Abstract Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is known for its zero-strain characteristic in electrochemical applications, making it a suitable material for fast-charging applications. Here, we systematically studied the quasi-equilibrium and non-equilibrium lithium-ion transportation kinetics in LTO thin-film electrodes, across a range of scales from the crystal lattice to the microstructured electrodes. At the crystal lattice scale, during the non-equilibrium lithiation process, lithium ions are dispersedly embedded into the 16c position, resulting in more 8a → 16c migration compared with the quasi-equilibrium lithiation, and forming numerous fast lithium diffusion channels inside the LTO lattice. At the microstructural electrode scale, optical spectrum characterizations supported the “nano-filaments” lithiation model in polycrystalline LTO thin-film electrodes during the lithiation process. Our results reveal the patterns of lithium migration and distribution within the LTO thin film electrode under the non-equilibrium and quasi-equilibrium lithiation process, offering profound insights into the potential optimization strategies for enhancing the performance of fast-charging thin film batteries.

Introduction Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are two chronic autoimmune diseases. To date, there have been few reports on the overlap between SS and RA in China, especially regarding correlated acute renal failure cases. Material and methods To provide a reference for our clinical peers, this article presents the case report of an elderly female patient who was diagnosed with acute renal failure caused by SS and RA overlap syndrome. Results We also provide a relevant analysis of SS and RA overlap syndrome treatment. Conclusions We also provide a relevant analysis of SS and RA overlap syndrome treatment.

Large deformation of sand due to soil liquefaction is a major cause for seismic damage. In this study, the mechanisms and modeling of large post-liquefaction deformation of sand considering the significant influence of water absorption in shearing and seismic wave conditions. Assessment of case histories from past earthquakes and review of existing studies highlight the importance of the two factors. Based on the micro and macro scale mechanisms for post-liquefaction shear deformation, the mechanism for water absorption in shearing after initial liquefaction is revealed. This is aided by novel designed constant water-absorption-rate shear tests. Water absorption in shearing can be classified into three types, including partial water absorption, complete water absorption, and compulsory water absorption. Under the influence of water absorption in shearing, even a strongly dilative sand under naturally drained conditions could experience instability and large shear deformation. The mechanism for amplification of post-liquefaction deformation under surface wave load is also explained via element tests and theoretical analysis. This shows that surface wave–shear wave coupling can induce asymmetrical force and resistance in sand, resulting in asymmetrical accumulation of deformation, which is amplified by liquefaction. A constitutive model, referred to as CycLiq, is formulated to capture the large deformation of sand considering water absorption in shearing and seismic wave conditions, along with its numerical implementation algorithm. The model is comprehensively calibrated based on various types of element tests and validated against centrifuge shaking table tests in the liquefaction experiments and analysis projects (LEAP). The model, along with various numerical analysis methods, is adopted in the successful simulation of water absorption in shearing and Rayleigh wave-shear wave coupling induced large liquefaction deformation. Furthermore, the model is applied to high-performance simulation for large-scale soil-structure interaction in liquefiable ground, including underground structures, dams, quay walls, and offshore wind turbines.

Abstract Background Skeletal muscle development plays a crucial role in yield and quality of pork; however, this process is influenced by various factors. In this study, we employed whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and transcriptome sequencing to comprehensively investigate the longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM), aiming to identify key genes that impact the growth and development of Duroc pigs with different average daily gains (ADGs). Results Eight pigs were selected and divided into two groups based on ADGs: H (774.89 g) group and L (658.77 g) group. Each pair of the H and L groups were half-siblings. The results of methylation sequencing revealed 2631 differentially methylated genes (DMGs) involved in metabolic processes, signalling, insulin secretion, and other biological activities. Furthermore, a joint analysis was conducted on these DMGs and the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) obtained from transcriptome sequencing of the same individual. This analysis identified 316 differentially methylated and differentially expressed genes (DMEGs), including 18 DMEGs in promoter regions and 294 DMEGs in gene body regions. Finally, LPAR1 and MEF2C were selected as candidate genes associated with muscle development. Bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP) and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT–PCR) revealed that the promoter region of LPAR1 exhibited significantly lower methylation levels (P < 0.05) and greater expression levels (P < 0.05) in the H group than in the L group. Additionally, hypermethylation was observed in the gene body region of MEF2C, as was a low expression level, in the H group (P < 0.05). Conclusions These results suggest that the differences in the ADGs of Duroc pigs fed the same diet may be influenced by the methylation levels and expression levels of genes related to skeletal muscle development.

