Abstract

We present a statistical study of 180 dust continuum sources identified in 33 massive cluster fields by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) over a total of 133 arcmin ^2 area, homogeneously observed at 1.2 mm. ALCS enables us to detect extremely faint millimeter sources by lensing magnification, including near-infrared (NIR) dark objects showing no counterparts in existing Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer images. The dust continuum sources belong to a blind sample ( N = 141) with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ≳ 5.0 (a purity of >0.99) or a secondary sample ( N = 39) with S/N = 4.0–5.0 screened by priors. With the blind sample, we securely derive 1.2 mm number counts down to ∼7 μ Jy, and find that the total integrated 1.2 mm flux is ${20.7}_{-6.5}^{+8.5}$ Jy deg ^−2 , resolving ≃80% of the cosmic infrared background light. The resolved fraction varies by a factor of 0.6–1.1 due to the completeness correction depending on the spatial size of the millimeter emission. We also derive infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) at z = 0.6–7.5 with the $1/{V}_{\max }$ method, finding the redshift evolution of IR LFs characterized by positive luminosity and negative density evolution. The total (= UV + IR) cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) at z > 4 is estimated to be ${161}_{-21}^{+25}$ % of the Madau and Dickinson measurements mostly based on rest-frame UV surveys. Although our general understanding of the cosmic SFRD is unlikely to change beyond a factor of 2, these results add to the weight of evidence for an additional (≈60%) SFRD component contributed by the faint millimeter population, including NIR-dark objects.

Abstract

Exploiting the fundamentally achromatic nature of gravitational lensing, we present a lens model for the massive galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3−7323 (SMACS J0723; z = 0.388) that significantly improves upon earlier work. Building on strong-lensing constraints identified in prior Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations, the mass model utilizes 21 multiple-image systems, 17 of which were newly discovered in Early Release Observation data from the JWST. The resulting lens model maps the cluster mass distribution to an rms spatial precision of 0.″32, and is publicly available. Consistent with previous analyses, our study shows SMACS J0723.3 to be well described by a single large-scale component centered on the location of the brightest cluster galaxy. However, satisfying all lensing constraints provided by the JWST data, the model points to the need for the inclusion of an additional, diffuse component west of the cluster. A comparison of the galaxy, mass, and gas distributions in the core of SMACS J0723 based on HST, JWST, and Chandra data reveals a concentrated regular elliptical profile along with tell-tale signs of a recent merger, possibly proceeding almost along our line of sight. The exquisite sensitivity of JWST’s NIRCam reveals in spectacular fashion both the extended intracluster light distribution and numerous star-forming clumps in magnified background galaxies. The high-precision lens model derived here for SMACS J0723 demonstrates the unprecedented power of combining HST and JWST data for studies of structure formation and evolution in the distant universe.

Abstract

The massive galaxy cluster El Gordo ( z = 0.87) imprints multitudes of gravitationally lensed arcs onto James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images. Eight bands of NIRCam imaging were obtained in the “Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science” (“PEARLS”) program. Point-spread function–matched photometry across Hubble Space Telescope and NIRCam filters supplies new photometric redshifts. A new light-traces-mass lens model based on 56 image multiplicities identifies the two mass peaks and yields a mass estimate within 500 kpc of (7.0 ± 0.30) × 10 ^14 M _⊙ . A search for substructure in the 140 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts confirms the two main mass components. The southeastern mass peak that contains the brightest cluster galaxy is more tightly bound than the northwestern one. The virial mass within 1.7 Mpc is (5.1 ± 0.60)×10 ^14 M _⊙ , lower than the lensing mass. A significant transverse velocity component could mean the virial mass is underestimated. We contribute one new member to the previously known z = 4.32 galaxy group. Intrinsic (delensed) positions of the five secure group members span a physical extent of ∼60 kpc. 13 additional candidates selected by spectroscopic/photometric constraints are small and faint, with a mean intrinsic luminosity ∼2.2 mag fainter than L ^* . NIRCam imaging admits a fairly wide range of brightnesses and morphologies for the group members, suggesting a more diverse galaxy population in this galaxy overdensity.

