Abstract

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. It ensures the consistency of physics models across a variety of experiments.

14. Reordering between tetrahedral and octahedral sites in ultrathin magnetite films grown on MgO(001).

Abstract

Magnetite ultrathin films were grown using different deposition rates and substrate temperatures. The structure of these films was studied using (grazing incidence) x-ray diffraction, while their surface structure was characterized by low energy electron diffraction. In addition to that, we performed x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magneto optic Kerr effect measurements to probe the stoichiometry of the films as well as their magnetic properties. The diffraction peaks of the inverse spinel structure, which originate exclusively from Fe ions on tetrahedral sites are strongly affected by the preparation conditions, while the octahedral sites remain almost unchanged. With both decreasing deposition rate as well as decreasing substrate temperature, the integrated intensity of the diffraction peaks originating exclusively from Fe on tetrahedral sites is decreasing. We propose that the ions usually occupying tetrahedral sites in magnetite are relocated to octahedral vacancies. Ferrimagnetic behaviour is only observed for well ordered magnetite films. Abstract

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 947-950, A very costly and thus important step in the solar cell production of crystalline silicon solar cells is the cutting of wafers. The standard technique is the multi-wire sawing with abrasive SiC slurries. To reduce the costs wafers will be cut thinner in the future to increase throughput and save raw materials. On the other hand the wafer surface has to maintain at a very good level to prevent wafer breakage. Experiments for fast determination of the sawing performance of different slurries were carried out using a lapping machine. Due to the same material removal mechanism as in slurry sawing the results can be compared well. In this investigation the influence of the particle size distribution and the particle shape on the material removal rate and surface roughness is studied. Special attention is paid to the question, which particle fraction in a particle size distribution mainly affects the material removal rate. Grits with an increased amount of a fine fraction and grits with additional coarser particles were tested and compared to each other.
