Different types of muscle contraction can cause different damage to the musculature and differences in inflammatory responses. Acute increases in circulatory inflammation markers can influence the crosstalk between coagulation and fibrinolysis processes, increasing the risk of thrombus formation and detrimental cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of concentric and eccentric exercise on hemostasis markers, C-reactive protein (CRP), and the relationship between these variables. Eleven healthy subjects with a mean age of 25.4 ± 2.8, non-smokers, with no history of cardiovascular disease and blood type O, randomly performed an isokinetic exercise protocol consisting of 75 concentric (CP) or eccentric (EP) contractions of knee extension, divided into five sets of 15 repetitions combined with 30-s rest. Blood samples for analysis of FVIII, von Willebrand factor, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1), and CRP were collected pre, post, 24 h, and 48 h after each protocol. Increased levels of CRP at 48 h in EP versus CP ( p = 0.002), increased PAI-1 activity 48 h in EP versus CP ( p = 0.044), and a reduction in t-PA at 48 h when compared with post-protocol in both protocols ( p = 0.001). A correlation was found between CRP and PAI-1 at 48 h of PE ( r2 = 0.69; p = 0.02). This study showed that both EP and CP increase the clotting process, albeit only the exercise performed eccentrically induces inhibition of fibrinolysis. This is possibly due to the increase in PAI-1 48 h after the protocol, which correlates with the increase in inflammation as demonstrated by the CRP levels.

Esta pesquisa investigou as possíveis metodologias aplicadas nas aulas de CrossFit em academias de Porto Alegre. Pretendeu-se através da análise dos serviços prestados pelos profissionais selecionadosencontrar respostas para tal. Para a realização deste estudo foi utilizada uma metodologia qualitativa que envolveu entrevistas semiestruturadas e observações de treinos sem participação efetiva dos pesquisadores, com quatro profissionais habilitados em educação física e que possuem o curso nível um de CrossFit. Para a análise de dados foi utilizado o método de triangulação de dados que procura investigar o mesmo tema de diferentes pontos de vista e a categorização que consisteem organizar os objetos de um dado universo em grupos ou categorias, com um propósito específico. Nesta pesquisa constatou-se que a metodologia do CrossFit é empírica e sua aplicação depende dainterpretação e conhecimento do profissional atuante onde a experiência e a prática nesta modalidade se fazem necessária para um entendimento integral. Notou-se também que apesar das metodologiasaplicadas em aulas serem escolhidas pelos profissionais, as sessões de CrossFit são muito semelhantes e quase não se percebe diferenças entre elas.

Trata-se de um estudo transversal, que teve como objetivo de analisar possíveis alterações no colesterol total, HDL-c, triglicerídeos, ureia e creatinina, a partir de informações secundárias de um banco de dados de um projeto de pesquisa sobre os biomarcadores lipídicos e renais de homens em treinamento de hipertrofia miofibrilar de uma academia situada em Porto Alegre, que foram divididos em dois grupos: grupo teste que recebeu cápsulas contendo vitamina C, vitamina D3, zinco e Serenoa repens, e grupo controle que recebeu cápsulas de amido demilho. Ambos os grupos administraram as cápsulas por via oral, de 12 em 12 horas. As dosagens bioquímicas foram realizadas no soro dos participantes durante dois momentos: antes dos participantes iniciarem a suplementação e após 45 dias de uso. As determinações bioquímicas seguiram as recomendações conforme o método enzimático colorimétrico da LABTEST®. Os resultados mostraram que pós a intervenção o grupo teste demonstrou um aumento significativo do colesterol total (p=0,048) e HDL-c(0,055) e diminuição nos níveis de triglicerídeos (p=0,030) quando comparado ao controle. O grupo teste apresentou uma diminuição nas concentrações de creatinina (p=0,527) e ureia (p=0,044) quando comparado ao controle.

OBJECTIVE The current randomized controlled trial tested the hypothesis that both aerobic training and dynamic resistance training will improve inflammation, endothelial function and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in middle-aged adults with hypertension, but aerobic training would be more effective. METHODS Forty-two hypertensive patients on at least one antihypertensive medication (19 men/23 women; 30-59 years of age) were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of supervised aerobic training (n = 15), resistance training (n = 15) or a nonexercise control (n = 12) group. Inflammation, endothelial function, 24-h ABP and related measures were evaluated at pre and postintervention. RESULTS We found that aerobic training and resistance training were well tolerated. INTRODUÇÃO: O Stand Up Paddle (SUP) ou Hoe He’e Nalu, em havaiano, é um esporte que consiste basicamenteem remar de pé sobre uma prancha. Surgiu no Havaí, por volta de 1960, por surfistas, usavam grande pranchas e remavam nelas, para tirar fotos dos alunos e aspirantes do Surf da época. Mesmo sendo umesporte antigo entrou em evidência há poucos anos, tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre aspectos atuais e relevantes deste esporte. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Para este trabalho, foi realizada uma pesquisa na base de dados PubMed, em maio de 2018, utilizando como palavra-chave Stand Up Paddle. RESULTADOS: Foram encontrados 09 artigos sobre este tema, sendo todos originais. Dos artigos encontrados: 02 abordavam sobre lesão de praticantes do esporte, 02 artigos tratavam sobre a fisiologia do exercício, com praticantes e atletas de SUP, sobre postura, foram encontrados mais 02 artigos, também foram encontrados 02 artigos que abordavam a composição corporal e apenas 01 artigo, que não é relacionado ao esporte SUP,mas apareceu na pesquisa do banco de dados, bem provavelmente por apresentar a palavra “stand” e “paddle”. CONCLUSÃO: Conclui-se com esse trabalho que existem poucas pesquisas sobre o esporte SUP, cadastradas no banco de dados do Pubmed, mostrando a necessidade de mais estudos sobre as diversas áreas da saúde, para conhecer e compreender a fisiologia, a biomecânica, as lesões e dentre outros desse esporte. Se comparado esse esporte com outros esportes de remo, o SUP é o único que é praticado em pé.

