1. The Use of Non-targeted Lipidomics and Histopathology to Characterize the Neurotoxicity of Bifenthrin to Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract

Due to the detection frequencies and measured concentrations in surface water, the type I pyrethroid insecticide, bifenthrin, has been of particular concern within the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in California. Concentrations have been detected above levels previously reported to impair neuroendocrine function and induce neurotoxicity to several species of salmonids. Metabolomic and transcriptomic studies indicated impairment of cellular signaling within the brain of exposed animals and potential alteration of lipid metabolism. To better understand the potential impacts of bifenthrin on brain lipids, juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to mean bifenthrin concentrations of 28 or 48 ng/L for 14 days, and non-targeted lipidomic profiling in the brain was conducted. Brain tissue sections were also assessed for histopathological insult following bifenthrin treatment. Bifenthrin-exposed trout had a concentration-dependent decrease in the relative abundance of triglycerides (TGs) with levels of phosphatidylcholines (PCs) and phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs) significantly altered following 48 ng/L bifenthrin exposure. An increased incidence of histopathological lesions, such as focal hemorrhages and congestion of blood vessels, was noted in the brains of bifenthrin-treated animals, suggesting an association between altered lipid metabolism and neuronal cell structure and integrity.

Abstract

Large-scale solar sails can provide power to spacecraft for deep space exploration. A new type of telescopic tubular mast (TTM) driven by a bistable carbon fiber-reinforced polymer tube was designed in this study to solve the problem of contact between the sail membrane and the spacecraft under light pressure. Compared with the traditional TTM, it has a small size, light weight, high extension ratio, and simple structure. The anti-blossoming and self-unlocking structure of the proposed TTM was described. We aimed to simplify the TTM with a complex structure into a beam model with equal linear mass density, and the simulation results showed good consistency. The dynamic equation was derived based on the equivalent model, and the effects of different factors on the vibration characteristics of the TTM were analyzed. The performance parameters were optimized based on a multiobjective genetic algorithm, and prototype production and load experiments were conducted. The results show that the advantages of the new TTM can complete the deployment of large-scale solar sails, which is valuable for future deep space exploration.

48. The Study on the Influence of the Containing Ice Ratio on the Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Ice Slurry in Coil Tubes

Abstract

The latent heat storage of ice slurry has great potential for application in cold storage air conditioning. However, due to the poor control of the containing ice ratio in the process of transportation and storage, there are phenomena such as stratification, aggregation, and even blockage in pipelines and as a result, such latent heats are still not used on a large scale. The effect of the containing ice ratio on ice flow and heat transfer characteristics of ice slurry in coils has been studied in this paper by numerical simulation method with inlet velocity of 0.1 m/s and pipe outside diameter of 10 mm as the simulation conditions. The results show that containing ice ratio of the ice slurry has a greater influence on the flow and heat transfer of the ice slurry in the coils. To be specific, if the containing ice ratio is too large, the ice particles can form a stagnant layer on top of the pipe, and even ice blocking phenomenon occurs at the bent position of the pipe, which is unfavorable to the flow and heat exchange of ice slurry; when the containing ice ratio of ice slurry is too low, the latent heat released by phase change is not sufficient enough and the heat exchange capacity is rather small. In order to effectively reduce the ice blocking phenomenon, ensure the smooth flow of ice slurry, enhance the heat transfer effect, and reduce the power consumption, according to this study, the ideal containing ice ratio of ice slurry is between for 5–10%.

Abstract

A 39-year-old male patient presented with an extensive putrescent ulceration of abdominoperineal region infiltrated by advanced penile squamous cell carcinoma. To our knowledge, it is the largest defect after aggressive palliative resection of penile squamous cell carcinoma (pSCC) in the literature, which was 36×23 cm. The defect was divided into three sub-defects, and was repaired by bilateral anteromedial thigh (AMT) and left deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flaps. The postoperative course was uneventful and no flap necrosis occurred. The symptom relief was excellent.
