Abstract

Stellar-mass and supermassive black holes abound in the Universe, whereas intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) of ~10^2-10^5 solar masses in between are largely missing observationally, with few cases found only. Here we report the real-time discovery of a long-duration X-ray transient, EP240222a, accompanied by an optical flare with prominent H and He emission lines revealed by prompt follow-up observations. Its observed properties evidence an IMBH located unambiguously in the halo of a nearby galaxy and flaring by tidally disrupting a star -- the only confirmed off-nucleus IMBH-tidal disruption event so far. This work demonstrates the potential of sensitive time-domain X-ray surveys, complemented by timely multi-wavelength follow-ups, in probing IMBHs, their environments, demographics, origins and connections to stellar-mass and supermassive black holes., Comment: 64 pages, 15 figures, submitted

Abstract

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Despite its significance, it has been largely overlooked in global health discussions, with persistently high prevalence and incidence rates. This public health challenge necessitates attention both domestically and internationally. Between 1990 and 2017, the age-standardized prevalence of female infertility and associated DALYs rose by 0.70% and 0.396%, respectively. Economically, addressing women’s endocrine and metabolic health can bolster the overall well-being of the female population using existing resources. For judicious utilization of available resources, data regarding the burden of PCOS is pivotal for comprehending women’s health status and for devising and refining policies related to women’s endocrine health. Consequently, this study scrutinizes and assesses the age-standardized PCOS incidence rate and DALYs for 1990 and 2019, traces the trends of these metrics from 1990 to 2019, examines the composition of various populations and diseases, and offers international comparisons. This aims to furnish critical insights for future health policy development and adjustments in the realm of female endocrine and metabolic health.Patients and Methods: This study employed the Global Health Data Exchange to obtain PCOS burden data based on GBD 2019. It collected incidence, DALYs, and age-standardized rates (ASRs) from 1990 to 2019 across global, regional, national, and SDI quintile levels, spanning 21 regions and 204 countries. To analyze trends, ASRs and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated, with standardization crucial for comparability. EAPC was derived using a generalized linear model with a Gaussian distribution.Results: The global burden of PCOS increased significantly from 1990 to 2019, with estimated annual percentage change (EAPCs) of 0.56 for incidence and 0.83 for DALYs. The highest incidence rates were observed in the High-income Asia Pacific region, particularly in Japan and New Zealand, while the lowest rates were in Central Europe. Equatorial Guinea and Qatar exhibited the most pronounced increases in incidence and DALYs, attributed to urbanization and enhanced healthcare infrastructure. The incidence and DALYs of PCOS showed variation across SDI quintiles, with the greatest burden found in the middle-SDI quintile. Women between the ages of 20– 29 years had the highest incidence and DALYs, emphasizing the importance of targeted interventions during this critical period. In contrast, regions with lower SDI levels, such as Central and Eastern Europe, reported the lowest burdens of PCOS, likely due to underdiagnosis and limited healthcare resources.Conclusion: From 1990 to 2019, there was a significant increase in the global burden of PCOS, with variations seen across regions and SDI quintiles. Countries such as Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia had the highest burdens, while Central and Eastern Europe had the lowest. Xiaoyao Sanjie Decoction (XYSJD) exhibits remarkable therapeutic efficacy on TNBC; however, the underlying mechanism is unclear. This study verified the efficacy of XYSJD and its active component in the treatment of TNBC and explored its potential mechanism.Methods: Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-hybrid quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q Exactive HFX-MS) was applied to explore the main chemical constituents of XYSJD. The key targets and potential mechanisms of XYSJD in the treatment of TNBC were predicted through network pharmacology, bioinformatics analysis and molecular docking. The effects of XYSJD against TNBC cells were evaluated by CCK-8 assay, EdU assay, wound healing assay, transwell assay, Hoechst-PI staining and flow cytometry. The mechanism of action was validated by Western blot analysis. Finally, the effect and mechanism of XYSJD and Que on TNBC were further verified by the tumor formation model.Results: UHPLC-Q Exactive HFX-MS identified a total of 9 compounds in XYSJD. Network pharmacological methods identified 206 targets for anti-TNBC. Bioinformatics analysis suggests that the EZH2/AKT1 signaling pathway might play an important role in the effects of XYSJD against TNBC. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that the biological process of XYSJD in TNBC treatment mainly involved apoptosis. XYSJD and Que were observed to have a good anticancer effect in vivo and in vitro. In addition, quercetin could induce the apoptosis of TNBC cells by decreased the expression levels of EZH2/AKT1 signaling pathway. Furthermore, AKT1 overexpression, treatment with the AKT activator (SC79) and EZH2 overexpression could reverse apoptosis induced by quercetin in TNBC cells.Conclusion: This study revealed the anti-TNBC efficacy of XYSJD. Quercetin, the effective component of XYSJD, promoted apoptosis of TNBC cells via blockade of the EZH2/AKT1 signaling pathway. So we investigated it in this study.Methods: Patients with sepsis-associated NTIS admitted to Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, between March 2013 and April 2017 were included in the study. Participants were divided into two groups according to the optimal threshold value for RAR determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve. Cox proportional hazards regression and graphed with Kaplan–Meier curves examined the relationship between RAR and survival in patients with sepsis-associated NTIS. To account for potential confounding variables, a propensity score matching method was conducted to verify the relationship. Subgroup analysis was performed for different sex, age, comorbidities, infection location and other scores.Results: A total of 328 patients with sepsis-related NTIS were analyzed in our study. The univariate and multivariate regression analysis indicated that RAR was a significant risk factor for 30-day mortality (HR 1.039(1.012, 1.067), p = 0.004). However, subgroup analysis suggested that RAR may not be an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality in sepsis patients with NTIS combined with tumor or urogenital infection. ROC analysis demonstrated that RAR had a high discriminatory ability for predicting 30-day mortality (AUC 0.751, p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis indicated increased 30-day mortality in the higher RAR group. Following PSM, 108 pairs of patients with matched scores were created. The multivariate regression model demonstrated that RAR was an independent factor associated with 30-day mortality risk (HR 1.049 (1.015, 1.085), p = 0.005). Abstract

