Climate models exhibit biases in the mean state and in variability across different regions of the Earth. For example, atmosphere‐only models have a poleward bias in summertime jet streams across the Northern Hemisphere (NH). This can result from many processes, including misrepresentation of Rossby waves that can propagate in different directions and thereby interact with jet streams. However, Rossby‐wave biases can result from biased background state of the climate system as well. The propagation speed of Rossby waves depends on jet stream strength, thus a poleward displacement of the jet stream can hinder westward propagation of Rossby waves at higher latitudes and displace eastward propagating Rossby waves (downstream development). These biases then impact other regions resulting in biased atmospheric circulation across the NH. Indeed, in this study we confirm this via regional nudging experiments within the Norwegian Earth System Model. Namely, nudged horizontal winds over the North Pacific can improve Rossby wave statistics and thereby atmospheric circulation over Eurasia (i.e., upstream). However, nudging over the North Atlantic has little effect on boreal summer atmospheric circulation. Contextualizing current increases in Northern Hemisphere temperatures is precluded by the short instrumental record of the past ca. 120 years and the dearth of temperature-sensitive proxy records, particularly at lower latitudes south of <50 °N. We develop a network of 29 blue intensity chronologies derived from tree rings of Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière and Picea rubens Sarg. trees distributed across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast USA (MANE)—a region underrepresented by multi-centennial temperature records. We use this network to reconstruct mean March-September air temperatures back to 1461 CE based on a model that explains 62% of the instrumental temperature variance from 1901−1976 CE. Since 1998 CE, MANE summer temperatures are consistently the warmest within the context of the past 561 years exceeding the 1951−1980 mean of +1.3 °C. Cool summers across MANE were frequently volcanically forced, with significant (p<0.05) temperature departures associated with 80% of the largest tropical (n=13) and extratropical (n=15) eruptions since 1461 CE. Yet, we find that more of the identified cool events in the record were likely unforced by volcanism and either related to stochastic variability or atmospheric circulation via significant associations (p<0.05) to regional, coastal sea-surface temperatures, 500-hpa geopotential height, and 300-hpa meridional and zonal wind vectors. Expanding the MANE network to the west and south and combining it with existing temperature-sensitive proxies across North America is an important next step toward producing a gridded temperature reconstruction field for North America. In this study, we explore the impact of oceanic moisture fluxes on atmospheric blocks using the ECMWF IFS. Artificially suppressing surface latent heat flux over the Gulf Stream (GS) region reduces atmospheric blocking frequency across the Northern Hemisphere by up to 30%. Affected blocks show a shorter lifespan (−6%), smaller spatial extent (−10%), and reduced intensity (−0.4%), with an increased number of individual blocking anticyclones (+17%). These findings are robust across various blocking detection thresholds. Analysis reveals a qualitatively consistent response across all resolutions, with Tco639 (∼18 km) showing the largest statistically significant change across all blocking characteristics, although differences between resolutions are not statistically significant. Exploring the broader Rossby wave pattern, we observe that diminished moisture fluxes favor eastward propagation and higher zonal wavenumbers, while air‐sea interactions promote stationary and westward‐propagating waves with zonal wavenumber 3. This study underscores the critical role of the GS in modulating atmospheric blocking. Further analysis into Rossby wave patterns revealed that reduced moisture flux tends to favor faster eastward‐moving patterns with shorter wavelengths, whereas interactions between the air and sea support more stationary or westward‐moving waves, particularly those with a zonal wavenumber of 3. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), often referred to as the "Roof of the World", has experienced rapid warming in recent decades. This warming has had significant impacts on downstream regions, while its effects on upstream regions are less well-defined. This study explores the relationship between TP warming and the occurrence of summer heat stress days in Europe, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe (EEU). Our analysis reveals a robust correlation between TP warming in both the summer and the preceding spring, and the frequency of heat stress days in EEU, demonstrating a significant interannual connection. During the spring, pronounced warming in the southern TP generates a strong local Rossby wave source, triggering a substantial divergence anomaly that amplifies the warming effect. This mechanism weakens the subtropical jet and strengthens the polar jet during the summer, setting the stage for anticyclonic anomalies over EEU. Furthermore, anomalies induced by TP warming, characterized by local upward movement and divergence at upper levels, intensify convergence and sinking airflow in the upstream region, leading to increased adiabatic heating in EEU. The dynamic response of the summer circulation anomaly, exemplified by the anticyclone anomaly over EEU, to prior TP warming is further corroborated through numerical simulations. The connection between atmospheric blocking over the North Atlantic and the diabatic influence of the Gulf Stream is investigated using potential vorticity and moist potential vorticity diagnostics in the ERA5 reanalysis data set during wintertime (1979 - 2020). In line with previous research, the reliance atmospheric blocking has on turbulent heat fluxes over the Gulf Stream and its extension, for induction and maintenance, is shown to be significant. The air-sea heat flux generates negative potential vorticity air masses in the atmospheric boundary layer. These air masses subsequently contribute to the block's negative potential vorticity anomaly at upper levels through ascending motion in the warm conveyor belt. It is shown that the block's size and frequency partially depends on oceanic preconditioning via anomalous oceanic heat transport and heat content, prior to the blocking event, both of which allow for stronger turbulent heat fluxes. It is further hypothesized that the block feeds back positively on itself through the advection of cold dry air over the Gulf Stream, sustaining this air-sea interaction. This in turn decreases ocean heat content, eventually halting this air-sea interaction and severing the atmospheric block from its maintenance pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is to exhibit validation studies of developed analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 168 micropollutants including pharmaceuticals and several pesticides in surface water and wastewater samples with direct injection using jet stream ESI LC-MS/MS. Method development in the LC-MS/MS system was carried out to determine the best chromatographic column and MS conditions allowing the retention and the maximum number of analytes. The linearity of the analytical response across the studied range of 0.5–500 ng/L was evaluated as excellent, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.995 with a few exceptions such as bentazone (0.993), carbyl (0.994), etoxazole (0.994), fenthion (0.978), fludioxonil (0.985), metformin (0.844), metolachlor (0.992), naproxen (0.990) and sulfametoksazol (0.993). The LOD of 67% (113 analytes) of the analytes included important pesticides and pharmaceuticals was in the range of 0.5–2.0 ng/L. The recoveries of analytes in wastewater ranged mostly from 80% to 120% and RSD (%) values changed generally between 1 and 10. The recoveries of analytes in surface water were in the range of 80% and 100% and relevant RSD (%) values changed generally between 2 and 8. Repeatability studies were performed in the wastewater injected with three different concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 ng/L in seven measurements and in surface water with 100 ng/L in eight measurements. Reproducibility studies were performed by seven analyses on two different days. The matrix effect was further evaluated for ion suppression between the standards prepared in pure solvent and the standards prepared in the matrix, and the matrix effect was found in a range of 16–22%. In real samples, Propiconazole, Imidachloprid, Quinoxyfen, Carbendazim and Prochloraz are the five compounds detected in the highest amount in real samples. This study unravels the characteristics, mechanisms, and predictability of four consecutive record‐breaking heatwaves hitting North China in June and July 2023. The first three heatwaves primarily influenced the northern part of North China and were accompanied by consistent anticyclonic anomalies in the upper troposphere. The anomalous anticyclone was caused by the British–Baikal corridor teleconnection along the polar front jet, particularly during the second heatwave. In contrast, the fourth heatwave was induced by a distinct low‐pressure system, attributed to the Silk Road pattern along the subtropical jet. The presence of this low‐pressure system and its interaction with atmospheric rivers and local topography led to the foehn wind, further contributing to the rise in surface temperatures. Sub‐seasonal to seasonal models can effectively predict the occurrence of all heatwaves 2–5 days in advance despite underestimating the intensity. However, models exhibit limitations in providing reliable predictions when the lead time exceeds 2 weeks. Variability in seasonal weather in north‐west Europe is substantially determined by jet stream variability. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has been well studied as a key representation of this jet stream variability, but other circulation indices are also important. Here the first three principal component empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) of 500 hPa geopotential height (GPH), which broadly correspond to the NAO, the East Atlantic pattern (EA) and Scandinavian pattern (SCA), as well as jet speed and latitude, are correlated with temperature and precipitation anomalies over Europe with a focus on north‐west Europe, as well as measures of persistence and variability. In high summer (July and August), all three of the principal EOFs are significantly correlated with extreme temperatures in large areas of northern Europe. In winter, for much of north‐west Europe, both temperatures and precipitation are positively correlated with the jet speed, and precipitation is negatively correlated with EOF3. There is some non‐stationarity in some of the relationships, notably between winter precipitation and EOF1, and between July/August precipitation and EOF2. In addition to single variate correlations, multiple correlation coefficients are also used to determine areas of significant correlation when combining two or three of the circulation indices. The multiple correlation analyses show that combining the three EOFs produces significant correlations with temperature and precipitation over much of Europe. These analyses provide scope for using seasonal forecasts to predict likely temperature and precipitation anomalies based on predicting the atmospheric circulation anomalies and downscaling them. Improved seasonal forecasts of temperature and precipitation, including persistence and variability, will be useful to a number of users, such as agrifood, transport, energy supply and insurance. The atmospheric eddy-driven jet stream is one of the main features of the mid-latitude circulation. Although mostly zonal in climatological mean, the jet stream meanders at meteorological time scales. The jet and its variability have been under great scrutiny in the past years for their role in the triggering of extreme events (e.g. heat or cold waves) in mid-latitudes regions. Because of the large variability of the jet, the impact of climate change remains elusive. Here we study the eddy-driven jet stream over the Euro-Atlantic sector and assess its dynamical properties in ERA5 and ERA20C reanalysis data set using indicators from dynamical system theory. We control for global modes of variability and aerosols emissions to disentangle the impact of global warming from the impact of natural variability of the climate system on the jet. We find that over the period 1900–2010, global warming decreased the local dimension and spatial variability of the jet. This decrease in variability is connected to an increase in jet persistence and speed. We additionally observe a poleward shift of the jet. Southern Brazil is a region strongly influenced by the occurrence of extratropical cyclones. Some of them go through a rapid and intense deepening and are known as explosive cyclones. These cyclones are associated with severe weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning, leading to various natural disasters and causing socioeconomic losses. This study investigated the interaction between atmospheric and oceanic conditions that contributed to the rapid intensification of the cyclone that occurred near the coast of South Brazil from 29 June to 3 July 2020, causing significant havoc. Hourly atmospheric and oceanic data from the ERA5 reanalysis were employed in this analysis. The results showed that warm air and moisture transportation were key contributors to these phenomena. In addition, the interaction between the jet stream and the cyclone's movement played a crucial role in cyclone formation and intensification. Positive sea surface temperature anomalies also fueled the cyclone's intensification. These anomalies increased the surface heat fluxes, making the atmosphere more unstable and promoting a strong upward motion. Due to the strong winds and the heavy rainfall, the explosive cyclone caused substantial impacts on the power services, resulting in widespread power outages, damaged infrastructure, and interruptions in energy distribution. This work describes in detail the cyclone development and intensification and aims at the understanding of these storms, which is crucial for minimizing their aftermaths, especially on energy distribution. A computer vision algorithm to determine the parameters of a two-phase turbulent jet of a water-gas mixture traveling at a velocity in the range of 5–10 m/s was developed in order to evaluate the hydrodynamic efficiency of mass exchange apparatuses in real time, as well as to predict the gas exchange rate. The algorithm is based on threshold segmentation, the active contours method, the regression of principal components method, and the comparison of feature overlays, which allows the stable determination of jet boundaries and is a more efficient method when working with low-quality data than traditional implementations of the Canny method. Based on high-speed video recordings of jets, the proposed algorithm allows the calculation of key characteristics of jets: the velocity, angle of incidence, structural density, etc. Both the algorithm's description and a test application based on video recordings