Uranium trioxide displays a complex chemical phase space, with at least six structurally distinct polymorphs accessible via different synthetic routes. Remarkably, despite its technological importance, full structural and electronic characterization of these polymorphs remains an open area of study. δ-UO3 in particular has attracted significant theoretical attention due to its high point group and space group symmetries, having U (VI) in octahedral coordination with polyhedra interconnected through corner-sharing to build a 3-D cubic lattice with space group symmetry Pm-3m and Z = 1. Critical experimental information, such as its optical vibrational spectra, are not known. Here, we study the Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of δ-UO3 together with the support of density functional theory (DFT) calculations for spectral interpretation. A symmetry analysis of the DFT-predicted phonon eigenmodes indicates that δ-UO3 should have two IR active modes and no Raman active modes. Experimental results, however, indicate significant Raman scattering from δ-UO3. We therefore propose four potential explanations for this apparent contradiction: a possible tetragonal distortion to the cubic cell, the existence of a surface impurity layer, vacancy scattering, and structural activation of Raman signal. We use powder X-ray diffraction and confocal Raman spectroscopy with depth profiling to investigate these possibilities and suggest future experiments to explore this phenomenon in more detail. Understanding the lattice dynamics of δ-UO3 is important for identification of technogenic U phases via Raman and infrared spectroscopy and our results indicate that the simple understanding of δ-UO3 as a high-symmetry cubic structure should be reconsidered.

The lattice vibrational dynamics in ultra-fragile Pt₅₇Cu₂₃P₂₀ and Pt₆₀Cu₂₀P₂₀ glasses were investigated using in situ inelastic neutron scattering to measure the evolution of the phonon density of states (DOS) through the glass transition, into the undercooled liquid phase, and through crystallization. The phonon DOS curves are remarkably similar for the undercooled liquids and the amorphous solids. The vibrational entropy was obtained with these phonon DOS curves, and changes in vibrational entropy caused by the glass transition are less than 0.05 k_B/atom. For these highly fragile metal/metalloid glasses, the excess vibrational entropy of the undercooled liquid is about 0.5–1.5 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹, compared to 0.1 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ reported earlier for stronger Cu–Zr glasses. Our work suggests that, consistent with our previous report for less fragile metallic glasses, the fraction of the total excess entropy that is vibrational is small, and the discontinuity in excess entropy at the glass transition is mainly due to configurational entropy.

Carbon fiber (CF) is a promising lightweight alternative to steel and is of significant interest for energy applications. As CF continues to find new uses and is exposed to new external conditions, a noninvasive method of monitoring its structural integrity is critical. Raman spectroscopy is a commonly used method for this monitoring; however, it is highly inferential, and the interpretation of the data is not always straightforward. In this work, we perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate changes in the vibrational properties of CF structural units (i.e., graphene and graphite) caused by monovacancy and Dienes defects as a foundation for modeling more complex defects that move our model toward that of realistic CF. Using large computational supercells, we can understand how these defects change the electronic structure and vibrational properties of graphene and graphite for interdefect distances near those of the lower experimental limit. The monovacancy opens an electronic bandgap at the K point. Although no such electronic gap is opened by the Dienes defect, both defects introduce flat defect bands near the Fermi energy. The Dienes defect creates long-range deviations of the phonons, leading to substantial broadening of the highest frequency optical modes in the band structure compared to that of the pristine material. In contrast, the phonon changes caused by the monovacancy are short range, and only minor changes in the band structure or phonon density of states were observed. These findings can assist in the interpretation of experimental results by providing atomic-scale insight into key electronic and vibrational features.

Hexagonal iron sulfide exhibits a fascinating coexistence of metal–insulator, structural and magnetic transitions, reflecting an intimate interplay of its spin, phonon and charge degrees of freedom. Here, we show how a subtle competition of energetic and entropic free-energy components governs its thermodynamics and the sequence of phase transitions it undergoes upon cooling. By means of comprehensive neutron and X-ray scattering measurements, and supported by first-principles electronic structure simulations, we identify the critical role of the coupling between antiferromagnetic ordering and instabilities of anharmonic phonons in the metallic phase in driving the metal–insulator transition. The antiferromagnetic ordering enables the emergence of two zone-boundary soft phonons, whose coupling to a zone-centre mode drives the lattice distortion opening the electronic bandgap. Simultaneously, spin–lattice coupling opens a gap in the magnon spectrum that controls the entropy component of the metal–insulator transition free energy. These results reveal the importance of spin–phonon coupling to tune anharmonic effects, thus opening new avenues to design novel technologically important materials harbouring the metal–insulator transition and magnetoelectric behaviours. A detailed and systematic X-ray and neutron scattering study of hexagonal iron sulfide uncovers the critical role of spin–phonon coupling in promoting the metal–insulator transition in this system.

