Utilizing ionic liquid (IL)-water mixtures as selective extraction solvents for raw materials from natural sources represents an efficacious approach; however, elucidating the underlying mechanisms inherent in various types of IL-aqueous solutions continues to pose a significant challenge. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations are employed to illuminate the influence of the functional anion within ILs and the water content on the solvation mechanism and phase separation phenomena observed during the extraction of camptothecin (CPT) using aqueous IL solutions. The simulation results show that the anions in ILs preferentially dissolve CPT through hydrogen bonding at low water concentrations. As the water concentration increases, the hydrophobic IL binds more tightly to CPT, enabling the water to self-aggregate. The anions in hydrophilic IL form hydrogen bonds with water instead, further enhancing the dissolution of CPT. This work reveals the mechanism of phase separation and solvation of different types of IL aqueous solutions, which is helpful in developing new drug extraction and purification technologies.

Abstract Background The intestinal epithelial barrier is the first line of defense against pathogens and noxious substances entering the body from the outside world. Through proliferation and differentiation, intestinal stem cells play vital roles in tissue regeneration, repair, and the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is caused by the disruption of intestinal homeostasis through the invasion of toxic compounds and pathogenic microorganisms. Hylotelephium erythrostictum (Miq.) H. Ohba (H. erythrostictum) is a plant with diverse pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antirheumatic properties. However, the roles of H. erythrostictum and its bioactive compounds in the treatment of intestinal injury are unknown. Methods We examined the protective effects of H. erythrostictum water extract (HEWE) and H. erythrostictum butanol extract (HEBE) on Drosophila intestinal injury caused by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) or Erwinia carotovoracarotovora 15 (Ecc15). Results Our findings demonstrated that both HEWE and HEBE significantly prolonged the lifespan of flies fed toxic compounds, reduced cell mortality, and maintained intestinal integrity and gut acid‒base homeostasis. Furthermore, both HEWE and HEBE eliminated DSS-induced ROS accumulation, alleviated the increases in antimicrobial peptides(AMPs) and intestinal lipid droplets caused by Ecc15 infection, and prevented excessive ISC proliferation and differentiation by inhibiting the JNK, EGFR, and JAK/STAT pathways. In addition, they reversed the significant changes in the proportions of the gut microbiota induced by DSS. The bioactive compounds contained in H. erythrostictum extracts have sufficient potential for use as natural therapeutic agents for the treatment of IBD in humans. Conclusion Our results suggest that HEWE and HEBE are highly effective in reducing intestinal inflammation and thus have the potential to be viable therapeutic agents for the treatment of gut inflammation. Acetylene is produced from the reaction between calcium carbide (CaC2) and water, while the production of CaC2 generates significant amount of carbon dioxide not only because it is an energy-intensive process but also the raw material for CaC2 synthesis is from coal. Here, a comprehensive biomass-to-acetylene process was constructed that integrated several units including biomass pyrolysis, oxygen-thermal CaC2 fabrication and calcium looping. For comparison, a coal-to-acetylene process was also established by using coal as feedstock. The carbon efficiency, energy efficiency and environmental impacts of the bio-based calcium carbide acetylene (BCCA) and coal-based calcium carbide acetylene (CCCA) processes were systematically analyzed. Moreover, the environmental impacts were further evaluated by applying thermal integration at system level and energy substitution in CaC2 furnace. Even though the BCCA process showed lower carbon efficiency and energy efficiency than that of the CCCA process, life cycle assessment demonstrated the BCCA (1.873 kgCO2eq kg-prod−1) a lower carbon footprint process which is 0.366 kgCO2eq kg-prod−1 lower compared to the CCCA process. With sustainable energy (biomass power) substitution in CaC2 furnace, an even lower GWP value of 1.377 kgCO2eq kg-prod−1 can be achieved in BCCA process. This work performed a systematic analysis on integrating biomass into industrial acetylene production, and revealed the positive role of biomass as raw material (carbon) and energy supplier.

Advanced waveform design schemes have been widely employed for radar and sonar remote sensing analysis such as target detection and separation, where significant range sidelobe is a main factor that limits the improvement of analysis performance. As an extensional type of Golay complementary waveforms, complementary sets are a waveform design scenario of concern that shows more diversity in the design of transmission order, and results in a different distribution of range sidelobes. This work proposes an oversampled generalized Prouhet–Thue–Morse (OGPTM) method for the transmitted signal design of complementary sets, with comprehensive analysis to the influence on the sidelobe distribution. Based on this idea and our previous work, we further put forward a pointwise multiplication processor (PMuP) to integrate two delay-Doppler maps of oversampled complementary sets, which achieve much better sidelobe suppression performance on high-speed target detection with range migration.

This article proposes an along-track swarm synthetic aperture radar (ATS-SAR) system to accomplish the high frame rate and enhance imaging resolution simultaneously. Unlike the current along-track multistatic SAR (Multi-SAR), each platform of the proposed ATS-SAR only collects part of the aperture data. Then, the bistatic pair acquisitions of ATS-SAR are transformed into virtual monostatic subapertures, and a large aperture is combined in a short time. Considering the practical motion state difference of each individual platform, various ATS-SAR echo models are thoroughly investigated and established. Furthermore, a subaperture collaboration imaging algorithm for ATS-SAR (SACIm-ATS) based on sparse constraints is also proposed. An effective phase compensation function is designed to improve echo sparsity by homogenizing the ATS-SAR echo. Then, the compressed sensing method can be utilized to accurately estimate more azimuth data, obtaining a higher azimuth resolution. Simulations and a real measured experiment are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed ATS-SAR and the SACIm-ATS algorithm. Compared with the state-of-the-art imaging algorithms, the proposed SACIm-ATS algorithm can significantly enhance the ATS-SAR imaging performance.

