Abstract The groove density mismatching of compression gratings, an often-neglected key issue, can induce significant spatiotemporal aberrations especially for super-intense femtosecond lasers. We mainly investigate the angular chirp and the consequent degradation of the effective focused intensity introduced by the groove density mismatching of compression gratings in ultra-intense femtosecond lasers. The results indicate that the tolerances of grating groove density mismatching will rapidly decrease with the beam aperture or spectral bandwidth increases. For our 100PW laser under construction, the grating groove density mismatching should be as small as 0.001 gr/mm if the drop of effective focused intensity has to be controlled below 15%. More importantly, new angular chirp compensation schemes are proposed for both double-grating and four-grating compressors. This work reveals the importance of groove density matching of compression gratings, and can provide helpful guidelines for the design of ultra-intense femtosecond lasers.

Abstract The receiving‐end system AC fault of the line‐commutated‐converter‐based high voltage direct current (LCC‐HVDC) will lead to commutation failure of the inverter side. During the fault and its recovery, AC transient low voltage and transient overvoltage (TOV) will occur in the sending‐end system. The TOV has the risk of triggering the disorderly off‐grid of the nearby renewable power generations. Besides, in a serious situation, it will threaten the power system to maintain a secure and steady operation. Therefore, the authors analyse the mechanism involved in the AC transient voltage during the AC fault and the recovery period first. It reveals that the key factor causing the TOV of the sending‐end system is the setting of the DC current reference value. Then, a DC current reference value limit method based on the AC TOV sampling value is proposed, which is used to accelerate DC current recovery and suppress the TOV of the sending‐end system. Finally, the effectiveness of the designed control method has been confirmed through electromagnetic transient simulations using the CIGRE HVDC benchmark model and a ±800 kV HVDC transmission system model situated in Northwest China.

With the wide application of power electronized resources (PERs), the amplitude and frequency of voltages show significant time-varying characteristics under asymmetrical faults. As a result, the traditional phasor model, impedance model, and symmetrical components method based on the constant amplitude and frequency of voltages are facing great challenges. Hence, a novel asymmetrical fault analysis method based on conjugate vectors is proposed in this paper which can meet the modeling and analysis requirements of the network excited by voltages with time-varying amplitude/frequency. Furthermore, asymmetrical fault characteristics are extracted. As an application, a faulted phase identification (FPI) strategy is proposed based on the fault characteristics. The correctness and superiority of the asymmetrical fault analysis method and FPI strategy are verified in time-domain simulations and a real-time digital simulator.

With the increasing challenges posed by line-commutated converter-based high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) in the era of widespread renewable energy utilization, AC/DC dynamic interaction problems under controller regulations appeared more often. However traditional approaches often fall short in identifying the features of signals involved in AC/DC conversion in grid dynamics, and the characteristics of the conversion process in the LCC main circuit are overlooked. Consequently, this paper aims to fill this gap to help reveal the mechanism of grid dynamic problems dominated by controller regulations. Based on the recognition that the amplitude/frequency of AC electrical variables has time-varying characteristics in practice during grid dynamics, this paper focuses on the conversion mechanism between AC and DC electrical variables and then the basic features of electrical variables in LCC main circuits during grid dynamics are expressed using time-varying amplitude/frequency rotating vectors. First, the six-pulse firing pattern is expressed using the rotating vector with time-varying frequency. Then the time-varying amplitude/frequency rotating vectors are utilized to discuss how AC/DC voltage and current converse, including the power produced from them during grid dynamics. Moreover, simulations are performed to validate the efficacy of the mechanism, alongside elucidating its potential applications to benefit grid dynamic analysis. Finally, the salient contributions of this proposed framework are clarified.

The modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are popularly used in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. However, for the direct modulation based MMC, its complex internal dynamics and the interaction with the grid impedance would induce the frequency coupling effect, which may lead to instability issues, especially in the case of weak grid. To effectively suppress the sub- and super-synchronous oscillations, this paper proposes a linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) based MMC control strategy. The LADRC mainly consists of the linear extended state observer (LESO) and the linear state error feedback (LSEF). And it is a potential method to enhance the system stability margin, attributing to its high anti-interference capability and good tracking performance. Thereupon, the system small-signal impedance model considering frequency coupling is established. And the effect of the introduction of the LADRC on the system stability is further investigated using the Nyquist criterion. Particularly, the influences of key control parameters on the stability are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the impact of LADRC on the transient performance is explored through closed-loop zero poles. Finally, the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are verified via electromagnetic simulations.

