This essay focuses on the different editions of one of the first educational Siddurim (prayerbooks) published in Eretz Israel during the British Mandate period. The Siddur was created and edited by Annie Landau (1873-1945), longtime headmistress of the Evelina de Rothschild School for Girls, and a close study of these early editions reveals that, in editing them, Landau made meaningful decisions regarding content, language, pedagogy and of course gender: Which parts of the daily prayers would be recited at school, and which would be left out? How should the Siddur reflect the feminine identity of its users? And to what extent should it reflect her own religious values? Examining the slight yet meaningful differences between the school's first three Siddurim (as well as a fourth one, published after Landau's death) sheds light on Landau's character as a headmistress and editor, but also on the unique nature of the school she led and the challenges of creating regular prayers for Jewish girls in Mandatory Jerusalem. Entre les annees 1880 et 1930, une importante vague migratoire juive, originaire d'Europe de l'Est, transforme le tissu social de la metropole quebecoise. Ces immigrants, qui ont une forte appartenance identitaire, ne tardent pas a mettre sur pied des etablissements scolaires prives, porteurs de projets educatifs qui refletent les divers horizons culturels, religieux, sociaux et ideologiques auxquels ils appartiennent. Cet article vise a presenter le processus de formation du milieu scolaire juif a Montreal, entre 1874 et 1939, examine a la fois sous 1' angle de la volonte politique des dirigeants communautaires et des aspirations sociales de la population juive. Between 1880 and 1930, a major wave of Jewish immigration, from Eastern Europe, transforms the social fabric of Quebec's largest city. These immigrants have a strong sense of identity, and are quick to set up private schools, with educational projects that reflect their cultural, religious, social and ideological backgrounds. This article aims to present the process of forming the Jewish school system in Montreal, between 1874 and 1939, examined both in terms of the political will of the community leaders and the social aspirations of the Jewish population. The motivating question is whether investments in education provide sufficient resources to escape the risk of poverty in the low-income sector or if changes in household characteristics are more important determinants of one's living standard. Changes in household characteristics are defined in terms of partners' entry into and exit from households and partners' different labour market profiles. The analysis focuses on households in the low-income sector in Germany, a population that is at high risk of poverty in a social welfare state that is expected to mitigate the effects of changes in family formation independent of gender. Findings from panel regression analysis demonstrate that women, in contrast to men, benefit economically as much as or more from investing in traditional family formations than in their own labour market position. This is especially the case for women with lower levels of education. University of Judaism has received a $22-mil gift to open a new rabbinical school which will be the first in Western United States. This indicates the increasing Jewish community in Los Angeles has established power, independence and its own say. Critics on the East coast feel that this would regionalize rabbinical training and possibly split the Conservative Jewish movement. The Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary was shocked and felt that there is a possibility of deterioration of the relationship between his seminary and the University of Judaism.
