Search

Galaxy interactions and mergers are thought to play an important role in the evolution of galaxies. Studies in the nearby universe show a higher fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in interacting and merging galaxies than in their isolated counterparts, indicating that such interactions are important contributors to black hole growth. To investigate the evolution of this role at higher redshifts, we have compiled the largest known sample of major spectroscopic galaxy pairs (2381 with ΔV < 5000 km s-1) at 0.5 < z < 3.0 from observations in the COSMOS and CANDELS surveys. We identify X-ray and IR AGNs among this kinematic pair sample, a visually identified sample of mergers and interactions, and a mass-, redshift-, and environment-matched control sample for each in order to calculate AGN fractions and the level of AGN enhancement as a function of relative velocity, redshift, and X-ray luminosity. While we see a slight increase in AGN fraction with decreasing projected separation, overall, we find no significant enhancement relative to the control sample at any separation. In the closest projected separation bin (< 25 kpc, ΔV < 1000 km s-1), we find enhancements of a factor of ${0.94}_{-0.16}^{+0.21}$ and ${1.00}_{-0.31}^{+0.58}$ for X-ray and IR-selected AGNs, respectively. While we conclude that galaxy interactions do not significantly enhance AGN activity on average over 0.5 < z < 3.0 at these separations, given the errors and the small sample size at the closest projected separations, our results would be consistent with the presence of low-level AGN enhancement....

Galaxy mergers are expected to have a significant role in the mass assembly of galaxies in the early Universe, but there are very few observational constraints on the merger history of galaxies at $z>2$. We present the first study of galaxy major mergers (mass ratios $>$ 1:4) in mass-selected samples out to $z\approx6$. Using all five fields of the HST/CANDELS survey and a probabilistic pair count methodology that incorporates the full photometric redshift posteriors and corrections for stellar mass completeness, we measure galaxy pair-counts for projected separations between 5 and 30 kpc in stellar mass selected samples at $9.7 < \log_{10}(\rm{M}_{*}/\rm{M}_{\odot}) < 10.3$ and $\log_{10}(\rm{M}_{*}/\rm{M}_{\odot}) > 10.3$. We find that the major merger pair fraction rises with redshift to $z\approx6$ proportional to $(1+z)^{m}$, with $m = 0.8\pm0.2$ ($m = 1.8\pm0.2$) for $\log_{10}(\rm{M}_{*} / \rm{M}_{\odot}) > 10.3$ ($9.7 < \log_{10}(\rm{M}_{*}/\rm{M}_{\odot}) < 10.3$). Investigating the pair fraction as a function of mass ratio between 1:20 and 1:1, we find no evidence for a strong evolution in the relative numbers of minor to major mergers out to $z 10.3$. The corresponding co-moving major merger rate density remains roughly constant during this time, with rates of $��\approx 10^{-4}$ Gyr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Based on the observed merger rates per galaxy, we infer specific mass accretion rates from major mergers that are comparable to the specific star-formation rates for the same mass galaxies at $z>3$ - observational evidence that mergers are as important a mechanism for building up mass at high redshift as in-situ star-formation., 36 pages, 17 figures. We present a WFC3 F160W ($H$-band) selected catalog in the CANDELS/GOODS-N field containing photometry from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (IR), photometric redshifts and stellar parameters derived from the analysis of the multi-wavelength data. The catalog contains 35,445 sources over the 171 arcmin$^{2}$ of the CANDELS F160W mosaic. The 5$\sigma$ detection limits (within an aperture of radius 0\farcs17) of the mosaic range between $H=27.8$, 28.2 and 28.7 in the wide, intermediate and deep regions, that span approximately 50\%, 15\% and 35\% of the total area. The multi-wavelength photometry includes broad-band data from UV (U band from KPNO and LBC), optical (HST/ACS F435W, F606W, F775W, F814W, and F850LP), near-to-mid IR (HST/WFC3 F105W, F125W, F140W and F160W, Subaru/MOIRCS Ks, CFHT/Megacam K, and \spitzer/IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 $\mu$m) and far IR (\spitzer/MIPS 24$\mu$m, HERSCHEL/PACS 100 and 160$\mu$m, SPIRE 250, 350 and 500$\mu$m) observations. In addition, the catalog also includes optical medium-band data (R$\sim50$) in 25 consecutive bands, $\lambda=500$ to 950~nm, from the SHARDS survey and WFC3 IR spectroscopic observations with the G102 and G141 grisms (R$\sim210$ and 130). The use of higher spectral resolution data to estimate photometric redshifts provides very high, and nearly uniform, precision from $z=0-2.5$. The comparison to 1,485 good quality spectroscopic redshifts up to $z\sim3$ yields $\Delta z$/(1+$z_{\rm spec}$)$=$0.0032 and an outlier fraction of $\eta=$4.3\%. While major mergers have long been proposed as a driver of both AGN activity and the M-sigma relation, studies of moderate to high redshift Seyfert-luminosity AGN hosts have found little evidence for enhanced rates of interactions. However, both theory and observation suggest that while these AGN may be fueled by stochastic accretion and secular processes, high-luminosity, high-redshift, and heavily obscured AGN are the AGN most likely to be merger-driven. To better sample this population of AGN, we turn to infrared selection in the CANDELS/COSMOS field. Compared to their lower-luminosity and less obscured X-ray-only counterparts, IR-only AGN (luminous, heavily obscured AGN) are more likely to be classified as either irregular (50$^{+12}_{-12}$% vs. 9$^{+5}_{-2}$%) or asymmetric (69$^{+9}_{-13}$% vs. 17$^{+6}_{-4}$%) and are less likely to have a spheroidal component (31$^{+13}_{-9}$% vs. 77$^{+4}_{-6}$%). Furthermore, IR-only AGN are also significantly more likely than X-ray-only AGN (75$^{+8}_{-13}$% vs. 31$^{+6}_{-6}$%) to be classified either as interacting or merging in a way that significantly disturbs the host galaxy or disturbed though not clearly interacting or merging, which potentially represents the late stages of a major merger. This suggests that while major mergers may not contribute significantly to the fueling of Seyfert luminosity AGN, interactions appear to play a more dominant role in the triggering and fueling of high-luminosity heavily obscured AGN., 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a 0.4-8$\mu$m multi-wavelength photometric catalog in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) field. This catalog is built on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 and ACS data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS), and it incorporates the existing HST data from the All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey (AEGIS) and the 3D-HST program. The catalog is based on detections in the F160W band reaching a depth of F160W=26.62 AB (90% completeness, point-sources). It includes the photometry for 41457 objects over an area of $\approx 206$ arcmin$^2$ in the following bands: HST ACS F606W and F814W; HST WFC3 F125W, F140W and F160W; CFHT/Megacam $u^*$, $g'$, $r'$, $i'$ and $z'$; CFHT/WIRCAM $J$, $H$ and $K_\mathrm{S}$; Mayall/NEWFIRM $J1$, $J2$, $J3$, $H1$, $H2$, $K$; Spitzer IRAC $3.6\mu$m, $4.5\mu$m, $5.8\mu$m and $8.0\mu$m. We are also releasing value-added catalogs that provide robust photometric redshifts and stellar mass measurements. We present a multi-wavelength photometric catalog in the COSMOS field as part of the observations by the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The catalog is based on Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) observations of the COSMOS field (centered at RA: $10^h00^m28^s$, Dec:$+02^{\circ}12^{\prime}21^{\prime\prime}$). The final catalog has 38671 sources with photometric data in forty two bands from UV to the infrared ($\rm \sim 0.3-8\,\mu m$). This includes broad-band photometry from the HST, CFHT, Subaru, VISTA and Spitzer Space Telescope in the visible, near infrared and infrared bands along with intermediate and narrow-band photometry from Subaru and medium band data from Mayall NEWFIRM. Source detection was conducted in the WFC3 F160W band (at $\rm 1.6\,\mu m$) and photometry is generated using the Template FITting algorithm. We further present a catalog of the physical properties of sources as identified in the HST F160W band and measured from the multi-band photometry by fitting the observed spectral energy distributions of sources against templates., Comment: 28 Pages, 22 Figures and 10 Tables. We examine the fraction of massive ($M_{*}>10^{10} M_{\odot}$), compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) that host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at $z\sim2$. These cSFGs are likely the direct progenitors of the compact quiescent galaxies observed at this epoch, which are the first population of passive galaxies to appear in large numbers in the early Universe. We identify cSFGs that host an AGN using a combination of Hubble WFC3 imaging and Chandra X-ray observations in four fields: the Chandra Deep Fields, the Extended Groth Strip, and the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field. We find that $39.2^{+3.9}_{-3.6}$\% (65/166) of cSFGs at $1.4, Comment: Published in the Astrophysical Journal

