Local neutral pressure measurements in the closed small angle slot (SAS) divertor [1,2] on DIII-D show a large increase when the divertor plasma shifts from high recycling into detachment. In-tile pressure gauges were installed to measure the pressure in the near- and far-SOL regions to examine the predicted high neutral pressures and compression. Cross-field drift effects lead to ∼ 10 × higher peak neutral pressure in detachment with the ion ∇B drift toward the divertor compared to out of the divertor, with similar pressures in attached conditions. Drifts also play a role in the neutral distribution in the slot while attached but become less pronounced in detachment once gradient drives reduce. Variation in the outer strike point location found higher neutral pressure and detachment at modestly lower main-plasma density with the strike point positioned away from the designed operation point. Reducing the fraction of the SOL width allowed into the slot increases neutral leakage into the main chamber and increases the main-plasma density required for detachment. Preliminary modeling with the SOLPS code without drifts over-predicts the neutral pressure in detachment by a factor of 2 with the strike point in the designed operation point while more significantly over-predicts the neutral slot compression; experiments show a broader distribution of neutrals through the slot. SOLPS-ITER modeling of EDA H-mode experiments on Alcator C-Mod find that the electron density pedestal structure is unaffected by increased gas fueling when approaching ITER-like opaqueness conditions. SOLPS-ITER simulations show a decrease in the neutral penetration depth with increasing pedestal density, similar to prior experiments (Hughes et al., 2006). Neutral density and penetration depth vary poloidally, and we show that the highest neutral densities at the separatrix are found closest to the gas puff locations both on the high field side and the low field side. The decrease in the neutral penetration depth with increasing pedestal density, as well as the decrease in the neutral density at the separatrix, are not just limited to the midplane, but persist at every poloidal location. We find, however, that when gas puffs of similar magnitude as those employed in experiments are added, a much larger increase in the electron density is observed over the whole modeled plasma radius. This does suggest that changes in transport will need to be included self-consistently.

The unmitigated heat flux in attached operation of a fusion power plant is predicted to be destructive to any solid divertor surface. Detachment, whereby the plasma pressure drops significantly before reaching the divertor target thus greatly reducing the heat flux and sputtering, will be necessary to ensure adequate lifetime of plasma facing components (PFCs). The lithium vapor box divertor aims to detach the divertor plasma via evaporating and condensing lithium surfaces. By evaporating lithium near or at the divertor plate and condensing it closer to the main chamber, a lithium vapor density gradient can be created. This density gradient ties energy losses to poloidal distance between the target and the detachment point. The radiation zone is then prevented from reaching the X-point as the lithium ionization rate decreases when the detachment front moves away from the divertor target. Here we present Scrape Off Layer Plasma Simulator (SOLPS) simulations of a lithium vapor box divertor using an NSTX-U equilibrium and PFC geometry. The parameters for the core boundary conditions, gas puff intensity, and heat and particle transport coefficients are chosen to match experimental values. Acceptable agreement with experimental Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) widths is found, indicating a reasonable choice of transport coefficients. In predictive simulations, lithium is added via evaporation at the target. Predictions for peak heat fluxes and upstream impurity concentration are given for a variety of evaporation rates. Target electron temperature is predicted to be able to be reduced to recombination levels (below 1 eV) for lithium evaporation rates of 1 ⋅ 1 0 23 Li/s, indicating detachment. Peak heat flux at the lower outer target could be reduced by as much as a factor of six while maintaining upstream lithium fractions below 2%. The prevention of lithium from reaching the midplane is shown to be due to an increase in frictional forces acting on the lithium from a deuterium gas puff. Lithium is also shown to be redeposited close to the evaporator which is favorable for initial tests and future capillary porous systems.

DIII-D L-mode experiments with local boron powder injection for real-time wall conditioning have been interpreted for the first time with the 3D plasma edge transport Monte Carlo code EMC3-EIRENE. Local B sourcing in plasma scenarios with upstream densities 1 . 5 ⋅ 1 0 19 m−3 and 2.2 MW heating results in a non-axisymmetric B distribution in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and on the divertor. The SOL frictional flows at high plasma density cause a strong inboard drag of injected impurities ( ≈ 90 % ), while lower background plasma densities tend to result in a more uniform distribution. The thermal forces prevent B deposition in the near SOL while the frictional force causes B fluxes to cover the divertor plasma-facing components in a region 7–10 cm beyond the strike line. Radiative dissipation occurs for B influxes above 1 ⋅ 1 0 20 s−1 and causes a moderate, non-axisymmetric reduction of the far SOL divertor heat fluxes. A comparison of top and midplane B injection shows no substantial difference in inboard vs. outboard asymmetries of the B distribution. On the other hand, erosion or recycling at the strike line may distribute the boron more uniformly in the SOL.

