grid size wire screen that was located 12 cm above the soil surface. The purpose of the screen was to break the raindrops into fine droplets and to reduce fall height in order to drastically reduce their kinetic energy. Runoff was measured for each sub-plot. The results show that raindrop impact drastically enhances runoff generation on both bare soils and on manure amended soils. When the impact of raindrops was limited by screening, runoff was higher on amended soils than on bare soils.The temporal evolution of runoff was correctly modelled using a soil hydraulic conductivity that exponentially decreases over time of exposure to rainfall. Both experimental and modelling results showed that droplet energy induces a rapid evolution of the hydraulic properties of the soil surface due to crusting, resulting in a reduction of hydraulic conductivity and a concomitant increase in runoff rate.

Abstract

Of the blue carbon sinks, mangroves have one of the highest organic matter (OM) storage capacities in their soil due to low mineralization processes resulting from waterlogging. However, mangroves are disappearing worldwide because of demographic increases. In addition to the loss of CO2 fixation, mangrove clearing can strongly affect soil characteristics and C storage. The objectives of the present study were to quantify the evolution of soil quality, carbon stocks and carbon fluxes after mangrove clearing. Sediment cores to assess physico-chemical properties were collected and in situ CO2 fluxes were measured at the soil-air interface in a mangrove of Northern Vietnam. We compared a Kandelia candel mangrove forest with a nearby zone that had been cleared two years before the study. Significant decrease of clay content and an increase in bulk density for the upper 35cm in the cleared zone were observed. Soil organic carbon (OC) content in the upper 35cm decreased by >65% two years after clearing. The quantity and the quality of the carbon changed, with lower carbon to nitrogen ratios, indicating a more decomposed OM, a higher content of dissolved organic carbon, and a higher content of inorganic carbon (three times higher). This highlights the efficiency of mineralization processes following clearing. Due to the rapid decrease in the soil carbon content, CO2 fluxes at sediment interface were >50% lower in the cleared zone. Taking into account carbonate precipitation after OC mineralization, the mangrove soil lost ~10MgOCha-1yr-1 mostly as CO2 to the atmosphere and possibly as dissolved forms towards adjacent ecosystems. The impacts on the carbon cycle of mangrove clearing as shown by the switch from a C sink to a C source highlight the importance of maintaining these ecosystems, particularly in a context of climate change.

Abstract

Because of technical difficulties in measuring soil properties at a large scale, little is known about the effect of soil properties on the spatial distribution of trees in grasslands. We were interested in the associations of soil properties with the phenomenon of tree encroachment, where trees increase in density at the expense of grasses. The spatial variation of soil properties and especially soil texture may modify the properties of hydraulic conductivity, and the availability of soil water and mineral nutrients, which in turn may affect the spatial distribution of encroaching trees. Through the development of a geophysical method (Slingram) using an electromagnetic device EM38 and Bayesian inversion, we were able to accurately map soil electrical conductivity (EC) of a Luvisol in a grassland of South Africa. EC measured at the 08 to 2m depth on a 15ha area is a proxy for clay content and was correlated with the spatial distribution of four size classes of the encroaching Acacia sieberiana. Tree location (all sizes considered) was significantly correlated with EC. Tall acacias (>3m height) were totally absent from patches with EC >24mSm(-1). For all other size classes from medium trees to seedlings, tree density decreased with increasing EC. This suggests that high clay contents at depth associated with high EC values may prevent the establishment and/or survival of trees and influence the spatial distribution of A.sieberiana. Abstract

Lack of access to clean water and adequate sanitation continues to be a major brake on development. Here we present the results of a 12-month investigation into the dynamics of Escherichia coli, a commonly used indicator of faecal contamination in water supplies, in three small, rural catchments in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. We show that land use and hydrology are major controlling factors of E. coli concentrations in streamwater and that the relative importance of these two factors varies between the dry and wet seasons. In all three catchments, the highest concentrations were observed during the wet season when storm events and overland flow were highest. However, smaller peaks of E. coli concentration were also observed during the dry season. These latter correspond to periods of intense farming activities and small, episodic rain events. Furthermore, vegetation type, through land use and soil surface crusting, combined with mammalian presence play an important role in determining E. coli loads in the streams. Finally, sampling during stormflow revealed the importance of having appropriate sampling protocols if information on maximum contamination levels is required as grab sampling at a fixed time step may miss important peaks in E. coli numbers.

Abstract

The Red River is the second largest river in Viet Nam and constitutes the main water source for a large percentage of the population of North Viet Nam. Here we present the results of an annual survey of Escherichia coli (EC) and Total Coliforms (TC) in the Red River basin, North Viet Nam. The objective of this work was to obtain information on faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) numbers over an annual cycle and, secondly, to determine the die-off rates of these bacterial indicators. Monthly observations at 10 stations from July 2013–June 2014 showed that TC and EC reached as high as 39100 cfu (colony forming units) 100 ml−1 and 15300 colonies 100 ml−1, respectively. We observed a significant seasonal difference for TC (p −1 to a maximum of 1.13 d−1 for EC and from 0.17 d−1 to 1.33 d−1 for TC. Die-off rates were significantly higher for free bacteria than for total (free + particle attached) bacteria, suggesting that particle attachment provided a certain level of protection to FIB in this system.

