Abstract During the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have adopted various crisis management techniques, including bricolage-coping strategies, to strengthen their organizational resilience. However, the specific impact of bricolage on SMEs’ resilience and the factors influencing this relationship are not fully understood. Our study explores a theoretical framework that suggests the effectiveness of the bricolage–resilience relationship is contingent on government support and business process innovation during crises. An analysis of responses from the Korean Innovation Survey 2021 shows that SMEs utilizing bricolage strategies exhibit greater resilience than those relying solely on conventional crisis responses. Interestingly, the resilience implication of bricolage diminishes when firms receive government financial aid or engage in business process innovations. This suggests that government financial support might reduce the necessity for self-reliant resilience strategies in firms practicing bricolage, while business process innovation may create challenges in productive resource orchestration between firm survival and growth.

Abstract Background The Plasmodium vivax merozoite restrictively invades immature erythrocytes, suggesting that its ligand(s) might interact with corresponding receptor(s) that are selectively abundant on reticulocytes to complete the invasion. Finding the ligand‒receptor interaction involved in P. vivax invasion is critical to vivax malaria management; nevertheless, it remains to be unraveled. Methods A library of reticulocyte receptors and P. vivax ligands were expressed by a HEK293E mammalian cell expression system and were then used to screen the interaction using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A flow cytometry-based erythrocyte binding assay and bio-layer interferometry experiment were further utilized to cellularly and quantitatively identify the ligand‒receptor interaction, respectively. Results Plasmodium vivax merozoite-specific thrombospondin-related anonymous protein (PvMTRAP) was found to interact with human CD36 using systematic screening. This interaction was specific at a molecular level from in vitro analysis and comparable to that of P. vivax Duffy binding protein (PvDBP) and Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) (K D: 37.0 ± 1.4 nM and 7.7 ± 0.5 nM, respectively). Flow cytometry indicated that PvMTRAP preferentially binds to reticulocytes, on which CD36 is selectively present. Conclusions Human CD36 is selectively abundant on reticulocytes and is able to interact specifically with PvMTRAP, suggesting that it may function as a ligand and receptor during the invasion of reticulocytes by P. vivax. Introduction Lumbar radicular pain (LRP) is a common symptom characterised by a sharp, shooting or lancinating sensation localised to one or more dermatomes of the lumbar spine. Despite its high prevalence and significant impact on quality of life, the most effective conservative treatment for patients with LRP remains uncertain. When conventional treatment methods do not provide satisfactory results, the option of using epidural steroids and/or pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) treatment may be considered as a secondary approach for managing the condition. Ongoing advances in the field have led to a wide range of PRF parameters being investigated and extensively documented. Therefore, this study will aim to evaluate the treatment efficacy, sustainability and adverse effects of PRF application for different durations in patients with LRP.Methods and analysis This study will be a double-blind, randomised, controlled trial. Eligible patients with LRP who visit the International St. Mary’s Hospital pain clinic in Korea will be assigned to three groups (1:1:1 ratio) based on the duration of PRF application: 240, 360 and 480 s. Outcome measures will include an assessment of radicular pain intensity, physical function, global improvement, treatment satisfaction and adverse events. The primary outcome will be a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score 3 months after the procedure. The secondary outcomes will be the number of subjects in each group reporting successful treatment defined as a significant decrease of NRS or improved physical function score or high satisfaction at the 3 and 6 months follow-up. X2 or Fisher’s exact test and one-way analysis of variance will be used to compare the outcomes.Ethics and dissemination This trial was approved by the Ethics Committee of Catholic Kwandong University International St. Mary’s Hospital (IS23EISE0018). The findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences.Trial registration number KCT0008612.

Abstract The engineering of atomically-precise nanopores in two-dimensional materials presents exciting opportunities for both fundamental science studies as well as applications in energy, DNA sequencing, and quantum information technologies. The exceptional chemical and thermal stability of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) suggest that exposed h-BN nanopores will retain their atomic structure even when subjected to extended periods of time in gas or liquid environments. Here we employ transmission electron microscopy to examine the time evolution of h-BN nanopores in vacuum and in air and find, even at room temperature, dramatic geometry changes due to atom motion and edge contamination adsorption, for timescales ranging from one hour to one week. The discovery of nanopore evolution contrasts with general expectations and has profound implications for nanopore applications of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract Quantum fluctuations of wavefunctions in disorder-driven quantum phase transitions (QPT) exhibit criticality, as evidenced by their multifractality and power law behavior. However, understanding the metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a continuous QPT in a disordered system has been challenging due to fundamental issues such as the lack of an apparent order parameter and its dynamical nature. Here, we elucidate the universal mechanism underlying the structural-disorder-driven MIT in 2D semiconductors through autocorrelation and multifractality of quantum fluctuations. The structural disorder causes curvature-induced band gap fluctuations, leading to charge localization and formation of band tails near band edges. As doping level increases, the localization-delocalization transition occurs when states above a critical energy become uniform due to unusual band bending by localized charge. Furthermore, curvature induces local variations in spin-orbit interactions, resulting in non-uniform ferromagnetic domains. Our findings demonstrate that the structural disorder in 2D materials is essential to understanding the intricate phenomena associated with localization-delocalization transition, charge percolation, and spin glass with both topological and magnetic disorders.