of a real jet created on an experimental prototype of a jet bioreactor are discussed. The results are compared with computational fluid dynamics modeling and theoretical predictions, and good agreement is demonstrated. The presented algorithm itself represents the basis for a real-time control system for aerator operation in jet bioreactors, as well as being used in laboratory jet stream installations for the accumulation of big data on the structure and dynamic properties of jets. Large-scale circulation of the atmosphere in the Earth's extratropics is dominated by eddies, eastward (westerly) zonal winds, and their interaction. Eddies not only bring about weather variabilities but also help maintain the average state of climate. In recent years, our understanding of how large-scale eddies and mean flows interact in the extratropical atmosphere has advanced significantly due to new dynamical constraints on finite-amplitude eddies and the related eddy-free reference state. This article reviews the theoretical foundations for finite-amplitude Rossby wave activity and related concepts. Theory is then applied to atmospheric data to elucidate how angular momentum is redistributed by the generation, transmission, and dissipation of Rossby waves and to reveal how an anomalously large wave event such as atmospheric blocking may arise from regional eddy-mean flow interaction. Changes in the path and intensity of jet streams have major impacts on regional weather and climate patterns. We investigated changes in the intensity, meridional position, and altitude of the North Pacific jet in different seasons during the period 1979–2020 using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) fifth-generation reanalysis (ERA5) dataset. Our analysis indicates that the intensity and the meridional position of the North Pacific jet exhibit a pronounced seasonal cycle, with the most intense core of the jet in winter and its equatorward shift from 32.75 ∘ N in winter to around 40.75 ∘ N in summer. The jet also has a relatively large latitudinal spread in spring compared to the other seasons. The North Pacific jet has only weakened over the Yellow Sea in summer during the period 1979–2020. Maximum upper-tropospheric wind speeds have intensified over the Sea of Japan in winter in response to the poleward shift of the jet but weakened in spring due to the equatorward shift of the jet. Indeed, the jet has shifted poleward over the far western (125–140 ∘ E) and central (180 ∘ -150 ∘ W) North Pacific in winter, but the poleward shift of the jet is smaller over the far western North Pacific where the jet is stronger. This suggests that there might be a link between the speed of the North Pacific jet and the magnitude of its longitudinal poleward shifting variability. The jet has also shifted poleward over the central-eastern North Pacific (135–155 ∘ W) in summer, while changes in the altitude of the North Pacific jet have been insignificant during the period 1979–2020. The identified changes in the characteristics of the North Pacific jet have important implications for the understanding of weather patterns and the frequency of extreme events in the North Pacific and nearby regions. Northeast Asian cut-off lows are crucial cyclonic systems that can bring temperature and precipitation extremes over large areas. Skillful subseasonal forecasting of Northeast Asian cut-off lows is of great importance. Using two dynamical forecasting systems, one from the Beijing Climate Center (BCC-CSM2-HR) and the other from the Met Office (GloSea5), this study assesses simulation ability and subseasonal prediction skill for early-summer Northeast Asian cut-off lows. Both models are shown to have good ability in representing the spatial structure of cut-off lows, but they underestimate the intensity. The skillful prediction time scales for cut-off low intensity are about 10.2 days for BCC-CSM2-HR and 11.4 days for GloSea5 in advance. Further examination shows that both models can essentially capture the initial Rossby wave train, rapid growth and decay processes responsible for the evolution of cut-off lows, but the models show weaker amplitudes for the three-stage processes. The underestimated simulated strength of both the Eurasian midlatitude and East Asian subtropical jets may lead to the weaker local eddy-mean flow interaction responsible for the cut-off low evolution. The polar-to-subtropical temperature gradient in the free troposphere is a key driver of the extratropical jet stream response to climate change. Climate models tend to steepen this gradient in response to large greenhouse gas increases, due to very strong subtropical upper-level warming. This strengthens the simulated jets. However, multiple lines of observational evidence point to a slowing northern jet over the satellite era, driven by enhanced Arctic free-tropospheric warming and weakening of the gradient. Here, we reconcile these seemingly contradictory results by showing that the CMIP6 ensemble successfully simulates both the observed satellite-era slowdown/weakening, and the speedup/strengthening with strong global warming. Specifically, the observed gradient weakening from 1980–1997 to 1997–2014 appears inconsistent (p < 0.05) with the simulated gradient changes for just 6 of 45 models using Microwave Sounding Unit observations, and for just 5 of 45 models using reanalysis estimates. The observed jet slowdown appears inconsistent with the simulated jet changes for just 1 of 45 models. In fact, a clear majority of the CMIP6 models weaken the gradient and slow down the jet over this interval. Yet a strong majority of the models reverse course under a high-emissions future-type scenario, simulating gradient strengthening and jet speedup. Understanding the key variables that characterise fire propagation is important for a better estimation of fire events and their impacts. This study uses machine learning combined with satellite remote sensing and atmospheric modelled data to enhance estimations of burned areas. It focuses on the intense early summer weather patterns in South Asia during April and May 2022 and explores the relationship between environmental factors and fire spread. The study employs various algorithms, including random forest, extra trees, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), gradient boosting regressor, support vector regressor and neural networks. XGBoost proves to be the most accurate approach. An isolation forest algorithm is used to adjust for outliers in burned area estimations. The comprehensive analysis conducted includes the identification of key variables and sensitivity tests incorporating changes of up to 25 % in natural environmental conditions to assess the model’s consistency. The results indicate that integrating vegetation, atmospheric, and human-related variables with the XGBoost algorithm, and incorporating outlier adjustments leads to the most effective performance (R2 ≥ 0.7), with jet stream variables enhancing the accuracy by approximately 11.5 %. The study highlights the notable impact on fire propagation of increases in the value of 300-hPa meridional circulation index flow (MCI300) and a high 500-hPa geopotential height anomaly (ΔZ500), indicating the development of strong atmospheric blocking (upper tropospheric ridge). As compared to other factors, e.g. land surface temperature, vapour pressure deficit, soil moisture and vegetation optical depth, the impact of changes in jet stream metrics (MCI300 and ΔZ500) was more pronounced, indicating greater sensitivity. These insights emphasise the complexity of fire spread, and the importance of using atmospheric factors to estimate burned areas, particularly during severe heatwaves.