Summary: Background: Understanding the impact of CYP2D6 metabolism on paroxetine, a widely used antidepressant, is essential for precision dosing. Methods: We conducted an 8-week, multi-center, single-drug, 2-week wash period prospective cohort study in 921 Chinese Han patients with depressive or anxiety disorders (ChiCTR2000038462). We performed CYP2D6 genotyping (single nucleotide variant and copy number variant) to derive the CYP2D6 activity score and evaluated paroxetine treatment outcomes including steady-state concentration, treatment efficacy, and adverse reaction. CYP2D6 metabolizer status was categorized into poor metabolizers (PMs), intermediate metabolizers (IMs), extensive metabolizers (EMs), and ultrarapid metabolizers (UMs). The influence of CYP2D6 metabolic phenotype on paroxetine treatment outcomes was examined using multiple regression analysis and cross-ethnic meta-analysis. The therapeutic reference range of paroxetine was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. Findings: After adjusting for demographic factors, the steady-state concentrations of paroxetine in PMs, IMs, and UMs were 2.50, 1.12, and 0.39 times that of EMs, with PM and UM effects being statistically significant (multiple linear regression, P = 0.03 and P = 0.04). Sex and ethnicity influenced the comparison between IMs and EMs. Moreover, poor efficacy of paroxetine was associated with UM, and a higher risk of developing adverse reactions was associated with lower CYP2D6 activity score. Lastly, cross-ethnic meta-analysis suggested dose adjustments for PMs, IMs, EMs, and UMs in the East Asian population to be 35%, 40%, 143%, and 241% of the manufacturer's recommended dose, and 62%, 68%, 131%, and 159% in the non-East Asian population. Interpretation: Our findings advocate for precision dosing based on the CYP2D6 metabolic phenotype, with sex and ethnicity being crucial considerations in this approach. The present work was related to synthesis of graphene (0, 1.25 and 2.5 %) incorporation in cobalt-zinc ferrites by using sol–gel auto combustions method. The face center cubic (FCC) crystal structure and crystallite size varies from 16 to 18 nm was examined by XRD analysis. While as the irregular, non-uniform and flake like surface morphology of cobalt zinc/graphene nanocomposite (Co-Zn-G NCs) were observed via SEM images. In addition, the phase identification and presence of different functional groups such as M−O (metal oxide), OH, C-C, C = O and C = C were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and FTIR analyses. Further, I-V two probe method was used to observed the resistivity decrease (7.5x 108 to 2.5x 106 ohm-cm) and conductivity increased (1.2x10-9 to 3.8x10-7S/cm) of Co-Zn-G NCs. After that the thermoelectric behavior of Co-Zn-G NCs indicated that due to increase the temperature then seebeck coefficient decrease as vice versa. The overall result shows that the 2.5 % graphene incorporation in Co-Zn ferrites expressed the excellent electrical and thermoelectric properties. In future the Co-Zn-G nanocomposite used for the development of temperature sensor, reduce eddy current loss and spintronic devices.

As for spintronic applications, all information is encoded in the spin degree of freedom, so the key issues are the high spin-polarization, large half-metallic (HM) bandgap, large magnetic moment and higher Curie temperature than room temperature. In this paper, we studied halogen based CsYZ2 (Y = V or Cr; Z = F, Cl, Br or I) full-Heusler alloys. Our study reveals that CsVF2, CsVCl2, CsVI2 and CsCrI2 alloys are all HM ferromagnets while remaining alloys exhibits magnetic semiconductor behavior. The electronic structures indicate that these alloys open very large bandgaps in the spin-down channel. Following the Slater-Pauling rule Mt=Zt-16, these alloys exhibit very large total magnetic moments Mt of 4.00 μBf.u. when Y = V and 5.00 μBf.u. when Y = Cr. The high Curie temperatures indicate these alloys are appropriate for spintronic applications at room temperature. Furthermore, the absorption coefficient α(ω) of the CsVF2 alloy is better from other alloys in the visible region. The maximum ZT = 0.7 is obtained for CsCrBr2 and is an ideal candidate for thermoelectric (TE) applications.