We prepared a long-arm octopus Jangjorim prototype (LOJP) by optimizing the ratio of ingredients for seasoning and establishing heat sterilization parameters. The optimal amounts of purified water (2.9–56.6%, A), starch syrup (0.3–37.8%, B), and soy sauce (25.5–71.5%, C) for the production of seasoning soy sauce were obtained using response surface analysis. The LOJP was prepared by combining A, B, and C under the optimal conditions and evaluated for consumer preferences and physicochemical, nutritional, and microbiological properties and compared with Korea’s legal management standards for geriatric nutrition. The hardness of the LOJP produced using the optimal mixing ratio of purified water (51.2%, 154.0 g), starch syrup (29.3%, 308.0 g), and soy sauce (19.5%, 256.9 g) was 36.7 × 1000 N/m2. This value was lower than the hardness of raw octopus (2153.6 × 1000 N/m2) by 2116.9 × 1000 N/m2. It received the highest score (8.7) in the preference evaluation of older consumers. The LOJP was classified as level 2, allowing consumption through the gums of elderly consumers per Korea’s food standards for the elderly. The LOJP was the product highly preferred by elderly consumers with chewing disorders due to its ease of intake and nutritional content.

Abstract Background Imaging techniques are commonly used to understand disease mechanisms and their biological features in the microenvironment of the cell. Many studies have added to our understanding of the biology of the malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi from functional in vitro and imaging analysis using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, sample fixation and metal coating during SEM analysis can alter the parasite membrane. Methods In this study, we used noninvasive diffraction optical tomography (DOT), also known as holotomography, to explore the morphological, biochemical, and mechanical alterations of each stage of P. knowlesi-infected red blood cells (RBCs). Each stage of the parasite was synchronized using Nycodenz and magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) for P. knowlesi and P. falciparum, respectively. Holotomography was applied to measure individual three-dimensional refractive index tomograms without metal coating, fixation, or additional dye agent. Results Distinct profiles were found on the surface area and hemoglobin content of the two parasites. The surface area of P. knowlesi-infected RBCs showed significant expansion, while P. falciparum-infected RBCs did not show any changes compared to uninfected RBCs. In terms of hemoglobin consumption, P. falciparum tended to consume hemoglobin more than P. knowlesi. The observed profile of P. knowlesi-infected RBCs generally showed similar results to other studies, proving that this technique is unbiased. Conclusions The observed profile of the surface area and hemoglobin content of malaria infected-RBCs can potentially be used as a diagnostic parameter to distinguish P. knowlesi and P. falciparum infection. In addition, we showed that holotomography could be used to study each Plasmodium species in greater depth, supporting strategies for the development of diagnostic and treatment strategies for malaria. Our previous study observed the localization-delocalization transition and critical quantum fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) on the structurally disordered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor MoS_{2}. This transition corresponds to the metal-insulator transition (MIT) reported in transport measurements. The structural disorder in MoS_{2} caused curvature-induced band gap fluctuations, leading to charge localization and unusual band edge flattening through doping. The critical behavior for the MIT was analyzed using autocorrelation and multifractality of LDOS mapping results. However, the effect of structural disorder on critical points has not been fully explored. Here, we systematically investigated the impact of structural disorder on band tail formation and critical doping concentration by examining the radial-averaged autocorrelation and multifractality of LDOS in 2D semiconductors. Our finding indicates that the radial-averaged autocorrelation and multifractality of LDOS characterize the band tail ranges and band edge flattening in disordered 2D semiconductors. Decaying regions in the radial-averaged autocorrelation profile and first-order derivative of singularity peak positions determine band tail ranges. Increased structural disorder led to larger band tail widths near valence and conduction band edges, while the doping-induced band edge flattening altered band tail widths for each valence and conduction band. As the band edge is flattened due to doping, the LDOS map near the critical energy becomes uniform, exhibiting a divergence in the localization length. The average value of conduction and valence band tail widths remained almost constant regardless of doping control, serving as a representative value for the degree of structural disorder. For the MIT, we found that the critical doping concentration depends on the degree of structural disorder in 2D semiconductors. Our findings provide valuable insights into the fundamental physics of structurally disordered 2D semiconductors in relevance to quantum phase transitions, which could have important implications for designing and optimizing electronic/optoelectronic devices based on 2D materials.

