Abstract Background Previous studies have suggested a potential link between the crown-to-root ratio (CRR) and root morphology in patients with mild chronic periodontitis, which may be associated with tooth mobility. However, these findings have not been thoroughly investigated. Our previous study found that 76% of patients with aggressive periodontitis, particularly those with premolar involvement, exhibited abnormal root morphology, severe alveolar bone loss, and increased tooth mobility, leading to poor clinical outcomes. This study aims to investigate the specific correlations among alveolar bone resorption, root morphology, CRR, and periodontal clinical indicators with premolar mobility in stage III/IV grade C periodontitis patients aged ≤ 35 years. Materials and methods A total of 1,064 premolars from 151 stage III/IV grade C periodontitis patients aged ≤ 35 years were included in the study. Clinical periodontal parameters and radiographic measurements were recorded. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationships between these indicators and tooth mobility. Results Significant variations in premolar root lengths were observed, ranging from 6.80 mm to 20.96 mm. Teeth with shorter roots (mean length: 10.22 mm) exhibited grade I mobility with only 28% alveolar bone resorption, whereas those with medium-length (mean length: 12.67 mm) and longer roots (mean length: 14.91 mm) exhibited mobility at 34% and 37% bone resorption, respectively. The red coloring of pear fruits is mainly caused by anthocyanin accumulation. Red sport, represented by the green pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ (BL) and the red-skinned derivative ‘Max Red Bartlett’ (MRB), is an ideal material for studying the molecular mechanism of anthocyanin accumulation in pear. Genetic analysis has previously revealed a quantitative trait locus (QTL) associated with red skin color in MRB. However, the key gene in the QTL and the associated regulatory mechanism remain unknown. In the present study, transcriptomic and methylomic analyses were performed using pear skin for comparisons between BL and MRB. These analyses revealed differential PcHY5 DNA methylation levels between the two cultivars; MRB had lower PcHY5 methylation than BL during fruit development, and PcHY5 was more highly expressed in MRB than in BL. These results indicated that PcHY5 is involved in the variations in skin color between BL and MRB. We further used dual luciferase assays to verify that PcHY5 activates the promoters of the anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport genes PcUFGT, PcGST, PcMYB10 and PcMYB114, confirming that PcHY5 not only regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis but also anthocyanin transport. Furthermore, we analyzed a key differentially methylated site between MRB and BL, and found that it was located in an intronic region of PcHY5. The lower methylation levels in this PcHY5 intron in MRB were associated with red fruit color during development, whereas the higher methylation levels at the same site in BL were associated with green fruit color. Based on the differential expression and methylation patterns in PcHY5 and gene functional verification, we hypothesize that PcHY5, which is regulated by methylation levels, affects anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport to cause the variations in skin color between BL and MRB.

Recently, the shale gas exploration of Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in Sichuan Basin has made a great breakthrough. However, the pore characteristics and controlling factors of the shale-gas reservoir in the Qiongzhusi Formation are not clear, which hinders further exploration and development of shale gas. This paper focuses on the Qiongzhusi Formation in the Lower Cambrian of the Sichuan Basin. On the basis of mineral composition and the lithofacies types of shale-gas reservoirs in Qiongzhusi Formation were classified by microscopic observation. Additionally, focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM), advanced mineral identification and characterization system (AMICS) analysis, large-field stitching scanning electron microscope technology (MAPS) and nitrogen adsorption experiment were employed to comprehensively determine the differential characteristics and controlling factors of pore development. The results indicate that the pore types in Qiongzhusi Formation are mainly composed of interparticle pores and intercrystalline pores. The pore structure of Qiongzhusi Formation is complex. Significant differences in pore structure parameters are observed among different lithofacies. Quartz and feldspar contribute to the preservation of primary pores due to their strong compressive resistance. Clay minerals and carbonate minerals impede pore development by occluding pores. The influence of organic matter on the pore development is relatively small. According to the mineral composition and pore parameters, laminated shale is a relatively favorable reservoir facies among different lithofacies types.