We derive physical properties of 10 submillimeter galaxies located in the CANDELS coverage of the GOODS-S field. The galaxies were first identified as submillimeter sources with the LABOCA bolometer and subsequently targeted for 870um continuum observation with ALMA. The high angular resolution of the ALMA imaging allows secure counterparts to be identified in the CANDELS multiband dataset. The CANDELS data provide deep photometric data from UV through near-infrared wavelengths. Using synthetic spectral energy distributions, we derive photometric redshifts, stellar masses, extinction, ages, and the star formation history. The redshift range is z=1.65-4.76, with two of the galaxies located at z>4. Two SMG counterparts have stellar masses 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than the rest. The remaining SMG counterparts have stellar masses around 1x10^11 Msun. The stellar population in the SMGs is typically older than the expected duration of the submillimeter phase, suggesting that the star formation history of submillimeter galaxies is more complex than a single burst. Non-parametric morphology indices suggest that the SMG counterparts are among the most asymmetric systems compared with galaxies of the same stellar mass and redshift. The HST images shows that 3 of the SMGs are associated with on-going mergers. The remaining counterparts are isolated. Estimating the dust and molecular gas mass from the submm fluxes, and comparing with our stellar masses shows that the molecular gas mass fraction of SMGs is ~28% and that the final stellar mass is likely to be (1-2)x10^11 Msun., 51 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables; Submitted to ApJ

We have selected a sample of X-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low-mass host galaxies (5e9-2e10 Msun) out to z~1. By comparing to AGNs in more massive hosts, we have found that the AGN spatial number density and the fraction of galaxies hosting AGNs depends strongly on the host mass, with the AGN host mass function peaking at intermediate mass and with the AGN fraction increasing with host mass. AGNs in low-mass hosts show strong cosmic evolution in comoving number density, the fraction of such galaxies hosting active nuclei and the comoving X-ray energy density. The integrated X-ray luminosity function is used to estimate the amount of the accreted black hole mass in these AGNs and places a strong lower limit of 12% to the fraction of local low-mass galaxies hosting black holes, though a more likely value is probably much higher (> 50%) once the heavily-obscured objects missed in current X-ray surveys are accounted for.

HIZOA J0836-43 is an extreme gas-rich ($M_{\rm{HI}}$=7.5$\times10^{10} M_{\sun}$) disk galaxy which lies hidden behind the strongly obscuring Vela region of the Milky Way. Utilizing observations from the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}, we have found it to be a luminous infrared starburst galaxy with a star formation rate of $\sim 21 M_{\sun} \rm{yr^{-1}}$, arising from exceptionally strong molecular PAH emission ($L_{7.7\micron} = 1.50 \times 10^{9} L_{\odot}$) and far-infrared emission from cold dust. The galaxy exhibits a weak mid-infrared continuum compared to other starforming galaxies and U/LIRGs. This relative lack of emission from small grains suggests atypical interstellar medium conditions compared to other starbursts. We do not detect significant $[$Ne {\sc v}$]$ or $[$O {\sc iv}$]$, which implies an absent or very weak AGN. The galaxy possesses a prominent bulge of evolved stars and a stellar mass of 4.4($\pm$1.4)$\times10^{10} M_{\sun}$. With its plentiful gas supply and current star formation rate, a doubling of stellar mass would occur on a timescale of $\sim$2 Gyr. Compared to local galaxies, HIZOA J0836-43 appears to be a "scaled-up" spiral undergoing inside-out formation, possibly resembling stellar disk building processes at intermediate redshifts.

