The National Academies recently issued a consensus study report summarizing the state of the art and research needs relating to Human-AI teaming, especially in the context of dynamic, high-risk environments such as multi-domain military operations. This consensus study was conducted by the National Academies Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI). This panel, organized by BOHSI, brings together prominent researchers, including several members of the consensus committee, to discuss the state of the art and research frontiers for development of effective human-AI teams that can operate resiliently in complex, data intensive, and dynamically paced environments.

Bimanual movements that require coordinated actions of the two hands may be coordinated by synchronous bilateral activation of somatosensory and motor cortical areas in both hemispheres, by enhanced activation of individual neurons specialized for bimanual actions, or by both mechanisms. To investigate cortical neural mechanisms that mediate unimanual and bimanual prehension, we compared actions of the left and right hands in a reach to grasp-and-pull instructed-delay task. Spike trains were recorded with multiple electrode arrays placed in the hand area of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortex of the right hemisphere in macaques, allowing us to measure and compare the relative timing, amplitude, and synchronization of cortical activity in these areas as animals grasped and manipulated objects that differed in shape and location. We report that neurons in the right hemisphere show common task-related firing patterns for the two hands but actions of the ipsilateral hand elicited weaker and shorter-duration responses than those of the contralateral hand. We report significant bimanual activation of neurons in M1 but not in S1 cortex when animals have free choice of hand use in prehension tasks. Population ensemble responses in M1 thereby provide an accurate depiction of hand actions during skilled manual tasks. These studies also demonstrate that somatosensory cortical areas serve important cognitive and motor functions in skilled hand actions. Bilateral representation of hand actions may serve an important role in “motor equivalence” when the same movements are performed by either hand and in transfer of skill learning between the hands. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Humans can manipulate small objects with the right or left hand but typically select the dominant hand to handle them. We trained monkeys to grasp and manipulate objects with either hand, while recording neural activity in primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortex. Actions of both hands activate M1 neurons, but S1 neurons respond only to the contralateral hand. Bilateral sensitivity in M1 may aid skill transfer between hands after stroke or head injury.

In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Half of states now face proposed or in-effect abortion bans, which affect the ability of obstetrics and gynecology (ObGyn) residency programs to provide abortion training. Prior to the Supreme Court decision, we surveyed ObGyn residents at all four programs in Wisconsin and Minnesota to assess residents’ attitudes toward abortion, desire to learn about abortion, and intentions about providing abortion care in their future practice. We found that participants overwhelmingly support abortion, find the issue to be important, and plan to incorporate abortion into future practice. The reversal of Roe v Wade and its impact on access to abortion training may have implications for ObGyn residency recruitment and training, related career decision-making, and future workforce.

This study examines cosmetics sales interactions involving speakers of Mandarin Chinese. It focuses on assertion sequences initiated by salespeople, and explores the interactional functions of the Mandarin response token dui. It employs qualitative, collection-based conversation analytic methods. 10 people were recruited to participate. Five participants were salespeople working in a cosmetics store, and five participants were customers. 65 min of recordings were subjected to conversation-analytic transcription and analysis, focusing on 29 assertion sequences. In these assertion sequences, the response token dui occurs in third position, and is produced by the salesperson. It is argued that third position dui registers the development of common ground via the prior assertion and the customer's response to it. This is tied to important institutional goals, and foreshadows possible transition in the interaction. However, when customers offer weaker or ill-fitting receipt of the first position assertion, third position dui is much less likely to occur. This project generates new knowledge on sequential positions and interactional functions of the response token dui, and highlights its role in the organisation of cosmetics sales interactions.

The rapid development of unconventional oil and gas resources presents challenges for foam flooding for reservoirs with high salinity and high heterogeneity at elevated temperatures. A 39-year-old man with thymoma-associated acetylcholine receptor antibody myasthenia gravis (MG) presented with fevers, night sweats, abdominal pain and weight loss. Marked splenomegaly and intra-abdominal lymphadenopathy were found. Biopsies confirmed disseminatedThis case illustrates the autoimmune manifestations that can occur with thymoma. It illustrates the benefit of exogenous IFN-γ in overcoming the immune deficit. In this case, its use did not exacerbate existing autoimmune disease or trigger others. We raise awareness of the need to consider cytokine pathway defects as a contributing factor to refractory atypical infections in patients with thymoma-associated MG.

