The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to better understand the transition from secondary school to higher education regarding students’ assessment and written-exam experiences. We used mixed methods to investigate students’ experiences of first-year university physics exams and cancelled secondary school exams, regarding their motivational beliefs (regarding themes such as self-efficacy and test anxiety) and sense of belonging. Questionnaire findings from 78 physics students suggest those who felt more negatively impacted by cancelled school exams felt less prepared, less self-efficacious, and more anxious in their university exams than students who felt more positively impacted. Follow-up focus groups with five students revealed they felt out of practice sitting high-stakes university exams and unprepared for the new open-book format, contributing to their test anxiety. Cancelled school exams also provided short-term relief, but belongingness uncertainty; students felt unable to prove themselves and questioned whether they had earned their place in higher education. Our findings suggest that the exam experience is central to both creating a sense of belonging for students and building mastery experiences in terms of self-efficacy and test anxiety.

Female students and those with a low socioeconomic status (SES) typically score lower in assessments of self-efficacy and ability in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this study, a cohort of over 200 UK students attended an intensive, active learning, physics workshop, with pre- and postassessments to measure both physics self-efficacy and physics ability before and after the workshop. Our control took the form of material that was closely related but not covered during the workshop. Students benefited from attending the workshop, as self-efficacy and ability increased significantly in the post-test, with the material not covered showing the smallest increase as expected. A significant socioeconomic attainment gap in ability was completely alleviated for questions on material covered at both secondary and upper secondary level, but not for questions on material seen at upper secondary only. In contrast, although no overall significant initial gender gap in ability was found, despite female students having a lower mean score than male students, a gender gap was alleviated for material seen only at upper secondary level. Female and low SES students’ physics ability improved more than male and high SES students’ physics ability, respectively. The workshop particularly benefited students from a mildly underperforming demographic tackling the hardest questions, or students from a significantly underperforming demographic tackling intermediate questions but not the hardest questions. The already high levels of confidence in their abilities felt by the cohort (which was boosted further by the workshop) meant that none of the demographics considered were less self-efficacious than their peers; however, the self-efficacy of female students improved more than male students, but of high SES students more than low SES students. This study provides a valuable contribution toward understanding the interaction between the extent of underperforming and question difficulty, and the features from the Bootcamp can be easily transferred to other STEM subjects.

High-stakes assessments prominently influence what is done in secondary school science lessons ('washback' effects). It is therefore important that assessments of knowledge and understanding gained from practical work are constructed to reward and incentivise effective practices in practical work. To do that, they must differentiate between pupils who have experienced practical work in different ways. This empirical, mixed-methods study identifies generalizable characteristics of written assessments that differentially reward pupils who experienced practical activities through hands-on work, teacher demonstration, video demonstration, or reading about the activity. Conclusions are drawn from 1486 post-intervention tests completed by pupils aged 14-15 in England, from lesson observations and teacher interviews. This study also identifies pedagogical practices that were more noticeable in practical work that was most rewarded by the written assessments: the work was teacher-guided; and pupils were encouraged to be active participants. Existing literature describes negative washback effects of high-stakes, written assessments that limit the use and effectiveness of practical work as a pedagogical tool. We describe ways in which written assessments could be constructed to better reward effective practices in practical work (practices that better support learning), with the intention of having positive washback effects on pedagogy by better incentivising these practices.

Being lectured by a woman physicist can benefit students' performance, motivation, and engagement with physics. However, due to the severe underrepresentation of women physics faculty, these instances may be scarce. Through semistructured interviews with seven women physics lecturers, we used expectancy-value theory to understand the situative nature of gender regarding motivation to lecture. We sought to understand their choices and decisions when selecting their teaching roles, and if lecturing, what draws them toward certain courses. Our study was a staff-student partnership project carried out in a physics department at a UK university. We identified themes of confidence, enjoyment, the importance of lecturing, and the associated workload. The academic women could not relate to the "showperson" persona that they felt their men colleagues displayed. They navigated low levels of confidence by adopting a painstaking approach to lecture preparation, suggesting an inherent, higher workload associated with lecturing, compared with other forms of teaching. However, the women highly valued lecturing, enjoying the excitement and interactions with students, and were drawn toward developing students' knowledge and skills. Being familiar with the content allowed them to feel confident in lecturing. We discuss these findings and recommend areas of support that physics departments should endeavor to offer.

The search for solutions of Einstein’s equations representing relativistic cosmological models with a discrete matter content has been remarkably fruitful in the last decade. In this review we discuss the progress made in the study of a specific subclass of discrete cosmologies, black-hole lattice models. In particular, we illustrate the techniques used for the construction of these spacetimes, and examine their resulting physical properties. This includes their large-scale dynamics, the dressing of mass due to the interaction between individual black holes, along with features of direct observational interest such as the distance-to-redshift relation. This collection of results provides a novel perspective on the physical effects of averaging in general relativity, as well as on the emergence of gravitational structures from solutions with isolated objects. We construct exact initial data for closed cosmological models filled with regularly arranged black holes in the presence of . The intrinsic geometry of the 3-dimensional space described by this data is a sum of simple closed-form expressions, while the extrinsic curvature is just proportional to . We determine the mass of each of the black holes in this space by performing a limiting procedure around the location of each of the black holes, and then compare the result to an appropriate slice through the Schwarzschild–de Sitter spacetime. The consequences of the inhomogeneity of this model for the large-scale expansion of space are then found by comparing the lengths of curves in the cosmological region to similar curves in a suitably chosen Friedmann–Lemaitre–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) solution. Finally, we locate the positions of the apparent horizons of the black holes, and determine the extremal values of their mass, for every possible regular arrangement of masses. We find that as the number of black holes is increased, the large-scale expansion of space approaches that of an FLRW model filled with dust and , and that the extremal values of the black hole masses approach that of the Schwarzschild–de Sitter solution.
