1. The endocast of the insular and extinct Sylviornis neocaledoniae (Aves, Galliformes), reveals insights into its sensory specializations and its twilight ecology

Abstract: Abstract Sylviornis neocaledoniae (Galliformes, Sylviornithidae), a recently extinct bird of New-Caledonia (Galliformes, Sylviornithidae) is the largest galliform that ever lived and one of the most enigmatic birds in the world. Herein, for the first time, we analyze its neuroanatomy that sheds light on its lifestyle, its brain shape and patterns being correlated to neurological functions. Using morphometric methods, we quantified the endocranial morphology of S. neocaledoniae and compared it with extinct and extant birds in order to obtain ecological and behavioral information about fossil birds. Sylviornis neocaledoniae exhibited reduced optic lobes, a condition also observed in nocturnal taxa endemic to predator-depauperate islands, such as Elephant birds. Functional interpretations suggest that S. neocaledoniae possessed a well-developed somatosensorial system and a good sense of smell in addition to its specialized visual ability for low light conditions, presumably for locating its food. We interpret these results as evidence for a crepuscular lifestyle in S. neocaledoniae.

2. A twig-like insect stuck in the Permian mud indicates early origin of an ecological strategy in Hexapoda evolution

Abstract: Abstract Full body impressions and resting traces of Hexapoda can be of extreme importance because they bring crucial information on behavior and locomotion of the trace makers, and help to better define trophic relationships with other organisms (predators or preys). However, these ichnofossils are much rarer than trackways, especially for winged insects. Here we describe a new full-body impression of a winged insect from the Middle Permian of Gonfaron (Var, France) whose preservation is exceptional. The elongate body with short prothorax and legs and long wings overlapping the body might suggests a plant mimicry as for some extant stick insects. These innovations are probably in relation with an increasing predation pressure by terrestrial vertebrates, whose trackways are abundant in the same layers. This discovery would possibly support the recent age estimates for the appearance of phasmatodean-like stick insects, nearly 30 million years older than the previous putative records. The new exquisite specimen is fossilized on a slab with weak ripple-marks, suggesting the action of microbial mats favoring the preservation of its delicate structures. Further prospections in sites with this type of preservation could enrich our understanding of early evolutionary history of insects.

Abstract: International audience; The erection of Orthacanthus buxieri Heyler & Poplin from the lower Permian locality of Buxieres-les- Mines (Allier, France) was based on a poorly prepared specimen with only a few parts of its anatomy visible. The supposedly related teeth have been regarded as possibly belonging to O. kounoviensis, a species already known from the Carboniferous–Permian of Germany and Czech Republic. The holotype of O. buxieri requires extensive preparation before it can be revised, but the description of Orthacanthus isolated teeth and dorsal spines from Buxieres-les-Mines nev- ertheless provides useful information, especially given that no precise description of this material has been provided so far. The aim of this description is to better understand the evolutionary history of the French Orthacanthus and its rela- tionships with the other European species. The studied material is assigned to O. kounoviensis. This is the latest occurrence of this genus in Europe and the presence of both juvenile and adult teeth indicate that Buxieres-les-Mines was probably one of the last suitable environments for its repro- duction. We also identify Orthacanthus cf. kounoviensis from the Muse oil-shale bed, the first record of this genus in the Autun Basin. This brings into question the relationships between the different Carboniferous–Permian basins of the Northern Massif Central and suggests that they could still have been in connection during the lower Permian, in con- trast to the central European basins, which seem to be more isolated from each other.

Abstract: International audience; A new dictyoneurid insect, Dictyoneura goujonorum n. sp. from the Latest Ghzelian-Asselian basin of Graissessac (Hérault, France) is described in details. It is represented by a wellpreserved specimen with wings of 32-35 mm long and 13-14 mm wide and other peculiar diagnostic characters such a MP with four branches and a CuP with three branches. As all the other Dictyoneura species are known from the Namurian and/or the Wesphalian, Dictyoneura goujonorum n. sp. is the youngest representative of the genus. It is also the first record of the order Palaeodictyoptera from the Graissessac basin. The Carboniferous-Permian palaeodictyopterans are well-known to have lived in rather humid swamp forests. The global warming and drying of the climate during the Permian and/or the rise of potential predators may be responsible of their extinction.

