Mg-6.75Zn-0.57Zr-0.4Y-0.18Gd (wt.%) sheet with typical basal texture was produced by cross rolling and annealing. Room temperature tensile tests were subsequently conducted along rolling direction (RD), transverse direction (TD), and diagonal direction (RD45). Deformation mechanism and orientation evolution during the tension were investigated by quasi-in-situ electron backscatter diffraction observation and in-grain misorientation axis analysis. The results indicate that the activation of deformation mechanism mainly depends on the initial grain orientation. For RD sample, prismatic slip plays an important role in the deformation of grains with axis nearly perpendicular to the RD. With the axis gradually tilted towards the RD, basal slip becomes the dominant deformation mode. After the tensile fracture, the initial concentrically distributed {0001} pole is split into double peaks extending perpendicular to the RD, and the randomly distributed {101¯0} pole becomes parallel to the RD. The evolution in {0001} and {101¯0} poles during tension is related to the lattice rotation induced by basal slip and prismatic slip, respectively. TD and RD45 samples exhibit similar deformation mechanism and orientation evolution as the RD sample, which results in the nearly isotropic mechanical properties in the annealed cross-rolled sheet.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) based seizure subtype classification is very important in clinical diagnostics. However, manual seizure subtype classification is expensive and time-consuming, whereas automatic classification usually needs a large number of labeled samples for model training. This paper proposes an EEGNet-based slim deep neural network, which relieves the labeled data requirement in EEG-based seizure subtype classification. A temporal information enhancement module with sinusoidal encoding is used to augment the first convolution layer of EEGNet. A training strategy for automatic hyper-parameter selection is also proposed. Experiments on the public TUSZ dataset and our own CHSZ dataset with infants and children demonstrated that our proposed TIE-EEGNet outperformed several traditional and deep learning models in cross-subject seizure subtype classification. Additionally, it also achieved the best performance in a challenging transfer learning scenario. Both our code and the CHSZ dataset are publicized.

ObjectiveOur aim was to explore the clinical value of multimodal imaging examinations in the diagnosis of congenital pyriform fossa fistula in children, so as to provide clues for the early diagnosis and treatment of congenital pyriform fossa fistula.MethodsThe clinical and imaging data of 55 children with pyriform fossa fistula diagnosed surgically in our hospital from 2015 to 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. All 55 patients underwent a CT scan. Of those patients, contrast enhancement CT was performed in 47 cases, MRI was performed in 2 cases, and barium esophagography was performed in 41 cases.ResultsAmong the 55 cases, there were 24 male patients and 31 female patients. The age ranged from 11 months to 13 years old, and the median age was 3.8 years old. The lesions of 49 cases (89.1%) were located on the left side, and the imaging of CT showed soft tissue mass in the anterior cervical region blurred boundary. There was ipsilateral thyroid involvement in 50 cases (90.9%), trachea and/or carotid sheath extension in 43 cases (78.2%), abscess formation in 39 cases (70.9%), and pneumatosis in 25 cases (45.5%). The CT examination of 22 children after treatment showed a linear or tubular low-density shadow in the thyroid gland, gas accumulation in the anterior cervical region or thyroid, and residual contrast medium, partly. A total of 24 cases underwent barium esophagography during the acute phase, and 15 cases (62.5%) showed sinus formation from the pyriform fossa downward or punctate high-density shadow in the anterior cervical region. The 2 cases where MRI was performed showed abscess formation in one side of the neck and thyroid involvement.ConclusionPyriform fossa fistula is most common in the left anterior cervical region, and it is closely related to the thyroid gland. The plain and enhanced-contrast CT scan can be used as the first choice during the infection stage. It helps to understand the location, extent, and structure of the surrounding tissue. The preliminary diagnosis of pyriform sinus fistula was according to the imaging features. It provided an important basis for clinical diagnosis and reduced the pain caused by repeated infection or surgical incision and drainage.

