To examine the association of the working stress with posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD), and burnout as the mediator for this association among emergency nurses during COVID-19 pandemic.Longitudinal survey study.Online survey was used to collect data during the period from August to November 2020 with a sample of 169 emergency nurses. They were invited to complete the following questionnaires at the 6th and 9th months after COVID-19 outbreak: Posttraumatic Symptom Scale (PTSS-10), the emergency nurses' COVID-19 stress questionnaire and Chinese version of 21-item Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI).During the 3-month follow-up, there were no changes in the number of suspected PTSD cases (6 and above symptoms): 41% at the 6th month and 33.3% at the 9th month. The increases of the personal burnout levels and living apart from families were the main factors associated with the PTSD symptoms. The risk for emergency nurses suffering from PTSD is through stress levels increasing their burnout levels.Over 30 percent of emergency nurses remained at high risk for suspected PTSD. The burnout levels mediated the relationship between the stress levels and the risks of PTSD.Little as know about the impact of COVID-19 on emergency nurses' stress. This study found emergency nurses remained to be the high risk for the suspected PTSD cases. It is urged to develop a stress-reduction program targeting at causes of stress and improving burnout for emergency nurses during COVID-19 pandemic.

Background The COVID-19 frontline nurses' stress-reduction program by the cooperation of manager with the nurses is not-well developed. Aim This study aimed to examine the effect of an emergency nurse-led stress reduction project on reducing stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods The action research was conducted using online and person-to-person group brainstorming strategies. The online survey was used to evaluate emergency nurses' stress levels, causes of stress, and needs at the 50th, 80th, and 110th days of the pandemic from March to May 2020. Results The numbers of nurses participating in three-time survey were 160, 166, and 160, respectively. There was a decrease in the nurses' work-related stress after implementing the improvement strategies. Stress from PPE, information about infection control, family's worry about being infected reduced across 2 months. Needs regarding PPE, COVID-19 information, and a forum for sharing experiences of COVID-19 care decreased while needs of allowing more days off increased. Conclusions The stress-reduction project targeting at nurses' views of their needs can reduce their' stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Implication for nursing management The online and person-to-person group brainstorming building a good partnership between nurses and managers can be an effective nursing management.

This is the first study integrate the flameless oxidation (FO) and in-chamber melting (ICM) processes in a primary chamber of a laboratory waste incinerator to improve energy and emission performances. Two liquid burners created a twin-cyclonic fluid field that achieved the FO and ICM in the same chamber. The first cyclone provided a well-mixed and lower temperature FO to reduce auxiliary diesel consumption, NOx and PM emissions by 25.8%, 30.9%, and 79.2%, respectively, from the original system. The hot gases produced by FO enhance the ICM process and transformed the bottom ashes to stabler slags, in turn meeting the regulations for nonhazardous wastes. The other cyclone enhanced the drying and water–gas shift reaction in the drying zone by recirculating the CO and enthalpy from FO and ICM. Eventually, the residual CO, hydrocarbons, and H2 were sent to the secondary chamber for further oxidation. A computational fluid dynamic simulation supported the fluid field assumption posed in this study. Moreover, advanced scrubbers were employed after thermal treatments to reduce HCl and SO2 by 81.8% and 38.8% and further retarded the corrosion rate in the baghouse supporting cage by 87.7%. The precursors of condensable particulate matter were reduced by condensation and finally removed in the baghouse. Nevertheless, the emissions of the high- and mid-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were greatly reduced by 60.8–93.1% and 80.2–99.9%, respectively. Consequently, the new system reduced annual emissions by 40.7–87.6% and operating costs by 41.5%, allowing recovery of the remodification investment in 20.5 months.