Abstract: This work received support from the CERCA programme (ICP) from the Generalitat de Catalunya. Newly discovered tetrapod footprints from the middle Permian Pelitic Formation of Gonfaron (Le Luc Basin, Var, France) are described in detail and assigned to the ichnogenus Hyloidichnus. These specimens are very well-preserved, with detailed trackways showing anatomical features, digit drag traces and continuous tail impressions. Together with other Hyloidichnus specimens from the same locality and from the University of Burgundy collections, they allow the identification of the possible trackmakers of Hyloidichnus: small Hyloidichnus footprints are correlated with captorhinomorphs with autopodia similar to Captorhinus whereas large Hyloidichnus footprints might be correlated with larger captorhinomorphs or other 'basal' (eventually stem-) moradisaurines. A detailed comparative analysis is proposed to better understand the locomotion style of the trackmakers. Starting from the reconstruction of the stance phase of Captorhinus, we document the swing phase of the fore- and hind-limbs of captorhinomorphs thanks to the continuous digit drag traces associated with Hyloidichnus. A link between gait and track preservation have been highlighted through the analysis of tail impressions and high-resolution 3D models. In all, this study increases our understanding of captorhinomorph locomotion and enhances the integration of both tracks and skeletal remains to highlight the biomechanics of Permian tetrapods.

Abstract: We describe a new species of mastodonsauroid temnospondyl from Algeria, Stanocephalosaurus amenasensis nov. sp., on the basis of two exquisite skulls from a Lagerstatte found in the lowermost formation of the Zarzaitine Series, Illizi Basin, in the area of “La Reculee”, In Amenas region, Algeria. The new species is characterized by subtriangular nostrils with concave lateral borders; small orbits; postfrontals posteriorly very wide; very elongate parietals; smoothly concave posterior margin of the skull; ovoid anterior palatal vacuities; very posteriorly pointed choanae; oval interpterygoid fenestrae; and a short anterior extension of the cultriform process of the parasphenoid. S. amenasensis is different than the Algerian taxa previously erected by Lehman (1971)–“Parotosaurus lapparenti” and “Wellesaurus bussoni”–which we consider nomina dubia. It enlarges the distribution of the genus in northern Gondwana and supports the Early-Middle Triassic age of the lowermost formation of the Zarzaitine Series. It also suggests that the local palaeoclimate was very seasonal and these aquatic amphibians died massively in a dewatering sebkha.

Abstract: Climate models indicate increased desertification in the continental interior of Pangea during the Permian, which would have affected the composition of the flora and fauna. We present a multi-proxy paleoenvironmental reconstruction of a terrestrial ecosystem in central Pangea of Lopingian age. The reconstruction is based on biological and physical data from the Moradi Formation, located in the Tim Mersoi sub-Basin, northern Niger. Paleosols and sedimentological evidence indicate that the prevailing climate was semi-arid to very arid with marked intervals of high water availability. Carbon stable isotope data from organic matter and paleosols suggest that both the soil productivity and actual evapotranspiration were very low, corresponding to arid conditions. Histological analysis of pareiasaur bones shows evidence of active metabolism and reveals distinct growth marks. These interruptions of bone formation are indicative of growth rhythms, and are considered as markers for contrasting seasonality or episodic climate events. The macrofossil floras have low diversity and represent gymnosperm-dominated woodlands. Most notable are ovuliferous dwarf shoots of voltzian conifers, and a 25-m long tree trunk with irregularly positioned branch scars. The combined biological and physical evidence suggests that the Moradi Formation was deposited under a generally arid climate with recurring periods of water abundance, allowing for a well-established ground water-dependent ecosystem. With respect to its environment, this system is comparable with modern ecosystems such as the southern African Namib Desert and the Lake Eyre Basin in Australia, which are discussed as modern analogues.