We study the relationship between the structure and star-formation rate (SFR) of X-ray selected low and moderate luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the two Chandra Deep Fields, using Hubble Space Telescope imaging from the Cosmic Assembly Near Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and deep far-infrared maps from the PEP+GOODS-Herschel survey. We derive detailed distributions of structural parameters and FIR luminosities from carefully constructed control samples of galaxies, which we then compare to those of the AGNs. At z~1, AGNs show slightly diskier light profiles than massive inactive (non-AGN) galaxies, as well as modestly higher levels of gross galaxy disturbance (as measured by visual signatures of interactions and clumpy structure). In contrast, at z~2, AGNs show similar levels of galaxy disturbance as inactive galaxies, but display a red central light enhancement, which may arise due to a more pronounced bulge in AGN hosts or due to extinguished nuclear light. We undertake a number of tests of these alternatives, but our results do not strongly favour one interpretation over the other. We investigate why half of X-ray--selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in deep surveys lack signs of accretion in their optical spectra. The majority of these ``optically--dull'' AGN are no more than 6 times fainter than their host galaxies in rest-frame R-band; as such, AGN lines are unlikely to be overwhelmed by stellar continuum in at least half the sample. We find that optically--dull AGN have the mid--infrared emission and L(x)/L(IR) ratios characteristic of local Seyferts, suggesting that the cause of optical dullness is not missing UV--optical continua. We report the discovery of a very HI-massive disk galaxy, HIZOA J0836-43, at a velocity of v_hel = 10689 km/s, corresponding to a distance of 148 Mpc (assuming H_0=75 km/s/Mpc). It was found during the course of a systematic HI survey of the southern Zone of Avoidance (|b| < 5 deg) with the multibeam system at the 64m Parkes radio telescope. Follow-up observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) reveal an extended HI disk. We derive an HI mass of 7.5 x 10^10 Msun. Using the HI radius, we estimate a total dynamical mass of 1.4 x 10^12 Msun, similar to the most massive known disk galaxies such as Malin 1. HIZOA J0836-43 lies deep in the Zone of Avoidance (l, b = 262.48 deg, -1.64 deg) where the optical extinction is very high, A_B = 9.8. However, in the near-infrared wavebands, where the extinction is considerably lower, HIZOA J0836-43 is clearly detected by both DENIS and 2MASS. Deep AAT near-infrared (Ks and H-band) images show that HIZOA J0836-43 is an inclined disk galaxy with a prominent bulge (scale length 2.5 arcsec or 1.7 kpc), and an extended disk (scale length 7 arcsec or 4.7 kpc) which can be traced along the major axis out to a radius of 20 arcsec or 13.4 kpc (at 20 mag/arcsec^2 in Ks). The HI disk is much more extended, having a radius of 66 kpc at 1 Msun/pc^2. Detections in the radio continuum at 1.4 GHz and at 60 micron (IRAS) are consistent with HIZOA J0836-43 forming stars at a rate of ~35 Msun/yr. We compare the properties of HIZOA J0836-43 with those of the most HI-massive galaxies currently known, UGC 4288, UGC 1752 and Malin 1, all of which are classified as giant low surface brightness galaxies.

We present the discovery of seven quasars at z>5.7, selected from ~2000 deg^2 of multicolor imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The new quasars have redshifts z from 5.79 to 6.13. Five are selected as part of a complete flux-limited sample in the SDSS Northern Galactic Cap; two have larger photometric errors and are not part of the complete sample. One of the new quasars, SDSS J1335+3533 (z=5.93), exhibits no emission lines; the 3-sigma limit on the rest-frame equivalent width of Ly alpha+NV line is 5 A. It is the highest redshift lineless quasar known, and could be a gravitational lensed galaxy, a BL Lac object or a new type of quasar. Two new z>6 quasars, SDSS 1250+3130 (z=6.13) and SDSS J1137+3549 (z=6.01), show deep Gunn-Peterson absorption gaps in Ly alpha. These gaps are narrower the complete Gunn-Peterson absorption troughs observed among quasars at z>6.2 and do not have complete Ly beta absorption., Comment: AJ in press, 16 pages, 3 figures

We define a sample of 27 radio-excess AGN in the Chandra Deep Field North by selecting galaxies that do not obey the radio/infrared correlation for radio-quiet AGN and star-forming galaxies. Approximately 60% of these radio-excess AGN are X-ray undetected in the 2 Ms Chandra catalog, even at exposures of > 1 Ms; 25% lack even 2-sigma X-ray detections. The absorbing columns to the faint X-ray-detected objects are 10^22 cm^-2 < N_H < 10^24 cm^-2, i.e., they are obscured but unlikely to be Compton thick. Using a local sample of radio-selected AGN, we show that a low ratio of X-ray to radio emission, as seen in the X-ray weakly- and non-detected samples, is correlated with the viewing angle of the central engine, and therefore with obscuration. Our technique can explore the proportion of obscured AGN in the distant Universe; the results reported here for radio-excess objects are consistent with but at the low end of the overall theoretical predictions for Compton-thick objects.

Optically--faint X-ray sources (those with f_X/f_R > 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically--faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4--24 um photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17 of these 20 sources. We find that these AGN are optically--faint both because they lie at significantly higher redshifts (median z ~ 1.6) than most X-ray--selected AGN, and because their spectra are much redder than standard AGN. They have 2--8 keV X-ray luminosities in the Seyfert range, unlike the QSO--luminosities of optically--faint AGN found in shallow, wide--field surveys. Their contribution to the X-ray Seyfert luminosity function is comparable to that of z>1 optically--bright AGN.

