Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) is an advanced analytical measurement technology combining Raman spectroscopy with Scanning Probe Microscopy, which can detect the molecular structure and chemical composition in micro-nano-scale. As an indispensable part, the micromotion system directly determines TERS spatial resolution. The existing multi-axis system is often composed of several single-axis nonlinear systems, which solves whole problems with a superposition idea of single-axis part. But the multi-axis crosstalk under an overall idea is not fully considered and will cause system uncooperative and even oscillational. Therefore, a multi-axis micromotion system in TERS and its correction method are proposed. The improved Duhem model, simple calculation without inversion, accurate matching and fast response, has been built for nonlinearity. And the feedforward decoupling method is designed for crosstalk, having a favorable multi-axis coordination, good error tracking and simplified controllers. Experimental results show that it can greatly correct the nonlinearity and crosstalk of multi-axis system simultaneously.

Maize yellow mosaic virus (MaYMV) hosted in various gramineous plants was assigned to the genus Polerovirus (family Luteoviridae) in 2018. However, little is known about its genetic diversity and population structure. In this study, 509 sugarcane leaf samples with mosaic symptoms were collected in 2017 to 2019 from eight sugarcane-growing provinces in China. Reverse-transcription PCR results revealed that four positive-sense RNA viruses were found to infect sugarcane, and the incidence of MaYMV among samples from Fujian, Sichuan, and Guangxi Provinces was 52.1, 9.8, and 2.5%, respectively. Based on 82 partial MaYMV sequences and 46 whole-genome sequences from different host plants, phylogenetic analysis revealed that MaYMV populations are very closely associated with their source geographical regions (China, Africa, and South America). Pairwise identity analysis showed significant variability in genome sequences among MaYMV isolates with genomic nucleotide identities of 91.1 to 99.9%. In addition to codon mutations, insertions or deletions also contributed to genetic variability in individual coding regions, especially in the readthrough protein (P3-P5 fusion protein). Low gene flow and significant genetic differentiation of MaYMV were observed among the three geographical populations, suggesting that environmental adaptation is an important evolutionary force that shapes the genetic structure of MaYMV. Genes in the MaYMV genome were subject to strong negative or purification selection during evolution, except for the movement protein (MP), which was under positive selection pressure. This finding suggests that the MP may play an important role in MaYMV evolution. Taken together, our findings provide basic information for the development of an integrated disease management strategy against MaYMV.

Enhanced Recovery after Surgery has been proven effective for patients with gastrointestinal cancer. But radical enhanced recovery could also lead to adverse clinical outcomes. Compared with reports on the estimation of successful implementation of enhanced recovery, studies on risk factors of enhanced recovery failure are still lacking. A retrospective analysis was carried out on 102 patients in ERAS who underwent elective colon cancer surgery. This study included 102 patients with colon cancer between 2015 and 2019, defining enhanced recovery failure as postoperative length of stay over 10 days, stay in ICU over 24 h after surgery, reoperation, death, or unplanned readmission within 30 days after surgery. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to explore potential risk factors of failure. Aged ≥ 75, open operation, number of drainage tube over 1, re-urethral catheterization, and Clavien-Dindo grade over 2 were associated with ERAS failure, according to univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that age ≥ 75 [OR 7.231; P = 0.009]; open operation (OR 3.599; P = 0.021); and number of drainage tube over 1 (OR 3.202; P = 0.020) were independent risk factors for ERAS failure. We found age ≥ 75, open operation, and number of drainage tube over 1 are independent risk factors associated with ERAS failure after colon cancer surgery.

RNA silencing is one of the conserved antiviral mechanisms in plants, and viruses encode RNA silencing suppressors (RSS) to overcome host RNA silencing and facilitate virus infection. Sugarcane streak mosaic virus (SCSMV; species Sugarcane streak mosaic virus, genus Poacevirus, family Potyviridae) is a major causal agent of sugarcane mosaic disease in many countries in Asia, including China. In this study, we used Agrobacterium co‐infiltration to show that the SCSMV P1 protein, rather than the helper component‐proteinase (HC‐Pro), functions as a strong RSS to suppress local RNA silencing in Nicotiana benthamiana. Mutational analysis indicated that the 15 amino acids (aa; aa 1–15) of the SCSMV P1 N‐terminus were not important for RNA silencing suppression, but rather another 15 aa domain (aa 108–122) containing a conserved motif (LFR/KNKQAYIST) was essential for efficient silencing suppression by P1. In addition to the 15 aa (aa 344–358) domain in the P1 N‐terminus, another 15 aa domain (aa 65–79) of P1, containing the LXKA motif and one conserved aa (D78), were associated with P1 protein stability. Furthermore, substituting the histidine (H263) residue in P1 with threonine (H263T) or alanine (H263A) also affected P1 protein stability. Notably, the H263 residue is both a positively selected site and part of the serine protease catalytic triad (HDS). Taken together, our data demonstrate that SCSMV P1, and not HC‐Pro, plays a functional role in suppressing RNA silencing, and also show that some conserved motifs and a positivelyselected site in the P1 protein are associated with RSS activity and protein stability.