ObjectiveThis was a block randomized controlled study to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptance of Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) adaptation training in children with recurrent vertigo with unilateral vestibular dysfunction (UVD) and normal balance function.MethodsThirty children, aged 4–13 years, diagnosed with recurrent vertigo of childhood (RVC) with UVD (according to a caloric test) and normal balance function were analyzed. These 30 children were divided into 10 blocks based on similar age and severity of vertigo. Three children in each block were randomly assigned to one of three groups to receive 1 month of treatment. Group A received vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR) adaptation training, Group B received Cawthorne-Cooksey training, and a control group received no training. All children were administered pharmacotherapy [Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (drops)]. The Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Visual Analog Scale of Quality of Life with Vertigo (VAS-QLV), and canal paralysis (CP) on the caloric test were recorded before and after treatment, and the effectiveness of treatment was evaluated. The Visual Analog Scale of Acceptance (VAS-A) was used to evaluate the acceptance of the training in the two groups that received training.ResultsThere were 10 children each in Group A, Group B, and the control group; the male to female ratio was 1, and the average age in each group was 9.0 ± 3.2, 8.4 ± 3.0, and 8.3 ± 2.6 years, respectively. The effective rate was 100% in Group A, 65% in Group B, and 60% in Group C. The recovery rate on caloric testing after treatment was 100, 70, and 50%, respectively. DHI scores before and after training were 56.8 ± 12.4 and 8.8 ± 6.1 in Group A, 57.8 ± 12.6 and 18.8 ± 9.7 in Group B, and 56.8 ± 12.4 and 24.0 ± 15.3 in Group C (all P = 0.000). VAS-QLV scores before and after training were 7.5 ± 1.0 and 0.9 ± 0.9 in Group A, 6.4 ± 2.2 and 2.7 ± 1.1 in Group B, and 6.6 ± 1.6 and 2.6 ± 1.4 in Group C (all P < 0.05). The CP values before and after training were 35.7 ± 15.1 and 12.9 ± 8.7 in Group A, 33.6 ± 20.1 and 23.6 ± 19.3 in Group B, and 38.6 ± 21.1 and 24.8 ± 17.9 in Group C (P = 0.001, P = 0.015, and P = 0.050, respectively). Between-group comparisons showed that the decreases in DHI and VAS-QLV scores after training were significantly different (P = 0.015, P = 0.02), while CP values were not (P = 0.139). After training, the DHI value had decreased significantly more in Group A compared with Group C (P < 0.05), but there were no other differences. After training, VAS-QLV scores in Group A had decreased significantly more compared with Group B and C (P < 0.05). In terms of acceptance, the VAS-A score was 7.6 ± 2.2 in Group A and 3.1 ± 2.8 in Group B (P =0.004), The acceptance rate was 70% in group A and 10% in group B. there was no significant correlation between age and VAS-A in either group A or group B (P > 0.05).ConclusionThis study strongly suggests that vestibular rehabilitation training should be performed in children with vertigo to improve symptoms. For children with RVC with UVD but normal balance function, a single VOR adaptation program can effectively improve vertigo symptoms, and given its simplicity, time-effectiveness, and excellent outcomes, it is associated with better acceptance in children compared to classic Cawthorne-Cooksey training.

Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) share similar symptoms with influenza A (IA), but it is more worthwhile to understand the disparities of the two infections regarding their clinical characteristics on admission. Methods A total of 71 age-matched pediatric IA and COVID-19 patient pairs were formed and their clinical data on admission were compared. Results Fever, cough, nasal congestion and nausea/vomiting were the most common symptoms on admission for both infections but occurred less often in COVID-19. The IA patients were more likely to have lower-than-normal levels of lymphocyte count and percentage and to have higher-than-normal levels of activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, serum C-reactive protein, and serum procalcitonin, while the COVID-19 patients had higher odds of having lower-than-normal levels of neutrophil count and percentage. Conclusions This study suggests that influenza A is more symptomatic than COVID-19 for children and might be an overall more severe infection at the time of admission.