We present photometric redshifts and associated probability distributions for all detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). The work makes use of the most up-to-date data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and the Taiwan ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey (TENIS) in addition to other data. We also revisit multi-wavelength counterparts for published X-ray sources from the 4Ms-CDFS and 250ks-ECDFS surveys, finding reliable counterparts for 1207 out of 1259 sources ($\sim 96\%$). Data used for photometric redshifts include intermediate-band photometry deblended using the TFIT method, which is used for the first time in this work. Photometric redshifts for X-ray source counterparts are based on a new library of AGN/galaxy hybrid templates appropriate for the faint X-ray population in the CDFS. Photometric redshift accuracy for normal galaxies is 0.010 and for X-ray sources is 0.014, and outlier fractions are $4\%$ and $5.4\%$ respectively. The results within the CANDELS coverage area are even better as demonstrated both by spectroscopic comparison and by galaxy-pair statistics. Intermediate-band photometry, even if shallow, is valuable when combined with deep broad-band photometry. AGN are known to have complex X-ray spectra that depend on both the properties of the accreting SMBH (e.g. mass, accretion rate) and the distribution of obscuring material in its vicinity ("torus"). Often however, simple and even unphysical models are adopted to represent the X-ray spectra of AGN. In the case of blank field surveys in particular, this should have an impact on e.g. the determination of the AGN luminosity function, the inferred accretion history of the Universe and also on our understanding of the relation between AGN and their host galaxies. We develop a Bayesian framework for model comparison and parameter estimation of X-ray spectra. We take into account uncertainties associated with X-ray data and photometric redshifts. We also demonstrate how Bayesian model comparison can be used to select among ten different physically motivated X-ray spectral models the one that provides a better representation of the observations. Despite the use of low-count spectra, our methodology is able to draw strong inferences on the geometry of the torus. For a sample of 350 AGN in the 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field South field, our analysis identifies four components needed to represent the diversity of the observed X-ray spectra: (abridged). Simpler models are ruled out with decisive evidence in favour of a geometrically extended structure with significant Compton scattering. Regarding the geometry of the obscurer, there is strong evidence against both a completely closed or entirely open toroidal geometry, in favour of an intermediate case. The additional Compton reflection required by data over that predicted by toroidal geometry models, may be a sign of a density gradient in the torus or reflection off the accretion disk. We analyse 14 LBGs at z~2.8-3.8 constituting the only sample where both a spectroscopic measurement of their metallicity and deep IR observations (CANDELS+HUGS survey) are available. Fixing the metallicity of population synthesis models to the observed values, we determine best-fit physical parameters under different assumptions about the star-formation history and also consider the effect of nebular emission. For comparison we determine the UV slope of the objects, and use it to estimate their SFR_UV99 by correcting the UV luminosity following Meurer et al. (1999). A comparison between SFR obtained through SED-fitting (SFR_fit) and the SFR_UV99 shows that the latter are underestimated by a factor 2-10, regardless of the assumed SFH. Other SFR indicators (radio, far-IR, X-ray, recombination lines) coherently indicate SFRs a factor of 2-4 larger than SFR_UV99 and in closer agreement with SFR_fit. This discrepancy is due to the solar metallicity implied by the usual beta-A1600 conversion factor. We propose a refined relation, appropriate for sub-solar metallicity LBGs: A1600 = 5.32+1.99beta. This relation reconciles the dust-corrected UV with the SED-fitting and the other SFR indicators. We show that the fact that z~3 galaxies have sub-solar metallicity implies an upward revision by a factor of ~1.5-2 of the global SFRD, depending on the assumptions about the age of the stellar populations. We find very young best-fit ages (10-500 Myrs) for all our objects. From a careful examination of the uncertainties in the fit and the amplitude of the Balmer break we conclude that there is little evidence of the presence of old stellar population in at least half of the LBGs in our sample, suggesting that these objects are probably caught during a huge star-formation burst, rather than being the result of a smooth evolution., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, A&A in press. We present the multiwavelength - ultraviolet to mid-infrared - catalog of the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) field observed as part of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). Based on publicly available data, the catalog includes: the CANDELS data from the Hubble Space Telescope (near-infrared WFC3 F125W and F160W data and visible ACS F606W and F814W data), u-band data from CFHT/Megacam, B, V, Rc, i' and z' band data from Subaru/Suprime-Cam, Y and Ks band data from VLT/HAWK-I, J, H and K bands data from UKIDSS (Data Release 8), and Spitzer/IRAC data (3.6, 4.5 from SEDS, 5.8 and 8.0um from SpUDS). Pérez-González et al., We present the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS), an ESO/GTC Large Program carried out using the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). SHARDS is an ultra-deep optical spectro-photometric survey of the GOODS-N field covering 130 arcmin2 at wavelengths between 500 and 950 nm with 24 contiguous medium-band filters (providing a spectral resolution R ∿ 50). The data reach an AB magnitude of 26.5 (at least at a 3σ level) with sub-arcsec seeing in all bands. SHARDS' main goal is to obtain accurate physical properties of intermediate- and high-z galaxies using well-sampled optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with sufficient spectral resolution to measure absorption and emission features, whose analysis will provide reliable stellar population and active galactic nucleus (AGN) parameters. Among the different populations of high-z galaxies, SHARDS' principal targets are massive quiescent galaxies at z > 1, whose existence is one of the major challenges facing current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. In this paper, we outline the observational strategy and include a detailed discussion of the special reduction and calibration procedures which should be applied to the GTC/OSIRIS data. An assessment of the SHARDS data quality is also performed. We present science demonstration results on the detection and study of emission-line galaxies (star-forming objects and AGNs) at z = 0-5. We also analyze the SEDs for a sample of 27 quiescent massive galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.0 < z ≲ 1.4. We discuss the improvements introduced by the SHARDS data set in the analysis of their star formation history and stellar properties. We discuss the systematics arising from the use of different stellar population libraries, typical in this kind of study. Averaging the results from the different libraries, we find that the UV-to-MIR SEDs of the massive quiescent galaxies at z = 1.0-1.4 are well described by an exponentially decaying star formation history with scale Ï„ = 100-200 Myr, age around 1.5-2.0 Gyr, solar or slightly sub-solar metallicity, and moderate extinction, A(V) ∿ 0.5 mag. We also find that galaxies with masses above M* are typically older than lighter galaxies, as expected in a downsizing scenario of galaxy formation. This trend is, however, model dependent, i.e., it is significantly more evident in the results obtained with some stellar population synthesis libraries, and almost absent in others. © 2013. We present a UV-to-mid infrared multi-wavelength catalog in the CANDELS/GOODS-S field, combining the newly obtained CANDELS HST/WFC3 F105W, F125W, and F160W data with existing public data. The catalog is based on source detection in the WFC3 F160W band. The F160W mosaic includes the data from CANDELS deep and wide observations as well as previous ERS and HUDF09 programs. The mosaic reaches a 5$\sigma$ limiting depth (within an aperture of radius 0.17 arcsec) of 27.4, 28.2, and 29.7 AB for CANDELS wide, deep, and HUDF regions, respectively. The catalog contains 34930 sources with the representative 50% completeness reaching 25.9, 26.6, and 28.1 AB in the F160W band for the three regions. In addition to WFC3 bands, the catalog also includes data from UV (U-band from both CTIO/MOSAIC and VLT/VIMOS), optical (HST/ACS F435W, F606W, F775W, F814W, and F850LP), and infrared (HST/WFC3 F098M, VLT/ISAAC Ks, VLT/HAWK-I Ks, and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 $\mu$m) observations. The catalog is validated via stellar colors, comparison with other published catalogs, zeropoint offsets determined from the best-fit templates of the spectral energy distribution of spectroscopically observed objects, and the accuracy of photometric redshifts. The catalog is able to detect unreddened star-forming (passive) galaxies with stellar mass of 10^{10}M_\odot at a 50% completeness level to z$\sim$3.4 (2.8), 4.6 (3.2), and 7.0 (4.2) in the three regions. As an example of application, the catalog is used to select both star-forming and passive galaxies at z$\sim$2--4 via the Balmer break. Spitzer/IRAC selection is a powerful tool for identifying luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). For deep IRAC data, however, the AGN selection wedges currently in use are heavily contaminated by star-forming galaxies, especially at high redshift. Using the large samples of luminous AGNs and high-redshift star-forming galaxies in COSMOS, we redefine the AGN selection criteria for use in deep IRAC surveys. The new IRAC criteria are designed to be both highly complete and reliable, and incorporate the best aspects of the current AGN selection wedges and of infrared power-law selection while excluding high-redshift star-forming galaxies selected via the BzK, distant red galaxy, Lyman-break galaxy, and submillimeter galaxy criteria. At QSO luminosities of log L 2-10 keV(erg s-1) >=44, the new IRAC criteria recover 75% of the hard X-ray and IRAC-detected XMM-COSMOS sample, yet only 38% of the IRAC AGN candidates have X-ray counterparts, a fraction that rises to 52% in regions with Chandra exposures of 50-160 ks. X-ray stacking of the individually X-ray non-detected AGN candidates leads to a hard X-ray signal indicative of heavily obscured to mildly Compton-thick obscuration (log N H (cm-2) = 23.5 ± 0.4). While IRAC selection recovers a substantial fraction of luminous unobscured and obscured AGNs, it is incomplete to low-luminosity and host-dominated AGNs.