The term jet stream generally refers to a narrow region of intense winds near the top of the midlatitude or subtropical troposphere. It is in the midlatitude jet stream where instabilities and waves may develop into synoptic‐scale systems, which in turn makes accurately resolving the structure of the jet stream and associated features critical for atmospheric development, predictability, and impacts, such as extreme precipitation and winds. Using dropwindsonde observations collected during the Atmospheric River Reconnaissance (AR Recon) campaign from 2020 to 2022, this study assesses the North Pacific jet stream structure in the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). Results show that the IFS has a slow‐wind bias on the lead times assessed, with the strongest winds (≥50 m·s−1) having a bias of up to −1.88 m·s−1 on forecast day 4. Also, the IFS cannot resolve the sharp potential vorticity (PV) gradient across the jet stream and tropopause, and this PV gradient weakens with forecast lead time. Cases with larger wind biases are characterized by higher PV biases and PV biases tend to be larger for cases with a higher horizontal PV gradient. These results suggest that further model‐based experiments are needed to identify and address these biases, which could ultimately yield increased forecast accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Siberian storm track is one of the drivers of the East Asian extreme weather events. Using the daily JRA‐55 reanalysis data from 1980 to 2021, this study examines roles of eddy generation and jet characteristics in setting the annual cycle of Siberian storm track. It is found that there are two peaks of Siberian storm track intensity in boreal spring and autumn. The possible reason for such an annual cycle is explored by analyzing the maximum Eady growth rate over the Siberian region and jet characteristics. The stronger Siberian Eady growth rate in boreal spring and autumn, favoring a stronger baroclinic eddy generation, could contribute to the stronger intensity of Siberian storm tracks in these two seasons. Southern Brazil is a region strongly influenced by the occurrence of extratropical cyclones. Some of them go through a rapid and intense deepening and are known as explosive cyclones. These cyclones are associated with severe weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning, leading to various natural disasters and causing socioeconomic losses. This study investigated the interaction between atmospheric and oceanic conditions that contributed to the rapid intensification of the cyclone that occurred near the coast of South Brazil from 29 June to 3 July 2020, causing significant havoc. Hourly atmospheric and oceanic data from the ERA5 reanalysis were employed in this analysis. The results showed that warm air and moisture transportation were key contributors to these phenomena. In addition, the interaction between the jet stream and the cyclone’s movement played a crucial role in cyclone formation and intensification. Positive sea surface temperature anomalies also fueled the cyclone’s intensification. These anomalies increased the surface heat fluxes, making the atmosphere more unstable and promoting a strong upward motion. Due to the strong winds and the heavy rainfall, the explosive cyclone caused substantial impacts on the power services, resulting in widespread power outages, damaged infrastructure, and interruptions in energy distribution. This work describes in detail the cyclone development and intensification and aims at the understanding of these storms, which is crucial for minimizing their aftermaths, especially on energy distribution.

Abstract The Siberian storm track is one of the drivers of the East Asian extreme weather events. Using the daily JRA‐55 reanalysis data from 1980 to 2021, this study examines roles of eddy generation and jet characteristics in setting the annual cycle of Siberian storm track. It is found that there are two peaks of Siberian storm track intensity in boreal spring and autumn. The possible reason for such an annual cycle is explored by analyzing the maximum Eady growth rate over the Siberian region and jet characteristics. The stronger Siberian Eady growth rate in boreal spring and autumn, favoring a stronger baroclinic eddy generation, could contribute to the stronger intensity of Siberian storm tracks in these two seasons. Furthermore, the Siberian jet stream cores during boreal spring and autumn are located north of 50° N and resembles more an eddy‐driven jet. The influence of adiabatic and diabatic processes on the midlatitude circulation is a formidable research question, especially considering their projected changes under global warming. This study presents the prospects, merits, and caveats of a potential vorticity (PV) gradient perspective as a means to disentangle the contributions of adiabatic and diabatic processes affecting the midlatitude circulation. Theoretical considerations reassess the link between the PV gradient and the jet stream. They reveal that the maximum isentropic PV gradient is consistently located on the stratospheric side of the jet, whereas the gradient of ln(PV)$$ \ln \left(\mathrm{PV}\right) $$ is shifted to the tropospheric side but, in general, is better aligned with the jet axis. The stratospheric shift of the PV gradient results from variations in stability across the tropopause, whereas the tropospheric shift of the ln(PV)$$ \ln \left(\mathrm{PV}\right) $$ gradient results from variations in vorticity. Regions of high PV gradient may serve as a proxy for the curvature of the wind field in the case of sufficiently small variations in stability. Otherwise, they depict variations in both wind and thermal stratification along tropopause‐intersecting isentropic surfaces. Lagrangian "PV gradient thinking" is demonstrated in two case studies of jet streak evolution in a simulation with 1.1 km grid spacing performed with the graphics‐processing‐unit‐enabled numerical weather prediction model Consortium for Small‐Scale Modelling featuring on‐line air parcel trajectories. Dry deformation drives the Lagrangian evolution of the PV gradient in the first case, whereas there is a pronounced influence of diabatic modification in the second case. Development of energy-efficient and high-performance bioreactors requires progress