The satellite observational data assimilation community requires consistent hydrometer descriptions—including mass–size relation and particle size distribution—to be used in both the forecast model and observation operator. We develop a microphysics-scheme-consistent snow and graupel single-scattering property database to meet this requirement. In this database, snowflakes are modeled as a mixture of small column and large aggregated ice particles, the mixing ratios of which may be adjusted to satisfy a given mass–size relation. Snow single-scattering properties are computed for four different mass–size relations. Subsequently, the snow description in the Thompson microphysics scheme is used as an example to demonstrate how microphysics-scheme-consistent snow bulk optical properties are derived. The Thompson-scheme-consistent snow bulk optical properties are added to the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), version 2.4.0. With CloudSat Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) snow and liquid precipitation retrievals as the inputs, CRTM simulations are performed over global oceans and compared with four collocated Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) high-frequency channel observations. The CRTM simulated brightness temperatures show agreement with the GMI observed brightness temperatures in cases of light-to-moderate precipitation over extratropical and polar ice-free oceans, with root-mean-square errors of 4.3, 13.0, 1.8, and 3.3 K in the 166-GHz (vertical polarization), 166-GHz (horizontal polarization), 183 ± 3-GHz (vertical polarization), and 183 ± 7-GHz (vertical polarization) channels, respectively. The result demonstrates the potential of using the newly developed microphysics-scheme-consistent snow optical parameterization in data assimilation applications.

This study reports the development of tangent-linear and adjoint models for a vector radiative transfer model called TAMU-VRTM. This vector radiative transfer model is further validated in the case of the atmosphere–ocean coupled system, although previous validation was conducted for single and multiple layers. The TAMU-VRTM and tangent-linear and adjoint models can be applied to remote sensing and data assimilation based on spaceborne and airborne polarimetric observations. The tangent-linear and adjoint models accurately and efficiently compute the derivatives of output Stokes parameters with respect to input variables of the TAMU-VRTM. An inversion algorithm can straightforwardly compute the Jacobian matrix from the derivatives of Stokes parameters using the chain rule. We validate the tangent-linear and adjoint models by comparing them with the finite-difference method, and show that the finite-difference results converge to the tangent-linear and adjoint results. Furthermore, the adjoint model can efficiently compute the derivatives of observables with respect to the scattering phase matrix elements. This capability can be used to evaluate the scattering phase matrix assumed in an inversion algorithm and has potential for applications to inferring scattering phase matrix elements of cloud, aerosol, and hydrosol particles.

Both the computational costs and the accuracy of the invariant-imbedding T-matrix method escalate with increasing the truncation number N at which the expansions of the electromagnetic fields in terms of vector spherical harmonics are truncated. Thus, it becomes important in calculation of the single-scattering optical properties to choose N just large enough to satisfy an appropriate convergence criterion; this N we call the optimal truncation number. We present a new convergence criterion that is based on the scattering phase function rather than on the scattering cross section. For a selection of homogeneous particles that have been used in previous single-scattering studies, we consider how the optimal N may be related to the size parameter, the index of refraction, and particle shape. We investigate a functional form for this relation that generalizes previous formulae involving only size parameter, a form that shows some success in summarizing our computational results. Our results indicate clearly the sensitivity of optimal truncation number to the index of refraction, as well as the difficulty of cleanly separating this dependence from the dependence on particle shape.

The lack of knowledge of the relation between a lidar backscatter signal and particle size makes it challenging to retrieve ice-cloud particle size from spaceborne lidar observations. This study employs a synergistic combination of the state-of-the-art invariant imbedding T-matrix method and the physical geometric-optics method (PGOM) to investigate the relation between the ice-crystal scattering phase function at 180° (P11(180°)) and particle size (L) for typical ice-crystal shapes. In particular, the P11(180°) −L relation is quantitatively analyzed. The dependence of the P11(180°) −L relation on particle shape can be used with spaceborne lidar observations to detect ice-cloud particle shapes.

