Abstract Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) have attracted increasing attention for sustainably powering Internet of Things (IoT) electronics. Sb2S3 is a promising IPV candidate material with a bandgap of ~1.75 eV, which is near the optimal value for indoor energy harvesting. However, the performance of Sb2S3 solar cells is limited by nonradiative recombination, which is dependent on the quality of the absorber films. Additive engineering is an effective strategy to fine tune the properties of solution-processed films. This work shows that the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) into the precursor solution allows the nucleation and growth of Sb2S3 films to be controlled, enabling the deposition of high-quality Sb2S3 absorbers with reduced grain boundary density, optimized band positions, and increased carrier concentration. Complemented with computations, it is revealed that the incorporation of MEA leads to a more efficient and energetically favorable deposition for enhanced heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate, which increases the grain size and accelerates the deposition rate of Sb2S3 films. Due to suppressed carrier recombination and improved charge-carrier transport in Sb2S3 absorber films, the MEA-modulated Sb2S3 solar cell yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.22% under AM1.5 G illumination, and an IPV PCE of 17.55% under 1000 lux white light emitting diode (WLED) illumination, which is the highest yet reported for Sb2S3 IPVs. Furthermore, we construct high performance large-area Sb2S3 IPV minimodules to power IoT wireless sensors, and realize the long-term continuous recording of environmental parameters under WLED illumination in an office. This work highlights the great prospect of Sb2S3 photovoltaics for indoor energy harvesting.

The precise determination of surgical margins is essential for the management of multifocal cutaneous cancers, including extramammary Paget’s disease. This study introduces a novel strategy for precise margin identification in such tumors, employing multichannel autofluorescence lifetime decay (MALD), fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), and machine learning, including confidence learning algorithms. Using FLIM, 51 unstained frozen sections were analyzed, of which 13 (25%) sections, containing 5003 FLIM patches, were used for training the residual network model (ResNet–FLIM). The remaining 38 (75%) sections, including 16 918 patches, were retained for external validation. Application of confidence learning with deep learning reduced the reliance on extensive pathologist annotation. Refined labels obtained by ResNet–FLIM were then incorporated into a support vector machine (SVM) model, which utilized fiber-optic-based MALD data. Both models exhibited substantial agreement with the pathological assessments. Of the 35 MALD-measured tissue segments, six (17%) segments were selected as the training dataset, including 900 decay profiles. The remaining 29 segments (83%), including 2406 decay profiles, were reserved for external validation. The ResNet–FLIM model achieved 100% sensitivity and specificity. The SVM–MALD model demonstrated 94% sensitivity and 83% specificity. Notably, fiber-optic-MALD allows assessing 12 sites per patient and delivering predictions within 10 min. Variations in the necessary safe margin length were observed among patients, highlighting the necessity for patient-specific approaches to determine surgical margins. This innovative approach holds potential for wide clinical application, providing a rapid and accurate margin evaluation method that significantly reduces a pathologist’s workload and improves patient outcomes through personalized medicine.

Spike architecture influences both grain weight and grain number per spike, which are the two major components of grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, the complex wheat genome and the influence of various environmental factors pose challenges in mapping the causal genes that affect spike traits. Here, we systematically identified genes involved in spike trait formation by integrating information on genomic variation and gene regulatory networks controlling young spike development in wheat. We identified 170 loci that are responsible for variations in spike length, spikelet number per spike, and grain number per spike through genome-wide association study and meta-QTL analyses. We constructed gene regulatory networks for young inflorescences at the double ridge stage and the floret primordium stage, in which the spikelet meristem and the floret meristem are predominant, respectively, by integrating transcriptome, histone modification, chromatin accessibility, eQTL, and protein–protein interactome data. From these networks, we identified 169 hub genes located in 76 of the 170 QTL regions whose polymorphisms are significantly associated with variation in spike traits. The functions of TaZF-B1, VRT-B2, and TaSPL15-A/D in establishment of wheat spike architecture were verified. This study provides valuable molecular resources for understanding spike traits and demonstrates that combining genetic analysis and developmental regulatory networks is a robust approach for dissection of complex traits.