in methods for assessing the key parameters of the biosynthesis process. With a wide variety of approaches and methods for determining the phase contact area in gas–liquid flows, the question of obtaining its accurate quantitative estimation remains open. Particularly challenging are the issues of getting information about the mass transfer coefficients instantly, as well as the development of predictive capabilities for the implementation of effective flow control in continuous fermentation both on the laboratory and industrial scales. Motivated by the opportunity to explore the possibility of applying classical and non-classical computer vision methods to the results of high-precision video records of bubble flows obtained during the experiment in the bioreactor vessel, we obtained a number of results presented in the paper. Characteristics of the bioreactor's bubble flow were estimated first by classical computer vision (CCV) methods including an elliptic regression approach for single bubble boundaries selection and clustering, image transformation through a set of filters and developing an algorithm for separation of the overlapping bubbles. The application of the developed method for the entire video filming makes it possible to obtain parameter distributions and set dropout thresholds in order to obtain better estimates due to averaging. The developed CCV methodology was also tested and verified on a collected and labeled manual dataset. An onwards deep neural network (NN) approach was also applied, for instance the segmentation task, and has demonstrated certain advantages in terms of high segmentation resolution, while the classical one tends to be more speedy. Thus, in the current manuscript both advantages and disadvantages of the classical computer vision method (CCV) and neural network approach (NN) are discussed based on evaluation of bubbles' number and their area defined. Northern Europe and Northeast Asia, which are climatologically mild and temperate in early summer, both witnessed record-breaking heat extremes in June 2023. With a focus on the subseasonal time scale, this study highlights a teleconnected relationship in historical early-summer heat extremes between Northern Europe and Northeast Asia. By diagnosing the thermal budget and wave activity flux, we show that over one third of historical Northeast Asian heat extremes are initialized by Eurasian mid-latitude Rossby wave packets. The wave packets manifest as strong anticyclonic anomalies over subpolar North Atlantic, cyclonic anomalies over Ural region and anticyclonic anomalies over Northeast Asia, which directly cause coexisting heat extremes in Northern Europe and Northeast Asia. Such wave packets are strongly modulated by the Eurasian jet stream. By carrying out numerical experiments, we further explain why the wave packet is significant in early summer. We find that the quasi-stationary response of the Eurasian midlatitude Rossby wave packets to a specified heating in subpolar North Atlantic is dependent on the background jet structure. In early summer, the double-jet state over Eurasia favors Rossby wave propagation. This is of great practical importance for accurate prediction of Northeast Asian heat extreme amplitude and location.

A computer vision algorithm to determine the parameters of a two-phase turbulent jet of a water-gas mixture traveling at a velocity in the range of 5–10 m/s was developed in order to evaluate the hydrodynamic efficiency of mass exchange apparatuses in real time, as well as to predict the gas exchange rate. The algorithm is based on threshold segmentation, the active contours method, the regression of principal components method, and the comparison of feature overlays, which allows the stable determination of jet boundaries and is a more efficient method when working with low-quality data than traditional implementations of the Canny method. Based on high-speed video recordings of jets, the proposed algorithm allows the calculation of key characteristics of jets: the velocity, angle of incidence, structural density, etc. Both the algorithm’s description and a test application based on video recordings of a real jet created on an experimental prototype of a jet bioreactor are discussed. The results are compared with computational fluid dynamics modeling and theoretical predictions, and good agreement is demonstrated. The presented algorithm itself represents the basis for a real-time control system for aerator operation in jet bioreactors, as well as being used in laboratory jet stream installations for the accumulation of big data on the structure and dynamic properties of jets.

Given its high population density and degree of urbanization, the eastern United States (US) is a region vulnerable to the impacts from hailstorms. Small changes in hail activity may indicate large impacts on the potential hail risks faced by the region. While contrasting hailstorm-favorable environmental changes between the northeastern and southeastern US have been documented, the meridional shift of hail activity in the eastern US has not been directly revealed based on observed hailstorm records. In this letter, using the official hailstorm database, we find a significant northward migration of hail activity (+0.33° N decade ^−1 ) in the eastern US since 2000, which is mainly contributed by the increasing proportion of large hailstorm events (hail size 0.75–2.0 inch) hitting the northeast in July and August (+0.93° N decade ^−1 ). The spatially inhomogeneous climatic mean state changes over the past two decades contribute a leading role: the intensified Bermuda High and the eastward shift of upper-level jet stream over the central US tended to moisten (dry) the atmosphere over the northeastern (southeastern) US by enhancing the low-level poleward moisture transport. This not only provides more moisture for hailstorm formation in the northeast but also destabilizes (stabilizes) the atmosphere in the northeast (southeast) under an overall increase in dry instability over the eastern US. These factors together lead to a northward shift of large hailstorms toward the northeastern US, where hailstorms were relatively seldom reported. Incorporating this shift in knowledge may improve contingency and risk management strategies of both the public and private sectors in the future.