In this study, the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) induced by nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology was used for isopropanol (IPA) degradation. IPA, intermediate, final product, and ozone concentrations were analyzed using GC-MS, carbon dioxide detector, and ozone detector. The experimental flow rate and concentration were fixed to 1 L/min and 1200 ppm ± 10%, respectively. Different reaction procedures were proposed for self-made metal catalyst combined with a plasma system (plasma alone and γ-Al2O3 combined with plasma, Cu (5 wt%)/γ-Al2O3 combined with plasma, Mn (3 wt%)-Cu (5 wt%)/γ-Al2O3 combined with plasma). In addition, the effect of the carrier gas oxygen content (0%, 20%, and 100%) on IPA conversion and intermediate and carbon dioxide selectivity was also investigated. The results revealed that the Mn (F)-Cu/γ-Al2O3 combined with plasma exhibited more efficient IPA conversion. In the 100% oxygen environment, the IPA conversion rate increased from 79.32 to 99.99%, and carbon dioxide selectivity increased from 3.82 to 50.23%. IPA was completely converted after 60 min of plasma treatment with the acetone selectivity, carbon dioxide selectivity, and tail ozone concentration of 26.71% ± 1.27%, 50.23% ± 0.56%, and 1761 ± 11 ppm, respectively. This study proved that the current single planar DBD configuration is an effective advanced treatment technology for the decomposition of VOCs.

Highlights • Performance of serological tests detecting SARS-CoV-2 antibodies is disease course dependent. • Detection sensitivity of rapid antibody tests with lateral flow immunoassay for COVID-19 reached 100% after 3 weeks of symptom onset. • COVID-19 patients with pneumonia exhibited earlier seroconversion than those without pneumonia. • Prolonged viral shedding after seroconversion with a median duration of 14 days was observed. • Serological testing may be a useful tool in addition to rRT-PCR for the diagnosis of COVID-19., SUMMARY Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the role of rapid serological tests in the management of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 16 real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction-confirmed symptomatic patients with COVID-19 and 58 COVID-19 negative patients at a medical center in Taiwan over a 3-month period. Serial serum samples were collected and tested for antibody response using four point-of-care (POC) lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA) (ALLTEST 2019-nCoV IgG/IgM Rapid Test, Dynamiker 2019-nCoV IgG/IgM Rapid Test, ASK COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Test, and Wondfo SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test). Time-dependent detection sensitivity and timeliness of seroconversion were determined and compared between the four POC rapid tests. Results: The overall sensitivity and specificity of the four tests for detecting anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after 3 weeks of symptom onset were 100% and 100%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the rapid tests used for detection of IgM and IgG separately and those used for detection of combined total antibody (mainly IgM/IgG). There was no significant difference between the four POC rapid tests in terms of time required for determining seroconversion of COVID-19. Patients with COVID-19 with pneumonia demonstrated shorter seroconversion time than those without pneumonia. Conclusion: Though the POC antibody rapid tests based on LFIA showed reliable performance in the detection of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies, the results of these tests should be interpreted and applied appropriately in the context of antibody dynamic of COVID-19 infection. COVID-19 patients complicated with pneumonia exhibited earlier anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody response than COVID-19 patients without pneumonia.

An innovative method for utilizing synthetic calcium fluoride (CaF2), recovered from fluoride-containing semiconductor wastewater, and waste sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF) was investigated. The research was set to study the low-temperature production of HF via reaction of synthetic CaF2 and waste H2SO4. The impact of four factors, including H2SO4 concentration, total volume (H2SO4 + H2O)/CaF2 ratio, drying temperature of synthetic CaF2, and reaction carried out under different temperature, on HF productivity was investigated in this study. Background/Purpose Current studies on pediatric coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are rare. The clinical characteristics and spectrum are still unknown. Facing this unknown and emerging pathogen, we aimed to collect current evidence about COVID-19 in children. Methods We performed a systematic review in PubMed and Embase to find relevant case series. Because some reports were published in Chinese journals, the journals and publications of the Chinese Medical Association related to COVID-19 were completely reviewed. A random effects model was used to pool clinical data in the meta-analysis. Results Nine case series were included. In the pooled data, most of patients (75%) had a household contact history. The disease severity was mainly mild to moderate (98%). Only 2 children (2%) received intensive care. Fever occurred in 59% of the patients, while cough in 46%. Gastrointestinal symptoms (12%) were uncommon. There are 26% children are asymptomatic. The most common radiographic finding was ground glass opacities (48%). Currently, there is no evidence of vertical transmission to neonates born to mothers with COVID-19. Compared with the most relevant virus, SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 causes less severe disease. Conclusion COVID-19 has distinct features in children. The disease severity is mild. Current diagnosis is based mainly on typical ground glass opacities on chest CT, epidemiological suspicion and contact tracing.

