Abstract Introduction The adoption of tethered mobile personal health records provides not only medical information to patients but also various convenience functions related to hospital use, thereby increasing accessibility to healthcare services and promoting patient engagement. We analyse the tethered mobile personal health records app’s usage logs to determine how it can contribute to improving medical service accessibility and patient engagement. Methods Log data, that comprised menu type, log time, and date, were collected from the mobile personal health records app of a tertiary referral hospital. Clinical information, including patients’ demographics and visit type, was collected from the clinical research warehouse system. The usage log was analysed in terms of the type of visit, service function, and time period. Results Outpatients accounted for 34% of the total app usage and was the most app-accessed visit type. The most utilized menu functions were lab test and visit schedule for visits or non-visits. For Inpatient and Health check-ups, menu usage patterns showed a focus on lab test results. While investigations and other menu usage showed double peaks in the morning and afternoon, peak usage of lab test results correlated with inpatient blood sampling times, which was around 9 am. Discussion App menus to access health information, particularly blood tests, emerged as the most accessed menu. Hence, when compared with blood sampling times and hospital information system usage patterns, encounters occurring in the hospital majorly impacted patient app use. For improved patient engagement, improving lab test function should be the priority.

Abstract The Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) belongs to the Actinopterygii class, and the suborder Notothenioidei, which lives in cold waters in the Southern Hemisphere. We performed assembly and annotation, and we integrated the Illumina short-read sequencing for polishinng, PacBio long-read sequencing for contig-level assembly, and Hi-C sequencing technology to obtain high-quality of chromosome-level genome assembly. The final assembly analysis resulted in a total of 495 scaffolds, a genome size of 844.7 Mbp and an N50 length of 36 Mbp. Among these data, we confirmed 24 scaffolds exceeded 10 Mbp and classified as chromosome-level. The completeness of BUSCO rate was over 97%. A total gene set of 32,224 was identified. Furthermore, we analyzed the presence of AFGP genes, classified into Antarctic and sub-Antarctic categories through phylogenetic analysis. This study provides a useful resource for the genomic analysis of Patagonian toothfish and genetic insights into the comparison with Antarctic fishes.

Abstract Histone lysine methylation is pivotal in shaping the epigenetic landscape and is linked to cell physiology. Coordination of the activities of multiple histone lysine methylation modifiers, namely, methyltransferases and demethylases, modulates chromatin structure and dynamically alters the epigenetic landscape, orchestrating almost all DNA-templated processes, such as transcription, DNA replication, and DNA repair. The stability of modifier proteins, which is regulated by protein degradation, is crucial for their activity. Here, we review the current knowledge of modifier-protein degradation via specific pathways and its subsequent impact on cell physiology through epigenetic changes. By summarizing the functional links between the aberrant stability of modifier proteins and human diseases and highlighting efforts to target protein stability for therapeutic purposes, we aim to promote interest in defining novel pathways that regulate the degradation of modifiers and ultimately increase the potential for the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

In this paper, we proposed a stochastic volatility model in which the volatility was given by stochastic processes representing two characteristic time scales of variation driven by approximate fractional Brownian motions with two Hurst exponents. We obtained an approximate closed-form formula for a European vanilla option price and the corresponding implied volatility formula based on singular and regular perturbations and a Mellin transform. The explicit formula for the implied volatility allowed us to find the slope of the implied volatility skew with respect to the Hurst exponent and time-to-maturity. The proposed model allows the market volatility behavior to be captured uniformly in time-to-maturity. We conducted an empirical analysis to find the validity of the proposed model by comparing it with other models and Monte Carlo simulation. Further, we extended the pricing result for the vanilla option to two path-dependent exotic (barrier and lookback) options and obtained the corresponding price formulas explicitly.

Behavioral sensitization is defined as the heightened and persistent behavioral response to repeated drug exposure as a manifestation of drug craving. Psychomotor stimulants such as cocaine can induce strong behavioral sensitization. In this study, we explored the effects of optogenetic stimulation of the prelimbic (PL) to the nucleus accumbnes (NAc) core on the expression of cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization. Using wireless optogenetics, we selectively stimulated the PL-NAc core circuit, and assessed the effects of this treatment on cocaine-induced locomotor activity and accompanying changes in neuronal activation and dendritic spine density. Our findings revealed that optogenetic stimulation of the PL-NAc core circuit effectively suppressed the cocaine-induced locomotor sensitization, accompanied by a reduction in c-Fos expression within the NAc core. Moreover, optogenetic stimulation led to reduction in dendritic spine density, particularly thin and mushroom spine densities, in the NAc core. This study demonstrates that cocaine-induced locomotor sensitization can be regulated by optogenetic stimulation of the PL-NAc core circuit, providing insights into the crucial role of this circuit in psychomotor stimulant addiction.

Abstract The potential role of the ghrelin receptor, also known as the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), within the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in regulating drug addiction and feeding has been documented; however, the pattern of its expression in this site remains elusive. In this study, we characterized the expression patterns of GHSR1a and 1b, two subtypes of GHSRs, within the NAcc of the rat brain by immunohistochemistry. We visually detected GHSR signals, for the first time, at the protein level in the NAcc in which they were mostly expressed in neurons including both medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and non-MSNs. Furthermore, GHSR1a was found expressed as localized near the cellular membrane or some in the cytoplasm, whereas GHSR1b expressed solely throughout the large cytoplasmic area. The existence and subcellular expression pattern of GHSRs in the NAcc identified in this study will contribute to improving our understanding about the role of GHSR-mediated neurosignaling in feeding and drug addiction.