Single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SILSG) has been proposed as an alternative to conventional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (CLSG) in obese patients. This study aims to compare the surgical outcomes of these two techniques. A meta-analysis of existing literature obtained through a systematic literature search in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library CENTRAL databases from 2009 to 2019 was conducted. Eleven articles including 1168 patients were analyzed. Patients in the SILSG group reported greater satisfaction with cosmetic scar outcomes than those in the CLSG group (SMD = 2.47, 95% CI = 1.10 to 3.83, P = 0.00). There was no significant difference between the SILSG group and the CLSG group regarding operative time, intraoperative estimated blood loss, conversion rate, intraoperative complications, length of hospital stay, postoperative analgesia, postoperative complications, excess weight loss (EWL), and improvements in comorbidities (P > 0.05). Compared to CLSG, SILSG resulted in improved cosmetic satisfaction and showed no disadvantages in terms of surgical outcomes; thus, SILSG can serve as an alternative to CLSG for obese patients. Nonetheless, high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with large study populations and long follow-up periods are needed.

Solvatochromic compounds attracted more and more attentions in the application of fluorescent probe, indicator, chromogenic reagent, molecular recognition field and so on. Although sovatochromic effects have been discovered for more than a century, they are still difficult to understand and even more difficult to predict. This review introduced organometallic complexes and organic compounds of solvatochromic materials and highlight the latest progress in recent years, and the molecular structure design and solvatochromic properties are discussed.

3D printing of carbon fiber reinforced plastics can produce lightweight components with higher efficiency and more complex structure. For the short carbon fiber reinforced plastics, the composites are firstly made by compounding, then they are processed to filaments, powders or other needed forms, finally the components are printed by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selected Laser Sintering (SLS) or other methods. The tensile strength of the nylon-based component is more than 70 MPa. Companies such as EOS, Stratasys and Farsoon can provide the materials and equipments. For the continuous carbon fiber reinforced plastics, the divided carbon fibers and plastic filaments or impregnated carbon fiber filaments are firstly prepared, then the components are printed by FDM or other methods. The average tensile strength of the nylon-based component is more than 200 MPa. Companies such as Markforged and Arevo Labs have commercialized the 3D printing equipment/platform for the continuous fiber reinforced plastics.

Background Compensation related factors have been repeatedly associated with poor recovery following orthopaedic trauma. There is limited research into the factors associated with seeking financial compensation. Further understanding of these factors could facilitate injury recovery by purposeful compensation scheme design. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of seeking financial compensation, namely making a claim and seeking legal representation, following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma. The study was conducted in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, in motor vehicle crash and workers’ compensation schemes. Methods Participants were patients admitted with upper or lower extremity factures following a motor vehicle crash to two trauma hospitals. Data were collected at baseline within two weeks of injury. Participants were followed up at six months. Analysis involved: descriptive statistics for baseline characteristics; comparison of compensable and non-compensable participants with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and chi-squared tests; and logistic regression for predictor models. Results The cohort consisted of 452 participants with a mean age 40 years; 75% male; 74% working pre-injury; 30% in excellent pre-injury health; 56% sustained serious injuries with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) 9-15; 61% had a low-middle range household income; and 35% self-reported at fault in the crash. There was no significant difference in pre-injury/baseline health between compensable and non-compensable participants. Follow up data was available for 301 (67%) participants. The significant predictor of claiming compensation in the adjusted analysis was higher body mass index (BMI) (overweight Odds Ratio [OR] 3.05, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.63-5.68; obese OR 1.63, 95% CI 0.83-3.20). Participants less likely to claim were: involved in a motorcycle crash (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.28-0.82); socioeconomically less disadvantaged (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.17-0.82) or least disadvantaged (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.17-0.90); at risk for short term harm (injury) due to alcohol consumption (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.32-0.97); and with fair-poor pre-injury health (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.09-0.94). The predictors for seeking legal representation were speaking a language other than English at home (OR 2.80, 95% CI 1.2-6.52) and lower household income (OR 3.63, 95% CI 1.22-10.72). Participants less likely to seek legal representation were least socioeconomically disadvantaged (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.04-0.50). Conclusions Seeking financial compensation was associated with a higher pre-injury BMI rather than injury-related factors. Seeking legal representation was solely related to socio-economic factors.

