Consider a mobile robot exploring an office building with the aim of observing as much human activity as possible over several days. It must learn where and when people are to be found, count the observed activities, and revisit popular places at the right time. In this paper we present a series of Bayesian estimators for the levels of human activity that improve on simple counting. We then show how these estimators can be used to drive efficient exploration for human activities. The estimators arise from modelling the human activity counts as a partially observable Poisson process (POPP). This paper presents novel extensions to POPP for the following cases: (i) the robot’s sensors are correlated, (ii) the robot’s sensor model, itself built from data, is also unreliable, (iii) both are combined. It also combines the resulting Bayesian estimators with a simple, but effective solution to the exploration-exploitation trade-off faced by the robot in a real deployment. A series of 15 day robot deployments show how our approach boosts the number of human activities observed by 70% relative to a baseline and produces more accurate estimates of the level of human activity in each place and time.

Primitivist theories of truth have been defended by some of the luminaries of analytic philosophy, including the early Moore and Russell, Frege, Davidson, and Sosa. In this paper, I take up a contemporary primitivist theory that has been systematically developed throughout a sizeable body of work but has yet to receive sustained critical attention—Jamin Asay's primitivist deflationism. Asay's major ambitions are to defend a novel primitivist account of the concept truth and to harmonise that account with a deflationary theory of the property truth. I will elaborate a thoroughgoing critique of primitivist deflationism, arguing that we have reason to doubt all of the five theses that constitute the view. Along the way, I will also highlight a number of possible escape routes for the primitivist deflationist, explaining how they can make the view more resilient even as they compel us to rework some of its central commitments.

Predicates of personal taste (PPT) have attracted a great deal of attention from philosophers of language and linguists. In the intricate debates over PPT, arguably the most central consideration has been which analysis of PPT can best account for the possibility of faultless disagreement about matters of personal taste. I argue that two models of such disagreement—the relativist and absolutist models—are empirically inadequate. In their stead, I develop a model of faultless taste disagreement which represents it as involving a novel incompatibility relation between preferences that I call type-noncotenability. This model is available to all parties in the ongoing debates about PPT, but it points up an advantage enjoyed by expressivist accounts of PPT. In closing, I consider four objections against the model that, while failing to fully undermine it, open up promising avenues of inquiry about the nature of disagreement.

Physical activity (PA) is of key importance for health among healthy persons and individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). PA has multiple dimensions that can be assessed and quantified objectively using activity monitors. Moreover, as shown in the published literature, variable methodologies have been used to date to quantify PA among individuals with COPD, precluding clear comparisons of outcomes across studies. The present paper aims to provide a summary of the available literature for the rationale behind using objectively measured PA and proposes a standardized methodology for assessment, including standard operating procedures for future research. The present paper, therefore, describes the concept of PA, reports on the importance of PA, summarizes the dimensions of PA, provides a standard operating procedure on how to monitor PA using objective assessments, and describes the psychometric properties of objectively measured PA. The present international task force recommends implementation of the standard operating procedure for PA data collection and reporting in the future. UNSTRUCTURED Despite the increase in use and high expectations of digital health solutions, scientific evidence about the effectiveness of electronic health (eHealth) and other aspects such as usability and accuracy is lagging behind. eHealth solutions are complex interventions, which require a wide array of evaluation approaches that are capable of answering the many different questions that arise during the consecutive study phases of eHealth development and implementation. However, evaluators seem to struggle in choosing suitable evaluation approaches in relation to a specific study phase. The objective of this project was to provide a structured overview of the existing eHealth evaluation approaches, with the aim of assisting eHealth evaluators in selecting a suitable approach for evaluating their eHealth solution at a specific evaluation study phase. Three consecutive steps were followed. Step 1 was a systematic scoping review, summarizing existing eHealth evaluation approaches. Step 2 was a concept mapping study asking eHealth researchers about approaches for evaluating eHealth. In step 3, the results of step 1 and 2 were used to develop an “eHealth evaluation cycle” and subsequently compose the online “eHealth methodology guide.” The scoping review yielded 57 articles describing 50 unique evaluation approaches. The concept mapping study questioned 43 eHealth researchers, resulting in 48 unique approaches. After removing duplicates, 75 unique evaluation approaches remained. Thereafter, an “eHealth evaluation cycle” was developed, consisting of six evaluation study phases: conceptual and planning, design, development and usability, pilot (feasibility), effectiveness (impact), uptake (implementation), and all phases. Finally, the “eHealth methodology guide” was composed by assigning the 75 evaluation approaches to the specific study phases of the “eHealth evaluation cycle.” Seventy-five unique evaluation approaches were found in the literature and suggested by eHealth researchers, which served as content for the online “eHealth methodology guide.” By assisting evaluators in selecting a suitable evaluation approach in relation to a specific study phase of the “eHealth evaluation cycle,” the guide aims to enhance the quality, safety, and successful long-term implementation of novel eHealth solutions.