Significance Unveiling the unusual atomic dynamics in superionic conductors is critical for the design of energy conversion and storage materials, for example to rationalize their thermal transport properties in thermoelectric applications or their fast ionic conductivity in solid-state electrolytes. We combine neutron/X-ray scattering techniques with first-principles calculations to discover hybrid lattice dynamics in A g C r S e 2 , where the phonon wavelength controls the breakdown of transverse acoustic modes in the superionic phase. We attribute the ultralow thermal conductivity to strong phonon anharmonicity combined with disorder in the Ag sublattice. This understanding provides insights into the thermal conduction mechanism in superionic conductors and sheds light on the role of lattice dynamics in the emergence of superionic behavior.

Although the literature on the Raman spectra of carbon fibers is vast, no consistent, robust predictive relationship between mechanical properties of carbon fibers and spectral parameters exists. This shortcoming is due to the use of numerous fitting functions to evaluate Raman spectra of carbon fibers and the inconsistencies in establishing the best fitting models in a statistically robust fashion. To address this gap, we present a comprehensive work on the Raman spectra of carbon fibers that combines a vast library of experimental data with a robust numerical analysis and a statistical evaluation of a wide range of suggested fitting models. This manuscript begins with a brief review of the commonly applied fitting models. Then, the Raman spectra of 32 commercially available polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers collected at excitation wavelengths 532, 633, and 785 nm are presented and the best fit for all fibers is evaluated based on several statistical criteria in conjunction with numerical calculations and physical arguments. The results suggest that high-performance fibers must be fit with at least five peaks, whereas high-tensile modulus fibers are best fit with at least six distinct peaks. Finally, we employ simultaneous fitting of the Raman spectra of specific fibers and wavelengths and demonstrate that strong correlations exist between mechanical properties and the D1 peak position and shape across the range of evaluated mechanical properties. We suggest straightforward improvements in fitting analysis procedures that can be implemented to increase coherency in the understanding of the underlying carbon fiber microstructure intuited from Raman spectroscopy.

Multiphase mixtures of the uranium fluoride compounds UFx with x = 3, 4, 4.5, 5, whose local U–F bonding geometry is conserved, may result from UF6 reduction. One method for identifying multiphase mixtures is optical vibrational spectroscopy, but experimental Raman and IR spectra for UFx compounds are difficult to obtain. To supplement those experimental measurements, we use density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) with the on-site Coulomb correction (Hubbard + U) to calculate the phonon normal modes, their IR intensity, and their Raman activity for UF3, UF4, U2F9, and UF5. In addition, we use neutron spectroscopy to measure the phonon density of states of the most stable UF4. Our measurements on the Wide-Angular Range Chopper Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source indicate that UF4 has a broad phonon spectrum centered at about 30 meV, but modeling of this spectrum indicates significant multiphonon scattering is present. DFPT calculations for U2F9, which shares structural features with UF4 and UF5, suggest a dynamic instability and we speculate that previous crystallographic measurements of this compound were possible only in multiphase mixtures. Analysis of the detailed atomic motions of phonons in UF5 indicate that a series of high energy modes (between 69 and 75 meV) are described by motion of single-coordinated F atoms (bonded to only one U atom). These single-coordinated F atoms are unique to the UF5 structure and those modes could be used to distinguish UF5 in a multiphase mixture using optical spectroscopy.

Mixed-phase and low-symmetry systems are widely observed among uranium oxide materials. Amorphous-U2O7 forms during the calcination of studtite, a uranyl peroxide mineral. Using a genetic algorithm search for stable crystalline phases, we have identified a potentially stable phase of U2O7 that shares structural features with experimentally observed amorphous U2O7 samples. The crystalline structure is expected to undergo a solid–solid phase change around 12 GPa.

Hydrated uranyl fluoride, [(UO2F2)(H2O)]7·4H2O, is not stable at elevated water vapor pressure, undergoing a complete loss of fluorine to form a uranyl hydroxide hydrate. Powder X-ray diffraction data of the resultant uranyl hydroxide species is presented for the first time, along with Raman and infrared (IR) spectra. The new uranyl hydroxide species is structurally similar to the layered uranyl hydroxide hydrate minerals schoepite and metaschoepite, but has a significantly expanded interlayer spacing (c = 15.12 vs. 14.73 A), suggesting that additional H2O molecules may be present between the uranyl layers. Comparison of the Raman and IR spectra of this new uranyl hydroxide hydrate and synthetic metaschoepite ([(UO2)4O(OH)6]·5H2O) suggests that the equatorial environment of the uranyl ion may differ and that H2O molecules in the new species participate in stronger hydrogen bonds. In addition, the interlayer spacing of both this new uranyl hydroxide species and synthetic metaschoepite is shown to be sensitive to the environmental humidity, contracting and re-expanding with desiccation and rehydration. Structural distinction between the new uranyl hydroxide species and synthetic metaschoepite is confirmed by a comparison of the thermal behavior; unlike metaschoepite, the new hydrate does not form α-UO2(OH)2 upon dehydration.