This paper provides a review of the implementation of different materials and how they have impacted the efficiency of solar cells. This work elaborates on all solar generation methods that have been developed in the past and covers disparate technologies that are being implemented in different generations. A review of the characterization and factors involved in these processes are also discussed briefly. Furthermore, the economic, environmental, and technical perspectives related to solar cells have also been expounded. This paper also provides some insights into potential research directions that can be pursued in the field of solar energy. Energy demands are increasing all over the world, and substantial amounts of fossil fuels are currently exhausted all over the world in order to meet those needs, which in turn contaminates our environment; moreover, non-renewable sources of energy are diminishing at higher rates as well. Solar energy is of prime importance in all renewable energy sources as the Sun shines at the Earth for 8 to 10 h on average. Thus, heat can be harnessed to generate electricity, but solar cells are not substantially efficient because the materials used in them are quite costly and waste a considerable amount of energy, mostly as heat, which subsequently reduces the efficiency of the cell and increases the overall price as well. These challenges can be dealt with by designing more efficient, economical systems of storage and manufacturing PV cells with high efficacy. Scientists and engineers are more inclined toward advanced technologies and material manipulation to enhance the efficiency of solar energy and reduce its cost. In this regard, substantial research is being carried out, especially on the structure of materials and advanced materials like nanomaterials and quantum dots. Due to their distinct electromechanical and material properties, carbon-based nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes, graphene, fullerene, and nanohybrids are being employed as the electrodes, transport layers, active layers, or intermediate (interfacial) layers of solar cells in this regard.

Laboratory tests on soil adopts simplified stress paths compared to real world counterparts due to mechanical limitations. This study investigates the deformation of granular material under combined principal stress value and orientation change in full 3D space using the discrete element method. Such stress paths are achieved by applying a 3D force line boundary condition on spherical granular material samples. Continuous cyclic tests with stress paths restricted in a fixed plane and in full 3D space, simulating a bidirectional seismic load event, are both conducted. The importance of taking both principal stress value and orientation change into consideration is highlighted. In the tests, the greatest deformation is observed under pure stress orientation change, while the smallest deformation is observed when the principal stress axes are fixed. The change of stress value and orientation in 3D is also shown to result in deformations different to those within a fixed plane. The origins of these differences are found to be associated with difference in shear modulus, dilatancy, and non-coaxiality at the macroscale, and particle contact and fabric anisotropy at the microscale.

The suction installation process for bucket foundations for offshore wind turbines (OWTs) can cause the formation of soil plug within the bucket, which can affect the seismic performance of the OWT. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the influence of soil plug on the seismic performance of OWT on bucket foundations. In this study, a comprehensive set of high-fidelity solid–fluid coupled dynamic numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the seismic response of bucket foundations with a focus on the influence of soil plug and its potential mitigation. The influence of different bucket models, seabed soil densities, seabed inclination and reinforcement types, as well as soil plug removal techniques, are investigated. The results clearly show that the existence of soil plug has a significant unfavorable influence on the seismic performance of OWT on bucket foundations, especially for wide bucket foundations in mildly inclined seabeds, and should be considered in seismic design. Reinforcement methods, such as the application of an inner compartments, outer wings and inner pile, can improve the seismic performance of OWT on bucket foundations, with the application of an inner compartment being the most effective. Soil plug removal can alleviate the negative influence of soil plug, and should be adopted when possible.

The moiré pattern restricts the electronic states of transition metal bilayers, thus extending the concept of the magic angle found in twisted bilayer graphene to semiconductors. Here, we have studied the electronic structure of the twisted bilayer WTe2 using first-principle calculations. Our result shows that a twist significantly changes the band structure, resulting in the bandgap engineering when the twisted bilayer of WTe2 is turning to a specific angle. The electronic structure is changed by the change of the twist angle. Interestingly, a semiconductor-to-metal phase transition is found at a twist angle of 15°. Our results provide a reference for the regulation of two-dimensional band structures. These results are important for understanding the electronic structure of twisted systems and for future applications in electronic devices.