Since the first African swine fever (ASF) outbreak occurred at a pig farm in South Korea in September 2019, as of 31 January 2023, 31 ASF cases have occurred at pig farms, while 2799 ASF virus (ASFV)-infected wild boars have been identified. The circulation of ASFV in wild boar populations poses a high risk of spillover to pig farms in the country. However, information on the changes in the pathogenicity of Korean ASFV strains from wild boars is not available. Investigating the pathogenicity of ASFV strains from pig farms is the only way to predict their alterations. In a previous study, no changes in the pathogenicity of ASFV strains circulating during 2019–2021 were identified through animal experiments. In this study, we chose two ASFV strains with potentially reduced pathogenicity among ten viruses obtained from pig premises from 2022 to January 2023 and estimated their pathogenicities and pathological characteristics. All the inoculated pigs died 8–10 days post–inoculation after showing pyrexia, depression, anorexia, and recumbency together with the common pathological lesions of enlarged hemorrhagic lymph nodes and splenomegaly with infarction. These results support that the pathogenicity among ASFV isolates in South Korea still remained unchanged during the study period.

Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread cause of human malaria. Recent reports of drug resistant vivax malaria and the challenge of eradicating the dormant liver forms increase the importance of vaccine development against this relapsing disease. P. vivax reticulocyte binding protein 1a (PvRBP1a) is a potential vaccine candidate, which is involved in red cell tropism, a crucial step in the merozoite invasion of host reticulocytes. As part of the initial evaluation of the PvRBP1a vaccine candidate, we investigated its genetic diversity and antigenicity using geographically diverse clinical isolates. We analysed pvrbp1a genetic polymorphisms using 202 vivax clinical isolates from six countries. Pvrbp1a was separated into six regions based on specific domain features, sequence conserved/polymorphic regions, and the reticulocyte binding like (RBL) domains. In the fragmented gene sequence analysis, PvRBP1a region II (RII) and RIII (head and tail structure homolog, 152-625 aa.) showed extensive polymorphism caused by random point mutations. The haplotype network of these polymorphic regions was classified into three clusters that converged to independent populations. Antigenicity screening was performed using recombinant proteins PvRBP1a-N (157-560 aa.) and PvRBP1a-C (606-962 aa.), which contained head and tail structure region and sequence conserved region, respectively. Sensitivity against PvRBP1a-N (46.7%) was higher than PvRBP1a-C (17.8%). PvRBP1a-N was reported as a reticulocyte binding domain and this study identified a linear epitope with moderate antigenicity, thus an attractive domain for merozoite invasion-blocking vaccine development. However, our study highlights that a global PvRBP1a-based vaccine design needs to overcome several difficulties due to three distinct genotypes and low antigenicity levels.

Abstract Background Malaria parasites form intracellular membranes that separate the parasite from the internal space of erythrocytes, and membrane proteins from the parasites are exported to the host via the membrane. In our previous study, Plasmodium vivax early transcribed membrane protein (PvETRAMP) 11.2, an intracellular membrane protein that is highly expressed in blood-stage parasites, was characterized as a highly immunogenic protein in P. vivax malaria patients. However, the other PvETRAMP family proteins have not yet been investigated. In this study, PvETRAMPs were expressed and evaluated to determine their immunological profiles. Methods The protein structure and amino acid alignment were carried out using bioinformatics analysis software. A total of six PvETRAMP family proteins were successfully expressed and purified using a wheat germ cell free protein expression system and the purified proteins were used for protein microarray and immunization of mice. The localization of the protein was determined with serum against PvETRAMP4. IgG subclasses were assessed from the immunized mice. Results In silico analysis showed that P. vivax exhibits nine genes encoding the ETRAMP family. The ETRAMP family proteins are relatively small molecules with conserved structural features. A total of 6 recombinant ETRAMP proteins were successfully expressed and purified. The serum positivity of P. vivax malaria patients and healthy individuals was evaluated using a protein microarray method. Among the PvETRAMPs, ETRAMP4 showed the highest positivity rate of 62%, comparable to that of PvETRAMP11.2, which served as the positive control, and a typical export pattern of PvETRAMP4 was observed in the P. vivax parasite. The assessment of IgG subclasses in mice immunized with PvETRAMP4 showed high levels of IgG1 and IgG2b. PvETRAMP family proteins were identified and characterized as serological markers. Conclusions The relatively high antibody responses to PvETRAMP4 as well as the specific IgG subclasses observed in immunized mice suggest that the ETRAMP family is immunogenic in pathogens and can be used as a protein marker and for vaccine development.