In Taiwan, the vaccination program started in March 2021, with ChAdOx1-S being the first available WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccine, followed by Moderna vaccine. This study aimed to investigate the immunogenicity and safety of homologous and heterologous prime-boost regimens with ChAdOx1-S and mRNA-1273.From March to November 2021, homologous or heterologous regimens with ChAdOx1-S and mRNA-1273 vaccination (ChAdOx1-S/ChAdOx1-S, mRNA-1273/mRNA-1273, ChAdOx1-S/mRNA-1273) were given to 945 healthy participants. Serum samples were collected at designated time points. The anti-RBD/S1 antibody titers and neutralizing ability were measured by three different immunoassays: Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany), AdviseDx SARS-CoV-2 IgG II (Abbott Diagnostics Division, Sligo, Ireland), and cPass™ SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Antibody Detection Kit (GenScript, New Jersey, USA).We found that heterologous vaccination with ChAdOx1-S/mRNA-1273 had an acceptable safety profile and induced higher total anti-RBD/S1 antibody production (p 0.0001), yet lower anti-RBD/S1 IgG titer (p 0.0001) and neutralizing ability (p = 0.0101) than mRNA-1273/mRNA-1273 group. Both regimens showed higher antibody titers and superior neutralizing abilities than ChAdOx1-S/ChAdOx1-S. An age-dependent antibody response to ChAdOx1-S/mRNA-1273 was shown after both the priming and the booster doses. Younger age was associated with higher antibody production and neutralizing ability.Heterologous ChAdOx1-S/mRNA-1273 vaccination regimen is generally safe and induces a robust humoral immune response that is non-inferior to that of mRNA-1273/mRNA-1273.

This study investigated the AQI (air quality index) and atmospheric pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, NO2 and O3 in Chongqing, Luzhou and Chengdu from 2017 to 2019. In addition, the impacts of the COVID-19 event on the air quality in the three cities in 2020 were compared and discussed. For the combined AQIs for the three cities, in spring, the daily AQIs ranged between 25 and 182 and averaged 72.1. In summer, the daily AQIs ranged between 24 and 206 and averaged 77.5. In autumn, the daily AQIs ranged between 22 and 170 and averaged 61.1, and in winter, the daily AQIs ranged between 28 and 375 and averaged 99.6. The distributions of the six AQI classes in spring were 3%, 94%, 3%, 0%, 0%, and 0%; in summer, they were 11%, 74%, 15%, 0%, 0% and 0%; in autumn, they were 29%, 70%, 1%, 0%, 0%, and 0%, and in winter, they were 1%, 52%, 44%, 3%, 0%, and 0%, respectively. The average AQIs, in order, were Chengdu (85.4) > Chongqing (73.8) > Luzhou (73.2). Both the highest AQIs and PM2.5 (as the major indicatory air pollutant) occurred mainly in the low temperature season (January, December, and February), while O3 was the main air pollutant in June and August when the weather was hot. In February 2020, during the epidemic prevention and control actions taken in response to COVID-19 for the three cities, the combined AQIs for the top five days with the highest AQIs in February 2020 was 79.4, which was 23.6% lower than that from 2017–2019 (AQI = 100.7), and the average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, and NO2 were 89.4 µg m–3, 106 µg m–3, 2.31 ppb, 0.72 ppm, and 12.3 ppb, respectively, and were 17.9%, 30.8%, 83.8%, 19.8%, and 62.1%, lower than those in February 2017–2019. However, the average O3 concentration (31.8 ppb) in February 2020 rather than decreasing, increased by 6.2%. This is because a lower NO2 concentration hindered the NO + O3 reaction and led to increase O3 concentration in the ambient air.