Abstract

In certain cases of astronomical data analysis, the meaningful physical quantity to extract is the ratio R between two data sets. Examples include the lensing ratio, the interloper rate in spectroscopic redshift samples, and the decay rate of gravitational potential and E _G to test gravity. However, simply taking the ratio of the two data sets is biased, since it renders (even statistical) errors in the denominator into systematic errors in R . Furthermore, it is not optimal in minimizing statistical errors of R . Based on Bayesian analysis and the usual assumption of Gaussian error in the data, we derive an analytical expression of the posterior probability density function P ( R ). This result enables fast and unbiased R measurement, with minimal statistical errors. Furthermore, it relies on no underlying model other than the proportionality relation between the two data sets. Even more generally, it applies to cases where the proportionality relation holds for the underlying physics/statistics instead of the two data sets directly. It also applies to the case of multiple ratios ( R → R = ( R _1 , R _2 , ⋯ )). We take the lensing ratio as an example to demonstrate our method. We take lenses as DESI imaging survey galaxies, and sources as DECaLS cosmic shear and Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing. We restrict the analysis to the ratio between CMB lensing and cosmic shear. The resulting P ( R ) values, for multiple lens–shear pairs, are all nearly Gaussian. The signal-to-noise ratio of measured R ranges from 4.9 to 8.4. We perform several tests to verify the robustness of the above result.

Abstract

Advances in astronomy led to the demand for measuring the spectra of multiple night sky objects simultaneously. Some of these Multi-Object Spectrographs use robotic systems that position optical fibers in the focal plane of the observing telescope. These systems rely on precise fiber placement in order to collect the light spectra of faint stars and galaxies. Here, we present how to design, control, and operate micro SCARA-like robots to position optical fibers to micrometer precision. As an illustrative example, we show the design and performance results of the SDSS-V fiber positioner, which has been build for the Apache Point Observatory and the Las Campanas Observatory with 500 units for each telescope.

Abstract

A system of 5020 robotic fiber positioners was installed in 2019 on the Mayall Telescope, at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The robots automatically retarget their optical fibers every 10–20 minutes, each to a precision of several microns, with a reconfiguration time of fewer than 2 minutes. Over the next 5 yr, they will enable the newly constructed Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to measure the spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will produce the largest 3D map of the universe to date and measure the expansion history of the cosmos. In addition to the 5020 robotic positioners and optical fibers, DESI’s Focal Plane System includes six guide cameras, four wave front cameras, 123 fiducial point sources, and a metrology camera mounted at the primary mirror. The system also includes associated structural, thermal, and electrical systems. In all, it contains over 675,000 individual parts. We discuss the design, construction, quality control, and integration of all these components. We include a summary of the key requirements, the review and acceptance process, on-sky validations of requirements, and lessons learned for future multiobject, fiber-fed spectrographs.

Abstract

The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (http://legacysurvey.org/) are a combination of three public projects (the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey, and the Mayall z-band Legacy Survey) that will jointly image ≈14,000 deg2 of the extragalactic sky visible from the northern hemisphere in three optical bands (g, r, and z) using telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The combined survey footprint is split into two contiguous areas by the Galactic plane. The optical imaging is conducted using a unique strategy of dynamically adjusting the exposure times and pointing selection during observing that results in a survey of nearly uniform depth. In addition to calibrated images, the project is delivering a catalog, constructed by using a probabilistic inference-based approach to estimate source shapes and brightnesses. The catalog includes photometry from the grz optical bands and from four mid-infrared bands (at 3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22 μm) observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite during its full operational lifetime. The project plans two public data releases each year. All the software used to generate the catalogs is also released with the data. This paper provides an overview of the Legacy Surveys project.

28. Model BOSS and eBOSS luminous red galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.0 using SubHalo Abundance Matching with three parameters

Abstract

SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) is an empirical method for constructing galaxy catalogues based on high-resolution N-body simulations. We apply SHAM on the UNIT simulation to simulate SDSS BOSS/eBOSS luminous red galaxies (LRGs) within a wide redshift range of 0.2 < $z$ < 1.0. Besides the typical SHAM scatter parameter σ, we include $v$smear and Vceil to take into account the redshift uncertainty and the galaxy incompleteness, respectively. These two additional parameters are critical for reproducing the observed 2PCF multipoles on 5–25$\, h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$. The redshift uncertainties obtained from the best-fitting $v$smear agree with those measured from repeat observations for all SDSS LRGs except for the LOWZ sample. We explore several potential systematics but none of them can explain the discrepancy found in LOWZ. Our explanation is that the LOWZ galaxies might contain another type of galaxies that needs to be treated differently. The evolution of the measured σ and Vceil also reveals that the incompleteness of eBOSS galaxies decreases with the redshift. This is the consequence of the magnitude lower limit applied in eBOSS LRG target selection. Our SHAM also set upper limits for the intrinsic scatter of the galaxy–halo relation, given a complete galaxy sample: σint < 0.31 for LOWZ at 0.2 < $z$ < 0.33, σint < 0.36 for LOWZ at 0.33 < $z$ < 0.43, and σint < 0.46 for CMASS at 0.43 < $z$ < 0.51. The projected 2PCFs of our SHAM galaxies also agree with the observational ones on the 2PCF fitting range.

