Abstract

The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

A new type of tracking device using large area nuclear emulsion sheets was developed for the short baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, CERN-WA95/CHORUS. The emulsion tracker is made of three layers, each 25 mm thick including support, and covering an area of about 5 m 2 . Two layers were installed upstream and one downstream of the hexagonal magnet of the CHORUS hadron spectrometer. The achieved position resolution over the whole area is 25 μm, which keeps the momentum resolution of the spectrometer below 30% up to momenta of about 15 GeV/ c .

Abstract

A pion production source using a thin target and a recirculating storage ring is considered. The potential advantages of the scheme are: i) the thin target could allow a better collection eciency; ii) the proton beam dump is avoided; iii) light targets could be used. The disadvantages are: i) the high beam current stored in the recirculator, ii) constraints on timing. This scheme could be used for the Neutrino Factory but not for Muon Colliders.

Abstract

A hybrid image-intensifier tube, suitable for extremely low-light imaging, has been tested. This device is based on an Electron-Bombarded CCD chip (EBCCD) with 1024]1024 sensitive pixels. The tube, which has a photocathode diameter of 40 mm, is gateable and zoomable, with an image magnification varying from 0.62 to 1.3. The high gain (about 4000 collected electrons per photoelectron at the operational voltage of 15 kV) and the relatively low noise (180 electrons per pixel at 10 MHz pixel-readout frequency), allows single-photoelectron signals to be separated from noise with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 10. By applying an appropriate threshold on the signal amplitude, the background can almost be eliminated, with a loss of few percent in single-photoelectron counting. High inner gain, low-noise, single-photoelectron sensitivity, and high spatial resolution make the EBCCD imaging tube a unique device, attractive for many applications in high-energy physics, astrophysics and biomedical diagnostics. Abstract

We present a new tracking device based on glass capillary bundles or layers filled with highly purified liquid scintillator and read out at one end by means of image intensifiers and CCD devices. A large-volume prototype consisting of 5 x 10(5) capillaries with a diameter of 20 mu m and a length of 180 cm and read out by a megapixel CCD has been tested with muon and neutrino beams at CERN. With this prototype a two track resolution of 33 mu m was achieved with passing through muons. Images of neutrino interactions in a capillary bundle have also been acquired and analysed. Read-out chains based on Electron Bombarded CCD (EBCCD) and image pipeline devices are also investigated. Preliminary results obtained with a capillary bundle read out by an EBCCD are presented.

Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

The CERN WA95/CHORUS collaboration has been constructing a hybrid detector to search for ( ν μ - ν τ )-oscillations. An essential component of the detector is a scintillating fiber tracking system for precise track reconstruction of particles. The physics motivation is explained, and the detector layout, the tracker design, its optoelectronic readout and test beam results are presented.

Abstract

A setup designed for the investigation of the properties of coherent scintillating fiber bundles and ribbons is described in some detail. The fiber readout is realized by a three stage image intensifier chain and a CCD matrix. A silicon strip detector telescope defines a precise reference system. The results of first measurements in a 5 GeV/ c hadron beam at the CERN proton synchrotron demonstrate the capabilities of the apparatus.

Abstract

A scintillating-microfibre, tracking detector has been used at the CERN Omega spectrometer to record the interactions of 340 GeV/ cπ − particles incident on a fixed target. The detector - based on coherent bundles of ∼36 μ m diameter, PMP-doped plastic fibres - was oriented so as to give views of interactions in the plane perpendicular to the incoming pions. Additional event information was provided by a series of 20 and 50 μm pitch silicon-microstrip detectors, placed near to the fibres, and by the spectrometer. An account is given of the contribution of the scintillating-fibre device in obtaining full event reconstruction.