Electronic structures of non-twisted and twisted WTe2/WSe2 heterojunction bilayers were investigated using first-principles calculations. Our results show that, for the twisted WTe2/WSe2 heterojunction bilayer, the bandgaps are all direct bandgaps, and the bandgap (K–K) increases significantly when the twist angle is from 0° to 10°. However, when the twist angle is from 11° to 14.2°, the bandgaps are all indirect bandgaps and the bandgap (G–K) significantly reduces. The band structure of the twisted WTe2/WSe2 heterojunction bilayer differs significantly from that of the non-twisted. Twisted WTe2/WSe2 heterojunction bilayers can be seen as a direct bandgap to an indirect bandgap conversion when turned to a certain angle. Interestingly, the bandgap of the WTe2/WSe2 heterojunction bilayer is very sensitive to the change in the twist angle. For example, when the twist angle is 10.5°, a maximum bandgap will appear. However, the minimum bandgap is 0.041 eV at 14.2°. Our findings have important guidance for device tuning of two-dimensional heterojunction materials.

Defects profoundly affect the magnetic, electronic structure and topological behaviour of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Here, we investigate the magnetic, structural stability and topological properties of different Te atomic sites in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator FeBi _2 Te _4 with Se substitution of the FM- z magnetic order. When Se replaces the outermost site of the septuple layer (the Te atomic layer connected by van der Waals bonds), the Se–Bi bond length formed with its nearest neighbour Bi is drastically shortened and the lattice constant and volume contract accordingly. We speculate that this defect-induced chemical bond enhancement is related to the strong electronegativity of Se over Te. In contrast, the system has lower formation energy, a more stable structure, and enhanced magnetic moment when Se replaces the Te atomic layer inside the septuple layer. Also, we reveal a variety of topological phase transitions due to substitution defects. FeBi _2 Te _4 is considered to belong to the $z_{2} \times z_{4}$ topological classification of higher-order topological insulators with z _4 = 2. The system after Se substitution can be transformed into Weyl semimetals, strong 3D topological insulators, and unknown topological materials without symmetry-base indicators, respectively.

Increased urbanisation, economic growth, and long-term climate variability have made both the UK and China more susceptible to urban and river flooding, putting people and property at increased risk. This paper presents a review of the current flooding challenges that are affecting the UK and China and the actions that each country is undertaking to tackle these problems. Particular emphases in this paper are laid on (1) learning from previous flooding events in the UK and China, and (2) which management methodologies are commonly used to reduce flood risk. The paper concludes with a strategic research plan suggested by the authors, together with proposed ways to overcome identified knowledge gaps in flood management. Recommendations briefly comprise the engagement of all stakeholders to ensure a proactive approach to land use planning, early warning systems, and water-sensitive urban design or redesign through more effective policy, multi-level flood models, and data driven models of water quantity and quality. Abstract We have investigated the effects of graphene intercalation on dielectric reliability of HfO2 for Ni/Gr/HfO2 interfaces, and the effects of graphene intercalation and interfacial atom vacancy on the effective work function (EWF) of Ni/Gr/HfO2 interfaces using first-principle calculation based on density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that graphene intercalation can improve dielectric reliability of HfO2 dielectric even for the interfaces having interfacial oxygen vacancy or a small amount carbon vacancy. Moreover, the calculated results indicate that, inserting graphene into Ni/HfO2 interface induces the EWF’s to decline, and controlling interfacial oxygen or carbon vacancy can effectively tune the EWF of Ni/Gr/HfO2 interface. Our work strongly suggests that the use of graphene synthesized into Ni/HfO2 interface is a very effective way to improve the interface quality, and controlling interfacial oxygen or carbon vacancy is also an attractive and promising way for modulating the EWF of Ni/Gr/HfO2 interfaces.

We investigate mechanical, structural and electronic properties of CO2 adsorbed graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) system under biaxial tensile strain via first-principles calculations. The results show that the stress of CO2 adsorbed g-C3N4 system increases and then decreases linearly with the increasing biaxial strain, reaching maximum at 0.12 strain. This is primarily caused by the plane N–C stretching of the g-C3N4. Furthermore, both the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) and Heyd- Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional (HSE06) band gaps show direct-indirect transitions under biaxial tensile strain and have the maximum also at 0.12 strain. It is found that there is large dipole transition matrix element around Γ point, leading high optical absorption coefficients of the deformed adsorption system, which would be of great use for the applications of new elastic nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices.