Abstract

The humid tropics are exposed to an unprecedented modernisation of agriculture involving rapid and mixed land-use changes with contrasted environmental impacts. Afforestation is often mentioned as an unambiguous solution for restoring ecosystem services and enhancing biodiversity. One consequence of afforestation is the alteration of streamflow variability which controls habitats, water resources, and flood risks. We demonstrate that afforestation by tree planting or by natural forest regeneration can induce opposite hydrological changes. An observatory including long-term field measurements of fine-scale land-use mosaics and of hydrometeorological variables has been operating in several headwater catchments in tropical southeast Asia since 2000. The GR2M water balance model, repeatedly calibrated over successive 1-year periods and used in simulation mode with the same year of rainfall input, allowed the hydrological effect of land-use change to be isolated from that of rainfall variability in two of these catchments in Laos and Vietnam. Visual inspection of hydrographs, correlation analyses, and trend detection tests allowed causality between land-use changes and changes in seasonal streamflow to be ascertained. In Laos, the combination of shifting cultivation system (alternation of rice and fallow) and the gradual increase of teak tree plantations replacing fallow led to intricate streamflow patterns: pluri-annual streamflow cycles induced by the shifting system, on top of a gradual streamflow increase over years caused by the spread of the plantations. In Vietnam, the abandonment of continuously cropped areas combined with patches of mix-trees plantations led to the natural re-growth of forest communities followed by a gradual drop in streamflow. Soil infiltrability controlled by surface crusting is the predominant process explaining why two modes of afforestation (natural regeneration vs. planting) led to opposite changes in streamflow regime. Given that commercial tree plantations will continue to expand in the humid tropics, careful consideration is needed before attributing to them positive effects on water and soil conservation.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the decomposition of three exogenous organic amendments (buffalo manure, its compost and vermicompost), mixed with biochar or not, under tropical climate conditions. Litterbags containing pure substrates or mixtures were exposed to soil under natural rainfall conditions during one year. Most of C and N of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) and biochar were removed rapidly in the first 16 weeks of incubation. After one year, in case of applying alone, only around 30% of C of EOMs and 40% of C of biochar remained. Our data highlighted that in mixture, the presence of biochar led to about 40% higher amounts of C remaining, most probably related to aggregate formation preventing physical disintegration and/or leaching losses. Consequently, this study demonstrated the interest of mixing organic substrates with biochar for preventing C removal from soil immediately after field exposure. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Earthworms and termites, as soil engineers, play a major role in the regulation of biogeochemical processes and the provision of ecosystem services. They create biogenic aggregates on the soil surface, e.g., earthworm casts and termite sheetings, which can influence soil erosion and the downward transfer of fertility. We assessed the effect of the micro-relief generated by earthworms and termites on soil hydrodynamic properties, and soil and nutrient losses. Eighteen 1 m × 1 m plots were established for rainfall simulation experiments (2 runs of 40 min rain, intensity 90 mm h −1 ) in a steep slope fallow in Northern Vietnam. The soil surface of the micro-plots differed in the proportions of earthworm casts and termite sheetings. The results confirmed the importance of soil biostructures in the regulation of pedohydrological properties of soils. Although globular water-stable earthworm casts promote water infiltration in soil and decrease soil and nutrient losses, the unstable termite sheetings break-down rapidly and generate structural crusts which foster water runoff and soil detachment. No relation was observed between the abundance or biomass of earthworms or termites and the pedohydrological properties measured during the rainfall simulations. This therefore suggests that soil engineers can have greater impact on ecosystem functioning through their biogenic structures rather than as a result of their own abundance or biomass.

Abstract

International audience; The impact of organic matter inputs from agricultural, forest and domestic sources on aquatic processes has been considerably less studied in tropical reservoirs relative to temperate systems despite the high number of these small aquatic systems in the tropics. Here we present the results of an in situ mesocosm study that examined the impact of allochthonous organic matter on a headwater reservoir in Northern Vietnam. We examined the impact of wastewater and soils from floodplain paddies, Acacia mangium plantations and from upland slopes on the metabolic status of the reservoir. The addition of floodplain paddy soils to the reservoir water led to a rapid switch in metabolic status from net autotrophic to net heterotrophic. In contrast, the addition of wastewater in low concentrations had less impact on the metabolic status of the reservoir, reflecting the low population density in the area. The addition of floodplain paddy soils also increased phytoplankton diversity and evenness relative to the control. In summary, soils from floodplain paddies and from A. mangium plantations had the highest impact on the reservoir, with upland soils and wastewater having less of an impact. We also found that primary production in this reservoir was nitrogen limited. In order to avoid accelerating the impact of runoff on the reservoir, future management options should perhaps focus on minimizing water and sediment runoff from upstream paddy fields and from A. mangium plantations. These results also underline the importance of studying these upland tropical water bodies that can contribute an important but, on the whole, ignored part of the global carbon balance.

