Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Ischemic stroke causes damages to both gray and white matter, resulting in long-term motor impairments. Myelin repair is a promising strategy for poststroke motor rehabilitation. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD) is a classical traditional Chinese medicine formula for managing the sequelae of ischemic stroke. Whether BHD benefits gray and white matter remyelination following stroke remains to be elucidated., Aim of the Study: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of BHD on the gray and white matter remyelination following ischemic stroke and further explore the underlying mechanisms by combining magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histological experiments., Materials and Methods: The ischemic stroke model was established in male Sprague-Dawley rats by permanently occluding the middle cerebral artery (MCAO). BHD (16.6 g/kg and 8.3 g/kg) was intragastrically administered to rats for 30 days. The motor function was assessed by an automated Digi gait system. The structural integrity of the motor cortex and external capsule was monitored by MRI, including T2 mapping and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The remyelination was examined by Olig2/Ki67, 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase)/Ki67 double immunofluorescence staining and Luxol fast blue (LFB) staining. Subsequently, the Notch signaling activation in astrocytes and microglia was assessed by double immunofluorescence staining with JAG1/Notch1/Notch intracellular domain (NICD) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)/ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1)., Results: BHD treatments remarkably improved motor function of the MCAO rats by reducing steps, swing time and ataxia coefficient of the left forelimb. The MRI examinations found that BHD treatments significantly reduced infarct volume and preserved the motor cortex and external capsule integrity, as reflected by decreased T2 values, RD, and increased FA. Notably, the gait parameters of the left forelimb were correlated to the MRI index obtained from the perilesional motor cortex and external capsule to varying degrees. Furthermore, BHD treatments enhanced gray and matter remyelination by elevating the numbers of Olig2 + /Ki67 + , CNPase + /Ki67 + cells, and the integrated optical density of LFB. Finally, BHD effectively inhibited the activation of Notch signaling in the astrocytes and microglia of the corresponding gray and white matter, as evidenced by decreased numbers of cells co-expressing JAG1/Notch1/NICD and GFAP/Iba1., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that BHD treatment could promote poststroke motor recovery by preserving the structural integrity of the gray and white matter and facilitating their remyelination. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Astragaloside IV (AS), a key active ingredient obtained from Chinese herb Astragalus mongholicus Bunge, exerts potent neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects for treating neurodegenerative diseases. However, mechanisms of AS on improvement of ischemic brain tissue repair remain unclear., Aim of the Study: This research aims at using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to noninvasively determine whether AS facilitates brain tissue repair, and investigating whether AS exerts brain remodeling through adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) metabolic signaling regulating key glycolytic enzymes and energy transporters, thereby impacting microglia polarization., Materials and Methods: Ischemic stroke model in male Sprague-Dawley rats were induced through permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO). Infarct volume, the alterations of brain microstructure and nerve fibers reorganization were examined by multi-parametric MRI. The pathological damages of myelinated axons and microglia polarization surrounding infarct tissue were detected using pathological techniques. Furthermore, M1/M2 microglia polarization associated protein, glycolytic rate-limiting enzymes, energy transporters and AMPK/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signal were examined both in ischemic stroke rats and BV2 microglia treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) + interferon-γ (IFN-γ) by western blotting., Results: MRI revealed that AS obviously decreased infarct volume, relieved brain microstructure damage and improved nerve fibers reorganization in ischemic stroke rats. Histological tests supported MRI findings. Notably, AS promoted microglia M2 and reduced M1 polarization, induced the AMPK activation accompanied with decreased levels of phosphorylated mTOR and HIF-1α. Moreover, AS suppressed the expression of glycolytic rate-limiting enzymes and energy transporters in ischemic stroke rats and BV2 microglia. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD), one of the most commonly utilized traditional Chinese medicine prescription for treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke. However, the understanding of BYHWD on neurovascular repair following cerebral ischemia is so far limited., Aim of the Study: This research investigated the influence of BYHWD on neurovascular remodeling by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology and revealed the potential neurovascular repair mechanism underlying post-treatment with BYHWD after ischemic stroke., Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were utilized as an ischemic stroke model by permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO). BYHWD was intragastrically administrated once daily for 30 days straight. Multimodal MRI was performed to detect brain tissue injuries, axonal microstructural damages, cerebral blood flow and intracranial vessels on the 30th day after BYHWD treatment. Proangiogenic factors, axonal/synaptic plasticity-related factors, energy transporters and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signal pathway were evaluated using western blot. Double immunofluorescent staining and western blot were applied to evaluate astrocytes and microglia polarization., Results: Administration of BYHWD significantly alleviated infarct volume and brain tissue injuries and ameliorated microstructural damages, accompanied with improved axonal/synaptic plasticity-related factors, axonal growth guidance factors and decreased axonal growth inhibitors. Meanwhile, BYHWD remarkably improved cerebral blood flow, cerebral vascular signal and promoted the expression of proangiogenic factors. Particularly, treatment with BYHWD obviously suppressed astrocytes A1 and microglia M1 polarization accompanied with promoted astrocyte A2 and microglia M2 polarization. Furthermore, BYHWD effectively improved energy transporters. Production of flexible strain sensors is complex, time-consuming, and expensive. In this study, a novel fabrication method of polydimethylsiloxane/graphene nanocomposite conductive materials was proposed by using the scraping and coating method for manufacturing sandwich-shape flexible strain sensors. A ZQ-60B tensile testing machine was employed to test the mechanical properties of flexible sensors with 1%, 3%, and 5% graphene content. The results revealed that the stress and strain of the flexible strain sensor exhibited a linear relationship, and the linear correlation coefficients were 0.99706, 0.99819, and 0.99826, respectively. The concentration of graphene was 1%, 3%, and 5%, and the gauge factors (GFs) of the sensor were 24, 6, and 3, respectively. With the increase in the graphene content, the GF decreased gradually. This phenomenon could be attributed to tunneling, which increased the number of conductive pathways with an increase in the graphene content. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited excellent stability after 100 cycles of stretching/scaling. The finger joint bending test revealed that the flexible strain sensor is reproducible and exhibits excellent application prospects in monitoring human movement and health.