We have analysed a sample of 25 extremely red H-[4.5]>4 galaxies, selected using 4.5 micron data from the Spitzer SEDS survey and deep H-band data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CANDELS survey, over ~180 square arcmin of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. Our aim is to investigate the nature of this rare population of mid-infrared (mid-IR) sources that display such extreme near-to-mid-IR colours. Using up to 17-band photometry (U through 8.0 microns), we have studied in detail their spectral energy distributions, including possible degeneracies in the photometric redshift/internal extinction (zphot-Av) plane. Our sample appears to include sources of very different nature. Using HST/WFC3 imaging taken as part of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS), we examine the role that major galaxy mergers play in triggering active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity at z~2. The Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) is designed to document the first third of galactic evolution, over the approximate redshift (z) range 8--1.5. It will image >250,000 distant galaxies using three separate cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope, from the mid-ultraviolet to the near-infrared, and will find and measure Type Ia supernovae at z>1.5 to test their accuracy as standardizable candles for cosmology. Five premier multi-wavelength sky regions are selected, each with extensive ancillary data. The use of five widely separated fields mitigates cosmic variance and yields statistically robust and complete samples of galaxies down to a stellar mass of 10^9 M_\odot to z \approx 2, reaching the knee of the ultraviolet luminosity function (UVLF) of galaxies to z \approx 8. The survey covers approximately 800 arcmin^2 and is divided into two parts. The CANDELS/Deep survey (5\sigma\ point-source limit H=27.7 mag) covers \sim 125 arcmin^2 within GOODS-N and GOODS-S. The CANDELS/Wide survey includes GOODS and three additional fields (EGS, COSMOS, and UDS) and covers the full area to a 5\sigma\ point-source limit of H \gtrsim 27.0 mag. Together with the Hubble Ultra Deep Fields, the strategy creates a three-tiered "wedding cake" approach that has proven efficient for extragalactic surveys. Data from the survey are nonproprietary and are useful for a wide variety of science investigations. In this paper, we describe the basic motivations for the survey, the CANDELS team science goals and the resulting observational requirements, the field selection and geometry, and the observing design. We use multi-band spatially resolved photometry from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Legacy Survey (CANDELS) in the 4 MSec Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) to explore the nuclear and extended colors, color gradients and stellar populations of X-ray selected AGN host galaxies out to z=3. Based on a study of their central light, we develop X-ray based criteria to exclude objects with strong AGN contamination. We use stellar masses from the FIREWORKS database to understand and account for stellar mass selection effects, and carefully study, for the first time, the resolved host galaxy properties of AGNs at z~2 in their rest-frame optical light without substantial nuclear contamination. AGN hosts span a sizable range of stellar masses, colors and color gradients at these redshifts. Their colors, color gradients and stellar population properties are very similar to inactive galaxies of the same stellar mass. At z~1, we find a slightly narrower range in host colors compared to inactive galaxies, as well as hints of more recent star-formation. These differences are weaker or non-existent among AGN hosts at z~2. We discuss the importance of AGN driven feedback in the quenching of galaxies at z>~1 and speculate on possible evolution in the relationship between black hole accretion and the host galaxy towards high redshifts., 20 pages, 14 figures