Abstract: International audience; The dicynodonts are an emblematic group of herbivorous therapsids, which have survived thePermian–Triassic (PT) crisis. Laotian dicynodonts from stratigraphically well-constrained beds, using U–Pbon zircon dating, bring new insights into terrestrial faunas of Southeast Asia during the Early Triassic. Theyhave already briefly been described but their phylogenetic relationships were never been investigated. Reexaminationof the Laotian dicynodonts, three well-preserved skulls, indicates that they belong to two newspecies. Our phylogenetic analysis within Dicynodontia indicates that 1) gen. et sp. nov. 1 is closely relatedto some ”Dicynodon ”- grade taxa; and 2) gen. et sp. nov. 2 is a stem taxon to Kannemeyeriiformes. Thephylogenetic affinities of these new Laotian dicynodonts allow to discuss about the recovery of theterrestrial tetrapods during the Early Triassic: the survival of a Permian lineage across the PT crisis and/or arapid recovery with a new occurrence in the Early Triassic. The Laotian dicynodonts also shed new light onthe debated paleogeographic issues concerning the evolution of Southeast Asia from the late Paleozoic tothe early Mesozoic, particularly on the timing of the collision between the Indochina, the South China andthe North China blocks. The Early Triassic age of the two new Laotian dicynodonts, their essentiallyterrestrial lifestyle, and the phylogenetic affinities between gen. et sp. nov. 2 and Early Triassic ChineseKannemeyeriiformes, suppose a land connection between the Indochina Block and other dicynodontbearing continents as early as the Early Triassic.