Abstract

• We looked retrospectively for all cases of toxic epidermal necrolysis that occurred in France over a 5-year period to appreciate the incidence of this disorder and its drug etiology. Of the 399 cases identified, we obtained detailed information on 344 cases and validated 253 cases. From response rates (66% to 98%), we estimated the actual total number of cases to be 333, and the incidence of toxic epidermal necrolysis in France to 1.2 cases per million per year. An independent estimation derived from death certificates gave a figure of 1.3 cases per million per year. When the number of cases with a given drug present were related to the defined daily doses of that drug sold over the 5-year period, the highest ratios were for sulfadiazin (230 · 10 -8 ), isoxicam (41 · 10 -8 ), oxyphenbutazone (18 · 10 -8 ), phenytoin (14 · 10 -8 ), fenbufen (13 · 10 -8 ), and cotrimoxazole (12 · 10 -8 ). This first nationwide study confirmed the rarity of toxic epidermal necrolysis. Within the two main classes of responsible drugs (antibacterial sulfonamides and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents) the risks linked to different drugs appeared quite different, even for closely chemically related products. Abstract

WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Results are given on tests of large particle trackers for the detection of neutrino interactions in long-baseline experiments. Module prototypes have been assembled using TiO2-doped polycarbonate panels. These were subdivided into cells of ∼1 cm 2 cross-section and 6 m length, filled with liquid scintillator. A wavelength-shifting fibre inserted into each cell captured a part of the scintillation light emitted when a cell was traversed by an ionizing particle. Two different fibre-readout systems have been tested: an optoelectronic chain comprising an image intensifier and an electron-bombarded CCD (EBCCD); and a hybrid photodiode (HPD). New, low-cost liquid scintillators have been investigated for applications in large underground detectors. Testbeam studies have been performed using a commercially available liquid scintillator. The number of detected photoelectrons for minimum-ionizing particles crossing a module at different distances from the fibre readout end was 6–12 with the EBCCD chain and a mirror at the non-readout end; 4–10 with the HPD and no mirror. The light-attenuation lengths in the fibres were ∼9.4 m with the EBCCD and ∼6.4 m with the HPD. The detector response to electron showers has also been measured. After ten radiation lengths of lead, the transverse position of the incoming electron was determined with a precision of a few millimetres for electrons of 4 GeV , and with a precision of 1.5– 2.0 cm for electrons of 1 GeV .

Abstract

Evidence of the " renard " phenomenon during exceptionnal floods of the Boulet-Blagour springs (Causse de Martel, Lot). Every three or four years there is an exceptional flooding, different from the numerous floods observed each year at the Boulet and Blagour karstic springs. Not only is the intensity of this phenomenal flood different but so is its mechanism. Its interpretation needs the realisation of a reduced model that displays a mechanism similar to the "renard" effect or fluidisation, well known by hydrauliciens (dam construction) and ignored until now by hydrologists., Tous les trois ou quatre ans en moyenne, il se produit aux sources karstiques du Boulet et du Blagour une crue exceptionnelle. Exceptionnelle par son intensité, mais surtout par son mécanisme, différent de celui des crues habituelles. Abstract

Results are given on tests of a high-resolution tracking hodoscope based on layers of \hbox{26-$\mu$m-bore} glass capillaries filled with organic liquid scintillator (1-methylnaphthalene doped with R39). The detector prototype consisted of three 2-mm-thick parallel layers, with surface areas of $2.1 \times 21$~cm$^2$. The layers had a centre-to-centre spacing of 6~mm, and were read by an optoelectronic chain comprising two electrostatically focused image intensifiers and an Electron-Bombarded Charge-Coupled Device (EBCCD). Tracks of cosmic-ray particles were recorded and analysed. The observed hit density was 6.6~hits/mm for particles crossing the layers perpendicularly, at a distance of 1~cm from the capillaries' readout end, and 4.2~hits/mm for particles at a distance of 20~cm. A track segment reconstructed in a single layer had an rms residual of $\sim$~20~$\mu$m, and allowed determination of the track position in a neighbouring layer with a precision of $\sim$~170~$\mu$m. This latter value corresponded to an rms angular resolution per layer of about 30~mrad. A comparison is made between capillary layers and silicon microstrip planes.

Abstract

A technique based on liquid scintillator with wavelength-shifting fibre readout is interesting for large-mass neutrino detectors. In this paper, we present the first results obtained with a laboratory prototype assembled at CERN. In the configuration tested, a large light yield has been observed and attenuation lengths of the order of 3.2 m have been measured. As a comparison, we also measured the attenuation length of the fibres in air using the same setup. No significant difference in attenuation length between the fibres in air and in liquid was measured.