During the last few years, synthetic self-healing materials have become a new class of emerging smart materials with the ability to repair damage and restore lost or degraded properties or performance using resources inherently available to the system. Success in the design of self-healing materials is important to material safety, product reliability and prolonged lifetime. This article covers fundamental material-independent principles and different self-healing approaches for polymeric materials. Among these approaches, some depend on specific external stimulus to achieve their goal while others regain the physical properties of the pristine material without such external intervention. Both the mechanisms and performance of different methods are discussed and evaluated, along with their advantages and disadvantages. In the end, both the potential application areas and the main challenges are also discussed in this article for a better understanding of future development trend of self-healing polymeric materials.

Piezoelectric materials, which can couple electrical and mechanical displacements, are one of the most important functional materials nowadays. They comprises piezoelectric monocrystals, piezoelectric polycrystals (piezoelectric ceramics), piezoelectric polymers, and piezoelectric composites. Sensors made of these materials can convert pressure, acceleration, flow rate, etc. to surface charge (voltage) that can be easily processed, and at the same time generate their own energy instead of consuming it. Compared to other electromechanical transduction technologies, piezoelectric sensors have the advantages of high environmental and chemical stability, broad temperature and frequency band, as well as self-sufficiency. Piezoelectric materials can also be used in various applications such as energy harvesters, actuators, transducers, and capacitors. This paper reviews the piezoelectric materials and their recent application progress on sensors and others. These published results show the developing trend of piezoelectric sensors to become lead-free, flexible, and with high performance.

High thermal conductive insulation material becomes a hot research area in recent years. The current paper reviews the recent progress of high thermal conductive insulation material; and the influence of the composition, structure regularity of resin, functional filler, manufacture process on the thermal conductivity of composite material is discussed. The open topics and future trend are also summarized.

Objective To determine the prevalence of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), in pregnant women and determine pregnancy and fetal/neonatal outcomes. Design Population-based cohort study. Setting New South Wales, Australia, 2001–11. Population A total of 630 742 women who delivered at ≥20 weeks of gestation. Methods Descriptive and multivariate regression analyses of perinatal data linked to hospital admission data. We compared birth outcomes of women with and without a documented diagnosis of IBD. Objective To examine pregnancy outcomes and pregnancy-related health service utilization among women with rare autoimmune diseases. Methods This population-based cohort study of an Australian obstetric population (2001–2011) used birth records linked to hospital records for identification of rare autoimmune diseases including systemic vasculitis, vasculitis limited to the skin, Sjogren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, Behcet's disease, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, and other systemic involvement of connective tissue. We excluded births in women with systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis as well as births occurring ≥6 months before the diagnosis of the rare autoimmune disease. Modified Poisson regression was used to compare study outcomes between women with autoimmune diseases and the general obstetric population. Results There were 991,701 births, including 409 births (0.04%) in 293 women with rare autoimmune diseases. Of the 409 births, 202 (49%) were delivered by cesarean section and 72 (18%) were preterm; these rates were significantly higher than those in the general obstetric population (28% and 7%, respectively). Compared to the general population, women with autoimmune diseases had higher rates of hypertensive disorders, antepartum hemorrhage, and severe maternal morbidity and required longer hospitalization at delivery, more hospital admissions, and tertiary obstetric care. Compared to other infants, those whose mothers had a rare autoimmune disease were at increased risk of admission to a neonatal intensive care unit, severe neonatal morbidity, and perinatal death. Conclusion While the majority of women with rare autoimmune diseases delivered healthy infants, they were at increased risk of having both maternal complications and adverse neonatal outcomes, suggesting that their pregnancies should be closely monitored.