Abstract CMOS-RRAM integration holds great promise for low energy and high throughput neuromorphic computing. However, most RRAM technologies relying on filamentary switching suffer from variations and noise, leading to computational accuracy loss, increased energy consumption, and overhead by expensive program and verify schemes. We developed a filament-free, bulk switching RRAM technology to address these challenges. We systematically engineered a trilayer metal-oxide stack and investigated the switching characteristics of RRAM with varying thicknesses and oxygen vacancy distributions to achieve reliable bulk switching without any filament formation. We demonstrated bulk switching at megaohm regime with high current nonlinearity, up to 100 levels without compliance current. We developed a neuromorphic compute-in-memory platform and showcased edge computing by implementing a spiking neural network for an autonomous navigation/racing task. Our work addresses challenges posed by existing RRAM technologies and paves the way for neuromorphic computing at the edge under strict size, weight, and power constraints.

AbstractThe mitogenome of Euphausia crystallorophias collected from the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area (RSR MPA) is described for the first time. The assembled mitogenome was 17,291 bp in length and consisted of two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and noncoding regions, all of which were identical to those of other euphausiid species. The most common start codon for the 13 PCGs was ATG, and the most common termination codon was TAA. The overall G + C content was 33.2% in the heavy strand. Euphausia crystallorophias was sister to E. superba in the phylogenetic analysis. The mitogenome of E. crystallorophias provided significant DNA molecular data for further identification and phylogenetic analysis within the euphausiids.

Abstract The underwater soundscape was recorded in Seaview Bay off Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea region Marine protected area, for 3 days in December 2021. Leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx vocalizations were a prominent sound source that led to variations in ambient sound pressure levels in a frequency range of approximately 150–4500 Hz. Among the 14 call types previously identified, except ultrasound vocalizations, six types of broadcast calls were classified, and their acoustic characteristics were analyzed. We focused on the acoustic characteristics of four low‐frequency calls, clustered in a relatively narrow bandwidth, which have been relatively less studied. We identified a new call type of a triple ascending trill consisting of three trill parts, expanding upon the findings of previous studies. The audio data extracted from leopard seal vocalization videos, recorded by a monitoring camera on sea ice, enhanced the reliability of identifications of the underwater triple ascending trill. We present the unique results of underwater passive acoustic monitoring conducted at Seaview Bay, designated as Antarctic Specially Protected Area No 178. Our results could contribute to the development of detection and localization algorithms for leopard seal vocalizations and can be used as fundamental data for studies related to the vocalization and behavior of this species.

A fully depleted silicon‐on‐insulator (FDSOI) metal‐oxide‐semiconductor field‐effect transistors (MOSFETs) device is investigated as for an electronic synapse emulating the synaptic functions of the human brain with stable characteristics. Gate‐last processed FDSOI MOSFET with a high‐k/metal gate stack features a memory window of 103. Synaptic conductance is stably regulated by utilizing the FDSOI MOSFET, which offers the advantage of mitigating leakage current when compared to bulk Si MOSFET. Short‐ and long‐term plasticity are investigated by applying engineered pulse, verifying the long‐term synaptic properties of pattern recognition processes. With controllable synaptic conductance, the trade‐off between conductance change and linearity regarding the recognition rate is evaluated, attaining a recognition rate of 0.83. To verify the pre‐ and post‐synaptic weights within a real hardware‐based neuromorphic system, 5 × 6 FDSOI field‐effect transistor (FET) synapse array is interconnected to 10 × 10 leaky integrate‐and‐fire (LIF) neuron array. The synaptic plasticity of FDSOI MOSFET in post‐neurons following neuron firing in the neuron device is successfully demonstrated. These results indicate that FDSOI MOSFET devices could be applicable as synapse devices due to controllability and capability to realize signal transmissions and self‐learning processes simultaneously and used to mimic a synapse neuron network system by configuring a hardware system interconnected with the LIF neuron.

Abstract The Antarctic whitefin plunderfish Pogonophryne albipinna belongs to the family Artedidraconidae, a key component of Antarctic benthic ecosystems within the order Perciformes and the suborder Notothenioidei. While genome research on P. albipinna using short-read sequencing is available, high-quality genome assembly and annotation employing long-read sequencing have yet to be performed. This study presents a chromosome-scale genome assembly and annotation for P. albipinna, utilizing a combination of Illumina short-read, PacBio long-read, and Hi-C sequencing technologies. The resulting genome assembly spans approximately 1.07 Gb, with a longest scaffold measuring 59.39 Mb and an N50 length of 41.76 Mb. Of the 1,111 Hi-C scaffolds, 23 exceeded 10 Mb and were thus classified as chromosome-level. BUSCO completeness was assessed at 95.6%. The assembled genome comprises 50.68% repeat sequences, and a total of 31,128 protein-coding genes were predicted. This study will enhance our understanding of the genomic characteristics of cryonotothenioids and facilitate comparative analyses of their adaptation and evolution in extreme environments.

Abstract The CRISPR–Cas9 system is a widely used gene-editing tool, offering unprecedented opportunities for treating various diseases. Controlling Cas9/dCas9 activity at specific location and time to avoid undesirable effects is very important. Here, we report a conditionally active CRISPR–Cas9 system that regulates target gene expression upon sensing cellular environmental change. We conjugated the oxygen-sensing transcription activation domain (TAD) of hypoxia-inducing factor (HIF-1α) with the Cas9/dCas9 protein. The Cas9-TAD conjugate significantly increased endogenous target gene cleavage under hypoxic conditions compared with that under normoxic conditions, whereas the dCas9-TAD conjugate upregulated endogenous gene transcription. Furthermore, the conjugate system effectively downregulated the expression of SNAIL, an essential gene in cancer metastasis, and upregulated the expression of the tumour-related genes HNF4 and NEUROD1 under hypoxic conditions. Since hypoxia is closely associated with cancer, the hypoxia-dependent Cas9/dCas9 system is a novel addition to the molecular tool kit that functions in response to cellular signals and has potential application for gene therapeutics.