Abstract Development of an electrocatalyst that is cheap and has good properties to replace conventional noble metals is important for H2 applications. In this study, dealloying of an amorphous Ti37Cu60Ru3 alloy was performed to prepare a free‐standing nanostructured hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. The effect of dealloying and addition of Ru to TiCu alloys on the microstructure and HER properties under alkaline conditions was investigated. 3 at.% Ru addition in Ti40Cu60 decreases the overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and Tafel slope of the dealloyed samples to 35 and 34 mV dec−1. The improvement of electrocatalytic properties was attributed to the formation of a nanostructure and the modification of the electronic structure of the catalyst. First‐principles calculations based on density function theory indicate that Ru decreases the Gibbs free energy of water dissociation. This work presents a method to prepare an efficient electrocatalyst via dealloying of amorphous alloys.

A two-factor (2 × 3) orthogonal test was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary myo-inositol (MI) on the osmoregulation and carbohydrate metabolism of euryhaline fish tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under sustained hypertonic stress (20 practical salinity units [psu]). 6 diets containing either normal carbohydrate (NC, 30%) or high carbohydrate (HC, 45%) levels, with 3 levels (0, 400 and 1,200 mg/kg diet) of MI, respectively, were fed to 540 fish under 20 psu for 8 weeks. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between inositol metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under acute hyperosmotic stress. 50 mg/mL glucose solution and PBS was injected to the fish of experimental group and the control group, respectively. The fish were then transferred to 16 psu brackish water for hyperosmotic stress immediately, and sampled at 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h post stress. The hyperosmotic stress significantly increased the osmotic pressure, glucose content of serum, the process of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver of fish in both groups over time. The expression of genes involved in myo-inositol (MI) synthesis and transport was all induced by hypertonicity in gill, kidney and liver of fish in both groups. The injection of glucose solution significantly decreased MI synthesis in gill, kidney and liver, and relieved the apoptosis of liver under acute hyperosmotic stress. However, glucose injection significantly increased Na+K+-ATPase activity in the gill, as well as serum osmotic pressure, and the decomposition of carbohydrate, indicating that additional glucose promoted osmoregulation ability of fish. The results of this research suggested that during the hyperosmotic stress, the injection of exogenous glucose could not only provide energy that required for osmoregulation, but also participate in the osmoregulation by acting as an osmolyte itself.

The Chinese sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) is an important aquaculture fish, but diseases caused by Aeromonas hydrophila have led to severe economic losses to the aquaculture industry in recent years. To date, only a few studies have focused on the relationship between the intestinal immune response and changes in intestinal microbes by A. hydrophila infection. Here, we report the transcriptome and intestinal changes in infected sea bass. Histopathological results showed that severe steatosis and vacuolation occurred in the liver and that the intestinal villi and mesentery were seriously affected after infection. By extracting total RNA from intestinal tissue and studying the transcriptome profile, 1,678 genes (1,013 upregulated and 665 downregulated) were identified as significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs). These genes are involved in many immune-related signalling pathways, such as the NOD-like receptor, C-type lectin receptor, and Toll-like receptor signalling pathways. Moreover, the intestinal microbes of sea bass changed significantly after infection. Interestingly, at the genus level, there was an increase in Serratia, Candida arthromitus and Faecalibacterium as well as a decrease in Akkermansia and Parabacteroides after infection. The results also indicated that some of the DEGs involved in the immune response were related to the genus level of intestinal microbiota. Finally, there was a relationship between gene expression patterns and the bacterial structure in the host intestine. Our study provides a reference for the study of the immune response and particular functions of intestinal microbes of sea bass after pathogen infection.

It is still a major challenge to remove tumor cells and fill bone defects after tumor resection. Combined with the 3D printing technology, the composite bioceramics scaffolds were fabricated with interconnected porous magnesium-doped wollastonite (CSi-Mg) scaffolds as the architecture and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) as the surface. The influence of manufacturing process on the n-HA layer thickness and degradation performance, biological performance and anti-tumor performance of the composite scaffolds were investigated. The n-HA surface layer could effectively retard the degradation rate of CSi-Mg scaffolds and maintain high mechanical strength (over 90 MPa) after immersion in simulated body fluid for 3 weeks. Meanwhile, CSi-Mg/n-HA3 scaffold induced about 50 % of cell death for human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) in vitro. CSi-Mg/n-HAx (x = 1, 3) scaffolds could improve the osteogenic performance of Rat BMSC. These findings demonstrate that the bioceramic composite scaffold with high strength, good osteogenic performance and anti-tumor performance is promising for the treatment of tissue injury after resection of osteosarcoma.