Sugarcane-infecting badnaviruses (sugarcane bacilliform viruses, SCBVs) represent a genetically heterogeneous species complex, posing a serious threat to the yield and quality of sugarcane in all major producing regions. SCBVs are commonly transmitted across regions by the exchange of sugarcane germplasm. In this study, we develop two quick, sensitive, and reliable protocols for real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) of Sugarcane bacilliform MO virus (SCBMOV) and Sugarcane bacilliform IM virus (SCBIMV) using two sets of TaqMan probes and primers targeting the reverse transcriptase/ribonuclease H (RT/RNase H) region. The two assays had a detection limit of 100 copies of plasmid DNA and were 100 times more sensitive than conventional PCR. High specificity of the two assays was observed with respect to SCBIMV and SCBMOV. A total of 176 sugarcane leaf tissue samples from Fujian and Yunnan provinces were collected and analyzed in parallel by conventional PCR, SCBIMV-qPCR, and SCBMOV-qPCR. The SCBIMV-qPCR and SCBMOV-qPCR assays indicated that 50% (88/176) and 47% (83/176) samples tested positive, respectively, whereas only 29% (51/176) tested positive with conventional PCR with the primer pairs SCBV-F and SCBV-R. We demonstrate for the first time that SCBIMV and SCBMOV occur in China and reveal coinfection of both Badnavirus species in 29% (51/176) of tested leaf samples. Our findings supply sensitive and reliable qPCR assays for the detection and quantitation of SCBV in sugarcane quarantine programs.

Aims To evaluate the impact of enhanced primary care and practice incentive programs on the care of patients with type 2 diabetes in the Australian primary care setting using routinely collected data and computer modelling software. Methods Primary care patient data were electronically extracted from practices and inputted into the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) Outcomes model. A retrospective cohort study design was employed with predicted life expectancies compared between patients who had a recorded diabetes cycle of care (DCoC) and those who did not. Changes in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) were also analysed using a mixed-effects regression model. Potential life expectancy gains were estimated by inputting theoretical risk factors data consistent with current guidelines. Results Twelve primary care practices were recruited and suitable data were available for 559 people with type 2 diabetes. Two hundred and twenty five patients (40%) were identified as having completed at least one DCoC and as a group had a predicted additional life expectancy of 0.65 years (95% CI, −0.22 to 1.5). However, once this was adjusted for comorbidities the difference reduced to 0.03 years. There was no significant difference in HbA1c levels attributable to the intervention. An estimated 0.5 year of additional life expectancy was predicted should all patients have complied with current risk factor guideline recommendations. Conclusions Computer modelling using routinely collected primary care data can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of primary care programs. However, there are some data availability and linkage limitations in the Australian setting.

In order to check the feasibility of crosslinking engineering plastics through chemical coupling, reactive blending of polyamide 6 (PA6) was performed with various amounts of a multi-functional epoxide named as Joncryl ADR®4370s. The formation of cross-linked structure in ADR modified PA6 was clearly verified by utilizing dynamic rheological technique. The thermal properties of modified PA6 were compared with that of pristine nylon by combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Mechanical tests were also carried out and the results showed that ADR had a positive effect on improving tensile properties of polyamide.