Suction caissons are widely used foundations in offshore engineering. The change in excess pore pressure and seepage field caused by penetration and suction significantly affects the soil resistance around the caisson wall and tip, and also affects the deformation of the soil within and adjacent to the caisson. This study uses Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) large deformation solid-fluid coupled FEM to investigate the changes in suction pressure and the seepage field during the process of the suction caisson installation in sand. A nonlinear Drucker-Prager model is used to model soil, while Coulomb friction is applied at the soil-caisson interface. The ALE solid-fluid coupled FEM is shown to be able to successfully simulate both jacked penetration and suction penetration caisson installation processes in sand observed in centrifuge tests. The difference in penetration resistance for jacked and suction installation is found to be caused by the seepage and excess pore pressure generated during the suction caisson installation, highlighting the importance of using solid-fluid coupled effective stress-based analysis to consider seepage in the evaluation of suction caisson penetration.

Abstract The Electronic structure of PbPdO2 with (002) and (211) preferred orientations were investigated using first-principles calculation. The calculated results indicate that, (002) and (211) orientations exhibit different electric field dependence of band-gap and carrier concentration. The small band gap and more sensitive electric field modulation of band gap were found in (002) orientation. Moreover, the electric field modulation of the resistivity up to 3–4 orders of magnitude is also observed in (002) slab, which reveals that origin of colossal electroresistance. Lastly, electric field modulation of band gap is well explained. This work should be significant for repeating the colossal electroresistance.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that the neuregulin 1 (NRG1)-ErbB4 signaling pathway may regulate the excitability of fast-spiking neurons in the frontal cortex and participate in primary epilepsy pathogenesis. However, the exact roles and mechanism for NRG1/ErbB4 in human symptomatic epilepsy are still unclear. Using fresh human symptomatic epilepsy tissues, we found that the protein levels of NRG1 and ErbB4 were significantly increased in the temporal cortex. In addition, NRG1-ErbB4 signaling suppressed phosphorylation of GluN2B at position 1472 by Src kinase, and decreased levels of phosphorylation level of GluN2B and Src were detected in human symptomatic epilepsy tissues. Our study revealed a critical role of the NRG1-ErbB4 signaling pathway in symptomatic epilepsy, which is different from that in primary epilepsy, and we propose that the NRG1-ErbB4 signaling may act as a homeostasis modulator that protects the brain from aggravation of epileptiform activity.

In this paper, topological quantum phase transition was reported in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi _2 Te _4 under pressure strain. Electronic and topological properties of the bulk anti-ferromagnetic MnBi _2 Te _4 were investigated by first-principles calculations. We found that the band structure of MnBi _2 Te _4 changes with the strain, resulting in a phase transition between metal and insulator. From the variation of charge-density distribution with strain, it was found that hydrostatic tensile strain is beneficial for increasing the interlayer spacing, thereby reducing the anti-ferromagnetic interaction between layers. On the contrary, the compressive strain promotes the strengthening of the bonding between the Te and Bi atomic layers. It was worth noting that the phase transition occurs at 2.12% strain when the band crossing is observed at Γ point, suggesting that the band gap has just closed. In addition, through the calculation of surface states, it is observed that, after the action of 2.12% strain, the bulk band gap of the system closes with the surface band gap reopens, achieving an intrinsic mechanism of strain modulation of the MnBi _2 Te _4 antiferromagnetic bulk structure to undergoes a topological quantum phase transition. Our results provide feasible guidance not only for pressure-strain engineering of MnBi _2 Te _4 experimentally but also for developing a meaningful strain-control mechanism for the electronic structures of other potential intrinsic magnetic insulators.

We report first-principles calculations on the structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of O2 molecule adsorption on different graphenes (including pristine graphene (G–O2), N(nitrogen)/B(boron)-doped graphene (G–N/B–O2), and defective graphene (G–D–O2)) under equibiaxial strain. Our calculation results reveal that G–D–O2 possesses the highest binding energy, indicating that it owns the highest stability. Moreover, the stabilities of the four structures are enhanced enormously by the compressive strain larger than 2%. In addition, the band gaps of G–O2 and G–D–O2 exhibit direct and indirect transitions. Our work aims to control the graphene-based structure and electronic properties via strain engineering, which will provide implications for the application of new elastic semiconductor devices.