Recently, extreme wildfires occur frequently around the world and emit substantial brown carbon (BrC) into the atmosphere, whereas the molecular compositions and photochemical evolution of BrC remain poorly understood. In this work, primary smoke aerosols were generated from wood smoldering, and secondary smoke aerosols were formed by the OH radical photooxidation in an oxidation flow reactor, where both primary and secondary smoke samples were collected on filters. After solvent extraction of filter samples, the molecular composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was determined by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS). The molecular composition of dissolved BrC was obtained based on the constraints of DOC formulae. The proportion of dissolved BrC fractions accounted for approximately 1/3–1/2 molecular formulae of DOC. The molecular characteristics of dissolved BrC showed higher levels of carbon oxidation state, double bond equivalents, and modified aromaticity index than those of DOC, indicating that dissolved BrC fractions were a class of organic structures with relatively higher oxidation state, unsaturated and aromatic degree in DOC fractions. The comparative analysis suggested that aliphatic and olefinic structures dominated DOC fractions (contributing to 70.1%-76.9%), while olefinic, aromatic, and condensed aromatic structures dominated dissolved BrC fractions (contributing to 97.5%-99.9%). It is worth noting that dissolved BrC fractions only contained carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs)-like structures, unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic structures, and highly oxygenated compounds. CRAMs-like structures were the most abundant species in both DOC and dissolved BrC fractions. Nevertheless, the specific molecular characteristics for DOC and dissolved BrC fractions varied with subgroups after aging. The results highlight the similarities and differences in the molecular compositions and characteristics of DOC and dissolved BrC fractions with aging. This work will provide insights into understanding the molecular composition of DOC and dissolved BrC in smoke.

The crystal structure has a great influence on the dielectric and piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). In this work, we prepared PVDF films with two typical crystalline phases (α and β). In situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) were employed to investigate the responses of different PVDF crystalline phases to charge mobility, polarization, and piezoelectric properties. We used a homemade Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) to inject charges into the two crystalline phases to investigate the differences in the response of different crystalline phases of PVDF to electrical excitation on a microscopic scale. It was found that the α-phase has a lower charge injection barrier and is more susceptible to charge injection and that the α-phase is accompanied by a faster charge dissipation rate, which makes it easier to accumulate charge at the interface between the α-phase and β-phase PVDF. Moreover, the PFM polarization manipulation showed no change in the amplitude and phase diagram of the α-phase under ±10 V bias. In contrast, the β-phase showed a clear polarization reversal phenomenon and a significant increase in piezoelectric amplitude, which is consistent with its polar intrinsic properties. This study provides valuable insights into the multiphase contributions and a reference for designing advanced PVDF dielectrics.

Abstract Knowledge of aerosol radiative effects in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is limited due to the lack of reliable aerosol optical properties, especially the single scattering albedo (SSA). We firstly reported in situ measurement of SSA in Lhasa using a cavity enhanced albedometer (CEA) at λ = 532 nm from 22nd May to 11th June 2021. Unexpected strong aerosol absorbing ability was observed with an average SSA of 0.69. Based on spectral absorptions measured by Aethalometer (AE33), black carbon (BC) was found to be the dominated absorbing species, accounting for about 83% at λ = 370 nm, followed by primary and secondary brown carbon (BrCpri and BrCsec). The average direct aerosol radiative forcing at the top of atmosphere (DARFTOA) was 2.83 W/m2, indicating aerosol warming effect on the Earth‐atmosphere system. Even though aerosol loading is low, aerosol heating effect plays a significant role on TP warming due to strong absorbing ability.