The aim of this study was to investigate the abnormities in functional connectivity (FC) within each modular network and between modular networks in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Twelve meaningful modular networks were identified via independent component analysis from 41 patients and 40 volunteers. Parametric tests were used to compare the intra- and intermodular FC between the groups. Partial correlation analysis was used to seek the relationships between abnormal FCs and the clinical data. Compared to the controls, SLE patients showed decreased intramodular FC in the anterior default mode network (aDMN), posterior default mode network (pDMN), ventral attention network (VAN), and sensorimotor network (SMN) and increased intramodular FC in the medial visual network (mVN) and left frontoparietal network. In addition, SLE patients showed decreased intermodular FC between the SMN and the lateral visual network (lVN), between the SMN and the VAN, and between the pDMN and the lVN and exhibited increased intermodular FC between the SMN and the salience network (SAN), between the pDMN and the SAN, and between the aDMN and the VAN. Moreover, we found several correlations among the abnormal FCs and the Mini-Mental State Examination in SLE patients. Mild cognitive impairment is compensated by the hyperconnectivity between the aDMN and the VAN, while severe cognitive impairment tends to be compensated by the hyperconnectivity between the SMN and the SAN. The FC value between the SMN and the SAN and between the aDMN and the VAN may serve as neuroimaging markers for monitoring cognitive progression in SLE patients., (© 2021. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theory approaches to investigate the topological characteristics of functional networks and their potential correlations with clinical information in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A total of 41 patients and 35 volunteers were consecutively recruited. Detailed clinical data of all participants were recorded. All participants underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging examination. Functional networks were constructed by a Pearson correlation matrix of 116 brain regions. The topological properties were analyzed by graph theory. Parametric tests were used to compare the topological properties between the groups. Partial correlation analysis was used to identify relationships between the abnormal topological properties and the clinical data. The nodal network metrics were abnormal in the SLE patients compared to the controls. Decreased nodal efficiency was identified in the right insula, bilateral putamen, and bilateral Heschl's gyrus in the SLE patients. Decreased degree centrality was also found in the right amygdala and bilateral Heschl's gyrus. In addition, the SLE patients showed decreased network functional connectivity (FC) between several regions, particularly between the basal ganglia and the cerebellum. Moreover, FC values between the right putamen and vermis 6 were positively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination scores. The nodal efficiency and the degree centrality values in the left Heschl's gyrus were both positively correlated with the course of the disease. The topological structure of the functional network was apparently abnormal in SLE patients. FC values between the right putamen and vermis 6 may serve as a neuroimaging marker for evaluating the progressive cognitive decline in SLE patients. Decreased synergy between the basal ganglia region and the cerebellum in the extrapyramidal system may be one cause of cognitive dysfunction in SLE patients.