Abstract

Experiments such as CHORUS at CERN require the inspection of a large amount of nuclear emulsion plates exposed to particle beams. Rare events need to be found, measured and analyzed. Their features are stored as grains in microscopic dimensions in a 3D stack of plates. A new, fully automatic immersion microscope system was developed for this purpose. It features high resolution, small depth of focus, large working distance, large field of view and synchronization of illumination and detector. An additional requirement is given by variations in the refraction index and in the relative thickness of immersion oil and emulsion. The approach used here is an imaging system based on a various objective lens with extreme numerical aperture, large working distance and wide field, combined with a matched high-aperture Koehler illuminator. The light source is a mercury arc lamp, combined with a filter package for the g- line. It includes liquid crystal elements for synchronized shuttering and variable attenuation. The theoretical resolution is less than 1 micron in x, y, z within a volume of 0.5mm diameter times 1 mm scanning depth in all situations within a predefined index range. Three identical pieces of the system have been built. The identical pieces of the system have been built. The experimentally measured resolution confirms the expectations and is better than 1 micron in all three dimensions. This is the result of a complex process of system design and manufacturing, unifying optical, opto-mechanical and opto-electronical contributions. This process spans from the early stages of feasibility and manufacturing up to the test and adjustment procedures. The three prototypes are operational since the fall of 1998 in the frame of the CHORUS project. Practical experience and application results are presented.

Abstract

The CERN RD46 Collaboration is developing a new high resolution tracking detector based on glass capillaries filled with liquid scintillator. In this framework we have built a read-out chain based on a newly developed device: the Megapixel Electron Bombarded CCD (EBCCD). This device is a hybrid image-intensifier tube, with a 1024×1024 pixels CCD chip in place of the phosphor screen. The tube has a 40 mm diameter photocathode, is gateable and zoomable from 0.62 to 1.3. The EBCCD tube is able to detect single photoelectrons, with a signal to noise ratio better than 10. This Megapixel multichannel photon counting device is attractive for many applications in high-energy physics, astrophysics, biomedical diagnostics, and very low-light imaging.

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop high resolution tracking devices based on thin glass capillary arrays filled with liquid scintillator. This technique provides high hit densities and a position resolution better than 20 μm. The radiation hardness of more than 100 Mrad makes capillary arrays superior to other types of tracking devices with comparable performance. The technique is attractive for inner tracking in collider experiments, micro-vertex devices, or active targets for short-lived particle detection in high-energy physics experiments. During 1996 and 1997, two prototype capillary bundles (1.8 m and 0.9 m in length) were put into operation. One of them was equipped with a conventional opto-electronic read-out chain and the other, for the first time, with a new device, the Electron-Bombarded CCD (EBCCD) imaging tube. The development of planar capillary layers is another aspect of the R&D activity. Details of the design and the performance are given.

Abstract

We have developed a new detector technique that allows high quality imaging of ionizing particle tracks with very high spatial and time resolution. Central to this technique are liquid-core fibres of about 20 μm diameter read out by an optoelectronic system including a CCD. The fibres act simultaneously as target, detector and light guides. A large-volume prototype, consisting of 5 × 10 5 capillaries of 20 μm diameter and 180 cm length, has been tested in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam. A sample of high-multiplicity neutrino interactions was recorded, demonstrating the imaging quality of this detector. First results from the reconstruction of these events are reported. A track residual of 28 μm and a vertex resolution of 30 μm has been achieved. Future applications of capillary detectors for neutrino and beauty physics are being investigated within the framework of the RD46 collaboration.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

We present the performance of a high-speed gateable vacuum image pipeline, which permits individual images to be delayed and selected from continuous non-repetitive image stream. This device is composed of a vacuum tube equipped with a photocathode at one end, a phosphor screen at the other end, and a system of metal grids in between. Photoelectrons produced by the images focused on the photocathode, are guided by a uniform magnetic field, parallel to the tube axis. By changing the grid potentials, the drift time of the photoelectrons inside the tube can be varied from 0.35 to 1.5 μs. An image can then be selected by an external trigger with a time resolution in the range of 4–30 ns, depending on the delay time. The selected photoelectrons are finally accelerated onto the phosphor screen, set at 10 kV, where they reproduce the desired image. With a magnetic field of 0.1 T, a spatial resolution of 33 lp/mm was obtained. The high spatial and time resolution make this device an interesting tool for high-energy physics and astrophysics experiments, and for high-speed photography.

