Phosphor-in-glass-film (PiG-F) has been extensively investigated, showing great potential for use in laser lighting technique. Thickness is apparently a key parameter for PiG-F, affecting the heat dissipation, absorption, and reabsorption, thus determining the luminous efficacy and luminescence saturation threshold (LST). Conventional studies suggest that thinner films often have lower thermal load than that of the thicker ones. Unexpectedly, we found that the Lu 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce (LuAG:Ce)-based PiG-F with a moderate thickness (78 μm) yielded the optimal LST of 31.9 W (14.2 W·mm -2 , rather than 28.0 W (12.3 W·mm -2 ) for the thinnest one (56 μm). This unexpected result was further verified by thermal simulations. With the high saturation threshold together with a high luminous efficacy (∼296 lm·W -1 ), an ultrahigh luminous flux of 7178 lm with a luminous exitance of 2930 lm·mm -2 was thus attained. We believe the new, to the best of our knowledge, findings in this study will substantially impact the design principles of phosphors for laser lighting.

This Letter introduces a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method for achieving mode-locking and synchronization of mode-locked output pulses from two lasers. The proposed technique leverages parametric gain from difference frequency generation. Specifically, a Nd:YAG laser is mode-locked by single-pass mode-locked pulses from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser using an intracavity nonlinear crystal. When the continuous-wave laser is not actively pumped, the system functions as a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator. This novel approach has the potential to enable new devices, especially for pump-probe applications or for generation of mode-locked pulses in spectral regions where conventional mode-locked devices are typically not available.

In this Letter, a novel approach for unidirectional operation of a 1064 nm solid-state ring laser is demonstrated based on difference frequency mixing. Unidirectional operation is achieved exploiting the directional parametric gain from a single-pass diode laser, facilitated through a periodically poled LiNbO 3 crystal. In addition to achieving unidirectional operation, the nonlinear process further enables the generation of single-frequency mid-infrared light. Using a single-pass tapered diode laser, tunable in the range from 780 to 815 nm, the generated mid-infrared signal covers the 2.9 to 3.5 µm range while optimizing the phase-match condition of the difference frequency generation process.

Despite the huge advances that have been made in the development of ultra-high luminance laser lighting, achieving high color rendering properties in such systems at the same time remains a challenge. Recent studies show that in most cases, the luminous efficacy (LE) of laser lighting is compromised to improve the color rendering index (CRI). In this study, a possible solution to this problem has been proposed by preparing phosphor-in-glass (PiG) films comprised of the yellow-emitting phosphor (LSN:Ce 3+ ) and the red-emitting phosphor (CASN:Eu 2+ ). The composite material synthesized in this study exhibited outstanding optical and thermal properties. A uniform white light with a high CRI of 80.0 and a high LE of 185.9 lm W -1 was achieved by optimizing the yellow/red ratio and the emission peak position of the blue laser. Furthermore, it was found that this design enabled the phosphor to restrict the light emission area effectively, thus attaining a high luminous exitance of 1302 lm mm -2 . Perseverance's Mastcam-Z instrument provides high-resolution stereo and multispectral images with a unique combination of spatial resolution, spatial coverage, and wavelength coverage along the rover's traverse in Jezero crater, Mars. Images reveal rocks consistent with an igneous (including volcanic and/or volcaniclastic) and/or impactite origin and limited aqueous alteration, including polygonally fractured rocks with weathered coatings; massive boulder-forming bedrock consisting of mafic silicates, ferric oxides, and/or iron-bearing alteration minerals; and coarsely layered outcrops dominated by olivine. Pyroxene dominates the iron-bearing mineralogy in the fine-grained regolith, while olivine dominates the coarse-grained regolith. Solar and atmospheric imaging observations show significant intra- and intersol variations in dust optical depth and water ice clouds, as well as unique examples of boundary layer vortex action from both natural (dust devil) and Ingenuity helicopter-induced dust lifting. High-resolution stereo imaging also provides geologic context for rover operations, other instrument observations, and sample selection, characterization, and confirmation.