Spatial and temporal distributions of Clear‐Air Turbulence (CAT) in the Northern Hemisphere were investigated using 41 years (1979–2019) of the European Centre for Medium‐range Weather Forecast Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5) data. We used two groups of CAT diagnostics to determine occurrence frequencies: (a) commonly used empirical turbulence indices (TI1, TI2, and TI3) and their components [vertical wind shear (VWS), deformation, ‐divergence, and divergence tendency], and (b) theoretical instability indicators [Richardson number (Ri), potential vorticity (PV), and Brunt‐Vӓisӓlӓ frequency]. The empirical indices showed high frequencies of moderate‐or‐greater (MOG)‐level CAT potential over the East Asian, Eastern Pacific, and Northwestern Atlantic regions in winter. Over East Asia, the entrance region of strong upper‐level jets showed the highest frequencies in TI1, TI2, and TI3 due mainly to strong VWS. The Eastern Pacific and Northwestern Atlantic areas near the exit region of jets had relatively high frequencies of these indices and also Ri. PV frequency was high on the southern side of jet primarily due to negative relative vorticity. Long‐term increasing trends of MOG‐level CAT potential also appeared in those three regions mainly due to warming in lower latitudes. The most significant increasing trend was found over East Asia, due to the strengthening of the East Asian jet and increased VWS due to the strong meridional temperature gradients in the mid‐troposphere induced by warming in the tropics and cooling in eastern Eurasia. These trends over East Asia, if continued, are expected to be of importance to efficient aviation operations across the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Plain Language Summary: Strong bumpiness of cruising aircraft can lead to physical injuries for crews and passengers, which is mostly occurred due to atmospheric turbulence by enhanced wind shear near upper‐level jet stream. Spatial characteristics of turbulence and their long‐term trends at cruising altitude in Northern Hemisphere were examined using the up‐to‐date global reanalysis data. The result showed that East Asia, Eastern Pacific, and Northwestern Atlantic regions have a higher frequency of turbulence than other areas. In particular, East Asia was found to be the highest frequency and the largest increasing trend of strong turbulence, which is collocated with a heavy air‐traffic region between East Asia and North America across the North Pacific Ocean. This implies that the potential of encountering turbulence over East Asia could be increased further, if the jet stream will be strengthened continually due to climate change in this region. Understanding the natural and forced variability of the general circulation of the atmosphere and its drivers is one of the grand challenges in climate science. In particular, it is of paramount importance to understand to what extent the systematic error of global climate models affects the processes driving such variability. This is done by performing a set of simulations (ROCK experiments) with an intermediate complexity atmospheric model (SPEEDY), in which the Rocky Mountains orography is modified (increased or decreased) to influence the structure of the North Pacific jet stream. For each of these modified-orography experiments, the climatic response to idealized sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of varying intensity in the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) region is studied. ROCK experiments are characterized by variations in the Pacific jet stream intensity whose extension encompasses the spread of the systematic error found in state-of-the-art climate models. When forced with ENSO-like idealised anomalies, they exhibit a non-negligible sensitivity in the response pattern over the Pacific North American region, indicating that a change/bias in the model mean state can affect the model response to ENSO. It is found that the classical Rossby wave train response generated by ENSO is more meridionally oriented when the Pacific jet stream is weaker, while it exhibits a more zonal structure when the jet is stronger. Rossby wave linear theory, used here to interpret the results, suggests that a stronger jet implies a stronger waveguide, which traps Rossby waves at a lower latitude, favouring a more zonally oriented propagation of the tropically induced Rossby waves. The shape of the dynamical response to ENSO, determined by changes in the intensity of the Pacific Jet, affects in turn the ENSO impacts on surface temperature and precipitation over Central and North America. Furthermore, a comparison of the SPEEDY results with CMIP6 models behaviour suggests a wider applicability of the results to more resources-demanding, complete climate GCMs, opening up to future works focusing on the relationship between Pacific jet misrepresentation and response to external forcing in fully-fledged GCMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unprecedented heat waves have been demonstrated sweeping across much of the Northern Hemisphere in recent summers. However, this study reveals that for northern Eurasia (30°–70°N, 10°–130°E), significant increases in summer extreme high temperature days (EHTDs) have already commenced since the mid-1990s, with the peaks centered on the surrounding areas of the Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal. Results indicate that compared with the period of 1960–1994 (P1), during 1995–2018 (P2) high-pressure and anticyclonic anomalies occupy the areas around the Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal, thus suppressing local cloud cover and precipitation, enhancing the solar radiation and high-temperature anomalies. The anticyclonic anomaly over Lake Baikal shows a close relationship with the increasing trend of global temperature, and the anomalous anticyclone over the Caspian Sea is under the influence of the warm North Atlantic and anomalous upper-troposphere jet stream during P2. The warmer than normal North Atlantic leads to the high-pressure anomaly over the Caspian Sea by modulating the Rossby wave activity. In addition, during P2, the temperatures in the middle North Atlantic and Western Europe show greater increments than those over higher latitudes, and thus the temperature gradient enhances the westerly thermal wind, which therefore leads to an anomalous upper-level jet stream to the North of the Caspian Sea. Under this circumstance, the Caspian Sea is located to the right side of the anomalous jet exit, inducing the suppressed upward motion over there and favoring the occurrence of more EHTDs after the mid-1990s.

In this research, the frequency of the jet streams during extreme and pervasive precipitation have been analyzed using environmental to circulation approach. Therefore daily precipitation data of 11 synoptic stations have been extracted from January, 1st, 1951 to March, 20th,2013 (22725 days) from Iran meteorological organization. Then, by using two thresholds of extensiveness and intensity of precipitation occurrence( at least, half of the stations receive the precipitation and the average precipitation of stations will be more than 99th percentile average), 97 days had been recognized. Then, jet streams frequency and their locations and speed have been calculated on the frame of 0° to 120° E and 0° to 80° N for each pixel(1617) in levels 250, 300, 400 and 500 hPa ) at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC. The results indicate that jet streams over 300, 400 and 500 hPa levels and at 18:00 UTC observe over the study area. The highest frequency of jet streams is located in the north of Saudi Arabia. At the same time, the average speed maps of jet stream in conforming with the maximum frequency of jet stream on one hand and on the other hand is simultaneous with occurring the maximum speed of jet stream over study area that indicates the output axis of jet stream is toward the semi-western parts of Iran and east Azarbaijan is located on the left output part of jet streams where atmospheric divergence and instability occurred in all the observations. This can result in an expansion of air mass at the upper level or ascending vertical motion. Generally, the elongation of jet streams mostly until 500 hPa level at 18:00 indicates the thickness of the instability layer that can create the extreme and pervasiveprecipitation on east Azarbaijan.

Atmospheric westerly jet streams are driven by temperature differences between low and high latitudes and the rotation of the Earth. Meandering jet streams and propagating Rossby waves are responsible for the variable weather in the mid-latitudes. Moreover, extreme weather events such as heat waves and cold spells are part of the jet stream dynamics. For many years, a simple analog in the form of a simplified laboratory experiment, the differentially heated rotating annulus, has provided insight into the dynamics of the meandering jet stream. In the present study, probability density distributions of extreme events from a long-term laboratory experiment are studied and compared to the atmospheric probability density distributions. Empirical distributions of extreme value monthly block data are derived for the experimental and atmospheric cases. Generalized extreme value distributions are adjusted to the empirical distributions, and the distribution parameters are compared. Good agreement was found, but the distributions of the experimental data showed a shift toward larger extreme values, and some explanations for this shift are suggested. The results indicate that the laboratory model might be a useful tool for investigating changes in extreme event distributions due to climate change. In the laboratory context, the change can be modeled by an increase in total temperature accompanied by a reduction in the radial heat contrast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interdecadal change of the summer (July–August) rainfall over North China (SRNC) is of great concern to the climate research community. Based on the sliding correlation and interdecadal difference analysis, the interdecadal change of SRNC was studied. Results show a significantly wetter period of SRNC since the mid-2000s, which was associated with strengthening negative relationship between SRNC and PDO. PDO affected the SRNC through the jet stream in the upper-level and the East Asia–Pacific (EAP) teleconnection pattern. In the negative phase of the PDO since the mid-2000s, the contractive upper-level jet stream in the west of North China resulted in the abnormal updraft over the southern region of North China. Meanwhile, the positive phase of the EAP teleconnection pattern brought warm and wet southeast flow entering North China from its eastern boundary, both bringing more rainfall in North China. The abnormal water vapor transport from the western Pacific was very different from that accompanying the East Asian summer monsoon.