Abstract: Permian tetrapod fossils were discovered in the Tanzanian Ruhuhu Formation in 1963, but they have received far less attention than the tetrapods of the overlying Usili (formerly Kawinga) Formation. Here, we describe two dicynodonts collected in the Ruhuhu Formation in 2008. Abajudon kaayai, gen. et sp. nov., is represented by a partial skull and mandible and is characterized by autapomorphic upper teeth that are triangular in cross-section, have procurved tips, and bear a deep groove on the mesial surface. Although it shows similarities to taxa such as Endothiodon and Chelydontops, the exact relationships between A. kaayai and other dicynodonts are uncertain. The second specimen also consists of a partial skull and mandible. We refer it to cf. Abstract: Fossil-bearing shale specimens that include sulfides in their compositions are chemically reactive and sometimes also mechanically fragile. This decay is often related to iron sulfate efflorescence resulting from the oxidation of sulfide compounds. The processes underlying these degradations are poorly known, thus impeding the elaboration of curative or preventive treatments. The present contribution aims to identify the origin of museum specimen alterations. It focuses on the Flouest collection housed at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN, Paris, France) and originating from the Autun Basin (Saone-et-Loire, France, Permian). To evaluate the alteration of MNHN specimens, it appeared necessary to compare their composition with that of unaltered shale so as to identify chemical changes occurring during ageing. Therefore, new material was collected in the Autun Basin, among others on the locality of Muse that corresponds to the same lithostratigraphic unit as that of the MNHN specimens. This material was, if necessary, artificially aged. The first part of this work, presented elsewhere, deals with the use of Xray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy for characterizing iron reactivity and speciation. It leads to the conclusion that the reactivity of iron in the shale matrix was limited and could not account for the large efflorescence of iron (II) sulfate occurring nearby the fossil. The second part presented here focuses on the use of S K-edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy for characterizing sulfur speciation and reactivity. Measurements were performed on the shale matrix and on thin layers of maceral found in the proximity of damaged areas. As sulfur may be found in association with calcium or organic matter, complementary techniques were implemented, such as FTIR spectroscopy, Rock-Eval pyrolysis (characterization of organic matter content) and Ca K-edge XANES (analysis of calcium speciation) spectroscopy. It was shown that sulfur is mainly related to thioether, sulfoxide, iron sulfide, and sulfates whereas calcium is mainly bound to carboxylate, carbonate and/or sulfate groups. FTIR analysis of the macerals confirmed the presence of vitrinite on damaged MNHN specimens. The low oxygen content of new shale samples determined by Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicates that the organic matter is well preserved, despite the fact that samples come from outcrop surface. In the newly collected material, sulfur is mainly related to organic sulfides (thioether) with a minor occurrence of iron sulfide. In the shale fraction of damaged MNHN specimens, sulfur is mostly oxidized into a mixture of iron and calcium sulfate. However, in the vitrinite layers of the same specimens, a large proportion of sulfur corresponds to organic sulfides. Also the oxidation of sulfur does not occur homogeneously but preferentially in the shale fraction, probably because this latter is porous whereas vitrinite is not. Artificial ageing of new shale material showed that the oxidation of organic sulfides could be reproduced at 90 degrees C, 80% of relative humidity. However, the obtained efflorescence almost exclusively corresponds to calcium sulfate whereas iron (II) sulfates are mostly observed on MNHN specimens. The new material collected on site is probably to be questioned, and future studies will have to select new samples with fossil remains. This will be the object of the third part of this work. Abstract: International audience; Le bassin de Luang Prabang (Laos) contient un registre fossile diversifié,composé, entre-autre, de dicynodontes et d’amphibien chronisuchien.Des datations U-Pb sur zircons par LA-ICP-MS (laser ablationinductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) ont été réalisées sur deséchantillons prélevés dans la gangue de ces fossiles. Ces datations ontpermis d’attribuer au Trias inférieur les Dicynodon sensu lato et le chronisuchien.Un dicynodonte kannemeyeriiforme attribué au genre Angonisaurusa quant à lui été daté du Trias supérieur (Norien).Ces résultats étendent de 20 Ma la répartition stratigraphique du genreAngonisaurus, connu jusque alors uniquement au Trias moyen (Anisien),invalidant l’utilisation potentielle de ce genre en tant que marqueurstratigraphique. La présence d’Angonisaurus dans le bassin deLuang Prabang étend aussi son aire de répartition et confirme, en accordavec des études récentes portant sur les kannemeyeriiformes, uneaire de répartition importante pour ce groupe pendant le Trias supérieur.La présence de dicynodontes herbivores et d’amphibiens chroniosuchienscarnivores au Trias inférieur dans le bassin de Luang Prabangsuggère la présence d’habitats variés occupés par des espèces ayant desrelations trophiques complexes. Ces caractéristiques diffèrent des écosystèmescontinentaux fortement perturbés décrits dans d’autres partiesdu monde au Trias inférieur. Ces caractéristiques singulières des écosystèmescontinentaux de Luang Prabang, potentiellement liées à l’évolutiongéodynamique du domaine Est Téthysien au Trias inférieur, suggèrentsoit une forte résilience de ces écosystèmes, soit que la crisepermo-triasique ait eu un impact limité sur ces écosystèmes.

Abstract: Dicynodont fossils were first collected in the Luangwa Basin, Zambia, in the 1920s, but limited detailed study and taxonomic uncertainty have obscured their biostratigraphic utility and their implications for topics such as dicynodont biogeography and the effects of the end-Permian extinction. Here we present a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the dicynodonts of the Luangwa Basin, taking into account specimens in all major museum collections and new material collected by our team in 2009. We recognize 14 dicynodont species from the Upper Permian Upper Madumabisa Mudstone: Pristerodon mackayi, Endothiodon sp., Diictodon feliceps, Compsodon helmoedi, Emydops sp., Dicynodontoides cf. D. nowacki, a new tusked cistecephalid, cf. Katumbia parringtoni, Kitchinganomodon crassus, Oudenodon bainii, Odontocyclops whaitsi, Dicynodon huenei, Syops vanhoepeni, and a new lystrosaurid. Previous reports of Lystrosaurus in the basin appear to be in error. In addition, we found no significant partitioning of dicynodont taxa in the northern and southern parts of the basin, despite substantial differences in preservation, indicating the presence of a single faunal assemblage in the Upper Permian. The Madumabisa dicynodont assemblage is best correlated with the Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone of South Africa. The shared presence of Dicynodon huenei and possibly Katumbia in the Luangwa Basin and the Ruhuhu Basin of Tanzania suggests that the Tanzanian Usili Formation also can be correlated with the Cistecephalus zone. Interestingly, the Madumabisa assemblage from Zambia is more similar to the coeval assemblage from South Africa, despite its closer geographic proximity to Tanzania. The Karoo and Ruhuhu basins also include more endemic species in the Permian than the Luangwa Basin. The Middle Triassic Ntawere Formation preserves four dicynodont species (Kannemeyeria lophorhinus, “Kannemeyeria” latirostris, Zambiasaurus submersus, Sangusaurus edentatus), which occur at two stratigraphic levels. The lower Ntawere assemblage resembles that of the Omingonde Formation of Namibia in the presence of Kannemeyeria lophorhinus and potentially Dolichuranus (if “K.” latirostris represents this taxon). The upper Ntawere assemblage shares the genus Sangusaurus with that of the Manda beds of Tanzania and includes the endemic Zambiasaurus. Comparisons of these assemblages to the Omingonde and Manda suggest that both are best correlated with the Cynognathus C subzone. When combined with data on other tetrapod taxa, our revised dicynodont assemblages contribute to an emerging picture of broad faunal similarity in southern and eastern Africa during the Late Permian, and increasing differentiation between the South African and other Karoo basins following the end-Permian extinction.