A wide range of materials including mineral dust, soil dust, and bioaerosols have been shown to act as ice nuclei in the atmosphere. During atmospheric transport, these materials can become coated with inorganic and organic solutes which may impact their ability to nucleate ice. While a number of studies have investigated the impact of solutes at low concentrations on ice nucleation by mineral dusts, very few studies have examined their impact on non-mineral dust ice nuclei. We studied the effect of dilute (NH4)2SO4 solutions (0.05 M) on immersion freezing of a variety of non-mineral dust ice-nucleating substances (INSs) including bacteria, fungi, sea ice diatom exudates, sea surface microlayer substances, and humic substances using the droplet-freezing technique. We also studied the effect of (NH4)2SO4 solutions (0.05 M) on the immersion freezing of several types of mineral dust particles for comparison purposes. (NH4)2SO4 had no effect on the median freezing temperature (ΔT50) of 9 of the 10 non-mineral dust materials tested. There was a small but statistically significant decrease in ΔT50 (−0.43 ± 0.19 ∘C) for the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 compared to pure water. Conversely, (NH4)2SO4 increased the median freezing temperature of four different mineral dusts (potassium-rich feldspar, Arizona Test Dust, kaolinite, montmorillonite) by 3 to 9 ∘C and increased the ice nucleation active site density per gram of material (nm(T)) by a factor of ∼ 10 to ∼ 30. This significant difference in the response of mineral dust and non-mineral dust ice-nucleating substances when exposed to (NH4)2SO4 suggests that they nucleate ice and/or interact with (NH4)2SO4 via different mechanisms. This difference suggests that the relative importance of mineral dust to non-mineral dust particles for ice nucleation in mixed-phase clouds could potentially increase as these particles become coated with (NH4)2SO4 in the atmosphere. This difference also suggests that the addition of (NH4)2SO4 (0.05 M) to atmospheric samples of unknown composition could potentially be used as an indicator or assay for the presence of mineral dust ice nuclei, although additional studies are still needed as a function of INS concentration to confirm the same trends are observed for different INS concentrations than those used here. A comparison with results in the literature does suggest that our results may be applicable to a range of mineral dust and non-mineral dust INS concentrations.

Resilience to aging is a biological event that precedes age-related decline in physiological function and is defined as an organism’s ability to respond to physical stress with increasing age. There is a need to identify factors that may predict resilience for enhancing and maintaining healthy aging. Older people often experience delayed wound healing beause of compromised tissue repair and immune response. Therefore preclincal models may be of value to investigate the relationship between cutaneous wound healing and resilience to aging. This brief report descibes an ear punch biopsy model of cutaneous wound healing in aging mice and shows that mice with biopsy ear wounds that heal more quickly have better cognition, increased strength and better running endurance later in life. Objective To examine urologic transfers and rate of tertiary center interventions from 4 geographically distinct academic medical centers. Methods Four academic medical centers were selected for this study including Baylor College of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Kentucky, and University of Pennsylvania Hospital (Penn). Baylor College of Medicine and Penn primarily service large metropolitan city centers and University of Kentucky and University of Alabama at Birmingham primarily service large rural populations. Transfer logs were pulled for each institution over a 2-year period, and a retrospective chart review was performed to evaluate transfer diagnosis and need for procedural management upon admission. Date of transfer, transfer diagnosis, and interventions performed during tertiary center admission were extracted from the transfer log data sets. The transfer diagnosis was categorized into 1 of 11 mutually exclusive categories. Results Overall, 984 urologic transfers were included. Sixty-nine percent (682/984) of patients were transferred to the 2 rural centers, and 30.7% (302/984) were transferred to the 2 metropolitan centers. The most common reason for transfer was nephrolithiasis at 26% (256 of 984 transfers). The overall surgical intervention rate for all urologic transfers in this study was 44.4% (437 of 984 total transfers). Rural center transfers had a lower rate of surgical intervention than metropolitan centers (42.7% vs 48.3%) as well as a markedly higher number of total transfers during the study period (682 vs 302). Conclusion Given that a majority of patients did not require surgical intervention, methods for avoiding unnecessary urologic transfers are warranted.