In quest of achieving compact and economic PW-level Ti:Sapphire (Ti:sa) lasers with a sub-15 fs pulse duration, a modified hybrid amplification scheme, which combines the optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) and the chirped pulse amplifier (CPA), is presented and numerically investigated in this paper. The key characteristic of this scheme is that the conventional Ti:sa regenerative amplifier and preamplifier are replaced by a dual-crystal OPCPA front-end, which is spectrally matched with the upstream seed source and the downstream Ti:sa amplifiers and, therefore, can realize a broader spectrum. Moreover, some useful laser techniques are also applied to suppress the spectral gain narrowing and redshift in the Ti:sa CPA chain and to control the residual dispersion in the laser system. This way, fewer amplification stages and pump lasers are required to reach PW-level peak power compared with traditional all-CPA Ti:sa lasers. Numerical results indicate that pulse energy and spectral bandwidth can reach up to ∼22 J and ∼125 nm at full width at half maximum (FWHM), respectively, only by employing three-stage amplifiers. After compression, PW-level lasers with a ∼13.3 fs pulse duration are expected. This work can offer a promising route for the development of compact and economic PW-level Ti:sa lasers.

Abstract In a modular multilevel converter‐based high‐voltage direct current (MMC‐HVDC) system, the dc fault ride through (FRT) control is an effective way to deal with a dc‐side pole‐to‐ground (PTG) fault. However, the setting of FRT duration brings potential hazards: 1) MMC will face the risk of “secondary short circuit” if FRT duration is short; 2) ac grid may have power angle stability issue if FRT duration is long. To avoid these hazards and provide theoretical guidance for the FRT duration setting, transient behaviour of dc fault current during the PTG FRT stage is explored in this work. Firstly, challenges of the transient analysis are summarised as non‐linearity and high‐order issues. In light of this, numerical and Hilbert‐Huang Transformation methods are introduced to evaluate the non‐linearity issue. It is found that the path of MMC from dc current to dc internal voltage is weakly non‐linear. Hence, a linear transient model is built to analyse the dc fault current. By participation factor analysis, the order of the proposed model is further reduced, so that an analytical expression of the dc fault current is approximately derived. Based on the analytical expression, regularities and mechanism of dc fault current are fully revealed. Application of the transient analysis to the setting of FRT duration is elaborated in detail. Finally, the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation verifies the validity of the proposed model and analytical expression.

Actinidia arguta leaves (AAL) are an excellent source of bioactive components for the food industry and possess many functional properties. However, the hypoglycemic effect and mechanism of AAL remain unclear. The aim of this work was to investigate the potential hypoglycemic effect of AAL and explore its possible mechanism using 16S rRNA sequencing and serum metabolomics in diabetic mice induced by high-fat feeding in combination with streptozotocin injection. A total of 25 flavonoids from AAL were isolated and characterized, and the contents of the extract from the AAL ranged from 0.14 mg/g DW to 8.97 mg/g DW. The compound quercetin (2) had the highest content of 8.97 ± 0.09 mg/g DW, and the compound kaempferol-3-O-(2′-O-D-glucopyl)-β-D-rutinoside (12) had the lowest content of 0.14 ± 0.01 mg/g DW. In vivo experimental studies showed that AAL reduced blood glucose and cholesterol levels, improved insulin sensitivity, and ameliorated oxidative stress and liver and kidney pathological damage. In addition, gut microbiota analysis found that AAL significantly reduced the F/B ratio, enriched the beneficial bacteria Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium, and inhibited the harmful bacteria Lactobacillus and Desulfovibrio, thereby playing an active role in intestinal imbalance. In addition, metabolomics analysis showed that AAL could improve amino acid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism, thereby exerting a hypoglycemic effect. This study confirmed that AAL can alleviate type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by regulating intestinal flora and interfering with related metabolic pathways, providing a scientific basis for its use as a dietary supplement and for further exploration of the mechanism of AAL against T2DM.

The doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is considered to provide a low-reactance path in the negative-sequence system and naturally comply with requirements on the negative-sequence reactive current in emerging grid codes. This paper shows otherwise and how the control strategy of converters plays a key role in the formation of the active and reactive current components. After investigating the existing control strategies from the perspective of grid code compliance and showing how they fail in addressing emerging requirements on the negative-sequence reactive current, we propose a new coordinated control strategy that complies with reactive current requirements in grid codes in the positive- and negative-sequence systems. The proposed method fully takes advantage of the current and voltage capacities of both the rotor-side converter (RSC) and grid-side converter (GSC), which enables the grid code compliance of the DFIG under unbalanced three-phase voltages due to asymmetrical faults. The mathematical investigations and proposed strategy are validated with detailed simulation models using the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) benchmark system. The derived mathematical expressions provide analytical clarifications on the response of the DFIG in the negative-sequence system from the grid perspective.

With the increase of converter-based renewable energy generation connected into the power grid, the interaction between renewable energy and grid impedance has introduced lots of new issues, among which the sub- and super-synchronous oscillation phenomenon makes a big concern. The linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is a potential way to improve the damping characteristics of the grid-connected system, but the key factors and influencing mechanism on system stability are unknown. This paper establishes the equivalent impedance and coupling admittance models of a typical three-phase grid-connected converter. Then, the influence of the key factors such as the bandwidth of the LADRC and grid impedance on the stability and frequency coupling effect is assessed in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis results are verified by simulations and experiments.

Nowadays, the stability issue of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines tied into weak AC power grid has attracted more and more attention. To analyze the stability of such cascade system, it is a common way to establish the small-signal model of the whole system. Although there have been various modeling methods, few of them can be easily utilized in practice due to the high order of the presented models. To address this issue, this paper simplifies the fast time scale subsystems and proposes a reduced-order state space model of the DFIG system based on electromechanical time scale, considering the rotor current controller (RCC), the phase-locked loop (PLL), the remained value of the grid voltage, and the impedance of the weak AC grid as well. Based on the simplified model, the stability of the wind turbine during weak AC grid voltage dips can be easily analyzed. The correctness of the integrated model and its convenience for stability analysis have been proved by eigenvalue matching method and computer simulations.

Nowadays, grid codes of various countries have required that grid-connected wind turbines should possess the capability of negative sequence current control during asymmetrical grid condition. As for type-4 wind turbines, however, due to the existence of the negative sequence voltage, the interaction between the dc-link voltage control (DVC) and phase locked loop (PLL) of the grid-side converter is likely to cause small-signal instability when the impedance of the AC grid cannot be ignored. As a specific contribution, the paper establishes a detailed four degree-of-freedom mass–spring–damper model considering the couplings between the positive and negative sequence subsystems based on the theory of mechanical vibration, so as to characterize the modal interaction between the DVC and PLL. The model can be used to evaluate the influence of factors such as negative sequence voltage, grid impedance and control parameters on the system stability. Simulation studies were finally performed to verify the correctness of the proposed model and the analysis.

Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines have been found to be very sensitive to asymmetrical grid fault, wherein the harmful oscillations in the electromagnetic torque has being made a big concern. What makes things harder is that latest grid codes require grid-connected wind turbines to possess the ability of positive- and negative-sequence reactive current supporting. Hence, it becomes a guide mechanism to meet the grid codes and to ensure the operation safety of the wind turbines. Even though a tradeoff could be made between them, it is still quite difficult to coordinate the current dispatch of the DFIG's rotor- and grid-side converters (RSC and GSC), since there are totally eight currents needing to be carefully designed, i.e., the positive- and negative-sequence active and reactive currents in each converter. To address this issue, this article analyzes the reactive current constraints in detail, based on which a coordinated reactive current control strategy is put forward for the DFIG-based wind turbines during asymmetrical grid condition. Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Pole-to-ground (PTG) fault analysis is of vital importance for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid. However, many factors are not considered in the existing studies such as the asymmetrical property of PTG fault, the coupling issue between DC transmission lines and the complexity of the structure of DC grid. This paper presents a PTG fault analysis method, which is based on common- and differential-mode (CDM) transformation. Similar to the symmetrical component method in AC system, the transformation decomposes the HVDC grid into CDM networks, which is balanced and decoupled. Then, a transfer impedance is defined and calculated based on the impedance matrices of the CDM networks. With the transfer impedance, analytical expressions of fault characteristics that vary with space and time are obtained. The proposed PTG fault analysis method is applicable to arbitrary HVDC grid topologies, and provides a new perspective to understand the fault mechanism. Moreover, the analytical expressions offer theoretical guidance for PTG fault protection. The validity of the proposed PTG fault analysis method is verified in comparison with the simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC.