With the development of the industry of semiconductor integrated circuits, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) products have made rapid progress. The development of MEMS and the combination of sensor technology have yielded compact sensors with increased functions and intelligence levels. MEMS-based microhotplate (MHP)-type metal oxide methane sensors have the advantages of low power consumption and fast response and have been widely used in methane detection applications. In particular, ZnO methane-sensitive materials have attracted significant attention due to their high sensitivity, small poisoning effect, and low operating temperature. Notably, the response performance of sensors prepared from these sensitive materials is still significantly affected by the heating temperature and thermal distribution of the MEMS-based MHP. The purpose of our experiment is to optimize the heat generation of the heating electrodes of MHP, optimize the thermal distribution of MHP, and further reduce the power consumption of MHP sensors. The heating electrodes of MHP are made of platinum materials that have high thermal conductivity and stable performance. In this study, we use the Multiphysics module in the finite element analysis software COMSOL to simulate and analyze the temperature in the physical field for the two structures of serpentine platinum heating electrodes of MHP. By comparison, the structure of the heating electrodes affects the temperature distribution under the same working conditions. The structure with a larger width in the middle of the heating plate electrode and gradually narrowing to both sides generates more heat than that with the same width. When the heating plate reaches 300 ℃, it needs about 75 mW of power. Next, ZnO thin film methane sensors were constructed by sputtering ZnO methane-sensitive materials on the interdigital electrode of a commercial MHP, and the response of the gas sensor was tested using the HIS9010 of Hefei Micro-Nano Company. The static measurement method was used to inject methane gas into a 1-L gas chamber. In order to verify the superior response of our sensor, it has been compared that performance of commercial methane sensors and ZnO methane sensors made by. The response linearity in the interval is relatively good, and the response value for 10000×10−6 methane reaches 30. The response of our fabricated sensor is higher than those of existing domestic and foreign commercial methane sensors, showing significant potential in related applications.

Early defoliation, which usually occurs during summer in pear trees, is gradually becoming a major problem that poses a serious threat to the pear industry in southern China. However, there is no system for evaluating the responses of different cultivars to early defoliation, and our knowledge of the potential molecular regulation of the genes underlying this phenomenon is still limited. In this study, we conducted field investigations of 155 pear accessions to assess their resistance or susceptibility to early defoliation. A total of 126 accessions were found to be susceptible to early defoliation, and only 29 accessions were resistant. Among them, 19 resistant accessions belong to the sand pear species (Pyrus pyrifolia). To identify the resistance genes related to early defoliation, the healthy and diseased samples of two sand pear accessions, namely, the resistant early defoliation accession ‘Whasan’ and the susceptible early defoliation accession ‘Cuiguan’, were used to perform RNA sequencing. Compared with ‘Cuiguan’, a total of 444 genes were uniquely differentially expressed in ‘Whasan’. Combined with GO and KEGG enrichment analyses, we found that early defoliation was closely related to the stress response. Furthermore, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis revealed a high correlation of WRKY and ethylene responsive factor (ERF) transcription factors with early defoliation resistance. This study provides useful resistant germplasm resources and new insights into potentially essential genes that respond to early defoliation in pears, which may facilitate a better understanding of the resistance mechanism and molecular breeding of resistant pear cultivars.