The goal of this review was to summarize current biochemical mechanisms of and risk factors for diabetic brain injury. We mainly summarized mechanisms published in the past three years and focused on diabetes induced cognitive impairment, diabetes-linked Alzheimer's disease, and diabetic stroke. We think there is a need to conduct further studies with increased sample sizes and prolonged period of follow-ups to clarify the effect of DM on brain dysfunction. Additionally, we also think that enhancing experimental reproducibility using animal models in conjunction with application of advanced devices should be considered when new experiments are designed. Based on three manually excavated trenches (projection length of 21 m, width of 1 m) along a typical Karst hillslope, the changing trends for soil-bedrock structure, average water content of soil profile and soil-bedrock interface water content along each individual trench were studied. The effect of irregular bedrock topography on soil moisture distribution was discussed. The results showed that the surface topography was inconsistent with the bedrock topography in the Karst hill-slopes. The bedrock topography was highly irregular with a maximum variation coefficient of 82%. The distribution pattern of soil profile of moisture was significantly affected by the underlying undulant bedrock. The soil water content was related to slope position when the fluctuation was gentle, and displayed a linear increase from upslope to downslope. When the bedrock fluctuation increased, the downslope linear increasing trend for soil water content became unapparent, and the spatial continuity of soil moisture was weakened. The soil moisture was converged in rock dents and cracks. The average water content of soil profile was significantly positively correlated with the soil-bedrock interface water content, while the latter responded more sensitively to the bedrock fluctuation.

We propose a simple online learning algorithm especial for high-dimensional data. The algorithm is referred to as online sequential projection vector machine (OSPVM) which derives from projection vector machine and can learn from data in one-by-one or chunk-by-chunk mode. In OSPVM, data centering, dimension reduction, and neural network training are integrated seamlessly. In particular, the model parameters including (1) the projection vectors for dimension reduction, (2) the input weights, biases, and output weights, and (3) the number of hidden nodes can be updated simultaneously. Moreover, only one parameter, the number of hidden nodes, needs to be determined manually, and this makes it easy for use in real applications. Performance comparison was made on various high-dimensional classification problems for OSPVM against other fast online algorithms including budgeted stochastic gradient descent (BSGD) approach, adaptive multihyperplane machine (AMM), primal estimated subgradient solver (Pegasos), online sequential extreme learning machine (OSELM), and SVD + OSELM (feature selection based on SVD is performed before OSELM). The results obtained demonstrated the superior generalization performance and efficiency of the OSPVM.

Background: The NF-κB pathway and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (CCL5) are involved in pain modulation; however, the precise mechanisms of their interactions in chronic neuropathic pain have yet to be established., Methods: The present study examined the roles of spinal NF-κB and CCL5 in a neuropathic pain model after chronic constriction injury (CCI) surgery. CCI-induced pain facilitation was evaluated using the Plantar and von Frey tests. The changes in NF-κB and CCL5 expression were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analyses., Results: Spinal NF-κB and CCL5 expression increased after CCI surgery. Repeated intrathecal infusions of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC, a NF-κB inhibitor) decreased CCL5 expression, inhibited the activation of microglia and astrocytes, and attenuated CCI-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia. Intrathecal injection of a CCL5-neutralizing antibody attenuated CCI-induced pain facilitation and also suppressed spinal glial cell activation after CCI surgery. However, the CCL5-neutralizing antibody did not affect NF-κB expression. Furthermore, selective glial inhibitors, minocycline and fluorocitrate, attenuated the hyperalgesia induced by intrathecal CCL5., Conclusions: The inhibition of spinal CCL5 expression may provide a new method to prevent and treat nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain.