As we move through the world, natural and built environments implicitly guide behavior by appealing to certain sensory and motor dynamics. This process can be motivated by automatic attention to environmental features that resonate with specific sensorimotor responses. This review aims at providing a psychobiological framework describing how environmental features can lead to automated sensorimotor responses through defined neurophysiological mechanisms underlying attention. Through the use of automated processes in subsets of cortical structures, the goal of this framework is to describe on a neuronal level the functional link between the designed environment and sensorimotor responses. By distinguishing between environmental features and sensorimotor responses we elaborate on how automatic behavior employs the environment for sensorimotor adaptation. This is realized through a thalamo-cortical network integrating environmental features with motor aspects of behavior. We highlight the underlying transthalamic transmission from an Enactive and predictive perspective and review recent studies that effectively modulated behavior by systematically manipulating environmental features. A speckle-displacement-based wavemeter is combined with a spatial-fundamental-mode-pass filter to eliminate the influence of multimode operation on the directionality of the resulting output from a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) tapered laser. The proposed setup is characterized theoretically and experimentally, and detections of mode hops and side-mode suppression ratios (SMSRs) in the optical output are demonstrated. The laser illuminates a rough surface at an oblique angle, and a camera observes the corresponding speckle pattern from an almost identical back-scattering direction. As the wavelength of the laser shifts, the speckle pattern responds with a corresponding displacement, which is approximately linear with respect to the shift within the detection area. The wavemeter tracks continuously the shifts of the speckles pattern by tracking the peak of the covariance function of sequentially acquired images. In this way, the speckle-displacement-based wavemeter achieves a spectral resolution of 10.4 MHz. Mode hops in the laser do not cause any impeding decorrelation of the speckle patterns. Interestingly, the actual SMSR is related to the peak height and width of the absolute covariance function. A wavemeter, which is capable of measuring wavelengths, mode hops, and SMSRs, is highly useful for spectroscopy, quantum optics, nonlinear frequency conversion, and other applications requiring stable single-frequency laser light, especially when using diode lasers.

The NASA Perseverance rover Mast Camera Zoom (Mastcam-Z) system is a pair of zoomable, focusable, multi-spectral, and color charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras mounted on top of a 1.7 m Remote Sensing Mast, along with associated electronics and two calibration targets. The cameras contain identical optical assemblies that can range in focal length from 26 mm ( 25.5 ∘ × 19.1 ∘ FOV ) to 110 mm ( 6.2 ∘ × 4.2 ∘ FOV ) and will acquire data at pixel scales of 148-540 μm at a range of 2 m and 7.4-27 cm at 1 km. The cameras are mounted on the rover's mast with a stereo baseline of 24.3 ± 0.1  cm and a toe-in angle of 1.17 ± 0.03 ∘ (per camera). Each camera uses a Kodak KAI-2020 CCD with 1600 × 1200 active pixels and an 8 position filter wheel that contains an IR-cutoff filter for color imaging through the detectors' Bayer-pattern filters, a neutral density (ND) solar filter for imaging the sun, and 6 narrow-band geology filters (16 total filters). An associated Digital Electronics Assembly provides command data interfaces to the rover, 11-to-8 bit companding, and JPEG compression capabilities. Herein, we describe pre-flight calibration of the Mastcam-Z instrument and characterize its radiometric and geometric behavior. Between April 26 t h and May 9 t h , 2019, ∼45,000 images were acquired during stand-alone calibration at Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) in San Diego, CA. Additional data were acquired during Assembly Test and Launch Operations (ATLO) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Kennedy Space Center. Results of the radiometric calibration validate a 5% absolute radiometric accuracy when using camera state parameters investigated during testing. When observing using camera state parameters not interrogated during calibration (e.g., non-canonical zoom positions), we conservatively estimate the absolute uncertainty to be < 10 % . Image quality, measured via the amplitude of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) at Nyquist sampling (0.35 line pairs per pixel), shows MTF Nyquist = 0.26 - 0.50 across all zoom, focus, and filter positions, exceeding the > 0.2 design requirement. We discuss lessons learned from calibration and suggest tactical strategies that will optimize the quality of science data acquired during operation at Mars. While most results matched expectations, some surprises were discovered, such as a strong wavelength and temperature dependence on the radiometric coefficients and a scene-dependent dynamic component to the zero-exposure bias frames. One of the major factors that limits the widespread use of ultrafast titanium sapphire (Ti:S) lasers in life science is its expensive and complex pump source. Broad area diode laser (BA-DL) based pump sources have high potential to solve this problem, since they are compact, inexpensive and very efficient. However, their non-diffraction limited beam profile makes it challenging to achieve high powers in Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) operation of Ti:S lasers. In this work, we show that the ideal way to beam shape two spectrally combined BA-DLs with different beam qualities is to aim for a compromise between matching to the cavity mode diameter and the cavity mode Rayleigh range. We furthermore conclude that the relative intensity noise (RIN) of the BA-DL pumped Ti:S laser, another important parameter for imaging applications, is sufficiently low for a wide range of life science applications. However, for applications that are highly sensitive to noise, new laser diode designs are likely necessary to reduce inherent noise originating within the laser diode.