Low temperature powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on three different powder samples; parent BaMn 2 As 2 ,12.5% K-doped Ba 0.875 K 0.125 Mn 2 As 2 and 25% K-doped Ba ( 0.75 ) K 0.25 Mn 2 As 2 . The Heisenberg Model involving J 1 ‐ J 2 ‐ J z coupling constants were compared to the data by a powder integration routine using Monte Carlo integration methods. The best magnetic parameters were selected using a chi-square test where model intensities were compared to the full (q,E) dependence of magnetic scattering. A key step to this analysis is the characterization of the background which is formed mostly by phonon scattering intensities along with other sources including the magnetic impurity scattering events. The calculated powder magnetic intensities added to the estimated background obtained from the non-magnetic high momentum transfer region. The agreement between the simulated and the raw data enabled us to perform quantitative analysis of the unreacted MnO impurities. Overall, this is another confirmation along with earlier studies using this technique, that magnetic exchange constants can be calculated within an acceptable range with a very quick inelastic neutron powder experiment without need for a single crystal sample.

Determining the correct electronic structure of ${\mathrm{U}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ remains a formidable experimental and theoretical challenge. In the low-temperature phase, two crystallographic U sites are separated into a distinct 2U(V)$+1\mathrm{U}$(VI) oxidation configuration. At low temperatures, the U(V) sites form a distorted honeycomb lattice, but the U(VI) sit on a triangular sublattice, suggesting potential for magnetic frustration effects. The spin configuration of the unpaired $f$ electrons on the U(V) sites is likely antiferromagnetic (AFM) from susceptibility measurements, but this has not been confirmed. Here, we present a neutron scattering investigation of the structure and dynamics of ${\mathrm{U}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ from 1.7 to 600 K. We confirm static AFM ordering onset at between 22 and 25 K, which is present down to at least 1.7 K with AFM peaks corresponding to [0.5 1 1] and [0.5 2 2] in the orthorhombic phase. These measurements rule out static AFM order along the $a$ axis of the $Amm2$ phase, a configuration previously suggested by theory. Above 100 K a quasielastic scattering channel opens that we speculate arises from a lattice relaxation response to thermally activated electron hopping. This term does not conform to a magnetic form factor, so it is not related to spin relaxations. If correct, this mechanism stabilizes a continuous valence transition from $2\mathrm{U}(\mathrm{V})+1\mathrm{U}(\mathrm{VI})$ in the low-temperature ($Tl600$ K) orthorhombic phase to the hexagonal phase that contains only one degenerate U site, wherein the U valence can be dynamically stabilized between $\mathrm{U}(\mathrm{V})\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}\mathrm{U}(\mathrm{VI})$ by phonon-assisted electron hopping.

We present a temperature-dependent investigation of the local structure and magnetic dynamics of the FeAs binary. The magnetic susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}(T)$ result shows an anomalous broad feature up to 550 K, with \ensuremath{\chi} continuing to increase above the N\'eel antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (${T}_{\mathrm{N}}=70\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$), peaking at \ensuremath{\sim}250 K, then decreasing gently above. It is remarkable that this peak susceptibility temperature corresponds to the onset of anisotropic negative thermal expansion in both the $a$ and $c$ axes, suggesting that magnetic interactions are affecting the structure even well above the N\'eel point. A systematic investigation into local bonding correlations, from time-of-flight neutron pair distribution function analyses, shows the octahedral volume around each Fe site growing monotonically while adjacent octahedra tilt toward one another before relaxing away past this peak in the anomalous magnetic susceptibility. We use inelastic-neutron scattering to map spin-wave excitations in FeAs at temperatures above and below the ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$. We find magnetic excitations near ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$ to be very different from the excitations in the ground state at 1.5 K. Spin waves measured at 1.5 K are three dimensional (3D), however, in the vicinity of the magnetic transition, the magnetic fluctuations clearly indicate two-dimensional (2D) character in this intrinsically 3D crystal structure. Unlike the undoped 2D parents of iron-arsenide superconductors, where the magnetic correlations are considerably weaker along the $c$ axis than in the $\mathit{ab}$ plane, inelastic neutron scattering here shows that the spin fluctuations in the 3D FeAs binary are nearly 2D in the $\mathit{bc}$ plane at 90 K. These results demonstrate the importance of short-range correlations in understanding the magnetic properties of transition-metal binaries, and suggest how 2D excitations, even in a 3D structure, can potentially become a breeding ground for unconventional superconductivity.