Abstract

We present the results obtained with a prototype of a high speed gateable Vacuum Image Pipeline (VIP) for selection of non-repetitive images from a continuous stream. It allows snapshots with a very short exposure time (of the order of 10 nanoseconds) to be accepted (or rejected) after a decision time of a few microseconds. The VIP is a vacuum tube equipped with a photocathode, a system of metallic grids and a phosphor screen. Photoelectrons produced by the images focused on the photocathode are guided by a uniform magnetic field parallel to the tube axis. By acting on the grid potentials, the drift time of the photoelectrons inside the tube can be adjusted between 0.3 and 2 microseconds. An image among many others can then be selected by an external trigger with a time resolution between 4 and 30 ns depending on the delay time. The selected photoelectrons are finally accelerated by a high potential (+15 kV) onto the phosphor screen where they reproduce the triggered image. A spatial resolution of 33 lp/mm at a magnetic field of 0.1 T has been measured. Abstract

A hybrid image intensifier zoon tube, based on a thinned backside electron-bombarded CCD (EBCCD) 1024 X 1024 pixels (13.1 X 13.1 micrometers 2), to be used for the readout of a high resolution fiber detector in a high energy physics experiment, has been designed, manufactured and tested. This tube has a photocathode diameter of 40 mm and allows to change the image magnification (M) from 0.6 to 1.3. Owing to the low energy threshold of the EBCCD (2.5 keV) and the high operational voltage (15 kV), a gain (electrons per photoelectron) of 4000 has been attained. A spatial resolution of about 40 lp/mm (15% MTF) with an illumination of 2 (DOT) 10(superscript -4 lux and has been achieved. The EBCCD tube is gateable by applying appropriate voltage pulses to the focusing electrode. The high gain and the excellent space resolution of this device make it very interesting for many applications in high energy physics, astrophysics, medical diagnostics and very low light imaging.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract

Searches for the decay of short-lived particles require real time, high-resolution tracking in active targets, which in the case of neutrino physics should be of large volume. The possibility of achieving this by using glass capillaries filled with organic liquid scintillator is being investigated in the framework of the CHORUS experiment at CERN. In this paper, after outlining the application foreseen, advances in the tracking technique are discussed and results from tests are reported. An active target of dimensions 180 × 2 × 2 cm3 has been assembled from capillaries with 20 μm diameter pores. The readout scheme currently in operation allows the reading of ∼ 5 × 105 channels using a single chain of image intensifiers having a resolution of σ ∼ 20 μm. Following the development of new liquid scintillators and purification methods an attenuation length of ∼3 m has been obtained. This translates into a hit density of 3.5 per mm for a minimum-ionizing particle that crosses the active target at a distance of 1 m from the readout end.

Abstract

This paper is a presentation of results from tests in a 5 GeV/ c hadron beam of detectors based on liquid-core scintillating fibres, each fibre consisting of a glass capillary filled with organic liquid scintillator. Fibre readout was performed via an Electron-Bombarded Charge-Coupled Device (EBCCD) image tube, a novel instrument that combines the functions of a high-gain, gated image intensifier and a Charge-Coupled Device. Using 1-methylnaphthalene doped with 3 g/l of R45 as liquid scintillator, the attenuation lengths obtained for light propagation over distances greater than 16 cm were 1.5 m in fibres of 20 μm core and 1.0 m in fibres of 16 μm core. For particles that crossed the fibres of 20 μm core at distances of ∼ 1.8 cm and ∼ 95 cm from the fibres' readout ends, the recorded hit densities were 5.3 mm −1 and 2.5 mm −1 respectively. Using 1-methylnaphthalene doped with 3.6 g/l of R39 as liquid scintillator and fibres of 75 μm core, the hit density obtained for particles that crossed the fibres at a distance of ∼ 1.8 cm from their readout ends was 8.5 mm −1 . With a specially designed bundle of tapered fibres, having core diameters that smoothly increase from 16 μm to 75 μm, a spatial precision of 6 μm was measured.