Objective: To explore the mechanism of tanshinol on alleviate the inflammatory injury of lung tissue in rat hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS)., Methods: SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group (n = 8), hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) group (n = 11) and tanshinol intervention group (n = 9). HE staining was used to observe the histopathology changes of pulmonary and hepatic tissues, and to count the number of macrophages in lung tissues. The activity of alanine transferase (ALT) and concentrations of endotoxin, tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-alpha) and homocystein (Hcy) in plasma were detected. The concentrations of TNF-alpha, nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the lung tissues were measured, respectively., Results: Thickened alveolar septum and increased macrophages were observed in lungs in HPS rat. After administered with tanshinol, the pulmonary pathological changes were alleviated and the number of macrophages in lung tissue was decreased compared with HPS group. The activity of ALT and the concentrations of endotoxin, TNF-alpha and Hcy in plasma ,and TNF-alpha, iNOS, NO and MDA in lung tissue in HPS group were higher than those of normal control group; meanwhile, those tanshinol group were less those that of HPS group., Conclusion: Tanshinol may play an important role in delaying the development of HPS through protecting liver or directly antagonizing the effect of intestinal endotoxemia so as to alleviate the inflammatory reaction in lung tissue.

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious and economically important disease of cloven-hoofed animals. RNA interference (RNAi) can be used as a rapid and specific antiviral approach. It was shown that treatment with recombinant adenovirus (Ad(VP1-2B)) carrying shRNAs targeted to the VP1 and 2B genes of FMDV expressed in tandem had marked antiviral effects against FMDV both in IBRS-2 cells and guinea pigs. Treatment with Ad(VP1-2B) both before and after FMDV infection was most effective in IBRS-2 cells, as the FMDV RNA transcripts could not be detected within 48 h post-challenge (hpc), and the viral RNA copy number at 72 hpc was only 0.02% of that in the positive control group. Delivery of Ad(VP1-2B) reduced significantly the susceptibility of guinea pigs to FMDV infection. All guinea pigs were protected within 3 days post challenge (dpc) when they were injected twice with the same dose of Ad(VP1-2B), and a third treatment with the same dose of Ad(VP1-2B) at 3 dpc was necessary to confer longer lasting protection (up to 6 dpc). In conclusion, application of such a adenovirus vector to inhibit more than one viral gene may be an advantageous method for prevention and therapy of FMDV infection., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The evolution of minimally invasive surgery has gradually lead to the stage of robotic surgery with unprecedented controllability and precision, little trauma, mild tenderness, rapid recovery, short hospitalization, cosmetic appearance, and prominent superiority. It is now extensively and gradually applied in general surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, urinary surgery, gynecology and obstetric surgery, orthopedic and ophthalmology surgery, etc. Since the introduction of surgical robots into China at the beginning of the 21(st) century, robotic surgery has been developing steadily.

It has been a long time since people recognized the word "Ma Zhui (anesthesia)" which was also recorded in the medical literature of past generations, for example: anesthesia powder, the magic prescription of toad powder of Huatuo, magic sleeping powder, 'knock-out' drops etc. In 1846, etherization was applied in clinic successfully, since then modern anesthesiology has had a process of more than 150 years during which the concept of the word "anesthesia" changed constantly. Reviewing the evolution of the origin and the concept of the word "anesthesia" can be of benefit to recognize and understand the concept and nature of "anesthesia" to improve clinical anesthesia.

We previously reported that inhibition of Rho-kinase (ROCK) by hydroxyl fasudil improves cognitive deficit and neuronal damage in rats with chronic cerebral ischemia (Huang et al., Cell Mol Neurobiol 28:757-768, 2008). In this study, fasudil mesylate (FM) was investigated for its neuroprotective potential in rats with ischemia following middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and reperfusion. The effect of fasudil mesylate was also studied in rat brain cortical and hippocampal slices treated with oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) injury. Gross anatomy showed that cerebral infarct size, measured with 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, was significantly smaller in the FM-treated than in the non-FM-treated ischemic rats. In the brain regions vulnerable to ischemia of ischemic rats, fasudil mesylate was also found to significantly restore the enzyme protein expression level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), which was decreased in ischemia. However, it remarkably reduced the protein synthesis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) that was induced by ischemia and reperfusion. In rat brain slices treated with OGD injury, fasudil mesylate increased the neuronal cell viability by 40% for cortex and by 61% for hippocampus, respectively. Finally, in the presence of OGD and fasudil mesylate, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was increased by 50% for cortex and by 58% for hippocampus, compared to OGD only group. In conclusion, our in vivo study showed that fasudil mesylate not only decreased neurological deficit but also reduced cerebral infarct size, possibly and at least partially by augmenting eNOS protein expression and inhibiting iNOS protein expression after ischemia-reperfusion.