There is growing interest in using ultrafast light pulses to drive functional materials into nonequilibrium states with novel properties. The conventional wisdom is that above gap photoexcitation behaves similarly to raising the electronic temperature and lacks the desired selectivity in the final state. Here we report a novel nonthermal lattice instability induced by ultrafast above-gap excitation in SnSe, a representative of the IV-VI class of semiconductors that provides a rich platform for tuning material functionality with ultrafast pulses due to their multiple lattice instabilities. The new lattice instability is accompanied by a drastic softening of the lowest frequency A$_g$ phonon. This mode has previously been identified as the soft mode in the thermally driven phase transition to a Cmcm structure. However, by a quantitative reconstruction of the atomic displacements from time-resolved x-ray diffraction for multiple Bragg peaks and excitation densities, we show that ultrafast photoexcitation with near-infrared (1.55 eV) light, induces a distortion towards a different structure with Immm symmetry. The Immm structure of SnSe is an orthorhombic distortion of the rocksalt structure and does not occur in equilibrium. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the photoinduced Immm lattice instability arises from electron excitation from the Se 4$p$- and Sn 5$s$-derived bands deep below the Fermi level that cannot be excited thermally. The results have implications for optical control of the thermoelectric, ferroelectric and topological properties of the monochalcogenides and related materials. More generally, the results emphasize the need for ultrafast structural probes to reveal distinct atomic-scale dynamics that are otherwise too subtle or invisible in conventional spectroscopies.

Inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal of silicon was performed at temperatures from 100 to 1500 K. These experimental data were reduced to obtain phonon spectral intensity at all wave vectors $\stackrel{P\vec}{Q}$ and frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}$ in the first Brillouin zone. Thermal broadenings of the phonon peaks were obtained by fitting and by calculating with an iterative ab initio method that uses thermal atom displacements on an ensemble of superlattices. Agreement between the calculated and experimental broadenings was good, with possible discrepancies at the highest temperatures. Distributions of phonon widths versus phonon energy had similar shapes for computation and experiment. These distributions grew with temperature but maintained similar shapes. Parameters from the ab initio calculations were used to obtain the thermal conductivity from the Boltzmann transport equation, which was in good agreement with experimental data. Despite the high group velocities of longitudinal acoustic phonons, their shorter lifetimes reduced their contribution to the thermal conductivity, which was dominated by transverse acoustic modes.

Direct engineering of material properties through exploitation of spin, phonon, and charge-coupled degrees of freedom is an active area of development in materials science. However, the relative contribution of the competing orders to controlling the desired behavior is challenging to decipher. In particular, the independent role of phonons, magnons, and electrons, quasiparticle coupling, and relative contributions to the phase transition free energy largely remain unexplored, especially for magnetic phase transitions. Here, we study the lattice and magnetic dynamics of biferroic yttrium orthochromite using Raman, infrared, and inelastic neutron spectroscopy techniques, supporting our experimental results with first-principles lattice dynamics and spin-wave simulations across the antiferromagnetic transition at T N ∼ 138 K. Spectroscopy data and simulations together with the heat capacity (C p ) measurements, allow us to quantify individual entropic contributions from phonons (0.01 ± 0.01k B atom−1), dilational (0.03 ± 0.01k B atom−1), and magnons (0.11 ± 0.01k B atom−1) across T N. High-resolution phonon measurements conducted in a magnetic field show that anomalous T-dependence of phonon energies across T N originates from magnetoelastic coupling. Phonon scattering is primarily governed by the phonon–phonon coupling, with little contribution from magnon–phonon coupling, short-range spin correlations, or magnetostriction effects; a conclusion further supported by our thermal conductivity measurements conducted up to 14 T, and phenomenological modeling.

Due to their ability to convert thermal gradients into useful electrical energy, thermoelectrics are promising for energy efficiency uses. Thermoelectric conversion rates are driven by the ratio of electrical to thermal conductivity in the material, thus substantial research focuses on balancing these competing mechanisms. Here the authors use state-of-the-art neutron scattering and computational modeling to investigate the temperature dependence of the crystal structure, phonon dispersions, and phonon lifetimes to provide new microscopic insight to thermal conductivity suppression in AgBiSe2, a thermoelectric exhibiting a cationic sublattice disordering at high temperature. These combined efforts enable the authors to definitively describe contributions to the thermal conductivity arising from a step-like change in phonon scattering rates directly originating from the combined effects of mass and force-constant disorder due to cation disorder at the structural phase transition. This study highlights the potential of tunable microstructures to control phonon scattering rates in real materials, a necessary component for rational material design, particularly for thermoelectrics.

