Abstract

Fatigue jeopardises soldiers' lives, and despite caffeine being the approved wakefulness aid in the Australian Defence Force (ADF), its efficacy equals a placebo with unwanted side effects. The US Military uses modafinil as an alternative, but no ADF studies on modafinil exist. 16. Health literacy profile of recently hospitalised patients in the private hospital setting: a cross sectional survey using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ)

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Health service providers should understand and attend to the health literacy needs of their population in view of the known association between low health literacy and poorer health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the health literacy profile of patients treated at a large private hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and any associations between this profile and socio-economic position, health behaviours, health status and use of hospital services. METHODS: A mailed survey was sent to 9173 people aged ≥18 years with a hospital admission between February and October 2014. It included the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), a multidimensional tool comprising nine independent scales, and socio-demographic and clinical questions. For both respondents and non-respondents, we also extracted residential postcode and admission and follow up details from the Patient Administrative Services database. Differences in demographic, socio-economic and hospital use patterns between respondents and non-respondents were analysed using descriptive statistics. Regression-tests were used to identify differences in health literacy between socio-economic subgroups, with the magnitude of these differences determined using Cohen's d effect sizes. RESULTS: There were 3121 respondents (response rate: 35% excluding 154 returned invitations), the majority born in Australia (74.6%) and living in areas of high socio-economic advantage. Respondents were slightly older than non-respondents (mean (SD) age 65.6 (17.0) versus 60.6 (20.8) years) and included proportionately less females (51.9 versus 59.1%) but were similar with regard to other socio-demographic factors and health service use. Participants who did not speak English at home, reported lower scores across several HLQ scales, including those that measure health provider support and engagement. Abstract

A novel, perennial Sorghumspp. hybrid (PSH) [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench x S. halepense(L.) Pers.], ‘PSH09TX15’ (Reg. No. GS‐785, PI 680638) was identified that possesses complete seed sterility, only rare occurrences (<0.1%) of flowering, and significantly greater mean leaf number per tiller than S. halepense. Initial collection of the hybrid was made in 2009, and subsequent evaluations were made in a collaborative effort between Texas A&M University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, and the USDA‐ARS. Winter survival of PSH09TX15 exceeded 98% at three locations in plant hardiness zones 9a, 8b, and 8a between 2012 and 2015 with no significant differences across locations. PSH09TX15 developed significantly greater leaf numbers per tiller (≥11) and shorter rhizome derived shoot (RDS) distances (−50%) than naturalized populations of S. halepense. PSH09TX15 produced annual biomass yields not significantly different than Dekalb Sudax (‘SX‐17’) forage sorghum across three seasons (2012– 2014) at three locations (College Station, Beeville, Commerce) in Texas. Effective eradication protocols were identified for PSH09TX15 to enable crop rotations. As a high biomass genotype, PSH09TX15 provides a perennial sorghum germplasm source suitable for utilization as a hay, forage, and biofuel feedstock with risk of neither seed weed invasiveness nor hybridization with cultivated S. bicolor.

39. Net Heat of Combustion of AN-F-28 Aviation Gasolines

Abstract

Experimental data on the heats of combustion and hydrogen contents of a number of aviation gasolines have been used in deriving a formula for computing net heat of combustion from (measured) gross heat of combustion. This formula appears to be sufficiently reliable for the purpose and has the advantage of making hydrogen determinations unnecessary. The data on heats of combustion are presented in tabular form, and in graphs showing the relation between net heat of combustion and (1) hydrogen content, (2) aniline point, (3) APO gravity, and (4) the product of aniline point and APO gravity. Data are given on the change in aniline point with time, and also the change resulting from the addition of xylidine.

Abstract

A novel sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench x S. propinquum(Kunth) Hitchc.] F6recombinant inbred line, PSH12TX09 (GS‐784, PI 675359), was identified that successfully overwintered across USDA plant hardiness zones 8a, 8b, and 9a between 2013 and 2015. Prior development from the initial interspecific hybridization through the F3generation was done at the USDA‐ARS Southern Plains Area Research Center, College Station, TX; further advancement to F6was a collaborative effort between Texas A&M University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, and the USDA‐ARS. Winter survival of PSH12TX09 exceeded 90% at three locations in plant hardiness zones 9a, 8b, and 8a in both evaluation years, with no significant differences across locations. PSH12TX09 is significantly taller (≥60 cm), requires more days to anthesis (≥16 d), and is smaller in seed size (−66%) than the well‐documented sorghum inbred line BTx623. As a highly overwintering genotype, PSH12TX09 may serve as a novel resource to further dissect mechanisms of perennialism as well as develop perennial sorghum germplasm suitable for utilization as grain, forage, and biofuel feedstocks.
