In humans, associative memories are more susceptible to age-related cognitive decline (ARCD) than are recognition memories. Reduced cAMP/cGMP signaling in the hippocampus may contribute to ARCD. Here, we found that both aging and traumatic brain injury-associated dementia increased the expression of the cAMP/cGMP-degrading enzyme phosphodiesterase 11A (PDE11A) in the human hippocampus. Further, age-related increases in hippocampal PDE11A4 mRNA and protein were conserved in mice, as was the increased vulnerability of associative versus recognition memories to ARCD. Interestingly, mouse PDE11A4 protein in the aged ventral hippocampus (VHIPP) ectopically accumulated in the membrane fraction and filamentous structures we term "ghost axons." These age-related increases in expression were driven by reduced exoribonuclease-mediated degradation of PDE11A mRNA and increased PDE11A4-pS117/pS124, the latter of which also drove the punctate accumulation of PDE11A4. In contrast, PDE11A4-pS162 caused dispersal. Importantly, preventing age-related increases in PDE11 expression via genetic deletion protected mice from ARCD of short-term and remote long-term associative memory (aLTM) in the social transmission of food preference assay, albeit at the expense of recent aLTM. Further, mimicking age-related overexpression of PDE11A4 in CA1 of old KO mice caused aging-like impairments in CREB function and remote social-but not non-social-LTMs. RNA sequencing and phosphoproteomic analyses of VHIPP identified cGMP-PKG-as opposed to cAMP-PKA-as well as circadian entrainment, glutamatergic/cholinergic synapses, calcium signaling, oxytocin, and retrograde endocannabinoid signaling as mechanisms by which PDE11A deletion protects against ARCD. Together, these data suggest that PDE11A4 proteinopathies acutely impair signaling in the aged brain and contribute to ARCD of social memories.

During the past four decades, numerous reviews have been published on biological responses to stressful social environments. Reviews targeted for audiences in the social sciences emphasized biological outcomes while skipping over explanations of biological mechanisms. This chapter focuses on the details of the hormonal processes that “report” the state of the environment to the nervous system and regulate cognitive and motor responses to stressful social stimuli. Steroid hormones receive most attention. The chapter concludes with an outline of a sociological model of social action based on current knowledge of hormone actions. It shares some of the basic ideas of previous models such as affect control theory. However, the model proposes a broader role of stress hormones in human social behavior.

Photuris walldoxeyi Faust, new species, is described as a member of the Photuris versicolor species-group. It can be distinguished by its complex, unique flash-train + glow (FT+G) male courtship flash pattern, one of the most easily recognizable displays in North America. The primary FT+G male courtship pattern consists of a flash-train of 4–9 bright, quick, rhythmic pulses given every 0.4 seconds followed by a prolonged diffuse glow (ca. 1 second) of medium intensity at 17° C while the male hovers flashing near the tips of the branches of bald cypress and swamp vegetation growing in water. The primary FT+G is often followed immediately by a 2-pulsed secondary FT+G that effectively increases the male's visibility. Photuris walldoxeyi has thus far been confirmed in cypress and tupelo-cypress swamps of Mississippi, west Tennessee, and Indiana. During its month-long flight from May to mid-June, peak numbers are present ca. 900–1200 modified growing degree days.

There is increasing demand to integrate big data analytic systems using SQL. Given the vast ecosystem of SQL applications, enabling SQL capabilities allows big data platforms to expose their analytic potential to a wide variety of end users, accelerating discovery processes and providing significant business value. Most existing big data frameworks are based on one particular programming model such as MapReduce or Graph. However, data scientists are often forced to manually create adhoc data pipelines to connect various big data tools and platforms to serve their analytic needs. When the analytic tasks change, these data pipelines may be costly to modify and maintain. In this paper we present SQL-SA, a polymorphic and parallelizable SQL scalar and aggregate infrastructure in Aster 6.20. This infrastructure extends Aster 6's MapReduce and Graph capabilities to support polymorphic user-defined scalar and aggregate functions using flexible SQL syntax. The implementation enhances main Aster components including query syntax, API, planning and execution extensively. Integrating these new user-defined scalar and aggregate functions with Aster MapReduce and Graph functions, Aster 6.20 enables data scientists to integrate diverse programming models in a single SQL statement. The statement is automatically converted to an optimal data pipeline and executed in parallel. Using a real world business problem and data, Aster 6.20 demonstrates a significant performance advantage (25%+) over Hadoop Pig and Hive.