29. In situ chemical composition and density measurements of Earth’s thermosphere, exosphere, and ionosphere with CHESS

Abstract

The Constellation of High-performance Exosphere Science Satellites (CHESS) mission is a dedicated CubeSat mission designed to analyse the upper atmosphere of Earth in situ. The status of this dynamic region is driven by external and internal forces, causing variations in temperature, the chemical composition, total number density, and their altitude profiles. Although such measurements are key for our understanding of the origin and evolution of the habitable atmosphere of Earth, the community lacks updated, local, detailed measurements. Recent technological advancements in instrumentation enable sensitive in situ measurements of the exosphere–thermosphere–ionosphere region with small satellites. On one hand, the miniaturisation of a high-performance mass spectrometer enables measurements of the chemical composition and density. On the other hand, a new generation of dual-frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers enable precise orbit determination. From the knowledge of the evolution of the orbits, the atmospheric drag and hence, the density can be derived complementary. Additionally, the GNSS receivers provide the dispersive line-of-sight total electron content from the linear combination of dual-frequency carrier phase measurements that can be converted into total column density between the spacecraft in low Earth orbit and the satellites of the GNSS in higher orbits. Thanks to the elliptic orbit of the spacecraft, the altitude profiles of these number density measurements of species can be converted into exospheric temperatures. Measuring with a constellation will allow for overcoming the space-time degeneracy to analyse the drivers and mechanisms including basic physics in detail. The CHESS mission is scheduled for launch in early 2026. Once available, the collected data will also be compared with atmospheric escape data on, for example, Venus and Mars to provide insights into the different evolution of these rocky, initially comparable planets.

The robots automatically retarget their optical fibers every 10–20 minutes, each to a precision of several microns, with a reconfiguration time of fewer than 2 minutes. Over the next 5 yr, they will enable the newly constructed Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to measure the spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will produce the largest 3D map of the universe to date and measure the expansion history of the cosmos. In addition to the 5020 robotic positioners and optical fibers, DESI's Focal Plane System includes six guide cameras, four wave front cameras, 123 fiducial point sources, and a metrology camera mounted at the primary mirror. The system also includes associated structural, thermal, and electrical systems. In all, it contains over 675,000 individual parts. We discuss the design, construction, quality control, and integration of all these components. Next-generation spectroscopic surveys such as the MegaMapper, MUltiplexed Survey Telescope (MUST), MaunaKea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), and Wide Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) are foreseen to increase the number of galaxy/quasar redshifts by an order of magnitude, with hundred millions of spectra that will be measured at $z>2$. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis for these surveys on the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO), the redshift-space distortion (RSD) measurement, the non-Gaussianity amplitude $f_{\rm NL}$, and the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$. Abstract

Lunar resources is one of the many new putative business models that may transform space logistics. Yet it competes with Earth-based resources, in a complex trade-off involving both tech development & socioeconomic dynamics. This study models the size vs. time of a future resource ecosystem focused on water for exploration and satellite refueling, in cis-lunar space. We use a recently-developed multi-methodology concept based on System Dynamics and scenario planning, characterizing uncertainties. Top critical uncertainties include the accessibility of resource finds, and government investment into lunar resources, demarcating 2 particularly illustrative scenarios: Moonopolis and Apollo 2.0 - a rosy and a low-resources future. Concurrently, a System Dynamics model with 7 interacting systems is developed: exploration, production, demand, satellite industry, R&D, natural resources, and government. It is based on models of other industries (e.g. oil) and can express the scenarios. Uncertainties in 25 variables are estimated, and sensitivity analysis of ecosystem size is performed globally using variance-based measures, including interaction effects. These show (a) systems are tightly coupled, (b) variable importance is sensitive to the baseline. Three variables are crucial: government support to production development, production firms’ re-investment, and growth of the GEO telecom satellite industry. A lunar resources ecosystem with $32B economic impact after 20 years is plausible, given excellent government support to production capacity, high growth in GEO satellites, early demand and large initial resource discoveries. The main contributions are a novel holistic model of the dynamics of a space resources industry showing how to mix technical & socioeconomic parts, and a first case study of the methodology.