Abstract The blackfin Icefish (Chaenocephalus aceratus) belongs to the family Channichthyidae and the suborder Notothenioidei which lives in the Antarctic. We corrected the mis-scaffolds in the previous linkage map results by Hi-C analysis to obtain improved results for chromosome-level genome assembly. The final assembly analysis resulted in a total of 3,135 scaffolds, a genome size of 1,065.72 Mb, and an N50 of 33.46 Mb. 820.24 Mb, representing 88.88% of the total genome, is anchored to 24 chromosomes. The final gene set of 38,024 genes, including AFGPs, was annotated using RNA evidence, proteins, and ab-initio predictions. The complete percentage of BUSCO analysis is 92.7%. In this study, we aim to contribute to the study of polar fishes by improving the genome sequences of the blackfin icefish with the AFGP genes belonging to the Notothenoidei.

In general, derivation of closed-form analytic formulas for the prices of path-dependent exotic options is a challenging task when the underlying asset price model is chosen to be a stochastic volatility model. Pricing stop-loss and Russian options is studied under a multiscale stochastic volatility model in this paper. Both options are commonly perpetual American-style derivatives with a lookback provision. We derive closed-form formulas explicitly for the approximate prices of these two exotic options by using multiscale asymptotic analysis and partial differential equation method. The formulas can be efficiently computed starting with the Black-Scholes option prices. The accuracy of the analytic approximation is verified via Monte-Carlo simulations and the impacts of the multiscale stochastic volatility on the corresponding Black-Scholes option prices are revealed. Also, the performance of the model is compared with that of other models.

The Patagonian moray cod, Muraenolepis orangiensis, belongs to the family Muraenolepididae and is the sole order of Gadiformes that inhabits the temperate and cold waters of the southern hemisphere. One of the features of the Gadiformes order is that they have a remarkably unique immune gene repertoire that influences innate and adaptive immunity, and they lack major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, invariant chains (CD74), and CD4 genes. In this study, a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly was constructed, resulting in a final assembled genome of 893.75 Mb, with an N50 scaffold length of 30.07 Mb and the longest scaffold being 39.77 Mb. Twenty-five high-quality pseudochromosomes were assembled, and the complete BUSCO rate was 93.4%. A total of 34,553 genes were structurally annotated, and 27,691 genes were functionally annotated. Among the 10 primary genes involved in MHC class II, only two ERAP1 genes and one AIRE gene were identified through the genome study. Although no specific reason for the MHC class II deficiency has been identified, it has been shown that the toll-like receptors (TLRs), which are significant to the innate immune response, are significantly expanded in M. orangiensis. A total of 44 TLRs have been identified, with 32 TLR13 genes distributed evenly on six different pseudochromosomes. This study is the first to reveal the whole genome of a Muraenolepididae family and provides valuable insights into the potential rationale for the MHC class II deficiency in a Gadiformes fish species.

This study, focusing on the Antarctic polynyas, performed the imputation of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) dataset, which is one of the ocean color products mainly used for estimating primary productivity, using the Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Function method and constructed accurate time-series data that excludes as much uncertainty as possible in long-term variability studies due to missing data. The polynya regions were classified into a total of 23 zones through quantitative criterions, and the statistical accuracy of imputation performance was 0.89 for R2 and 0.42, 0.24, and 0.15 for root mean square error, mean squared error, mean absolute error, respectively, on average, showing the ability to perform generally accurate reconstruction. Finally, the reconstructed Chl-a data showed a relatively stable fluctuation compared with standard satellite Chl-a data, and tended to be underestimated due to the expansion of the observable regions. We expect that securing these relatively stable and accurate estimates will be significantly different from the time-series data composed of standard Chl-a estimates, enabling more accurate variability and trend analysis.

In the field of natural language processing, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been utilized to solve various problems, such as text classification, similarity measurement, chatbots, machine translation, and machine reading comprehension. Significant advancements have been made in complex and rule-intensive natural language processing through deep learning, in which machines directly learn patterns. Machine reading comprehension, a natural language processing task, involves machines understanding questions and paragraphs to find answers within paragraphs. In 2019, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) and a robust optimized BERT pretraining approach (RoBERTa) were introduced. They were then optimized for pretraining and fine-tuning, resulting in significant advancements. RoBERTa outperformed BERT in terms of training speed and performance by increasing the pretraining data and batch sizes, employing dynamic masking, and eliminating the next sentence prediction task. In RoBERTa, machine reading comprehension involves simultaneously inputting questions and paragraphs. However, this simultaneous input method suffers from the attention separate representation (ASP) problem, in which the attention distribution between the question and the paragraph spreads widely across keywords. This study proposed two methods to address the ASP problem. The existing input format, question-paragraph, was changed to three independent inputs: question, paragraph, and concatenated RoBERTa outputs. The concatenated matrix was then transformed into two matrices, and a machine reading comprehension algorithm using co-attention was proposed. An ablation study was conducted to evaluate and analyze the model’s performance, comprehension, and design efficiency. According to the experimental results, the proposed method improved the EM by 0.9% and F1 by 1.0% compared to the existing methods. Consequently, the learning performance was enhanced through attention concentration and co-attention, and it could demonstrate much better performance compared to the existing models.

Neuronal organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells can be transplanted and integrated into the rodent cortex for the study of brain development and function. Here the authors demonstrate use of transparent graphene microelectrodes and two photon imaging for longitudinal, multimodal monitoring of functional connectivity between human iPSC derived neuronal organoids and the mouse cortex.