Due to significant electromagnetic interference, radar interruptions, and other factors, Azimuth Missing Data (AMD) may occur in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) echo, resulting in severe defocusing and even false targets. An important approach to solving this problem is to utilize Compressed Sensing (CS) methods on AMD echo to reconstruct complete echo, which can be abbreviated as the AMD Imaging Algorithm (AMDIA). However, the State-of-the-Art AMDIA (SOA-AMDIA) do not consider the influence of motion phase errors, resulting in an unacceptable estimation error of the complete echo reconstruction. Therefore, in order to enhance the practical applicability of AMDIA, this article proposes an improved AMDIA using Sparse Representation Autofocusing (SRA-AMDIA). The proposed SRA-AMDIA aims to accurately focus the imaging result, even in the Phase Error AMD (PE-AMD) echo case. Firstly, a Phase-Compensation Function (PCF) based on the phase history of the scene centroid is designed. When the PCF is multiplied with the PE-AMD echo in the range-frequency domain, a coarse-focused sparse representation signal can be obtained in the range-Doppler domain. However, due to the influence of unknown PE, the sparsity of this sparse representation signal is unsatisfying, breaking the sparse constraints requirement of the CS method. Therefore, we introduced a minimum entropy autofocusing algorithm to autofocus this sparse representation signal. Next, the estimated PE is compensated for this sparse representation signal, and a more sparse representation signal is obtained. Hence, the non-PE complete echo can be reconstructed. Finally, the estimated complete echo can be used with classic imaging algorithms to obtain high-resolution imaging results under the PE-AMD condition. Simulation and real measured data have verified the effectiveness of the proposed SRA-AMDIA.

Due to the substantial electromagnetic interference, radar interruptions, and other factors, the SAR system may fail to receive valid data in some azimuth areas. This phenomenon is known as Azimuth Missing Data (AMD). If classical SAR imaging algorithms are performed directly using AMD echo, the imaging results may be defocused or even display false targets, which seriously affects the accuracy of the image. Thus, we proposed a Sub-echo Segmentation and Reconstruction Azimuth Missing Data SAR Imaging Algorithm (SSR-AMDIA) to solve the problem of incomplete echo SAR imaging in this article. Instead of using the motion compensation step of the Polar Format algorithm (PFA) to recover the full echo from the AMD echo, the proposed SSR-AMDIA eliminates the effect of the planar approximation in PFA and expands the maximum depth of focus (DOF). The raw AMD echo was first subjected to range compression and Range Cell Migration Correction (RCMC), after which the AMD-RCMC echo was divided along the range direction. Then, we constructed a series of phase compensation functions based on the sub-segment AMD-RCMC echoes to guarantee the perfect recovery of the full RCMC echoes corresponding to the sub-scenes. Finally, we combined them to obtain the complete RCMC echo, and an excellent focused imaging result was then obtained via azimuth compression. Simulation and experimental data verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we derived the mathematical expressions for the two-dimensional maximum DOFs of the proposed algorithm. In contrast to the State-Of-the-Art (SOA) AMDIA, the SSR-AMDIA can obtain a superior imaging performance in a larger imaging scope under the conditions of most AMD cases.

An enhanced Doppler resolution and sidelobe suppression have long been practical issues for moving target detection using Golay complementary waveforms. In this paper, Golay complementary waveform radar returns are combined with a proposed processor, the pointwise thresholding processor (PTP). Compared to the pointwise minimization processor (PMP) illustrated in a previous work, which could only achieve a Doppler resolution comparable to existing methods, this approach essentially increases the Doppler resolution to a very high level in theory. This study also introduced a further filtering process for the delay-Doppler map of the PTP, and simulations verified that the method results in a delay-Doppler map virtually free of range sidelobes.

Metal/nitrogen-doped carbon single-atom catalysts (M−N−C SACs) show excellent catalytic performance with a maximum atom utilization and customizable tunable electronic structure. However, precisely modulating the M−Nx coordination in M−N−C SACs remains a grand challenge. Here, we used a N-rich nucleobase coordination self-assembly strategy to precisely regulate the dispersion of metal atoms by controlling the metal ratio. Meanwhile, the elimination of Zn during pyrolysis produced porous carbon microspheres with a specific surface area of up to 1151 m2 g−1, allowing maximum exposure of Co−N4 sites and facilitating charge transport in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. Thereby, the monodispersed cobalt sites (Co−N4) in N-rich (18.49 at%) porous carbon microspheres (CoSA/N−PCMS) displayed excellent ORR activity under alkaline conditions. Simultaneously, the Zn−air battery (ZAB) assembled with CoSA/N−PCMS outperformed Pt/C+RuO2-based ZABs in terms of power density and capacity, proving that they have good prospects for practical application.

PurposeIn radiotherapy, high radiation exposure to optic nerve (ON) can cause optic neuropathy or vision loss. In this study, we evaluated the pattern and extent of the ON movement using MRI, and investigated the potential dosimetric effect of this movement on radiotherapy.MethodsMRI was performed in multiple planes in 5 human subjects without optic pathway abnormalities to determine optic nerve motion in different scenarios. The subjects were requested to gaze toward five directions during MRI acquisitions, including neutral (straight forward), left/right (horizontal movement), and up/down (vertical movement). Subsequently, the measured displacement was applied to patients with peri-optic tumors to evaluate the potential dosimetric effect of this motion.ResultsThe motion of ON followed a nearly conical shape. By average, the anterior end of ONs moved with 10.8 ± 2.2 mm horizontally and 9.3 ± 0.8 mm vertically, while posterior end has negligible displacement. For patients who underwent stereotactic radiotherapy to a peri-optic tumors, the movement of ON in this measured range introduced non-negligible dosimetric effect.ConclusionThe range of motion of the anterior portions of the optic nerves is on the order of centimeters, which may need to be considered with extra attention during radiation therapy in treating peri-optic lesions.