Abstract

Compost, vermicompost and biochar amendments are thought to improve soil quality and plant yield. However, little is known about their long-term impact on crop yield and the environment in tropical agro-ecosystems. In this study we investigated the effect of organic amendments (buffalo manure, compost and verrnicompost) and biochar (applied alone or with vermicompost) on plant yield, soil fertility, soil erosion and water dynamics in a degraded Acrisol in Vietnam. Maize growth and yield, as well as weed growth, were examined for three years in terrestrial mesocosms under natural rainfall. Maize yield and growth showed high inter-annual variability depending on the organic amendment. Vermicompost improved maize growth and yield but its effect was rather small and was only significant when water availability was limited (year 2). This suggests that vermicompost could be a promising substrate for improving the resistance of agrosystems to water stress. When the vermicompost biochar mixture was applied, further growth and yield improvements were recorded in some cases. When applied alone, biochar had a positive influence on maize yield and growth, thus confirming its interest for improving long-term soil productivity. All organic amendments reduced water runoff, soil detachment and NH4+ and NO3- transfer to water. These effects were more significant with vermicompost than with buffalo manure and compost, highlighting that the beneficial influence of vermicompost is not limited to its influence on plant yield. In addition, this study showed for the first time that the combination of vermicompost and biochar may not only improve plant productivity but also reduce the negative impact of agriculture on water quality. Abstract

One critical concern for Thailand reservoirs which are used for irrigated agriculture (mainly paddy rice) and aquaculture is the lack of information on contamination from trace metal element (TME) in waters and biological compartments of the reservoirs. TME are both from natural and anthropogenic origins and may affect the quality of lake waters and food chain. The goal of this study was to evaluate the contamination in TME and study their transfer between the different compartments in and downstream of the reservoir. Fourteen TME have been measured in water column (dissolved phase), fishes, and sediments of the Mae Thang Reservoir (northern Thailand) as well as soil and rice grains of irrigated area. Analyses were performed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). This 2-year study showed that TME concentrations in water were lower than standards for irrigation and aquatic life. However, localized values of Fe and Mn were higher than the standard in the bottom of the reservoir in dry season. TME in sediments were relatively high compared to pristine lakes. Two species of fish were contaminated in As and Ni. Soils exceeded standard values for Cr, Ni, and Cu, while rice grains showed contamination in Ni that indicated a transfer between soil and rice grain. The accumulation of TME in sediments showed that upstream cultivated areas may have contributed to bring TME in the reservoir. TME concentrations in fishes were thus affected and should be controlled. Accumulation of TME in soils of paddy field due to the use of pesticides and fertilizer may increase contamination of rice in the long term.

Abstract

International audience; Understanding and measuring the consequences of environmental pollution on human health remains a challenge. Several barriers arise, with the difficulty in identifying uncommon pathologies but also with the limited knowledge of the real health status of populations that depends on the supply and use of care. In an effort to assess these barriers, we chose a study area severely affected by agricultural intensification to investigate the potential and visible impact of water pollution on human health. Located in northern Thailand, the study area includes a watershed, its reservoir and the irrigated area downstream. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to assess the exposure of 297 households to potential water pollutions and understand their behaviour regarding the use of water and recourse to health services. The observations are discussed in the light of the epidemiological records provided by the Ministry of Public Health for the same area. The study shows the heterogeneity of the epidemiological data and the difficulty to assess the sanitary risk. Despite the small size of the study area, inequalities are observed, with remote populations having a poorer access to water with occasional shortage and a limited use of health services. In this context, the intensification of agriculture and the massive use of pesticides and fertilizers are likely to have serious consequences on human health. However, the impact of potential environmental pollution is not visible from the epidemiological records, because of a difficult diagnosis, a lack of consultation when symptoms are reversible and the long latency before clinical symptoms are apparent (example of cancers). Prevention and incentive from health authorities should help in reducing this risk.

Abstract

International audience; While considered as sustainable and low-cost agricultural amendments, the impacts of organic fertilizers on downstream aquatic microbial communities remain poorly documented. We investigated the quantity and quality of the dissolved organic matter leaching from agricultural soil amended with compost, vermicompost or biochar and assessed their effects on lake microbial communities, in terms of viral and bacterial abundances, community structure and metabolic potential. The addition of compost and vermicompost significantly increased the amount of dissolved organic carbon in the leachate compared to soil alone. Leachates from these additions, either with or without biochar were highly bioavailable to aquatic microbial communities, though reducing the metabolic potential of the community and harboring more specific communities. Although not affecting bacterial richness or taxonomic distributions, the specific addition of biochar affected the original lake bacterial communities resulting in a strongly different community. This could be partly explained by viral burst and converging bacterial abundances throughout the samples. These results underline the necessity to include off-site impacts of agricultural amendments when considering their cascading effect on downstream aquatic ecosystems. However, the robustness of this method across a wide range of systems remains to be shown. We measured CDOM fluorescence and DOC concentration in four tropical freshwater and coastal environments (estuary and coastal, tropical shallow lakes, water from the freshwater lens of two small islands, and soil leachates). We found that although this method can provide an estimation of DOC concentration in sites with low variability in DOC and CDOM sources in systems where the variability of DOC and CDOM sources are high, this method should not be used as it will lead to errors in the estimation of the bulk DOC concentration.