Dwarfism is an important trait which is closely related to the efficiency of fruit orchard management and production. However, dwarfing cannot be widely applied in the cultivation of pears, especially Asian pears. Developing varieties with dwarf characteristics is a goal of paramount importance in pear breeding. In the present study, dwarf phenotype pears (DPPs) and arborescent phenotype pears (APPs) were obtained from the offspring of a cross between ‘Aiyuxiang’ and ‘Cuiguan’ pear cultivars, which exhibited dwarfed and arborescent statures, respectively. When compared with APPs, the heights of DPPs showed a 62.8% reduction, and the internode lengths were significantly shorter. Cross-grafting between DPPs and APPs demonstrated that the dwarfed phenotype of DPPs was primarily induced by the aerial portions of the plant, and independent of the root system. Observations of stem tissue sections showed that DPP cells were arranged chaotically with irregular shapes, and the average length was larger than that of the APP cells. A total of 1 401 differently expressed genes (DEGs) in shoot apices between DPPs and APPs were identified by RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq), and these DEGs were mainly enriched in the ‘phytohormone-related pathways, cell wall metabolism and cell division’ categories. Moreover, 101 DEGs were identified as transcription factors (TFs). In DPPs, several brassinosteroids (BR) signaling and cell cycle-related genes were significantly down-regulated, while genes involved in BR and GA degradation were up-regulated. Comprehensive analysis of RNA-Seq data and stem tissue sections suggested that the dwarfed phenotype of DPPs could be primarily attributed to deficiencies in cell division. Previous work using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers narrowed the location of the gene responsible for the dwarf phenotype of ‘Le Nain Vert’. Through combined analysis of our transcriptomic data with the SSR results, we identified four genes as promising candidates for the dwarf phenotype, among which, a DELLA gene could be the most promising. The results presented in this study provide a sound foundation for further exploration into the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying pear dwarfing.

Abstract Quantum theory does not prevent entanglement from being created and observed in macroscopic physical systems, in reality however, the accessible scale of entanglement is still very limited due to decoherence effects. Recently, entanglement has been observed among atoms from thousands to millions levels in extremely low-temperature and well isolated systems. Here, we create multipartite entanglement of billions of motional atoms in a quantum memory at room temperature and certify the genuine entanglement via M-separability witness associated with photon statistics. The information contained in a single photon is found strongly correlated with the excitation shared by the motional atoms, which intrinsically address the large system and therefore stimulate the multipartite entanglement. Remarkably, our heralded and quantum memory built-in entanglement generation allows us to directly observe the dynamic evolution of entanglement depth and further to reveal the effects of decoherence. Our results verify the existence of genuine multipartite entanglement among billions of motional atoms at ambient conditions, significantly extending the boundary of the accessible scale of entanglement.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of adding Pennisetum purpureum (P. purpureum, also known as Napier grass or elephant grass) to the diets of late gestation on the antioxidant indexes, immune indexes and faecal microbiota of sows. At the 90 days of gestation, 300 healthy sows were randomly divided into three groups, and they received the basic commercial diet or added 5% P. purpureum and 10% P. purpureum, respectively. The experiment started from 90 days of gestation to parturition. Neuropathic pain (NP), caused by an injury or a disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system of the central and peripheral nervous systems, has become a global health concern. Recent studies have demonstrated that epigenetic mechanisms are among those that underlie NP; thus, elucidating the molecular mechanism of DNA methylation is crucial to discovering new therapeutic methods for NP. In this review, we first briefly discuss DNA methylation, demethylation, and the associated key enzymes, such as methylases and demethylases. We then discuss the relationship between NP and DNA methylation, focusing on DNA methyltransferases including methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) family proteins and ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes. Based on experimental results of neuralgia in animal models, the mechanism of DNA methylation-related neuralgia is summarized, and useful targets for early drug intervention in NP are discussed.

The content of stone cells is an important factor for pear breeding as a high content indicates severely reduced fruit quality in terms of fruit taste. Although the frozen-HCl method is currently a common method used to evaluate stone cell content in pears, it is limited in incomplete separation of stone cell and pulp and is time consuming and complicated. Computer-aided research is a promising strategy in modern scientific research for phenotypic data collection and is increasingly used in studying crops. Thus far, we lack a quantitative tool that can effectively determine stone cell content in pear fruit. We developed a program, Pearprocess, based on an imaging protocol using computer vision and image processing algorithms applied to digital images. Using photos of hand-cut sections of pear fruit stained with phloroglucin-HCl (Wiesner's reagent), Pearprocess can extract and analyze image-based data to quantify the stone cell-related traits measured in this study: number, size, area and density of stone cell. We quantified these traits for 395 pear accessions by Pearprocess and revealed large variation in different pear varieties and species. The number of stone cells varied greatly from value of 138 to 2 866, the density of stone cells ranged from 0.0019 to 0.0632 cm2 cm−2, the distribution of stone cell area ranged from 0.06 to 2.02 cm2 and the stone cell size was between 2e-4 and 1e-3 cm2. Moreover, trait data were correlated with fruit taste data. We found that stone cell density is likely the most important factor affecting the taste of pear fruit. In summary, Pearprocess is a new cost-effective web-application for semi-automated quantification of two-dimensional phenotypic traits from digital imagery using an easy imaging protocol. This simpler, feasible and accurate method to evaluate stone cell traits of fruit is a promising new tool for use in evaluating future germplasms for crop breeding programs.