Water-soluble Cu-In-Zn-S quantum dots (CIZS QDs) with orange fluorescence have been synthesized with a glutathione (GSH) as stabilizer via facile a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimal reaction conditions of CIZS QDs including temperature, time, pH, and the molar ratios of precursors were studied. TEM results indicate that the aqueous-dispersible CIZS QDs are quasi-spherical, and the average diameters are 3.76 nm with excellent fluorescent stability. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of CIZS QDs was investigated by the microcalorimetry combining with TEM and the IC50 was 10.2 μM. CIZS QDs showed a promising perspective in applications such as a fluorescent probe for bioimaging and biolabeling due to the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the CIZS QDs can distinguish Pb2+ ion from other ions, offering great potentials in lead ion determination in drinking water. According to the results of UV, XRD, FL, PL, and ITC methods, the mechanism of CIZS QDs-Pb2+ assay is due to hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces in the formation of Pb2+ and CIZS QDs.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study is to independently compare the performance of the inverse planning algorithm utilized in Gamma Knife (GK) Lightning Treatment Planning System (TPS) to manual forward planning, between experienced and inexperienced users, for different types of targets.Materials and MethodsForty patients treated with GK stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for pituitary adenoma (PA), vestibular schwannoma (VS), post-operative brain metastases (pBM), and intact brain metastases (iBM) were randomly selected, ten for each site. Three inversely optimized plans were generated for each case by two experienced planners (OptExp1 and OptExp2) and a novice planner (OptNov) using GK Lightning TPS. For each treatment site, the Gradient Index (GI), the Paddick Conformity Index (PCI), the prescription percentage, the scaled beam-on time (sBOT), the number of shots used, and dosimetric metrics to OARs were compared first between the inversely optimized plans and the manually generated clinical plans, and then among the inversely optimized plans. Statistical analyses were performed using the Student’s t-test and the ANOVA followed by the post-hoc Tukey tests.ResultsThe GI for the inversely optimized plans significantly outperformed the clinical plans for all sites. PCIs were similar between the inversely optimized and clinical plans for PA and VS, but were significantly improved in the inversely optimized plans for iBM and pBM. There were no significant differences in the sBOT between the inversely optimized and clinical plans, except for the PA cases. No significant differences were observed in dosimetric metrics, except for lower brain V12Gy and PTV D98% in the inversely optimized plans for iBM. There were no noticeable differences in plan qualities among the inversely optimized plans created by the novice and experienced planners.ConclusionInverse planning in GK Lightning TPS produces GK SRS plans at least equivalent in plan quality and similar in sBOT compared to manual forward planning in this independent validation study. The automatic workflow of inversed planning ensures a consistent plan quality regardless of a planner’s experience.

ObjectivesThe beam output of a double scattering proton system varies for each combination of beam option, range, and modulation and therefore is difficult to be accurately modeled by the treatment planning system (TPS). This study aims to design an empirical method using the analytical and machine learning (ML) models to estimate proton output in a double scattering proton system.Materials and MethodsThree analytical models using polynomial, linear, and logarithm–polynomial equations were generated on a training dataset consisting of 1,544 clinical measurements to estimate proton output for each option. Meanwhile, three ML models using Gaussian process regression (GPR) with exponential kernel, squared exponential kernel, and rational quadratic kernel were also created for all options combined. The accuracy of each model was validated against 241 additional clinical measurements as the testing dataset. Two most robust models were selected, and the minimum number of samples needed for either model to achieve sufficient accuracy ( ± 3%) was determined by evaluating the mean average percentage error (MAPE) with increasing sample number. The differences between the estimated outputs using the two models were also compared for 1,000 proton beams with a randomly generated range, and modulation for each option.ResultsThe polynomial model and the ML GPR model with exponential kernel yielded the most accurate estimations with less than 3% deviation from the measured outputs. At least 20 samples of each option were needed to build the polynomial model with less than 1% MAPE, whereas at least a total of 400 samples were needed for all beam options to build the ML GPR model with exponential kernel to achieve comparable accuracy. The two independent models agreed with less than 2% deviation using the testing dataset.ConclusionThe polynomial model and the ML GPR model with exponential kernel were built for proton output estimation with less than 3% deviations from the measurements. They can be used as an independent output prediction tool for a double scattering proton beam and a secondary output check tool for a cross check between themselves.