Background: The radiochemotherapy regimen concomitantly employing temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT) 4 weeks after surgery, followed by 6 cycles of TMZ is a common treatment for glioblastoma (GBM). However, its median overall survival (OS) is only 14.6 months. This study was to explore the effectiveness and safety of early TMZ chemotherapy between surgery and chemoradiotherapy plus the standard concomitant radiochemotherapy regimen. Methods: A randomized, parallel group, open-label study of 99 newly diagnosed GBM patients was conducted at 10 independent Chinese neurosurgical departments from June 2008 to June 2012. Patients were treated with concomitant radiochemotherapy regimen plus early postsurgical temozolomide (early TMZ group) or standard concomitant radiochemotherapy regimen (control group). Overall response was assessed based on objective tumor assessments, administration of corticosteroid and neurological status test. Hematological, biochemical, laboratory, adverse event (AE), and neurological condition were measured for 24 months of follow-up. The primary efficacy endpoint of this study was overall survival (OS). The secondary endpoint was progression free survival (PFS). Results: The median OS time in the early TMZ group was 17.6 months, compared with 13.2 months in the control group (log-rank test P = 0.021). In addition, the OS rate in the early TMZ group was higher at 6, 12, and 18 months than in the control group, respectively (P < 0.05). The median PFS time was 8.7 months in the early TMZ group and 10.4 months in the control group (log-rank test P = 0.695). AEs occurred in 29 (55.8%) and 31(73.8%) patients respectively in early and control groups, including nausea (15.4% vs. 33.3%), vomiting (7.7% vs. 28.6%), fever (7.7% vs. 11.9%), and headache (3.8% vs. 23.8%). Only 30.8% and 33.3% were drug-related, respectively. Conclusions: Addition of TMZ chemotherapy in the early break of the standard concomitant radiochemotherapy regimen was well tolerated and significantly improved the OS of the GBM patients, compared with standard concomitant radiochemotherapy regimen. However, a larger randomized trial is warranted to verify these results.

Electronic structure and corresponding electrical properties of PbPdO2 and PbPd0.75Co0.25O2 ultrathin slabs with (002) preferred orientation were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. The calculated results revealed the strain induced evidently the changes of band structure and carrier concentration in both slabs. It was also found that PbPdO2 and PbPd0.75Co0.25O2 ultrathin slabs exhibited evident differences in the external strain dependence of the band gap and charge carrier concentration, which was strongly dependent on bond angle and bond length induced by in-plane anisotropy strain. Interestingly, the carrier concentration of the PbPd0.75Co0.25O2 slab could increase up to 5–6 orders of magnitude with the help of external strain, which could explain the potential mechanism behind the observed colossal strain-induced electrical behaviors. This work demonstrated that the influence of the doping effect in the case of PbPdO2 could be a potentially fruitful approach for the development of promising piezoresistive materials.

To characterize the ?-lactam resistance in veterinary clinical isolates of Haemophilus parasuis, 115 isolates were examined for the ?-lactam resistance, the possession of ?-lactamase, and the presence of ?-lactamase genes. The genetic relationship among isolates was evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Overall, the commonly detected resistance phenotypes were resistant to ampicillin (26.09%), penicillin (22.61%), amoxicillin (21.74%), cefazolin (14.78%), cefaclor (12.17%), and cefotaxime (6.96%). These strains showed high minimal inhibitory concentration (MICs) to oxacillin. 20.87% strains produced ?-lactamase, and 4.35% strains showed extended-spectrum b-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype. Moreover, 19 strains harboured bla genes including TEM-1 (n=5), TEM-116 (n=10), and ROB-1 (n=5). Significantly, one strain possessed both TEM-1 and ROB-1, and displayed resistance to cefotaxime (MIC=8 mg L-1). The epidemiological analysis of PFGE revealed high genetic diversity among bla-positive isolates. This work shows that TEM- and ROB-type ?-lactamases are prevalent in H. parasuis isolates in China.