Owing to its high magnetic field, high power, and compact size, the SPARC experiment will operate with divertor conditions at or above those expected in reactor-class tokamaks. Power exhaust at this scale remains one of the key challenges for practical fusion energy. Based on empirical scalings, the peak unmitigated divertor parallel heat flux is projected to be greater than 10 GW m−2. This is nearly an order of magnitude higher than has been demonstrated to date. Furthermore, the divertor parallel Edge-Localized Mode (ELM) energy fluence projections (~11–34 MJ m−2) are comparable with those for ITER. However, the relatively short pulse length (~25 s pulse, with a ~10 s flat top) provides the opportunity to consider mitigation schemes unsuited to long-pulse devices including ITER and reactors. The baseline scenario for SPARC employs a ~1 Hz strike point sweep to spread the heat flux over a large divertor target surface area to keep tile surface temperatures within tolerable levels without the use of active divertor cooling systems. In addition, SPARC operation presents a unique opportunity to study divertor heat exhaust mitigation at reactor-level plasma densities and power fluxes. Not only will SPARC test the limits of current experimental scalings and serve for benchmarking theoretical models in reactor regimes, it is also being designed to enable the assessment of long-legged and X-point target advanced divertor magnetic configurations. Experimental results from SPARC will be crucial to reducing risk for a fusion pilot plant divertor design.

This work presents the first imaging of three dimensional ion flows in the boundary plasma of the DIII-D tokamak. The impurity flows become three dimensional due to the presence of large magnetic islands that disturb the plasma pressure balance along magnetic field lines which is observed experimentally and investigated using fluid modeling

The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

The 3D edge transport code EMC3-EIRENE is used to evaluate the effects of non-axisymmetric misalignment of the small angle slot (SAS) divertor on DIII-D. The SAS is a slot divertor with a close-fitting baffle designed to control neutral recycling to yield a wide region of low electron temperature across the divertor near the strike point and to achieve mitigated heat flux to the divertor at a lower upstream plasma density as compared to a more open geometry. The measured misalignment is simulated as an n = 1 sinusoidal offset in major radius of magnitude 5.1 mm, resulting in toroidally varying divertor conditions where local regions of high and low fluxes and a changing level of detachment can be supported. The trends can be understood in terms of the local incident angle of the magnetic field, the volume of the private flux plasma in the slot, and the energy losses along the field lines in the slot. The misaligned SAS is globally more attached and has a lower plasma density and particle flux than an axisymmetric solution. Computational grids limited to the radial extent of the slot result in artificially detached solutions unless the cross-field transport coefficients are reduced such that the heat flux width is smaller than the grid width.

The Wendelstein-7X stellarator will go through three operational phases, with successively more energy as more complex divertors are installed. The first operational phase operated without a divertor, instead using five limiters (one in each of the five field periods), the second phase uses ten uncooled test divertor units (TDU), and the third will include an actively cooled divertor. Simulations of plasma operation have shown that the evolution of a toroidal current can lead to significant heat fluxes sweeping across sensitive regions in the divertor, possibly exceeding their qualified limit. A “Scraper Element” (SE) has been proposed to protect these sensitive divertor regions. To examine the effectiveness of this high heat-flux SE, a TDU Scraper Element (TDU-SE) is scheduled to operate with the TDU. A thermal analysis has been performed to correlate to measurements to be obtained during operation to evaluate the location and intensity of the convective plasma flux. The analysis will give an understanding of what is occurring at the plasma edge. It will also allow for a quick evaluation of the safety margin during initial, low power pulses so that the experiment can nimbly move to higher power operation.

We present Aurora, an open-source package for particle transport, neutrals and radiation modeling in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas. Aurora's modern multi-language interface enables simulations of 1.5D impurity transport within high-performance computing frameworks, particularly for the inference of particle transport coefficients. A user-friendly Python library allows simple interaction with atomic rates from the Atomic Data and Atomic Structure database as well as other sources. This enables a range of radiation predictions, both for power balance and spectroscopic analysis. We discuss here the superstaging approximation for complex ions, as a way to group charge states and reduce computational cost, demonstrating its wide applicability within the Aurora forward model and beyond. Aurora also facilitates neutral particle analysis, both from experimental spectroscopic data and other simulation codes. Leveraging Aurora's capabilities to interface SOLPS-ITER results, we demonstrate that charge exchange is unlikely to affect the total radiated power from the ITER core during high performance operation. Finally, we describe the ImpRad module in the OMFIT framework, developed to enable experimental analysis and transport inferences on multiple devices using Aurora., 8 pages + references, 5 figures

The availability of future fusion devices, such as a fusion nuclear science facility or demonstration fusion power station, greatly depends on long operating lifetimes of plasma facing components in their divertors. ORNL is designing the Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX), a superconducting magnet, steady-state device to address the plasma material interactions of fusion reactors. MPEX will utilize a new high-intensity plasma source concept based on RF technology. This source concept will allow the experiment to cover the entire expected plasma conditions in the divertor of a future fusion reactor. It will be able to study erosion and redeposition for relevant geometries with relevant electric and magnetic fields in-front of the target. MPEX is being designed to allow for the exposure of a priori neutron-irradiated samples. The target exchange chamber has been designed to undock from the linear plasma generator such that it can be transferred to diagnostics stations for more detailed surface analysis. MPEX is being developed in a staged approach with successively increased capabilities. After the initial development step of the helicon source and electron cyclotron heating system, the source concept is being tested in the Proto-MPEX device. Proto-MPEX has achieved electron densities of more than $4 \times 10^{19}~\text{m}^{-3}$ with a large diameter (13 cm) helicon antenna at 100 kW power. First heating with microwaves resulted in a higher ionization represented by higher electron densities on axis, when compared with the helicon plasma only without microwave heating.