We investigate microsecond pulse-mode operation of a micro-integrated high-power diode laser based on volume Bragg grating external-cavity feedback around 808 nm. The laser system contains a tapered amplifier consisting of a ridge-waveguide section and a tapered section with separated electrical contacts. Thus, the diode laser system can be pulsed by modulating the injected current either to the ridge waveguide section ( I R W ) or to the tapered amplifier section ( I T A ). With a trigger signal of a 50 µs pulse width and a 10 kHz repetition rate, comparing the modulation depth, peak output power, beam propagation factor, and spectral bandwidth, we conclude that the pulse-mode operation achieved by modulating the I T A gives better results than by modulating the I R W due to the decreased thermal effect. At a constant I R W of 0.2 A and a modulated I T A of 6.0 A, 4.3 W of peak output power is obtained with an emission spectral bandwidth with an upper bound of 0.2 nm, and a beam propagation factor in the slow axis, M s l o w 2, of 2.6 (1/ e 2 ). The modulation depth is almost 100%. The results show that the tapered diode laser system may be a good candidate for microsecond pulse-mode solid-state lasers.

In laser lighting, a major benefit over other lighting techniques is the possibility to achieve very high luminous exitance. Focusing the exciting laser to a very small spot size on the phosphor, however, does not necessarily provide a very small emitting area for the white light. In this study we investigate experimentally and numerically the relationship between the white light spot size and the incident blue laser spot size. We show that the specific phosphor material properties have significant impact on this relationship and on the achievable minimum spot size. This constitutes a limitation on the minimum spot size achievable in laser lighting and has important implications in applications.

A novel compact micro-integrated high-power narrow-linewidth external-cavity diode laser around 808 nm is demonstrated. The laser system contains a tapered amplifier consisting of a ridge-waveguide section and a tapered section with separated electrical contacts. Thus, the injection currents to both sections can be controlled independently. An external volume Bragg grating is utilized for spectral narrowing and stabilization. The diode laser system is integrated on a 5 m m ×13 m m aluminum nitride micro-optical bench on a conduction cooled package mount with a footprint of 25 m m ×25 m m . The diode laser system is characterized by measuring the output power and spectrum with the injection currents to the ridge-waveguide section ( I RW ) and tapered amplifier section ( I TA ) changed in steps of 25 and 50 mA, respectively. At I RW =200 m A and I TA =6.0 A , 3.5 W of output power is obtained with an emission spectral linewidth with an upper bound of 6 pm, and a beam propagation factor in the slow axis, M 2 , of 2.6 (1/ e 2 ). The characterization of the temperature stabilization of the laser system shows an increase of the wavelength at a rate of 6.5 pm/K, typical for the applied volume Bragg grating.

We report on a coherent beam combination of three high-brightness tapered amplifiers, which are seeded by a single-frequency laser at λ = 976 nm in a simple architecture with efficiently cooled emitters. The maximal combined power of 12.9 W is achieved at a combining efficiency of > 65%, which is limited by the amplifiers' intrinsic beam quality. The coherent combination cleans up the spatial profile, as the central lobe's power content increases by up to 86%. This high-brightness infrared beam is converted into the visible by second harmonic generation. This results in a high non-linear conversion efficiency of 4.5%/W and a maximum power over 2 W at 488 nm, which is limited by thermal effects in the periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN).

Wavelength information is essential for any researcher in optics and photonics, and for this reason, a wide range of devices is available for measuring it. However, the techniques available today are limited either to a resolution of nanometers or a measurement rate of kHz. In this paper, we present a simple but highly versatile technique based on second-harmonic generation to measure fast wavelength dynamics of laser diodes. We demonstrate a resolution of 0.7 pm and a measurement rate in the MHz range. The measurement rate is limited only by the photodetector, and the wavelength resolution is limited mainly by the length of the nonlinear crystal and the noise of the detectors. The technique can, e.g., be used to investigate the mode-hop behavior of laser diodes during pulsed operation. To demonstrate this, we show the wavelength changes of a laser diode during a single pulse.