Abstract

In this paper, we solve the complete coordination problem of robotic fiber positioners using supervisory control theory. In particular, we model positioners and their behavioral specifications as discrete-event systems by the discretization of their motion spaces. We synthesize a coordination supervisor associated with a specific set of positioners. In particular, the coordination supervisor includes the solutions to the complete coordination problem of its corresponding positioners. Then, we use the backtracking forcibility technique of supervisory control theory to present an algorithm based on a completeness condition to solve the coordination problem similar to a reconfiguration problem. We illustrate the functionality of our method using an example.

Abstract

We present strong-lensing analyses of three galaxy clusters, RXJ2129.4+0009 (z=0.235), MS0451.6-0305 (z=0.55), and MACSJ2129.4-0741 (z=0.589), using the powerful combination of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-band observations, and Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectroscopy. In RXJ2129, we newly spectroscopically confirm 15 cluster members. Our resulting mass model uses 8 multiple image systems as we include a galaxy-galaxy lensing system North-East of the cluster, and is composed of 71 halos including one dark matter cluster-scale halo and 2 galaxy-scale halos optimized individually. For MS0451, we report the spectroscopic identification of 2 new systems of multiple images in the Northern region, and 112 cluster members. Our mass model uses 16 multiple image systems, and 146 halos, including 2 large-scale halos, and 7 galaxy-scale halos independently optimized. For MACSJ2129, we report the spectroscopic identification of one new multiple image system at z=4.41, and newly measure spectroscopic redshifts for 4 cluster members. Our mass model uses 14 multiple image systems, and is composed of 151 halos, including 2 large-scale halos and 4 galaxy-scale halos independently optimized. Our best models have rms of 0.29'', 0.6'', 0.74'' in the image plane for RXJ2129, MS0451, and MACSJ2129 respectively. This analysis presents a detailed comparison with the existing literature showing excellent agreements, and discuss specific studies of lensed galaxies, e.g. a group of submilimeter galaxies at z=2.9 in MS0451, and a bright z=2.1472 red singly imaged galaxy in MACSJ2129., 25 pages, 10 figures, 13 tables, accepted in MNRAS

Abstract

4MOST is a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under construction for ESO's 4m-VISTA telescope at Paranal, Chile. Its key specifications are: a large field of view of 4.4 square degrees, a high multiplex fibre positioner based on the tilting spine principle that positions 2436 science fibres in the focal surface of which 1624 fibres go to two low-resolution optical spectrographs (R = lambda/Delta lambda similar to 6500) and 812 fibres transfer light to the high-resolution optical spectrograph (R similar to 20,000). Currently, almost all subsystems are completed and full testing in Europe will be finished in spring 2023, after which 4MOST will be shipped to Chile. An overview is given of instrument construction and capabilities, the planned science of the consortium and the recently selected community programmes, and the unique operational scheme of 4MOST.

Abstract

One of the main goals of the JWST is to study the first galaxies in the Universe. We present a systematic photometric analysis of very distant galaxies in the first JWST deep field towards the massive lensing cluster SMACS0723. As a result, we report the discovery of two galaxy candidates at $z\sim16$, only $250$ million years after the Big Bang. We also identify two candidates at $z\sim 12$ and 6 candidates at $z\sim 9-11$. Our search extended out to $z\lesssim21$ by combining color information across seven NIRCam and NIRISS filters. By modelling the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) with \texttt{EAZY} and \texttt{BEAGLE}, we test the robustness of the photometric redshift estimates. While their intrinsic (un-lensed) luminosity is typical of the characteristic luminosity L$^*$ at $z>10$, our high-redshift galaxies typically show small sizes and their morphologies are consistent with disks in some cases. We introduce the LEnSed laeS in the Eboss suRvey (LESSER) project, which aims to search for lensed Lyman-$\alpha$ Emitters (LAEs) in the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The final catalog contains 361 candidate lensing systems. The lens galaxies are luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at redshift $0.4 < z < 0.8$, and the source galaxies are LAEs at redshift $2 < z < 3$. The spectral resolution of eBOSS ($\sim$2000) allows us to further identify the fine structures of Lyman-$\alpha$ ($\rm Ly\alpha$) emissions. Among our lensed LAE candidates, 281 systems present single-peaked line profiles while 80 systems show double-peaked features. Future spectroscopic/imaging follow-up observations of the catalog may shed light on the origin of diverse $\rm Ly\alpha$ line morphology, and provide promising labs for studying low mass dark matter haloes/subhaloes., Comment: 11 Pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted by MNRAS. Abstract

