Aim: The Belgium’s strategy against COVID-19 was partly based on mass screening. Here, we reported the results observed in a Belgian mass screening center. Materials & methods: Between October 2020 and February 2021, 32,089 samples were collected analyzed with reverse-transcription PCR (Thermo Fisher Scientific kits and apparatus). Patients were categorized according to their contagiousness (extrapolated from the cycle threshold [Ct] values and the recommendation of Sciensano). Results: We observed association between Ct values and age, with higher Ct observed in extreme age groups (75 years). Conclusion: The analysis of the evolution of the contagiousness of these patients tested twice within a 7-day period showed the relevancy of the recommendation edited by Sciensano.

The aim of this study was to identify early clinical and laboratory predictive factors of a severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).A retrospective study was conducted on adult patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in our hospital. Diagnosis was based on a positive real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on nasopharyngeal samples. The cohort was divided into two groups, i.e. a favorable evolution (FE) group and an unfavorable evolution (UFE) group, including intensive care unit (ICU) and deceased patients.Results: A total of 198 patients were enrolled in the study, with 138 FE (70%) and 60 UFE (30%). Older age, male gender, comorbidities and dyspnea at admission constituted significantly worse prognosis factors. Among laboratory features, lymphocyte and platelet counts as well as corrected glomerular filtration rate were significantly lower in UFE patients, while neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, inflammation biomarkers, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glycemia and D-dimer were significantly higher. Procalcitonin and LDH appeared as the most accurate variables according to receiver operating characteristic curves.This Belgian study revealed clinical and laboratory features able to predict high risk of ICU requirement, or even death, at admission time. These results provide a potential tool for patient's triage in a context of pandemic.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) has been demonstrated to be a neurotropic virus and has been linked to several neurological complications associated with a wide range of clinical outcomes. Here, we present data from immunocompetent children with a central neurological condition and intrathecal DNA detection of HHV-6 virus. Through these cases, physiopathology, investigations, and outcome of the disease will be described. Finally, specific treatment will be discussed.

Background The knowledge of circulating HCV genotypes and subtypes in a country is crucial to guide antiviral therapy and to understand local epidemiology. Studies investigating circulating HCV genotypes and their trends have been conducted in Belgium. However they are outdated, lack nationwide representativeness or were not conducted in the general population. Methods In order to determine the distribution of different circulating HCV genotypes in Belgium, we conducted a multicentre study with all the 19 Belgian laboratories performing reimbursed HCV genotyping assays. Available genotype and subtype data were collected for the period from 2008 till 2015. Furthermore, a limited number of other variables were collected: some demographic characteristics from the patients and the laboratory technique used for the determination of the HCV genotype. Results For the study period, 11,033 unique records collected by the participating laboratories were used for further investigation. HCV genotype 1 was the most prevalent (53.6%) genotype in Belgium, with G1a and G1b representing 19.7% and 31.6%, respectively. Genotype 3 was the next most prevalent (22.0%). Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate in a multicentre survey the analytical performance of the Check-Direct CPE® assay (CDCPE), a multiplex PCR assay for the detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), directly from rectal swabs. Methods Adult patients admitted to a high-risk unit in four participating centres were prospectively screened for CPE carriage by rectal swabbing. Samples were cultured on chromogenic CPE-selective media in the local laboratories. All growing Enterobacteriaceae strains were transferred for confirmation of carbapenemase production by multiplex PCR, together with the faecal swabs for CDCPE, to the coordinating laboratory. Results Overall, 38 of the 394 samples analysed (9.6%; range 3%–20% per centre) yielded a positive signal for a carbapenemase gene with CDCPE, including 17 samples (4.3%; range 0%–15% per centre) that grew a total of 25 CPE-confirmed isolates (all OXA-48-like producers, including one isolate that simultaneously harboured a VIM-type carbapenemase). No CPE culture-positive samples were missed by CDCPE. Among the 21 samples that were CPE-positive with CDCPE but negative on culture, five were collected from previously known CPE carriers and 6/9 OXA-48-positive signals were detected at one participating centre that was undergoing a hospital-wide outbreak of OXA-48 CPE. When compared with the selective culture, the sensitivity and specificity of CDCPE were 100% and 94%, respectively. Conclusions This study showed the value of CDCPE as a tool for screening CPE carriage in an epidemiological setting with a high prevalence of OXA-48 CPE. However, the potential added value for infection control management remains to be demonstrated.