In recent years, the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources represented by wind power and the widespread application of power electronic devices in power systems have led to the emergence of multi-frequency oscillation problems covering multiple frequency segments, which seriously threaten system stability and restrict the accommodation of renewable energy. The oscillation problems related to renewable energy integration have become one of the most popular topics in the field of wind power integration and power system stability research. It has received extensive attention from both academia and industries with many promising research results achieved to date. This paper first analyzes several typical multi-frequency oscillation events caused by large-scale wind power integration in domestic and foreign projects, then studies the multi-frequency oscillation problems, including wind turbine's shafting torsional oscillation, sub/super-synchronous oscillation and high frequency resonance. The state of the art is systematically summarized from the aspects of oscillation mechanism, analysis methods and mitigation measures, and the future research directions are explored.

The focusing quality of high peak power lasers plays a crucial role in laser wakefield electron acceleration investigations. We report here an improvement in the focusing quality of the SULF-1PW laser beamline, planning to drive and generate 5~10 GeV electron beams. After the wavefront correction in vacuum with an adaptive optical system and the focusing with an f/56 off-axis parabolic mirror, near-diffraction-limited focal spots with a size of 52 × 54 μm2 at full width at half maximum are achieved, and the enclosed energy inside this size is ~36.6%. Consequently, the focused intensity of ~1.66 × 1019 W/cm2 can be achieved at 1 PW peak power. Moreover, we also examine the wavefront stability in air and vacuum, respectively. From the statistical analysis of 1900 shots of successive laser pulses at 1 Hz, we identify the wavefront fluctuation resulting from air turbulence and the better correction capacity in vacuum. This work demonstrates the importance and necessity of wavefront correction in vacuum for high peak power lasers.

The picosecond optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (ps-OPCPA) with double BBO arrangement can support the ultrabroad spectrum even under a relatively long pump pulse duration (∼100 ps). In this work, five-wave-coupled equations taking into consideration different phase matching conditions between the parametric superfluorescence (PSF) and the signal are proposed to investigate the temporal contrast in ps-OPCPA schemes. Both the temporal contrast and the amplified spectrum are numerically analyzed in double BBO arrangements with four phase matching conditions. Numerical results show that the high temporal contrast and ultrabroad spectrum can be simultaneously realized by choosing the proper phase matching geometry in a double BBO arrangement. The numerical investigation here relaxes the requirement of very short pump pulses in ps-OPCPA, which can provide beneficial guidance for the design and construction of ps-OPCPA.

Abstract This paper presents an improved virtual synchronous control (VSynC) for the grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC) so as to continuously operate under the grid voltage with steady unbalance. The improved VSynC introduces the negative sequence power controls on basis of conventional VSynC. The improved VSynC is capable of regulating the negative sequence internal voltage to reduce the negative-sequence injected currents and oscillated powers of the VSC aroused by the negative-sequence grid voltage. Three alternative local control objectives for the VSC itself under steady state unbalanced grid conditions and their corresponding power references are deduced and computed. Simulated and experimental results are presented to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed improved VSynC to enhance the continuous operation performance of VSynC-based VSCs during grid voltage steady-state unbalance.

Reducing the power loss and handling short-circuit faults in HVDC systems are crucial for economical and reliable operation of modular multilevel converters (MMC). This paper proposes a loss reduction method for AC voltage-boosted FBSM-MMC by controlling the second harmonic component in the circulating current. The relationship between converter loss and second harmonic circulating current (SHCC) is first derived for AC voltage-boosted FBSM-MMC. From the analysis, it can be seen that the converter loss can be reduced by injecting the optimal SHCC into the arm current. The topology comparison between traditional FBSM-MMC and AC voltage-boosted FBSM-MMC is carried out to show the benefit of this method. Simulation results using PSCAD/EMTDC confirm the feasibility and validity of the proposed loss reduction method for AC voltage-boosted FBSM-MMC.