Triuranium octoxide $({\mathrm{U}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8})$ undergoes an orthorhombic to hexagonal structural phase transition near ${T}_{s}=305{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$, and a separate nonstructural phase transition at ${T}_{c}=210{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$. The later transition has previously been associated with temperature-induced fluctuations in the uranium oxidation state. A discontinuity in the slope of electrical conductivity versus temperature measurement at $210{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$ has supported this idea. The orthorhombic phase has three crystallographic sites in two distinct oxidation configurations [2 U(V) and 1 U(VI)], whereas the hexagonal phase has one distinct uranium site. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements eliminate the possibility of superlattice Bragg reflections to less than 0.2 ${\mathrm{e}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ scattering power and ${\mathrm{U}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ is not metallic; consequently, the presence of oxidation fluctuations is required for charge balancing. Interestingly, the order-to-disorder transition occurs at a much lower temperature than the structural transition. Using temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we show anisotropic lattice expansion in the in-plane $b$ and $c$ lattice constants. A specific discontinuity in the temperature derivatives of the $b$ and $c$ lattice constants are the first reported structural signatures of the order-to-disorder transition, suggestive of a change in local U--O coordination. Phonon frequencies of ${\mathrm{U}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ measured by Raman spectroscopy show significant temperature-dependent dynamics. Redshifting of several modes between 40 and $300{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$ cannot be explained by unit cell expansion alone because the unit cell volume decreases in this region. Instead, we show that phonon frequencies are highly correlated with the anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction along specific crystallographic directions.

Single-phase β-UO

Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) in superionic conductors is of great interest for energy conversion applications in thermoelectrics. Yet, the complex atomic dynamics leading to superionicity and ultralow thermal conductivity remain poorly understood. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the lattice dynamics and superionic diffusion in [Formula: see text] from energy- and momentum-resolved neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, combined with first-principles calculations. Our results settle unresolved questions about the lattice dynamics and thermal conduction mechanism in [Formula: see text]. We find that the heat-carrying long-wavelength transverse acoustic (TA) phonons coexist with the ultrafast diffusion of Ag ions in the superionic phase, while the short-wavelength nondispersive TA phonons break down. Strong scattering of phonon quasiparticles by anharmonicity and Ag disorder are the origin of intrinsically low [Formula: see text]. The breakdown of short-wavelength TA phonons is directly related to the Ag diffusion, with the vibrational spectral weight associated to Ag oscillations evolving into stochastic decaying fluctuations. Furthermore, the origin of fast ionic diffusion is shown to arise from extended flat basins in the energy landscape and collective hopping behavior facilitated by strong repulsion between Ag ions. These results provide fundamental insights into the complex atomic dynamics of superionic conductors.

e-UO3 is an exotic polymorph in the uranium trioxide system with an undetermined crystal structure and limited optical vibrational spectroscopic data. To improve understanding of this compound, we synthesize and investigate the crystal structure and optical vibrational spectra of e-UO3. Infrared spectra collected for e-UO3 are in good agreement with previously published results, and our studies extend the available data into the low-energy (600–100 cm–1) regime. For the first time, Raman spectra are presented for e-UO3 using both 785 and 532 nm excitation wavelengths. Previous reports suggest an impurity phase may be present in e-UO3 produced by calcination of U3O8; however, spectral center-of-mass calculations, principal component analyses, and Raman spectroscopic mapping employed to investigate this possibility indicate that the product of U3O8 calcined in O3(g) in this work is likely phase-pure. A possible novel structure solution for e-UO3 is determined via Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data and is triclinic, P-1, with a = 4.01 A, b = 3.85 A, c = 4.18 A, and α = 98.26 °, β = 90.41 °, γ = 120.46 ° (Rwp = 8.30 %). The asymmetric unit of e-UO3 consists of U(VI) in hexagonal bipyramidal coordination with displaced equatorial oxygen. Further analysis reveals that e-UO3 is best described by a 2 × 1 × 2 supercell structure in P-1 with a = 8.03 A, b = 3.86 A, c = 8.37 A with α = 98.26 °, β = 90.41 °, and γ = 120.46 °, although a higher-symmetry structure is possible. Optical vibrational spectroscopic and structural measurements of e-UO3 presented here furthers our understanding of this complex uranium oxide and clarifies the origin of reported structural similarity to U3O8.