The InfraRed Video Bolometer (IRVB) is a powerful tool to measure radiated power in magnetically confined plasmas due to its ability to obtain 2D images of plasma emission using a technique that is compatible with the fusion nuclear environment. A prototype IRVB has been developed and installed on NSTX-U to view the lower divertor. The IRVB is a pinhole camera which images radiation from the plasma onto a 2.5 μm thick, 9 × 7 cm2 Pt foil and monitors the resulting spatio-temporal temperature evolution using an IR camera. The power flux incident on the foil is calculated by solving the 2D+time heat diffusion equation, using the foil’s calibrated thermal properties. An optimized, high frame rate IRVB, is quantitatively compared to results from a resistive bolometer on the bench using a modulated 405 nm laser beam with variable power density and square wave modulation from 0.2 Hz to 250 Hz. The design of the NSTX-U system and benchtop characterization are presented where signal-to-noise ratios are assessed using three different IR cameras: FLIR A655sc, FLIR A6751sc, and SBF-161. The sensitivity of the IRVB equipped with the SBF-161 camera is found to be high enough to measure radiation features in the NSTX-U lower divertor as estimated using SOLPS modeling. The optimized IRVB has a frame rate up to 50 Hz, high enough to distinguish radiation during edge-localized-modes (ELMs) from that between ELMs.

The Wendelstein 7-X stellarator is in final stages of commissioning, and will begin operation in late 2015. In the first phase, the machine will operate with a limiter, and will be restricted to low power and short pulse. But in 2019, plans are for an actively cooled divertor to be installed, and the machine will operate in steady state at full power. Recently, plasma simulations have indicated that, in this final operational phase, a bootstrap current will evolve in certain scenarios. This will cause the sensitive ends of the divertor target to be overloaded beyond their qualified limit. A high heat flux scraper element (HHF-SE) has been proposed in order to take up some of the convective flux and reduce the load on the divertor. In order to examine whether the HHF-SE will be able to effectively reduce the plasma flux in the divertor region of concern, and to determine how the pumping effectiveness will be affected by such a component, it is planned to include a test divertor unit scraper element (TDU-SE) in 2017 during an earlier operational phase. Several U.S. fusion energy science laboratories have been involved in the design, analysis (structural and thermal finite element, as well as computational fluid dynamics), plasma simulation, planning, prototyping, and diagnostic development around the scraper element program (both TDU-SE and HHF-SE). This paper presents an overview of all of these activities and their current status.

International audience; The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) optimized stellarator fusion experiment,which went into operation in 2015, has been operating since 2017 with anun-cooled modular graphite divertor. This allowed first divertor physicsstudies to be performed at pulse energies up to 80 MJ, as opposed to 4MJ in the first operation phase, where five inboard limiters wereinstalled instead of a divertor. This, and a number of other upgrades tothe device capabilities, allowed extension into regimes of higher plasmadensity, heating power, and performance overall, e.g. setting a newstellarator world record triple product. The paper focuses on the firstphysics studies of how the island divertor works. The plasma heat loadsarrive to a very high degree on the divertor plates, with only minorheat loads seen on other components, in particular baffle structuresbuilt in to aid neutral compression. The strike line shapes andlocations change significantly from one magnetic configuration toanother, in very much the same way that codes had predicted they would.Strike-line widths are as large as 10 cm, and the wetted areas alsolarge, up to about 1.5 m2, which bodes well for futureoperation phases. Peak local heat loads onto the divertor were ingeneral benign and project below the 10 MW m?2 limit of thefuture water-cooled divertor when operated with 10 MW of heating power,with the exception of low-density attached operation in the high-iotaconfiguration. The most notable result was the complete (in all 10divertor units) heat-flux detachment obtained at high-density operationin hydrogen.

This document is the product of a stellarator community workshop, organized by the National Stellarator Coordinating Committee and referred to as Stellcon, that was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in February 2016, hosted by MIT. The workshop was widely advertised, and was attended by 40 scientists from 12 different institutions including national labs, universities and private industry, as well as a representative from the Department of Energy. The final section of this document describes areas of community wide consensus that were developed as a result of the discussions held at that workshop. Areas where further study would be helpful to generate a consensus path forward for the US stellarator program are also discussed. The program outlined in this document is directly responsive to many of the strategic priorities of FES as articulated in “Fusion Energy Sciences: A Ten-Year Perspective (2015–2025)” [1]. The natural disruption immunity of the stellarator directly addresses “Elimination of transient events that can be deleterious to toroidal fusion plasma confinement devices” an area of critical importance for the US fusion energy sciences enterprise over the next decade. Another critical area of research “Strengthening our partnerships with international research facilities,” is being significantly advanced on the W7-X stellarator in Germany and serves as a test-bed for development of successful international collaboration on ITER. This report also outlines how materials science as it relates to plasma and fusion sciences, another critical research area, can be carried out effectively in a stellarator. Additionally, significant advances along two of the Research Directions outlined in the report; “Burning Plasma Science: Foundations—Next-generation research capabilities”, and “Burning Plasma Science: Long pulse—Sustainment of Long-Pulse Plasma Equilibria” are proposed.