Abstract: International audience; In South-East Asia, sedimentary basins displaying continental Permian and Triassic deposits have been poorly studied. Among these, the Luang Prabang Basin (North Laos) represents a potential key target to constrain the stratigraphic and structural evolutions of South-East Asia. A combined approach involving sedimentology, palaeontology, geochronology and structural analysis, was thus implemented to study the basin. It resulted in a new geological map, in defining new formations, and in proposing a complete revision of the Late Permian to Triassic stratigraphic succession as well as of the structural organization of the basin. Radiometric ages are used to discuss the synchronism of volcanic activity and sedimentation. The Luang Prabang Basin consists of an asymmetric NE-SW syncline with NE-SW thrusts, located at the contact between Late Permian and Late Triassic deposits. The potential stratigraphic gap at the Permian- Triassic boundary is therefore masked by deformation in the basin. The Late Triassic volcaniclastic continental deposits are representative of alluvial plain and fluvial environments. The basin was fed by several sources, varying from volcanic, carbonated to silicic (non-volcanic). U-Pb dating of euhedral zircon grains provided maximum sedimentation ages. The stratigraphic vertical succession of these ages, from ca. 225, ca. 220 to ca. 216 Ma, indicates that a long lasting volcanism was active during sedimentation and illustrates significant variations in sediment preservation rates in continental environments (from 100 m/Ma to 3 m/Ma). Anhedral inherited zircon grains gave older ages. A large number of them, at ca. 1870 Ma, imply the reworking of a Proterozoic basement and/or of sediments containing fragments of such a basement. In addition, the Late Triassic (Carnian to Norian) sediments yielded to a new dicynodont skull, attributed to the Kannemeyeriiform group family, from layers dated in between 225 and 221 Ma (Carnian).

Abstract: International audience; In Laos (Southeastern Asia), Late Paleozoic sediments were identified by early French explorations across Indochina during the late 19th century (Pavie missions), but little work was undertaken to characterize the sedimentological and stratigraphical context until now. From detailed sedimentological and paleontological studies, we propose an interpretation of the depositional environment and of the stratigraphic context of series located on the right bank of the Mekong River in the Luang Prabang Basin where three main formations were described. The silicoclastic Red Claystone Formation, attributed to alluvial plain environment, contains large fragments of unidentified dicynodonts. The Limestones and Sandstones Formation preserves a new macrofloral assemblage displaying affinities with Middle to Late Permian Cathaysian floras of South China. This assemblage occurs as an intercalation within marine calcareous sandstones that have yielded a marine fauna, including the ammonoid Pseudotirolites sp. which indicates a Late Permian (Changhsingian) age. The well-developed Purple Claystones Formation yielded an abundant and well preserved Late Permian fauna composed of a carnivorous amphibian and numerous Dicynodon cranial and postcranial elements. This formation shows a vertical evolution from braided river to alluvial plain with sheet-flood sand bed and bed-load rivers, with a constant supply of volcanic clasts. Results from the analysis of the paleontological associations in the Luang Prabang Basin suggest that a continental communication between Laurussia and the Indochina Block existed during the Permian, allowing for migration of the terrestrial Dicynodon fauna.