Introdução: Qualidade de vida e estresse fazem parte de aspectos da vida diária e dependem da percepção pessoal de cada indivíduo nas situações de enfrentamento das adversidades do dia-a-dia. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar o perfil pelos escores de mulheres praticantes de Pilates em relação ao estresse e a qualidade de vida. Métodos: Por conveniência, foi selecionado o Estúdio de Pilates Helena Rubin na cidade de Porto Alegre, com uma amostra composta de 31 mulheres entre 21 e 70 anos de idade submetidas a avaliação por meio de três questionários. Resultados: O perfil observado são mulheres casadas, meia idade, renda familiar acima de dez salários mínimos, profissionalmente ativas, com frequência de duas vezes por semana e média de 2,9 anos de prática de Pilates. A procura pela prática de Pilates foi, na maioria, uma forma terapêutica para melhorar algum acometimento em saúde que relatam melhora no vigor e disposição do dia-a-dia após iniciada a prática regular. Porém, não encontramos correlação significativa entre a idade, o tempo e a frequência da prática de Pilates em relação ao estresse e a qualidade de vida. Percebe-se que a prática de Pilates pode influenciar positivamente na qualidade de vida de seus praticantes e sugere-se que o Pilates possa agir no controle do estresse em mulheres com diversos acometimentos em saúde. Conclusão: Sendo assim, nosso estudo pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento e direcionamento de estratégias adequadas as percepções dos diferentes praticantes, principalmente, para os profissionais que buscam na qualidade do atendimento propiciar o bem estar a seus clientes.

To compare the responses of velocities, ventilatory thresholds and maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) through a maximum incremental test with blood flow restriction (Tmax-BFR) and without restriction (Tmax-TRAD) in active young people. This is a crossover study. Eight active young men (25 ± 4 years, 173 ± 0.07 cm, 77.19 ± 7.5 kg) were submitted to cardiopulmonary exercise test performed with or without vascular occlusion and evaluated in the entire test by ergospirometry. The first and second ventilatory threshold (VT1 and VT2), VO2max and the speeds to reach the thresholds were analyzed, as well as the exhaustion time for each condition was analyzed. VT1, VT2 and VO2max are similar in both conditions. However, to reach VT2 and VO2max the speeds in the Tmax-BFR condition were significantly lower than in the Tmax-TRAD condition: 11.06 ± 1.56; 14.25 ± 1.03 km/h, p = 0.0002; 13.06 ± 2.04; 16.62 ± 1.30 km/h, p = 0.001. To reach VT1, there was a tendency to reduce the Tmax-BFR condition compared to Tmax-TRAD: 7.81 ± 0.92; 9 ± 1.36 km/h, p = 0.0645 d: 1024. Still, the exhaustion time was significantly shorter for the Tmax-BFR condition compared to Tmax-TRAD: 11:16 ± 0.10 min; 15:02 ± 0.05 min (Table 2) p = 0.007. We identified reductions in velocities at ventilatory thresholds and VO2max when performed with occlusion. These data suggest the possible contribution of this resource to clinical practice, highlighting the achievement by individuals who do not tolerate high speeds on the treadmill or athletes who need to reduce speeds without decreasing exercise intensities.

Summary Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sixteen weeks of strength training on forearm blood flow (FBF) and nitric oxide (NO) production at rest induced by exercise in postmenopausal women. Equipment and methods Twenty postmenopausal sedentary women 60 ± 5 years participated in this study. The volunteers were randomly assigned into two groups: The trained group (TG, n = 10), performed 3 sessions of approximately 1 hour of strength exercise per week during 16 weeks, and the control group (CG, n = 10), did not perform the systematic physical activity. Forearm blood flow was measured by venous plethysmography and the measurements of nitric oxide production by Griess assay. The objective was to verify the effect of low-load resistance training with blood flow restriction (LL + BFR) on the rating of perceived exertion (RPE). In addition, strength and muscular endurance were evaluated. 26 male subjects were divided into two groups: (a) low-load resistance training with blood flow restriction at 30% 1RM (one repetition maximum), and (b) high-load (HL) resistance training without blood flow restriction at 80% 1RM. The training lasted 8 weeks (three times a week) and consisted of elbow flexion and knee extensor exercises. RPE was assessed using the OMNI scale in sessions before and after training. Introduction Some foods are also demonstrated benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and ergogenic activity, similar to that of sports supplements. Grape juice has been considered an important source of polyphenols and these compounds could promote positive effects to the sports players. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the effects of purple grape juice consumption on indicators of oxidative stress, inflammation, muscle damage, global histone H4 acetylation levels, and muscle strength and muscle power in volleyball athletes. Methods This is a randomized double-blind clinical trial in which 12 male volleyball players (16 ± 0.6 years old) participated in three different moments with match simulation: control (without beverage) (WB), grape juice (GJ) and placebo (PLA) (400 mL/day of grape juice or placebo (maltodextrin) for 14 days in a cross-over model). Before and immediately after each match, blood collection for analysis of indicators of systemic redox status, systemic concentrations of Interferon-γ (IFN- γ) and Interleukin-4 (IL-4), muscle damage, by Creatine Kinase (CK-NAC) and levels of global histone H4 acetylation were performed, as well as handgrip strength (HG) and lower limb power tests. Results Consumption of grape juice significantly reduced lipid peroxidation (p = 0.04) and Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) damage (p = 0.01) after the match. IFN-γ levels, IL-4, CK-NAC, and histone H4 acetylation post-match did not alter with the grape juice consumption. Objective: To investigate the short and long-term outcomes of a concurrent exercise protocol (CEP) on plasma Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and the effect of this intervention in the self-esteem and mental health in people with schizophrenia (SZ).

Background Strength training with blood flow restriction (STBFR) provokes similar neuromuscular adaptations to traditional strength training using low training loads. However, there is a need for better understanding of the repercussions for antioxidant parameters and vascular function. Objectives: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of a session of low intensity strength training with blood flow restriction, compared with high intensity and low intensity strength training without blood flow restriction, on the levels of nitric oxide products and antioxidant enzyme activity in healthy young men. Methods: Eleven young men performed three strength exercise sessions: low intensity with blood flow restriction (LIBFR), high intensity (HI), and low intensity (LI). Activity of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was assessed and metabolites of nitric oxide (NOx) were assayed before and after each session. Results: There were no changes to NOx plasma levels under the different exercise conditions (p > 0.05). However, SOD activity exhibited a significant reduction after the LIBFR condition (p < 0.05), while CAT activity reduced significantly after the LI condition (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that one session of low intensity strength training with blood flow restriction does not reduce bioavailability of nitric oxide or induce redox imbalance in healthy young men.