The function of the high heat flux scraper element is to reduce the heat loads on the element ends of the actively cooled divertor of Wendelstein 7-X. The scraper element is actively water cooled to remove up to 550 kW steady state power load, with localized heat fluxes as high as 20 MW/m2. Its surface area, 0.17 m2, is contoured to optimally intercept both upstream and downstream particle fluxes. The plasma facing surface is made of 24 individual scraper fingers based on the monoblock technology. Each scraper finger is 247 mm long and 28 mm wide and has 13 monoblocks made of CFC NB31 bonded by hot isostatic pressing onto a CuCrZr cooling tube equipped with a copper twisted tape. Development activities, described here, include the design and fabrication of prototypes to validate the different technologies selected for the scraper element design to prepare a possible production.

Edge fluid–plasma/kinetic–neutral modeling of well-diagnosed DIII-D experiments is performed in order to document in detail how well certain aspects of experimental measurements are reproduced within the model as the transition to detachment is approached. Results indicate, that at high densities near detachment onset, the poloidal temperature profile produced in the simulations agrees well with that measured in experiment. However, matching the heat flux in the model requires a significant increase in the radiated power compared to what is predicted using standard chemical sputtering rates. These results suggest that the model is adequate to predict the divertor temperature, provided that the discrepancy in radiated power level can be resolved.

Linear plasma generators are cost effective facilities to simulate divertor plasma conditions of present and future fusion reactors. The codes B2.5-Eirene and EMC3-Eirene were extensively used for design studies of the planned Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX). Effects on the target plasma of the gas fueling and pumping locations, heating power, device length, magnetic configuration and transport model were studied with B2.5-Eirene. Effects of tilted or vertical targets were calculated with EMC3-Eirene and showed that spreading the incident flux over a larger area leads to lower density, higher temperature and off-axis profile peaking in front of the target. The simulations indicate that with sufficient heating power MPEX can reach target plasma conditions that are similar to those expected in the ITER divertor. B2.5-Eirene simulations of the MAGPIE experiment have been carried out in order to establish an additional benchmark with experimental data from a linear device with helicon wave heating.

Heat load calculations have indicated the possible overloading of the ends of the water-cooled divertor facing the pumping gap beyond their technological limit. The intention of the scraper is the interception of some of the plasma fluxes both upstream and downstream before they reach the divertor surface. The scraper is divided into six modules of four plasma facing components (PFCs); each module has four PFCs hydraulically connected in series by two water boxes (inlet and outlet). A full-scale prototype of one module has been manufactured. Development activities have been carried out to connect the water boxes to the cooling pipes of the PFCs by tungsten inert gas internal orbital welding. This prototype was successfully tested in the GLADIS facility with 17 MW/m2 for 500 cycles. The results of these activities have confirmed the possible technological basis for a fabrication of the water-cooled scraper.

The EMC3-Eirene code is improved in many aspects. Ad hoc boundary conditions for intrinsic impurities at the SOL-core interface are removed by implicitly coupling to a 1D core model. Non-uniform cross-field transport coefficients are allowed in the new code version. A particle splitting technique is implemented for improving the Monte Carlo statistic in low-temperature ranges of most interest. Domain splitting, which was possible for the toroidal direction only, is now feasible for all three directions, facilitating mesh optimization for any specific divertor configuration. Stellarator-specific constraints on mesh construction have been relaxed. Axisymmetric neutral-facing components have been moved to cylindrical coordinates. High density (≥6 × 1019 m−3), low temperature (2–6 eV) helicon discharges in the Prototype Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX) are analyzed with the coupled multifluid plasma, kinetic neutrals code B2.5-Eirene. The interpretative analyses are constrained by data from multiple diagnostics, including Langmuir probes, Mach probes, filterscopes, infrared TV system, Thomson scattering, and baratrons. The objectives of the transport simulations include: investigation of the effects of heating, fueling, and plasma production; pumping, and assumed radial transport models on the calculated density and temperature distributions; plasma flow profiles and power balance. The primary objective in this report is to investigate the effects of the radial transport model in full plasma (the entire length of the plasma column in Proto-MPEX) data-constrained simulations. Results from three assumed forms of the radial transport coefficients are presented, including spatially constant, radially decreasing, and Bohm (D,χ ∼ Te/|B|). The results from each of the three transport coefficient sets agree qualitatively with the core (near axis) data. With the implicit Te dependence, the Bohm coefficients tend to decrease as functions of radius, although not as strongly as the centrally peaked set. The axial variation in the Bohm coefficients is largely due to the axial structure of the magnetic field. In order to more completely demonstrate the I-mode regime as a compelling fusion reactor operating scenario, the first dedicated attempts at I-mode radiative heat exhaust and detachment were carried out on Alcator C-Mod. Results conclusively show that within the parameter space explored, an I/L back-transition is triggered prior to meaningful reductions in parallel heat flux, q||, target temperature, Te;tar, and target pressure, pe;tar, at the outer divertor. The exact mechanism for the I/L trigger remains uncertain, but a multi-diagnostic investigation suggests the pedestal regulation physics is impacted promptly by small amounts of N2 seeded into the private flux region. The time delay between when N2 contacts the plasma and the I/L transition is triggered varied from 30-120 ms, approximately 0.7-3 x tE, and the delay varied inversely with I-mode pedestal-top pressure, pe;95. Power and nitrogen influx scans indicate that the I/L transitions are not linked to excessive bulk-plasma impurity radiation. It is also shown that in the subsequent L-mode following nitrogen seeding, q|| and Te;tar can be reduced by factors of ~10. The I/L transition and L-mode exhaust results using N2 are compared to similar attempts using Ne where such q|| and Te;tar reductions in L-mode are limited to factors of 2-3. Implications for the I-mode regime are discussed, including needs for follow-up experiments on other facilities.