We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 slitless grism spectroscopy of 28 emission-line galaxies at z~2, in the GOODS-S region of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The high sensitivity of these grism observations, with 1-sigma detections of emission lines to f > 2.5x10^{-18} erg/s/cm^2, means that the galaxies in the sample are typically ~7 times less massive (median M_* = 10^{9.5} M_sun) than previously studied z~2 emission-line galaxies. Despite their lower mass, the galaxies have OIII/Hb ratios which are very similar to previously studied z~2 galaxies and much higher than the typical emission-line ratios of local galaxies. The WFC3 grism allows for unique studies of spatial gradients in emission lines, and we stack the two-dimensional spectra of the galaxies for this purpose. In the stacked data the OIII emission line is more spatially concentrated than the Hb emission line with 98.1 confidence. We additionally stack the X-ray data (all sources are individually undetected), and find that the average L(OIII)/L(0.5-10 keV) ratio is intermediate between typical z~0 obscured active galaxies and star-forming galaxies. Together the compactness of the stacked OIII spatial profile and the stacked X-ray data suggest that at least some of these low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies harbor weak active galactic nuclei., ApJ accepted. 8 pages, 6 figures

Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with intrinsically weak broad emission lines (BELs) would be exceptions to the unified model. After examining a number of proposed candidates critically, we find that the sample is contaminated significantly by objects with BELs of strengths indicating that they actually contain intermediate-type AGNs, plus a few Compton-thick sources as revealed by extremely low ratios of X-ray to nuclear IR luminosities. We develop quantitative metrics that show two (NGC 3147 and NGC 4594) of the remaining candidates to have BELs 2-3 orders of magnitude weaker than those of typical type 1 AGNs. Several more galaxies remain as candidates to have anomalously weak BELs, but this status cannot be confirmed with the existing information. Although the parent sample is poorly defined, the two confirmed objects are well under 1% of its total number of members, showing that the absence of a BEL is possible, but very uncommon in AGN. We evaluate these two objects in detail using multi-wavelength measurements including new IR data obtained with Spitzer and ground-based optical spectropolarimeteric observations. They have little X-ray extinction with N_H < ~10^(21) cm^(–2). Their IR spectra show strong silicate emission (NGC 4594) or weak aromatic features on a generally power-law continuum with a suggestion of silicates in emission (NGC 3147). No polarized BEL is detected in NGC 3147. These results indicate that the two unobscured type 2 objects have circumnuclear tori that are approximately face-on. Combined with their X-ray and optical/UV properties, this behavior implies that we have an unobscured view of the nuclei and thus that they have intrinsically weak BELs. We compare their properties with those of the other less-extreme candidates. We then compare the distributions of bolometric luminosities and accretion rates of these objects with theoretical models that predict weak BELs.

We present the latest results of the Spitzer Cosmological Surveys concerning the characterization of the evolution of galaxies in the last 12Gyr (from z=4). We have analyzed the stellar mass function up to z=4 using a sample of more than 28,000 galaxies selected in the rest-frame near-infrared with Spitzer/IRAC. Our results confirm and quantify the downsizing scenario of galaxy formation. Based on the study of the specific Star Formation Rates (SFRs) of X-ray emitters, we discuss the role of AGN in the evolution of galaxies, arguing against the link between nuclear activity and the quenching of the star formation in massive galaxies at z

We present the AGN, star-forming, and morphological properties of a sample of 13 MIR-luminous (f(24) > 700uJy) IR-bright/optically-faint galaxies (IRBGs, f(24)/f(R) > 1000). While these z~2 sources were drawn from deep Chandra fields with >200 ks X-ray coverage, only 7 are formally detected in the X-ray and four lack X-ray emission at even the 2 sigma level. Spitzer IRS spectra, however, confirm that all of the sources are AGN-dominated in the mid-IR, although half have detectable PAH emission responsible for ~25% of their mid-infrared flux density. When combined with other samples, this indicates that at least 30-40% of luminous IRBGs have star-formation rates in the ULIRG range (~100-2000 Msun/yr). X-ray hardness ratios and MIR to X-ray luminosity ratios indicate that all members of the sample contain heavily X-ray obscured AGN, 80% of which are candidates to be Compton-thick. Furthermore, the mean X-ray luminosity of the sample, log L(2-10 keV)(ergs/s)=44.6, indicates that these IRBGs are Type 2 QSOs, at least from the X-ray perspective. While those sources most heavily obscured in the X-ray are also those most likely to display strong silicate absorption in the mid-IR, silicate absorption does not always accompany X-ray obscuration. Finally, ~70% of the IRBGs are merger candidates, a rate consistent with that of sub-mm galaxies (SMGs), although SMGs appear to be physically larger than IRBGs. These characteristics are consistent with the proposal that these objects represent a later, AGN-dominated, and more relaxed evolutionary stage following soon after the star-formation-dominated one represented by the SMGs., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