Abstract

Vermicompost and biochar amendments are management practices which may contribute to sustainable agroecosystems by reducing dependence on inorganic fertilizers. However, little is known about their impacts on soil microorganisms and their transfer and evolution in connected aquatic systems. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of organic manure (buffalo manure, compost or vermicompost) and biochar amendments on bacterial and viral properties in soil and water. A three year experiment was carried out with terrestrial mesocosms which were used to test the effect of organic matter amendment on maize growth. In the last year of the experiment, runoff and infiltration waters from the terrestrial mesocosms were transferred to aquatic mesocosms. Organic fertilization improved soil properties (higher C, N content and pH H 2 O ) and as a consequence increased soil bacterial and viral abundance. Bacterial diversity (Shannon ‘H’ and richness ‘S’ indices calculated from DGGE fingerprint) was also enhanced after the continuous application of organic amendments. Compared with compost, vermicompost reduced viral abundance and S but similar H and bacterial abundance were observed. The pH H 2 O , C content and bacterial and viral abundance increased in the aquatic mesocosms following organic fertilization. As a consequence, bacterial and viral diversity also increased in the water, although no differences were found between compost and vermicompost. Biochar increased soil bacterial abundance for the mineral fertilizer treatment but did not influence bacterial and viral abundance in water. However, the combination of biochar and vermicompost led to an increase of viruses in soil and a reduction of bacteria in water. Similarity dendrograms from the DGGE banding patterns showed that the structure of bacterial communities was mainly influenced by the fertilizer treatments in soil but by the presence of biochar in water. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the nature of the organic amendment has important consequences on both soil and water microbial abundance and diversity.

Abstract

International audience; The export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from agricultural soils can represent an important pathway of soil organic carbon loss. However, despite its importance in terrestrial and downstream aquatic ecosystems, most work has focused on temperate agrosystems with tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems being ignored. Here we present the results of a series of rain simulation experiments aimed at examining DOC export from sloping lands in North Vietnam. Three regularly used agricultural practices were tested and compared with Bare soils. We also compared the impact of leaf litter in two planted forest sites. We found high rates of DOC export (0.03-0.25 g C m(-2)) during a 40 min rain episode with the lowest rates observed in the Bare soils and the highest in the planted Forest without leaf litter. This is equivalent to a loss of between 0.001 and 0.008% of the total soil organic carbon in the upper 10 cm during a single, intense rain event. This work highlights the impact of different agricultural practices (Bare soil, hoeing, mulching and fallow) and land use (planted Forest with or without leaf litter) on the export of DOC from upland, tropical soils and further underlines the importance of studying DOC fluxes from agricultural land as it represents an important and highly mobile component of ecosystem carbon fluxes.

Abstract

Situated at the foot of the Pichincha volcano, the city of Quito is frequently subjected to hydroclimatic hazards. In 1995 an 11·2 km2 watershed, located in the vicinity of the city, was equipped with eight rain gauges and two flow gauges to better understand the local rainfall/runoff transformation processes. Rainfall simulation experiments were carried out on more than 40 one-square-metre plots to measure infiltration point-processes. The high density of measurement devices allowed us to identify the origin and nature of the various contributions to runoff for the different physiographic units of the watershed: urban area from an altitude of 2800 to 3200 m; farmland, pasture and forested land, and finally paramo above 3900 m. Runoff occurs mainly in the lower part of the basin and is caused by urbanization; however, the natural soils of this area can also produce Hortonian runoff, which is predominant in a few events. This contribution can be studied through rainfall simulation experiments. In the upper natural zone, the younger and more permeable soils generate less runoff on the slopes. However, almost permanently saturated contributing areas, which are located in the bottom of the quebradas, may generate flood events, the size of which depends on the extent of the area concerned. Variations in the runoff coefficients are related first to the baseflow and second to the amount of rainfall in the previous 24 h. This analysis, which underlines the complexity of a small, peri-urban, volcanic catchment, is a necessary preliminary to runoff modelling in an area where very few experiments have been carried out on small catchments. Abstract

Vegetation stripes were described in arid areas of Africa, Australia and Mexico. They depend on the local concentration of rain water after runoff. In Mexico, we described the soil surface characteristics of vegetation stripes and performed rainfall simulations to analyze its hydrodynamic behaviour. Simulations were performed on plots characterized by the four soil surface features represented in the stripes. Four types of surface crusts were found in the stripes, erosion, sedimentation, and two types of structural crusts. The less vegetated plots had relatively impervious crusts with low preponding rains and high constant runoff rates. On the contrary, the highly vegetated plot had a thin crust and abundant litter which allowed a high infiltration rate. Runoff rates were positively related to rainfall intensity. Those relationships between surface characteristics and runoff determine the fate of rain water and may allow the prediction of the amount of runoff for a specific rain on a given plot.