Calcium supplementation, particularly with vitamin D, has been an approved public health intervention to reduce fracture risk. Enthusiasm for this intervention has been mitigated by meta-analyses suggesting that calcium supplementation with or without vitamin D increases myocardial infarction (MI) risk; however, concern has been raised over the design of these meta-analyses. We, therefore, undertook a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials with placebo or no-treatment control groups to determine if these supplements increase all-cause mortality and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk including MI, angina pectoris and acute coronary syndrome, and chronic CHD verified by clinical review, hospital record, or death certificate in elderly women. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases were searched from January 1, 1966, to May 24, 2013, for potentially eligible studies, reference lists were checked, and trial investigators were contacted where additional unpublished data were required. The search yielded 661 potentially eligible reports of which 18 met the inclusion criteria and contributed information on 63,563 participants with 3390 CHD events and 4157 deaths. Two authors extracted the data independently with trial data combined using random-effects meta-analysis to calculate the relative risk (RR). Five trials contributed CHD events with pooled relative RR of 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.96–1.09; p = 0.51). Seventeen trials contributed all-cause mortality data with pooled RR of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.91–1.02; p = 0.18). Heterogeneity among the trials was low for both primary outcomes (I2 = 0%). For secondary outcomes, the RR for MI was 1.08 (95% CI, 0.92–1.26; p = 0.32), angina pectoris and acute coronary syndrome 1.09 (95% CI, 0.95–1.24; p = 0.22) and chronic CHD 0.92 (95% CI, 0.73–1.15; p = 0.46). In conclusion, current evidence does not support the hypothesis that calcium supplementation with or without vitamin D increases coronary heart disease or all-cause mortality risk in elderly women. © 2014 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Introduction Many people at high risk of fractures are not following traditional guidelines and not being recommended for intervention. This study aimed to propose and evaluate a new set of intervention thresholds. Methods Participants were 213,375 men and women aged ≥ 50 years living in New South Wales, Australia. Fracture Risk Assessment Paper Charts (Australia) was used to estimate the 10-year fracture risk. The standardized rates (to Australia population distribution 2007) for intervention were calculated for different thresholds: our proposed new thresholds (i.e. 10-year probability of hip fracture: ≥ 3%, 5% or 7% for 50–69, 70–79 and ≥ 80 years respectively), thresholds by the National Osteoporosis Guideline Group (NOGG) approach, UK thresholds and US thresholds. Results The NOGG, UK and US thresholds did not work well in the Australian population. For example, the NOGG and UK thresholds respectively qualified only 1 in 12 (8.1%) and 1 in 9 (11.3%) Australian men aged ≥ 70 years and the US thresholds qualified about 9 in 10 (90.6%) Australian women aged ≥ 70 years. For men or women aged ≥ 70 years, our proposed new thresholds gave more realistic treatment rates of 21.6% for men and 70.5% for women. Compared to the current Australian guidelines (i.e. T-score ≤ − 2.5 and age ≥ 70 years or a fragility fracture), our thresholds identified an additional 4.9% of men and 18.2% of women aged ≥ 70 years for treatment. Conclusion The proposed new thresholds could identify currently under-recognised high-risk individuals for treatment. It should be considered as a recommendation for osteoporosis management in Australia.

BACKGROUND Incisional hernias occur at surgical abdominal incision sites but the association with caesarean section (CS) has not been examined. AIM: To determine whether CS is a risk factor for incisional hernia repair. MATERIAL and METHODS: Population-based cohort study in Australia using linked birth and hospital data for women who gave birth from 2000 to 2011. (n=642,578) Survival analysis was used to explore the association between CS and subsequent incisional hernia repair. Analyses were adjusted for confounding factors including other abdominal surgery. The main outcome measure was surgical repair of an incisional hernia. RESULTS: 217,555 women (33.9%) had at least one CS and 1,554 (0.2%) had an incisional hernia repair. The frequency of incisional hernia repair in women who had ever had a caesarean section was 0.47%, compared to 0.12% in women who never had a caesarean section. As the most common type of facial occlusion, eyeglasses may cause great accuracy degradation in face recognition. In this paper, we proposed an improved approach on automatically detecting and removing eyeglasses from grayscale facial images. First, we normalized a face image by the result of face detection and eyes localization. Then we used a fast judging method to detect eyeglasses’ presence. For images with eyeglasses, we used PCA reconstruction error and edge feature to determine the occluded area, and synthesized the area through image inpainting. Experimental results show that our approach can detect the presence of eyeglasses very accurately and obtain generally natural looking images without eyeglasses. In face recognition test, our approach greatly contributed to the accuracy of recognition, achieving higher improvement than other approaches such as simple PCA reconstruction, iterative error compensation, and weighted fusion.

By the field investigation on BaYinTaohai of WuHai，this article found that ,although this town locates in the northwest arid areas with little rain and big evaporation, the groundwater is abundant. Many artesian wells and springs are founded in this place. Through the analysis of the isotope characteristics of the groundwater in the study area, It is concluded that the shallow groundwater of south Wuhai recharge from local precipitation，while deep confined water recharge from allogenic water with isotope dilution.