Abstract

Scintillating fibers are of growing interest in high energy physics for applications in calorimetry and in tracking detectors At present plastic scintillating fibers are mainly used in these applications because of their high light yield and their fast decay rates; however, in thin fibers, required for high spatial resolution, these suffer from low attenuation lengths. Moreover, cross-talk is still a severe problem. As alternatives we will discuss the following two concepts: (1) using Ce- and Tb-doped multicomponent glasses as active core material of glass fibers and (2) using liquid scintillator filled glass capillary arrays. The optical properties of the rare earth doped glasses are described and the scintillation efficiency of the fibers and fiber bundles utilizing these glasses as core material are presented. Broader applications appear to the possible with liquid scintillator filled capillary arrays. Suitable liquid scintillators with high refractive index solvents and locally emitting solutes with high yields, short decay times and large Stokes-shifts are available. Arrays can be produced with and without extra mural absorber in various sizes and shapes. Theoretical estimates show that reflection losses at the liquid/glass interface do not effect the overall transmission up to length/diameter ratios of 105. In addition recent results have shown that the system resists radiation doses in the 100 kGy range. Abstract

We describe the multistep avalanche chamber (MSAC) used in the experiment NA35 at CERN as photon detector of a ring imaging Cherenkov counter (RICH) that upgraded the experimental setup of a vertex streamer chamber by providing particle identification in the 1.5–3.5 GeV/c region. The chamber design contains some innovative technical solutions to limit the sparking rate and to allow the sensitive area to be larger than the present 50 × 50 cm2. The detector is read out optically using a CCD camera in conjunction with a system of light intensifiers, since the optical readout offers a convenient way to record events in a two-dimensional array. Construction details and test results are discussed.

Abstract

The capabilities of a new detector based on capillaries filled with liquid scintillator have been investigated. Tests have been performed using various scintillating cocktails and readout systems. With the best combinations, and for light propagation over a few centimetres, the hit density is as high as 5 hits/mm. For propagation over distances greater than 10 cm, an attenuation length of ∼95 cm is measured. A spatial resolution of σ ≅ 12 μ m is obtained with capillaries of 20 μm bore.

Abstract

We have developed a new plastic scintillator with the novel characteristic of highly localized light emission; scintillation and wavelength shifting take place within a few tens of micrometers of the primary ionization. The new scintillator consists of a scintillating polymer base [polyvinyl toluene (PVT) or polystyrene (PS)] doped with a single wavelength shifter, 1-phenyl-3-mesityl-2-pyrazoline (PMP), which has an exceptionally large Stokes shift and therefore a comparatively small self-absorption of its emitted light. In other characteristics (e.g. scintillation efficiency and decay time) the performance of the new scintillator is similar to a good quality commercial plastic scintillator such as NE110.

Abstract

The WA84 experiment at CERN has been proposed as a study of heavy-flavour physics using a novel, high-resolution vertex detector, consisting of an active target assembled from coherent bundles of scintillating optical microfibers. This paper is a presentation of work carried out in the development of the vertex detector. Results from tests of prototypes of the detector in a charged-particle beam are reported, and the differences in the performance of glass and plastic active targets are discussed.

Abstract

Results of Two Water Tracings in the Ozania Amphitheatre (Picos de Europa, Spain). The Picos de Europa is a high mountain karst with a hydraulic flow organisation little known. Two water tracings with fluorescein have been carried out in the Ozania amphitheatre. These have led to the identification of two separate systems : 900 g of tracer injected in the Sima de Los Gorrinos emerged from the Fuente Prieta resurgence twenty hours later ; 10 kg of tracer injected in the Sima del Jou Luengu emerged from the Reo Molîn and Dobra Seca resurgences nine days later. The latter system appears the most interesting due to its complexity and to the vast area which seems to drain., Les Picos de Europa présentent en altitude un karst de haute montagne dont le fonctionnement hydraulique est encore mal connu. Deux colorations à la fluorescéine ont été effectuées dans l'amphithéâtre d'Ozania et ont permis d'identifier deux réseaux indépendants. -900 g de colorant injectés dans la Sima de los Gorrinos sont ressortis 20 heures après à la résurgence de Fuente Prieta. -10 kg de colorant injectés dans la Sima del Jou Luengu sont ressortis 9 jours plus tard aux deux résurgences de Reo Molîn et de Dobra Seca. Ce dernier réseau apparaît comme le plus intéressant tant par sa complexité que par les vastes zones qu'il semble drainer., Fabre Jean-Paul, Fabriol Robert.
