Research has been conducted on the alkyl- and phenylbis(dimethylamido)gallium. The synthesis of these compounds has been carried out via the LiNMe (sub)2 reaction with (RGaCl (sub)2) (sub)2 and the results indicate that a species with the R (sub)3 Ga (sub)2(NMe (sub)2) (sub)3 formula has been produced when the compounds were heated at high temperature.

The polymeric hydrido gallium imide (HGaNH)n, or poly(imidogallane) was isolated as an intermediate in the transformation of cyclotrigallazane, (H2GaNH2)3, to gallium nitride in supercritical ammonia. Poly(imidogallane) can be transformed to nanocrystalline GaN through solid-state pyrolysis or be extended thermolysis in supercritical ammonia. The interaction of (H2GaNH2)3 and various Lewis bases leads to the isolation of (HGaNH)n and gallane-Lewis base adducts, H3Ga*base instead of the expected gallazane adducts.

Four- and five-coordinate aluminum cations are isolated from combinations of R2AlX (R = alkyl and X = halide) with a Lewis base. The reaction of one such cation, N,N',N',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine with Me2AlX (X = Cl, Br) and the catalytic activity of the resulting cationic complexes are described. All compounds are characterized by mp, IR 1H-NMR and elemental analyses and shown to be catalytically active in the living polymerization of propylene oxide.

Excess tertiary-butylamine reacts with R2AlX, where X = Br or I, to produce cationic aluminum complexes. Analyses of combinations of R2AlX.NH2tBu and (R2Al(NH2tBu)2)X with respect to varying ligand, base, and halide determine the factors affecting cation formation in organometallic aluminum complexes. Melting points, 1H NMR, IR, X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis allow characterization of the organometallic aluminum complexes.

The synthesis and characterization of cationic aluminum complexes of general formula LAlR is described. A wide range of complexes can be prepared by varying the ligand type, solvent and counteranion. Complexes formed by different combinations of L = N,N-ethylenebis(2-hydroxyphenyl methylimine); M,N'-ethylenebis(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl methylimine); N,N'-ethylenebis(2-hydroxyphenyl -1-ethylimine), solvent = H2O and MeOH, and X = Xl and BPh4, are described. Structural studies of the complexes are presented.

Ammonolysis of RGa(NMe2)2]2 led to microcrystalline powders having the general formula of [RGaNH]n. X-ray powder diffraction and crystal structure modeling established that stacks of six-membered [RGaNH]3 rings connected through axial Ga-N bonds comprised the rod cores, which were coated with a hydrocarbon shell.

A class of cationic aluminum complexes (LAl(MeOH)2)+BPh(super -)(sub 4) and (LAl(H2O)2)+Cl- (L = salen, salenCl and acen) where salen = N,N'-ethylenebis (2-hydroxyphenyleneimine), salenCl = N,N'-ethylenebis(2-hydroxy-5-chloro- phenyleneimine), and acen = N,N'-ethylenebis(2-hydroxyphenylene-(methyl) imine) are synthesized, and these aluminum cations are useful in Lewis acid catalysis. The planar ligands of the complexes allow the coordination of two solvent molecules. The central aluminum atoms have a six-coordinated distorted octahedral geometry.