Abstract

International audience; Woody plant encroachment in grasslands is a worldwide phenomenon. Despite many studies, the consequences of woody plant encroachment on sub-canopy vegetation and soil properties are still unclear. To better understand the impacts of trees on grassland properties we examined the following questions using a mountainous sub-tropical grassland of South Africa encroached by an indigenous tree, Acacia sieberiana as a case study: (1) Do trees increase sub-canopy herbaceous diversity, quality and biomass and soil nitrogen content? (2) Do large trees have a stronger effect than medium-sized trees on grass and soil properties? (3) Does the impact of trees change with the presence of livestock and position of trees in a catena? We studied grass and non-graminoid species diversity and biomass, grass quality and soil properties during the wet season of 2009. Nitrogen in grass leaves, soil cation exchange capacity and calcium and magnesium ion concentrations in the soil increased under tall Acacia versus open areas. Medium-sized Acacia decreased the gross energy content, digestibility and neutral detergent fibre of grasses but increased the species richness of non-graminoids. Tall and medium Acacia trees were associated with the presence of Senecio inaequidens, an indigenous species that is toxic to horses and cattle. The presence of livestock resulted in a decrease in herbaceous root biomass and an increase in soil carbon and leaf biomass of grass under Acacia. Tree position in the catena did not modify the impact of trees on the herbaceous layer and soil properties. For management of livestock we recommend retaining tall Acacia trees and partially removing medium-sized Acacia trees because the latter had negative effects on grass quality.

Abstract

International audience; We use the Bayesian method to invert a simple two-layer pedological horizon (1-D with a topsoil and a subsoil) of a surveyed site to be assessed. We show how the Bayesian method is well suited to the determination of topsoil/subsoil features, and can be used in particular as a tool for the analysis of parameters to be retrieved in terms of information content. Our approach is devoted mainly to the assessment of topsoil thickness, and of topsoil and subsoil conductivities, which are provided in terms of probability density functions. We first summarize the methodology implemented with the Geonics EM38-MK2 conductivity meter, and discuss the adaptation of field procedures and post-processing methods to mitigate the effects of drift and bias. We briefly review some non-Bayesian approaches, and then develop the Bayesian approach for the context of our geophysical survey, highlighting its merits. Positivity constraints (on thickness and conductivity) are included in the form of log parameters. A priori knowledge, based on an objective choice made by the geophysicist, is naturally included in the Bayesian scheme. We discuss the equivalence problem associated with the application of the Slingram method to soil structure analysis. The survey of a luvisol at the Kwazulu-Natal (South Africa) site of Potshini is used to illustrate an ecological application of the Slingram and Bayesian methods, used to define the geo-electrical structure of the near-surface soil. Abstract

Although grazing livestock may have direct negative effects on woody species through herbivory and trampling, (heavy-)grazing is often associated with woody plant encroachment. Two main mechanisms can explain the positive effects of grazers on woody cover: (1) Grazers reduce the interspecific competition with trees and may reduce fuel load, and (2) gut passage through livestock increases seedling establishment by scarification (increased germination) and fertilization by dung (higher survival and growth of seedlings). We tested the effects of fire, grass, cattle ingestion (transit) and dung on germination, seedling height and survival as well as on recruitment of Acacia sieberiana in a sub-humid grassland of South Africa. About 8,000 seeds were planted in the field in a randomized block design. The removal of grass by grazing and/or fire had the most important effect on Acacia recruitment in savanna. Our findings highlight the hierarchy of the main factors affecting Acacia recruitment, which provides new insights to the understanding of woody plant encroachment.

Abstract

Gully erosion and woody plant encroachment are frequently observed in grasslands worldwide. Gully erosion driven by water processes is usually affected by topography, land-use change and vegetation cover. We hypothesised that trees, through their potential link with overland and subsurface flow, may have an impact on gully extension. However, very few studies have simultaneously considered tree encroachment and gullies. We used aerial photographs to study Acacia sieberiana encroachment and gully erosion in a South African grassland (KwaZulu-Natal Province) for a period lasting 64 years. At the catchment scale, results showed that acacias started invading after 1976 and transformed the grassland into a savanna with 9.45% of tree cover in 2009. Gully area increased by 3.9% in the last 64 years and represented 12.76% of catchment area in 2009. Mean estimated sediment loss was 200 Mg ha− 1 of gully y− 1, indicating a high erosion rate mainly due to the collapse of gully banks after swelling and shrinking. Volumetric retreat rate (V) of 15 gully heads was correlated with drainage area (Drain.A) by a power function explaining 64% of the variance: V = 0.02*Drain.A0.83. A positive correlation between gully retreat rate and Acacia canopy area was measured between 2001 and 2009 when established tree encroachment was observed. These results, associated with the susceptibility of this soil to subsurface flow and the observation of pipe erosion systems in the field, showed that both surface and subsurface processes occur in this sub-humid grassland and that trees can be indirectly associated with increased gully erosion.

Abstract

The lifespan of many tropical water reservoirs is limited by siltation due to soil erosion in the watershed. The objectives of this study were to determine, the amount of catchment-derived organic carbon accumulated in sediments of a reservoir of North Thailand and to relate it with the history of cultivation and rainfall regime in the watershed. Over a twelve-years period (1995-2006) since impoundment sediment delivery was high (ca. 19.6 Mg ha(-1) yr(-1)). The yearly supply of catchment-derived material was composed of coarse sediment deposits near the main inlets and of fine laminated sediment accumulations in deep-water environments. Their stable carbon isotope composition indicated that soil organic matter was the main source of organic carbon preserved in sediments (ca. 83 wt.%). Fine sediments derived from suspended loads exported from the watershed by runoff and stream waters were related to erosive rainfall, to the extent of area under annual cropping and to crop change with a marked increase after the replacement of beans by maize. However, sediment accumulation did not respond linearly to extreme rainfall events, as shown by the supply of nearly 48% of the total amount of sediments by a single exceptional flood. Total organic carbon storage in sediments reached ca. 23.8 MgC ha(-1) yr(-1) in 2006, twelve years after impoundment, falling in the upper range of small to medium size reservoirs with agricultural catchments.