ABSTRACT: Background: Assisted partner notification (PN) is an effective approach for increasing HIV testing among heterosexual partners. There is sparse evidence on its effect among sexual partners of men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the effect of assisted PN and passive PN interventions on uptake of HIV testing among male and female sexual partners of newly HIV-diagnosed MSM. In the passive PN group, participants were encouraged to disclose their HIV status and refer and persuade sexual partners to access HIV testing services (HTS). In the assisted PN group, participants were further provided with HIV self-testing kits for sexual partners to take a test at home or allow a community health worker from MSM-serving community-based organization (CBO) to anonymously refer and persuade their sexual partners to access HTS. The primary outcome was the proportion of index cases who had any sexual partner accessing HTS within four months after randomization. This trial is registered with chictr.org.cn, ChiCTR1800017813. Findings: Between August 2017 and January 2019, 187 MSM newly diagnosed with HIV in a large city Shenyang in northern China were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to either passive PN (n=90) or assisted PN (n=97) study groups. The proportion of index cases who disclosed their HIV status to any sexual partners within three months of randomization was similar between passive PN (57%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 46-67%) and assisted PN groups (58%, 95% CI: 48-68%). During four months of follow-up, the number of sexual partners named, referred to HTS, tested and testing positive per index case was 3•2, 0•7, 0•2 and 0•03 in the passive PN group, and 4•0, 1•0, 0•5 and 0•10 in the assisted PN group. Thirty-five percent of index cases in the assisted PN group had any sexual partners accessing HIV testing compared to 17% in the passive PN group (P = 0•004); 49% sexual partners who were disclosed by index cases in the assisted PN group had access HTS compared to 28% in the passive PN group (P = 0•007). Interpretation: The assisted PN strategy incorporating HIV self-testing and CBO outreach can increase uptake of HIV testing among sexual partners of MSM who were recently diagnosed with HIV. Abstract GLP-1 synergizes with glucose in regulating pancreatic β-cell function, including facilitating β-cell survival and insulin secretion. Though it has been widely accepted that phosphorylation is extremely important in regulating β-cell functions, our knowledge to the global mechanism is still limited. Here we performed a quantitative phosphoproteomics study to systematically present the synergistic regulation of INS-1E cell phosphoproteome mediated by glucose and GLP-1. We generated the largest pancreatic β-cell phosphoproteome by identifying 25,327 accurately localized phosphorylation sites on 5,389 proteins. Our results discovered several novel kinases regulated by glucose, GLP-1 or their synergism, and some of these kinases might act as downstream molecules of GLP-1 mediated PKA signaling cascade. A few phosphosites were regulated by both GLP-1 and glucose alone, and these target proteins were highly related to their biological function on pancreatic β-cells. Finally, we found glucose and GLP-1 executed their synergistic effect at multiple levels, especially at pathway level. Both GLP-1 and glucose participated in regulating every single step of the secretion pathway, and systematically synergized their effects in inducing insulin secretion.