The surgical field had put forward the concept of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in 1970' s of 20th century. This concept developed from the original sequential organ failure to multiple system organ failure, and then to multiple organ failure, at last to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Although this developmental process lasted for several decades, the concept of MODS still have many deficiencies and shortcomings until today and need to make further exploration and research.

Aims: The aim of this study was to compare different primers for rapid and effective detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)., Methods and Results: A total of four pairs of primers, three previously published and one based on a newly developed V. parahaemolyticus metalloprotease (vpm) gene, have been assayed for PCR detection of V. parahaemolyticus. They have been tested for specificity and sensitivity on a total of 101 strains including reference and environment isolates belonging to V. parahaemolyticus and other species in Vibrio. Of the four sets of primers tested, the one designed on the basis of the metalloprotease gene (675 bp) gave optimal results with bacterial strains examined as they only amplified the specific fragment in strains that had been genetically and biochemically assessed as V. parahaemolyticus and the limit of detection was 4 pg of purified target DNA., Conclusions: The primers designed on the metalloprotease gene gave optimal results for specific, sensitive and rapid detection of V. parahaemolyticus by PCR., Significance and Impact of the Study: PCR amplification with the optimal primer set VPM1/VPM2 could facilitate the rapid diagnosis and surveillance of potentially pathogenic strains of V. parahaemolyticus and reduce food-borne illness.

To investigate the morphology and hemodynamics of the early myocardial contusion, an animal model of cardiac contusion was established by impact to the precordial region at sternum at velocity of 10.0m/s with a mechanical elastic-cord propelled impactor in 19 dogs. The electrocardiogram and both the left and right intra-ventricular pressures were recorded continuously throughout the experiment. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of myoglobin, creatine kinase-MB and fibrinogen were conducted. At the moment of impact, abrupt over-pressures within the left and right ventricles occurred with concomitant serious arrhythmias followed by variety of cardiac conduction disorders and depressed left and right ventricular systolic pressures during the observation times. Histologically, lesions of myocardial contusions were identified at subepicardial, myocardial or subendocardial layer as interstitial hemorrhage, disruption or coagulative necrosis as well as contraction band necrosis of the muscle fibers, which might be categorized into the hemorrhagic, necrotized and mixed forms. The three forms of lesions were found to exist independently, or co-existed in a heart. However, severity of the lesions varied greatly with different parts even within a heart. Intravascular thromboses were occasionally discovered post-impact. Immunohistochemically, loss of myoglobin and creatine kinase-MB from cardiac cells, and accumulation of fibrinogen at the cell membranes were detected 5min post-impact. The intracellular accumulation of fibrinogen increased with extension of post-impact intervals. Our results indicate that diverse morphological lesions concomitant with hemodynamic compromise and serious, even fatal arrhythmias occur in the early myocardial contusion, and intravascular thromboses are occasionally produced, suggesting that traumatic myocardial ischemic lesion may be induced due to blunt impact to the precordial region.

Background & Objective: The incidence of lung cancer is high at Xuanwei, Yunnan Province, at where the mortality rate of this disease in women is the highest in China. This study was to establish a Xuanwei woman lung adenocarcinoma cell line, and provide an in vitro experimental model for the study of preventing and treating lung cancer., Methods: The cells derived from a surgical specimen of a woman patient with lung cancer were primarily cultured. The biological characteristics of the cell line were studied with light and electron microscopes, determination of doubling time and growth curve, culturing in soft agar, flow cytometry (FCM), chromosome and G-band detection, c-12 multiple tumor markers detection, and inoculation in mice., Results: Morphologic study, proliferation dynamics, and invasive growth showed that the cultured cells have malignant characteristics. Their chromosome numbers ranged from 55 to 69, with a mode number of 60-63. The tumor formation rate in mice was 100% after axillary transplantation of the cells; the morphology of the tumor cells was similar to that of the pathologic specimen of the patient. The cell line was named XWLC-05., Conclusion: According to the newest rules of establishing a cell line in vitro, XWLC-05 is proved to be a new cell line of human lung adenocarcinoma.

HLA-DRB1 typing by PCR-SSP technique was first used for paternity testing. The analysis of 42 paternity cases shows that this identification method is simple, fast and reliable and has high exclusion probability of paternity (66.3%). This method can also be applied to the study of transplantation, HLA associated disease and anthropogenesis.