Objective To compare the relative effectiveness of anti–tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapies on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) by inflammatory arthritis types. Methods Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) who had anti-TNF therapy (etanercept, adalimumab, or infliximab) in the Australian Rheumatology Association Database during 2001–2011 were assessed using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36), Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL), and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) disability index (DI) on a biannual basis. Linear regression was used for the analysis; the lack of independence in outcomes for multiple assessments in the same patient was taken into account using generalized estimating equations. Results There were 18,119 assessments (first-time drug use n = 12,274, subsequent use n = 3,098, and no use n = 2,747) provided by 3,033 patients (2,240 RA, 507 AS, and 286 PsA patients) with the anti-TNF therapies. The effects of subsequent use versus first-time use were reduced on the SF-36 physical component summary, AQoL, and HAQ DI scores among RA patients. After adjusting for therapy order, calendar year, sex, age, smoking status, and various medication uses, the 3 anti-TNF preparations had similar effects on the HRQOL measures for patients with RA, AS, or PsA. However, differences between anti-TNF therapies were observed in the AQoL score among PsA patients (infliximab versus etanercept: −0.06 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) −0.12, −0.004]) and in the SF-36 mental component summary score among RA patients (adalimumab versus etanercept: −1.17 [95% CI −1.88, −0.46]). Conclusion This study revealed similar effectiveness of etanercept, adalimumab, and infliximab on the HRQOL measures among Australians with RA, AS, and PsA.

This study aimed to determine the effect that level of concern for osteoporosis, as well as self-perceived risk of osteoporosis and fracture, has on supplementation use, seeking medical advice, bone mineral density (BMD) testing, and antiosteoporosis medication (AOM) use. Study subjects were 1,095 female Australian participants of the Global Longitudinal study of Osteoporosis in Women (GLOW) untreated for osteoporosis at baseline. Study outcomes from self-administered questionnaires included calcium and vitamin D supplementation, self-reported seeking of medical advice regarding osteoporosis, BMD testing, and AOM use in the last 12 months at the late assessment. Logistic regression was used in the analysis. Concern significantly increased the likelihood of seeking medical advice and, however, had no significant impact on screening or treatment. Heightened self-perceived risks of osteoporosis and fracture both significantly increased the likelihood of seeking medical advice and BMD testing while elevated self-perceived risk of fracture increased AOM use. Supplementation use was not significantly associated with concern levels and risk perception. Concern and risk perceptions to osteoporosis and fracture were significantly associated with certain bone-protective behaviours. However, the disconnect between perceived osteoporosis risk and AOM use illustrates the need to emphasize the connection between osteoporosis and fracture in future education programs.

Anaglyph 3D is a low-cost and popular 3D display method, made out of a photo pair. With only one common camera, however, there are difficulties in capturing moving objects. We suggest using the light field camera, which can be exploited as a computational stereo rig, to capture image pairs simultaneously. A processing framework for making anaglyph 3D image is then proposed. The effectiveness of our proposal is verified visually by experiments.

Face detection, pose estimation and facial landmark localization are three fundamental problems in pattern recognition. These three tasks have high request of algorithm efficiency and accuracy. Zhu and Ramanan proposed a model based on mixture of tree structures to solve the three tasks simultaneously and it obtains state-of-the-art result. However, the efficiency of their algorithm is relatively low. Our improved algorithm combines Viola Jones detector and tree-structured model and achieves a speed-up of tens of times even hundreds of times of original algorithm on ordinary laptop according to images of different sizes.

Comparing to oil transformer, the dry-type transformer minimizes explosion and fire hazard, as well as long product life. Meanwhile winding insulation plays an important role in the reliability, yet winding temperature rise may cause deterioration to the insulation. So it is critical to have temperature rise analysis for hot spot and prediction in the period of prototype design using finite element method, such as CFD. The key factors like completed boundary condition and coupling of electro-magnetic with thermal fluid will be obtained from experiment which could provide more accurate heat transfer coefficient for new design. Relative to method of thermal network, CFD has provided more accurate air convection model and different boundary condition definition, thus it could be an original data for other serial product simulation.

Background The extent to which complications or adverse outcomes in a first vaginal birth may contribute to mode of delivery in the next birth remains unclear. This study examines the impact of the first birth on subsequent mode of delivery. Methods The study population included women with a first vaginal birth and a consecutive second birth. Data were obtained from linked birth and hospital records for the state of New South Wales, Australia 2000–09. The primary outcome was the mode of delivery for the second birth. Planned caesarean was modelled using logistic regression; intrapartum caesarean and instrumental delivery were modelled using multinomial logistic regression. Results Of the 114 287 second births, 4.2% were planned caesarean, 3.0% were intrapartum caesarean and 4.8% were instrumental deliveries. Adjusted risk factors from the first birth for a planned second birth caesarean were third to fourth degree tear [odds ratio (OR) = 5.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.6, 5.4]], severe neonatal morbidity (OR = 3.2 [95% CI 2.9, 3.6]), perinatal death (OR = 3.2 [95% CI 2.3, 4.4]), severe maternal morbidity (OR = 2.8 [95% CI 2.3, 3.3]), instrumental delivery, large infant, labour induction, epidural use, use of oxytocin for augmentation and episiotomy. Important risk factors (OR > 2) for intrapartum caesarean in the second birth were perinatal death or severe neonatal morbidity in the first birth. Risk factors for instrumental delivery in the second birth were perinatal death, preterm delivery and instrumental delivery. Conclusions Obstetrical interventions and adverse pregnancy outcomes in the first birth were associated with increased risk of operative delivery in the second birth.