The National Academies Board on Human Systems Integration (BOHSI) has organized this session exploring the state of the art and research and design frontiers for intelligent systems that support effective human machine teaming. An important element in the success of human machine teaming is the ability of the person on the scene to develop appropriate trust in the automated software (including recognizing when it should not be trusted). Research is being conducted in the Human Factors community and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community on the characteristics that software need to display in order to foster appropriate trust. For example, there is a DARPA program on Explainable AI (XAI). The Panel brings together prominent researchers from both the Human Factors and AI communities to discuss the current state of the art, challenges and short-falls and ways forward in developing systems that engender appropriate trust.

Despite growing evidence that the ocean is an important source of ice-nucleating particles (INPs) in the atmosphere, our understanding of the properties and concentrations of INPs in ocean surface waters remains limited. We have investigated INPs in sea surface microlayer and bulk seawater samples collected in the Canadian Arctic during the summer of 2016. Consistent with our 2014 studies, we observed that INPs were ubiquitous in the microlayer and bulk seawaters; heat and filtration treatments reduced INP activity, indicating that the INPs were likely heat-labile biological materials between 0.22 and 0.02 µm in diameter; there was a strong negative correlation between salinity and freezing temperatures; and concentrations of INPs could not be explained by chlorophyll a concentrations. Unique in the current study, the spatial distributions of INPs were similar in 2014 and 2016, and the concentrations of INPs were strongly correlated with meteoric water (terrestrial runoff plus precipitation). These combined results suggest that meteoric water may be a major source of INPs in the sea surface microlayer and bulk seawater in this region, or meteoric water may be enhancing INPs in this region by providing additional nutrients for the production of marine microorganisms. In addition, based on the measured concentrations of INPs in the microlayer and bulk seawater, we estimate that the concentrations of INPs from the ocean in the Canadian Arctic marine boundary layer range from approximately 10−4 to <10-6 L−1 at −10 ∘C.

We addressed the wide knowledge gap between these two anchoring states of interhemispheric temporal organization. The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to map the trajectory of interhemispheric temporal reorganization from asynchrony to synchrony using magnitude of interaural threshold difference as the independent variable in a cross-sectional study and (2) to evaluate reversibility of interhemispheric synchrony in association with hearing in noise performance by amplifying the aidable poorer ear in a repeated measures, longitudinal study.DesignThe cross-sectional and longitudinal cohorts were comprised of 49 subjects (AHL; N = 21; 11 male, 10 female; mean age = 48 years) and NH (N = 28; 16 male, 12 female; mean age = 45 years). The maximum interaural threshold difference of the two cohorts spanned from 0 to 65 dB. Magnetoencephalography analyses focused on latency of the M100 peak response from auditory cortex in both hemispheres between 50 msec and 150 msec following monaural tonal stimulation at the frequency (0.5, 1, 2, 3, or 4 kHz) corresponding to the maximum and minimum interaural threshold difference for better and poorer ears separately. The longitudinal AHL cohort was drawn from three subjects in the cross-sectional AHL cohort (all male; ages 49 to 60 years; varied AHL etiologies; no amplification for at least 2 years). All longitudinal study subjects were treated by monaural amplification of the poorer ear and underwent repeated measures examination of the M100 response latency and quick speech in noise hearing in noise performance at baseline, and postamplification months 3, 6, and 12.ResultsThe M100 response peak latency values in the ipsilateral hemisphere lagged those in the contralateral hemisphere for all stimulation conditions. The mean (SD) interhemispheric latency difference values (ipsilateral less contralateral) to better ear stimulation for three categories of maximum interaural threshold difference were as follows: NH (≤ 10 dB)-8.6 (3.0) msec; AHL (15 to 40 dB)-3.0 (1.2) msec; AHL (≥ 45 dB)-1.4 (1.3) msec. In turn, the magnitude of difference values were used to define interhemispheric temporal organization states of asynchrony, mixed asynchrony and synchrony, and synchrony, respectively. Amplification of the poorer ear in longitudinal subjects drove interhemispheric organization change from baseline synchrony to postamplification asynchrony and hearing in noise performance improvement in those with baseline impairment over a 12-month period.ConclusionsInterhemispheric temporal organization in AHL was anchored between states of asynchrony in NH and synchrony in single-sided deafness. For asymmetry magnitudes between 15 and 40 dB, the intermediate mixed state of asynchrony and synchrony was continuous and reversible. Amplification of the poorer ear in AHL improved hearing in noise performance and restored normal temporal organization of auditory cortices in the two hemispheres. The return to normal interhemispheric asynchrony from baseline synchrony and improvement in hearing following monoaural amplification of the poorer ear evolved progressively over a 12-month period.

