Abstract

One of the uncertainties in interpretation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data comes from the hadronic interaction models used for air shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The number of muons observed at the ground from UHECR-induced air showers is expected to depend upon the hadronic interaction model. One may therefore test the hadronic interaction models by comparing the measured number of muons with the MC prediction. In this paper, we present the results of studies of muon densities in UHE extensive air showers obtained by analyzing the signal of surface detector stations which should have high $\it{muon \, purity}$. The muon purity of a station will depend on both the inclination of the shower and the relative position of the station. In 7 years' data from the Telescope Array experiment, we find that the number of particles observed for signals with an expected muon purity of $\sim$65% at a lateral distance of 2000 m from the shower core is $1.72 \pm 0.10{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.37 {\rm (syst.)}$ times larger than the MC prediction value using the QGSJET II-03 model for proton-induced showers. A similar effect is also seen in comparisons with other hadronic models such as QGSJET II-04, which shows a $1.67 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.36$ excess. We also studied the dependence of these excesses on lateral distances and found a slower decrease of the lateral distribution of muons in the data as compared to the MC, causing larger discrepancy at larger lateral distances.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum by the Telescope Array Low-Energy Extension (TALE) air fluorescence detector. The TALE air fluorescence detector is also sensitive to the Cherenkov light produced by shower particles. Low energy cosmic rays, in the PeV energy range, are detectable by TALE as "Cherenkov Events". Using these events, we measure the energy spectrum from a low energy of $\sim 2$ PeV to an energy greater than 100 PeV. Above 100 PeV TALE can detect cosmic rays using air fluorescence. This allows for the extension of the measurement to energies greater than a few EeV. In this paper, we will describe the detector, explain the technique, and present results from a measurement of the spectrum using $\sim 1000$ hours of observation. The observed spectrum shows a clear steepening near $10^{17.1}$ eV, along with an ankle-like structure at $10^{16.2}$ eV. These features present important constraints on galactic cosmic rays origin and propagation models. Abstract

An intermediate-scale energy spectrum anisotropy has been found in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays of energies above $10^{19.2}$ eV in the northern hemisphere, using 7 years of data from the Telescope Array surface detector. A relative energy distribution test is done comparing events inside oversampled spherical caps of equal exposure, to those outside, using the Poisson likelihood ratio. The center of maximum significance is at $9^h$$16^m$, $45^{\circ}$. and has a deficit of events with energies $10^{19.2}$$\leq$$E$$<$$10^{19.75}$ eV and an excess for $E$$\geq$$10^{19.75}$ eV. The post-trial probability of this energy anisotropy, appearing by chance anywhere on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be $9$$\times$$10^{-5}$ ($3.74$$\sigma_{global}$).

Abstract

The Telescope Array observatory utilizes fluorescence detectors and surface detectors to observe air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere. Cosmic ray events observed in this way are termed hybrid data. The depth of air shower maximum is related to the mass of the primary particle that generates the shower. This paper reports on shower maxima data collected over 8.5 years using the Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors in conjunction with the array of surface detectors. We compare the means and standard deviations of the observed $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions with Monte Carlo $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions of unmixed protons, helium, nitrogen, and iron, all generated using the QGSJet~II-04 hadronic model. We also perform an unbinned maximum likelihood test of the observed data, which is subjected to variable systematic shifting of the data $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distributions to allow us to test the full distributions, and compare them to the Monte Carlo to see which elements are not compatible with the observed data. For all energy bins, QGSJet~II-04 protons are found to be compatible with Telescope Array hybrid data at the 95% confidence level after some systematic $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ shifting of the data. Three other QGSJet~II-04 elements are found to be compatible using the same test procedure in an energy range limited to the highest energies where data statistics are sparse., Comment: 39 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables, published in The Astrophysical Journal. 14. Laparoscopic colopexy for recurrent rectal prolapse in a Maltese dog

Abstract

A 2.5-kg castrated male Maltese dog, suspected to be older than 10 y, was presented with a prolapsed mass at the anus. This had occurred on 2 previous occasions within the last 4 mo and had been managed with manual reduction and purse-string sutures. The rectal prolapse had viable tissue and was reducible but resulted in straining and fecal accumulation. Colopexy (with intracorporeal sutures) was performed laparoscopically using 3 ports; the distal colon was retracted cranially and attached to the abdominal wall with 3 simple interrupted sutures in a single row. The dog recovered uneventfully, had good appetite and normal activity, did not strain, and defecated without issues. There were no wound-healing complications and at 12-month post-operative examination, the patient was in good condition without clinical signs. Based on this case report, laparoscopic colopexy is clinically practical for management of rectal prolapse in small-breed dogs.