Thehigh heat-flux divertor of the Wendelstein 7-X large stellarator experiment consists of 10 divertor units which are designed to carry a steady-state heat flux of 10 MW/m2. However, the edge elements of this divertor are limited to only 5 MW/m2, and may be overloaded in certain plasma scenarios. It is proposed to reduce this heat by placing an additional “scraper element” in each of the ten divertor locations. It will be constructed using carbon fiber composite (CFC) monoblock technology. The design of the monoblocks and the path of the cooling tubes must be optimized in order to survive the significant steady-state heat loads, provide adequate coverage for the existing divertor, be located within sub-millimeter accuracy, and take into account the boundaries to other in vessel components, all at a minimum cost. Computational fluid dynamics modeling has been performed to examine the thermal transfer through the monoblock swirl tube channels for the design of the monoblock orientation. An iterative physics modeling and computer aided design process is being performed to optimize the placement of the scraper element within the severe spatial restrictions.

Here, the pulsed application of n = 3 magnetic perturbation fields with amplitudes below that which triggers ELMs results in distinct, transient responses observable on several edge and divertor diagnostics in NSTX. We refer to these responses as Sub-Threshold Edge Perturbations (STEPs). An analysis of edge measurements suggests that STEPs result in increased transport in the plasma edge and scrape-off layer, which leads to augmentation of the intrinsic strike point splitting due to error fields, i.e., an intensification of the helical divertor footprint flux pattern. These effects are much smaller in magnitude than those of triggered ELMs, and are observed for the duration of the field perturbation measured internal to the vacuum vessel. In addition, STEPs are correlated with changes to the MHD activity, along with transient reductions in the neutron production rate. Ideally the STEPs could be used to provide density control and prevent impurity accumulation, in the same manner that on-demand ELM triggering is used on NSTX, without the impulsive divertor fluxes and potential for damage to plasma facing components associated with ELMs.

Toroidally non-axisymmetric divertor profiles during the 3-D field application and for ELMs are studied with simultaneous observation by a new wide angle visible camera and a high speed IR camera. A newly implemented 3-D heat conduction code, TACO, is used to obtain divertor heat flux. The wide angle camera data confirmed the previously reported result on the validity of vacuum field line tracing on the prediction of split strike point pattern by 3-D fields as well as the phase locking of ELM heat flux to the 3-D fields. TACO calculates the 2-D heat flux distribution allowing assessment of toroidal asymmetry of peak heat flux and heat flux width. The degree of asymmetry ( e DA ) is defined to quantify the asymmetric heat deposition on the divertor surface and is found to have a strong positive dependence on peak heat flux.

A major challenge facing the design and operation of next-step high-power steady-state fusion devices is to develop a viable divertor solution with order-of-magnitude increases in power handling capability relative to present experience, while having acceptable divertor target plate erosion and being compatible with maintaining good core plasma confinement. A new initiative has been launched on DIII-D to develop the scientific basis for design, installation, and operation of an advanced divertor to evaluate boundary plasma solutions applicable to next step fusion experiments beyond ITER. Developing the scientific basis for fusion reactor divertor solutions must necessarily follow three lines of research, which we plan to pursue in DIII-D: (1) Advance scientific understanding and predictive capability through development and comparison between state-of-the art computational models and enhanced measurements using targeted parametric scans; (2) Develop and validate key divertor design concepts and codes through innovative variations in physical structure and magnetic geometry; (3) Assess candidate materials, determining the implications for core plasma operation and control, and develop mitigation techniques for any deleterious effects, incorporating development of plasma-material interaction models. These efforts will lead to design, installation, and evaluation of an advanced divertor for DIII-D to enable highly dissipative divertor operation at core density (n e/n GW), neutral fueling and impurity influx most compatible with high performance plasma scenarios and reactor relevant plasma facing components (PFCs). This paper highlights the current progress and near-term strategies of boundary/PMI research on DIII-D.

Divertor heat and particle flux profiles are modified by externally imposed non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations in the National Spherical Torus Experiment. The applied 3-D field causes strike point splitting that is represented as local peaks and valleys in the divertor profiles. The plasma response in an ideal perturbed equilibrium approach was included in the field line tracing by taking account of the B-field generated by the plasma current up to a certain fraction of normalized flux inside the separatrix and being superposed to the vacuum field. The inclusion of this type of plasma response does not significantly affect the location and spacing of the split strike points at the divertor surface. A modest level of divertor profile modification is found to occur even without the application of 3-D fields in certain high triangularity (δ = 0.65–0.8) discharges, with the location of local peaks and valleys same before and after the application. The intrinsic error field from the non-circularity of PF5 coil is known to have primarily n = 3 component in NSTX and was modeled to be included in the vacuum field line tracing. The produced puncture plot of the field line along with the connection length profile shows that the radial location of local peaks agrees well with the measurement, identifying intrinsic error field as a possible source of intrinsic strike point splitting. The radial location of local peaks in the profiles during the triggered ELM by the applied n = 3 field is the same before and after the 3-D field application. This shows that the heat flux from the triggered ELMs appears to follow the imposed n = 3 field structure.