Superionic crystals exhibit ionic mobilities comparable to liquids while maintaining a periodic crystalline lattice. The atomic dynamics leading to large ionic mobility have long been debated. A central question is whether phonon quasiparticles—which conduct heat in regular solids—survive in the superionic state, where a large fraction of the system exhibits liquid-like behaviour. Here we present the results of energy- and momentum-resolved scattering studies combined with first-principles calculations and show that in the superionic phase of CuCrSe2, long-wavelength acoustic phonons capable of heat conduction remain largely intact, whereas specific phonon quasiparticles dominated by the Cu ions break down as a result of anharmonicity and disorder. The weak bonding and large anharmonicity of the Cu sublattice are present already in the normal ordered state, resulting in low thermal conductivity even below the superionic transition. These results demonstrate that anharmonic phonon dynamics are at the origin of low thermal conductivity and superionicity in this class of materials. Neutron and X-ray scattering studies combined with first-principles calculations suggest that the large, liquid-like ionic mobility in the canonical superionic crystal CuCrSe2 is due to anharmonic phonon dynamics.

The structure and lattice dynamics of the hybrid improper ferroelectric compound ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{3\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ (for $x=0,0.6,$ and 0.9) have been studied with a combination of diffraction, inelastic scattering experiments, Raman spectroscopy, and calorimetry measurements, as well as first-principles simulations. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we have measured the phonon density of states (DOS) for $x=0.9$, which revealed a strong broadening but little change in phonon energies on heating from 10 K to 728 K across the ferroelectric phase transition temperature, ${T}_{FE}$. Using inelastic x-ray scattering, the momentum-resolved phonon dispersions were measured from 80 K to 950 K on a single crystal (for $x=0.6$), and also revealed a strong phonon broadening but a small energy shift for acoustic modes on heating across ${T}_{FE}$. Our Raman measurements (for $x=0.6$) showed robust rotational and oxygen breathing modes but soft tilt modes, consistent with previous measurements on similar compounds. Our density functional calculations achieve good agreement with both the phonon DOS and dispersions measured. We did not observe any unusual quadratic dispersion for $c$-polarized transverse acoustic modes, at odds with a recently predicted quasi-2D character, for either undoped ($x=0$) or doped ($x=0.6$) compounds.

Phonon scattering by point defects via mass differences and strain fluctuations could effectively reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. The atomic mass difference can be maximized by introducing the vacancies thus leading to a significant phonon scattering. Usually, the vacancies are introduced by tuning the stoichiometry or forming solid solution with certain compound that contains intrinsically high concentration of vacancies. In this work, we demonstrate that vacancies can be effectively induced by the self-compensation effect via chemical doping. Indium (In) vacancies in InSb were induced by Te-doping and a substantial reduction in thermal conductivity was observed. Room temperature lattice thermal conductivity of the melted and then hot-pressed InSb (without In vacancies) is ~ 14.5 W m−1 K−1 but only ~ 3.8 W m−1 K−1 for InSb0.96Te0.04 (with In vacancies), a reduction of ~ 74%. The advantage of using this strategy for phonon engineering lies in the fact that a substantial reduction in thermal conductivity can be achieved even when the dopant concentration is rather low. Since the self-compensation effect is widely observed in different compounds, it indicates that the vacancy engineering strategy used here is also applicable to a variety of other materials to effectively reduce the lattice thermal conductivity.

Magnetoelectrics offer tantalizing opportunities for devices coupling ferroelectricity and magnetism but remain difficult to realize. Breakthrough strategies could circumvent the mutually exclusive origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity by exploiting the interaction of multiple phonon modes in geometric improper and hybrid improper ferroelectrics. Yet, the proposed instability of a zone-boundary phonon mode, driving the emergence of ferroelectricity via coupling to a polar mode, remains to be directly observed. Here, we provide previously missing evidence for this scenario in the archetypal improper ferroelectric, yttrium manganite, through comprehensive scattering measurements of the atomic structure and phonons, supported with first-principles simulations. Our experiments and theoretical modeling resolve the origin of the unusual temperature dependence of the polarization and rule out a reported double-step ferroelectric transition. These results emphasize the critical role of phonon anharmonicity in rationalizing lattice instabilities in improper ferroelectrics and show that including these effects in simulations could facilitate the design of magnetoelectrics., The improper ferroelectric mechanism of YMnO3 has been difficult to observe directly but is important for understanding its other interesting properties such as multiferroicity. Bansal et al. use neutron scattering and ab initio calculations to show that phonons drive the transition, confirming earlier theories.

Solid-state carbon materials, such as graphite and graphene, are at the forefront of materials research because of their unique electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties, leading to a broad range of potential and realized applications. One key application is their role as basic structural units of carbon fiber (CF), a lightweight alternative to steel. In CF, a delicate relationship exists between ultimate material strength and the atomic-scale density of defects contained at the inter- and intra-subunit levels. Computational studies provide insight into the stability of various types of defects that can form in these systems and connect with experimental observables such as bandgap and spectroscopic measurements. Therefore, the literature contains many computational studies that focus on changes induced by defects, including vacancies and Dienes transformations (Stone-Wales and Thrower defects). However, wide-ranging methods and cell sizes have been used, and property-specific information is often lacking. This review summarizes key literature findings, paying particular attention to changes in the electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties induced by defects in graphitic materials relevant to CF.