The effect of annealing process on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg/Al composite plates fabricated by cast-rolling was investigated in this study. The results show that the interfacial transition zone can be divided into three regions: a Mg transition region, an Al transition region, and an intermediate region, respectively. The microhardness of the interfacial transition zone is higher than that of AZ31B and A356.When the annealing temperature is 250 ºC, the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions required for the formation of new intermetallic compounds have been met. While, for an annealing temperature at, or above, 300 ºC, the width of the interfacial transition zone, annealing temperature, and time follow model: ∆ X 2 = 2 . 07 × 10 4 exp − 60407 RT t − 11 . 54 exp 21211 RT. The shear strength reaches a maximum value of 116 MPa when the annealing temperature is 200 ºC. Cleavage fracture occurs at the side of the AZ31B alloy and quasi-cleavage fracture at the side of the A356 alloy.

A pair of cobalt(II)-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), [Co(pca)2(bmimb)]n (1) and [Co2(pca)4(bimb)2] (2), where Hpca = p-chlorobenzoic acid, bmimb = 1,3-bis((2-methylimidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, and bimb = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized through infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental and thermal analysis (EA), power X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. X-ray diffraction structural analysis revealed that 1 has a one-dimensional (1D) infinite chain network through the deprotonated pca− monodentate chelation and with a μ2-bmimb bridge Co(II) atom, and 2 is a binuclear Co(II) complex construction with a pair of symmetry-related pca− and bimb ligands. For both 1 and 2, each cobalt atom has four coordinated twisted tetrahedral configurations with a N2O2 donor set. Then, 1 and 2 are further extended into three-dimensional (3D) or two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks through C–H···Cl interactions. Topologically, HOFs 1 and 2 can be simplified as a 4-connected qtz topology with a Schläfli symbol {64·82} and a 4-connected sql topology with a Schläfli symbol {44·62}, respectively. The fluorescent sensing application of 1 was investigated; 1 exhibits high sensitivity recognition for Fe3+ (Ksv: 10970 M−1 and detection limit: 19 μM) and Cr2O72− (Ksv: 12960 M−1 and detection limit: 20 μM). This work provides a feasible detection platform of HOFs for highly sensitive discrimination of Fe3+ and Cr2O72− in aqueous media.

Understanding how infected cells respond to Ebola virus (EBOV) and how this response changes during the process of viral replication and transcription are very important for establishing effective antiviral strategies. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide screen to identify long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), micro RNAs (miRNAs), and mRNAs differentially expressed during replication and transcription using a tetracistronic transcription and replication-competent virus-like particle (trVLP) system that models the life cycle of EBOV in 293T cells. To characterize the expression patterns of these differentially expressed RNAs, we performed a series cluster analysis, and up- or down-regulated genes were selected to establish a gene co-expression network. Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks based on the RNAs responsible for the effects induced by EBOV replication and transcription in human cells, including circRNAs, lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs, were constructed for the first time. Based on these networks, the interaction details of circRNA-chr19 were explored. Our results demonstrated that circRNA-chr19 targeting miR-30b-3p regulated CLDN18 expression by functioning as a ceRNA. These findings may have important implications for further studies of the mechanisms of EBOV replication and transcription. These RNAs potentially have important functions and may be promising targets for EBOV therapy.

The molecular structure is stabilized by an intramolecular O—H...N hydrogen bond. In the crystal, N—H...O and weak N—H...Cl hydrogen bonds link the molecules into a three-dimensional architecture. In addition, there are weak C—H...π stacking interactions.

In the title compound, [Fe4(C6H12N2S4)(C18H15P)2(CO)10], the unit cell contains one molecule, which exhibits a crystallographically imposed center of symmetry. The independent Fe2S2 fragment [Fe—Fe = 2.527 (1) Å] is in a butterfly conformation, and each Fe atom displays a pseudo-square-pyramidal coordination geometry. The phosphane group occupies an apical position [Fe—P = 2.2670 (14) Å]. In the crystal, weak intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into chains along [110].

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C19H18N4O2·0.25H2O, contains two organic molecules and a solvent water molecule with 50% occupancy. The two molecules differ in their conformations: in one molecule it is (+)gauche-trans-trans-(+)gauche-trans, whereas in the other it is (−)gauche-trans-trans-(−)gauche-trans. The dihedral angles between the pyridine ring and the quinoline ring system are 67.4 (3) and 68.0 (2)°. Molecules are linked into a supramolecular two-dimensional array via N—H...N hydrogen bonds, with each partially occupied water molecule connected via an O—H...O hydrogen bond. C—H...O interactions are also present.