Background The social function of individuals with schizophrenia is usually poor and this population exhibits a sedentary lifestyle. Social participation, inclusion in the world of work in particular, might favorably interfere with the lives of these individuals by reducing sedentarism and improving their state of health. Objective To analyze the lipid profile and endothelial function markers among individuals with schizophrenia enrolled in a supported employment program. Methods Quantitative quasi-experimental study conducted with 14 individuals with schizophrenia enrolled in a labor inclusion program. Participants were assessed before enrolment (time-point 1) and one year later (time-point 2). Total cholesterol and fractions, triglycerides, serum nitrates and nitrites (endothelial function markers) were measured. The data were analyzed with software SPSS 20. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of an acute session of resistance exercise with blood flow restriction in modulation of oxidative stress parameters at different moments. Eleven participants (23.72 ± 3.49 years and 81.51 ± 6.10 kg) were recruited to perform a crossover design with three protocols: high intensity resistance exercise (HI 80% 1RM), low intensity resistance exercise (LI 30% 1RM), and with blood flow restriction (LI-BFR 30% 1RM). The oxidative profile in an acute session at four moments was assessed: baseline, immediately after exercise, and 24 and 48 hours later. The Ethics Committee at the Methodist University Center-IPA (Porto Alegre, Brazil) approved this study. Effects of traditional and vascular restricted strength training program with equalized volume on isometric and dynamic strength, muscle thickness, electromyographic activity, and endothelial function adaptations in young adults. J Strength Cond Res 34(3): 689-698, 2020-The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare the acute and chronic effects of partial vascular occlusion training in young, physically active adults. Neuromuscular, morphological, and endothelial function responses were compared between high-intensity resistance training (HI-RT) and low-intensity resistance training with partial vascular occlusion (LI-BFR), despite the same training volume. The 28 subjects (age, 23.96 ± 2.67 years) were randomly assigned into 2 groups: LI-BFR (n = 15) and HI-RT (n = 13). Both groups performed unilateral exercise of elbow flexion (EF) and knee extension (KE) 3 times per week for 8 weeks. This study was approved by the ethics committee. Flow-mediated dilation showed a significant difference in baseline and post-training in the LI-BFR group (4.44 ± 0.51 vs. 6.35 ± 2.08 mm, respectively). For nitrite/nitrate concentrations only, there was a significant difference when comparing pre- and post-acute exercise in both groups. The torque and rep. Sixty percent 1 repetition maximum had improvements in both groups. There were differences between groups only in isometric delta EF and isokinetic delta KE (EF 3.42 ± 5.09 and 9.61 ± 7.52 N·m; KE 12.78 ± 25.61 and 42.69 ± 35.68 N·m; LI-BFR and HI-RT groups, respectively). There was a significant increase of muscle thickness in both groups. An increase of both isokinetic and isometric electromyography (EMG) of biceps of the HI-RT group was observed. The same was observed for the LI-BFR group regarding isokinetic and isometric EMG of vastus lateralis. Thus, in addition to strength and hypertrophy gains, this study also shows benefits related to vascular function. For practical applications, this study demonstrates a clinical importance of LI-BFR training as an alternative methodology.

Resumo Contexto O treinamento de força com restrição do fluxo sanguíneo (TFRFS) promove adaptações neuromusculares semelhantes às do treinamento de força tradicional utilizando pequenas cargas de treinamento. No entanto, sua repercussão sobre parâmetros antioxidantes e sobre a função vascular precisa ser mais bem compreendida. Objetivos: O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o efeito de uma sessão de exercício de força de baixa intensidade com restrição do fluxo sanguíneo, em comparação ao exercício de força de alta intensidade e de baixa intensidade sem restrição do fluxo sanguíneo, sobre os níveis de subprodutos do oxido nítrico e a atividade de enzimas antioxidantes em jovens saudáveis. Métodos: Onze indivíduos jovens realizaram três sessões de exercício de força: baixa intensidade com restrição do fluxo sanguíneo (BIRFS), alta intensidade (AI) ou baixa intensidade (BI). Foram avaliadas a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes catalase (CAT), superóxido dismutase (SOD) e dos metabólitos do óxido nítrico (NOx). Resultados: Não houve modificações nos níveis plasmáticos de NOx nas diferentes condições de exercício (p > 0,05). A atividade da SOD apresentou uma diminuição significativa na condição BIRFS (p < 0,05). A atividade da CAT diminuiu significativamente na condição BI (p < 0.05). Conclusões: A partir do presente estudo sugere-se que uma sessão de treinamento de força de baixa intensidade com restrição do fluxo sanguíneo não reduz a biodisponibilidade do óxido nítrico, bem como não induz desequilíbrio redox em indivíduos jovens saudáveis. Summary The purpose of this study was to compare the peripheral expression of natural killers and CCR5 in a session of low-intensity strength training with vascular occlusion and in high-intensity training. Young males were randomized into session groups of a high-intensity strength training (HI) and a session group of low-intensity strength training with vascular occlusion (LI-BFR). The exercise session consisted in knee extension and bicep curl in 80% 1RM (HI) and 30% 1RM (LI-BFR) with equalized volumes. Blood collection was made before, immediately after and 24 h after each training session. Immunophenotyping was carried out through CD195+ (CCR5) e CD3-CD16+CD56+ (NK) in peripheral blood and analysed by flow cytometry and presented in frequency (%). Peripheral frequency of NK cells showed no significant difference in LI-BFR group in time effect, while a gradual reduction of NK cells was identified in HI group in before-24 h postexercise and after-24 h postexercise comparison. However, significant differences have been found in relative change of NK cells immediately after exercise between sessions. In addition, HI and LI-BFR groups showed a significant reduction in the cells expressed CCR5 during 24 h postsession compared to the postsession, but CCR5 also differed when comparing before-24 h after session in the HI group. No differences were observed amongst the groups. LIO induced CCR5 response similar to the HI session, while the NK cells remained in similar frequency during the studied moments in LI-BFR, but not in HI group, suggesting that local hypoxia created by the blood flow restriction was able to prevent a change in the frequency of peripheral cells and a possible immunosuppression.