Abstract

International audience; Gully erosion is one of the main causes of soil loss in drylands. Understanding the dominant mechanisms of erosion is important to achieve effective erosion control, thus in this study our main objective was to quantify the mechanisms involved in gully bank retreat as a result of three processes, falling of entire soil aggregates, transport of soil material by splash and by water running along gully banks (runoff). during rainfall events. The study was conducted in the sloping lands of the KwaZulu-Natal province, a region that is highly affected by gully erosion. Artificial rain was applied at 60 mm h(-1) for 45 min at the vertical wall of a gully bank typical to the area. The splash material was collected by using a network of 0.045 m(2) buckets. The sediments in the running water were assessed by sampling the runoff collected from a microplot inserted within the base of the bank, and collecting the fallen aggregates after the rainfall simulation was complete. Results indicated that the overall erosion for the simulation was 721 g m(-2) h(-1). Runoff erosion proved to be the dominant mechanism and amounted to 450g m(-2) h(-1), followed by splash and fall down of aggregates (about 170 g m(-2) h(-1)). Gully bank retreat occurred at a rate of 0.55 mm h(-1) and assuming that the soil bulk density is 1.3 g cm(-3), this corresponds to a retreat of 8.8 mm y(-1). Extrapolations to the watershed level, where about 500 m(2) of gully bank are observed per hectare, would lead to an erosion rate of 4.8 t ha(-1) y(-1). These limited results based on a simulated storm show that the three main mechanisms (runoff, splash and fall down of aggregates) are responsible for the retreat of gully banks and that to mitigate gully erosion, appropriate measures are required to control all three mechanisms. Further research studies are needed to confirm and to scale up, both in time and space, as these data are obtained at one location and from a single artificial storm. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

In arid climates, plant growth and survival depend primarily upon the amount of soil water available at the roots. Variation in soil water content at the individual plant level must then be taken into account to analyse the production and dynamics of vegetation cover. The plant itself modifies local water availability through rainfall interception and stemflow. Rainfall interception and stemflow was studied for a shrub, Flourensia cernua, a dominant species of vegetation stripes in the Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico, in order to determine to what extent it could influence soil water recharge. Simulated rainfalls were applied at two intensifies on six 1 m2 plots centered around each shrub. Shrub cover was determined from vertical photographs. Experimental clipping from three shrubs allowed observations on the decrease in stemflow according to cover and measurement of the dry biomass of leaves and twigs. An experimental design enabled measurements to be made on throughfall, runoff from the base of the shrub, and to deduce stemflow and infiltration. Stemflow accounted for 4-45 per cent of the rainfall in our study plots and was significantly correlated with shrub cover. It was higher for the lower rainfall intensity. Stemflow, together with a high soil permeability, resulted in a greater soil water recharge under the shrub.

In most regions of the world overgrazing plays a major role in land degradation and thus creates a major threat to natural ecosystems. Several feedbacks exist between overgrazing, vegetation, soil infiltration by water and soil erosion that need to be better understood. In this study of a sub-humid overgrazed rangeland in South Africa, the main objective was to evaluate the impact of grass cover on soil infiltration by water and soil detachment. Artificial rains of 30 and 60 mm h−1 were applied for 30 min on 1 m2 micro-plots showing similar sandy-loam Acrisols with different proportions of soil surface coverage by grass (Class A: 75–100%; B: 75–50%; C: 50–25%; D: 25–5%; E: 5–0% with an outcropping A horizon; F: 0% with an outcropping B horizon) to evaluate pre-runoff rainfall (Pr), steady state water infiltration (I), sediment concentration (SC) and soil losses (SL). Abstract

Although dung beetles are known to perform a multitude of ecosystem services, their effects on water infiltration, runoff, porosity, moisture and erosion of soil have never been thoroughly researched. Maintenance of these hydrological properties is important in agro-ecosystem functioning where overgrazing results in negative impacts on the soil. The study site was located in the Potshini catchment in Kwazulu-Natal (South Africa), an area heavily grazed by livestock. We conducted two rainfall simulations on three 1 m(-2) control (no dung) and six dung-treated plots in December 2008, and repeated the study in June 2009 on the same plots. Natural populations of dung beetles were allowed to colonise the dung. Simulations were conducted for 30 min at an intensity of 30 mm h(-1). Key variables calculated were pre-runoff amounts (Pi), infiltration ratios (Ki), and soil losses. Samples were collected for bulk density determination during the same time periods in order to measure differences in porosity and moisture in control and dung-treated plots at different depths. Using multivariate statistics we found significant differences between dung-treated and control plots in three of four simulations. After 48 h of beetle activity, Pi and Ki values were significantly increased and remained at elevated levels six months later. Soil losses were initially higher in dung-treated plots than controls, but had declined to less than control values after six months. Bulk density in the A-horizon (0-10 cm) was significantly reduced after 48 h of beetle activity and remained so for six months. No difference in bulk density was observed at greater depths. Soil moisture initially increased significantly in the A-horizon, as well as at 20 and 30 cm depths after six months of activity. We conclude that dung beetles positively influence hydrological properties of the soil by increasing water infiltration and soil porosity, and reducing surface water runoff. Contrasting effects on soil losses are problematic to reconcile from this study. High losses initially observed may be offset in the long-term by reductions associated with the increased infiltration ratios, though this remains to be confirmed.