Multiple studies have considered whether increased anthropogenic CO2 will affect the wind speeds and turbulence associated with the winter North Atlantic polar‐front jet stream in the upper atmosphere. Key questions are whether any effects can already be seen and, if so, can they be seen independent of computer models of the atmosphere. In this study we use two reanalyses, NCEP/NCAR and the ECMWF ERA5, and two large observational archives, AMDAR/ACARS and the Global Aircraft Data Set (GADS), to try to answer these questions for the period 2002–2020 when automated aircraft observations were plentiful over the North Atlantic. We focus on eastbound, New York to London, flights. No significant increase appears in reanalyses during the last roughly 40 years (1979–2020) which is our best estimate for the modern satellite era. In contrast, for the last roughly 20 years (2002–2020) both the ERA5 reanalysis (2.5% per year) and the GADS archive (1.2% to 1.4% per year) show a statistically significant rise in the wind speed in the North Atlantic jet streak exit region. These results must be considered in the context of atmospheric oscillations, changes to the North Atlantic Track System (NATS), and the effects of aircraft step climbs. We estimate that up to 0.5% of the rise may be due to improvements in the NATS operations and an unknown additional amount may be due to the substantial increase in automated aircraft observations starting in 1997. We also examine the impact of aircraft observations on one's confidence in drawing conclusions from secular changes in the reanalyses. For turbulence, the Light turbulence trends are not statistically significant. Our confidence in the turbulence results is more limited since these observations reflect medium‐term changes in tactical and strategic aircraft operational procedures as well as the underlying prevalence of turbulence. The meandering jet streams of the Northern Hemisphere influence the weather for more than half of Earth's population, so it is imperative that we improve our understanding of their behavior and how they respond to climate change. Here, we describe a novel laboratory model for a meandering zonal jet. This model comprises a large rotating annulus with a series of topographic ridges, and an imposed radial vorticity flux. Flow interactions with the topographic ridges operate to concentrate the zonal transport into a narrow jet, which supports the development and propagation of Rossby waves. We investigate the dynamics of the jet for a range of rotation rates, imposed radial vorticity fluxes, and topographic ridge configurations. The circulations are classified into two distinct regimes: predominantly zonal or predominantly meandering. The flow regime can be quantified by the ratio of the Ekman dissipation and jet advection timescales, which gives an indication of whether disturbances arising from the flow‐topography interaction are dissipated faster than the time taken to circuit the annulus; if not, these disturbances will reencounter the topography, and thus be reinforced and amplified. For predominantly zonal flows, the radial vorticity flux is split equally between the standing meanders and transient eddies. For predominantly meandering flows, standing meanders perform 79% of the radial vorticity flux, with 18% accommodated by the transient eddies. Our experiments indicate that the Arctic amplification associated with climate change will tend to favor predominantly zonal flow conditions, suggesting a reduced occurrence of atmospheric blocking events caused by the jet streams. The Northwest (NW) Atlantic has experienced extreme ecological impacts from Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) within the past decade. This paper focuses on four MHW active years (2012, 2016, 2017, and 2020) and the relationship between Sea Surface Temperature anomalies (SSTA), Sea Surface Salinity anomalies (SSSA), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Geopotential Height anomalies (ZA), and anomalous Jet Stream positions (JSPA). Multichannel singular spectrum analysis (MSSA) reveals the strongest temporal covariances between SSSA and SSTA, and JSPA and SSTA for all years, particularly for 2020 (SSSA–SSTA: 50%, JSPA–SSTA: 51%) indicating that this active MHW year was more atmospherically driven, followed by 2012, which had the second highest temporal covariances (SSSA–SSTA: 47%, JSPA–SSTA: 50%) between these parameters. Spatial correlations for SSSA and SSTA between NAO during MHW active years disrupt the long–term (2010–2020) positive relationship in the NW Atlantic. SSSA and JSPA, and SSSA and SSTA were strongly correlated across the NW Atlantic; 2012 SSSA–JSPA correlations were strong and positive between 56–62°W, and 2016, 2017, and 2020 SSSA–JSPA correlations were mostly strong and negative, with strong positive correlations present near the coastline (70–66°W) or off the NW Atlantic shelf (52–48°W). SSSA–SSTA showed the opposite correlations of similar spatial distributions of SSSA–JSPA for all MHW active years. This indicates strong relationships between JSPA, SSSA, and SSTA during MHWs. We analyzed the characteristics of small-scale wave disturbances emerging during the evolution and transformation of the jet stream (JS) in the winter stratosphere and the lower mesosphere of the northern hemisphere, including the periods of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events. Continuous generation of small-scale wave disturbances is shown to occur over quiet geomagnetic winter periods in the region of a steady jet stream in the strato–mesosphere. We studied spatial spectra for the vertical velocity variations, determined by the parameters of emerging wave disturbances. The greatest intensities of disturbances are recorded in the regions corresponding to the high velocities of the JS (from 100 m/s and higher). In the northern hemisphere, those latitudes encompass ~40–60° N. When a steady jet stream forms, the horizontal length and periods of the most intensive wavelike disturbances are shown to vary within 300–1000 km and 50–150 min correspondingly (which match the characteristic scales of internal gravity waves, or IGWs). During the SSW prewarming stage, the JS transforms substantially. Over the same periods, a disturbance intensification is recorded, as well as the emergence of larger-scale disturbances with 3000–5000-km horizontal wavelengths, and even higher. After the SSW peak and during the stratosphere circulation recovery, the velocity in the JS substantially decreases and an essential reduction in wave-disturbance generation occurs. There are decreases in the average amplitude values (by factors of 1.8–6.7). The strongest amplitude drop was observed for short waves (zonal wavelength λU = 300 km). The maximum attenuation for all wavelengths was observed for the strongest 2008/2009 winter SSW. For the analyzed events, such attenuation was observed for up to about a