36 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, 1 appendix.-- Pre-print archive., We show that measures of star formation rates (SFRs) for infrared galaxies using either single-band 24 um or extinction-corrected Paschen-alpha luminosities are consistent in the total infrared luminosity = L(TIR) ~ 10^10 L_sun range. MIPS 24 micron photometry can yield star formation rates accurately from this luminosity upward: SFR(M_sun/yr) = 7.8 x 10^-10 L(24 um, L_sun) from L(TIR) = 5 x 10^9 L_sun to 10^11 L_sun, and SFR = 7.8 x 10^-10 L(24 um, L_sun) x (7.76 x 10^-11 L(24))^0.048 for higher L(TIR). For galaxies with L(TIR) >= 10^10 L_sun, these new expressions should provide SFRs to within 0.2 dex. For L(TIR) >= 10^11 L_sun, we find that the SFR of infrared galaxies is significantly underestimated using extinction-corrected Pa-alpha (and presumably using any other optical or near infrared recombination lines). As a part of this work, we constructed spectral energy distribution (SED) templates for eleven luminous and ultraluminous purely star forming infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) and over the spectral range 0.4 microns to 30 cm. We use these templates and the SINGS data to construct average templates from 5 microns to 30 cm for infrared galaxies with L(TIR) = 5 x 10^9 to 10^13 L_sun. (abridged) Infrared selection is a potentially powerful way to identify heavily obscured AGN missed in even the deepest X-ray surveys. Using a 24 micron-selected sample in GOODS-S, we test the reliability and completeness of three infrared AGN selection methods: (1) IRAC color-color selection, (2) IRAC power-law selection, and (3) IR-excess selection; we also evaluate a number of infrared excess approaches. We find that the vast majority of non-power-law IRAC color-selected AGN candidates in GOODS-S have colors consistent with those of star-forming galaxies. Contamination by star-forming galaxies is most prevalent at low 24 micron flux densities (~100 uJy) and high redshifts (z~2), but the fraction of potential contaminants is still high (~50%) at 500 uJy, the highest flux density probed reliably by our survey. AGN candidates selected via a simple, physically-motivated power-law criterion (PLGs), however, appear to be reliable. We confirm that the infrared excess methods successfully identify a number of AGN, but we also find that such samples may be significantly contaminated by star-forming galaxies. Adding only the secure Spitzer-selected PLG, color-selected, IR-excess, and radio/IR-selected AGN candidates to the deepest X-ray-selected AGN samples directly increases the number of known X-ray AGN (84) by 54-77%, and implies an increase to the number of 24 micron-detected AGN of 71-94%. Finally, we show that the fraction of MIR sources dominated by an AGN decreases with decreasing MIR flux density, but only down to f_24 = 300 uJy. Below this limit, the AGN fraction levels out, indicating that a non-negligible fraction (~10%) of faint 24 micron sources (the majority of which are missed in the X-ray) are powered not by star formation, but by the central engine., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 26 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Summary. We summarize multiwavelength properties of a sample of galaxies in the CDF-N and CDF-S whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) exhibit the characteristic power-law behavior expected for AGN in the Spitzer/IRAC 3.6−8 µm bands. AGN selected this way tend to comprise the majority of high x-ray luminosity AGN, whereas AGN selected via other IRAC color–color criteria might contain more starformation dominated galaxies. Approximately half of these IR power-law galaxies in the CDF-S are detected in deep (1 Ms) Chandra x-ray imaging, although in the CDF-N (2 Ms) about 77% are detected at the 3 σ level. The SEDs and x-ray upper limits of the sources not detected in x-rays are consistent with those of obscured AGN, and are significantly different from those of massive star-forming galaxies. About 40% of IR power-law galaxies detected in x-rays have SEDs resembling that of an optical QSO and morphologies dominated by bright point source emission. The remaining 60% have SEDs whose UV and optical continuum are much steeper (obscured) and more extended morphologies than those detected in x-rays. Most of the IR power-law galaxies not detected in x-rays have IR (8−1000 µm) above 10 12 L� , and x-ray (upper limits) to mid-IR ratios similar to those of local warm (i.e. hosting an AGN) ULIRGs. The SED shapes of power-law galaxies are consistent with the obscured fraction (4:1) as derived from the x-ray column densities, if we assume that all the sources not detected in x-rays are heavily absorbed. IR power-law galaxies may account for between 20% and 50% of the predicted number density of mid-IR detected obscured AGN. The remaining obscured AGN probably have rest-frame SEDs dominated by stellar emission.

We define a sample of 62 galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field-North whose Spitzer IRAC SEDs exhibit the characteristic power-law emission expected of luminous AGN. We study the multiwavelength properties of this sample, and compare the AGN selected in this way to those selected via other Spitzer color-color criteria. Only 55% of the power-law galaxies are detected in the X-ray catalog at exposures of >0.5 Ms, although a search for faint emission results in the detection of 85% of the power-law galaxies at the > 2.5 sigma detection level. Most of the remaining galaxies are likely to host AGN that are heavily obscured in the X-ray. Because the power-law selection requires the AGN to be energetically dominant in the near- and mid-infrared, the power-law galaxies comprise a significant fraction of the Spitzer-detected AGN population at high luminosities and redshifts. The high 24 micron detection fraction also points to a luminous population. The power-law galaxies comprise a subset of color-selected AGN candidates. A comparison with various mid-infrared color selection criteria demonstrates that while the color-selected samples contain a larger fraction of the X-ray luminous AGN, there is evidence that these selection techniques also suffer from a higher degree of contamination by star-forming galaxies in the deepest exposures. Considering only those power-law galaxies detected in the X-ray catalog, we derive an obscured fraction of 68% (2:1). Including all of the power-law galaxies suggests an obscured fraction of < 81% (4:1).