The Plasmodium ovale curtisi (Poc) prevalence has increased substantially in sub-Saharan African countries as well as regions of Southeast Asia. Poc parasite biology has not been explored much to date; in particular, the invasion mechanism of this malaria parasite remains unclear. In this study, the binding domain of the Duffy binding protein of P. ovale curtisi (PocDBP) was characterized as an important ligand for reticulocyte invasion. The homologous region of the P. vivax Duffy binding protein in PocDBP, named PocDBP-RII herein, was selected, and the recombinant PocDBP-RII protein was expressed in an Escherichia coli system. This was used to analyze reticulocyte binding activity using fluorescence-activated cell sorting and immune serum production in rabbits. The binding specificity was proven by treating reticulocytes with trypsin, chymotrypsin and neuraminidase. The amino acid sequence homology in the N-terminal Cys-rich region was found to be ~ 44% between PvDBP and PocDBP. The reticulocyte binding activity of PocDBP-RII was significantly higher than the erythrocyte binding activity and was concentration dependent. Erythrocyte binding was reduced significantly by chymotrypsin treatment and inhibited by an anti-PocDBP-RII antibody. This finding suggests that PocDBP may be an important ligand in the reticulocyte invasion process of P. ovale curtisi.

Feature-based target detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is required for monitoring situations where it is difficult to obtain a large amount of data, such as in tactical regions. Although many features have been studied for target detection in SAR images, their performance depends on the characteristics of the images, and both efficiency and performance deteriorate when the features are used indiscriminately. In this study, we propose a two-stage detection framework to ensure efficient and superior detection performance in TSX images, using previously studied features. The proposed method consists of two stages. The first stage uses simple features to eliminate misdetections. Next, the discrimination performance for the target and clutter of each feature is evaluated and those features suitable for the image are selected. In addition, the Karhunen–Loève (KL) transform reduces the redundancy of the selected features and maximizes discrimination performance. By applying the proposed method to actual TerraSAR-X (TSX) images, the majority of the identified clusters of false detections were excluded, and the target of interest could be distinguished.

Abstract Tumor-associated lymphatic vessels (LV) serve as a route of cancer dissemination through the prometastatic crosstalk between lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) lining the LVs and cancer cells. Compared to blood endothelial cell-derived angiocrine factors, however, LEC-secreted factors in the tumor microenvironment and their roles in tumor metastasis are poorly understood. Here, we report that ELK3 expressed in LECs contributes to the dissemination of cancer cells during tumor growth by providing oncogenic miRNAs to tumor cells through exosomes. We found that conditioned medium from ELK3-suppressed LECs (LCM) lost its ability to promote the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells such as MDA-MB-231, Hs578T and BT20 in vitro. Suppression of ELK3 in LECs diminished the ability of LECs to promote tumor growth and metastasis of MDA-MB-231 in vivo. Exosomes derived from LECs significantly increased the migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 in vitro, but ELK3 suppression significantly diminished the pro-oncogenic activity of exosomes from LECs. Based on the miRNA expression profiles of LECs and functional analysis, we identified miR-503-3p, miR-4269 and miR-30e-3p as downstream targets of ELK3 in LECs, which cause the above phenotype of cancer cells. These findings strongly suggest that ELK3 expressed in LECs is a major regulator that controls the communication between the tumor microenvironment and tumors to support cancer metastasis.

Objective When performing lightwand intubation, an improper transmitted glow position before tube advancement can cause intubation failure or laryngeal injury. This study was performed to explore the transmitted glow point corresponding to a priori chosen depth for lightwand intubation. Methods Before lightwand intubation, we marked the transmitted glow point from a bronchoscope on the neck when it reached 1 cm below the vocal cords. Lightwand intubation was then performed using this marking point. The distances from the mark to the upper border of the thyroid cartilage, upper border of the cricoid cartilage, and suprasternal notch were measured. Results In total, 107 patients were enrolled. The success rate of lightwand intubation using the mark was 93.5% (95% confidence interval, 88.7%–99.2%) at the first attempt. The marking point was placed 12.0 mm (95% confidence interval, 10.6–13.4 mm) below the upper border of the cricoid cartilage. Conclusion Anaesthesiologists should be aware of the appropriate point of the transmitted glow on the patient’s neck when performing lightwand intubation. We suggest that this point is approximately 1 cm below the upper border of the cricoid cartilage. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03480035

Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread and difficult to treat cause of human malaria. The development of vaccines against the blood stages of P. vivax remains a key objective for the control and elimination of vivax malaria. Erythrocyte binding-like (EBL) protein family members such as Duffy binding protein (PvDBP) are of critical importance to erythrocyte invasion and have been the major target for vivax malaria vaccine development. In this study, we focus on another member of EBL protein family, P. vivax erythrocyte binding protein (PvEBP). PvEBP was first identified in Cambodian (C127) field isolates and has subsequently been showed its preferences for binding reticulocytes which is directly inhibited by antibodies. We analysed PvEBP sequence from 316 vivax clinical isolates from eight countries including China (n = 4), Ethiopia (n = 24), Malaysia (n = 53), Myanmar (n = 10), Papua New Guinea (n = 16), Republic of Korea (n = 10), Thailand (n = 174), and Vietnam (n = 25). PvEBP gene exhibited four different phenotypic clusters based on the insertion/deletion (indels) variation. PvEBP-RII (179-479 aa.) showed highest polymorphism similar to other EBL family proteins in various Plasmodium species. Whereas even though PvEBP-RIII-V (480-690 aa.) was the most conserved domain, that showed strong neutral selection pressure for gene purifying with significant population expansion. Antigenicity of both of PvEBP-RII (16.1%) and PvEBP-RIII-V (21.5%) domains were comparatively lower than other P. vivax antigen which expected antigens associated with merozoite invasion. Total IgG recognition level of PvEBP-RII was stronger than PvEBP-RIII-V domain, whereas total IgG inducing level was stronger in PvEBP-RIII-V domain. These results suggest that PvEBP-RII is mainly recognized by natural IgG for innate protection, whereas PvEBP-RIII-V stimulates IgG production activity by B-cell for acquired immunity. Overall, the low antigenicity of both regions in patients with vivax malaria likely reflects genetic polymorphism for strong positive selection in PvEBP-RII and purifying selection in PvEBP-RIII-V domain. These observations pose challenging questions to the selection of EBP and point out the importance of immune pressure and polymorphism required for inclusion of PvEBP as a vaccine candidate.

Malaria is caused by multiple different species of protozoan parasites, and interventions in the pre-elimination phase can lead to drastic changes in the proportion of each species causing malaria. In endemic areas, cross-reactivity may play an important role in the protection and blocking transmission. Thus, successful control of one species could lead to an increase in other parasite species. A few studies have reported cross-reactivity producing cross-immunity, but the extent of cross-reactive, particularly between closely related species, is poorly understood. P. vivax and P. knowlesi are particularly closely related species causing malaria infections in SE Asia, and whilst P. vivax cases are in decline, zoonotic P. knowlesi infections are rising in some areas. In this study, the cross-species reactivity and growth inhibition activity of P. vivax blood-stage antigen-specific antibodies against P. knowlesi parasites were investigated. Bioinformatics analysis, immunofluorescence assay, western blotting, protein microarray, and growth inhibition assay were performed to investigate the cross-reactivity. P. vivax blood-stage antigen-specific antibodies recognized the molecules located on the surface or released from apical organelles of P. knowlesi merozoites. Recombinant P. vivax and P. knowlesi proteins were also recognized by P. knowlesi- and P. vivax-infected patient antibodies, respectively. Immunoglobulin G against P. vivax antigens from both immune animals and human malaria patients inhibited the erythrocyte invasion by P. knowlesi. This study demonstrates that there is extensive cross-reactivity between antibodies against P. vivax to P. knowlesi in the blood stage, and these antibodies can potently inhibit in vitro invasion, highlighting the potential cross-protective immunity in endemic areas.