AbstractObjective To provide the reference biometric measurements of the normal foetal brain by prenatal MRI and describe the distribution of measurements in the foetuses with ventricular septal defect (VSD).Methods This retrospective study analysed the biometric measurements of 218 foetuses between 18 − 37 gestational weeks with normal MRI findings from July 2014 to August 2019, as well as 18 foetuses with VSD. The measurements included fronto-occipital diameter (FOD), biparietal diameter (BPD), and transverse cerebellar diameter (TCD). All the prenatal MRI examinations have been taken on the same 1.5 T MR unit with a standard protocol of the foetal brain. All the linear measurements of the foetal brain were obtained on the T2-weighted imaging. The distribution of measurements in 18 foetuses with VSD was plotted on centile curves.Results The reference data were presented in mean, standard deviation, 95% predicted confidence intervals, and the 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 97th centiles at each gestational age. The value of TCD in 56% (10/18 cases) foetuses with VSD was lower than the 3rd centile, and the rate for FOD and BPD was 33% (6/18 cases) and 22% (4/18 cases) separately. On the curves, most VSD cases with measurements lower than the 3rd centile were in relatively early gestational stage (≤28 weeks).Conclusions We have presented reference linear biometry of the foetal brain by prenatal MRI from 18 to 37 gestational weeks, which could help us to interpret and monitor the brain development for foetuses with VSD and other congenital heart diseases.Key messages:We have presented reference linear biometry of the foetal brain by prenatal MRI from 18 to 37 gestational weeks in multiple statistical methods: mean and standard deviation; 95% predicted confidence intervals and the 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 97th centiles.Our data showed that the involvement of the brain in VSD may be not globally, but regionally, and the cerebellum may be more possible to be involved.We speculated that the earlier the VSD diagnosed the worse the brain involved, which might suggest a poor outcome and necessary follow-up.

Background: Menkes disease is a disorder of copper metabolism and which follows a progressive degeneration of brain. It is a rare X-linked recessive disorder that results from mutations in ATP7A gene. The early diagnosis of Menkes disease is critical to patients’ prognosis. Case presentation: We report a case of Menkes disease. A 4-month-old boy presented with intermittent convulsions for a week. The brain MRI showed excessive tortuosities of intracranial vessels, and radiologists prompted for further examinations to confirm that it was Menkes disease. Patient was advised for biochemical investigations and genetic tests. Reduced level of ceruloplasmin (0.04 g/L; normal range, 0.2–0.6 g/L) was revealed. Genetic testing revealed a missense mutation within exon 18, c.3548 G > A, p.G1183D. This patient was almost misdiagnosed as epilepsy. Fortunately, based on the clues from radiologist, further physical examination and experimental tests were carried out. Conclusion: We reported the imaging features of a case of Menkes disease, which can provide clinicians with more clues to consider the possibility of this rare disease.

Abstract Background The new emerging coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) overall shares similar symptoms with other common respiratory viral infections. We aimed in this study to compare COVID-19 and human adenovirus (HAdV) infections in pediatric patients regarding the frequencies of major clinical symptoms and the potential disparities in laboratory and imaging parameters. Methods Following a case–control-like design, we built 72 age-matched pediatric COVID-19 and HAdV patient pairs. Their early symptoms and laboratory and imaging characteristics were then retrieved and compared. Results Fever and cough were the most common symptoms for both infections but were seen more often in HAdV than in COVID-19 patients (92% vs. 66% and 60% vs. 18%, respectively). Compared with COVID-19 patients, children with HAdV infection had statistically significantly higher values of neutrophil count, neutrophil percentage, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin but lower values of lymphocyte percentage, total bilirubin, potassium and sodium. Thoracic computed tomography also revealed more anomalies in HAdV patients than in COVID-19 patients (95% vs. 67%). Conclusions COVID-19 is an overall less symptomatic and less severe infection at admission compared to HAdV respiratory infection in pediatric population.

ABSTRACT Importance Cochlear implantation (CI) is an effective therapy for patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. It remains controversial whether children younger than 12 months of age should undergo CI. Objective To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of CI in children younger than 12 months of age. Methods We performed a retrospective study of clinical data of pediatric patients younger than 12 months of age who underwent CI and were followed up for 1 to 2 years. Patients’ developmental levels were evaluated by the Gesell score before CI. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were recorded to evaluate the safety of CI. Auditory and speech abilities were scored by the LittlEARS® auditory questionnaire (LEAQ), categories of auditory performance (CAP), speech intelligibility rating (SIR), infant‐toddler meaningful auditory integration scale (IT‐MAIS), and meaningful use of speech scale (MUSS) at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after CI. The associations between clinical characteristics before CI and postoperative scores at 1 year after CI were analyzed by the linear mixed‐effects model. Results Eighty‐nine children (47 boys and 42 girls) were included in this study (mean age at CI, 9.2 ± 1.6 months). Sixteen patients were diagnosed with cochlear malformation and 16 underwent bilateral CI. No severe complications occurred in any patients. The mean developmental quotient of the Gesell score was 78.00 ± 10.03. The median LEAQ scores were 0, 5, 10, 16, 22, 26 and 30 before and at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after CI, respectively. These findings implied that the LEAQ score greatly improved in the first year after CI. The overall CAP, SIR, IT‐MAIS, and MUSS scores also increased with increasing duration after CI. No significant associations were detected between clinical characteristics (age, sex, implant number, pre‐CI Gesell score, and inner ear malformation) and LEAQ outcomes at 12 months after CI. Interpretation With increasing duration after CI, auditory and speech behavior dramatically improve in young children. Our findings indicate that CI is feasible for children younger than 12 months of age.