Among these, chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection has not been investigated. This study aimed to assess the function of CD24 in CHB.Methods: The study included 478 cases of CHB and 318 cases without CHB from 230 families that underwent genotyping. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was performed to assess the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) P170 of the CD24 gene. The detected genotypes were TT, CT, and CC. Then, family based-association analysis was carried out to investigate the association between CD24 gene polymorphism and susceptibility to CHB.Results: In the 478 patients with CHB, the frequencies of CD24 P170 T and C alleles were 35.5% and 64.5%, respectively, and the frequencies of CD24 P170 CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 39.3%, 50.4% and 10.3%, respectively. In a CD24 single-locus analysis by a family-based association test of P170 polymorphisms, T and C were not significantly associated with CHB in the additive (Z = 0.169, P = 0.866; Z = − 0.169, P = 0.866, respectively), dominant (Z = 0.522, P = 0.602; Z = 0.428, P = 0.669, respectively), or recessive (Z = − 0.428, P = 0.669; Z = − 0.522, P = 0.602, respectively) models. Transmission-disequilibrium (TD) and sib-transmission disequilibrium (STD) tests revealed no excess of T or C alleles from heterozygous parents to their children with the disease or higher frequencies of these alleles in patients compared with their normal siblings (χ2 = 0.06, P = 0.897).Conclusion: The study findings suggest that the SNP P170 of CD24 has no significant association with susceptibility to the HB virus and related phenotypes in Chinese patients.Keywords: cluster of differentiation 24, CD24, viral hepatitis, polymorphism, single nucleotide

The role of mineral dust aerosol in the global radiative energy budget is often quantified by the dust direct radiative effect (DRE). The dust DRE strongly depends on dust aerosol optical depth (DAOD), therefore, DRE efficiency (DREE = DRE / DAOD) is widely compared across different studies to eliminate differences due to the various dust loads. Nevertheless, DREE is still influenced by the uncertainties associated with dust particle size distribution (PSD) and optical properties. In this study, we derive a global clear-sky size-resolved DREE dataset in both shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) at top of the atmosphere (TOA) and surface based on satellite observations (i.e., satellite-retrieved dust extinction spatial and vertical distributions). In the DREE dataset, dust geometric diameter from 0.1 to 100 µm is divided into 10 bins and the corresponding monthly mean DREE (with respect to DAOD at 532 nm) for each size bin is derived by using the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM). Three sets of state of the art dust refractive indices (RI) and two sets of dust shape models (sphere vs. spheroid) are adopted to investigate the sensitivity of dust DREE to dust absorption and shape. As a result, the size-resolved dust DREE dataset contains globally distributed monthly mean dust DREE at TOA and surface for each of 10 size bins with 5∘ (longitude) ×2∘ (latitude) resolution as well as for each dust RI and shape combination. The size-resolved dust DREE dataset can be used to readily calculate global dust DRE for any DAOD and dust PSD, including the uncertainty in the DRE induced by dust microphysical properties, (e.g., dust PSD, RI and shape). By calculating dust DRE based on DAOD climatology retrieved from different satellite sensors and based on different dust PSD, we find that uncertainty in the spatial pattern of DAOD induces more than 10 % of the uncertainty in SW dust DRE at TOA. The observation-based dust PSD induces around 15–20 % uncertainty in dust DRE at TOA and in the atmosphere. The sensitivity assessments of dust DRE to dust RI and shape further suggest that dust nonsphericity induces a negligible effect on dust DRE estimations, while dust RI turns out to be the most important factor in determining dust DRE, particularly in SW.