This study focused on the pollutant characteristics of a renovated laboratory waste treatment plant that adopted a state-of-the-art design for its air pollution control system. The output materials, including slag, primary quenching tower ash, scrubbing wastewater, sludge, fabric filter ash, and flue gas, were sampled and analyzed. Incorporating an organic liquid waste injector into the primary combustion chamber enabled the local temperature to be increased to approximately 1300–1400°C, thereby reducing the PCDD/F concentration in the slag to 0.019 ng I-TEQ g–1 and the PCDD/F emission factor to 699 µg I-TEQ ton-waste–1. In addition, the concentration of the flue gas was much lower than the regulated standard, and the low level of emissions contributed to the performance of the air pollution control devices. The fly ash contained crystalline-phase NaCl or other sodium salts that resulted from the neutralization of NaOH by acidic pollutants. However, high concentrations of Cl and PCDD/Fs were measured in the scrubbing wastewater and sludge, respectively. The scrubbing unit of the renovated air pollution control system was placed in front of the fabric filter to remove HCl, thus providing excellent protection for the filter.

The COVID-19 epidemic discovered and reported at the end of December 2019 and began spreading rapidly around the world. The impact of the COVID-19 event on the trip intensity, AQI (air quality index), and air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, and O3 in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Foshan (the so-called ‘three cities’) from January 12 to March 27, in 2019 and 2020, are compared and discussed. In 2020, the combined trip intensity in the three cities ranged between 0.73 and 5.54 and averaged 2.57, which was 28.4% lower than that in 2019. In terms of the combined AQIs for the three cities, from January 12 to March 26, 2020, the daily AQIs ranged between 21.0 and 121.3 and averaged 56.4, which was 16.0% lower than that in 2019. The average AQIs in order were Guangzhou (57.5) > Foshan (54.1) > Shenzhen (44.1). In 2019, the distribution proportions of the six AQI classes were 45.2%, 50.4%, 4.40%, 0%, 0%, and 0%, respectively, while those in 2020 were 62.7%, 37.3%, 0%, 0%, 0% and 0%, respectively. For the combined data for the three cities, on the top five days with the highest AQIs during the epidemic period, the average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, and O3 were 76.4 μg m–3, 113.4 μg m–3, 5.14 ppb, 0.88 ppm, 36.5 ppb and 55.5 ppb, which were 55.2%, 49.4%, 55.1%, 30.0%, 45.1% and 15.5% lower than those during the non-epidemic period (from January 12 to March 27, 2017–2019). The above results revealed that the comprehensive strict epidemic prevention and control actions reduced trip intensity and improved the air quality significantly.

Bottom ash (BA) from incineration has been reused as a construction material for years. However, thermal treatments, which incur extra cost and higher energy demand, are essential to reduce/stabilize the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in BA, which can be released from BA during the next startup and cause peak emissions. In this study, the bottom ash from a laboratory waste incinerator (LWI) was collected and quenched at various temperatures during three shutdown operations to determine the results of the gradual cooling process. The PCDD/F content in the BA was quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The PCDD/Fs in BA was significantly lower (0.0239 ng WHO-TEQ g−1) after being quenched at >400 °C, which was only 1/300 of that in the sample gradually cooled to 0.97. In other words, careful operation of the cooling process is an important PCDD/F inhibition strategy and effectively reduces the subsequent startup emissions. Interestingly, the extremely low PCDD/F levels in the BA after quenching were found to further save the cost of thermal treatment, reduce electricity use by 500 MWh, and lower fuel consumption by 27 kL of diesel, as well as reducing annual CO2e emissions by 351 tons in an LWI. This finding could be further applied to simultaneously control PCDD/F emissions, save post-treatment costs, and reduce the secondary pollutants in other incinerators.