The dog's precordial region at the sternum was impacted with a mechanical elastic-cord propelled impactor at the velocity of 8.0 m/s. The left and right intraventricular pressures and electrocardiogram (ECG) were monitored continuously for 60 min after the impact. The micro- and ultra-structure of myocardium were examined. Localization of myocardial myoglobin (Mb), creatine kinase BB (CK-BB) and creatine kinase MM (CK-MM) as well as plasma membrane permeability were studied by immunohistochemical and lanthanum probe techniques. Upon the impact, abrupt over-pressures within both ventricles were recorded with transient depression of the left ventricular systolic pressure. In all the dogs, some rhythm- and conduction-disorders were noted, which lasted transiently and resumed to normal sinus rhythm. At autopsy, no gross injuries of the heart were detected, and microscopic examination showed no visible myocardial lesions. However, immunohistochemically, focal patchy loss of myocardial Mb, CK-BB and CK-MM was identified with scattered deposition of these substances between myocardial fibers elsewhere. Such changes as relaxed myofibrils with widened I band, contracted myofibrils and broken cristae of the mitochondria were observed in myocardial ultrastructure. Lanthanum particles deposited inside the mitochondria. These results indicate that increase in cardiac cell membrane permeability and ultrastructural damage in myocardium may be involved even in cardiac concussion.

To detect early changes in neurons and astrocytes by immunohistochemical methods using antibodies against the neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament, glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), and S-100 protein, a fluid-percussion injury model in cats was chosen, in which a severe grade of injury (3.5-5.5 atm) was produced. Neuropathologic changes were produced through brain deformation by pressure gradients at the time of injury. The neuronal NSE immunoreactivity in the parietal cortex and the brain stem began to decrease at 1 to 2 hours after injury and were reduced markedly or even lost 4 hours after injury. Axons in the cerebral white matter and corpus callosum and in the hemorrhage regions at the brain stem were waved and enlarged <4 hours after injury. From 4 hours after injury, retraction balls were found after staining by antibody for the neurofilament. The GFAP-positive astrocytes appeared in the impact site in the parietal cortex and in the brain stem from 4 hours after injury, whereas S-100-positive astrocytes were not markedly changed, indicating that early after the injury, astrocytes manifested reactive hypertrophy without proliferation. These results suggest that immunochemical studies on NSE, neurofilament, GFAP, and S-100 are useful in pathologic and forensic practice in a patient who survives for a short time after a fatal head injury but without obvious focal damage.

A time-resolved fluorometric immunoassay for water-soluble H antigens of ABH blood group substances has been developed. Introducing artificial antigens (trisaccharide-albumin complexes for H type 1 and H type 2) as reference substances, H blood group substances in human saliva were measured. The monoclonal antibody, anti-H 1E3, reacted with both H type 1 and type 2 chains, and the commercially available anti-H reacted with H type 2 chain. Using these two antibodies we found 10-20-fold higher concentration of H type 1 compared with that of H type 2 in human saliva. The H type 2 was not found in the saliva samples from nonsecretors, irrespective of ABO phenotypes. The results suggest that approximately 90% of A and B blood group substances in human saliva are built on type 1 chains.

Sixty Chinese skulls (30 males and 30 females) from Liaoning Province of the People's Republic of China were used in this study. Forty-one variables on each skull were measured and one group of 14 and a second group of 5 variables were selected from all the variables by applying multiple stepwise regression on a computer. Discriminant equations for the 14 and 5 variables for sex diagnosis have been obtained and these variables are highly significant. The discriminant rate for the group of 5 variables resulted in accurate sex determination in 96.7% of cases. For the group of 14 variables there was 100% success rate.

Age estimation in unidentified bodies is inaccurate. Usually only a broad range of ages, such as 20-30 years or 30-50 years, can be given, especially when postmortem change has occurred. Thus there is a real need in routine forensic practice for greater accuracy. Takei (1970, 1981), looked at the relationship between teeth and age by using the 'Theory of Quantification'. Song and Jia (1987), extended the use of this technique, adding multiple stepwise regression analysis, to the statistical examination of data derived from the study of attrition of the occlusal surfaces of teeth. The computer model thus derived provides a basis for an accurate assessment of age from qualitative material. This paper discusses the technique and is based upon the findings made during a study of the degree of occlusal attrition in 880 people, living in rural and urban areas of the Liaoning province of the People's Republic of China.