month after the SSW peak. Thus, JS disruption during major SSWs leads to deactivating the source for generating small-scale wave disturbances in the stratosphere. This may affect disturbances in higher atmospheric layers. In this study, the frequency of effective jet streams was analyzed in extreme and widespread precipitations in the west of Iran. For this purpose, the daily precipitation of 69 synoptic and climatic stations over 18,624 days (1961–2010) were selected. Then, 119 days of extreme and widespread precipitation in the study area were chosen based on generalized distribution for conducting related reviews and analyses. The frequency of jet streams in the geographical location from 0° to 120°E and −10° to 80°N were reviewed at four levels (250, 300, 400 and 500 hPa). Due to the large volume of information, only the highest and lowest levels (250 and 500 hPa) in relation to the surface were considered. According to the results, the highest frequency of jet stream was observed at 250 hPa. The second quarter of the jet stream core lay over the west of Iran (which is associated with increasing positive vorticity as well as upper-level divergence and lower-level convergence of the atmosphere). In general, the extension of jet stream up to 500 hPa indicated an unstable layer thickness, which can cause extreme and widespread precipitation in the west of Iran. The results of selected days based on cluster analysis and Lund correlation revealed that in rainy days, the wind speed was more than 50 m/s and the subtropical jet stream speed was over 40 m/s, leading to extreme precipitation in the west of Iran. Abstract The meandering jet streams of the Northern Hemisphere influence the weather for more than half of Earth's population, so it is imperative that we improve our understanding of their behavior and how they respond to climate change. Here, we describe a novel laboratory model for a meandering zonal jet. This model comprises a large rotating annulus with a series of topographic ridges, and an imposed radial vorticity flux. Flow interactions with the topographic ridges operate to concentrate the zonal transport into a narrow jet, which supports the development and propagation of Rossby waves. We investigate the dynamics of the jet for a range of rotation rates, imposed radial vorticity fluxes, and topographic ridge configurations. The circulations are classified into two distinct regimes: predominantly zonal or predominantly meandering. The flow regime can be quantified by the ratio of the Ekman dissipation and jet advection timescales, which gives an indication of whether disturbances arising from the flow‐topography interaction are dissipated faster than the time taken to circuit the annulus; if not, these disturbances will reencounter the topography, and thus be reinforced and amplified. For predominantly zonal flows, the radial vorticity flux is split equally between the standing meanders and transient eddies. For predominantly meandering flows, standing meanders perform 79% of the radial vorticity flux, with 18% accommodated by the transient eddies. Our experiments indicate that the Arctic amplification associated with climate change will tend to favor predominantly zonal flow conditions, suggesting a reduced occurrence of atmospheric blocking events caused by the jet streams.

Hydrofoil is an important component and exerts a significant impact on the performance of hydraulic machinery. Passive flow control can optimize dynamic characteristics and alter turbulent structure around hydrofoil. Slot holds a prominent position due to its efficacy and cost advantage in terms of production and installation. The present study proposes a novel configuration that can enhance the hydrodynamic behavior of hydrofoil. An advanced high-fidelity spectral element method is employed to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of proposed configurations and large-eddy simulation is implemented to model turbulence. The effects of varying slot width, as well as inlet and outlet positions, are systematically examined to explore the flow-field alteration by comparing these configurations to the baseline. The crucial parameters including drag, lift, and pressure coefficients for the slotted configurations are numerically computed, revealing enhancements in the hydrodynamic performance. The optimal slot establishes a connection between the pressure and suction sides, leading to pressure reduction on the suction side and mitigating the risk of cavitation. The upward-directed slot with the outlet positioned away from the tailing and leading-edge vortices outperforms the other configurations. The jet stream of the slot driven by dynamic pressure is vigorous and unstable without one dominant frequency. Furthermore, the slot effectively alters the frequency of fluid-induced forces. Development of energy-efficient and high-performance bioreactors requires progress in methods for assessing the key parameters of the biosynthesis process. With a wide variety of approaches and methods for determining the phase contact area in gas–liquid flows, the question of obtaining its accurate quantitative estimation remains open. Particularly challenging are the issues of getting information about the mass transfer coefficients instantly, as well as the development of predictive capabilities for the implementation of effective flow control in continuous fermentation both on the laboratory and industrial scales. Motivated by the opportunity to explore the possibility of applying classical and non-classical computer vision methods to the results of high-precision video records of bubble flows obtained during the experiment in the bioreactor vessel, we obtained a number of results presented in the paper. Characteristics of the bioreactor’s bubble flow were estimated first by classical computer vision (CCV) methods including an elliptic regression approach for single bubble boundaries selection and clustering, image transformation through a set of filters and developing an algorithm for separation of the overlapping bubbles. The application of the developed method for the entire video filming makes it possible to obtain parameter distributions and set dropout thresholds in order to obtain better estimates due to averaging. The developed CCV methodology was also tested and verified on a collected and labeled manual dataset. An onwards deep neural network (NN) approach was also applied, for instance the segmentation task, and has demonstrated certain advantages in terms of high segmentation resolution, while the classical one tends to be more speedy. Thus, in the current manuscript both advantages and disadvantages of the classical computer vision method (CCV) and neural network approach (NN) are discussed based on evaluation of bubbles’ number and their area defined. An approach to mass transfer coefficient estimation methodology in virtue of obtained results is also represented.