Exploiting the fundamentally achromatic nature of gravitational lensing, we present a lens model for the massive galaxy cluster SMACSJ0723.3-7323 (SMACSJ0723, z=0.388) that significantly improves upon earlier work. Building on strong-lensing constraints identified in prior Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations, the mass model utilizes 21 multiple-image systems, 17 of which were newly discovered in Early Release Observation (ERO) data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The resulting lens model maps the cluster mass distribution to an RMS spatial precision of 0.32'' and is publicly available. Consistent with previous analyses, our study shows SMACSJ0723.3-7323 to be well described by a single large-scale component centered on the location of the brightest cluster galaxy. However, satisfying all lensing constraints provided by the JWST data, the model point to the need for the inclusion of an additional, diffuse component west of the cluster. A comparison of the galaxy, mass, and gas distributions in the core of SMACSJ0723 based on HST, JWST, and Chandra data reveals a concentrated regular elliptical profile along with tell-tale signs of a recent merger, possibly proceeding almost along our line of sight. The exquisite sensitivity of JWST's NIRCAM reveals in spectacular fashion both the extended intra-cluster-light distribution and numerous star-forming clumps in magnified background galaxies. The high-precision lens model derived here for SMACSJ0723-7323 demonstrates the unprecedented power of combining HST and JWST data for studies of structure formation and evolution in the distant Universe., Comment: Updated to match the revised version submitted to ApJ - analysis, results and conclusions are unchanged. Abstract

Abdurro’uf et al., This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. Abstract

Cosmic voids defined as a subset of Delaunay Triangulation (DT) circumspheres have been used to measure the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) scale; providing tighter constraints on cosmological parameters when combined with matter tracers. These voids are defined as spheres larger than a given radius threshold, which is constant over the survey volume. However, the response of these void tracers to observational systematics has not yet been studied. In this work we analyse the response of void clustering to selection effects. Abstract

We present a new method to model the mass distribution of galaxy clusters that combines a parametric and a free-form approach to reconstruct cluster cores with strong lensing constraints. It aims at combining the advantages of both approaches, by keeping the robustness of the parametric component with an increased flexibility thanks to a free-form surface of B-spline functions. We demonstrate the capabilities of this new approach on the simulated cluster Hera, which has been used to evaluate lensing codes for the analysis of the Frontier Fields clusters. The method leads to better reproduction of the constraints, with an improvement by a factor $\sim3-4$ on the root-mean-square error on multiple-image positions, when compared to parametric-only approaches. The resulting models show a better accuracy in the reconstruction of the amplitude of the convergence field while conserving a high fidelity on other lensing observables already well reproduced. We make this method publicly available through its implementation in the Lenstool software., 19 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Blanchard, A., et al., Today, thanks in particular to the results of the ESA Planck mission, the concordance cosmological model appears to be the most robust to describe the evolution and content of the Universe from its early to late times. It summarizes the evolution of matter, made mainly of dark matter, from the primordial fluctuations generated by inflation around 10 second after the Big Bang to galaxies and clusters of galaxies, 13.8 billion years later, and the evolution of the expansion of space, with a relative slowdown in the matter-dominated era and, since a few billion years, an acceleration powered by dark energy. But we are far from knowing the pillars of this model which are inflation, dark matter and dark energy. Comprehending these fundamental questions requires a detailed mapping of our observable Universe over the whole of cosmic time. The relic radiation provides the starting point and galaxies draw the cosmic web. JAXA’s LiteBIRD mission will map the beginning of our Universe with a crucial test for inflation (its primordial gravity waves), and the ESA Euclid mission will map the most recent half part, crucial for dark energy. The mission concept GAUSS, described in this White Paper, aims at being a mission to fully map the cosmic web up to the reionization era, linking early and late evolution, to tackle and disentangle the crucial degeneracies persisting after the Euclid era between dark matter and inflation properties, dark energy, structure growth and gravitation at large scale.