Earthquakes often cause bridges to vibrate to different degrees; moreover, in the case of poor road conditions, the vibration amplitude of bridges caused by vehicles often exceeds a reasonable range, thus causing different degrees of damage to bridges. Therefore, this article studies the vibration reduction effect of the pounding tuned mass dampers (PTMD) on long-span continuous bridges under earthquake and vehicle loads. The PTMD used in this study can reduce the vibration in both lateral and vertical directions. The PTMD provides a stronger vibration dampening effect compared to the TMD since it increases collision to use energy. The LS-DYNA software is used for numerical modeling to optimize the parameters of the PTMD and to determine the size and installation position of the PTMD. Then, the bridge is subjected to two recorded ground motions, and the bridge response with and without the PTMD is compared and analyzed, which shows how PTMD might lessen bridge vibration in its transverse direction. To assess how efficiently the PTMD dampens vibrations induced by vehicle loads on bridges, a vehicle/bridge/PTMD system is simulated using a refined vehicle model. The findings demonstrate that the PTMD may significantly lessen the bridge’s lateral and vertical vibration while enhancing driving comfort. Thus, this research study is of great significance for vertical and lateral vibration control of long-span continuous girder bridges.

This paper develops a distributed voltage regulation scheme for high Photovoltaic (PV) penetrated distribution networks by utilizing battery energy storage (BES) units. In this study, multiple BES units form a multi-agent network, in which each BES unit acts as an individual agent and can communicate with its neighbors to perform the distribution network's voltage regulation in a cooperative manner. To cope with the uncertainties of PV power and load demand, a receding horizon-based approach is proposed, where BES control decisions for regulating bus voltages are updated with the update of the system's operational conditions (PV power, load, etc.). An efficient solving method - Distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers Algorithm (D-ADMM) is applied to solve the proposed model under a colored network, where the BES agents with the same color synchronously update their states. Case studies are conducted on modified IEEE benchmark systems to validate the performance of the proposed method.

Stereoscopic display based on Virtual Reality (VR) can facilitate clinicians observing 3 D anatomical models with the depth cue which lets them understand the spatial relationship between different anatomical structures intuitively. However, there are few input devices available in the sterile field of the operating room for controlling 3 D anatomical models. This paper presents a cost-effective VR application for stereo display of 3 D anatomical models with non-contact interaction. The system is integrated with hand gesture interaction and voice interaction to achieve non-contact interaction. Hand gesture interaction is based on Leap Motion. Voice interaction is implemented based on Bing Speech for English language and Aitalk for Chinese language. A local database is designed to record the anatomical terminologies organized in a tree structure, and provided to the speech recognition engine for querying these uncommon words. Ten participants were asked to practice the proposed system and compare it with the common interactive manners. The results show that our system is more efficient than the common interactive manner and prove the feasibility and practicability of the proposed system used in the sterile field.

Understanding the transmission process is crucial for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 spread. This paper contributes to the COVID-19 knowledge by analyzing the incubation period, the transmission rate from close contact to infection, and the properties of multiple-generation transmission. The data regarding these parameters are extracted from a detailed line-list database of 9,120 cases reported in mainland China from January 15 to February 29, 2020. The incubation period of COVID-19 has a mean, median, and mode of 7.83, 7, and 5 days, and, in 12.5% of cases, more than 14 days. The number of close contacts for these cases during the incubation period and a few days before hospitalization follows a log-normal distribution, which may lead to super-spreading events. The disease transmission rate from close contact roughly decreases in line with the number of close contacts with median 0.13. The average secondary cases are 2.10, 1.35, and 2.2 for the first, second, and third generations conditioned on at least one offspring. However, the ratio of no further spread in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations are 26.2, 93.9, and 90.7%, respectively. Moreover, the conditioned reproduction number in the second generation is geometrically distributed. Our findings suggest that, in order to effectively control the pandemic, prevention measures, such as social distancing, wearing masks, and isolating from close contacts, would be the most important and least costly measures.

The reinforced soil-retaining wall has been widely used in coastal projects, and the dry-wet cycles influence the mechanical properties of the reinforced soil interface. This study conducts macro-micro tests and selects four different water content samples of reinforced soil with five types of overburden pressure conditions and three sets of dry-wet cycles, with a total of 60 working conditions. The pull-out test was used to study the mechanical properties of the reinforced soil interface. The scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microscopic characterization of the particles under different working conditions. Through the analysis of the experimental results, we can draw the conclusion as follows. (1) The friction coefficient of the reinforced soil interface decreases with the increase of the number of dry and wet cycles. (2) The apparent cohesion of soil-reinforcement interface decreases with the increase of the number of dry-wet cycles. After 30 dry-wet cycles, the apparent cohesion of the soil-reinforcement interface with water content of 14% is the maximum 5.91 kPa. The variation law of cohesion derived from microstructure analysis conforms to the laws and conclusions obtained by the experiment. (3) The shear stress of the reinforced soil is linearly related to the normal stress, which is in accordance with Coulomb’s law.

In this study, the failure mode of flexible reinforced soil slopes under earthquake action was investigated by shaking table tests. The distribution law of a potential failure surface of a flexible no-faceplate reinforced soil slope under earthquake action was obtained based on the analysis results. A simplified trilinear failure surface suitable for flexible reinforced soil slopes without faceplate was proposed. Subsequently, based on the upper-bound theorem of limit analysis, we derived the formula for calculating the yield seismic acceleration coefficient of a flexible no-faceplate reinforced soil slope under a seismic load. The main parameters that affect its seismic performance were determined. The flexible geogrid reverse-packed reinforced earth structure can effectively limit the fracture of a slope body and improve the stability of the slope. This provides a theoretical basis for facilitating the engineering of flexible reinforced soil slopes.