The Ross Sea region Marine Protected Area (RSR MPA) is one of the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean. Mesozooplankton intermediates the primary product to the higher predators, such as penguins and seals, in this ecosystem. In this study, the mesozooplankton community structure and spatial pattern in the RSR MPA in January were investigated by using 505 μm-mesh-size bongo net samples. As a result, 37 mesozooplankton taxa with a total mean abundance of 35.26 ind./m3, ranging from 2.94 to 139.17 ind./m3, were confirmed. Of the 37 taxa, 7 occupied almost 84% of the total abundance, with copepods being the main dominant taxa. As shown by our hierarchical analysis, the mesozooplankton community was divided into four groups, each associated with a specific geographical distribution. Group A was composed of stations around Terra Nova Bay and showed relatively low abundance. Group B included stations around the continental slope region. Group D was composed of the Ross Sea continental shelf stations, while group C consisted of stations geographically located between those of groups B and D. These four groups were influenced by various environmental factors, such as water temperature, salinity, and nutrients. In summary, the mesozooplankton community can be separated according to geographical pattern. This pattern is related to several environmental factors.

Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) play a crucial intermediary role in connecting top predators and krill in the food web of the Antarctic Ocean. Despite their crucial role, research on their abundance is lacking. In this study, we estimated the abundance of juvenile Antarctic silverfish as foundational data for predicting their abundance. The density of juvenile Antarctic silverfish was estimated using an acoustic backscattering theoretical model. The mean volume backscattering strength was used to investigate the vertical and horizontal distributions of juvenile Antarctic silverfish in the Antarctic Ross Sea. The survey area was located near Cape Hallett, Antarctica, where Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), ice krill (E. crystallorophias), and Antarctic silverfish coexist. The survey was performed four times using the Korean Antarctic research ship, RV Araon (R/V, 7507 GT). Frame trawls were conducted to identify the length and weight of the target fish species in the survey area. Captured Antarctic silverfish captured measured 3–9 cm. The maximum target strength (TS) was −92.93 dB at 38 kHz, −86.63 dB at 120 kHz, and 85.89 dB at 200 kHz. The average TS was −100.00 dB at 38 kHz, −93.00 dB at 120 kHz, and −106.90 dB at 200 kHz. Most juvenile Antarctic silverfish were found at a depth of 100 m and were distributed closer to sea ice. Between nearshore and polynya waters, the fish demonstrated a proclivity for polynya waters.

BackgroundUntact cultures have rapidly spread around the world as a result of the prolongation of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to various types of research and technological developments in the fields of medicine and health care, where digital health care refers to health care services provided in a digital environment. Previous studies relating to digital health care demonstrated its effectiveness in managing chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. While many studies have applied digital health care to various diseases, daily health care is needed for healthy individuals before they are diagnosed with a disease. Accordingly, research on individuals who have not been diagnosed with a disease is also necessary. ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify the effects of using a customized digital health care service (CDHCS) on risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MS) and lifestyle improvement. MethodsThe population consisted of 63 adults who underwent a health checkup at the National Health Insurance Service Ilsan (NHIS) Hospital in 2020. Measured variables include basic clinical indicators, MS-related variables, and lifestyle variables. All items were measured at NHIS Ilsan Hospital before the use of the CDHCS and 3 months thereafter. The CDHCS used in this study is a mobile app that analyzes the health condition of the user by identifying their risk factors and provides appropriate health care content. For comparison between before and after CDHCS use (pre-post comparison), paired t test was used for continuous variables, and a chi-square test was used for nominal variables. ResultsThe study population included 30 (47.6%) male and 33 (52.4%) female participants, and the mean age was 47.61 (SD 13.93) years. The changes in clinical indicators before and after intervention results showed a decrease in weight, waist circumference, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increases in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. The distribution of the risk group increased from 32 (50.8%) to 34 (54%) and that of the MS group decreased from 18 (28.6%) to 16 (25.4%). The mean metabolic syndrome age–chronological age before the CDHCS was 2.20 years, which decreased to 1.72 years after CDHCS, showing a decrease of 0.48 years in the mean metabolic syndrome age–chronological age after the intervention. While all lifestyle variables, except alcohol consumption, showed a tendency toward improvement, the differences were not statistically significant. ConclusionsAlthough there was no statistical significance in the variables under study, this pilot study will provide a foundation for more accurate verification of CDHCS in future research.

Objectives The world is witnessing a sharp increase in its elderly population, accelerated by longer life expectancy and lower birth rates, which in turn imposes enormous medical burden on society. Although numerous studies have predicted medical expenses based on region, gender, and chronological age (CA), any attempt has rarely been made to utilize biological age (BA)—an indicator of health and aging—to ascertain and predict factors related to medical expenses and medical care use. Thus, this study employs BA to predict factors that affect medical expenses and medical care use. Materials and methods Referring to the health screening cohort database of the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), this study targeted 276,723 adults who underwent health check-ups in 2009−2010 and kept track of the data on their medical expenses and medical care use up to 2019. The average follow-up period is 9.12 years. Twelve clinical indicators were used to measure BA, while the total annual medical expenses, total annual number of outpatient days, total annual number of days in hospital, and average annual increases in medical expenses were used as the variables for medical expenses and medical care use. For statistical analysis, this study employed Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results Regression analysis of the differences between corrected biological age (cBA) and CA exhibited statistically significant increases (pConclusions This study quantified decreases in the variables for medical expenses and medical care use based on improved BA, thereby motivating people to become more health-conscious. In particular, this study is significant in that it is the first of its kind to predict medical expenses and medical care use through BA.

We report on the first investigation of feather mites associated with birds living on the Barton Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica). We found seven feather mite species of the superfamily Analgoidea from four host species. Two new species are described from two charadriiform hosts: Alloptes (Sternalloptes) antarcticus sp. nov. (Alloptidae) from Stercorarius maccormicki Saunders (Stercorariidae), and Ingrassia chionis sp. nov. (Xolalgidae) from Chionis albus (Gmelin) (Chionidae). Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), which was utilized as a DNA barcode, for all seven feather mite species.