Este artigo analisa a participação do Brasil no sistema Arcu-Sul e a visão dos atores brasileiros sobre o processo de acreditação no Mercosul. O sistema tem como objetivo estabelecer critérios regionais de qualidade da educação superior no Mercosul. Foram realizadas entrevistas com atores brasileiros que participam do processo de acreditação desse sistema. Os resultados destacam que o Brasil tem um grande protagonismo, e, para alguns atores, o processo de acreditação ocorre de forma plena no país; contudo, os dados apontam que o Brasil coloca entraves para o funcionamento do sistema. Se llevaron a cabo entrevistas con actores brasileños que participan en el proceso de acreditación de dicho sistema. Los resultados resaltan que Brasil posee un grande protagonismo y, para algunos actores, el proceso de acreditación ocurre de forma plena en el país; sin embargo, los datos señalan que Brasil presenta obstáculos para el funcionamiento del sistema. The system aims to establish regional criteria for the quality of higher education in Mercosur. Interviews were conducted with Brazilian actors participating in the accreditation process of this system. The results emphasize that Brazil plays an important role and, for some actors, the accreditation process takes place fully within the country. However, the data indicate that Brazil creates obstacles to the functioning of the system. Exercicio de forca com oclusao vascular precisa ser investigado a fundo sob alguns aspectos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito do treinamento de forca com oclusao vascular sobre os marcadores de estresse oxidativo (EO) e lesao muscular (LM). 12 individuos randomizados em Grupo experimental (GE) e Grupo controle (GC), realizaram protocolo de exercicio a 50% de 1RM com um manguito oclusor com pressao de 100 mm/Hg no grupo GE. Foram realizadas coletas sanguineas pre e apos o protocolo. Os marcadores de EO: catalase, acido urico, grupamentos sulfidris, especies reativas do acido tiobarbiturico e carbonilacao proteica, nao apresentaram diferenca significativa pre e pos protocolo em ambos os grupos. O marcador de LM creatina quinase nao diferiu significativamente nos dois momentos nos dois grupos. Em conclusao nossos dados sugerem que uma sessao aguda de treinamento de forca com oclusao vascular nao altera o EO e nao induz dano celular.

Vascular disease is the principal cause of death and disability in patients with diabetes, and endothelial dysfunction seems to be the major cause in its pathogenesis. Since l-arginine levels are diminished in conditions such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, in this work we aimed to verify the effects of l-arginine supplementation (7 g/day) over the endothelial function and oxidative stress markers in young male adults with uncomplicated type 1 diabetes. We also investigated the influences of l-arginine administration on vascular/oxidative stress responses to an acute bout of exercise. Ten young adult male subjects with uncomplicated type 1 diabetes and twenty matched controls volunteered for this study. A metodologia coaching é utilizada para o desenvolvimento de pessoas nas dimensões profissional e pessoal, valendo-se do apoio ao processo de reflexão, aprendizado e ação para alcançar metas. Objetivo: estudara aplicação da metodologia coaching no tratamento da obesidade. Metodologia: estudou-se dificuldades para o tratamento da obesidade e possíveis estratégias de tratamento através desta metodologia. Resultados: (1) a obesidade atualmente é problema de saúde pública considerado uma epidemia mundial, sendo uma doença multifatorial; (2) o obeso tem pressa para emagrecer e a maior dificuldade está em manter sua motivação para continuar o tratamento em médio e longo prazo; (3) o coaching pode fazer parte de um programa multidisciplinar, atuando fortemente na mudança comportamental. Conclusão: a metodologia coaching está sendo utilizada com êxito por profissionais de diferentes dimensões da área da saúde, podendo, como ficouclaro, ser adaptada conforme a prática do profissional que a utiliza no tratamento da obesidade.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do consumo agudo de cafeína sobre a oxidação de lipídeos e desempenho durante o exercício aeróbico. Foram avaliados 15 indivíduos do sexo masculino, com idade média de 22,3 ± 2,7 anos, que realizaram teste de cargas progressivas em esteira rolante para determinação do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2máx) e limiares ventilatórios (LV). Cada voluntário realizou três testes submáximos na intensidade de 10% abaixo do segundo LV, sendo orientados a permanecer em exercício até a exaustão. Trinta minutos antes de cada teste submáximo, foram ingeridos 250ml de uma das bebidas compostas por: café com adoçante (CAD), café com açúcar (CA) e café descafeinado com adoçante (CD). Durante o exercício, os indivíduos foram monitorados pelo ergoespirômetro e frequencímetro. A oxidação de lipídeos foi predita pelo quociente respiratório (QR) durante o teste, e o desempenho foi verificado pelo tempo de exercício. Para comparar os resultados de QR e tempo de exercício entre os grupos, foi utilizado Anova fatorial, e considerou-se significância estatística um valor de p < 0,05. A média de VO2máx foi de 50,18 ± 9,9ml/kg/min. Com a ingestão de CAD, a média do QR foi de 0,98 ± 0,18 e o tempo médio em exercício foi de 24,1 ± 17,04 minutos. Com a ingestão de CA, a média do QR foi de 0,96 ± 0,2 e o tempo médio em exercício foi de 24,4 ± 17,8min. No teste com ingestão de CD, a média do QR foi de 1,01 ± 0,24 e a média do tempo em exercício foi de 20,6 ± 9,7min. Não houve diferença significativa entre os testes nos valores do QR e nem tempo de exercício (p = 0,697 e p = 0,598, respectivamente). In rowing, the standard breathing that athletes are trained to use makes it difficult, or even impossible, to detect ventilatory limits, due to the coupling of the breath with the technical movement. For this reason, some authors have proposed determining the anaerobic threshold from the respiratory exchange ratio (RER), but there is not yet consensus on what value of RER should be used. The objective of this study was to test what value of RER corresponds to the anaerobic threshold and whether this value can be used as an independent parameter for determining the anaerobic threshold of rowers. The sample comprised 23 male rowers. They were submitted to a maximal cardiorespiratory test on a rowing ergometer with concurrent ergospirometry in order to determine VO2máx and the physiological variables corresponding to their anaerobic threshold. The anaerobic threshold was determined using the Dmax (maximal distance) method. The physiological variables were classified into maximum values and anaerobic threshold values. The maximal state of these rowers reached VO2 (58.2±4.4 ml.kg-1.min-1), lactate (8.2±2.1 mmol.L-1), power (384±54.3 W) and RER (1.26±0.1). At the anaerobic threshold they reached VO2 (46.9±7.5 ml.kg-1.min-1), lactate (4.6±1.3 mmol.L-1), power (300± 37.8 W) and RER (0.99±0.1). Conclusions - the RER can be used as an independent method for determining the anaerobic threshold of rowers, adopting a value of 0.99, however, RER should exhibit a non-linear increase above this figure. No remo, o padrão treinado de respiração dos atletas dificulta e até impossibilita a detecção dos limiares ventilatórios, devido ao acoplamento da respiração com o gesto técnico. Neste sentido, alguns autores têm proposto a determinação do limiar anaeróbio através da razão de trocas respiratórias (R), mas ainda não existe consenso sobre qual o valor da R que pode ser utilizado. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar qual o valor da R que corresponde ao limiar anaeróbio e se este valor pode ser utilizado como um parâmetro independente de determinação de limiar anaeróbio em remadores. A amostra foi composta de 23 remadores, todos do sexo masculino. O VO2máx e as variáveis fisiológicas correspondentes ao limiar anaeróbio foram verificados através de um teste progressivo máximo em remoergômetro, simultaneamente a uma ergoespirometria. O limiar anaeróbio foi verificado através do método Dmáx (maximal distance). As variáveis fisiológicas foram separadas em valores máximos e valores referentes ao limiar anaeróbio. Os remadores possuíam no estágio máximo, VO2 (58,2±4,4 ml.kg-1.min-1), lactato (8,2±2,1 mmol.L-1), potência (384±54,3 W) e R (1,26±0,1). No estágio de limiar anaeróbio, possuíam VO2 (46,9±7,5 ml.kg-1.min-1), lactato (4,6±1,3 mmol.L-1), potência (300± 37,8 W) e R (0,99±0,1). Conclusão - a R pode ser utilizada como um método independente de determinação de limiar anaeróbio para remadores, assumindo o valor de 0,99, no entanto, a R deve apresentar um aumento não linear após ultrapassar este valor.