The Li+ diffusion coefficients in Li+-adsorbed graphene systems were determined by combining first-principle calculations based on density functional theory with Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The calculated results indicate that the interactions between Li ions have a very important influence on lithium diffusion. Based on energy barriers directly obtained from first-principle calculations for single-Li+ and two-Li+ adsorbed systems, a new equation predicting energy barriers with more than two Li ions was deduced. Furthermore, it is found that the temperature dependence of Li+ diffusion coefficients fits well to the Arrhenius equation, rather than meeting the equation from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy applied to estimate experimental diffusion coefficients. Moreover, the calculated results also reveal that Li+ concentration dependence of diffusion coefficients roughly fits to the equation from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a low concentration region; however, it seriously deviates from the equation in a high concentration region. So, the equation from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique could not be simply used to estimate the Li+ diffusion coefficient for all Li+-adsorbed graphene systems with various Li+ concentrations. Our work suggests that interactions between Li ions, and among Li ion and host atoms will influence the Li+ diffusion, which determines that the Li+ intercalation dependence of Li+ diffusion coefficient should be changed and complex.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stent-assisted coiling was initially invented for wide-neck aneurysms, but is now used for smaller berry aneurysms. The aim of this study was to compare the safety and efficiency of stent-assisted coiling with conventional coiling in treatment of intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: A meta-analysis of studies that compared stent-assisted coiling with coiling only was conducted by searching English literatures via Pubmed, Medline and Cochrane Library databases without restricting the publication year. The primary outcomes in this study were immediate occlusion, progressive thrombosis rate, all-complication rate and angiographic recurrence. The secondary outcomes examined were packing density, mortality, permanent complication and thromboembolic complication rate. RESULTS: Ten retrospective cohort studies were included. There is currently only one unfinished randomized study. Although the stent-assisted coiling group tended to show a lower initial occlusion rate than that of the coiling-only group (57.6% versus 68.7%; OR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.30-1.44; P = 0.30), it achieved a significantly higher progressive thrombosis rate during follow up compared to that of the coiling only group (37.5% versus 19.4%; OR, 2.75; 95% CI, 1.95-3.86; P

Reduction of glutamine synthetase (GS) function is closely related to established epilepsy, but little is known regarding its role in epileptogenesis. The present study aimed to elucidate the functional changes of GS in the brain and its involvement in epileptogenesis using the amygdala kindling model of epilepsy induced by daily electrical stimulation of basolateral amygdala in rats. Both expression and activity of GS in the ipsilateral dentate gyrus (DG) were upregulated when kindled seizures progressed to stage 4. A single dose of L-methionine sulfoximine (MSO, in 2 µl), a selective GS inhibitor, was administered into the ipsilateral DG on the third day following the first stage 3 seizure (just before GS was upregulated). It was found that low doses of MSO (5 or 10 µg) significantly and dose-dependently reduced the severity of and susceptibility to evoked seizures, whereas MSO at a high dose (20 µg) aggravated kindled seizures. In animals that seizure acquisition had been successfully suppressed with 10 µg MSO, GS upregulation reoccurred when seizures re-progressed to stage 4 and re-administration of 10 µg MSO consistently reduced the seizures. GLN at a dose of 1.5 µg abolished the alleviative effect of 10 µg MSO and deleterious effect of 20 µg MSO on kindled seizures. Moreover, appropriate artificial microRNA interference (1 and 1.5×10(6) TU/2 µl) of GS expression in the ipsilateral DG also inhibited seizure progression. In addition, a transient increase of GS expression and activity in the cortex was also observed during epileptogenesis evoked by pentylenetetrazole kindling. These results strongly suggest that a transient and region-specific upregulation of GS function occurs when epilepsy develops into a certain stage and eventually promotes the process of epileptogenesis. Inhibition of GS to an adequate degree and at an appropriate timing may be a potential therapeutic approach to interrupting epileptogenesis.

Haemophilus parasuis is the etiological agent of Glässer’s disease, which is characterised by fibrinous polyserositis, meningitis and polyarthritis, causing severe economic losses to the swine industry. In this study, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) test was developed to improve the specificity, facility and speed of diagnosis of H. parasuis isolates. The LAMP assay rapidly amplified the target gene within 50 min incubation at 63 °C in a laboratory water bath. The LAMP amplicon could be visualised directly in the reaction tubes following the addition of SYBR Green I dye. The detection limit of this LAMP method was 10 CFU/mL, which was 10 times more sensitive than the earlier 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test conducted by Oliveira, Galina and Pijoan (2001), and no cross-reactivity was observed from other non-H. parasuis strains. This LAMP test was evaluated further on 187 clinical specimens from pigs suspected of being infected with H. parasuis. Forty-three were found positive by bacterial isolation of H. parasuis, as well as by the 16S rRNA PCR and LAMP tests. The 43 H. parasuis isolates were classified into 9 serovars and had 37 genetic patterns when analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). This displayed that various H. parasuis serovars and genotypes were widely distributed in South China. Therefore, the speed, specificity and sensitivity of the LAMP test, the lack of a need for expensive equipment, and the visual readout showed great potential for a correct clinical diagnosis of H. parasuis in favour of controlling Glässer’s disease.