Summary: The physiological effects of the many germline mutations of TP53, encoding the tumor suppressor protein p53, are poorly understood. Here we report generating a p53 R178C knockin mouse modeling the human TP53 R181C mutation, which is notable for its prevalence and prior molecular characterization. Consistent with its weak cancer penetrance in humans, homozygous p53178C/C mice show a modest increase in tumorigenesis but, surprisingly, are lean with decreased body fat content. They display evidence of increased lipolysis and upregulation of fatty acid metabolism in their inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT). Gene expression and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) analyses show that the mutant p53 bound and transactivated Beta-3-Adrenergic Receptor (ADRB3), a gene that is known to promote lipolysis and is associated with obesity. This study reveals that a germline mutation of p53 can affect fat metabolism, which has been implicated in cancer development. : Knockin of the mouse homolog of a human TP53 germline mutation known to cause Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a cancer predisposition disorder, results in a mouse model characterized by lower body fat content. Kang et al. show that enhancing transactivation of the lipolytic gene ADRB3 by mutant p53 contributes to this phenotype. Abstract Background The rapid process of malaria erythrocyte invasion involves ligand–receptor interactions. Inducing antibodies against specific ligands or receptors that abrogate the invasion process is a key challenge for blood stage vaccine development. However, few candidates were reported and remain to be validated for the discovery of new vaccine candidates in Plasmodium knowlesi. Methods In order to investigate the efficacy of pre-clinical vaccine candidates in P. knowlesi-infected human cases, this study describes an in vitro invasion inhibition assay, using a P. knowlesi strain adapted to in vitro growth in human erythrocytes, PkA1-H.1. Recombinant proteins of P. knowlesi Duffy binding protein alpha (PkDBPα) and apical membrane antigen 1 (PkAMA1) were produced in Escherichia coli system and rabbit antibodies were generated from immune animals. Results PkDBPα and PkAMA1 recombinant proteins were expressed as insoluble and produced as a functional refolded form for this study. Antibodies against PkDBPα and PkAMA1 specifically recognized recombinant proteins and native parasite proteins in schizont-stage parasites on the merozoite organelles. Single and combination of anti-PkDBPα and anti-PkAMA1 antibodies elicited strong growth inhibitory effects on the parasite in concentration-dependent manner. Meanwhile, IgG prevalence of PkDBPα and PkAMA1 were observed in 13.0 and 46.7% in human clinical patients, respectively. Conclusion These data provide support for the validation of in vitro growth inhibition assay using antibodies of DBPα and AMA1 in human-adapted P. knowlesi parasite PkA1-H.1 strain.

Abstract Background As the prevalence of the malaria has been decreasing in many endemic countries including Myanmar, malaria elimination in Greater Mekong Region was targeted not later than 2030. The relevance of molecular and serological tools to identify residual transmission remains to be established in this setting. Methods One-year cohort study was conducted and sera samples were collected in every 3 months with active and passive case detection for clinical malaria episodes by RDT, microscopy and molecular method. The sera were used to detect the malaria antibody against PfMSP1-19, PvAMA1, PvDBPII and PvMSP1-19 by protein microarray. Results Among the recruited 1182 participants, there was no RDT positive case for malaria infection although two vivax infections were detected by microscopy in initial collection. Molecular methods detected the asymptomatic cases of 28/1182 (2.37%) in first, 5/894 (0.42%) in second, 12/944 (1.02%) in third, 6/889 (0.51%) in fourth collection, respectively. Seropositivity rates against the PfMSP1-19, PvMSP1-19, PvAMA1 and PvDBPII were 73/270 (27.0%), 85/270 (31.5%), 65/270 (24.1%) and 160/270 (59.3%), respectively. PfMSP1-19 and PvMSP1-19 showed high and stable antigenicity in acute and subacute samples but declining in 1-year history samples. No cross reactivity of PfMSP1-19 and PvMSP1-19 between the two species and higher seropositivity among the asymptomatic carriers were observed. Mapping data indicated serological surveillance can detect the geographical pattern of malaria infection under low transmission setting. Conclusions These findings support that PfMSP1-19 and PvMSP1-19 are suggested for serosurveillance of the malaria especially in low transmission setting for further necessary actions have to be carried out to eliminate the malaria.

In this study, we investigate the influence of Sc microalloying on the microstructure of the Al5083 alloy. Trace amounts of Sc addition drastically improve the mechanical properties of the Al5083 alloy from 216 MPa to 233 MPa. Macroscopically, the addition of Sc significantly reduces the grain size of Al by approximately 50%. Additionally, a microstructural investigation reveals that the Sc microalloying element induces fine Al3Sc nanoprecipitates in the Al matrix. The formation of Al3Sc nanoprecipitates results in a pinning effect on the dislocations, leading to accumulated dislocations. Compared to a Sc-free Al5083 alloy specimen, the number density of dislocations in the Sc-added Al5083 alloy significantly increases after hot rolling, enhancing the tensile properties. We reveal that the improved mechanical properties of Al5083 with Sc microalloying originate from the grain refinement and the formation of fine Al3Sc nanoprecipitates.