Background Frontline health care workers, including physicians, are at high risk of contracting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) owing to their exposure to patients suspected of having COVID-19. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits and feasibility of a double triage and telemedicine protocol in improving infection control in the emergency department (ED). Methods In this retrospective study, we recruited patients aged ≥20 years referred to the ED of the National Taiwan University Hospital between March 1 and April 30, 2020. A double triage and telemedicine protocol was developed to triage suggested COVID-19 cases and minimize health workers’ exposure to this disease. We categorized patients attending video interviews into a telemedicine group and patients experiencing face-to-face interviews into a conventional group. A questionnaire was used to assess how patients perceived the quality of the interviews and their communication with physicians as well as perceptions of stress, discrimination, and privacy. Each question was evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale. Physicians’ total exposure time and total evaluation time were treated as primary outcomes, and the mean scores of the questions were treated as secondary outcomes. Results The final sample included 198 patients, including 93 cases (47.0%) in the telemedicine group and 105 cases (53.0%) in the conventional group. The total exposure time in the telemedicine group was significantly shorter than that in the conventional group (4.7 minutes vs 8.9 minutes, P Conclusions The implementation of the double triage and telemedicine protocol in the ED during the COVID-19 pandemic has high potential to improve infection control.

An innovative method for utilizing synthetic calcium fluoride (CaF

An integrated gasification-flameless combustion-melting process was approached by a twin-cyclonic flow in a hazardous waste thermal treatment plant. A series of advanced scrubber, cyclonic demister, activated carbon adsorption, and baghouse processes were equipped for the end-of-pipe treatment. The untreated filterable particulate matter, CO, and NOx levels were only 283, 47.1, and 15.9 mg/Nm3, indicating the flameless combustion inhibited their formation by narrowing the post-combustion zone. The filterable particle mass-size distribution was equally contributed by nucleation, accumulation, and coarse formations, while their number concentration was predominated by nucleation (99.6%). That could enhance the adsorption of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) on ultrafine particles. Both total mass and toxic equivalent concentrations of PCDD/Fs were reduced 99.9% by the new air pollution control system when a slight reformation occurred during scrubbing. However, the escaped PCDD/Fs were mainly distributed on the ultrafine particles, which should be further inhibited by either increasing their sizes or equipping backup filtrations. Finally, the new process concentrates the PCDD/Fs into the scrubbing sludge, which could be recirculated back into the thermal process. This study not only reveals the emission risk of the ultrafine particle-bound PCDD/Fs, but also provides an effective process to remove them for industrial application.

This study investigated the pollution characteristics of a plasma melting system and compared its performance with that of the incineration system that was reported in Part 1 of this study. The heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in input and output materials during elutriation and plasma melting processes were analyzed. The elutriation process dissolved NaCl and caused an increase in the PCDD/Fs of raw mixed incinerator ashes. After being melted with waste silica gel, the PCDD/F level of elutriated ashes was greatly reduced, and the output mass/input mass ratio was only 0.000188, which was much lower than that of the co-incineration process (0.34). The powdery and porous structure of elutriated ashes was transformed into a glassy amorphous structure after the plasma melting process, and the slag was regarded as a non-hazardous product that can be recycled directly. The concentration of pollutants in the flue gas was much lower than the regulated standards. Although the operational cost of the plasma melting process is higher than that of the incineration process, the plasma melting process has a superior effect on the stabilization of elutriated ashes and is thus a preferable treatment method.

In this study, the atmospheric PM2.5, increases/decreases of the PM2.5, the PM2.5/PM10 ratio, total PCDD/Fs-TEQ concentrations, PM2.5-bound total PCDD/Fs-TEQ content, and PCDD/F gas-particle partition in Taiwan were investigated for the period 2013 to 2017. In Taiwan, the annual average PM2.5 concentrations were found to be 28.9, 24.1, 21.4, 20.2, and 19.9 µg m–3 in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively, which indicated that the annual variations in PM2.5 levels were decreasing during the study period. The average increases (+)/decreases (–) of PM2.5 concentrations were –16.7%, –11.1%, –5.75%, and –1.73% from 2013 to 2014, from 2014 to 2015, from 2015 to 2016, and from 2016 to 2017, respectively. Based to the relationship between PM10 values and total PCDD/F concentrations obtained from previous studies, we estimated that in 2017, the annual average total PCDD/Fs-TEQ concentrations ranged between 0.0148 (Lienchiang County) and 0.0573 pg WHO2005-TEQ m–3 (Keelung City), and averaged 0.0296 pg WHO2005-TEQ m–3, while the PM2.5-bound total PCDD/Fs-TEQ content ranged from 0.302 (Kaohsiung City) to 0.911 ng WHO2005-TEQ g–1 (Keelung City), at an average of 0.572 ng WHO2005-TEQ g–1. These values are suggested to be validated in the future study because the sources and formations of PM10 and PM2.5 in different areas were diverse, and may be not closely related to combustion sources. The seasonal variations in the gas fraction of total PCDD/Fs-WHO2005-TEQ concentrations were 68.6%, 86.6%, 82.3%, and 52.3% in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. Due to the fact that Taiwan is located mostly in the sub-tropical zone, which had annual average temperatures between 23.0 and 24.4°C, averaging 23.8°C during the study period, the majority of PCDD/Fs-TEQ were dominant in the gas phase.