FUNDAMENTOS E OBJETIVO: O limiar anaeróbio, que pode ser determinado a partir do método ventilatório, tem sido proposto como um marcador de capacidade e como referência para prescrição de treinamento em exercícios de resistência aeróbia. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2MÁX) e o limiar ventilatório (LV) de ciclistas e triatletas, durante teste em cicloergômetro. MÉTODOS: Doze atletas do ciclismo e 13 atletas do triatlo foram submetidos a um teste de esforço máximo, para a determinação do VO2MÁX e LV, que foi mensurado por meio de medida direta, utilizando um ergoespirômetro. O valor do VO2MÁX foi considerado o maior valor mantido durante 30 segundos consecutivos durante o teste. Os equivalentes ventilatórios de oxigênio e de dióxido de carbônico, a pressão parcial de oxigênio e a pressão parcial de CO2 (P ET CO2) foram plotados em um gráfico, em função da carga. A partir desses gráficos, o LV foi determinado usando o critério do aumento dos equivalentes ventilatórios com concomitante redução na P ET CO2. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: Houve diferença (p < 0,05) para o VO2MÁX (57,72 ± 3,92 e 49,47 ± 5,96kg·ml-1·min-1), VO2 no LV (46,91 ± 5,96 e 42,16 ± 4,97kg·ml-1·min-1) e freqüência cardíaca máxima (FC MÁX) (188,83 ± 12,89 e 174,61 ± 13,79bpm) entre ciclistas e triatletas, respectivamente. Entretanto, não houve diferença para o %VO2MÁX no LV (81,42 ± 7,61 e 85,18 ± 6,87%), freqüência cardíaca correspondente ao LV (168,5 ± 13,79 e 157,23 ± 16,15bpm) e %FC MÁX no LV (89,23 ± 6,98 e 90,05 ± 1,04%) entre ciclistas e triatletas. Concluiu-se que ciclistas e triatletas apresentaram diferenças quanto ao seu condicionamento aeróbio, pois apresentaram adaptações fisiológicas distintas.

The effective force applied on the crank, the index of pedalling effectiveness, and the economy of movement at 60, 75, 90, and 105 rev/min cadences were examined in nine cyclists and eight triathletes. Tests were performed on two days. Maximal oxygen uptake was measured and the second ventilatory threshold was estimated on day 1 using a stationary bicycle. On day 2, the four different cadences were tested at about 5% below the second ventilatory threshold. A strain gauge instrumented clip-less pedal mounted on the bicycle enabled us to measure the normal and tangential forces exerted on the pedal, while the pedal and crank angles were monitored with the aid of a video system. Based on this information, the effective force and the index of pedalling effectiveness were calculated. Cyclists produced significantly more effective force and a higher index of pedalling effectiveness at 60 and 75 rev/min and were significantly more economic at all cadences than triathletes. The significant and positive correlation between effective force and economy at all cadences suggests that improvement of the effective force would reflect on economy.

O objetivo do treinamento esportivo é o aumento e a melhora do desempenho físico. Quando a intensidade, a duração e a carga de trabalho diário dos exercícios são apropriadas, adaptações fisiológicas positivas ocorrem. Entretanto, existe uma linha muito tênue entre um ótimo desempenho e uma diminuição do mesmo em função do sobretreinamento. O sobretreinamento pode incluir lesão e fraqueza muscular, ativação das citosinas, mudanças hormonais e hematológicas, alterações no humor, depressão psicológica e problemas nutricionais que podem causar diminuição do apetite e diarréia. Muitos estudos sobre o sobretreinamento foram realizados num esforço de identificar suas causas, seus sintomas, hipóteses e marcadores que pudessem identificá-lo, mas este diagnóstico é muito difícil, pois os sintomas do sobretreinamento se confundem com os do pré-sobretreinamento e com os do treinamento normal, sendo que é difícil dissociá-los. No momento não existe um simples marcador que possa prever o sobretreinamento; dessa forma, a diminuição no desempenho físico ainda é considerada o padrão-ouro. Marcadores hormonais, bioquímicos, imunes, psicológicos e o estresse oxidativo podem dar informações relevantes para um diagnóstico preciso e confiável para o sobretreinamento.El objetivo del entrenamiento deportivo es el aumento y la mejora del desempeño físico. Cuando la intensidad, la duración y la carga de trabajo diaria de los ejercicios son apropiadas, ocurren adaptaciones fisiológicas positivas. Sin embargo, existe una línea muy tenue entre un desempeño óptimo y una disminución del mismo, en función del sobreentrenamiento. El sobreentrenamiento puede incluir lesión y debilidad muscular, activación de las citosinas, cambios hormonales y hematológicas, alteraciones en el humor, depresión psicológica y problemas nutricionales que pueden causar disminución del apetito y diarrea. Se han realizado muchos estudios sobre el sobreentrenamiento en un esfuerzo de identificar sus causas, sus síntomas, hipótesis y marcadores que pudiesen identificarlo, mas este diagnóstico es muy difícil, pues los síntomas de sobreentrenamiento se confunden con los de pré-sobreentrenamiento y con los de entrenamiento normal, de ahí que es difícil disociarlos. Hasta el momento no existe un simple marcador que pueda prever el sobreentrenamiento, de esta forma, la disminución en el desempeño físico aún es considerada oro padrón. Marcadores hormonales, bioquímicos, inmunes, psicológicos y el estrés oxidativo pueden dar informaciones relevantes para un diagnóstico preciso y confiable para el sobreentrenamiento.The aim of the sports training is the increase and the improvement of the physical performance. Whenever the intensity, duration and the daily working load are not appropriate, positive physiological adaptations occur. However, there is a fairly subtle delimitation between an outstanding performance and a decrease in it due to overtraining. Overtraining may include: lesion and muscular weakness; cytosine activation; hormonal and hematological alterations; mood swings; psychological depression and nutritional problems which may lead to loss appetite and diarrhea. Several studies about overtraining have been conducted with the effort to identify its causes, symptoms, hypotheses, besides the markers that could identify it. Nevertheless, its diagnosis is very difficult since the overtraining symptoms are similar to the ones from pre-overtraining and to the ones from normal training, making it difficult to dissociate them. Currently, there is not a single marker that could predict overtraining, thus, the decrease in physical performance is still considered the gold-standard. Hormonal, biochemical, immune and psychological markers, besides the oxidative stress, may provide relevant information for an accurate and trustworthy diagnosis on overtraining.