Purple bacteria (PPB), anoxygenic photoorganoheterotrophic organisms with a hyper-versatile metabolism and high biomass yields over substrate, are promising candidates for the recovery of nutrient resources from wastewater. Infrared light is a pivotal parameter to control and design PPB-based resource recovery. However, the effects of light intensities on the physiology and selection of PPB in mixed cultures have not been studied to date. Here, we examined the effect of infrared irradiance on PPB physiology, enrichment, and growth over a large range of irradiance (0 to 350 W m−2) in an anaerobic mixed-culture sequencing batch photobioreactor. We developed an empirical mathematical model that suggests higher PPB growth rates as response to higher irradiance. Moreover, PPB adapted to light intensity by modulating the abundances of their phototrophic complexes. The obtained results provide an in-depth phylogenetic and metabolic insight the impact of irradiance on PPB. Our findings deliver the fundamental information for guiding the design of light-driven, anaerobic mixed-culture PPB processes for wastewater treatment and bioproduct valorization.

Summary: The hippocampus plays a critical role in spatial navigation and episodic memory. However, research on in vivo hippocampal activity dynamics mostly relies on single modalities, such as electrical recordings or optical imaging, with respectively limited spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we develop the E-Cannula, integrating fully transparent graphene microelectrodes with imaging cannula, which enables simultaneous electrical recording and two-photon calcium imaging from the exact same neural populations across an anatomically extended region of the mouse hippocampal CA1 stably across several days. The large-scale multimodal recordings show that sharp wave ripples (SWRs) exhibit spatiotemporal wave patterns along multiple axes in two-dimensional (2D) space with different spatial extents and temporal propagation modes. Notably, distinct SWR wave patterns are associated with the selective recruitment of orthogonal CA1 cell assemblies. These results demonstrate the utility of the E-Cannula as a versatile neurotechnology with the potential for future integration with other optical components.

Recently, a high level of dietary crude protein (CP) has become of interest as a possible practice to improve the carcass quality of beef cattle, and its level has been increasing in the field. However, there is little scientific evidence that supports this. This study was conducted to test whether a high dietary CP level would improve growth performance, body metabolism, and carcass traits in Hanwoo beef cattle. A total of 32 Hanwoo finishing beef cattle (18 multiparous cows, six heifers, and eight steers) participated in a 12-weeks feeding trial. Two kinds of total mixed rations were prepared to contain two different CP; 156 g/kg for the control (CON) and 173 g/kg of CP for the treatment (HCP), while maintaining a similar level of metabolizable energy. The experiment was ended when more than half of the steers reached the target body weight (730 kg). Blood was collected at the end of the experiment. After harvesting, the carcass trait was evaluated at the slaughterhouse according to Korean standards. The carcass yield score and grade were also calculated based on revised criteria. Overall, dry matter intake, average daily gain, blood metabolites concentration, and the carcass traits, except for backfat thickness and the yield score, did not differ between the treatments. The HCP had lower backfat thickness than those of CON. There was no difference in the carcass yield grade, but the yield score was higher in the HCP treatment. According to the newly revised carcass grading criteria, both yield score and grade were higher in HCP than in CON. Increasing CP supply decreased the carcass’s backfat thickness without altering growth performance and body metabolism, resulting in improved yield score and grade. Therefore, feeding a high CP diet may be beneficial in the farm income, although it may also increase feed cost and nitrogen excretion to the environment.

Abstract Against a changing climate, the development of evidence‐based and progressive conservation policies depends on robust and quantitative baseline studies to resolve habitat natural variability and rate of change. Despite Antarctica's significant role in global climate regulation, climate trend estimates for continental Antarctica are ambiguous due to sparse long‐term in situ records. Here, we present the longest, spatially explicit survey of Antarctic vegetation by harmonizing historic vegetation mapping with modern remote sensing techniques. In 1961, E. D. Rudolph established a permanent survey plot at Cape Hallett, one of the most botanically diverse areas along the Ross Sea coastline, harboring all known types of non‐vascular Antarctic vegetation. Following a survey in 2004 using ground‐based photography, we conducted the third survey of Rudolph's Plot in 2018 using near‐ground remote sensing and methodologies closely mirroring the two historic surveys to identify long‐term changes and trends. Our results revealed that the vegetation at Cape Hallett remained stable over the past six decades with no evidence of transformation related to a changing climate. Instead, the local vegetation shows strong seasonal phenology, distribution patterns that are driven by water availability, and steady perennial growth of moss. Given that East Antarctica is at the tipping point of drastic change in the near future, with biological change having been reported at certain locations, this record represents a unique and potentially the last opportunity to establish a meaningful biological sentinel that will allow us to track subtle yet impactful environmental change in terrestrial Antarctica in the 21st century.

Although wireless optogenetic technologies enable brain circuit investigation in freely moving animals, existing devices have limited their full potential, requiring special power setups. Here, the authors report fully implantable optogenetic systems that allow intervention-free wireless charging and controls for operation in any environment.

Abstract For valence change memory (VCM)‐type synapses, a large number of vacancies help to achieve very linearly changed dynamic range, and also, the low activation energy of vacancies enables low‐voltage operation. However, a large number of vacancies increases the current of artificial synapses by acting like dopants, which aggravates low‐energy operation and device scalability. Here, mixed‐dimensional formamidinium bismuth iodides featuring in‐situ formed type‐I band structure are reported for the VCM‐type synapse. As compared to the pure 2D and 0D phases, the mixed phase increases defect density, which induces a better dynamic range and higher linearity. In addition, the mixed phase decreases conductivity for non‐paths despite a large number of defects providing lots of conducting paths. Thus, the mixed phase‐based memristor devices exhibit excellent potentiation/depression characteristics with asymmetricity of 3.15, 500 conductance states, a dynamic range of 15, pico ampere‐scale current level, and energy consumption per spike of 61.08 aJ. A convolutional neural network (CNN) simulation with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research‐10 (CIFAR‐10) dataset is also performed, confirming a maximum recognition rate of approximately 87%. This study is expected to lay the groundwork for future research on organic bismuth halide‐based memristor synapses usable for a neuromorphic computing system.