We confirm that synthetic uranyl hydroxide hydrate metaschoepite [(UO)24O(OH)6]·5H2O is unstable against dehydration under dry conditions, and we present a structural and vibrational spectroscopic study of synthetic metaschoepite and its ambient temperature dehydration product. Complementary structural (X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction) and vibrational spectroscopic techniques (Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and inelastic neutron scattering) are used to probe different components of these species. Analysis of the dehydration product suggests that it contains both pentagonally coordinated and hexagonally coordinated uranyl ions, necessitating that some uranyl ions undergo a coordination change during the dehydration of pentagonally coordinated metaschoepite. Vibrational spectra of metaschoepite and its dehydration product are interpreted with power spectra generated from ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories, allowing assignment of all major features. We identify the uranyl symmetric stretching modes of the four distinct uranyl ions in synthetic metaschoepite and clarify the assignment of lower energy Raman modes in both structures. The coanalysis of experimental and computational data reveals a strong coupling between the uranyl stretching modes and hydroxide bending modes in the anhydrous structure, leading to the presence of several high-energy combination bands in the inelastic neutron scattering data.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2}, derived from SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveal the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors Q_{AF}=(1,0) and Q_{FM}=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo_{2}As_{2} are closely associated with a flatband of the e_{g} orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the t_{2g} orbitals in superconducting SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2}. Therefore, Co substitution in SrFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} induces a t_{2g} to e_{g} orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that long-range spin waves arising from the static bicollinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order in FeTe, which have twofold rotational symmetry in a fully detwinned crystal, rapidly dissolve above $E\approx 26$ meV into ridges of scattering with fourfold rotational symmetry and a nearly isotropic magnetic fluctuation spectrum. With increasing temperature above $T_N\approx 68$ K, the twofold spin waves change into broad regions of scattering with fourfold symmetry. Since the scattering patterns from plaquette magnetic order generated within a bilinear biquadratic Hamiltonian have fourfold rotational symmetry consistent with the high-energy, spin-isotropic spin waves of FeTe, we conclude that the bicollinear AF state in FeTe is quasidegenerate with plaquette magnetic order, providing evidence for the strongly frustrated nature of the local moments in iron chalcogenide family of iron-based superconductors., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is uniquely sensitive to hydrogen due to its comparatively large thermal neutron scattering cross-section (82 b). Consequently, the inclusion of water in real samples presents significant challenges to INS data analysis due directly to the scattering strength of hydrogen. Here, we investigate uranyl fluoride (UO2F2) with inelastic neutron scattering. UO2F2 is the hydrolysis product of uranium hexafluoride (UF6), and is a hygroscopic, uranyl-ion containing particulate. Raman spectral signatures are commonly used for inferential understanding of the chemical environment for the uranyl ion in UO2F2, but no direct measurement of the influence of absorbed water molecules on the overall lattice dynamics has been performed until now. To deconvolute the influence of waters on the observed INS spectra, we use density functional theory with full spectral modeling to separate lattice motion from water coupling. In particular, we present a careful and novel analysis of the Q-dependent Debye–Waller factor, allowing us to separate spectral contributions by mass, which reveals preferential water coupling to the uranyl stretching vibrations. Coupled with the detailed partial phonon densities of states calculated via DFT, we infer the probable adsorption locations of interlayer waters. We explain that a common spectral feature in Raman spectra of uranyl fluoride originates from the interaction of water molecules with the uranyl ion based on this analysis. The Debye–Waller analysis is applicable to all INS spectra and could be used to identify light element contributions in other systems.

Understanding the thermal pyrolysis of epoxies and their copolymers is important for identifying structural changes resultant from thermal transients, enabling identification of failure modes of high-performance composite materials. This work expands our understanding of the thermal pyrolysis of cured epoxies and the role of temperature and composition on products, pathways, and relative rates. Numerous researchers have explored the pyrolysis of bisphenol A (BPA) epoxy. Significantly fewer have studied bisphenol F (BPF), and copolymers of BPA and BPF have been neglected. In this work, a pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometer (PY-GC-MS) was used to investigate the degradation mechanism of homopolymerized BPA, BPF epoxies and their copolymers. For polymer identification, pyrolysis >450 °C resulted in the most extensive fragmentation and is useful for material identification, though lower temperatures show different degradation product profiles that provide mechanistic insight into thermal degradation pathways. Temperature greatly influences the accessible pyrolysis pathways of BPA, revealing dual mechanisms of formation for products p-isopropylphenol and p-isopropenylphenol. For BPF at low pyrolysis temperature the p,p-bisphenol F isomer is produced at significantly lower relative abundance compared to the abundance at higher temperatures tested, but production of the other two isomers changes little with respect to temperature. This suggests the epoxy components consisting of the p,p-bisphenol F isomer have higher thermal stability. Overall, the copolymer epoxies were found to have similar degradation products in stoichiometric distributions. The major exception was the formation of the p,p-bisphenol F isomer, which shows evidence of thermal stabilizing effects from addition of BPA epoxy.