Climate models are essential for our comprehensive understanding of Earth's atmosphere and can provide critical insights on future changes decades ahead. Because of these critical roles, today's climate models are continuously being developed and evaluated using constraining observations and measurements obtained by satellites, airborne, and ground-based instruments. Instrument simulators can provide a bridge between the measured or retrieved quantities and their sampling in models and field observations while considering instrument sensitivity limitations. Here we present the Earth Model Column Collaboratory (EMC2), an open-source ground-based lidar and radar instrument simulator and subcolumn generator, specifically designed for large-scale models, in particular climate models, but also applicable to high-resolution model output. EMC2 provides a flexible framework enabling direct comparison of model output with ground-based observations, including generation of subcolumns that may statistically represent finer model spatial resolutions. In addition, EMC2 emulates ground-based (and air- or space-borne) measurements while remaining faithful to large-scale models' physical assumptions implemented in their cloud or radiation schemes. The simulator uses either single particle or bulk particle size distribution lookup tables, depending on the selected scheme approach, to perform the forward calculations. To facilitate model evaluation, EMC2 also includes three hydrometeor classification methods, namely, radar- and sounding-based cloud and precipitation detection and classification, lidar-based phase classification, and a Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project Observational Simulator Package (COSP) lidar simulator emulator. The software is written in Python, is easy to use, and can be straightforwardly customized for different models, radars and lidars. Following the description of the logic, functionality, features, and software structure of EMC2, we present a case study of highly supercooled mixed-phase cloud based on measurements from the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) West Antarctic Radiation Experiment (AWARE). We compare observations with the application of EMC2 to outputs from four configurations of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) climate model (ModelE3) in single-column model (SCM) mode and from a large-eddy simulation (LES) model. We show that two of the four ModelE3 configurations can form and maintain highly supercooled precipitating cloud for several hours, consistent with observations and LES. While our focus is on one of these ModelE3 configurations, which performed slightly better in this case study, both of these configurations and the LES results post-processed with EMC2 generally provide reasonable agreement with observed lidar and radar variables. As briefly demonstrated here, EMC2 can provide a lightweight and flexible framework for comparing the results of both large-scale and high-resolution models directly with observations, with relatively little overhead and multiple options for achieving consistency with model microphysical or radiation scheme physics.

A database (TAMUdust2020) of the optical properties of irregular aerosol particles is developed for applications to radiative transfer simulations involving aerosols, particularly dust and volcanic ash particles. The particle shape model assumes an ensemble of irregular hexahedral geometries to mimic complex aerosol particle shapes in nature. State-of-the-art light scattering computational capabilities are employed to compute the single-scattering properties of these particles for wide ranges of values of the size parameter, the index of refraction, and the degree of sphericity. The database therefore is useful for various radiative transfer applications over a broad spectral region from ultraviolet to infrared. Overall, agreement between simulations and laboratory/in-situ measurements is achieved for the scattering phase matrix and backscattering of various dust aerosol and volcanic ash particles. Radiative transfer simulations of active and passive spaceborne sensor signals for dust plumes with various aerosol optical depths and the effective particle sizes clearly demonstrate the applicability of the database for aerosol studies. In particular, the present database includes, for the first time, robust backscattering of nonspherical particles spanning the entire range of aerosol particle sizes, which shall be useful to appropriately interpret lidar signals related to the physical properties of aerosol plumes. Furthermore, thermal infrared simulations based on in-situ measured refractive indices of dust aerosol particles manifest the effects of the regional variations of aerosol optical properties. This database includes a user-friendly interface to obtain user-customized aerosol single-scattering properties with respect to spectrally dependent complex refractive index, size, and the degree of sphericity.

Propagation of a lidar beam in a coupled atmosphere-ocean model consisting of multiple atmospheric and upper oceanic layers and a rough ocean surface is studied by using a vectorized Monte Carlo radiative transfer solver optimized specifically for lidar-based remote sensing applications. The effects of assumed phytoplankton morphology variations and its vertical distribution on the lidar attenuated backscatter and depolarization ratio are studied. In this study, a phytoplankton particle is assumed to be a sphere, a sphere with a core, or a randomly distorted hexahedron with or without a core. The single-scattering properties of the nonspherical/inhomogeneous particles are computed using appropriate state-of-the-art light-scattering computational capabilities. Vertical variation of the phytoplankton distribution is derived explicitly using a PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) limited carbon biomass balance equation that is subsequently coupled with the Monte Carlo solver.