Reducing the converter loss, sub-module voltage ripple and handling DC short-circuit faults in high-voltage direct current systems are crucial for the economical and reliable operation of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). This study proposes a coordinated control method of power loss reduction and capacitor voltage balancing for AC voltage boosted full-bridge sub-module (FBSM)-MMC by controlling the second harmonic component in the circulating current. The relationship between converter loss and second harmonic circulating current (SHCC) is firstly derived for AC voltage boosted FBSM-MMC. From the analysis, it can be seen that the converter loss and ripple can be optimised by injecting the SHCC into the arm current when compared with SHCC elimination. Simulation results of an AC voltage boosted FBSM-MMC with typical parameters using PSCAD/EMTDC confirm the feasibility and validity of the proposed loss and ripple reduction method.

Active power modulation of line-commutated converter (LCC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system is increasingly utilised, especially for the case of damping low-frequency oscillation associated with synchronous machine (SM) in electromechanical timescale (around 1 Hz). Many papers have tried to analyse the mechanism of damping effects, but almost rely on numerical studies, which cannot reveal the dynamic interaction between SM and DC-power-modulated LCC. This study proposes a small-signal model of DC-power-modulated LCC based on motion equation concept. With this model, analytical investigation of low-frequency oscillation from the scope of damping and synchronising powers is presented. Comparisons of analytical results and eigenvalues draw some general conclusions which offer insight into the dynamic behaviour. By examining the case of an SM connected to a DC-power-modulated LCC, simulations in MATLAB/Simulink are conducted to verify the analytical results.

Pulse front distortion occurring in lenses can broaden the temporal profile of the pulse at focus and therefore decrease the focused intensity, especially for large-aperture femtosecond lasers. A previously proposed self-reference cross correlator was improved to directly measure the pulse front distortion of high-peak-power femtosecond lasers. The measured results of a 200 TW/27 fs laser are in good accordance with the calculated value. Moreover, the temporal intensity distribution of the pulse in the focal region was also investigated, in order to better guide and further promote the strong laser-matter interaction investigations. According to the measured PFD, the effective pulse duration at far field of this 200 TW laser was theoretically simulated to be ≈49 fs, which is almost two times the generally regarded 27 fs. As a result, the actually available focused intensity of this laser is only 55% of the case without pulse front distortion.

High-frequency oscillations caused by voltage source converters (VSCs) are constantly emerging in power systems with the increasing penetration of renewable energies. VSC models in current control timescale play a pivotal role in the analysis of these oscillation issues. Conventional VSC models show few physical mechanisms of VSC dynamics during system oscillations. Hence, this paper proposes a VSC model from the viewpoint of its internal voltage (namely, VSC output voltage), which is driven by current balancing between the current reference and the feedback in a stationary frame. The proposed model can be used to study VSC dynamic characteristics in an intuitionistic physical way. Based on the proposed model, it is found that VSC current reference in a stationary frame varies with internal voltage dynamic due to the essence of active and reactive current control in a current control timescale. Additionally, in a stationary frame, the dynamic relation between internal voltage and error current embodies a generalized integrating characteristic with adaptable center frequency determined by a phase-locked loop, which guarantees the zero steady state error of VSC current control. Comparisons of simulations between the proposed model and a switch-based model validates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

With the rapid development of wind power generation, the inertial response of wind turbines (WTs) has become a topic of wide concern recently, due to its influence on grid frequency dynamics and stability. This paper proposes and defines the inner potential to summarize and understand the inertia control methods and inertial response of type-3 and type-4 WTs, which is analogous to typical synchronous generators (SGs), to make it more easy to understand by system operators and engineers with a traditional power system background. The dynamics of the defined inner potential of the wind turbine without any inertia control is different from SGs, thus the electromechanical inertia is completely hidden. The rapid power control loop and synchronization control loop are the major reasons that the WT’s inertial response is disenabled. On the basis of the defined inner potential’s dynamic, the existing inertia control method for WTs are reviewed and summarized as three approaches, i.e., optimizing the power control or synchronization control or both. At last, the main challenges and issues of these inertia controls are attempted to explain and address.