A set of magnetic diagnostics, including Rogowski coils, diamagnetic loops and two poloidal ‘belts’ of 3-axis pick-up coils measure the magnetic field at several locations around HSX. The two belts are separated by ≈1/3 of a field period and measure the local magnetic field vector at 16 poloidal locations at the two toroidal angles. With the VMEC [1] and PENTA [2] codes, a calculation of the Pfirsch-Schluter (PS) and bootstrap currents is performed. The 3-D equilibrium reconstruction code V3FIT [3] is then used to calculate the expected response of the magnetic diagnostics. The sensitivity of the diagnostic set to features in both the PS and bootstrap current is explored. Because of the lack of toroidal curvature, the dipole PS current has a helical rotation and nearly reverses at the two toroidal locations. The bootstrap current in HSX is in the opposite direction compared to that in a tokamak. Compared to a tokamak, the relative magnitude of each current is reduced by a factor of the effective transform (≈3) [4]. The PS current reaches steady state quickly, whereas the bootstrap current rises throughout the discharge on a 50-500 ms timescale. In most cases, the toroidal current is still rising at the end of the discharge, reaching 0.4-0.6 kA. The edge magnetic structure in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7X (W7-X) stellarators has been shown to have a significant impact on the particle fueling and exhaust of the plasma main species (hydrogen) as well as impurity helium. For HSX, the plasma sourcing to exhaust ratio, quantified by the effective and global particle confinement times τ p * and τ p , H , respectively, increases when a magnetic island chain is located in the plasma edge. The fueling efficiency is reduced by 25% when the plasma boundary is deformed by the magnetic islands. The X-point geometry also yields higher plasma temperatures in front of the main recycling region. When the island is moved radially inward, both τ p * and τp decrease by 10 % – 25 % depending on plasma density. The τ p , H results rely heavily on EMC3-EIRENE modeling which confirms reduced fueling efficiency due to more rapid ionization in the outward shifted island position. These findings suggest that for a helically optimized system like HSX, the plasma fueling from the recycling source, as well as from active gas injection, can be controlled by the magnetic island chain in the plasma edge—which is a basic requirement for a divertor system. This process is also effective for the control of effective helium exhaust times, as τ p , H e * measured by perturbative gas puff experiments is reduced by up to 40% when the islands are shifted inwards. For Wendelstein 7-X, a similar reduction of τ p , H e * was inferred when magnetic islands were moved from the far plasma edge into the confined plasma region. However, the effective confinement features of H as the main plasma species were not affected due to the non-optimal position of the magnetic islands with respect to the highly localized ionization domain during the limiter startup campaign.

The water-cooled high heat flux scraper element aims to reduce excessive heat loads on the target element ends of the actively cooled divertor of Wendelstein 7-X. Its purpose is to intercept some of the plasma fluxes both upstream and downstream before they reach the divertor surface. The scraper element has 24 identical plasma facing components (PFCs) divided into 6 modules. One module has 4 PFCs hydraulically connected in series by 2 water boxes. A PFC, 247 mm long and 28 mm wide, has 13 monoblocks made of CFC NB31 bonded by hot isostatic pressing onto a CuCrZr cooling tube equipped with a copper twisted tape. 4 full-scale prototypes of PFCs have been successfully tested in the GLADIS facility up to 20 MW/m2. The difference observed between measured and calculated surface temperatures is probably due to the inhomogeneity of CFC properties. The design of the water box prototypes has been detailed to allow the junction between the cooling pipe of the PFCs and the water boxes by internal orbital welding. The prototypes are presently under fabrication.

The availability of future fusion devices such as a Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) or DEMO greatly depends on long operating lifetimes of plasma facing components in their divertors. ORNL is designing the Material-Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX), a superconducting magnet, steady-state device to address the plasma material interactions of fusion reactors. MPEX will utilize a new high-intensity plasma source concept based on RF technology. This source concept will allow the experiment to cover the entire expected plasma conditions in the divertor of a future fusion reactor. It will be able to study erosion and re-deposition for relevant geometries with relevant electric and magnetic fields in-front of the target. MPEX is being designed to allow for the exposure of a-priori neutron-irradiated samples. The target transfer cask has been designed to undock from the linear plasma generator such that it can be transferred to diagnostics stations for more detailed surface analysis. MPEX is being developed in a staged approach with successively increased capabilities. After the initial development step of the helicon source and ECH system the source concept is being tested in the Proto-MPEX device (100 kW helicon, 200 kW EBW, 30 kW ICRH). Proto-MPEX has achieved electron densities of more than 4×1019m−3 with a large diameter (13cm) helicon antenna at 100 kW power. First heating with microwaves resulted in a higher ionization represented by higher electron densities on axis, when compared to the helicon plasma only without microwave heating.

The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator experiment is scheduled to begin operation in 2015 with steady-state operation planned for 2019. During the steady-state operation, certain simulated plasma scenarios have been shown to produce heat fluxes that surpass the technological limits on the edges of the divertor target elements. To reduce the heat load on the target elements, the addition of a “scraper element” (SE) in ten divertor locations is under investigation. Two aspects of thermal-fluid modeling for the W7-X SE components are analyzed in this paper using the ANSYS CFX 15.0 software: (1) sensitivity to turbulence models in single-phase and (2) two-phase modeling with the standard k-epsilon model. The results from the single-phase survey of seven turbulence models reveal a significant sensitivity to the selected model in the thermal-hydraulic analysis. Two-phase modeling is completed with the k-epsilon turbulence model, but no vapor generation is recorded. A significant temperature gradient between the liquid-solid interface indicates the need for a turbulence model that can achieve higher mesh resolution in the near-wall region.