The spatio-temporal distributions of the epipelagic mesozooplankton community in the western Ross Sea region marine protected area (RSR MPA) were investigated. Mesozooplankton surveys were conducted in February 2018, January 2019, and March 2020 from an approximate depth of 200 m to address the essential environmental factors influencing the mesozooplankton community structure. Our results showed that the mesozooplankton community of the western RSR MPA could be affected by the various ecological factors, depending on their temporal and spatial variations. The community structure in 2018 was distinguished by its chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration during the summer bloom phase in the late summer. Taxa observed in 2019 were divided into four significantly different groups according to the body size of the community composition. This differentiation could be derived from predation pressure, inducing a trophic cascade. Taxa in the 2020 samples were separated into five different groups based on temperature; during the 2020 survey, the water temperature was low and sea ice covered the whole continental shelf in the Ross Sea. Additionally, comparing the results from the three interannual surveys, although the communities clustered according to the survey period, the continental shelf groups were quite dissimilar despite overlapping geographically. Taken all together, the mesozooplankton community of the western RSR MPA changed according to changes in several ecological factors, such as temperature, Chl-a concentration, and predation pressure. The occurrence of summer blooms and the decline in water temperature mainly regulated the mesozooplankton community structure in the late summer.

The human-induced disturbances in Antarctica have caused changes in the structure and function of ecosystems. The Cape Hallett station was established in 1957 and abandoned in 1973. The station was built inside a penguin colony, and during its operation, many penguins were deported. Herein, we compared the number of breeding pairs across different time periods after station decommission and environmental remediation. The station occupied 4.77 ha within the Adélie penguin breeding area, and 349 nests were identified inside the station border in 1960. In 1983, the station’s territory decreased to 4.2 ha; meanwhile, 1683 breeding pairs were counted in the old station area. The past station area re-inhabited by Adélie penguins had 6175 nests in 2019. We assumed that recolonization might be particularly related to artificial mounds. The results of the present study confirm the recolonization of Adélie penguins at Cape Hallett for the first time, with visual analysis of spatial-temporal changes. Additionally, we suggest that reconstruction of the artificial or enhanced habitat may be required for successful restoration. Furthermore, continuous species monitoring with specific notes are needed with management interventions to protect Antarctic ecosystems, as well as the Ross Sea region MPA.

The crocodile icefish, Chionobathyscus dewitti, belonging to the family Channichthyidae, is an endemic species of the Southern Ocean. The study of its biological features and genetics is challenging as the fish inhabits the deep sea around Antarctic waters. The icefish, the sole cryopelagic species, shows unique physiological and genetic features, unlike other teleosts. It lacks hemoglobin and has evolved antifreeze proteins. Here, we report the genome sequencing data of crocodile icefish produced using the Illumina Novaseq 6000 platform. The estimated genome size was 0.88 Gb with a K-value of 19, and the unique sequence, heterozygosity, error, and duplication rates were 57.4%, 0.421%, 0.317%, and 0.738%, respectively. A genome assembly of 880.69 Mb, with an N50 scaffold length of 2401 bp, was conducted. We identified 2,252,265 microsatellite motifs from the genome assembly data, and dinucleotide repeats (1,920,127; 85.25%) had the highest rate. We selected 84 primer pairs from the genome survey assembly and randomly selected 30 primer pairs for validation. As a result, 15 primer pairs were validated as microsatellite markers.

Total fatty-acid (FA) contents of different organs (stomach, liver, brain, and skin) of two Antarctic fish, marbled rockcod (Notothenia rossii) and mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari), were examined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). N. rossii possessed higher contents of total omega-3, where eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the most represented omega-3 FAs, were distributed throughout all parts of the fish. The highest level of EPA was observed in the skin and that of DHA was observed in the brain of N. rossii. C. gunnari showed organ peculiarity in that most of the omega-3 FAs were found in stomach and skin. Specifically, the highest levels of EPA and DHA were both observed in the stomach. Although N. rossii and C. gunnari both inhabit the Antarctic Southern Oceans, their characteristics in terms of the composition of fatty acids were shown to vary. The extracts were also evaluated for matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1)-inhibitory activities in UVB-induced human dermal fibroblasts, where extracts of the skin and liver of N. rossii showed the most significant inhibition upon MMP-1 production. These findings provide experimental evidence that the extracts of the Antarctic fish could be utilized as bioactive nutrients, particularly in the enhancement of skin health.

Marine particulate organic matter (POM) largely derived from phytoplankton is a primary food source for upper trophic consumers. Their biochemical compositions are important for heterotrophs. Especially, essential amino acids (EAAs) in phytoplankton are well known to have impacts on the survival and egg productions of herbivorous zooplankton. To estimate the nutritional quality of POM, the biochemical compositions [biomolecular and amino acid (AA) compositions] of POM were investigated in the northwestern Ross Sea during the late austral summer in 2018. Carbohydrates (CHO) accounted for the highest portion among different biomolecules [CHO, proteins (PRT), and lipids (LIP)] of POM. However, the higher contribution of PRT and lower contribution of CHO were observed in the southern section of our study area compared to those in the northern section. The spatial distribution of total hydrolyzable AAs in POM was considerably influenced by phytoplankton biomass, which indicates that the main source of particulate AA was generated by phytoplankton. Our results showed that the relative contribution of EAA to the total AAs was strongly associated with EAA index (EAAI) for determining protein quality. This result indicates that higher EAA contribution in POM suggests a better protein quality in consistency with high EAAI values. In this study, variations in the biochemical compositions in POM were principally determined by two different bloom-forming taxa (diatoms and Phaeocystis antarctica). The southern region dominated majorly by diatoms was positively correlated with PRT, EAA, and EAAI indicating a good protein quality, while P. antarctica-abundant northern region with higher CHO contribution was negatively correlated with good protein quality factors. Climate-driven environmental changes could alter not only the phytoplankton community but also the physiological conditions of phytoplankton. Our findings could provide a better understanding for future climate-induced changes in the biochemical compositions of phytoplankton and consequently their potential impacts on higher trophic levels.