Illegal harvesting and recycling of waste cooking oil, also referred to as “gutter oil” in many countries, poses a great food safety threat. Thus, in this study the feasibility of using waste cooking oil as an auxiliary fuel in the furnace of laboratory waste incinerator was evaluated in terms of toxic pollutant emissions. Two fuel blends (W20D80 and W40D60) were blended from varying proportions of diesel fuel (D100), and waste cooking oil (W100) and their physio-chemical characteristics were subsequently determined and compared. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) of D100, W100, W20D80 and W40D60 showed that diesel fuel consist of more volatile short aliphatic hydrocarbons, while the waste cooking oil and its blends had more thermal stable unsaturated long chain molecules. After the de novo synthesis window of 200–400°C, 40% of waste cooking oil and 60% of diesel (W40D60) was injected at around 500–700°C, and reduced the toxicity concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs by an average of 86% and 94%, respectively. This study demonstrated that, by using waste cooking oil as a fuel blend, not only can reduce the possibility of “gutter oil” being put in the food to damage the health of human beings, but also can be recycled as a kind of green fuel to reduce the emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

This study examined the effect of using waste cooking oil (WCO) as an alternative of diesel on PBDE emissions during the start-up of an industrial waste incinerator (IWI). The co-combustions were designed with 0, 40, and 60% WCO injection and become D100, W40D60, and W60D40 multi-fuel combustions. The flue gas was sampled during 4 temperature stages of the furnace: Stage A ( 850°C). The highest PBDE level was found in Stage A and sharply declined in Stage B by using diesel. The reduction of total PBDE was a competitive result between residue releasing and thermal decomposition in Stage B. The WCO were found to slightly increased the PBDE emissions during the Stage C and D, which provided the suitable temperature for PBDE formation (600–800°C). Therefore, the viscosity became an important control factor when the WCO were utilized as an alternative fuel in IWI operation. The accumulated PBDE emissions during the start-up procedure were 1,099, 1,253, and 1,207 µg by using D100, W40D60, and W60D40, respectively. Additionally, the annual PBDE emissions contributed by start-up procedures increased up to 4.60%, 5.47%, and 5.20% by three fuel combinations, respectively, if the IWI restarted once per month, and became a noticeable issue. Therefore, avoiding unnecessary start-ups was an essential criterion for IWI operation. The small increases (< 1%) of PBDE emissions by altering 40% and 60% diesel with WCO provided a useful information for WCO treatment. This new disposal for waste oil also created a good demonstration of Circular Economy. The overall life-cycle analysis was suggested to be investigated in the following research.

An innovative method for utilizing synthetic calcium fluoride (CaF2), recovered from fluoride-containing semiconductor wastewater, and waste sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF) was investigated. The research was set to study the low-temperature production of HF via the reaction of synthetic CaF2 and waste H2SO4. The impact of H2SO4 concentration and total volume (H2SO4 + H2O)/CaF2 ratio, drying temperature of synthetic CaF2 on HF productivity were investigated in this study. HF yield increased with increasing H2SO4 concentration and total volume/CaF2 ratio under room temperature. In addition, the HF produced in the reactions involving the 105 °C-dried synthetic CaF2 were higher than the 600 °C-dried synthetic CaF2 ones. The study will not only find uses for this semiconductor wastes but also provide a greener alternative to the current commercial production of HF.