Abstract Background Compared to adults, there are relatively few studies on COVID-19 infection in children, and even less focusing on the unique features of COVID-19 in children in terms of laboratory findings, locations of computerized tomography (CT) lesions, and the role of CT in evaluating clinical recovery. The objective of this study is to report the results from patients at Wuhan Children’s Hospital, located within the initial center of the outbreak. Methods Clinical, imaging, and laboratory data of 76 children were collected retrospectively and analyzed with the Fisher exact test and Cox regression statistical methods. Results Among 50 children with a positive COVID-19 real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR), five had negative PCR results initially but showed positive results in subsequent tests. Eight (16%) patients had lymphopenia, seven (14%) with thrombocytopenia, four (8%) with lymphocytosis, two (4%) with thrombocytosis, ten (20%) with elevated C-reactive protein, four (8%) with hemoglobin above, and six (12%) with below standard reference values. Seven (14%) of the 50 had no radiologic evidence of disease on chest CT. For the 43 patients who had abnormal CT findings, in addition to previously reported patterns of ground-glass opacity (67%), local patchy shadowing (37%), local bilateral patchy shadowing (21%), and lesion location of lower lobes (65%), other CT features include that an overwhelming number of pediatric patients had lesions in the subpleural area (95%) and 22 of the 28 lower lobe lesions were in the posterior segment (78%). Lesions in most of the 15 patients (67%) who received chest CT at discharge were not completely absorbed, and 26% of these pediatric patients had CT lesions that were either unchanged or worse. Conclusions There were a few differences between COVID-19 children and COVID-19 adults in terms of laboratory findings and CT characteristics. CT is a powerful tool to detect and characterize COVID-19 pneumonia but has little utility in evaluating clinical recovery for children. These results oppose current COVID-19 hospital discharge criteria in China, as one requirement is that pulmonary imaging must show significant lesion absorption prior to discharge. These differences between pediatric and adult cases of COVID-19 may necessitate pediatric-specific discharge criteria.

Objective This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical features and potential factors related to the time to return negative reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR in discharged paediatric patients with COVID-19.Design Retrospective cohort study.Setting Unscheduled admissions to 12 tertiary hospitals in China.Participants Two hundred and thirty-three clinical charts of paediatric patients with confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 admitted from 1 January 2020 to 17 April 2020.Primary and secondary outcome measures Primary outcome measures: factors associated with the time to return negative RT-PCR from COVID-19 in paediatric patients. Secondary outcome measures: epidemiological and clinical features and laboratory results in paediatric patients.Results The median age of patients in our cohort was 7.50 (IQR: 2.92–12.17) years, and 133 (57.1%) patients were male. 42 (18.0%) patients were evaluated as asymptomatic, while 162 (69.5%) and 25 (10.7%) patients were classified as mild or moderate, respectively. In Cox regression analysis, longer time to negative RT-PCR was associated with the presence of confirmed infection in family members (HR (95% CI): 0.56 (0.41 to 0.79)). Paediatric patients with emesis symptom had a longer time to return negative (HR (95% CI): 0.33 (0.14 to 0.78)). During hospitalisation, the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and antiviral drugs at the same time is less conducive to return negative than antiviral drugs alone (HR (95% CI): 0.85 (0.64 to 1.13)).Conclusions The mode of transmission might be a critical factor determining the disease severity of COVID-19. Patients with emesis symptom, complications or confirmed infection in family members may have longer healing time than others. However, there were no significant favourable effects from TCM when the patients have received antiviral treatment.