The development of specific training designed to enhance physiological aspects of performance relies heavily on the availability of accurate and validity physiological data. In the combat sport of Wushu, katas are used to develop aerobic fitness. It is arguably important to assess and monitor heart rate (HR) and lactate (La) responses when designing effective training programs. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate heart rate and lactate responses to forms execution among Wushu combatants. Male elite modern Wushu athletes (n = 4) from a South Brazilian regional team participated in the study. Athletes were aged 22.5 ± 2.08 years old and had at least eight years of Wushu experience. Athletes carried out the Changquan and Daoshu forms in random order, HR and La were measured pre- and post-exercise. Results indicate that HR was 176 ± 3 and 176 ± 2 bpm and La was 4.38 ± 1.3 and 5.15 ± 1.07 mmol·l-1 for Changquan and Daoshu forms, respectively. There were no significantly differences in HR and La between the two forms. HR values represent 89.2 ± 1.1 and 89.1 ± 1.8% of age-predicted maximal heart rate and lactate was near of 4 mmol·l-1 point. In conclusion, training programs to Wushu combatants could target the range of physiological values cited above with no differences between two forms

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o dispendio energetico em jogos de videogame ativo (exergames) e comparar as modalidades de jogo tenis, natacao e boxe, considerando as variaveis equivalentes metabolicos (METs), frequencia cardiaca e escala subjetiva de esforco. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com amostra de 20 criancas, idades entre 8 e 10 anos, do sexo feminino e masculino. Foi previamente estabelecido que os participantes realizassem 30 minutos de atividade nos jogos virtuais de tenis, natacao e boxe, respectivamente, utilizando console Nintendo Wii ®. O tempo de pratica foi dividido em tres etapas de 10 minutos para cada modalidade com 5 minutos de intervalo entre as etapas. Foi mensurado peso corporal, estatura, consumo de oxigenio, frequencia cardiaca e escala subjetiva de esforco. Foram encontrados valores de media e desvio padrao de 3,1±1,5 METs, 5,2±2,5 METs, 5,63±2,2 METs para as tres modalidades respectivamente. Houve diferenca estatisticamente significativa entre tenis e natacao (IC95%: -3,759; -0,4188) e tenis e boxe (IC95%: -4,170; -0,8723) na variavel METS, entre tenis e natacao (IC95%: -30,59; -9,807) e tenis e boxe (IC95%: -33,19; -12,41) na variavel frequencia cardiaca. Nao foi encontrado resultado estatisticamente significativo entre as modalidades na variavel BORG. Observou-se que 25% da amostra realizou atividade fisica leve, 40% atividade fisica moderada e 35% atividade fisica vigorosa. Portanto, nosso estudo indica que a pratica de exergames permite que os praticantes realizem atividade fisica que alcance niveis moderado a vigoroso, podendo ser recomendado para criancas como uma forma das mesmas alcancarem as recomendacoes de atividade fisica.

Objetivos: Comparar os efeitos de dois programas de exercícios, treinamento concorrente e corrida em piscina funda, associados à orientação nutricional, na perda de peso e composição corporal de obesos. Métodos: Cinquenta indivíduos foram divididos em dois grupos, conforme o tipo de programa de treinamento físico. Um dos grupos, composto por 23 indivíduos, foi submetido a um treinamento concorrente (aeróbico e força); e 27 foram submetidos a corrida em piscina funda (aeróbico). Todos receberam a mesma orientação nutricional. Os participantes foram avaliados quanto ao peso, altura, circunferências, índice de massa corporal e composição corporal (massa gorda e massa magra), antes e após 45 dias do programa. Para análise das variáveis entre os grupos foi aplicado o teste t de Student e para avaliar o efeito da perda de peso nas demais variáveis, a correlação linear de Pearson. O nível de significância adotado foi de menos de 0,05. Resultados: A idade média dos participantes foi 48,1±12 anos, sendo 42 (84%) do gênero feminino. Após 45 dias de intervenção, 42 indivíduos perderam em média 2,96% do peso inicial, com redução significativa em todas as variáveis antropométricas, exceto da massa magra. Não houve diferença significativa na perda de peso e na composição corporal entre os indivíduos que praticaram o treinamento concorrente e os que praticaram corrida em piscina funda. Conclusões: Os dois grupos submetidos a treinamento físico e intervenção nutricional apresentaram perda de peso e alteração positiva na composição corporal, sem predomínio de efeito entre os tipos de exercício. Aims: To compare the effects of two exercise programs, concurrent training and running in deep water, associated with nutritional counseling, in weight loss and body composition in obese individuals. Methods: Fifty subjects were divided into two groups according to the type of physical training program. One group, composed of 23 individuals, underwent a concurrent training (aerobic and strength); and 27 underwent deep water running (aerobic). All received the same nutritional counseling. Participants were assessed for weight, height, girth, body mass index and body composition (fat mass and lean mass) before and after 45 days of the program. Student’s t test was applied for analysis of variables between groups and Pearson correlation test was used to evaluate the effect of weight loss in the other variables. The significance level was set at less than 0.05. Results: The mean age of participants was 48.1±12 years and 42 (84%) were female. After 45 days of intervention, 42 individuals lost a medium of 2.96% of initial weight, with significant reductions in all anthropometric variables, except the lean mass. There was no significant difference in weight loss and body composition among individuals who practiced concurrent training or practiced running in deep water. Conclusions: Both groups that underwent physical training and nutritional intervention showed weight loss and a positive change in body composition, without predominant effect between the exercise types.