The properties of a pencil of light as defined approximately in the geometric optics ray tracing method are investigated. The vector Kirchhoff integral is utilized to accurately compute the electromagnetic near field in and around the pencil of light with various beam base sizes, shapes, propagation directions and medium refractive indices. If a pencil of light has geometric mean cross section size of the order p times the wavelength, it can propagate independently to a distance p2 times the wavelength, where most of the beam energy diffuses out of the beam region. This is consistent with a statement that van de Hulst made in a classical text on light scattering. The electromagnetic near fields in the pencil of light are not uniform, have complicated patterns within short distances from the beam base, and the fields tend to converge to Fraunhofer diffraction fields far away from the base.

Light scattering by kaolinite dust samples at 532 nm is studied using a newly developed laboratory apparatus. During the experiments, dust samples are suspended in water, aerosolized by a nebulizer, and then injected into the scattering zone, with or without going through a diffusion drier, to generate either dried dust particles or water droplets with dust inclusions. The light source is a dual wavelength (532 and 1064 nm) diode-pumped solid state laser. Light scattered by an ensemble of particles is collected by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, which is mounted on the rotating arm of a stepper motor. The stepper motor rotates the CCD to cover the scattering angle range from 3° to 177°. Polarized scattering light is measured for the horizontally and vertically polarized incident light. The apparatus is calibrated, using pure water droplets as the scattering media. The response function with respect to the scattering angle is obtained by comparing the measurements with Lorenz–Mie calculations...

Accurate quantification of the effects of nonspherical particles (e.g., ice crystals in cirrus clouds and dust aerosol particles) on the radiation budget in the atmosphere-earth coupled system requires a robust characterization of their light scattering and absorption properties. Recent studies have shown that it is feasible to compute the single-scattering properties of all sizes of arbitrary nonspherical atmospheric particles by combining the numerically exact invariant imbedding T-matrix (IITM) method and the approximate physical geometric optics method (PGOM). IITM cannot be implemented for very large-sized particles due to its tremendous demand on computational resources. While either method is usable for moderate sized particles, PGOM does not include the edge effect contributions to the extinction and absorption efficiencies. Unfortunately, we can only rigorously calculate the edge effect contributions to the extinction and absorption efficiencies for spheres and spheroids. This study develops empirical formulas for the edge effect contributions to the extinction and absorption efficiencies in the case of a special superspheroid called a superegg by modifying the formulas for the extinction and absorption efficiencies of a spheroid to account for the changes in roundness. We use the superegg edge effect correction formulas to compare the optical properties of supereggs and simple, convex particles, as an initial approximation to more complex atmospheric aerosols. This study is the first step towards quantifying the edge effect contributions to the extinction and absorption efficiencies of a wide range of natural nonspherical particles.

An ice crystal single-scattering property database is developed in the microwave spectral region (1 to 874 GHz) to provide the scattering, absorption, and polarization properties of 12 ice crystal habits (10-plate aggregate, 5-plate aggregate, 8-column aggregate, solid hexagonal column, hollow hexagonal column, hexagonal plate, solid bullet rosette, hollow bullet rosette, droxtal, oblate spheroid, prolate spheroid, and sphere) with particle maximum dimensions from 2 µm to 10 mm. For each habit, four temperatures (160, 200, 230, and 270 K) are selected to account for temperature dependence of the ice refractive index. The microphysical and scattering properties include projected area, volume, extinction efficiency, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and six independent nonzero phase matrix elements (i.e. P11, P12, P22, P33, P43 and P44). The scattering properties are computed by the Invariant Imbedding T-Matrix (II-TM) method and the Improved Geometric Optics Method (IGOM). The computation results show that the temperature dependence of the ice single-scattering properties in the microwave region is significant, particularly at high frequencies. Potential active and passive remote sensing applications of the database are illustrated through radar reflectivity and radiative transfer calculations. For cloud radar applications, ignoring temperature dependence has little effect on ice water content measurements. For passive microwave remote sensing, ignoring temperature dependence may lead to brightness temperature biases up to 5 K in the case of a large ice water path.

Q-space analysis is applied to extensive simulations of the single-scattering properties of ice crystals with various habits/shapes over a range of sizes. The analysis uncovers features common to all the shapes: a forward scattering regime with intensity quantitatively related to the Rayleigh scattering by the particle and the internal coupling parameter, followed by a Guinier regime dependent upon the particle size, a complex power law regime with incipient two dimensional diffraction effects, and, in some cases, an enhanced backscattering regime. The effects of significant absorption on the scattering profile are also studied. The overall features found for the ice crystals are similar to features in scattering from same sized spheres.