Abstract

Alginic acid is a polysaccharide obtained from brown algae, and its oligosaccharide has various functions such as antiviral, antitumor, immunoregulation, and antioxidant. However, because of its high viscosity, numerous studies have degraded the alginic acid by enzymes to improve its utilisation. In the present work, we characterised Sargassum fulvellum enzymatic extract (SFEE) using polysaccharide-degrading enzyme obtained from Shewanella oneidensis PKA 1008, and investigated its anti-inflammatory potential. S. fulvellum powder and crude enzyme were mixed at a ratio of 1:1 (v/v), and reacted at 30°C for 0 - 48 h to obtain the optimum degrading time. The changes in pH, colour, reducing sugar, and viscosity of SFEE were determined. The anti-inflammatory activity of SFEE was confirmed by measuring the expression level of nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-a, and L-1ß) in RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line. The reducing sugar content was found to increase 2.75-fold at 24 h as compared to that at the initial reaction point, but pH and viscosity decreased significantly with increasing reaction time. SFEE showed a high inhibitory effect on the levels of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines. SFEE thus has great potential for development as a functional food and therapeutic material owing to its anti-inflammatory effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mg-doped p-type GaN epilayers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition exhibit two different types of photoluminescence (PL) characteristics depending on Mg doping rate; the existence of critical Mg concentration is found where both electrical and optical characteristics show an abrupt change in their behavior. In samples with relatively low Mg concentration, a band edge emission, a peak associated with shallow donor-acceptor pair recombination, and a 2.8 eV blue band emission appear in the PL spectrum. Intensities of all three PL peaks decrease with increasing annealing temperature; the blue band quenches most rapidly. In contrast, in samples grown with high ratio of Mg/Ga flow rate, only a strong blue emission band is observed and the intensity of the blue band increases with the annealing temperature suggesting a different origin from the blue band of lightly doped samples. From the annealing temperature dependence of the blue band intensity, we speculate that the emission mechanism of the blue band in relatively lightly Mg-doped GaN epilayers involves Mg-related deep level complexes such as substitutional/interstitial Mg-related complexes. On the other hand, a model involving a formation of pyramidal defects and the presence of Mg-rich inclusions which modifies the dominant optical transition can be a possible explanation for the origin of the blue band in heavily doped ones. Abstract

The relationship between roasting temperature and time on the antioxidant activity of extract from defatted sesame meal is determined. Roasting at 200 degrees C for 60 min can obtain highest antioxidant activity from defatted sesame meal extracts and it is highly effective in converting insoluble phenolic compounds to soluble forms.

Abstract

Achieving high workpiece accuracy is a long-term goal of machine tool designers. There are many causes of workpiece inaccuracy, with thermal errors being the most dominant. Indirect compensation (using predictive models) is a promising strategy to reduce thermal errors without increasing machine tool costs. A modelling approach using thermal transfer functions (a dynamic method with a physical basis) has the potential to deal with the issue. The method does not require any intervention into the machine tool structure and its modelling and calculation speed are suitable for real-time applications with results of up to 80% thermal error reduction. Compensation models for machine tool thermal errors based on transfer functions (TFs) were successfully applied on various kinds of single-purpose machines (milling, turning, floor-type, etc.) and implemented directly into various control systems. The aim of this research is to prove the compensation model applicability within the real machining conditions whereas the most of known thermal errors models end up with offline verification of their approximation quality. The introduced model of a milling centre operates in two machining directions Y and Z and describes thermal errors caused by spindle speed, feed drives and ambient temperature influences. The model is implemented into machine tool control system (Fanuc FS31i-B5). The real-time verification upon finishing cutting operation and conditions different from model calibration is discussed in more detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