Abstract: 8 pages; International audience; New chirotherioid traces (Synaptichnium, Chirotherium, Brachychirotherium, Isochirotherium), are described in the Argana Basin (High Atlas of Morocco). Seeing that these ichnotaxa are frequent in the Triassic, their occurrence in outcrops formerly mapped as Permian (T2 Member) has required detailed sedimentological and paleontological studies of the fossiliferous site. These studies clearly show that the ichnite-bearing strata belong actually to the T3 Member of the “regional Triassic”, i.e. lower member of the Timezgadiwine Formation, the age of which was, in fact, unknown up to now. The description of these ichnospecies and their statistical comparison with those of other Early and Middle Triassic areas, suggest an Olenekian age for this footprint site, and consequently for the T3. The trackmakers were Archosauriformes, some of which had autopodia less evolved than those of Anisian age. With Lepidosauria, they lived in a floodplain close to alluvial-fans.

Abstract: Resume Des sections transversales du femur de 46 especes de lissamphibiens ont ete etudiees pour determiner la relation entre mode de vie (aquatique, amphibie ou terrestre) et profil de compacite osseuse. Deux tests statistiques, qui incorporent la phylogenie, demontrent que le retour a un mode de vie aquatique chez les lissamphibiens s'accompagne d'une augmentation de la compacite femorale et d'une augmentation de la taille corporelle. Cependant, les especes d'amphibiens amphibies ne peuvent etre distinguees de leurs proches parents terrestres uniquement sur la base de leur compacite femorale ou de leur taille corporelle. Un modele mathematique obtenu en utilisant des regressions logistiques qui incorporent une ponderation phylogenetique nous a permis d'inferer le mode de vie de quatre stegocephales du Permien et du Trias. Les resultats sont coherents avec les interpretations precedentes. De plus, ils suggerent que cette methode pourrait fournir de precieuses donnees sur le mode de vie des premiers stegocephales. Abstract: International audience; Le Trône de fer de George R. Martin fourmille de mots de toutes sortes : ceux qui évoquent des paysages ruraux ou désertiques, des personnages hauts en couleur, les grandes maisons des nobles, des châteaux fortifiés ou aériens. Certains mots ont été oubliés, comme ceux des enfants de la forêt. D’autres sont précieusement gardés dans des livres qui font le régal de personnages aussi opposés que Tyrion Lannister et Samwell Tarly. Tous ces mots constituent les briques de plusieurs langues : tout d’abord la langue commune, mais aussi le dothraki, le haut valyrien, ou les dialectes braavien qui découlent de ce dernier. Selon le lieu, selon la classe sociale, les mots se prononcent de manières différentes, et se font le reflet d’une riche diversité de peuples et de cultures. Ils forment parfois des devises, comme "L’hiver vient" pour les Stark de Winterfell. Ils forment des proverbes, en particulier "Les mots sont du vent" que les personnages prononcent quand une promesse qu’on leur adresse leur semble vaine. Car donner sa parole se fait aisément, alors que tenir parole semble bien plus aléatoire dans ce monde d’intrigues, de revirements et de retournements de situation. Même les corbeaux prononcent des mots, en commençant par "grain !", exprimé avec insistance à chaque fois que l’animal ressent la faim. Selon les personnages qui parlent, selon les circonstances et les tensions, les mots sont perçus comme du vent, ou comme des flèches quand ils se font blessants, voire des cafards s’agitant sur des feuilles de parchemin, pour quelqu’un qui ne les maîtrise pas et qui ne sait pas bien lire. Vent, flèches, cafards : les mots ont plusieurs rôles et sont dotés de plusieurs sens possibles, et c’est l’objet de ce chapitre que de fournir quelques clés pour mieux les appréhender.
