One approach to extend the acoustic applications of aluminum nitride (AlN) in the GHz frequency range is to take advantage of the piezoelectric performance and high acoustic velocity (∼11 350 m/s) along the c-axis of this material. In particular, in the case of high-frequency micro-electromechanical systems, it should be possible to simplify the construction of resonators by using a-plane AlN-based structures. In the work described in this Letter, a single-crystalline a-plane AlN layer on an r-plane sapphire substrate is obtained by combining sputtering and high-temperature annealing. Based on this non-polar AlN, a resonator with only planar interdigital transducer electrodes is fabricated. Experiments on this resonator reveal simultaneous excitation of an anisotropic Rayleigh surface acoustic wave (SAW) at 2.38 GHz and a laterally excited bulk acoustic wave (LBAW) at 4.00 GHz. It is found that the Rayleigh SAW exhibits outstanding performance, with a quality factor as high as 2458 and great stability under variations in temperature. The LBAW at 4.00 GHz is excited by pure planar interdigitated electrodes without the need for any cavity or bottom electrode structure, thus demonstrating a promising approach to the construction of high-frequency resonators with a relatively simple structure. Horizontal, single-dimensional, trianglelike poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanorods are prepared under lateral nanoconfinement induced by faceted m-plane sapphire surfaces. X-ray diffraction reciprocal space mappings reveal that the polymer contains polycrystalline ferroelectric β-phase PVDF. Depolarizing fields induce different polarizations in polymer nanorods along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions. The differences are characterized using vector piezoresponse force microscopy. The depolarizing fields in the lateral PVDF-TrFE nanorods are further discussed in theory. Our results suggest that a nanofaceted m-plane sapphire can be an alternative template to induce the depolarizing fields for future nanosacle devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, temperature-dependent in situ x-ray diffraction reciprocal space mappings are employed to reveal three-dimensional lattice shear deformation in epitaxial VO2 variants, and linear Lagrangian strain tensors of epitaxial lattices are deduced by metric tensors of the reciprocal space at various temperatures. An equilibrium modulated-monoclinic phase is identified above the critical temperature, which is permitted in a translationengleiche subgroup from high symmetry with an index of 4. Being different from the conventional low-temperature monoclinic phase, the high-temperature monoclinic phase presents a specific metallic feature, which is ascribed to the Mott–Hubbard and charge density wave mechanisms. Under the proposed general procedure, which precisely identifies the normal and shear strain status of deformed lattices, it is demonstrated that the structural symmetry reduction under shear deformation unambiguously acts as the origin of unexpected metallic modulated-monoclinic VO2 at high temperatures. Metal oxide vertically aligned nanocomposite thin films have been of considerable interest for hot-carrier-based light harvesting and active plasmonic applications. Herein, we present femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy studies on a nanocomposite thin film with plasmonic Au nanopillars vertically aligned in a ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) matrix. Our measurements reveal that the carrier decay of Au/LSMO films qualitatively follows that of pure LSMO with a two-component relaxation. In the presence of Au nanopillars, the charge generation within the LSMO film is enhanced by a factor of ∼40, and the spin–lattice relaxation time associated with demagnetization is substantially decreased from 259.6 to 7.7 ps. The enhanced nonequilibrium dynamics and energy transfer between the lattice and spin system in the Au/LSMO films can be well modeled using an extended three-temperature model. High-quality epitaxial LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films have been deposited on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). We find that the LCO films undergo a typical ferromagnetic–paramagnetic (FM–PM) phase transition at ∼80 K. To understand the nature of magnetic phase transition, various methods, including the modified Arrott plot and critical isotherm analysis, were used to determine the critical exponents, which are β = 0.754(1) with a Curie temperature TC = 79.8(8) K and γ = 1.52(2) with TC = 79.9(2) K. The reliability of these critical exponents was confirmed using the Widom scaling relation and the scaling hypothesis. Further analysis revealed that the spin coupling within the LCO films exhibits two-dimensional (2D) long-range magnetic interaction and the magnetic exchange distance decays as J(r) ∼ r−(3.46). Our critical behavior analysis may shed new light on the further understanding of the origin of FM and the relatively fixed TC in LCO thin films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to environmental concerns and the increasing drive towards miniaturization of electronic circuits and devices, lead-free ferroelectric films with low leakage current and robust ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties are highly desired. The preferred alternative, BaTiO3, is non-toxic and has ferroelectric properties, but its high leakage current, poor ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity and low Curie temperature of ∼130 °C in thin film form are obstacles for high-temperature practical applications. Here, we report that a negative-pressure-driven enhancement of ferroelectric Curie temperature and effective piezoelectric coefficient are achieved in (111)-oriented BaTiO3 nanocomposite films. The enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties in the emergent monoclinic BaTiO3 are attributed to the sharp vertical interface and 3D tensile strain that develops upon interspersing stiff and self-assembled vertical Sm2O3 nanopillars through the film thickness. Our work also demonstrates that fabricating oxide films through (111)-oriented epitaxy opens up new avenues for the creation of new phase components and exploration of novel functionalities for developing oxide quantum electronic devices.