HR values represent 89.2 ± 1.1 and 89.1 ± 1.8% of age-predicted maximal heart rate and lactate was near of 4 mmol·l(-1) point. In conclusion, training programs to Wushu combatants could target the range of physiological values cited above with no differences between two forms. Obesity is a multifactor chronic disease and its incidence has been increasing over the years and is being considered a public health problem. It is characterized by a chronic state of low grade inflammation, in which the C-reactive protein levels are usually increased. This inflammatory process can change the endothelial function in these individuals, since elevated levels of C-reactive protein are related to a low production of nitric oxide, which is responsible for the endothelium vasodilation. Several studies have demonstrated the influence of polymorphisms in the genes of C-reactive protein and of the endothelial nitric oxide synthesis enzyme in obese and healthy individuals. Thus this literature review aims at discussing the relationship between obesity and C-reactive protein levels and endothelial function, as well as to elucidate the association of genetic factors. Scientific articles from the databases PubMed, Science Direct and Scielo were consulted, using the following keywords and combinations of them: C-reactive protein, function/endothelial dysfunction, polymorphism and obesity. Thus, we concluded that obese individuals have elevated levels of C-reactive protein as a result of excess of body fat and this implies a reduction in nitric oxide synthesis. All these factors can be influenced by polymorphisms in regulatory genes of the production of these proteins. É caracterizada por um estado crônico de baixo grau de inflamação, no qual os níveis de proteína C reativa geralmente estão aumentados. Esse processo inflamatório pode alterar a função endotelial nesses indivíduos, uma vez que os níveis elevados de proteína C reativa estão relacionados a uma baixa produção de óxido nítrico, o qual é responsável pela vasodilatação do endotélio. Vários estudos têm demonstrado a influência de polimorfismos nos genes da proteína C reativa e da enzima óxido nítrico sintase endotelial em indivíduos obesos e saudáveis. Dessa forma, esta revisão de literatura tem como objetivo discutir a relação da obesidade com níveis de PCR e função endotelial, bem como elucidar a associação de fatores genéticos. Foram consultados artigos científicos dos bancos de dados PubMed, Science Direct e Scielo, utilizando os seguintes descritores e combinações entre eles: proteína C reativa, função/ disfunção endotelial, polimorfismo e obesidade e seus respectivos em inglês. Com isso, concluímos que indivíduos obesos apresentam elevados níveis de proteína C reativa, em decorrência do excesso de gordura corporal, e isso implica uma redução na síntese de óxido nítrico. Todos esses fatores podem ser influenciados por polimorfismos nos genes reguladores da produção dessas proteínas.

O sobretreinamento (ST) é um fenômeno esportivo complexo e multifatorial; e atualmente não existe nenhum marcador independente que possa diagnosticá- lo. Interessantemente, alguns sintomas do ST apresentam relação com os efeitos da ß-endorfina (ß-end1-31). Alguns de seus efeitos são importantes para o treinamento, como analgesia, maior tolerância ao lactato e euforia do exercício. Esses efeitos podem ser revertidos por destreinamento ou por ST, ocasionando diminuição no desempenho, redução da tolerância à carga e depressão. O exercício físico é o principal estímulo da ß-end1-31, pois sua secreção é volume/intensidade dependente, tanto para exercícios aeróbios quanto anaeróbios. No entanto, o treinamento excessivo pode diminuir suas concentrações, alterando assim seus efeitos benéficos para o treinamento. Portanto, a ß-end1-31 poderia ser utilizada como um marcador adicional de ST, principalmente porque seus efeitos apresentam extensa relação com os sintomas do ST. Overtraining (OT) is a complex and multifactorial sport phenomenon, and there is no independent marker that can diagnose OT. Interestingly, some symptoms of OT are related to ß-endorphin (ß-end1-31) effects. Some of its effects, such as analgesia, increasing lactate tolerance, and exercise-induced euphoria, are important for training. These effects can be reverted by detraining or OT, which may cause decrease in performance, reduced load tolerance, and depression. The main stimulus for ß-end1-31 secretion is to exercise because its secretion is volume/intensity dependent for both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Excess training, however, may reduce ß-end1-31 concentrations, thus altering its beneficial effects. Therefore, ß-end1-31 could be used as an additional OT marker, mainly because its effects are strongly related to OT symptoms.

Individuals of O blood group have significantly lower plasma levels of either Factor VIII (FVIII) or the von Willebrand factor (vWF). Conversely, there is accumulating evidence that elevated FVIII—vWF levels may represent an important risk factor for ischemic heart and venous thromboembolic disease. In this study, individuals exercised for 20 minutes at 10% below the first ventilatory threshold (aerobic threshold), which corresponds to 48% of maximum oxygen uptake. People with non-O blood group show higher resting and postexercise vWF levels compared with those of O blood group, as evidenced by a lower maximal heart rate. The groups were compared using the ANOVA one-way test, and a P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. These results could change the way in which exercise training is designed for both healthy and sick individuals because O group individuals could have a more thrombogenic response to exercise.