BACKGROUND Digital health is an important part of the future of health care, prevention and management of disease and innovative monitoring solutions. With an aging population and rising health related costs, digital health is an essential part of the solution, alongside the emerging big data and associated analytics. To varying extents, digital health and big data are present worldwide. However, consistency in terminology, regulation and implementation differ. As an international network of interdisciplinary experts we review and discuss the digital health and big data landscape. OBJECTIVE We firstly identify current challenges and solutions in digital health development, research, deployment in the management of non-communicable disease and regulation and then go on to establish an ongoing and international collaboration of multidisciplinary researchers and educators; creating opportunities for research and education. METHODS The Digital Health Research Network was established using the Worldwide Universities Network as a platform and a funding resource. The newly formed network harnesses expertise from a wide array of academic disciplines within applications of digital health and big data for health. Meetings took place both electronically and face to face, with a Research Open Day in Sydney and the International Symposium for Digital Health in Hong Kong facilitating wider networking and discussion. RESULTS Many challenges working across disciplines in the digital health area have been identified. These include inconsistent definitions for digital health and big data, a diverse range of digital technologies available across the globe, differences in regulation of such technologies. There is not equity in resources and standards globally. He range of stakeholders involved in digital health and big data relating to health are extensive. It is important that these stakeholders can communicate effectively, with a common technical language. Continued development, education and widening engagement are integral components of developing digital health worldwide. CONCLUSIONS Digital Health is a necessary and sufficient factor in achieving health gains. However, in is critical that digital health is leveraged appropriately and that transformation of interdisciplinary practices can intelligently link digital health with care management processes to make a difference. Debates about the semantics and pragmatics of predicates of personal taste (PPT) have largely centered on contextualist and relativist proposals. In this paper, I argue in favor of an alternative, absolutist analysis of PPT. Theorists such as Max Kolbel and Peter Lasersohn have argued that we should dismiss absolutism (also called realism or invariantism) due to its inability to accommodate the possibility of faultless disagreement involving PPT. My aim in the paper is to show how the absolutist can in fact accommodate this possibility by drawing on an account of faultless disagreement that improves upon a recent proposal due to Karl Schafer. In amending Schafer’s proposal, I put forward an empirically informed view of our beliefs regarding matters of personal taste, as well as an account of our assertions concerning such matters. UNSTRUCTURED The Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) was an early pioneer of open access online publishing, and two decades later, some readers and authors may have forgotten the challenges of previous scientific publishing models. This commentary summarizes the many advantages of open access publishing for each of the main stakeholders in scientific publishing and reminds us that, like every innovation, there are disadvantages that we need to guard against, such as the problem of fraudulent journals. This paper then reviews the potential impact of some current initiatives, such as Plan S and JMIRx, concluding with some suggestions to help new open-access publishers ensure that the advantages of open access publishing outweigh the challenges.