10 pags., 9 figs., We study the stellar and star formation properties of the host galaxies of 58 X-ray-selected AGNs in the GOODS portion of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) region at z ∼ 0.5-1.4. The AGNs are selected such that their rest-frame UV to near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are dominated by stellar emission; i.e., they show a prominent 1.6 μm bump, thus minimizing the AGN emission >contamination.> This AGN population comprises approximately 50% of the X-ray-selected AGNs at these redshifts. We find that AGNs reside in the most massive galaxies at the redshifts probed here. Their characteristic stellar masses (M*, ∼ 7.8 × 10 10 and M* ∼ 1.2 × 1011 M⊙ at median redshifts of 0.67 and 1.07, respectively) appear to be representative of the X-ray-selected AGN population at these redshifts and are intermediate between those of local type 2 AGNs and high-redshift (z ∼ 2) AGNs. The inferred black hole masses (MBH ∼ 2 × 108 M ⊙) of typical AGNs are similar to those of optically identified quasars at similar redshifts. Since the AGNs in our sample are much less luminous (L2-10 kev < 1044 erg s-1) than quasars, typical AGNs have low Eddington ratios (η ∼ 0.01-0.001). This suggests that, at least at intermediate redshifts, the cosmic AGN >downsizing> is due to both a decrease in the characteristic stellar mass of typical host galaxies and less efficient accretion. Finally, there is no strong evidence in AGN host galaxies for either highly suppressed star formation (expected if AGNs played a role in quenching star formation) or elevated star formation when compared to mass-selected (i.e., IRAC-selected) galaxies of similar stellar masses and redshifts. © 2008. Deep X-ray surveys by Chandra and XMM-Newton have resolved about 80% of the 2-10 keV cosmic extragalactic X-ray background (CXRB) into point sources, the majority of which are obscured AGN. The obscuration might be connected to processes within the host galaxy, possibly the star-formation rate. Here, we use the results of CXRB synthesis calculations as input to detailed Cloudy simulations in order to predict the evolution of AGN properties at several mid-IR wavelengths. Computations were performed for three different evolutions of the AGN type 2/type 1 ratio between z=0 and 1: where the ratio increased as (1+z)^{0.9}, as (1+z)^{0.3} and one with no redshift evolution. Models were calculated with the inner radius of the absorbing gas and dust at 1 pc or at 10 pc. Comparing the results of the calculations to combined X-ray and Spitzer data of AGN shows that the predicted spectral energy distributions are a good description of average AGNs found in the deep surveys. The existing data indicates that the mid-IR emission from an average AGN is best described by models where the attenuating material is ~10 pc from the central engine. We present the expected Spitzer cumulative number count distributions and the evolution of the total AGN (type 1 + type 2) luminosity function (LF) between z=0 and 1 at rest-frame 8 microns and 30 microns for the three evolutionary scenarios. Mid-infrared observations of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are important for understanding of the physical conditions around the central accretion engines. Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of a 300 arcmin^2 region in the Extended Groth Strip are used to select a sample of~150 AGN. The Spitzer instruments IRAC and MIPS detect 68-80% of these sources, which show a wide range of mid-infrared properties. About 40% of the sources have red power-law spectral energy distributions (f_nu ~ nu^alpha, alpha0) with their infrared emission dominated by the host galaxy; the remaining 20% are not well-fit by a power law. Published IRAC color criteria for AGN select most of the red sources, but only some of the blue sources. As with all other known methods, selecting AGN with mid-IR colors will not produce a sample that is simultaneously complete and reliable. The IRAC SED type does not directly correspond to X-ray spectral type (hard/soft). The mid-IR properties of X-ray-detected Lyman-break, radio, submillimeter, and optically-faint sources vary widely and, for the most part, are not distinct from those of the general X-ray/infrared source population. We present the results of the northern extension of the HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey, a blind HI survey utilizing the multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64-m telescope. We present the discovery of five new quasars at z>5.7, selected from the multicolor imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Three of them, at redshifts 5.93, 6.07, and 6.22, were selected from ~1700 deg^2 of new SDSS Main Survey imaging in the Northern Galactic Cap. An additional quasar, at redshift 5.85, was discovered by coadding the data obtained in the Fall Equatorial Stripe in the SDSS Southern Survey Region. The fifth object, at redshift 5.80, is selected from a non-standard SDSS scan in the Southern Galactic Cap outside the Main Survey area. The spectrum of SDSS J162331.81+311200.5 (z=6.22) shows a complete Gunn-Peterson trough at z_abs > 5.95, similar to the troughs detected in other three z>6.2 quasars known. We present a composite spectrum of the z>5.7 quasars discovered in the SDSS to date. The average emission line and continuum properties of z~6 quasars exhibit no significant evolution compared to those at low redshift. Using a complete sample of nine z>5.7 quasars, we find that the density of quasars with M_1450 < -26.7 at z~6 is (6+/-2) x 10^-10 per Mpc^3 consistent with our previous estimates. The luminosity distribution of the sample is fit with a power law luminosity function Psi(L) ~ L^(-3.2+/-0.7), somewhat steeper than but consistent with our previous estimates., Comment: AJ in press (Aug 2004), 18 pages, 4 figures

Projected axis ratio measurements of 880 early-type galaxies at redshifts 11 early-type galaxies show a variety of intrinsic shapes; even at a fixed mass, the projected axis ratio distributions cannot be explained by the random projection of a set of galaxies with very similar intrinsic shapes. However, a two-population model for the intrinsic shapes, consisting of a triaxial, fairly round population, combined with a flat (c/a~0.3) oblate population, adequately describes the projected axis ratio distributions of both present-day and z>1 early-type galaxies. We find that the proportion of oblate versus triaxial galaxies depends both on the galaxies' stellar mass, and - at a given mass - on redshift. For present-day and z1 this trend is much weaker over the mass range explored here (10^101, compared to 0.20+-0.02 at z~0.1. This paper describes the Hubble Space Telescope imaging data products and data reduction procedures for the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). This survey is designed to document the evolution of galaxies and black holes at $z\sim1.5-8$, and to study Type Ia SNe beyond $z>1.5$. Five premier multi-wavelength sky regions are selected, each with extensive multiwavelength observations. The primary CANDELS data consist of imaging obtained in the Wide Field Camera 3 / infrared channel (WFC3/IR) and UVIS channel, along with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The CANDELS/Deep survey covers \sim125 square arcminutes within GOODS-N and GOODS-S, while the remainder consists of the CANDELS/Wide survey, achieving a total of \sim800 square arcminutes across GOODS and three additional fields (EGS, COSMOS, and UDS). We summarize the observational aspects of the survey as motivated by the scientific goals and present a detailed description of the data reduction procedures and products from the survey. Our data reduction methods utilize the most up to date calibration files and image combination procedures. We have paid special attention to correcting a range of instrumental effects, including CTE degradation for ACS, removal of electronic bias-striping present in ACS data after SM4, and persistence effects and other artifacts in WFC3/IR. For each field, we release mosaics for individual epochs and eventual mosaics containing data from all epochs combined, to facilitate photometric variability studies and the deepest possible photometry. Using a sample of ~28,000 sources selected at 3.6-4.5 microns with Spitzer observations of the HDF-N, the CDF-S, and the Lockman Hole (surveyed area: ~664 arcmin^2), we study the evolution of the stellar mass content of the Universe at 010^12.0 M_sun) assembled the bulk of their stellar content rapidly (in 1-2 Gyr) beyond z~3 in very intense star formation events (producing high specific SFRs). Galaxies with 10^11.52.5 is dominated by optically faint (R>25) red galaxies (Distant Red Galaxies or BzK sources) which account for ~30% of the global population of galaxies, but contribute at least 60% to the cosmic stellar mass density.