Under humid conditions, uranyl fluoride ([(UO2F2)(H2O)]7·4H2O) undergoes a loss of fluorine to form a uranyl hydroxide species, which can be further hydrated to form a uranyl peroxide species. X-ray diffraction data of the uranyl peroxide product is presented for the first time. In addition, the temperature and humidity conditions under which these reactions occur have been clarified by a 220-day experiment using microRaman spectroscopy to track chemical changes in individual particles of uranyl fluoride. At 25 and 35∘C, uranyl fluoride is found to be stable at 32% relative humidity but not stable at and above 59% relative humidity. We show that water vapor pressure is the driving factor in formation of both the hydroxide and peroxide products. The kinetics of the transformation from uranyl fluoride into uranyl hydroxide is consistent with a denucleation reaction following the absorption of water molecules.

Uranium oxides are readily amenable to investigation using Raman spectroscopy, and this technique is frequently used as a chemical analysis tool. We show, in triuranium octoxide (U3O8), the presence of previously unreported Raman peaks located below 100 cm−1. By maximum intensity, the strongest peak in U3O8 appears at 54 cm−1 and is resolution limited, making this mode an ideal candidate for chemically identifying U3O8 using Raman spectroscopy. Detailed peak analysis indicates that the main spectral feature between 300 and 500 cm−1 is more accurately described by a septet than a triplet. Two samples of differing oxygen content show only minor differences in bulk crystal structure, but subtle changes in lattice dynamics are suggestive of defect scattering in analogy to UO2+x.

The nuclear cross-sections of certain isotopes make some materials excellent candidates for neutron shielding. We have performed a series of measurements examining the transmission, reflection, and nuclear Bragg scattering of a series of common materials used for neutron shielding. We concentrate on characterizing the materials most likely to be used in neutron scattering instrumentation.

Despite the widespread use of silicon in modern technology, its peculiar thermal expansion is not well understood. Adapting harmonic phonons to the specific volume at temperature, the quasiharmonic approximation, has become accepted for simulating the thermal expansion, but has given ambiguous interpretations for microscopic mechanisms. To test atomistic mechanisms, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments from 100 K to 1,500 K on a single crystal of silicon to measure the changes in phonon frequencies. Our state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, which fully account for phonon anharmonicity and nuclear quantum effects, reproduced the measured shifts of individual phonons with temperature, whereas quasiharmonic shifts were mostly of the wrong sign. Surprisingly, the accepted quasiharmonic model was found to predict the thermal expansion owing to a large cancellation of contributions from individual phonons.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the itinerant antiferromagnet CaCo_{2-y}As_{2} at a temperature of 8 K reveal two orthogonal planes of scattering perpendicular to the Co square lattice in reciprocal space, demonstrating the presence of effective one-dimensional spin interactions. These results are shown to arise from near-perfect bond frustration within the J_{1}-J_{2} Heisenberg model on a square lattice with ferromagnetic J_{1} and hence indicate that the extensive previous experimental and theoretical study of the J_{1}-J_{2} Heisenberg model on local-moment square spin lattices should be expanded to include itinerant spin systems.

We present the design and operating characteristics of a vacuum furnace used for inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a time-of-flight chopper spectrometer. The device is an actively water cooled radiant heating furnace capable of performing experiments up to 1873 K. Inelastic neutron scattering studies performed with this furnace include studies of phonon dynamics and metallic liquids. We describe the design, control, characterization, and limitations of the equipment. Further, we provide comparisons of the neutron performance of our device with commercially available options. Finally we consider upgrade paths to improve performance and reliability.

${\mathrm{BaMn}}_{2}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ is an antiferromagnetic insulator where a metal-insulator transition occurs with hole doping via the substitution of Ba with K. The metal-insulator transition causes only a small suppression of the N\'eel temperature (${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$) and the ordered moment, suggesting that doped holes interact weakly with the Mn spin system. Powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on three different samples of ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{K}}_{x}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ with $x=0$, 0.125, and 0.25 to study the effect of hole doping and metallization on the spin dynamics. We compare the neutron intensities to a linear spin-wave theory approximation to the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{c}$ Heisenberg model. Hole doping is found to introduce only minor modifications to the exchange energies and spin gap. The changes observed in the exchange constants are consistent with the small drop of ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$ with doping.