The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator is in final stages of commissioning, and will begin operation in the last half of 2015. In this first phase the machine will operate with a limiter, and will be restricted to low power and short pulse. But in 2019, plans are for an actively cooled divertor to be installed, and the machine will operate in steady-state at full power. Recently, plasma simulations have indicated that, in this final operational phase, a bootstrap current may evolve in certain scenarios. This will cause the sensitive ends of the divertor target to be overloaded beyond their qualified limit. A high heat flux scraper element (HHF-SE) has been proposed in order to take up some of the convective flux and reduce the load on the divertor. In order to examine whether the HHF-SE will be able to effectively reduce the plasma flux in the divertor region of concern, and to determine how the pumping effectiveness will be affected by such a component, it is planned to include a test divertor unit scraper element (TDU-SE) in 2017 during an earlier operational phase. Several US fusion energy science laboratories have been involved in the design, analysis (structural and thermal finite element, as well as computational fluid dynamics), plasma simulation, planning, prototyping, and diagnostic development around the scraper element program (both TDU-SE and HHF-SE). This paper presents an overview of all of these activities, and their current status.

Experiments in Alcator C-Mod to assess the level of toroidal asymmetry in divertor conditions resulting from poloidally and toroidally localized extrinsic impurity gas seeding show a weak toroidal peaking (∼1.1) in divertor electron temperatures for high-power enhanced D-alpha H-mode plasmas. This is in contrast to similar experiments in Ohmically heated L-mode plasmas, which showed a clear toroidal modulation in the divertor electron temperature. Modeling of these experiments using the 3D edge transport code EMC3-EIRENE [Y. Feng et al., J. Nucl. Mater. 241, 930 (1997)] qualitatively reproduces these trends, and indicates that the different response in the simulations is due to the ionization location of the injected nitrogen. Low electron temperatures in the private flux region (PFR) in L-mode result in a PFR plasma that is nearly transparent to neutral nitrogen, while in H-mode the impurities are ionized in close proximity to the injection location, with this latter case yielding a largely axisymmetric ...

Experiments on Alcator C-Mod with toroidally and poloidally localized divertor nitrogen injection have been modeled using the three-dimensional edge transport code EMC3-EIRENE to elucidate the mechanisms driving measured toroidal asymmetries. In these experiments five toroidally distributed gas injectors in the private flux region were sequentially activated in separate discharges resulting in clear evidence of toroidal asymmetries in radiated power and nitrogen line emission as well as a ∼50% toroidal modulation in electron pressure at the divertor target. The pressure modulation is qualitatively reproduced by the modeling, with the simulation yielding a toroidal asymmetry in the heat flow to the outer strike point. Toroidal variation in impurity line emission is qualitatively matched in the scrape-off layer above the strike point, however kinetic corrections and cross-field drifts are likely required to quantitatively reproduce impurity behavior in the private flux region and electron temperatures and densities directly in front of the target., United States. Data-constrained interpretative analyses of plasma transport in convection dominated helicon discharges in the Proto-MPEX linear device, and predictive calculations with additional Electron Cyclotron Heating/Electron Bernstein Wave (ECH/EBW) heating, are reported. The B2.5-Eirene code, in which the multi-fluid plasma code B2.5 is coupled to the kinetic Monte Carlo neutrals code Eirene, is used to fit double Langmuir probe measurements and fast camera data in front of a stainless-steel target. The absorbed helicon and ECH power (11 kW) and spatially constant anomalous transport coefficients that are deduced from fitting of the probe and optical data are additionally used for predictive simulations of complete axial distributions of the densities, temperatures, plasma flow velocities, particle and energy fluxes, and possible effects of alternate fueling and pumping scenarios. Enhanced perpendicular heat and momentum transport induces parallel pressure loss leading to divertor detachment, which can be produced by the increase of density in 2D tokamaks. However, in the 3D configurations such as tokamaks with 3D fields and stellarators, the fraction of perpendicular transport can be higher even in a lower density regime, which could lead to the early transition to detachment without passing through the high-recycling regime. 3D fields applied to the limiter tokamak plasmas produce edge stochastic layers close to the last closed flux surface (LCFS), which can allow for enhanced perpendicular transport and indeed the absence of high recycling regime and early detachment have been observed in TEXTOR and Tore Supra. However, in the X-point divertor tokamaks with the applied 3D fields, the parallel transport is still dominant and the detachment facilitation has not been observed yet. Rather, 3D fields affected detachment adversely under certain conditions, either by preventing detachment onset as seen in DIII-D or by re-attaching the existing detached plasma as shown in NSTX. The possible way for strong 3D effects to induce access to the early detachment in divertor tokamaks appears to be via significant perpendicular loss of parallel momentum by frictional force for the counter-streaming flows between neighboring flow channels in the divertor. In principle, the adjacent lobes in the 3D divertor tokamak may generate the counter-streaming flow channels. However, an EMC3-EIRENE simulation for ITER H-mode plasmas demonstrated that screened RMP leads to significantly reduced counter-flows near the divertor target, therefore the momentum loss effect leading to detachment facilitation is expected to be small. This is consistent with the observation in LHD, which showed screening (amplification) of RMP fields in the attachment (stable detachment) case. Work for optimal parameter window for best divertor operation scenario is needed particularly for the 3D divertor tokamak configuration.