Functionalism about truth, or alethic functionalism, is one of our most promising approaches to the study of truth. In this chapter, I chart a course for functionalist inquiry that centrally involves the empirical study of ordinary thought about truth. In doing so, I review some existing empirical data on the ways in which we think about truth and offer suggestions for future work on this issue. I also argue that some of our data lend support to two kinds of pluralism regarding ordinary thought about truth. These pluralist views, as I show, can be straightforwardly integrated into the broader functionalist framework. The main result of this integration is that some unexplored metaphysical views about truth become visible. IntroductionRecruitment of participants to, and their retention in, Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) is a key determinant of research efficiency, but is challenging. Digital tools and media are increasingly used to reduce costs, waste and delays in the conduct and delivery of research. The aim of this UK Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) survey was to identify which digital recruitment and retention tools are being used to support RCTs, their benefits and success characteristics.MethodsA survey was sent to all UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered CTUs with a webinar to help increase completion. A logic model and definitions of a “digital tool” were developed by iterative refinement by project team members, the Advisory Board (NIHR Research Design service, NHS Trust, NIHR Clinical Research Networks and patient input) and CTUs.ResultsA total of 24/52 (46%) CTUs responded, 6 (25%) of which stated no prior use. Database screening tools (e.g. CPRD, EMIS) were the tool most widely used (45%) for recruitment and were considered very effective (67%). The most mentioned success criteria were saving GP time and reaching more patients. Social media was second (27%), but estimated effectiveness varied considerably, with only 17% stating very effective. Fewer retention tools were used, with SMS / email reminders reported most (10/15 67%), but certainty about effectiveness varied. A detailed definition on what constitutes a digital tool with examples and a logic model showing relationships between the resources, activities, outputs and outcomes for digital tools was developed.ConclusionsDatabase screening tools are the most commonly used digital tool for recruitment, with clear success criteria and certainty about effectiveness. Our detailed definition of what constitutes a digital tool, with examples, will inform the NIHR research community about choices and help them identify potential tools to support recruitment and retention.

In this paper, I discuss two concerns for pluralist truth theories: a concern about a key detail of these theories and a concern about their viability. The detailed-related concern is that pluralists have relied heavily upon the notion of a domain, but it is not transparent what they take domains to be. Since the notion of a domain has been present in philosophy for some time, it is important for many theorists, not only truth pluralists, to be clear on what domains are and what work they can do. The viability-related concern is that it's not clear how a pluralist truth theory could explain the truth-conditions of mixed atomic propositions. To address this concern, truth pluralists should recognize something to which they have not been sufficiently attentive: that some atomic propositions belong to more than one domain. But, recognizing this requires rethinking the relationships between the nature of propositions, their membership in domains, and their truth. I address these issues and propose an understanding of them that is preferable to the best existing account of them, that offered by Michael Lynch.

Electronic whiteboards are being introduced into hospitals to communicate real-time patient information instantly to staff. This paper provides a preliminary review of the current state of evidence for the effect of electronic whiteboards on care processes and patient outcomes. A literature search was performed for the dates 1996 to 2014 on MEDLINE, EMBASE, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, and the ACM Digital Library. Thirteen papers, describing 11 studies, meeting the inclusion criteria were identified. The majority of studies took place in the Emergency Department. While studies looked at the impact of electronic whiteboards on the process of care, there is an absence of evidence concerning impact on patient outcomes. There is a need for robust research measuring the impact of electronic whiteboards on inpatient care.

To ensure the correctness of publicity material ('truth in labelling') and to inform their licensing decisions, agencies certifying or regulating any clinical computer system will need information about the system's structure, performance and likely impact on users and the environment in which they work. This information must be reliable and complete, so it needs to be collected in a structured, rigorous evaluation programme. Clinical decision support systems are generally more complex and their effects less easy to predict than most other clinical software, so pose the greatest challenge to evaluators. They are therefore the focus of this paper.

The disciplinary status of health informatics remains unclear. Is it an art or a science? Does it have a body of theory? A survey was devised for UK academics that teach or research health informatics. Forty-six responses were received, twenty-five from the target group (representing between a quarter and a third of the population of interest). Health informatics is not perceived to have a well-known and clearly definable body of theory, but there is a clear demand for a more theoretical basis for the discipline. Journals and conferences were rated as the best sources of theory and seven key textbooks were identified.

Automation bias - or a tendency to over-rely on automation - is a subject which has been studied in a variety of academic fields. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) aim to benefit the clinical decision making process. Although most research shows overall improved performance with use, there is often a failure to recognize the new errors that CDSS can introduce, and as such the healthcare field has a gap in this research. This paper summarizes the methodology and preliminary results of a systematic review over a broad range of fields into the effects of over-reliance on automation. Results indicate that though automation bias is a significant phenomenon, it is not well defined, and there is a gap in the research which must be addressed to optimize the use of decision support.