We report observations of saturation effects in a Ce:LuAG and Eu-doped nitride ceramic phosphor for conversion of blue laser light for white light generation. The luminous flux from the phosphors material increases linearly with the input power until saturation effects limit the conversion. It is shown that the temperature of the phosphor layer influences the saturation power level and the conversion efficiency. It is also shown that the correlated color temperature (CCT), phosphor conversion efficiency and color rendering index (CRI) are dependent both on the incident power and spot size diameter of the illumination. A phosphor conversion efficiency up to 140.8 lm/W with CRI of 89.4 was achieved. The saturation in a ceramic phosphor, when illuminated by high intensity laser diodes, is estimated to play the main role in limiting the available luminance from laser-based lighting systems., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Power modulated visible lasers are interesting for a number of applications within areas such as laser displays and medical laser treatments. In this paper, we present a system for modulating the second-harmonic light generated by single-pass frequency doubling of a distributed feedback (DFB) master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser diode with separate electrical contacts for the MO and the PA. A modulation depth in excess of 97% from 0.1 Hz to 10 kHz is demonstrated. This is done by wavelength tuning of the laser diode using only a 40 mA adjustment of the current through the MO. The bandwidth of the modulation is limited by the electronics. This method has the potential to decrease the size as well as cost of modulated visible lasers. The achievable optical powers will increase as DFB MOPAs are further developed.

Watt-level yellow emitting lasers are interesting for medical applications, due to their high hemoglobin absorption, and for efficient detection of certain fluorophores. In this paper, we demonstrate a compact and robust diode-based laser system in the yellow spectral range. The system generates 1.9 W of single-frequency light at 562.4 nm by cascaded single-pass frequency doubling of the 1124.8 nm emission from a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) tapered laser diode. The absence of a free-space cavity makes the system stable over a base-plate temperature range of 30 K. At the same time, the use of a laser diode enables the modulation of the pump wavelength by controlling the drive current. This is utilized to achieve a power modulation depth above 90% for the second harmonic light, with a rise time below 40  μs.

A 480 mW green tunable diode laser system is demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. The laser system is based on a GaN broad-area diode laser and Littrow external-cavity feedback. The green laser system is operated in two modes by switching the polarization direction of the laser beam incident on the grating. When the laser beam is p-polarized, an output power of 50 mW with a tunable range of 9.2 nm is achieved. When the laser beam is s-polarized, an output power of 480 mW with a tunable range of 2.1 nm is obtained. This constitutes the highest output power from a tunable green diode laser system.

In this paper we discuss how different feedback gratings affect the tuning range and the output power of external feedback diode laser systems. A tunable high-power narrow-spectrum external-cavity diode laser system around 455 nm is investigated. The laser system is based on a high-power GaN diode laser in a Littrow external-cavity. Both a holographic diffraction grating and a ruled diffraction grating are used as feedback elements in the external cavity. The output power, spectral bandwidth, and tunable range of the external cavity diode laser system are measured and compared with the two gratings at different injected currents. When the holographic grating is used, the laser system can be tuned over a range of 1.4 nm with an output power around 530 mW. When the ruled grating is used, the laser system can be tuned over a range of 6.0 nm with an output power around 80 mW. The results can be used as a guide for selecting gratings for external-cavity diode lasers for different requirements.

The cascading of nonlinear crystals has been established as a simple method to greatly increase the conversion efficiency of single-pass second-harmonic generation compared to a single-crystal scheme. Here, we show for the first time that the technique can be extended to sum frequency generation, despite differences in the phase relations of the involved fields. An unprecedented 5.5 W of continuous-wave diffraction-limited green light is generated from the single-pass sum frequency mixing of two diode lasers in two periodically poled nonlinear crystals (conversion efficiency 50%). The technique is generally applicable and can be applied to any combination of fundamental wavelengths and nonlinear crystals.

Within the field of high-power second harmonic generation (SHG), power scaling is often hindered by adverse crystal effects such as thermal dephasing arising from the second harmonic (SH) light, which imposes limits on the power that can be generated in many crystals. Here we demonstrate a concept for efficient power scaling of single-pass SHG beyond such limits using a cascade of nonlinear crystals, in which the first crystal is chosen for high nonlinear efficiency and the subsequent crystal(s) are chosen for power handling ability. Using this highly efficient single-pass concept, we generate 3.7 W of continuous-wave diffraction-limited (M(2)=1.25) light at 532 nm from 9.5 W of non-diffraction-limited (M(2)=7.7) light from a tapered laser diode, while avoiding significant thermal effects. Besides constituting the highest SH power yet achieved using a laser diode, this demonstrates that the concept successfully combines the high efficiency of the first stage with the good power handling properties of the subsequent stages. The concept is generally applicable and can be expanded with more stages to obtain even higher efficiency, and extends also to other combinations of nonlinear media suitable for other wavelengths.