The effects of changes in core density on divertor electron temperature, density and heat flux when resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are applied are presented, notably a reduction in RMP induced secondary radial peaks in the electron temperature profile at the target plate is observed when the core density is increased, which is consistent with modeling. RMPs is used here to indicate non-axisymmetric magnetic field perturbations, created using in-vessel control coils, which have at least one but typically many resonances with the rotational transform of the plasma (Evans et al 2006 Phys. Plasmas 13 056121). RMPs are found to alter inter-ELM heat flux to the divertor by modifying the core plasma density. It is shown that applying RMPs reduces the core density and increases the inter-ELM heat flux to both the inner and outer targets. Using gas puffing to return the core density to the pre-RMP levels more than eliminates the increase in inter-ELM heat flux, but a broadening of the heat flux to the outer target remains. These measurements were made at a single toroidal location, but the peak in the heat flux profile was found near the outer strike point where simulations indicate little toroidal variation should exist and tangentially viewing diagnostics showed no evidence of strong asymmetries. In experiments where divertor Thomson scattering measurements were available it is shown that local secondary peaks in the divertor electron temperature profile near the target plate are reduced as the core density is increased, while peaks in the divertor electron density profile near the target are increased. These trends observed in the divertor electron temperature and density are qualitatively reproduced by scanning the upstream density in EMC3-Eirene modeling. Measurements are presented showing that higher densities are needed to induce detachment of the outer strike point in a case where an increase in electron temperature, likely due to a change in MHD activity, is seen after RMPs are applied.

Analysis with the SOLPS code suite (Schneider R. et al 1992 J. Nucl. Mater. 196 810; Wiesen S. et al 2015 J. Nucl. Mater. 463 480–4; Bonnin X. et al 2016 Plasma Fusion Res. 11 1403102) explains the differences in pedestal structure associated with different ion drift directions in DIII-D. Core transport models predict that fusion power scales roughly as the square of the pressure at the top of the pedestal, so understanding the effects that determine pedestal structure in steady-state operational scenarios is important to help project scenarios developed in DIII-D to ITER and other devices. Both experiments and modeling indicate that scrape off layer (SOL) conditions are important in optimizing the pedestal structure for high-beta steady-state scenarios. The SOLPS code is used to provide interpretive analysis of the pedestal, and SOL conditions are used to examine the nature of flows and fueling on the pedestal structure; including the effect of drifts in the fluid model. This analysis shows that flows driven by the ion drift outwards when the drift flows toward the x-point, in a single-null divertor configuration (favorable direction for reduced H-mode power threshold), and they drift inwards when the drift flow is away from the x-point (unfavorable direction). It is hypothesized that these flows decrease the density gradient of the pedestal in the favorable direction, thereby stabilizing the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) and increasing the pedestal width. Comparisons of the pedestal structures in similarly shaped DIII-D steady-state plasmas confirm this change, showing increased density pedestal width, lower peak density and lower separatrix density with the favorable drift direction. The pedestal temperature is higher at a lower density, resulting in an increased pedestal pressure, which indicates that the increased particle flux does not significantly degrade energy confinement. Modeling cases with constant drift direction, but with a change between the more open lower divertor and more closed upper divertor, show that there is increased fueling inside a pedestal with a more open geometry. The pedestal fueling rate for both attached and detached cases is always lower when there is a more closed divertor geometry than in cases when there is a more open divertor geometry.

Recent experiments in DIII-D helium plasmas are examined to resolve the role of atomic and molecular physics in major discrepancies between experiment and modeling of dissipative divertor operation. Helium operation removes the complicated molecular processes of deuterium plasmas that are a prime candidate for the inability of standard fluid models to reproduce dissipative divertor operation, primarily the consistent under-prediction of radiated power. Modeling of these experiments shows that the full divertor radiation can be accounted for, but only if measures are taken to ensure that the model reproduces the measured divertor density. Relying on upstream measurements instead results in a lower divertor density and radiation than is measured, indicating a need for improved modeling of the connection between the divertor and the upstream scrape-off layer. These results show that fluid models are able to quantitatively describe the divertor-region plasma, including radiative losses, and indicate that efforts to improve the fidelity of the molecular deuterium models are likely to help resolve the discrepancy in radiation for deuterium plasmas.

The 3D fluid-plasma edge transport code EMC3-EIRENE is used to test several magnetic field models with and without plasma response against DIII-D experimental data for even and odd-parity n = 3 magnetic field perturbations. The field models include ideal and extended MHD equilibria, and the vacuum approximation. Plasma response is required to reduce the stochasticity in the pedestal region for even-parity fields, however too much screening suppresses the measured splitting of the downstream T e profile. Odd-parity perturbations result in weak tearing and only small additional peaks in the downstream measurements. In this case plasma response is required to increase the size of the lobe structure. No single model is able to simultaneously reproduce the upstream and downstream characteristics for both odd and even-parity perturbations.