Abstract

Rapid changes in upland farming systems in Southeast Asia generated predominantly by increased population pressure and 'market forces' have resulted in widespread land degradation that has been well documented at the plot scale. Yet, the links between agricultural activities in the uplands and downstream off-site effects remain largely unknown because of the difficulties in transferring results from plots to a larger scale. Many authors have thus pointed out the need for long-term catchment studies. The objective of this paper is to summarize the results obtained by the Management of Soil Erosion Consortium (MSEC) over the last 5 years from 27 catchments in five countries (Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam). The purpose of the study was to assess the impacts of cultivation practices on annual runoff and erosion rates. Initial surveys in each catchment included topography, soils and land use. Monitoring included climatic, hydrologic and erosion (total sediment yield including bed load and suspended sediment load) data, land use and crop yields, and farmers' income. In addition, new land management options were introduced through consultations with farmers and evaluated in terms of runoff and erosion. These included tree plantations, fruit trees, improved fallow with legumes, maize intercropped with legumes, planted fodder, native grass strips and agro-ecological practices (direct sowing and mulch-based conservation agriculture). Regressions analyses showed that runoff during the rainy season, and normalized runoff flow coefficient based on erosive rainfall during the rainy season (rainfall with intensity exceeding 25 mm h(-1)) increase with the percentage of the catchment covered by maize. Both variables decrease with increasing soil depth, standard deviation of catchment slope (that reflects terrain roughness), and the percentages of the catchment covered by fallow (regular and improved), tree plantations and planted fodder. The best predictors of sediment yield were the surface percentages of maize, Job's tears, cassava and footpaths. The main conclusions generated from this study were: (i) soil erosion is predominantly influenced by land use rather than environmental characteristics not only at the plot scale but also at the catchment scale; (ii) slash-and-burn shifting cultivation with sufficiently long rotations (I year of cultivation, 8 years of fallow) is too often unjustly blamed for degradation; (iii) in its place, continuous cropping of maize and cassava promotes high rates of soil erosion at the catchment scale; (iv) conservation technologies are efficient in reducing runoff and total sediment yield at the catchment scale; (v) the adoption of improved soil management technologies by upland farmers is not a function of the degree of intensification of their farming system and/or of their incomes. The results suggest that if expansion of maize and cassava into already degraded upland systems were to occur due to increased demand for biofuels, there is a risk of higher runoff and sediment generation. A failure to adopt appropriate land use management strategies will result in further rapid resource degradation with negative impacts to downstream communities.

Abstract

The rehabilitation of indurate pyroclastic formations of the Ecuadorian Sierra (cangahua) paves the way for the development of new agricultural areas. The material derived from the fragmentation of the hardened volcanic ashes is strongly prone to pluvial erosion, essentially because it has a fine silty-sandy texture, and because contains no organic matter and no clay minerals. Rainfall simulation was implemented before and after three cycles of cultivation to asses the evolution of soil structure and its susceptibility to erosion. The cultivated plots were < 1% slope and the rainfall simulation tests were conducted after the harvest on bare surfaces. Two soil preparations, (coarse and fine) and four different agricultural practices, (organic matter, green manure, mineral fertilization, and zero fertilization) were evaluated; as well reference/control plots (uncultivated bare plots). Surface soil crusting occurred rapidly within the cultivated plots when compared to the recent tilled cangahua. Runoff and soil loss were generally higher on plots with lower structural stability and generally exhibited higher clay content. In agreement with the structural stability measured in a laboratory, organic matter inputs increase the soil porosity. This condition had no effect on the structural stability of the soil, resistance to crusting, and therefore little impact on surface runoff and erosion. The preferred option for land with these soils would be no tillage and a permanent soil cover (pasture) if they were to be utilised for agriculture.

Abstract

Two consecutive years of investigation on soil surface features, surface runoff and soil detachment within 1-m(2) microplots on 40% slope highlighted the effects of land-use change, vegetation cover and biological activity on the water pathways in Northern Vietnam. Three replicate plots were setup on each of five land-uses: cassava (CAS), grass fodder of Bracharia ruziziensis (BRA), a 3-year old fallow (FAL), tree stands of Acacia mangium and Venicia montana (FOR), and a fallow with regrowth of Eucalyptus regularly cut (EUC). The second year, two of the microplots under FAL and EUC were treated with herbicide (FALh, EUCh), one of them was burnt (FALh+b, EUCh+b). The highest yearly surface runoff coefficient of 16%, and soil detachment rate of 700 g m(-2) yr(-1) in average with a maximum of 1305 g m(-2) yr(-1) have been recorded under CAS. On FALh and FALh+b, runoff ratios were 8.7 and 13.5%, respectively and detachment rates were 86 and 389 g m(-2). Abstract