Background and Purpose: Multiple studies evaluated whether patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure reduces the risk of ischemic stroke. One commonly reported complication of PFO closure is the development of atrial fibrillation (AF), which is itself a powerful stroke risk factor that requires specific management. This study aims to evaluate the frequency of AF in patients post-percutaneous closure of PFO and the clinical factors that predict AF detection. Methods: Studies were identified by systematically searching EMBASE and MEDLINE databases on July 11, 2019. Meta-analysis of proportions was performed, assuming a random-effects model. Results: A total of 6 randomized controlled trials and 26 observational studies were included, comprising 3737 and 9126 patients, respectively. After PFO closure, the rate of AF development was 3.7 patients per 100 patient-years of follow-up (95% CI, 2.6–4.9). The risk of AF development is concentrated in the first 45 days post-procedure (27.2 patients per 100 patient-years [95% CI, 20.1–34.81], compared with 1.3 patients per 100 patient-years [95% CI, 0.3–2.7]) after 45 days. Meta-regression by age suggested that studies with older patients reported higher rate of AF ( P =0.001). In medically treated patients, the rate of AF development was 0.1 per 100 patient-years of follow-up (95% CI, 0.0–0.4). Closure of PFO is associated with increased risk of AF compared with medical management (odds ratio, 5.3 [95% CI, 2.5–11.41]; P Conclusions: AF is more common in PFO patients who had percutaneous closure compared with those who were medically treated. The risk of AF was higher in the first 45 days post-closure and in studies that included patients with increased age.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a robust method for non-invasive functional brain mapping of sensory cortices due to its exceptional spatial and temporal resolution. The clinical standard for MEG source localization of functional landmarks from sensory evoked responses is the equivalent current dipole (ECD) localization algorithm, known to be sensitive to initialization, noise, and manual choice of the number of dipoles. Recently many automated and robust algorithms have been developed, including the Champagne algorithm, an empirical Bayesian algorithm, with powerful abilities for MEG source reconstruction and time course estimation (Wipf et al. 2010; Owen et al. 2012). Here, we evaluate automated Champagne performance in a clinical population of tumor patients where there was minimal failure in localizing sensory evoked responses using the clinical standard, ECD localization algorithm. MEG data of auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials from 21 brain tumor patients were analyzed using Champagne, and these results were compared with equivalent current dipole (ECD) fit. Across both somatosensory and auditory evoked field localization, we found there was a strong agreement between Champagne and ECD localizations in all cases. Given resolution of 8mm voxel size, peak source localizations from Champagne were below 10mm of ECD peak source localization. The Champagne algorithm provides a robust and automated alternative to manual ECD fits for clinical localization of sensory evoked potentials and can contribute to improved clinical MEG data processing workflows.

On 09 July 2020, the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan issued warning of a “local pneumonia of unknown cause” in Kazakhstan, which purportedly had a much higher fatality rate than COVID-19. The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan refuted the claim, stating that these pneumonia cases diagnosed clinically without laboratory confirmation, and might include non-laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases. This article aims to provide a rapid epidemiological analysis of pneumonia and COVID-19 in Kazakhstan from January-June 2020 and examine past trends in respiratory disease outbreaks in Kazakhstan since September 2019. Descriptive statistics were presented using COVID-19 statistics from World Health Organisation (WHO) and pneumonia statistics from media briefings by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health. Case fatality rates (CFR) of pneumonia cases for the first 6 months of 2019 and 2020 were 2.67% and 1.42%, respectively. CFR of pneumonia cases for June 2019 and June 2020 were 3.44% and 1.92%, respectively. The number of pneumonia cases and deaths have increased in 2020, but with lower CFR, as compared to the same period in 2019. From 16 September 2019 to 10 July 2020, a total of 80 reports of disease outbreaks in Kazakhstan were detected, including 15 reports of respiratory diseases of unknown aetiology. A cluster of 6 reports were detected over 2 days about the surge in pneumonia cases in June 2020, a strong signal that prompted the investigation underlying this study.