Data centers have become a prevalent infrastructure to host a large number of services, such as social networking and Web search, which generally have rigorous delay requirements. Even a slight increase in delay can seriously affect the performance of applications. Therefore, there have been several efforts focusing on minimizing the flow completion time (FCT) to meet the delay requirements, such as ICTCP, which adjusts the receive window according to the available bandwidth and DCTCP that uses ECN to provide the feedback to end hosts in mixing workloads. However, both approaches are only for a specific scene and cannot effectively solve the problem that packets losses lead to timeouts due to TCP incast. Moreover, they all use the fair-share mechanism, which causes the increasing of the FCT for small flows, when background flows pour into the network. For example, background flows cause the increasing(≈ 5ms) of the FCT for the ICTCP in an incast experiment. To solve these problems, we propose a priority-driven congestion control algorithm, PTCP, which can effectively avoid the incast problem and improve the FCT in mixing workloads. The PTCP leverages the priority to adjust the receive window and control the interval time of ACK. To evaluate the PTCP, we conduct extensive experiments in NS-2. The simulation results show that the PTCP outperforms greatly previous schemes both in the incast scenario and mixing workloads.

Cordyceps chanhua is an important cordycipitoid mushroom widely used in Asia and beyond. Beauvericin (BEA), one of the bioactive compounds of C. chanhua, has attracted much attention because of its medicinal value and food safety risk. In order to clear up the relationship between oxidative stress and BEA synthesis, we investigated the impact of H2O2-induced oxidative stress on the secondary metabolism of C. chanhua using untargeted metabolomics and a transcript profiling approach. Metabolic profiling of C. chanhua mycelia found that in total, 73 differential metabolites were identified, including organic acids, phospholipids, and non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs), especially the content of BEA, increasing 13-fold under oxidative stress treatment. Combining transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we found that the genes and metabolites associated with the NRP metabolism, especially the BEA biosynthesis, were highly significantly enriched under H2O2-induced stress, which indicated that the BEA metabolism might be positive in the resistance of C. chanhua to oxidative stress. These results not only aid in better understanding of the resistance mechanisms of C. chanhua against oxidative stress but also might be helpful for molecular breeding of C. chanhua with low BEA content.

Golay complementary waveforms are, by definition, able to generate narrow pulses with low sidelobes via coherent signal processing. However, while an ideal impulse can be obtained for target returns at zero-Doppler, significant sidelobes are observed at nonzero Doppler shifts. In this paper, a Generalized Binominal Design (GBD) procedure is proposed for the waveforms consisting of complementary sets in an attempt to reduce the Doppler-induced sidelobes. Our theoretical analysis as well as simulation results show that the proposed approach performs as good as existing Binominal Design method used for sidelobe suppression with Golay complementary waveforms and can also achieve around 28% enhancement on the Doppler resolution, with an acceptable loss in peak to peak-sidelobe ratio (PPSR).

Background normalization algorithms attempt to suppress the ambient and self-noise during the measurements of sonar, which enhance the detection performance and the display effect of weak signals. Conventional background normalization methods are usually sensitive to the accuracy of prior set filtering interval and threshold, while significant noise is still detected in low frequency. In this paper, an improved background normalization algorithm is proposed by thresholding the processing interval between several local peak values and local valley values. Compared to the existing scenarios, the proposed approach automatically calculates the filtering interval and threshold, with substantial resilience to the noise level in low frequency. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm.

When the deceptive targets are in the ambiguious range bin but are received at the same range gate with the desired target by the array, the traditional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is not able to discriminate between them. Based on the unique range-dependent beampattern of the frequency diverse array (FDA)-MIMO radar, we propose a novel robust mainlobe deceptive target suppression method based on covariance matrix reconstruction to form nulls at the frequency points of the transmit–receive domain where deceptive targets are located. First, the proposed method collects the deceptive targets and noise information in the transmit–receive frequency domain to reconstruct the jammer-noise covariance matrix (JNCM). Then, the covariance matrix of the desired target is constructed in the desired target region, which is assumed to already be known. The transmit–receive steering vector (SV) of the desired target is estimated to be the dominant eigenvector of the desired target covariance matrix. Finally, the weighting vector of the receive beamformer is calculated by combining the reconstructed JNCM and the estimated desired target SV. By implementing the weighting vector at the receiving end, the deceptive targets can be effectively suppressed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust to SV mismatches and provides a signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratio (SJNR) output that is close to the optimal.

The increase in network applications diversity and different service quality requirements lead to service differentiation, making it more important than ever. In Wide Area Network (WAN), the non-responsive Long-Term Fast (LTF) flows are the main contributors to network congestion. Therefore, detecting and suppressing non-responsive LTF flows represent one of the key points for providing data transmission with controllable delay and service differentiation. However, the existing single-queue management algorithms are designed to serve only a small number of applications with similar requirements (low latency, high throughput, etc.). The lack of mechanisms to distinguish different traffic makes it difficult to implement differentiated services. This paper proposes an active queue management scheme, namely, SQM-LRU, which realizes service differentiation based on Shadow Queue (SQ) and improved Least-Recently-Used (LRU) strategy. The algorithm consists of three essential components: First, the flow detection module is based on the SQ and improved LRU. This module is used to detect non-responsive LTF flows. Second, different flows will be put into corresponding high or low priority sub-queues depending on the flow detection results. Third, the dual-queue adopts CoDel and RED, respectively, to manage packets. SQM-LRU intends to satisfy the stringent delay requirements of responsive flow while maximizing the throughput of non-responsive LTF flow. Our simulation results show that SQM-LRU outperforms traditional solutions with significant improvement in flow detection and reduces the delay, jitter, and Flow Completion Time (FCT) of responsive flow. As a result, it reduced the FCT by up to 50% and attained 95% of the link utilization. Additionally, the low overhead and the operations incur O(1) cost per packet, making it practical for the real network.