The rapid spread of coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) has manifested a global public health crisis, and chest CT has been proven to be a powerful tool for screening, triage, evaluation and prognosis in COVID-19 patients. However, CT is not only costly but also associated with an increased incidence of cancer, in particular for children. This study will question whether clinical symptoms and laboratory results can predict the CT outcomes for the pediatric patients with positive RT-PCR testing results in order to determine the necessity of CT for such a vulnerable group. Clinical data were collected from 244 consecutive pediatric patients (16 years of age and under) treated at Wuhan Children's Hospital with positive RT-PCR testing, and the chest CT were performed within 3 days of clinical data collection, from January 21 to March 8, 2020. This study was approved by the local ethics committee of Wuhan Children's Hospital. Advanced decision tree based machine learning models were developed for the prediction of CT outcomes. Results have shown that age, lymphocyte, neutrophils, ferritin and C-reactive protein are the most related clinical indicators for predicting CT outcomes for pediatric patients with positive RT-PCR testing. Our decision support system has managed to achieve an AUC of 0.84 with 0.82 accuracy and 0.84 sensitivity for predicting CT outcomes. Our model can effectively predict CT outcomes, and our findings have indicated that the use of CT should be reconsidered for pediatric patients, as it may not be indispensable.

Purpose: To discuss the different characteristics of clinical, laboratory and chest computed tomography (CT) between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in pediatric patients.Methods: We retrospectively retrieved data of inpatients with COVID-19 from January 21st to March 14th, 2020, and CAP from November 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2019 in Wuhan Children's Hospital. We divided CAP into mycoplasma pneumonia and other viral pneumonia. We analyzed clinical and radiological features from those patients, and compared the differences among COVID-19, mycoplasma pneumonia and other viral pneumonia.Results: Eighty COVID-19 inpatients from January 21st to March 14th, 2020, as well as 95 inpatients with mycoplasma pneumonia and 50 inpatients with other viral pneumonia from November 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2019 were included in our study. All patients were confirmed with RT-PCR. The clinical symptoms were similar in the three groups. Except fever and cough, diarrhea (6/80, 7.5%), tachypnea (2/80, 2.5%), and fatigue (6/80, 7.5%) were less common in COVID-19 patients. Compared to mycoplasma pneumonia and other viral pneumonia inpatients, COVID-19 patients present remarkably increased alanine aminotransferase (69/80, 86.3%). The typical CT feature of COVID-19 is ground-glass opacity, and it was more common in COVID-19 patients (32/80, 40%).Conclusion: The COVID-19 shared similar onsets with CAP. Even though the ground-glass opacity and elevated level of ALT were frequent in COVID-19, the better way for treatment and management of this disease is quickly and accurately identifying the pathogen.

Objective: This work aims to investigate the clinical features and the temporal changes of RT-PCR and CT in COVID-19 pediatric patients.Methods: The clinical, RT-PCR, and CT features of 114 COVID-19 pediatric in-patients were retrospectively reviewed from January 21 to March 14, 2020. All patients had chest CT on admission and were identified as positive by pharyngeal swab nucleic acid test. The clinical features were analyzed, as well as the features and the temporal changes of RT-PCR and CT.Results: Fever (62, 54%) and cough (61, 54%) were the most common symptoms. There were 34 (30%) cases of concurrent infections. The most common imaging features on CT were ground-glass opacities (46, 40%) and consolidation (46, 40%). The bilateral lower lobes were the most common pattern of involvement, with 63 cases (55%) involving one to two lobes, and in 32 (28%) cases CT was normal. Throughout the whole duration of COVID-19 in children, the diagnostic positive rate of RT-PCR has been far higher than that of CT (all P < 0.05). For RT-PCR follow-up, reliable negative results were obtained only 7 days after the onset of symptoms. Though lung involvement on chest CT progressed rapidly in several cases, lung involvement in children with COVID-19 is mild, with a median value of 2 on CT score.Conclusions: RT-PCR is more reliable than CT in the initial diagnosis of pediatric patients with COVID-19. On follow-up, reliable negative RT-PCR results are available 7 days after the initial symptoms. The use of CT should be considered for follow-up purposes only if necessary.