The Muraenolepididae family of fishes, known as eel cods, inhabits continental slopes and shelves in the Southern Hemisphere. This family belongs to the Gadiformes order, which constitutes one of the most important commercial fish resources worldwide, but the classification of the fish species in this order is ambiguous because it is only based on the morphological and habitat characteristics of the fishes. Here, the genome of Patagonian moray cod was sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq platform, and screened for microsatellite motifs. The genome was predicted to be 748.97 Mb, with a heterozygosity rate of 0.768%, via K-mer analysis (K = 25). The genome assembly showed that the total size of scaffolds was 711.92 Mb and the N50 scaffold length was 1522 bp. Additionally, 4,447,517 microsatellite motifs were identified from the genome survey assembly, and the most abundant motif type was found to be AC/GT. In summary, these data may facilitate the identification of molecular markers in Patagonian moray cod, which would be a good basis for further whole-genome sequencing with long read sequencing technology and chromosome conformation capture technology, as well as population genetics.

Krill play a crucial role in the transfer of energy in the marine food web, connecting primary producers and the upper trophic levels in the Terra Nova Bay polynya (TNBP), which is part of the Ross Sea marine protected area. Despite the substantial ecological importance of krill, there are few studies on their distribution and abundance in the TNBP. An acoustic survey was conducted on 7–14 January 2019 in the TNBP, Ross Sea, using a Simrad EK60 echosounder (38 and 120 kHz) aboard the icebreaker RV Araon. The most commonly used range of the difference of the mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS) (2–16 dB) was applied to distinguish krill. The acoustic data (120 kHz) were extracted to examine the krill distribution characteristics. The study area was divided into low-value areas and high-value areas based on the third quartile of the nautical area scattering coefficient. The results showed that the krill aggregations were distributed in three layers at depths of 0–30 m, 70–110 m, and 270–300 m. The interpolated environmental parameters associated with the backscattering strength were compared. High-value areas of krill coincided with relatively low temperature, low salinity, and high chlorophyll, although very weak correlations were found. The primary goal of this study was to understand the vertical and horizontal distributions of krill acoustic biomass and to relate the observed patterns to the dominant environmental conditions.

A general finite element model and a new solution method were developed to simulate the permeances of Lintz Donawiz converter gas (LDG) components and the performance of a polysulfone membrane separation unit. The permeances at eight bars of CO, N2, and H2 in LDG simulated using the developed model equations employing the experimental mixed gas data were obtained by controlling the finite element numbers and comparing them with pure gas permeation data. At the optimal finite element numbers (s = 15, n = 1), the gas permeances under the mixed-gas condition were 6.3% (CO), 3.9% (N2), and 7.2% (H2) larger than those of the pure gases, On the other hand, the mixed-gas permeance of CO2 was 4.5% smaller than that of pure gas. These differences were attributed to the plasticization phenomenon of the polysulfone membrane used by CO2. The newly adopted solution method for the stiff nonlinear model functions enabled the simulation of the performance (in terms of gas recovery, concentration, and flow rate) of the first-stage membrane within two seconds under most gas flow conditions. The performance of a first-stage membrane unit separating LDG could be predicted by the developed model with a small error of

The diet of Adélie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, is a useful indicator in understanding the ecological conditions of their habitats. The diets of Adélie penguins were studied using metabarcoding and quantitative PCR (qPCR) analyses of fecal DNA from seven habitats along the Ross Sea region. Using metabarcoding analysis with dual universal primers (18Sv9 and miniFish), the overall diet composition and detailed information about piscine prey were clearly elucidated. It was found that two krill species (Euphausia superba and Euphausia crystallorophias) and notothenioid fish were the most abundant in the diets of Adélie penguins. Among the notothenioid prey, Pleuragramma antarctica (56.50%) and Pagothenia borchgrevinki (18.21%) were the two most abundant species. qPCR analysis showed a significant geographic difference in the composition of main prey. Penguins inhabiting outbound parts of the Ross Sea (Capes Adare (CA) and Duke of York Island (DY)) mainly preyed on E. superba, without any significant changes in prey composition. By contrast, those inhabiting the inbound parts of the Ross Sea (Edmonson Point (EP) and Inexpressible Island (II)) preyed on E. crystallorophias and notothenioid fish rather than E. superba. Compared with the outbound habitats, prey compositions for penguins inhabiting the inbound regions were significantly different year to year, which was presumably due to the food availability based on the annual environmental and meteorological conditions of the coastal region along with the inbound parts of the Ross Sea.

Trematomus species (suborder Notothenioidei; family Nototheniidae) are widely distributed in the southern oceans near Antarctica. There are 11 recognized species in the genus Trematomus, and notothenioids are known to have high chromosomal diversity (2n = 24–58) because of relatively recent and rapid adaptive radiation. Herein, we report the chromosomal-level genome assembly of T. loennbergii, the first characterized genome representative of the genus Trematomus. The final genome assembly of T. loennbergii was obtained using a Pacific Biosciences long-read sequencing platform and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture technology. Twenty-three chromosomal-level scaffolds were assembled to 940 Mb in total size, with a longest contig size of 48.5 Mb and contig N50 length of 24.7 Mb. The genome contained 42.03% repeat sequences, and a total of 24,525 protein-coding genes were annotated. We produced a high-quality genome assembly of T. loennbergii. Our results provide a first reference genome for the genus Trematomus and will serve as a basis for studying the molecular taxonomy and evolution of Antarctic fish.