This study investigated the effect of dietary myo-inositol (MI) on alleviating the adverse effect of the high carbohydrate diet in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Six diets contained either low carbohydrate (LC 30%) or high carbohydrate (HC 45%) with three levels of MI supplementation (0, 400 and 1200 mg/kg diet) to each level of the carbohydrate diet. After an 8-week trial, the fish fed 400 mg/kg MI under HC levels had the highest weight gain and fatness, but the fish fed 1200 mg/kg MI had the lowest hepatosomatic index, visceral index and crude lipid in the HC group. The diet of 1200 mg/kg MI significantly decreased triglyceride content in the serum and liver compared with those fed the MI supplemented diets regardless of carbohydrate levels. Dietary MI decreased triglyceride accumulation in the liver irrespective of carbohydrate levels. The content of malondialdehyde decreased with increasing dietary MI at both carbohydrate levels. Fish fed 1200 mg/kg MI had the highest glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, aspartate aminotransferase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase activities. The HC diet increased the mRNA expression of key genes involved in lipid synthesis (DGAT, SREBP, FAS) in the fish fed the diet without MI supplementation. Dietary MI significantly under expressed fatty acid synthetase in fish fed the HC diets. Moreover, the mRNA expression of genes related to lipid catabolism (CPT, ATGL, PPAR-α) was significantly up-regulated with the increase of dietary MI levels despite dietary carbohydrate levels. The gene expressions of gluconeogenesis, glycolysis and MI biosynthesis were significantly down-regulated, while the expression of the pentose phosphate pathway was up-regulated with the increase of MI levels. This study indicates that HC diets can interrupt normal lipid metabolism and tend to form a fatty liver in fish. Dietary MI supplement can alleviate lipid accumulation in the liver by diverging some glucose metabolism into the pentose phosphate pathway and enhance the antioxidant capacity in O. niloticus.

Intraseasonal oscillation of the evaporation duct, lasting 30–60 days, has been identified over the South China Sea (SCS) summer monsoon region based on multiple reanalyses and observational data. The boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) causes anomalies at the air–sea boundary and thus plays a dominant role in modulating the variation of the evaporation duct. The height and strength of the duct enhance/suppress during the negative/positive phase of the BSISO over the SCS. This results from the fact that active BSISO convection reduces solar radiation reaching the sea surface by increasing cumulus cloud cover, whereupon precipitation and water vapor transported by the enhanced southwest jet increase humidity over the air–sea boundary. Reduced air–sea temperatures and humidity differences lead to a weaker evaporation duct. Usually, the temporal evolution of the evaporation duct lags 2–4 days behind the BSISO, with the center of evaporation duct anomalies farther south than the BSISO. Simulated electromagnetic fields substantively influence the condition of the evaporation duct, with obvious over-the-horizon and radar blind spot effects in the typical negative phase of the BSISO, which is very different from standard atmospheric conditions.

In this paper, a new robust adaptive beamforming method is proposed in order to improve the robustness against steering vector (SV) mismatches that arise from multiple types of array errors. First, the sub-array technique is applied in order to obtain the decoupled sample covariance matrix (DSCM), in which the auxiliary sensors are selected to decouple the array. The decoupled interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (DINCM) is reconstructed with the estimated interference SV and maximum eigenvalue of the DSCM. Furthermore, the desired signal SV is estimated as the corresponding eigenvector determined by the correlation coefficients of the assumed SV and eigenvectors. Finally, the optimal weighting vector is obtained by combining the reconstructed DINCM and the estimated desired signal SV. Our simulation results show significant signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) enhancement of the proposed method over existing methods under multiple types of array errors.

This paper proposes a beamforming method in the presence of coherent multipath arrivals at the array. The proposed method avoids the prior knowledge or estimation of the directions of arrival (DOAs) of the direct path signal and the multipath signals. The interferences are divided into two groups based on their powers and the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) is reconstructed through the doubly covariance matrix reconstruction concept. The composite steering vector (CSV) that accounts for the direct path signal and multipath signals is estimated as the principal eigenvector of the sample covariance matrix with interferences and noise removed. The optimal weight vector is finally computed using the INCM and the CSV. The proposed method involves no spatial smoothing and avoids reduction in the degree of freedom. Simulation results demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed method.

The issues of reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere, sustainably utilizing natural mineral resources, and dealing with industrial waste offer challenging opportunities for sustainable development in energy and the environment. The latest advances in CO2 mineralization technology involving natural minerals and industrial waste are summarized in this paper, with great emphasis on the advancement of fundamental science, economic evaluation, and engineering applications. We discuss several leading large-scale CO2 mineralization methodologies from a technical and engineering-science perspective. For each technology option, we give an overview of the technical parameters, reaction pathway, reactivity, procedural scheme, and laboratorial and pilot devices. Furthermore, we present a discussion of each technology based on experimental results and the literature. Finally, current gaps in knowledge are identified in the conclusion, and an overview of the challenges and opportunities for future research in this field is provided.