We demonstrate an optical coherence tomography device that simultaneously combines different novel ultrabroad bandwidth light sources centered in the 800 and 1060 nm regions, operating at 66 kHz depth scan rate, and a confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscope-based eye tracker to permit motion-artifact-free, ultrahigh resolution and high contrast retinal and choroidal imaging. The two wavelengths of the device provide the complementary information needed for diagnosis of subtle retinal changes, while also increasing visibility of deeper-lying layers to image pathologies that include opaque media in the anterior eye segment or eyes with increased choroidal thickness.

We have accomplished deep tissue optical imaging of upconverting nanoparticles at 800 nm, using millisecond single pulse excitation with high peak power. This is achieved by carefully choosing the pulse parameters, derived from time-resolved rate-equation analysis, which result in higher intrinsic quantum yield that is utilized by upconverting nanoparticles for generating this near infrared upconversion emission. The pulsed excitation approach thus promises previously unreachable imaging depths and shorter data acquisition times compared with continuous wave excitation, while simultaneously keeping the possible thermal side-effects of the excitation light moderate. These key results facilitate means to break through the general shallow depth limit of upconverting-nanoparticle-based fluorescence techniques, necessary for a range of biomedical applications, including diffuse optical imaging, photodynamic therapy and remote activation of biomolecules in deep tissues.

We report the realization of a tapered diode laser operated in a coupled ring cavity that significantly improves the coherence properties of the tapered laser and efficiently generates tunable light at the second harmonic frequency. The tapered diode laser is tunable with single-frequency output in the broad wavelength range from 1049 nm to 1093 nm and the beam propagation factor is improved from M(2) = 2.8 to below 1.1. The laser frequency is automatically locked to the cavity resonance frequency using optical feedback. Furthermore, we show that this adaptive external cavity approach leads to efficient frequency doubling. More than 500 mW green output power is obtained by placing a periodically poled LiNbO(3) crystal in the external cavity. The single frequency green output from the laser system is tunable in the 530 nm to 533 nm range limited by the LiNbO(3) crystal. The optical to optical conversion efficiency exceeds 30%.

We demonstrate a new type of anisotropy in thin films of amorphous azobenzene polymers induced between 570 and 633 nm, where the absorbance in the film is on the order of 0.05. The anisotropy has a pronounced radial contribution. This observation points to an additional mechanism for the alignment of azobenzene molecules.

In order to increase the power of visible diode laser systems in an efficient manner, we propose spectral beam combining with subsequent sum-frequency generation. We show that this approach, in comparison with second harmonic generation of single emitters, can enhance the available power significantly. By combining two distributed Bragg reflector tapered diode lasers we achieve a 2.5-3.2 fold increase in power and a maximum of 3.9 W of diffraction-limited green light. At this power level, green diode laser systems have a high application potential, e.g., within the biomedical field. Our concept can be expanded combining multiple diode lasers to increase the power even further.

Background: The human lens is continuously exposed to high levels of light. Ultraviolet radiation is believed to play a causative role in the development of cataract. In vivo, however, the lens is mainly exposed to visible light and the ageing lens absorbs a great part of the short wavelength region of incoming visible light. The aim of the present study was to examine the optical effects on human lenses of short wavelength visible light and ultraviolet radiation., Methods: Naturally aged human donor lenses were irradiated with UVA (355 nm), violet (400 and 405 nm) and green (532 nm) lasers. The effect of irradiation was evaluated qualitatively by photography and quantitatively by measuring the direct transmission before and after irradiation. Furthermore, the effect of pulsed and continuous laser systems was compared as was the effect of short, intermediate and prolonged exposures., Results: Irradiation with high intensity lasers caused scattering lesions in the human lenses. These effects were more likely to be seen when using pulsed lasers because of the high pulse intensity. Prolonged irradiation with UVA led to photodarkening whereas no detrimental effects were observed after irradiation with visible light., Conclusions: Irradiation with visible light does not seem to be harmful to the human lens except if the lens is exposed to laser irradiances that are high enough to warrant thermal protein denaturation that is more readily seen using pulsed laser systems.