This study presents a test of general life history theory by estimating the association between perceived environmental threat (PET) and reproductive outcomes among American youth. Data for the study came from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997–2009, which consists of a nationally representative sample of youth. Analyses were based on a subsample of N =4748 respondents who were aged 12–14 years in 1997; reported having no biological children in 1997; and, for females, were not pregnant at the time of the 1997 interview. PET was measured using 11 questionnaire items that asked respondents about experiences with violent assaults from peers, witnessing violent assaults, and nonviolent crime victimization. First childbirth occurred earlier among respondents who reported higher PET in 1997. Average fertility during the study period was also higher among respondents with higher PET. Male and female respondents' reproductive behaviors were similarly associated with PET. However, only among female respondents was the association between PET and fertility moderated by the quality of the household environment.

Agonistic stress (AS) is normally associated with the suppression of fertility behavior; however, there are conditions under which the association is reversed. In this article, we investigate the effects of AS using longitudinal data from a large sample (n=9731) of young adults in the United States. We find that repeated exposure to AS is associated with early fertility, higher fertility over a 10-year period, and low investment in long-term mating relationships. The association of AS with early fertility and mating behavior is mediated by antisocial preferences. However, the positive association between AS and fertility behavior over the long run is robust with respect to the controls in the model. We believe that our findings align well with studies showing increased reproductive effort in response to agonistic interactions with conspecifics.

Uncertainty exerts powerful influences on life history decisions. This has been demonstrated in experiments on nonhumans and in mathematical models. Studies of human populations are suggestive of the effects of uncertainty, but they rely on measures of environmental stress. In this paper, we derive a new measure of uncertainty, upsilon (υ), for use in non-experimental studies. We estimate its association with reproductive behaviors in a longitudinal panel sample of adolescents in the United States. Results show upsilon's internal structure is consistent with theoretical models of uncertainty. Its associations with reproductive outcomes are also consistent with theoretical predictions. Upsilon seems to have its largest effect on the timing of fertility-increasing the odds of early fertility by a factor of 7, net of the effects of control variables. We discuss our findings for the association between υ and the timing of reproductive effort as well as our future research on υ.

This study presents an application of a three-dimen- sional kriging technique to estimate spatial distribution of total mercury (Hg) in the Cedar-Ortega Rivers watershed located in the lower St. Johns River basin, Florida. The kriging procedures, including preliminary data analysis, structural data analysis and the log kriging estimation, are presented. Results show watershed wide Hg contamination of river sediment to a depth of 1.0 m. A three-dimensional plot of Hg against the Florida Sediment Assess- ment Guidelines (i.e., the probable effect level or PEL) demon- strates that the Cedar River is more contaminated with Hg than the rest of the watershed. The maximum sediment depth with Hg concentrations above PEL value (0.696 mg/kg) is 1.5 m. Hg concen- trations at or above this level could pose a significant hazard to aquatic organisms. Analysis of the spatial distribution of Hg in the watershed finds multiple input sources. This study suggests that there is a need to identify the major sources of Hg in the watershed, and to determine the pathways that allow Hg to enter the river. Transition analysis was performed on production-scale chromatography data in order to monitor column performance. Analysis of over 300 transitions from several different chromatography operations demonstrated the utility of the techniques presented. Several of the transitions analyzed occurred on columns with known integrity breaches. The techniques proved sensitive for detection of these breaches. Seven transition calculations are presented, which were combined to produce a single overall integrity value for each column. In addition, principal components analysis (PCA) was used to detect shifts in the transition pattern, including those attributed to integrity breaches. Besides detection of integrity breaches, transition analysis proved useful in monitoring column efficiency over multiple column uses.