Trematomus loennbergii Regan, 1913, is an evolutionarily important marine fish species distributed in the Antarctic Ocean. However, its genome has not been studied to date. In the present study, whole genome sequencing was performed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to characterize its genome and develop genomic microsatellite markers. The 25-mer frequency distribution was estimated to be the best, and the genome size was predicted to be 815,042,992 bp. The heterozygosity, average rate of read duplication, and sequencing error rates were 0.536%, 0.724%, and 0.292%, respectively. These data were used to analyze microsatellite markers, and a total of 2,264,647 repeat motifs were identified. The most frequent repeat motif was di-nucleotide with 87.00% frequency, followed by tri-nucleotide (10.45%), tetra-nucleotide (1.94%), penta-nucleotide (0.34%), and hexa-nucleotide (0.27%). The AC repeat motif was the most abundant motif among di-nucleotides and among all repeat motifs. Among microsatellite markers, 181 markers were selected and PCR technology was used to validate several markers. A total of 15 markers produced only one band. In summary, these results provide a good basis for further studies, including evolutionary biology studies and population genetics of Antarctic fish species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Trematomus loennbergii was studied using NGS technology with PacBio platform. The mitochondrial genome size was 19,374bp and it had 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs and 2 rRNAs. There were 4 types of stop codons which were TAA, TAG, AGG and T(AA) but start codon type was only one (ATG). The contents of GC were 44.09% and AT contents were 55.91%. To conduct phylogenetic analysis, 12 species in 3 families were used. The result suggested that T. loennbergii was close to Pagothenia borchgrevinki in Nototheniidae. This study would provide a fundamental data for molecular evolution of T. loennbergii.

The Macaroni penguin Eudyptes chrysolophus is a small crested penguin. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of E. chrysolophus is revealed for the first time. The mitogenome sequence is circular and 17,059 bp in length. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes similar to other Spheniscidae species. The total nucleotide composition is 30.53% (A), 32.86% (C), 13.96% (G), and 22.66% (T), and 46.81% for overall GC contents. The phylogenetic analysis shows a close relationship between E. chrysolophus and E. schlegeli. Our findings would be useful for further studies on phylogenetics and evolutionary history of the genus Eudyptes.

To identify the dietary composition and characteristics of both Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri) penguins at four breeding sites, we performed stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis of down samples taken from penguin chicks. Adélie Penguin chicks at Cape Hallett mostly fed on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; 65.5 ± 3.5%), a reflection of the prevalence of that species near Cape Hallett, and no significant differences were noted between 2017 and 2018. However, Adélie Penguin chicks at Inexpressible Island, located near Terra Nova Bay, fed on both Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarctica; 42.5%) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias; 47%), reflecting the high biomass observed in Terra Nova Bay. Meanwhile, no significant difference was noted between the two breeding sites of the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguin chicks predominantly fed on Antarctic silverfish (74.5 ± 2.1%) at both breeding sites (Cape Washington and Coulman Island), suggesting that diet preference represents the main factor influencing Emperor Penguin foraging. In contrast, the diet of the Adélie Penguin reflects presumed regional differences in prey prevalence, as inferred from available survey data.

The southern giant petrel Macronectes giganteus, a large seabird of the southern oceans, is one of only two members of the genus Macronectes and is the largest species in the order Procellariiformes. Although these two families account for the vast majority of the avian fauna inhabiting the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, studies on the status of some populations and the associated genetic data are currently extremely limited. In this study, we assembled the genome of M. giganteus by integrating Pacific Biosciences single-molecule real-time sequencing and the Chromium system developed by 10x Genomics. The final M. giganteus genome assembly was 1.248 Gb in size with a scaffold N50 length of 27.4 Mb and a longest scaffold length of 120.4 Mb. The M. giganteus genome contains 14,993 predicted protein-coding genes and has 11.06% repeat sequences. Estimated historical effective population size analysis indicated that the southern giant petrel underwent a severe reduction in effective population size during a period coinciding with the early Pleistocene. The availability of this newly sequenced genome will facilitate more effective genetic monitoring of threatened species. Furthermore, the genome will provide a valuable resource for gene functional studies and further comparative genomic studies on the life history and ecological traits of specific avian species.

Abstract In contrast to their terrestrial call, the offshore call of penguins during their foraging trips has been poorly studied due to the inaccessibility of the foraging site—the open ocean—to researchers. Here, we present the first description of the vocal behaviour of penguins in the open ocean and discuss the function of their vocal communication. We deployed an animal-borne camera on gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) and recorded their foraging behaviour during chick guarding. From the video recordings, we collected 598 offshore calls from 10 individuals in two breeding seasons (2014–2015 and 2015–2016), and we analysed the acoustic characteristics and behavioural contexts of these calls, including diving patterns, group association events, and foraging behaviour. The offshore calls varied in their dominant frequency and length, and penguins produced calls of different lengths in succession. Group associations were observed within one minute following an offshore call in almost half of the instances (43.18%). Penguins undertook dives of shallower depths and shorter durations after producing an offshore call than those before producing an offshore call. Our findings show that penguins may use vocal communication in the ocean related with group association during foraging trips.

Abstract Poor decision-making is a core problem in psychiatric disorders such as pathological gambling and substance abuse. Both trait and environmental factors are considerably important to affect decision-making. However, it has not yet been systematically shown how they interact to affect risk preference in animal models evaluating decision-making. Here, we trained rats, housed in pairs or in isolation, in a touch screen chamber to detect the association between four different light signals on the screen and accompanied reward and punishment outcomes arranged with different schedules. Then, the rats were allowed to freely choose from 4 different light signals. Once animals showed a stabilized pattern of preference (risk-averse or risk-seeking), they were injected with saline or cocaine (a single injection per day for 7 days) followed by 2 weeks of withdrawal. Then, their preference of choice was re-tested in the touch screen chamber while they were cocaine challenged. All rats significantly changed their preference toward more risky choices when they were exposed to and challenged with cocaine, except those in the risk-averse/isolated housing group. These results indicate that the pre-existing trait toward risk and the housing condition interact to affect the quality of decision-making, and cocaine may help to aggravate this process.