Introduction Penile deformity is the most obvious manifestation of Peyronie’s disease (PD) and key to determining the optimal method of treatment. Other aspects of PD to consider include plaque size, location, and density; amount of calcification; erection quality; disease progression; and penile anatomy. Few standards exist for the objective assessment of these parameters. Aim To describe current options and new trends in the objective evaluation of PD with a focus on penile curvature and imaging modalities. Methods A literature review was performed through PubMed from 1990 to 2017 regarding objective parameters in PD, including imaging modalities, measurements of deformity, and serum markers. Non–English-language articles were excluded. Main Outcome Measures We sought to assess various objective measurements obtained in patients with PD and to evaluate their usefulness in the evaluation, treatment, and counseling of patients with PD. Results Measurement of penile curvature is most accurately performed with in-office goniometric angle measurement of a pharmacologically induced erection. However, new methods of assessing penile curvature using 3-dimensional photography and smartphone and tablet applications can aid clinicians in describing and treating PD. Ultrasound and ultrasound adjuncts provide excellent plaque characterization and assessment of penile vasculature, which can be useful for treatment planning and research. Presence of inflammation can be evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging or nuclear scintigraphy. Conclusion Current guidelines only recommend obtaining measurements of penile length and penile curvature in the erect state. However, many other options exist for the objective evaluation of PD. The development of unconventional resources has brought forth increased requirements for the properties of oilfield chemical materials. Reservoirs with low permeability, high heterogeneity, high temperature, and high salinity conditions challenge the success of the present development methods. Nanocellulose (NC), with many fascinating characteristics, including large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, good chemical modifiability, and good biodegradability, has received considerable research attention as a green additive applied in oil and gas production, especially in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and hydraulic fracturing (HF). The colloidal properties and interfacial compatibility of NCs are the keys to their superior performance compared to conventional chemicals. By controlling surface charges and hydrophilicity, NC fluids exhibit excellent performance in rheology improvement, oil emulsification, wettability alteration, interfacial tension reduction, and foams and Pickering emulsions stabilization. For various fracturing fluids, the presence of NCs can increase crosslinking efficiency, improve fluid viscoelasticity, reduce liquid filtration and lower frictional resistance. Moreover, NCs show a synergistic effect with surfactants in cellulose network structure enhancement, emulsions and foams stabilization, and wettability alteration. These characteristics highly enhance the oil recovery and the performance of hydraulic fracturing fluids. In this paper, the colloidal and interfacial properties of NCs and their surface modification methods are summarized. Next, recent NCs’ applications in the EOR and HF methods are introduced and their performance is compared with conventional chemicals. The mechanism of NCs in EOR and HF efficiency enhancement is revealed. Review of studies has shown that NCs exhibit great technical and economic potentials to overcome the current limitations in oil and gas production. Finally, this review provides theoretical guidance and new research directions for the efficient development of unconventional oil and gas resources.

Trade agreements offer many opportunities for importers and exporters alike. To maximize the benefits of a trade agreement, traders must know how to successfully apply the agreement rules. This article summarizes some basic preferential treatment rules and describes some variations and challenges companies engaging in global trade face in realizing these benefits.

The sea-surface microlayer and bulk seawater can contain ice-nucleating particles (INPs) and these INPs can be emitted into the atmosphere. Our current understanding of the properties, concentrations, and spatial and temporal distributions of INPs in the microlayer and bulk seawater is limited. In this study we investigate the concentrations and properties of INPs in microlayer and bulk seawater samples collected in the Canadian Arctic during the summer of 2014. INPs were ubiquitous in the microlayer and bulk seawater with freezing temperatures in the immersion mode as high as −14 °C. A strong negative correlation (R = −0. 7, p = 0. 02) was observed between salinity and freezing temperatures (after correction for freezing depression by the salts). One possible explanation is that INPs were associated with melting sea ice. Heat and filtration treatments of the samples show that the INPs were likely heat-labile biological materials with sizes between 0.02 and 0.2 µm in diameter, consistent with previous measurements off the coast of North America and near Greenland in the Arctic. The concentrations of INPs in the microlayer and bulk seawater were consistent with previous measurements at several other locations off the coast of North America. However, our average microlayer concentration was lower than previous observations made near Greenland in the Arctic. This difference could not be explained by chlorophyll a concentrations derived from satellite measurements. In addition, previous studies found significant INP enrichment in the microlayer, relative to bulk seawater, which we did not observe in this study. While further studies are needed to understand these differences, we confirm that there is a source of INP in the microlayer and bulk seawater in the Canadian Arctic that may be important for atmospheric INP concentrations.