International audience; Drastic environmental changes have occurred in Thailand during the twentieth century, along with the population growth and consecutive agricultural development consequently threatening the ecosystems. Infrastructures, and especially water reservoirs, were built to increase and improve the agricultural production. These changes have modified irreversibly the biotopes and, above all, the hydrographical network and water quality. In an effort to assess and monitor their consequences on human health, a health Geographic Information System was developed in Phrae province, North Thailand, focusing on the Mae Thang watershed, its reservoir and irrigated area downstream. In partnership with Phrae provincial Public Health Office, all patients' cases from 78 different pathologies, reported in Phrae rural areas from 1997 to 2004, were integrated and incidences were calculated among all the 693 villages, where patients and families live. Health infrastructures were also localized to assess the health offer, access, and recourse. Overall higher prevalence was recorded in Mae Thang study area as compared to the whole province, especially for infectious diseases that could be linked to water quality, as well as for upstream villages compared to those downstream. Marked geographical heterogeneity in disease prevalence between villages showed the importance of the choice of the study scale and the need for a public health survey at the village level to answer the hypotheses raised by the present observations.

Abstract

Surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS) is a proteomic technique that enables the profiling of proteins present in any biological material studied. We used this approach to identify new biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the sera of patients with cirrhosis. Sera from 82 patients with cirrhosis, either without (n = 38) or with (n = 44) HCC, were analyzed by SELDI-TOF MS, and the results of the two groups were compared. The most efficient protein peaks leading to discrimination of patients with HCC were selected (receiver operative characteristic curves). The highest-scoring peak combination was established in a first group of serum samples (multinomial regression) and was tested in an independent group. The protein corresponding to the highest discrimination was purified and characterized further. The intensity of 30 protein peaks significantly differed between cirrhotic patients with and without HCC. An algorithm including the six highest-scoring peaks allowed correct classification (presence or absence of HCC) of 92.5% of patients in the test sample set and 90% in the validation sample set. The highest discriminating peak (8,900 Da) was purified further and was characterized as the C-terminal part of the V10 fragment of vitronectin. An in vitro study suggested that the increase of the 8,900-Da fragment in the serum of patients with HCC may proceed from the cleavage of native vitronectin with metalloproteases, a family of enzymes whose activity is enhanced in HCC. In conclusion, global protein profiling is an efficient approach that enabled us to identify a catalytic fragment of vitronectin as a new serum marker of HCC in patients with chronic liver diseases. Abstract

In northern Ecuador, soils of high altitude grasslands (paramos) are mainly non-allophanic Andisols developed on Holocenic volcanic ash. These soils have a high water retention capacity and are the “water tank” of central Ecuador. To assess the effect of land use (burning and tillage) on soil hydrodynamic properties, rainfall simulation was conducted at two different sites. At Pichincha near Quito, the simulation was conducted on a recent volcanic ash soil comparing natural, tilled and burned plots. At El Angel, the simulation was conducted on a mature non-allophanic Andisol comparing natural, recently tilled and formerly cultivated plots. On natural plots, the infiltration rate was very high and sediment loss very low. Results for infiltration rate and runoff indicated that land use change on paramos increased runoff flow and reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity. Superficial reorganisation of the soil surfaces occurred on tilled plots at both sites. This crusting process was fast and resulted in surfaces with very low conductivity at Pichincha. The same processes seemed to be slower at El Angel. The soil surface of recent Andisols at Pichincha was prone to crusting whereas the mature Andisol, at El Angel, with a lower bulk density, was compacted when the kinetic energy of raindrops was high. Water repellency occurred after burning at Pichincha and following long natural air drying after tillage in the non-allophanic A horizon at El Angel. Water repellency combined with the low bulk density of soil aggregates explain the intensity of sediment losses in the abandoned soils after cultivation (Bare fallow plots). Erosion occurred in these areas through floating hydrophobic and stable aggregates.

Abstract

A rainfall simulator was used on groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) plots artificially infected withPuccinia arachidis in order to study urediniospore dispersal caused by various amounts of rainfall. Several trapping method were used to compare dry, splash and drip dispersal caused by rain. The spore liberation mechanisms activated by rain and the flows of spores which they generate can be studied at the infected canopy or at the sporulating lesion scales. Two systems referring to these scales were considered to discuss the results. Dry dispersal seemed preponderant. The spore content of the lesions in the canopy was strongly reduced by rain. The results indicated that light rain showers may promote disease dispersal, whereas it may be hampered by heavy showers. Een regensimulator, een krachtig beregeningsapparaat, werd ingezet boven een aantal aardnoot-(Arachis hypogaea) veldjes geinoculeerd met de aardnootroest (Puccinia arachidis) om de uredosporenverspreiding te bestuderen bij verschillende hoeveelheden regenval. Diverse vangtechnieken werden toegepast om droge verspreiding, spatverspreiding en druipverspreiding ten gevolge van regen te vergelijken. De sporeninhoud van de sporenhoopjes op het gewas werd door regen sterk verminderd. De resultaten, verkregen in twee verschillende, maar elkaar aanvullende analyses, geven aan dat lichte regenbuien de ziekteverspreiding bevorderen, terwijl zware buien deze zouden afremmen.