Abstract Pluripotent stem cell‐derived small extracellular vesicles (PSC‐sEVs) have demonstrated great clinical translational potential in multiple aging‐related degenerative diseases. Characterizing the PSC‐sEVs is crucial for their clinical applications. However, the specific marker pattern of PSC‐sEVs remains unknown. Here, the sEVs derived from two typical types of PSCs including induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC‐sEVs) and embryonic stem cells (ESC‐sEVs) were analysed using proteomic analysis by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS), and surface marker phenotyping analysis by nanoparticle flow cytometry (NanoFCM). A group of pluripotency‐related proteins were found to be enriched in PSC‐sEVs by LC‐MS/MS and then validated by Western Blot analysis. To investigate whether these proteins were specifically expressed in PSC‐sEVs, sEVs derived from seven types of non‐PSCs (non‐PSC‐sEVs) were adopted for analysis. The results showed that PODXL, OCT4, Dnmt3a, and LIN28A were specifically enriched in PSC‐sEVs but not in non‐PSC‐sEVs. Then, commonly used surface antigens for PSC identification (SSEA4, Tra‐1‐60 and Tra‐1‐81) and PODXL were gauged at single‐particle resolution by NanoFCM for surface marker identification. The results showed that the positive rates of PODXL (>50%) and SSEA4 (>70%) in PSC‐sEVs were much higher than those in non‐PSC‐sEVs (

High catalytic performances of metal-semiconductor heterostructures have gained significant attention in recent years. However, developing fast and low-cost synthesis of multiphase heterojunction catalysts has long been a challenge. Herein, three phases of Cu-CeO2-SrTiO3-δ heterojunction catalyst are successfully synthesized by combining with sol-gel and rapid plasma exsolution method. Using dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD), Cu nanoparticles are exsolved and uniformly distributed on the surface of CeO2-SrTiO3-δ. This unique multiphase heterojunction catalyst exhibits superior performance in photothermal reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reactions. The yield of CO from this catalyst is impressive at 11.32 mmol g−1 h−1, 9 times greater than pure SrTiO3, and the selectivity for CO is high (99.95%). The enhanced activity is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect resulting from the incorporation of three phases of Cu nanoparticles, CeO2, and SrTiO3-δ, as well as their interfaces. The increase in oxygen vacancy sites in CeO2 enhances the adsorption of CO2, whereas the doping and exsolution of Cu help to broaden the light absorption range. A significant role is played by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles in promoting the catalytic performance of RWGS. This study demonstrates a simple and efficient method for fabricating multiphase heterojunction catalysts, providing new strategies for photothermal CO2 reduction.

The disc spring system is applied to the vibration screen, which can effectively reduce the exciting force and improve screening capacity. In this work, the dynamic characteristics and screening performance of the disc spring vibration screen are studied. The modal simulation and experimental results show that the model vibration direction at first natural frequency is consistent with the working direction of the vibration screen. Moreover, the trajectory analysis and discrete element screening simulation prove that the disc spring vibration screen has better screening performance than the coil spring vibration screen. Eventually, by comparing required exciting force under the same amplitude, fatigue life of the spindle bearing, and energy consumption between the coil spring and disc spring vibration screen, it can be found that disc spring vibration screen has better mechanical properties, higher reliability, and lower energy consumption.

Temperature and other environmental factors play an integral role in the metabolic adjustments of animals and drive a series of morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptions essential to survival. However, it is not clear how the capacity of an organism for temperature acclimation translates into seasonal acclimatization to maintain survival. Basal metabolic rate (BMR), evaporative water loss (EWL), and energy budget were measured in the Chinese Hwamei (Garrulax canorus) following winter and summer acclimatization, and in those acclimatized to 15 ​°C (cold) and 35 ​°C (warm) under laboratory conditions for 28 days. In addition to the above indicators, internal organ masses, as well as state 4 respiration and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity were also measured for the liver, skeletal muscle, heart, and kidney. Both winter-acclimatized and cold-acclimated birds exhibited significantly higher BMR, EWL, and energy budget, as well as organ masses, state 4 respiration, and COX activity compared with the summer-acclimatized and warm-acclimated birds. This indicated that the Chinese Hwamei could adapt to seasonal or just temperature changes through some physiological and biochemical thermogenic adjustments, which would be beneficial to cope with natural environmental changes. A general linear model showed that body mass, BMR, GEI, state 4 respiration in the liver and kidney, and COX activity in the skeletal muscle, liver, and kidney were significantly affected by temperature and acclimation. A positive correlation was observed between BMR and each of the other parameters (body mass, EWL, energy budget, heart dry mass, kidney dry mass, state 4 respiration) in the muscle, heart, and kidney and also between BMR and COX activity in the muscle and kidney. The results suggested that similar to seasonal acclimatization, Chinese Hwameis subjected to temperature acclimation also exhibited significant differences in metabolism-related physiological and biochemical parameters, depending on the temperature. The data also supported the prediction that metabolic adjustment might be the primary means by which small birds meet the energetic challenges triggered by cold conditions.