Although automatic target recognition (ATR) with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images has been one of the most important research topics, there is an inherent problem of performance degradation when the number of labeled SAR target images for training a classifier is limited. To address this problem, this article proposes a double squeeze-adaptive excitation (DS-AE) network where new channel attention modules are inserted into the convolutional neural network (CNN) with a modified ResNet18 architecture. Based on the squeeze-excitation (SE) network that employs a representative channel attention mechanism, the squeeze operation of the DS-AE network is carried out by additional fully connected layers to prevent drastic loss in the original channel information. Then, the subsequent excitation operation is performed by a new activation function, called the parametric sigmoid, to improve the adaptivity of selective emphasis of the useful channel information. Using the public SAR target dataset, the recognition rates from different network structures are compared by reducing the number of training images. The analysis results and performance comparison demonstrate that the DS-AE network showed much more improved SAR target recognition performances for small training datasets in relation to the CNN without channel attention modules and with the conventional SE channel attention modules.

Abstract We report on the synthesis of large-area molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) film on an insulating substrate by means of chemical vapor deposition. A single mixture of molybdenum hexacarbonyl (Mo(CO)6) and dimethyl disulfide (C2H6S2) was utilized as an organic liquid precursor for the synthesis of MoS2 film. Carbon impurities stemming from the dissociation of the organic precursor are effectively removed by water oxidation, and hydrogen gas, which is a by-product of the oxidation of carbon impurities, inhibits the formation of molybdenum oxides. The use of a liquid precursor assisted with water oxidation ensures high reproducibility and full-coverage of MoS2 film for large area, which is not typically achieved with solid precursors such as molybdenum oxide and sulfur powder. We believe that our approach will advance the synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides.

3-Dehydroshikimate (DHS) is a useful starting metabolite for the biosynthesis of muconic acid (MA) and shikimic acid (SA), which are precursors of various valuable polymers and drugs. Although DHS biosynthesis has been previously reported in several bacteria, the engineered strains were far from satisfactory, due to their low DHS titers. Here, we created an engineered Escherichia coli cell factory to produce a high titer of DHS as well as an efficient system for the conversion DHS into MA. First, the genes showing negative effects on DHS accumulation in E. coli, such as tyrR (tyrosine dependent transcriptional regulator), ptsG (glucose specific sugar: phosphoenolpyruvate phosphotransferase), and pykA (pyruvate kinase 2), were disrupted. In addition, the genes involved in DHS biosynthesis, such as aroB (DHQ synthase), aroD (DHQ dehydratase), ppsA (phosphoenolpyruvate synthase), galP (D-galactose transporter), aroG (DAHP synthase), and aroF (DAHP synthase), were overexpressed to increase the glucose uptake and flux of intermediates. The redesigned DHS-overproducing E. coli strain grown in an optimized medium produced ~117 g/L DHS in 7-L fed-batch fermentation, which is the highest level of DHS production demonstrated in E. coli. To accomplish the DHS-to-MA conversion, which is originally absent in E. coli, a codon-optimized heterologous gene cassette containing asbF, aroY, and catA was expressed as a single operon under a strong promoter in a DHS-overproducing E. coli strain. This redesigned E. coli grown in an optimized medium produced about 64.5 g/L MA in 7-L fed-batch fermentation, suggesting that the rational cell factory design of DHS and MA biosynthesis could be a feasible way to complement petrochemical-based chemical processes.

Study DesignA prospective sonographic study.PurposeTo verify the effectiveness of simultaneous application of two landmarks, Doppler image of the vertebral artery and shape of the transverse tubercle of the seventh cervical (C7) vertebra.Overview of LiteratureCounting upwards from the C7 vertebra which only has a posterior tubercle of the transverse process is a commonly used method for ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block. However, each transverse process has a different shape.MethodsSonograms of 20 volunteers were examined. At first, we identified the C7 transverse process based on the presence of the vertebral artery without the anterior tubercle. The C5 and C6 transverse processes were identified based on the presence of anterior tubercle without the vertebral artery. Subsequently, we placed needles on the C5, C6, and C7 transverse processes and the location and direction of needles were confirmed by fluoroscopy.ResultsIn the 120 segments, 93.3% of needles were placed correctly as desired; 97.5% of needles were placed on the 5C transverse process; 97.5% of needles were placed on the C6 transverse process; and 85.0% of needles were placed on the C7 transverse process, respectively. Both sides showed the same accuracy of 93.3%.ConclusionsSimultaneous application of Doppler image of the vertebral artery and shape of the C7 transverse tubercle showed 93.3% accuracy in identifying the target cervical level. Therefore, Doppler image of the vertebral artery can be considered to be a useful landmark for ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block.