Shadab, Alam et al., We present the cosmological implications from final measurements of clustering using galaxies, quasars, and Lyα forests from the completed Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) lineage of experiments in large-scale structure. These experiments, composed of data from SDSS, SDSS-II, BOSS, and eBOSS, offer independent measurements of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements of angular-diameter distances and Hubble distances relative to the sound horizon, rd, from eight different samples and six measurements of the growth rate parameter, fσ8, from redshift-space distortions (RSD). This composite sample is the most constraining of its kind and allows us to perform a comprehensive assessment of the cosmological model after two decades of dedicated spectroscopic observation. We show that the BAO data alone are able to rule out dark-energy-free models at more than eight standard deviations in an extension to the flat, ΛCDM model that allows for curvature. When combined with Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements of temperature and polarization, under the same model, the BAO data provide nearly an order of magnitude improvement on curvature constraints relative to primary CMB constraints alone. Independent of distance measurements, the SDSS RSD data complement weak lensing measurements from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) in demonstrating a preference for a flat ΛCDM cosmological model when combined with Planck measurements. The combined BAO and RSD measurements indicate σ8=0.85±0.03, implying a growth rate that is consistent with predictions from Planck temperature and polarization data and with General Relativity. When combining the results of SDSS BAO and RSD, Planck, Pantheon Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and DES weak lensing and clustering measurements, all multiple-parameter extensions remain consistent with a ΛCDM model. Regardless of cosmological model, the precision on each of the three parameters, ωΛ, H0, and σ8, remains at roughly 1%, showing changes of less than 0.6% in the central values between models. In a model that allows for free curvature and a time-evolving equation of state for dark energy, the combined samples produce a constraint ωk=-0.0022±0.0022. The dark energy constraints lead to w0=-0.909±0.081 and wa=-0.49-0.30+0.35, corresponding to an equation of state of wp=-1.018±0.032 at a pivot redshift zp=0.29 and a Dark Energy Task Force Figure of Merit of 94. The inverse distance ladder measurement under this model yields H0=68.18±0.79 km s-1 Mpc-1, remaining in tension with several direct determination methods; the BAO data allow Hubble constant estimates that are robust against the assumption of the cosmological model. In addition, the BAO data allow estimates of H0 that are independent of the CMB data, with similar central values and precision under a ΛCDM model. Our most constraining combination of data gives the upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses at mν, This paper represents an effort by both the SDSS-III and SDSS-IV collaborations. Abstract

This paper describes the second iteration in the development of a simulation tool that provides trade-offs of avionic architectures for future Active Debris Removal (ADR) space missions. Challenges of ADR missions lay in their ability to first detect and track a target, then perform proximity operation and capture. All these mission phases imply a variety of sensors which are mainly needed for the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) of the spacecraft. First, sensors outputs need to be processed to retrieve position and attitude estimation of the target, then results are transmitted to the GNC algorithms for precise navigation. To obtain accurate target information, the algorithms require a high input data rate and multiple sensor sources. The first one guarantees constant tracking and the second prevents any biasing. Furthermore, due to orbital mechanism and potential low ground coverage, data have to be analyzed on-board to satisfy a constant feed of the algorithms. A new version of the simulation tool has been developed to help design the high demanding avionic of the ADR mission, ClearSpace-1 (CS-1). It is designed to optimize the resources management inside the architecture. The simulator has to decide the set of instruments to use in conjunction with the types of algorithm to deploy. The goal is to find the optimal set that satisfies both the physical constrains such as available power and limit in the processing resources as well as requirements of the mission with mainly the accuracy on target tracking. This problem is solved using an Optimal Control (OC) approach with a Mixed Integer NonLinear Programming (MINLP) definition. The EPFL Space Center is using this tool to investigate multiple hardware configurations with specific ADR requirements for ClearSpace-1. It outputs which sensors to use during which time interval as well as the general hardware and software configuration. The optimizer part allows creation of preliminary scenario plans and helps in setting the requirements for the design of the high performance avionic.