Abstract Background Microcephaly is a disorder characterized by severe impairment in brain development, reduced brain and head size. Congenital severe microcephaly is very rare, and NDE1 deletion and genetic mutations are important contributors. Case presentation Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and muation screening of NDE1 gene were performed in an 8-month patient with severe congenital microcephaly, and/or his parents. Genetic studies found a 16p13.11 deletion containing NDE1 gene, and a novel NDE1 mutation c.555_556GC > CT on the non-deleted homolog, inherited from his phenotypically normal parents, respectively. The 2 bp nucleotide change results in a missense mutation p.K185 N and a nonsense mutation p.Q186X. We also conducted literaturte review to compare the clinical phenotypes of our patient to those of cases previously reported with NDE1 mutations, and found all patients had mental retardation, severe microcephaly, and corpus callosum agenesis. Conclusion This is the first Chinese reported with microcephaly caused by NDE1 mutations. NDE1 is a critical pathogenetic gene in severe congenital microcephaly. Sequencing NDE1 and CMA in patients with severe congenital microcephaly may be warranted.

The tensile deformation behavior and corresponding microstructure evolution of the Mg-4.7Gd-3.4Y-1.2Zn-0.5Zr (at. %) magnesium alloy with long period stacking structure (LPSO) are studied by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and slip lines methods. The results show that less and very small size of twins is observed in the grains with high value of Schmid factor for twinning, which indicates that the growth of the {10–12} twinning deformation is prevented by the LPSO phase. The prismatic lines present in grains of which the prismatic slip Schmid factor is above 0.4. The favorable orientation and LPSO phase synergistically promote the activation of prismatic slip. The inhomogeneous rotation of the grains during deformation is the reason for the microcrack at grain boundary.

Phase unwrapping is a very important step in fringe projection 3D imaging. In this paper, we propose a new neural network for accurate phase unwrapping to address the special needs in fringe projection 3D imaging. Instead of labeling the wrapped phase with integers directly, a two-step training process with the same network configuration is proposed. In the first step, the network (network I) is trained to label only four key features in the wrapped phase. In the second step, another network with same configuration (network II) is trained to label the wrapped phase segments. The advantages are that the dimension of the wrapped phase can be much larger from that of the training data, and the phase with serious Gaussian noise can be correctly unwrapped. We demonstrate the performance and key features of the neural network trained with the simulation data for the experimental data.

Genetic polymorphisms in mTOR gene may be associated with cancer risk and clinical outcomes of cancer patients by affecting mTOR gene expression or its activation. However, inconsistent results have been reported. The aim of this study is to systematically evaluate the association between mTOR polymorphisms (rs2295080, rs2536 and rs11121704) and cancer risk as well as clinical outcome by a meta-analysis. We identified 10 eligible studies and extracted data by two investigators. Based on dominant and recessive models, odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using Stata, version 11 to evaluate the association strength. Pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have not been well studied in China. This study investigated characteristics and trends of hospitalized TBIs sustained by Chinese children.We analyzed 2002-2011 hospitalized TBI patients (0-17 years of age) treated at a large pediatric medical center in China. TBIs were defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes. We examined age patterns across external causes of TBIs. We reported the trend of traffic-related TBIs for each year from 2002 to 2011. Of 4,230 TBI patients, 67.1% (95% CI: 65.4%-68.8%) were city residents and 28.8% (95% CI: 26.3%-31.3%) came from rural villages. Males had disproportionately more TBIs than females (65.2% vs. 34.8%). Falls, struck by/against objects, and traffic collisions were the top three external causes of TBIs for all age groups. Falls were the leading cause of TBI for all ages but peaked at 2 years of age. There were 125 TBIs in 0-2 year olds (5.9% of all TBIs in this age group) that were caused by suspected child abuse. Suspected child abuse was significantly more likely to occur in 0-1 year olds. The proportion of traffic -related TBIs increased significantly from 12.99% in 2002 to 19.68% in 2008 but dropped each subsequent year until it reached a level of 8.91% in 2011.Our study confirms that falls, struck by/against objects and traffic collisions are the top external causes of TBIs in Chinese children. When compared with national data from the developed countries, gender patterns are similar, but the ranking of external causes is different. This is the first study to highlight the important role of suspected child abuse in causing TBIs in infants in China. TBIs caused by child abuse warrant further research and government attention as a social and medical problem in China.