Ground surface ozone (O3) is an emerging concern in China due to its complex formation process. In August 2020, field measurements of O3, NOx, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were carried out in Hefei’s western suburbs. The pollution features of VOCs and O3 formation were thoroughly analyzed. The total VOC concentration was 42.26 ppb, with the dominant contributor being oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs). Seven emission sources were recognized using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, including aged air masses, combustion sources, fuel evaporation, industrial emissions, vehicular emission, solvent utilization, and biogenic emission. Ozone generation mainly occurred under an NOx-limited regime based on the zero-dimensional box model analysis. According to the scenario analysis, the 13% cut in O3 might be achieved by the 10% and 30% reduction in NOx and VOCs, respectively. The O3 budget analysis demonstrates its high ozone production rate during the pollution period. The influence of regional transport cannot be ignored for high O3 pollution. This paper provides scientific evidence for O3 production and the strategies of reducing O3 by controlling its precursors.

By studying dynamic characteristics of the leaf spring system, a new elastic component is designed to reduce the working load and to a certain extent to ensure the linearity as well as increase the amplitude in the vertical and horizontal directions in vibration screen. The modal parameters, amplitudes, and amplification factors of the leaf spring system are studied by simulation and experiment. The modal results show that the leaf spring system vibrates in horizontal and vertical directions in first and second mode shapes, respectively. It is conducive to loosening and moving the particles on the vibration screen. In addition, it is found that the maximum amplitude and amplification factor in the horizontal direction appear at 300 r/min (5 Hz) while those in the vertical direction appear at 480 r/min (8 Hz), which are higher than those in the disc spring system. Moreover, the amplitude of the leaf spring system increases proportionally with the increase of exciting force while the amplification factors are basically the same under different exciting forces, indicating the good linearity of the leaf spring system. Furthermore, the minimum exciting force occurs in the leaf spring system under the same amplitude by comparing the exciting force among different elastic components. The above works can provide guidance for the industrial production in vibration screen.

In this work, the influences of constraint modes and the number of disc springs on the dynamic characteristics of the disc spring system are studied by simulation and experiment. The amplitudes and amplification factors of the disc spring system under different constraint modes and different numbers of disc springs are obtained. The results show that the maximum amplitude and amplification factor both appear at the constraint modes of locking and no preloading, which indicates that the locking and no preloading is the best constraint mode among the four different constraint modes. Moreover, the amplitude of the disc spring system first increases and then decreases with the number of disc springs increasing, while the amplification factor increases with the number of disc springs increasing. The maximum amplification factor (10.21 in experiment) of the disc spring system appears at 10 disc springs. By studying the relationship between the number of disc springs and amplification factor and damping, we find that the damping of the disc spring system can be reduced by increasing the disc spring numbers, and thus, the corresponding amplification factor can be improved. Furthermore, as the number of disc spring increases, the height differences of disc springs before and after locking are all close to 3 mm, which indicates that the amount of locking compression in the assembly process has a good consistency when the number of disc springs changes. The aforementioned works can provide guidance for the industrial production in screen vibration.

To avoid too large exciting force in traditional linear vibrating screen and unstable working state in resonance screen, the disc spring system is applied in the linear vibration screen. The model of the disc spring system in vibration screen is established by simulation and experiment. The characteristics of modal and amplitude of the disc spring system in vibration screen are studied. We found that the disc spring system vibrates in vertical direction at the third-order natural frequency, which is consistent with the direction of the vibration screen when screening particles. Moreover, the third-order natural frequencies in simulation and experiment are basically consistent. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of the disc spring system appears at 960 r/min (16 Hz), which is in accord with the third-order natural frequency. Meanwhile, the amplitude increases proportionally with the increase of exciting force, while the amplification factors are the same under three different exciting forces. This indicates that the disc spring system has excellent linearity. The results of research provide guidance for design and application of elastic components on the vibration screen.