The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of a worksite weight management program on the reduction of weight and lipid levels in employees and their dependents. This retrospective study examined the impact of a one-on-one worksite weight management program. Patients with a body mass index (BMI)30, or a BMI25 and 2 or more risk factors were eligible for inclusion. Laboratory and biometric readings at study end were compared to those at baseline. In addition, the percentage change of patients reaching recommended guideline levels was reported. Of the 310 employees enrolled, 157 completed the program (50.6%) with an average weight loss of 5.6%. Improvement was realized for pre-post weight (-6.0 lbs.; P≤.0001), BMI (-0.9; P≤.0001), blood pressure (systolic: -2.6; P≤.0001; diastolic: -1.9; P≤.0001), total cholesterol (-5.9; P=.0485), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL; -4.7; P=.0004), and triglycerides (-7.6; P=.0060). The proportion moving to within guideline levels increased for the following metrics: normal BMI category (2.6%; P=.0060),30 BMI (10%; P≤.0001), systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings (7.7%; P=.0011 and 6.1; P=.0056, respectively), total cholesterol (6.5%; P=.0020), LDL (3.9%; P=.0396), and triglycerides (4.8; P=.0137). Retention in the worksite program was almost twice that seen in some commercial weight loss programs and significant improvements in laboratory and biometric readings were achieved. This study suggests that employer worksite-based programs may have an important role in improving the health of an employee population, which is of particular interest given the high prevalence of obesity and its attendant costs.

Black Belt counties in the southeastern United States are among the very poorest of all. Much of the economic, political, and social landscape of the region still echoes the problems of its antebellum past. Black white relations in the region are still characterized by antagonisms at all levels of social life. In this study, I examine the impact of social and material conditions of the Black Belt on mental health. I use data from a sample of Black and White workers in North Carolina, a state that re ects many of the racial dynamics found across the Southeast. Findings show that racial patterns in psychological distress are associated with the strength of political and economic elites in the Black Belt who have historically maintained power through racial subjugation. In conclusion, I discuss the theoretical implications of the findings.

In high-performance aircraft, the need for total environmental awareness coupled with high-g loading (often with abrupt onset) creates a predilection for cervical spine injury while the pilot is performing routine movements within the cockpit. In this study, the prevalence and severity of cervical spine injury are assessed via a modified cross-sectional survey of pilots of multiple aircraft types (T-38 and F-14, F-16, and F/A-18 fighters). Ninety-five surveys were administered, with 58 full responses. Fifty percent of all pilots reported in-flight or immediate post-flight spine-based pain, and 90% of fighter pilots reported at least one event, most commonly (> 90%) occurring during high-g (> 5 g) turns of the aircraft with the head deviated from the anatomical neutral position. Pre-flight stretching was not associated with a statistically significant reduction in neck pain episodes in this evaluation, whereas a regular weight training program in the F/A-18 group approached a significant reduction (mean = 2.492; p < 0.064). Different cockpit ergonomics may vary the predisposition to cervical injury from airframe to airframe. Several strategies for prevention are possible from both an aircraft design and a preventive medicine standpoint. Countermeasure strategies against spine injury in pilots of high-performance aircraft require additional research, so that future aircraft will not be limited by the human in control.

Methyl bromide has been named as an ozone-depleting chemical and there is a risk that it may be banned in the near future. The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, it discusses an approach for incorporating the human health impacts of atmospheric environmental degradation in ex ante research evaluation of agricultural projects. Second, it applies this approach in an economic assessment of a collaborative research project proposed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Forest Research Institute of Malaysia for funding by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.

