9. Are we allowed to tinker with (human) DNA? Addressing socioscientific issues through philosophical dialogue - the case of genetic engineering

Abstract

Education about socioscientific issues (SSIs) can be challenging as underlying tensions can surface. When discussing the topic of genetic engineering, these tensions can be related to (1) the molecular biology of genetics and genetic engineering, (2) the evolutionary aspects of genetic engineering, (3) the nature of science and (4) the ethical understanding of this SSI. Such tensions may lead to confrontation, either between students or between students and teachers. The practice of ‘philosophical inquiry’ provides a pedagogical approach to help explore these tensions and engage in dialogues. Philosophical inquiry entails a dialogic approach in which a facilitator helps a group of students uncover hidden presuppositions and elicit an argumentative conversation. Stimuli such as pictures, cases or quotes provide a context to help students engage in dialogues about philosophical questions. Thus, students can reflect upon the relationship between science and evolution, the nature of science and the tensions between genetic engineering and society. In this chapter, we first explore different sensitivities related to genetic engineering. Then, we showcase learning material for secondary school students to cope with these issues. We focus on an approach to using big questions and stimulating dialogue to explore sensitivities. Ultimately, we provide tips to consider when addressing SSIs through philosophical dialogue.

12. Key recommendations on science communication in Europe relating to health and food safety

Abstract

In the autumn of 2018, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, consulted EvoKE on several science communication issues important to social wellbeing and sustainable development in Europe. These included how to change people’s attitudes toward science, scientific knowledge, and how to communicate about risk, with a special emphasis on food-related issues. Our response, based on research in education and science communication was that simply providing access to information and facts (the so-called deficit model of science communication) is not sufficient. People build their positions and attitudes based on emotional factors and then engage in motivated reasoning, looking for and/or attaching greater value to evidence and experts that support their initial attitudes. Although more studies are needed, research already provides avenues to address this problem. In this document we use the most important lessons of the research to recommend solutions that can be applied, illustrated by case studies.

Abstract

The availability of complete microbial genome sequences enormously facilitates experimental molecular investigations of the respective organisms by providing complete lists of genes, their genetic contexts, and their predicted functions. This can be used in a number of ways to focus studies on bacterial pathogenesis and also vaccine development (1,2). The complete genome sequences from two unrelated strains of Neisseria meningitidis, a derivative of isolate MC58 which originally expressed serogroup B capsule and strain Z2491, which is serogroup A, are now available (3,4). The genome sequences of both these strains were determined using the whole genome shotgun approach (5). In this approach, randomly sheared chromosomal DNA is cloned to make a small insert library (1.5-2.0 kb for MC58, 0.5-0.8 kb and 1.0-1.5 kb for Z2491), then each insert is sequenced from both ends using plasmidspecific primers. For the MC58 genome sequence, a large insert lambda library (8-24 kb) was also used. In the initial sequencing phase, 6-8 times coverage of the estimated size of the genome is generally achieved. The DNA sequences are linked together (assembled) into large contigs (a derivative of the word contiguous). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing of large insert libraries are then used to join the contigs, close gaps, and resolve ambiguities (seeref.6 for a review). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The RASSF (Ras-association domain family) has recently gained several new members and now contains ten proteins (RASSF1-10), several of which are potential tumour suppressors. The family can be split into two groups, the classical RASSF proteins (RASSF1-6) and the four recently added N-terminal RASSF proteins (RASSF7-10). The N-terminal RASSF proteins have a number of differences from the classical RASSF members and represent a newly defined set of potential Ras effectors. They have been linked to key biological processes, including cell death, proliferation, microtubule stability, promoter methylation, vesicle trafficking and response to hypoxia. Two members of the N-terminal RASSF family have also been highlighted as potential tumour suppressors. The present review will summarize what is known about the N-terminal RASSF proteins, addressing their function and possible links to cancer formation. It will also compare the N-terminal RASSF proteins with the classical RASSF proteins and ask whether the N-terminal RASSF proteins should be considered as genuine members or imposters in the RASSF family.