O objetivo do treinamento esportivo é o aumento e a melhora do desempenho físico. Quando a intensidade, a duração e a carga de trabalho diário dos exercícios são apropriadas, adaptações fisiológicas positivas ocorrem. Entretanto, existe uma linha muito tênue entre um ótimo desempenho e uma diminuição do mesmo em função do sobretreinamento. O sobretreinamento pode incluir lesão e fraqueza muscular, ativação das citosinas, mudanças hormonais e hematológicas, alterações no humor, depressão psicológica e problemas nutricionais que podem causar diminuição do apetite e diarréia. Muitos estudos sobre o sobretreinamento foram realizados num esforço de identificar suas causas, seus sintomas, hipóteses e marcadores que pudessem identificá-lo, mas este diagnóstico é muito difícil, pois os sintomas do sobretreinamento se confundem com os do pré-sobretreinamento e com os do treinamento normal, sendo que é difícil dissociá-los. No momento não existe um simples marcador que possa prever o sobretreinamento; dessa forma, a diminuição no desempenho físico ainda é considerada o padrão-ouro. Marcadores hormonais, bioquímicos, imunes, psicológicos e o estresse oxidativo podem dar informações relevantes para um diagnóstico preciso e confiável para o sobretreinamento. The aim of the sports training is the increase and the improvement of the physical performance. Whenever the intensity, duration and the daily working load are not appropriate, positive physiological adaptations occur. However, there is a fairly subtle delimitation between an outstanding performance and a decrease in it due to overtraining. Overtraining may include: lesion and muscular weakness; cytosine activation; hormonal and hematological alterations; mood swings; psychological depression and nutritional problems which may lead to loss appetite and diarrhea. Several studies about overtraining have been conducted with the effort to identify its causes, symptoms, hypotheses, besides the markers that could identify it. Nevertheless, its diagnosis is very difficult since the overtraining symptoms are similar to the ones from pre-overtraining and to the ones from normal training, making it difficult to dissociate them. Currently, there is not a single marker that could predict overtraining, thus, the decrease in physical performance is still considered the gold-standard. Hormonal, biochemical, immune and psychological markers, besides the oxidative stress, may provide relevant information for an accurate and trustworthy diagnosis on overtraining. El objetivo del entrenamiento deportivo es el aumento y la mejora del desempeño físico. Cuando la intensidad, la duración y la carga de trabajo diaria de los ejercicios son apropiadas, ocurren adaptaciones fisiológicas positivas. Sin embargo, existe una línea muy tenue entre un desempeño óptimo y una disminución del mismo, en función del sobreentrenamiento. El sobreentrenamiento puede incluir lesión y debilidad muscular, activación de las citosinas, cambios hormonales y hematológicas, alteraciones en el humor, depresión psicológica y problemas nutricionales que pueden causar disminución del apetito y diarrea. Se han realizado muchos estudios sobre el sobreentrenamiento en un esfuerzo de identificar sus causas, sus síntomas, hipótesis y marcadores que pudiesen identificarlo, mas este diagnóstico es muy difícil, pues los síntomas de sobreentrenamiento se confunden con los de pré-sobreentrenamiento y con los de entrenamiento normal, de ahí que es difícil disociarlos. O estado hipercoagulante pós-exercício tem sido bem demonstrado, pois aumentos na atividade coagulante são freqüentemente registrados após diversos protocolos de exercício. Um dos efeitos agudos do exercício mais consistente é o aumento da atividade coagulante refletido pelo aumento da atividade do FVIII, dos marcadores TAT e F1+2. Esse aumento é intensidade dependente. Quanto aos efeitos crônicos, a atividade coagulante de repouso não se modifica com o treinamento. Os níveis de FVIII pós-exercício, entretanto, são maiores em sedentários do que em treinados e os níveis de repouso de pacientes pós-infarto diminuem com o treinamento. A hiperfibrinólise provocada pelo exercício também está comprovada e, assim como a atividade coagulante, parece depender da intensidade. Foram registrados aumentos dos níveis de t-PA, u-PA, plasminogênio e diminuição dos níveis de PAI-1 após o exercício. Os níveis de repouso de t-PA de pessoas inativas é maior que em ativos e atletas. Além disso, pacientes pós-infarto apresentaram diminuição significativa dos níveis de PAI-1 após período de reabilitação física. Os dados mais controversos estão relacionados aos efeitos crônicos dos níveis de t-PA. Enquanto estudos demonstram níveis maiores de t-PA em treinados comparados a sedentários, outros mostram o contrário. Resultados mais consistentes acerca dos efeitos do exercício no processo hemostático, incluindo atividades coagulante e fibrinolítica, ainda são necessários. Existe ainda carência quanto aos efeitos crônicos do exercício, tanto em relação aos benefícios na saúde quanto à influência na performance de atletas. Post-exercise hypercoagulability state has been well demonstrated as increases in coagulation activity are often reported after many exercise protocols. One of the most consistent effects of acute exercise is an increase in coagulation activity reflected by the FVIII activity of thrombin generation markers (TAT and F1+2). This increase is intensity-dependent. In relation to chronic effects, resting coagulant activity does not change with training. However, post-exercise FVIII levels have been reported to be greater in sedentary individuals than in trained subjects and resting levels of post-infarction patients decrease with training. Hyperfibrinolysis related to exercise has also been reported and, similar to coagulation activity, may be intensity-dependent. Increases in t-PA, u-PA, and plasminogen levels and decreases in PAI-1 after exercise have been reported. Resting t-PA levels of non-trained individuals are higher than in active subjects or athletes. In addition, post-infarction patients have a significant decrease of PAI-1 levels after rehabilitation. More controversial results are related to the chronic effects of t-PA. While some studies have shown higher levels of t-PA in trained individuals compared with non-trained subjects, others have not shown this. More consistent results related to the effects of exercise on the hemostatic process, including coagulation and fibrinolytic activities, remain necessary. Chronic effects of exercise need to be studied further, both in relation to the health benefits and the influence on the performance of athletes.

Additionally, recent studies have shown beneficial effects of weight loss through diet and exercise in ghrelin concentrations in obese subjects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 5% weight loss on lipid profile, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and acylated ghrelin (AG) using two different methods of intervention (diet or diet plus exercise). Materials and methods: Eighteen subjects (twelve women and six men) aged 20–40 years with a body mass index of 30–34.9 kg/m2 (grade 1 obesity) were randomized into two intervention groups: diet (n=9) or diet plus exercise (n=9). Both groups underwent treatment until 5% of the initial body weight was lost. At baseline and upon completion, RMR and AG were analyzed. Results: Both groups showed a significant decrease in body fat percentage and fat mass. The diet-plus-exercise group showed a decrease in AG (pre: 54.4±25.3 pg/mL and post: 33.2±19.1 pg/mL) and an increase in RMR (pre: 1,363±379 kcal/day, post: 1,633±223 kcal/day). Conclusion: These data suggest that diet plus exercise induced weight loss and had beneficial effects on AG concentration and RMR, essential factors to ensure the benefits of a weight-loss program. In 8 trained subjects (T) and 9 untrained subjects (UT), lipid peroxidation (LPO), total antioxidant capacity (TRAP), superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were measured in the blood before and after three different intensities of exercise on the treadmill, determined from ventilatory threshold and maximal oxygen uptake data, obtained from a maximal aerobic power test.