In practical problems, there are usually no clear counterparts as reference to evaluate restoration results. So no-reference blur assessment is very important and necessary. In this paper, we proposed an objective measure named as Edge Factor (EF) to appraise image blurring. The fundamental rationale was that blurring effect was much more perceptible in edge transition zones. The pixel number of edge transition zones would decrease when blurring occured. We defined the pixel number ratio of the edge transition zones to the whole image as EF. Experimental results show the monotonic consistency of EF and RMS. The proposed method is further compared with some common edge detection algorithms to demonstrate the effectiveness of combining point-based entropy with Pulse Coupled Neural Network.

In order to detect the concentrated leakage passages(CLP) more effectively and precisely, the temperature field emulation method of irregularity dam including seepage and leakage is established based on numerical optimization of concentrated leakage passage detection with kinds of boundary conditions. In this model, the effect of lapse rate, radiation from sun and wind speed on temperature field is included. The flow states of underground water determined, the heat transfer characteristics presented and the coupled relation between seepage and temperature distribution constructed, the coupled equations between seepage and heat transfer are set up.

This population-based cohort study of more than 600,000 Australian women describes the incidence of motor vehicle accidents (MVA) during pregnancy and the immediate and subsequent pregnancy outcomes. The Drug Burden Index (DBI), a measure of an individual's exposure to anticholinergic and sedative medications, is associated with functional impairment in community-dwelling, older people. In people from residential aged care facilities (RACFs), DBI score does not appear to be associated with functional impairment, but is associated with an increased risk of falls.We investigated the associations between increasing DBI score and mortality in older adults living in RACFs.Study participants (n = 602; 70.9% female), recruited from 51 RACFs in Sydney, Australia, had a mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of 85.7 ± 6.4 years and a mean ± SD DBI score of 0.58 ± 0.64.Exposure to anticholinergic medication was 33.6% and sedative medications 41.9%. All-cause mortality after a variable follow-up time (774-1269 days) was 36.2% (n = 218), with the leading causes of death classified as stroke (n = 46; 21.1%), ischaemic heart disease/cardiovascular system (n = 44; 20.2%) and pneumonia (n = 31; 14.2%). One-year mortality multivariate models showed that the DBI categories low (n = 260; hazard ratio [HR] 1.13; 95% CI 0.82, 1.57) and high (n = 153; HR 1.19; 95% CI 0.82, 1.74) were not associated with mortality. This lack of a significant association remained after dichotomization into the anticholinergic and sedative components of the DBI.We found that with high exposure to anticholinergic and sedative medications, there was no significant association between increasing DBI score and all-cause mortality in old individuals living in RACFs. Further research into the adverse effects of medication use on the mortality of institutionalized older individuals is needed.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most frequent causes of limited mobility and diminished quality of life. Pain is the main symptom that drives individuals with knee OA to seek medical care and a recognized antecedent to disability and eventually joint replacement. Evidence shows that patients with symptomatic OA experience fluctuations in pain severity. Mechanical insults to the knee such as injury and buckling may contribute to pain exacerbation. Objective: Our objective was to examine whether knee injury and buckling (giving way) are triggers for exacerbation of pain in persons with symptomatic knee OA. Methods: We conducted a case-crossover study, a novel methodology in which participants with symptomatic radiographic knee OA who have had knee pain exacerbations were used as their own control (self-matched design), with all data collected via the Internet. Participants were asked to log-on to the study website and complete an online questionnaire at baseline and then at regular 10-day intervals for 3 months (control periods)—a total of 10 questionnaires. They were also instructed to go to the website and complete pain exacerbation questionnaires when they experienced an isolated incident of knee pain exacerbation (case periods). A pain exacerbation “case” period was defined as an increase of ≥2 compared to baseline. At each contact the pain exacerbation was designated a case period, and at all other regular 10-day contacts (control