Tunable dual-wavelength operation of a diode laser system based on a tapered diode amplifier with double-Littrow external-cavity feedback is demonstrated around 800 nm. The two wavelengths can be tuned individually, and the frequency difference of the two wavelengths is tunable from 0.5 to 5.0 THz. An output power of 1.54 W is achieved with a frequency difference of 0.86 THz, the output power is higher than 1.3 W in the 5.0 THz range of frequency difference, and the amplified spontaneous emission intensity is more than 20 dB suppressed in the range of frequency difference. For the first time a single-pass frequency doubled DBR-tapered diode laser suitable for pumping Ti:sapphire lasers generating ultrashort pulses is demonstrated. The maximum output powers achieved when pumping the Ti:sapphire laser are 110 mW (CW) and 82 mW (mode-locked) respectively at 1.2 W of pump power. This corresponds to a reduction in optical conversion efficiencies to 75% of the values achieved with a commercial diode pumped solid-state laser. However, the superior electro-optical efficiency of the diode laser improves the overall efficiency of the Ti:sapphire laser by a factor > 2. The optical spectrum emitted by the Ti:sapphire laser when pumped with our diode laser shows a spectral width of 112 nm (FWHM). Based on autocorrelation measurements, pulse widths of less than 20 fs can therefore be expected.

Relative timing jitter between synchronized Q-switched lasers, or lack thereof, is important for stable sum-frequency generation. Experimental investigation of two passively synchronized lasers shows that the jitter is minimized when the free-running repetition rates of the two lasers are close to, but not exactly, matching. When the free-running repetition rates are matched, the jitter is significantly large. At the best operating point, the pulse-to-pulse period was 200 μs, while the relative jitter between the two lasers was 9 ns. If the effect of the master laser's pulse-to-pulse jitter is removed, the residual timing jitter between the two lasers was 6 ns, which corresponds to the lower limit set by pump power fluctuations and noise from spontaneous emission.

We demonstrate two different schemes for the spectral narrowing of a 12 emitter 980 nm gain guided tapered diode laser bar. In the first scheme, a reflective grating has been used in a Littman Metcalf configuration and the wavelength of the laser emission could be narrowed down from more than 5.5 nm in the free running mode to 0.04 nm (FWHM) at an operating current of 30 A with an output power of 8 W. The spectrum was found to be tunable within a range of 16 nm. In the second scheme, a volume Bragg grating has been used to narrow the wavelength of the laser bar from over 5 nm to less than 0.2 nm with an output of 5 W at 20 A. To our knowledge, this is the first time spectral narrowing has been performed on a gain guided tapered diode laser bar. In the Littman Metcalf configuration, the spectral brightness has been increased by 86 times and in the volume Bragg grating cavity the spectral brightness has been improved over 18 times when compared to the free running operation. These schemes could be also extended for other wavelengths of interest in the future.

Up to 16 W output power has been obtained using spectral beam combining of two 1063 nm DBR-tapered diode lasers. Using a reflecting volume Bragg grating, a combining efficiency as high as 93.7% is achieved, resulting in a single beam with high spatial coherence. The result represents the highest output power achieved by spectral beam combining of two single element tapered diode lasers. Since spectral beam combining does not affect beam propagation parameters, M2-values of 1.8 (fast axis) and 3.3 (slow axis) match the M2-values of the laser with lowest spatial coherence. The principle of spectral beam combining used in our experiments can be expanded to combine more than two tapered diode lasers and hence it is expected that the output power may be increased even further in the future.

High-power narrow-spectrum diode laser systems based on tapered gain media in an external cavity are demonstrated at 675 nm. Two 2 mm long amplifiers are used, one with a 500 μm long ridge-waveguide section (device A), the other with a 750 μm long ridge-waveguide section (device B). Laser system A based on device A is tunable from 663 to 684 nm with output power higher than 0.55 W in the tuning range; as high as 1.25 W output power is obtained at 675.34 nm. The emission spectral bandwidth is less than 0.05 nm throughout the tuning range, and the beam quality factor M(2) is 2.07 at an output power of 1.0 W. Laser system B based on device B is tunable from 666 to 685 nm. As high as 1.05 W output power is obtained around 675.67 nm. The emission spectral bandwidth is less than 0.07 nm throughout the tuning range, and the beam quality factor M(2) is 1.13 at an output power of 0.93 W. Laser system B is used as a pump source for the generation of 337.6 nm UV light by single-pass frequency doubling in a bismuth triborate (BIBO) crystal. An output power of 109 μW UV light, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 0.026% W(-1), is attained.