The crystal structure of the title compound, C28H18O2, was originally determined by Ehrenberg [(1967). Acta Cryst. 22, 482–487] using intensity data obtained from Weissenberg photographs. The current determination provides a crystal and molecular structure with a significantly higher precision and presents standard uncertainties on geometric parameters which are not available from the original work. The molecule lies on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis which bisects the C—C bond [1.603 (3) Å] which joins the two anthracen-9(10H)-one units.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C7H8N2O, molecules are connected via intermolecular N—H...O and O—H...N hydrogen bonds to form a two-dimensional supramolecular structure. The oxime group has an E configuration and the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzene ring and the amidoxime grouping is 20.2 (3)°.

In the title molecule, C15H11N5O, the 1,2,3-benzotriazole and 3-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole units are individually essentially planar and the dihedral angle between them is 80.2 (2)°. In the crystal structure, molecules are connected via weak intermolecular C—H...N hydrogen bonds to form two-dimensional sheets.

Background: Although evidence suggests that perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are positively correlated to several disease risks, no studies have proven if plasma PFASs are related to ovarian cancer survival. Objective: To explore the association between plasma PFASs and high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) overall survival (OS) in the population who did not smoke. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study within the Ovarian Cancer Follow-Up Study, matching 159 dead patients and 159 survival ones based on body mass index, sample date, and age at diagnosis. Nine plasma PFASs were extracted by solid phase extraction and measured using a liquid chromatography system coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Baseline plasma concentrations of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) [perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA)] and perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSAs) [perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)] were calculated. Odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated via conditional logistic regression models. To elucidate the combined effects, Bayesian kernel machine (BKMR), and regression quantile g-computation (QGC) models were utilized. Result: In full-adjusted model, significant differences were observed between HGSOC survival and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid, PFHpA, PFHxS, PFOS, PFCA, and PFSA. ORs and 95 %CIs were 2.74 (1.41–5.31), 1.97 (1.03–3.76), 2.13 (1.15–3.95), 2.28 (1.16–4.47), 3.74 (1.78–7.85), and 2.56 (1.31–5.01), respectively for the highest tertile compared with the lowest tertile. The QGC and BKMR models indicated that elevated concentrations of PFAS mixtures were associated with poor OS in HGSOC. Conclusions: Both individual and mixed plasma PFASs may relate to poor OS of HGSOC. Further research is necessary to establish causality, and it is recommended to reinforce environmental risk mitigation strategies to minimize PFAS exposure.

Abstract Background Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been hailed as a rich source of medicine, but many types of herbs and their functions still need to be rapidly discovered and elucidated. HerboChip, a target-based drug screening platform, is an array of different fractions deriving from herbal extracts. This study was designed to identify effective components from TCM that interact with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as a target using HerboChip. Methods Selected TCMs that are traditionally used as remedies for cancer prevention and wound healing were determined and extracted with 50% ethanol. Biotinylated-VEGF was hybridized with over 500 chips coated with different HPLC-separated fractions from TCM extracts and straptavidin-Cy5 was applied to identify plant extracts containing VEGF-binding fractions. Cytotoxicity of selected herbal extracts and their activities on VEGF-mediated angiogenic functions were evaluated. Results Over 500 chips were screened within a week, and ten positive hits were identified. The interaction of the identified herbal extracts with VEGF was confirmed in cultured endothelial cells. The identified herbs promoted or inhibited VEGF-mediated cell proliferation, migration and tube formation. Results from western blotting analysis demonstrated the identified herbal extracts significantly affected VEGF-triggered phosphorylations of eNOS, Akt and Erk. Five TCMs demonstrated potentiating activities on the VEGF response and five TCMs revealed suppressive activities. Conclusions The current results demonstrated the applicability of the HerboChip platform and systematically elucidated the activity of selected TCMs on angiogenesis and its related signal transduction mechanisms.