periods) participants were asked about knee injuries during the previous 7 days and knee buckling during the previous 2 days. The relationship of knee injury and buckling to the risk of pain exacerbation was examined using conditional logistic regression models. Results: The analysis included 157 participants (66% women, mean age: 62 years, mean BMI: 29.5 kg/m2). Sustaining a knee injury was associated with experiencing a pain exacerbation (odds ratio [OR] 10.2, 95% CI 5.4, 19.3) compared with no injury. Knee buckling was associated with experiencing a pain exacerbation (OR 4.0, 95% CI 2.6, 6.2) compared with no buckling and the association increased with a greater number of buckling events (for ≥ 6 buckling events, OR 20.1, 95% CI 3.7, 110). Conclusions: Knee injury and buckling are associated with knee pain exacerbation. Reducing the likelihood of these mechanical events through avoidance of particular activities and/or appropriate rehabilitation programs may decrease the risk of pain exacerbation. This study aimed to determine the effect of fish oil on bone mineral density (BMD). There were no differences in the 2-year BMD measures between high and low dose groups after adjusting for baseline BMD. This randomized controlled trial did not demonstrate any efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids on bone loss in adults.The purpose of this study is to investigate whether supplementation with high dose omega-3 fish oil could have an impact on BMD.In a multicentre, double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) (ACTRN 12607000415404), 202 Australian participants aged ≥40 with knee osteoarthritis (mean age, 61.0 ± 10.0 years; 49 % female) were randomized to receive either high dose (4.5 g eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid daily) or low dose (0.45 g/day) omega-3 fish oil for 2 years. BMD was assessed at baseline and 2 years by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.In subjects with baseline and 2-year assessments, mean standardized BMD at baseline for low or high dose group was 1198 ± 198 and 1157 ± 169 mg/cm(2), respectively, for the lumbar spine and was 1035 ± 165 and 1017 ± 174 mg/cm(2), respectively, for the femoral neck. There were no differences in the 2-year BMD measures between high and low dose groups after adjusting for baseline BMD in the complete case regression analyses (lumbar spine 3.7, 95 % confidence interval (CI) -7.9 to 15.3 mg/cm(2) and femoral neck -5.5, 95 % CI -14.9 to 3.9 mg/cm(2)). The findings did not change with additional adjustments of age, gender, study centre and uses of bone-related drugs during the study period as well as using the intention-to-treat analysis or limiting to older participants (≥55 years at the baseline) (all P ≥ 0.25). Mild adverse events such as headache and gastrointestinal intolerance were common but did not occur more frequently in either group. There were no serious adverse events related to the intervention.A 2-year supplementation with high-dose omega-3 fish oil did not alter bone loss among men and women with knee osteoarthritis.

Aim Assessing the effectiveness of bracing treatment for tibiofemoral osteoarthritis (OA) and patellofemoral OA in patients with knee OA. Method This study was conducted within the Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program (OACCP), a 52-week multidisciplinary non-operative program for OA patients. All participants had symptomatic, radiographic knee OA. Knee bracing with Ossur Unloader One and Tru-pull Lite was offered for participants with medial/lateral tibiofemoral and patellofemoral OA, respectively. Participants were assessed at weeks 0, 12, 26 and 52. The primary outcome was knee pain and function at week 52, as assessed by the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) pain and activities of daily living (ADL) scores. Linear regression models were used to compare effectiveness for pain and function between three groups (patellofemoral bracing, tibiofemoral bracing and no bracing). Result There were 204 participants; 50 assigned patellofemoral bracing, 86 tibiofemoral bracing and 68 with no bracing. Mean baseline KOOS pain score was 52.9, 41.7 and 43.3 (0–100 scale where 100 represents normal) and mean baseline KOOS ADL score was 55.8, 43.7 and 43.1 for the three groups, respectively. Significant improvements were found in each group at week 52 for KOOS pain score and KOOS ADL. There was no significant difference in KOOS pain (P = 0.12) and ADL score (P = 0.13) at week 52 between the three brace types after adjusting for baseline variables. Conclusion A multidisciplinary non-operative program improved pain and function in persons with patellofemoral and tibiofemoral OA. However, wearing a patellofemoral or a tibiofemoral brace did not appear to provide additional benefits.