Three-dimensional (3D) object detection is an important research in 3D computer vision with significant applications in many fields, such as automatic driving, robotics, and human−computer interaction. However, the low precision is an urgent problem in the field of 3D object detection. To solve it, we present a framework for 3D object detection in point cloud. To be specific, a designed Backbone Network is used to make fusion of low-level features and high-level features, which makes full use of various information advantages. Moreover, the two-dimensional (2D) Generalized Intersection over Union is extended to 3D use as part of the loss function in our framework. Empirical experiments of Car, Cyclist, and Pedestrian detection have been conducted respectively on the KITTI benchmark. Experimental results with average precision (AP) have shown the effectiveness of the proposed network.

In this study, the isothermal sections of the Co-Re-Ta ternary system at 1100, 1200, and 1300 °C have been experimentally investigated by means of electron probe microanalysis and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated the following: (1) The solid solubilities of the λ3, (εCo, Re), χ-Re7Ta3, and bcc-(Ta) phases were large and changed very little from 1100 to 1300 °C; (2) more interestingly, the λ2 phase, with a very limited solubility of Re, was surrounded by the λ3 phase; (3) the solubility of Re for the μ-Co6Ta7 phase increased slowly from 1100 to 1300 °C. These experimental results will be useful for Co-based high-temperature alloys, especially as a supplement for thermodynamic databases.

Ethylene glycol (EG)-based lubricant was prepared with dissolved organosolv lignin from birch wood (BL) and softwood (SL) biomass. The effects of different lignin types on the rheological, thermal, and tribological properties of the lignin/EG lubricants were comprehensively investigated by various characterization techniques. Dissolving organosolv lignin in EG results in outstanding lubricating properties. Specifically, the wear volume of the disc by EG-44BL is only 8.9% of that lubricated by pure EG. The enhanced anti-wear property of the EG/lignin system could be attributed to the formation of a robust lubrication film and the strong adhesion of the lubricant on the contacting metal surface due to the presence of a dense hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) network. The lubricating performance of EG-BL outperforms EG-SL, which could be attributed to the denser H-bonding sites in BL and its broader molecular weight distribution. The disc wear loss of EG-44BL is only 45.7% of that lubricated by EG-44SL. Overall, H-bonding is the major contributor to the different tribological properties of BL and SL in EG-based lubricants.

Golay complementary waveforms can, in theory, yield radar returns of high range resolution with essentially zero sidelobes. In practice, when deployed conventionally, while high signal-to-noise ratios can be achieved for static target detection, significant range sidelobes are generated by target returns of nonzero Doppler causing unreliable detection. We consider signal processing techniques using Golay complementary waveforms to improve radar detection performance in scenarios involving multiple nonzero Doppler targets. A signal processing procedure based on an existing, so called, Binomial Design algorithm that alters the transmission order of Golay complementary waveforms and weights the returns is proposed in an attempt to achieve an enhanced illumination performance. The procedure applies one of three proposed waveform transmission ordering algorithms, followed by a pointwise nonlinear processor combining the outputs of the Binomial Design algorithm and one of the ordering algorithms. The computational complexity of the Binomial Design algorithm and the three ordering algorithms are compared, and a statistical analysis of the performance of the pointwise nonlinear processing is given. Estimation of the areas in the Delay–Doppler map occupied by significant range sidelobes for given targets are also discussed. Numerical simulations for the comparison of the performances of the Binomial Design algorithm and the three ordering algorithms are presented for both fixed and randomized target locations. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed signal processing procedure has a better detection performance in terms of lower sidelobes and higher Doppler resolution in the presence of multiple nonzero Doppler targets compared to existing methods.

We propose an alternative waveform scheme built on mutually-orthogonal complementary sets for a distributed multistatic radar. Our analysis and simulation show a reduced frequency band requirement for signal separation between antennas with centralized signal processing using the same carrier frequency. While the scheme can tolerate fluctuations of carrier frequencies and phases, range sidelobes arise when carrier frequencies between antennas are significantly different.

To improve performance of machine components, lubrication is one of the most important factors. Especially for use in extreme environments, researchers look for other solutions rather than common lubricant base stocks like mineral oils or vegetable oils. One such example is ionic liquids. Ionic liquids have been defined as molten salts with melting points below 100 ∘ C that are entirely ionic in nature, comprising both cationic and anionic species. The industrial use of ionic liquids is mostly as solvents, electrolytes, extractants and catalysts. In tribological applications, ionic liquids are mainly studied in boundary lubrication and in pure sliding contacts. In this work, the elastohydrodynamic performance of a bio-based, non-corrosive, [choline][l-proline] ionic liquid is evaluated in terms of pressure-viscosity response, film forming capability and friction. The results show a pressure-viscosity coefficient of below 8 GPa − 1 at 25 ∘ C, among the lowest reported for any ionic liquid. The ionic liquid generated up to 70% lower friction than a reference paraffin oil with a calculated difference in film thickness of 11%. It was also shown that this ionic liquid is very hygroscopic, which is believed to explain part of the low friction results, but also has to be considered in practical applications since the water content will influence the properties and thus the performance of the lubricant.