This study describes polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) behavior during the co-incineration of elutriated mixed incinerator ashes with laboratory waste. The input and output materials during elutriation and incineration processes were sampled and analyzed using a high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry assay. The elutriation process mainly washed out soluble salts and thus resulted in an increase in the level of PCDD/F in the mixed incinerator ashes. After co-incineration with laboratory waste, the PCDD/F concentration of the flue gas met the regulated standard in Taiwan, and the PCDD/F mainly existed as a particulate phase. However, the PCDD/F levels in fly ashes that included elutriated ash in the incinerator were higher than those of fly ashes without it. The co-incineration output-mass/input-mass ratio of elutriated ash with laboratory waste was 0.34. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis results and scanning electron microscopy images, the main crystalline phase of the fly ashes was NaCl. The NaCl came from the reaction of HCl in the flue gas and the NaOH injected in the quenching tower after treatment in the co-incineration system.

Laboratory wastes are discharged from experimental, testing, or analysis processes, and contain various toxic chemical compounds with a high heating-value and a high chlorine content (＞ 9%). Elevated PCDD/F (polychlorinated dibenzo-pdioxin and furan) emissions during start-up stages are caused by combustion of waste with high chlorine contents, incomplete combustion, and so called ”memory effects”. Even though the duration of cold start-up is short compared with the hours of continuous steady operation in a waste incinerator, its negative effects with regard to PCDD/F emissions on both human health and the environment cannot be neglected. A full-scale laboratory-waste incinerator which is operated for 10 days in each run and has 15 to 20 runs annually was investigated in this study. Eleven PCDD/F samples of stack flue gas were collected during the cold start-up periods (for 60.5 hrs). The gas temperature of the primary combustion chamber was above 850°C, and was maintained at between 850 and 900°C by injecting diesel fuel without waste feed. For first 1.5-7.5 hours, the PCDD/F concentration in the stack flue gas was as high as 0.656-1.15 ng I-TEQ/Nm^3. Afterward, during hours 10.5-35.5 and 54.5-60.5, this reduced to 0.159-0.459 and 0.218-0.254 ng I-TEQ/Nm^3, respectively. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and the L/H ratio, the results revealed a higher L/H ratio (1.23) before hour 32, indicating that less chlorinated PCDD/F homologues (tetra and penta) dominated, while after hour 32 more chlorinated PCDD/F homologues (hexa, hepta and Octa) had a higher mass concentration and the L/H ratio fell to 0.42. These results indicate that the PCDD/F emissions during cold start-up were caused by memory effects and thermal desorption. Therefore, in order to reduce the PCDD/F emissions from the stack flue gas of waste incinerators, is highly recommended that a higher amount of activated carbon injection is used in front of the bag filters.

This study describes polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) behavior during the incineration of laboratory waste, including combustible laboratory solid waste (LSW), laboratory plastic waste (LPW), and organic laboratory liquid waste (LLW). Stack flue gas (SFG), input materials, bottom ash (BTA), first quenching tower ash (FQA), secondary quenching tower ash (SQA), and baghouse ash (BHA) were sampled and analyzed using high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) assay and bioassay. The PCDD/F concentration of SFG met the standard in Taiwan. The Cl levels of LPW and LLW were roughly equivalent to that of municipal solid waste (MSW). Therefore, the SFG concentration, content of fly ash, and distribution behavior of PCDD/Fs are reasonably similar to those of MSW incinerators. The LSW had an extremely high Cl level (11.4%). The emission factor of the whole incineration system was 888 µg I-TEQ/ton-waste, which is 10-fold higher than that of MSW. The PCDD/F was mainly in BTA (31.6 wt.%) and fly ash (63.1 wt.%), resulting in higher PCDD/F level of ashes compared with that of MSW ashes. Both HRGC/HRMS analysis and bioassay results show similar PCDD/F emission characteristics during the incineration of LW. In addition, the linear regression between the values acquired using these two methods show a good relation (R 2 > 0.84), indicating that Ad-DR bioassay is a promising fast-screen method for determining PCDD/F levels.