Using an all passive approach, synchronized Q-switching of two Nd:YAG lasers, at 946 nm and 1064 nm, is reported. Two laser crystals are used to avoid gain competition, and stable operation is reported for the first time. The pulse trains are synchronized over a wide range of pump powers and a relative timing jitter of 36 ns is achieved. A minimum delay of 64 ns is observed between the two laser pulses, and by making the 946 nm pulse relatively long, a 79% temporal overlap is obtained when compared to the zero-delay scenario.

While swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the 1050 nm range is promising for retinal imaging, there are certain challenges. Conventional semiconductor gain media have limited output power, and the performance of high-speed Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) lasers suffers from chromatic dispersion in standard optical fiber. We developed a novel light source with a tapered amplifier as gain medium, and investigated the FDML performance comparing two fiber delay lines with different dispersion properties. We introduced an additional gain element into the resonator, and thereby achieved stable FDML operation, exploiting the full bandwidth of the tapered amplifier despite high dispersion. The light source operates at a repetition rate of 116 kHz with an effective average output power in excess of 30 mW. With a total sweep range of 70 nm, we achieved an axial resolution of 15 microm in air (approximately 11 microm in tissue) in OCT measurements. As our work shows, tapered amplifiers are suitable gain media for swept sources at 1050 nm with increased output power, while high gain counteracts dispersion effects in an FDML laser.

We demonstrate spectral beam combining of a 980 nm tapered diode laser bar. The combined beam from 12 tapered emitters on the bar yielded an output power of 9.3 W at 30 A of operating current. An M2 value of 5.3 has been achieved along the slow axis. This value is close to that of a free running single tapered emitter on the bar at the same current level. The overall spectral beam combining efficiency was measured to be 63%.

More than 1.5 W of green light at 531 nm is generated by single-pass second harmonic generation in periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3. The pump laser is a high power tapered laser with a distributed Bragg reflector etched in the ridge section of the laser to provide wavelength selectivity. The output power of the single-frequency tapered laser is 9.3 W in continuous wave operation. A conversion efficiency of 18.5 % was achieved in the experiments.

We demonstrate off-axis spectral beam combining applied to a 980 nm high power broad area diode laser bar. The experiments yielded 9 W of optical power at 30 A of operating current and the measured M2 values of the combined beam from 12 emitters were 1.9 and 6.4 for the fast and the slow axis, respectively. The slow axis beam quality was 5-6 times better than the value obtained from a single emitter in free running mode. A high brightness of 79 MW/cm2-str was achieved using this configuration. To our knowledge, this is the highest brightness level ever achieved from a broad area diode laser bar.

We present results on a 404 nm laser system based on second harmonic generation in a new compact external cavity configuration. We obtain a stable 318 mW cw diffraction limited output from the system with a mode-matched pump power of 630 mW. We observe up to 620 mW SHG, when the cavity is operating in scanning mode. The pump source is an external cavity grating feedback tapered diode laser operating at 808 nm. We find that thermal effects in the nonlinear crystal severely limit the efficiency of the setup with high input powers.

A high-power narrow-linewidth laser system based on a tapered semiconductor optical amplifier in external cavity is demonstrated. The external cavity laser system uses a new tapered amplifier with a super-large optical-cavity (SLOC) design that leads to improved performance of the external cavity diode lasers. The laser system is tunable over a 29 nm range centered at 802 nm. As high as 1.95 W output power is obtained at 803.84 nm, and an output power above 1.5 W is achieved from 793 to 812 nm at operating current of 3.0 A. The emission linewidth is below 0.004 nm and the beam quality factor M2 is below 1.3 over the 29 nm tunable range. As an example of application, the laser system is used as a pump source for the generation of 405 nm blue light by single-pass frequency doubling in a periodically poled KTiOPO4. An output power of 24 mW at 405 nm, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 0.83%/W is attained.

Two male patients with severe reversible muscle weakness and excessive potassium deficiency associated with alkalosis during treatment with diuretics are presented. The case reports are further illustrated by the morphologic changes as seen in light and electron microscopic examination of muscle biopsies. Hypokalemia and muscle dysfunction are discussed in relation to other investigations of altered potassium metabolism and myopathy during treatment with certain diuretics.