Changes to pension law contained in last year's GATT trade legislation may have a substantial impact on employers with underfunded pension plans. Many employers will face an increase in their annual funding requirements. Some may wish to consider accelerating contributions to these plans to avoid paying increased premiums to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) as well as to avoid the need to notify participants that their plan is underfunded. All employers with defined benefit plans will need to modify the method by which they calculate lump sum distributions, both in terms of the minimum amounts they are required to pay and the maximum amounts they may pay within the limits of Section 415 of the Internal Revenue Code.

The goal of this chapter is to discuss how sociological and neuroscience research can be fruitfully synthesized to shed significant light on one the most complex problems in sociology – persistent inequality. I present a conceptual model which argues (1) persistent inequality is the result of short-sightedness in decision-making by individuals and/or collectives, as shown in sociological research; and (2) short-sightedness, in turn, is induced by uncertainty about the future. Neuroscience research shows how uncertainty can trigger neuronal processes which lead to short-sighted decisions and behaviors over time. Thus, research on uncertainty can serve as a foundational program for the development of neurosociology.

Purpose – The purpose of this chapter is to be as comprehensive as possible about what is known about mirror neurons at this time. Design/methodology/approach – This chapter offers a comprehensive critique including Churchland's hesitations about findings on mirror neurons (2011) which are balanced by Ramachandran's conviction that much of the research on mirror neurons is valid (2011). Following this is a summary of the results of the Mirror Neuron Forum (2011) wherein leading mirror neuron researchers exchange their views and conclusions about this subject. Findings – The few single cells measures that we have show that they are much wider distributed throughout the brain than we have previously imagined. It should be stressed that single measures of mirror neurons have occurred albeit in limited situations. This establishes once and for all their relevance to humans. Originality/value – The work on mirror neurons is a critical contribution from neuroscience to bringing the social brain into sociology and refining our understandings of intersubjectivity and of our biologically driven connections with others.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer and kills more people than any other malignancy. We describe the symptoms experienced in persons with lung cancer. Data on 100 consecutive patients were collected prospectively using a standard assessment tool. The median number of symptoms was nine. The most common and severe symptoms were pain (86), dyspnoea (70) and anorexia (68). There were no differences between males and females. Males aged 64 and under had higher incidences of easy fatigue, taste changes and sleep problems. Men over 64 had higher incidences of cough and >10% weight loss. Although there was a general increase in the number of symptoms as the performance status worsened, those with the poorest performance status reported the fewest symptoms. Since there is little effective treatment for most lung cancers, clinical management, research and resources should be directed by, and targeted to, palliative care.

A study of shock-induced reactions in metal-polymer mixtures via a series of gas gun experiments have been performed. Tests on a mixture of titanium and Teflon which is by weight 80% Ti and 20% Teflon and approximately 92.5% of theoretical maximum density showed reactivity at 3.48 GPa and above. PVDF gauges were used to determine the pressure at the sample/driver interface. Some of the tests were performed with a second PVDF gauge embedded further in the sample to measure reaction. Impedance matching technique was used to determine the inert Hugoniot. A series of calculations were performed to determine the calculation model which best mimics the experimentally determined Hugoniot. The results from the calculations show that an isotherm mixture model matches well the experimental results over the low and middle pressure range studied.

M&A research reveals that learning through M&As is problematic for most acquirers. Hence, we examine why acquirers are unable to learn when the target firm’s different capabilities is the motive of the acquisition. In line with calls for more process research, we study the case of P&G’s acquisition of Wella. Our research reveals that acquirer’s dominant logic and organizational culture impair acquiring managers’ ability to appropriately act on differences. Further, it suggests that, despite the initially valued differences, acquirer managers who identify with their organization consider target practices as inferior and impose the acquirer practices to a greater extent. On the other hand, acquired managers feel inferior but those who identify with their organization resist the imposition to a greater extent.