This study examines the heating value and combustion efficiency of organic sludge derived fuel, spent activated carbon derived fuel, and derived fuel from a mixture of organic sludge and spent activated carbon. Spent activated carbon was sampled from an air pollution control device of an incinerator and characterized by XRD, XRF, TG/DTA, and SEM. The spent activated carbon was washed with deionized water and solvent (1 N sulfuric acid) and then processed by the organic sludge derived fuel manufacturing process. After washing, the salt (chloride) and sulfide content could be reduced to 99% and 97%, respectively; in addition the carbon content and heating value were increased. Different ratios of spent activated carbon have been applied to the organic sludge derived fuel to reduce the NOx emission of the combustion.

The three previously cloned Cyprinus carpio muscle-specific subisoforms of creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) designated M1-, M2- and M3-CK were examined. At temperatures 7·7, specific activities of M1-CK were three to eight-fold higher than specific activities of M3- and rabbit (R) M-CK. At pH 8·0, M1-CK exhibited its highest specific activity at 15° C. Michaelis constants of PCr () and ADP () of M1-CK were relatively stable at pH between 7·1–8·0 and 25–5° C. Its calculated activation energy of catalysis (Ea) at pH 8·0 was lower than at pH 7·1. Circular dichroism spectroscopy results showed that changes in secondary structures in M1-CK at the pH and temperatures studied were much less than in the cases of RM- and M3-CK. The M1-CK enzyme seemed to have evolved to adapt to the synchronized changes in body temperature and intracellular pH of C. carpio.

Herpes zoster is rare in healthy children, but immunocompromised persons have an increased risk of herpes zoster and severe diseases. Considering the very limited information on herpes zoster in children with cancer, we performed a nationwide population-based cohort study to estimate the incidence of herpes zoster in children with cancer and to explore the association between the 2 diseases. Data were obtained from the National Health Research Institutes Database in Taiwan. A total of 4432 children with newly diagnosed cancer between 2000 and 2007 were identified as the cancer cohort, and 17,653 children without cancer frequency-matched by sex and age at entry were considered the noncancer cohort. The association between herpes zoster and childhood cancer was determined. Children with cancer had a higher risk of herpes zoster. The incidence rate of herpes zoster was higher in the cancer cohort than in the noncancer cohort (20.7 vs 2.4 per 10,000 person-years; IRR = 8.6; 95% CI = 4.8–15.6). Background An outbreak of influenza virus infection occurred in Taiwan from October 2013 to May 2014. We conducted a clinical study to identify risk factors associated with severe influenza virus infections in children. Methods During the outbreak period, data from 110 hospitalized children with influenza virus infection were collected. We analyzed the data, the need for intensive care, and patient outcome to identify clinical features and risk factors of severe infections, defined as the need of intensive care. Results Of the 110 inpatients, there were 57 male and 53 female patients; the median age was 2.6 (interquartile range, 1.0–6.3) years. Nineteen patients required intensive care and two patients died. Children who were underweight ( p = 0.01) or those with neuromuscular disease ( p = 0.007) and digestive tract disease ( p = 0.03) were prone to severe infection. Occurrence of seizure ( p = 0.004), conscious disturbance ( p = 0.02), or low oxygen saturation at admission ( p = 0.04) predicted the need for intensive care. Higher initial absolute neutrophil count ( p = 0.02) and patch or pleural effusion on chest X-ray examination ( p = 0.02) were associated with severe infection. In the multivariable analysis, digestive tract disease [ p = 0.03; adjusted odds ratio (OR), 12.37; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.28–119.43], seizure ( p = 0.001; adjusted OR, 49.54; 95% CI, 4.61–532.76) and conscious disturbance ( p = 0.006; adjusted OR, 131.61; 95% CI, 4.18–4141.64) were most significantly associated with severe influenza virus infection. Conclusion Close monitoring of the important risk factors including underlying digestive tract diseases, seizure attack and conscious disturbance were recommended during the influenza season.