The purpose of this study is to understand distributional characteristics in the atmospheric concentrations of O3 and its precursors based on data taken at the southern Korean coast. The average O3 concentration in the high altitude was found to range from 32.3 to 90.8 ppb with a maximum concentration of 132 ppb. The ambient O3 concentration was high at altitudes of 1000 m and 500 m above the southern sea near Gwangyang Bay and an industrial area containing emission sources. The daily mean concentrations of NOy and CO were 6.7-24.2 ppb and 0.152-0.487 ppm, respectively. During the aerial measurement period, the highest mean concentration of O3 was observed on June 1. The aerial measurement results showed that the maximum ozone concentration was observed to be 132 ppb in the high altitude the southernmost part of Yeosu. The measurement of vertical wind fields in the air indicated that O3 formed in the southernmost part of Yeosu was transported by strong southwesterly winds to the northeast of Gwangyang Bay. This led to a ground O3 concentration of over 100 ppb in Jinju, the northeastern part of Gwangyang Bay. On August 9, when the maximum O3 concentration was 50 ppb, the measurement results showed that O3 concentrations were relatively low compared to other days. In particular, low NO2 and TVOC concentrations were observed, both of which serve to form O3 in photochemical reactions.

(94-x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-6BaTiO3-x(K1/2Na1/2)NbO3 (NBT-6BT-xKNN) piezoelectric ceramics have notable potential for replacing lead containing piezoelectric ceramics in actuator applications due to their exceptionally large strain. However, a high electric field for producing a large strain and a large hysteresis are critical issues that should be resolved for practical actuator applications. In an attempt to address these issues and optimize the piezoelectric performance, we fabricated NBT-6BT-xKNN (x = 0 - 5) piezoelectric single crystals with a size of 8 x 8x 10 mm by the solid-state single crystal growth method and systematically measured their electrical properties. With increased addition of KNN to replace NBT, the ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity of the fabricated [001] NBT-6BT-xKNN single crystals decreased, but their unipolar strain and hysteresis were considerably improved. For NBT-6BT-5KNN single crystals, the largest maximum strain (Smax) was 0.57% at 6 kV/mm, showing a converse piezoelectric constant (Smax/Emax) of 950 pm/V, and their hysteresis in the unipolar S-E curve was 12% at 6kV/mm, which would be appropriate for some actuator applications. Our results demonstrate the applicability of the produced single crystals as lead-free piezoelectric actuator components.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) have garnered interest as efficient systems for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. One critical limitation hindering the widespread adoption of this technology is the long-term degradation of electrodes. In addition, ensuring the durability of the electrolyte remains a significant challenge. This study delves into the degradation mechanism of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with varying Y2O3 compositions under an applied electric potential. In a comprehensive investigation of the degradation behavior of YSZ electrolytes with Y2O3 doping ranging between 8 and 10 mol%, the 8YSZ composition exhibited a pronounced reduction in ionic conductivity compared to 9.5YSZ and 10YSZ. Although 8YSZ exhibits the highest ionic conductivity, it has been determined that, under SOEC operating conditions, a Y2O3 doping concentration exceeding 8 mol% is required for stability owing to the precipitation around the electrode induced by the electric field. Electrical analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to assess the degradation behavior of the electrolyte. K-means clustering was applied to highlight the disorder in defects observed through energy-dispersive spectroscopy. This study elucidates the underlying mechanisms governing electrolyte degradation in SOECs and recommends optimal YSZ compositions for prolonged operation, considering thermal stability and durability under SOEC operating conditions. Background/Aims: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in tumor cells is associated with a poor biliary tract cancer (BTC) prognosis; tumor-infiltrating immune cells in the tumor microenvironment are associated with a better prognosis. The effect of PD-L1 expression on immune cells on survival is unclear. We investigated the relationship between PD-L1 expression in immune cells and BTC prognosis. Methods: PD-L1 expression was evaluated using an anti-PD-L1 22C3 mouse monoclonal primary antibody, and its relationships with clinical characteristics and prognosis were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model to investigate the prognostic performance of PD-L1 in BTC. Results: Among 144 analyzed cases, patients with positive PD-L1 expression in tumor cells and negative PD-L1 expression in immune cells showed poorer overall survival rates than those exhibiting other expressions (tumor cells: hazard ratio [HR]=1.023, p<0.001; immune cells: HR=0.983, p=0.021). PD-L1 expression in tumor cells was an independent predictor of poor overall survival (HR=1.024, p<0.001). In contrast, PD-L1 expression in immune cells was a predictive marker of good prognosis (HR=0.983, p=0.018). Conclusions: PD-L1 expression in immune cells may be used as an independent factor to evaluate the prognosis of patients with BTC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