A regression-based gas absorption parameterization method is developed. The present method considers an inhomogeneous atmosphere as a whole to perform regression calculations. This method can be applied in fast hyperspectral shortwave radiative transfer computations because of its computational efficiency and accuracy. We incorporate this regression method into a fast small-angle approximation radiative transfer model that fully considers the polarization state of radiative transfer.

Considering the combined effects of the intensity scintillation and the beam wander in the satellite-to-ground laser uplink communication system, the bit error rate (BER) performance of three modulation schemes – on–off keying (OOK), binary phase-shifted keying (BPSK), quadrature phase-shifted keying (QPSK) are investigated. In comparison with the condition in which the atmospheric turbulence is not taken into consideration, conclusions that atmospheric turbulence severely degrades the performance of the system are drawn. Based on the simulation results, the advantages of BPSK are analyzed in contrast with OOK and QPSK. Specially, when transmission power is 4 W, performance of OOK shows 18 dB impairment while performance of QPSK shows 3 dB impairment compared with BPSK under the atmospheric fluctuation. Further compared to QPSK, BPSK owns lower BER and simpler process. Considered the feasibility in communication systems, BPSK should be the most reasonable modulation scheme which can decrease the BER of systems without increasing the transmitter power among these three modulation schemes. Besides, optimum divergence angle, optimum beam radius and appropriate receiver diameter are also analyzed, which is significant in practical applications.

Similarity relations applied to ice cloud radiance calculations are theoretically analyzed and numerically validated. If τ(1-ϖ) and τ(1-ϖg) are conserved where τ is optical thickness, ϖ the single-scattering albedo, and g the asymmetry factor, it is possible that substantially different phase functions may give rise to similar radiances in both conservative and non-conservative scattering cases, particularly in the case of large optical thicknesses. In addition to theoretical analysis, this study uses operational ice cloud optical thickness retrievals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level 2 Collection 5 (C5) and Collection 6 (C6) cloud property products to verify radiative similarity relations. It is found that, if the MODIS C5 and C6 ice cloud optical thickness values are multiplied by their respective (1-ϖg) factors, the resultant products referred to as the effective optical thicknesses become similar with their ratio values around unity. Furthermore, the ratios of the C5 and C6 ice cloud effective optical thicknesses display an angular variation pattern similar to that of the corresponding ice cloud phase function ratios. The MODIS C5 and C6 values of ice cloud similarity parameter, defined as [(1-ϖ)/(1-ϖg)](1/2), also tend to be similar.

Ice clouds and dust aerosols are two important atmospheric constituents. To reliably assess the radiativeforcings and to accurately infer the microphysical and optical properties of these two atmospheric components, it is necessary to use appropriate optical properties of ice crystals and dust particles. In this talk we will discuss the use of remote sensing techniques based on observations by passive and active sensors to constrain the optical properties. Specifically, we will use the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), POLDER (POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances), MISR (Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer), and CALIOP/CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization on the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) measurements in combination of theoretical light scattering simulations to identify the optimal single-scattering properties (extinction coefficient, single-scattering albedo, and phase matrix) of nonspherical/inhomogeneous ice crystals and dust particles.

Minimum shift keying (MSK) has been widely used in fiber optical communication and free-space optical communication. In order to introduce MSK into satellite laser communication, the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the MSK scheme is investigated in uplink communications under the influence of atmospheric turbulence consisting of weak fluctuation and beam wander. Numerical results indicate that the BER performance of MSK is much better than the performance of on–off keying (OOK). With the laser power being 4 W, the improvement is 5 dB in coherent demodulation and 15 dB in delay coherent demodulation. Furthermore, compared with OOK, optimal values of the divergence angle, receiver diameter, and transmitter beam radius are easier and more practical to achieve in the MSK scheme. The work can benefit ground-to-satellite laser uplink communication system design.