We performed a rigorous reverberation-mapping analysis of the broad-line region (BLR) in a highly accreting ($L/L_{\mathrm{Edd}}=0.74-3.4$) active galactic nucleus, Markarian 142 (Mrk 142), for the first time using concurrent observations of the inner accretion disk and the BLR to determine a time lag for the $H\beta$ $\mathrm{\lambda}$4861 emission relative to the ultraviolet (UV) continuum variations. We used continuum data taken with the Niel Gehrels Swift Observatory in the UVW2 band, and the Las Cumbres Observatory, Dan Zowada Memorial Observatory, and Liverpool Telescope in the g band, as part of the broader Mrk 142 multi-wavelength monitoring campaign in 2019. We obtained new spectroscopic observations covering the $H\beta$ broad emission line in the optical from the Gemini North Telescope and the Lijiang 2.4-meter Telescope for a total of 102 epochs (over a period of eight months) contemporaneous to the continuum data. Our primary result states a UV-to-$H\beta$ time lag of $8.68_{-0.72}^{+0.75}$ days in Mrk 142 obtained from light-curve analysis with a Python-based Running Optimal Average algorithm. We placed our new measurements for Mrk 142 on the optical and UV radius-luminosity relations for NGC 5548 to understand the nature of the continuum driver. The positions of Mrk 142 on the scaling relations suggest that UV is closer to the "true" driving continuum than the optical. Abstract

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. Abstract

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. We developed a predictive score based on independent risk factors for overall survival (OS), validated the model using a validation cohort, and compared its prognostic accuracy with commonly used HCC staging systems.Results: The number of tumors, albumin-bilirubin levels, alpha-fetoprotein levels, and portal vein thrombus grade were identified as independent factors influencing OS. Based on these factors, we established the DEB-TACE treatment of HCC (DTH) scoring system. The DTH score correlated well with OS, which decreased as the DTH score increased. According to the DTH score, patients were categorized into three risk groups: low-risk (DTH-A, 0– 4 points), medium-risk (DTH-B, 5– 6 points), and high-risk (DTH-A, 7 points). The OS of each risk group was 18.73± 0.62 months, 12.73± 0.10 months, and 6.93± 0.19 months, respectively (p< 0.001). The external cohort validation confirmed the accuracy of the DTH score, demonstrating superior predictive performance compared to other commonly used HCC scoring systems.Conclusion: The DTH-HCC scoring system effectively predicts the outcomes of HCC patients undergoing DEB-TACE as initial treatment. Abstract

We have studied the nuclear region of the previously detected dual AGN system in the galaxy pair IRAS 05589+2828 and 2MASX J06021107+2828382 through new optical spectroscopy observations, along with radio and X-ray archival data. Our multiwavelength data strongly suggest that the Sy1 \iras\, (z=0.0330$\pm$0.0002) conforms to a dual AGN system with the Sy2 \twomas\, (z=0.0334$\pm$0.0001) with a projected separation obtained from the radio data of 20.08\arcsec\, ($\sim$13.3\,kpc). Analysis of the optical spectra reveals a faint narrow extended emission from H$\alpha$ and [OIII] amidst the two AGN, supporting evidence for an ongoing merger. \iras\, is a double component narrow emission line AGN, with complex broad Balmer emission line profiles that clearly show a strong red-peaklet with a velocity shift of $\sim$3500\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The black hole mass estimates of \iras\, and \twomas\, are log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.59\,$\pm$\,0.14 (M$_\odot$) and log\,M$\rm_{BH}$\,=\,8.21$\pm$0.2 (M$_\odot$), respectively. In the X-ray bands, \iras\, is compatible with a Type 1 object, showing both spectral and flux variability. \chandra\, data of 2MASX\,J06021107+2828382 allowed us to measure a high hardness ratio in this source, providing evidence for a Type 2 AGN. The 22 GHz image obtained with the {\it Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array} has revealed that both AGN are compact radio objects with spectral indices -0.26$\pm$0.03 and -0.70$\pm$0.11, confirming for the first time its dual AGN nature in the radio bands., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 15 figures

Differential gene expression analysis, protein-protein interaction networks, and hub gene identification were performed. We studied functional enrichment, immune infiltration, and transcription factor/miRNA regulation networks. We also explored gene-disease interactions and protein-chemical/drug networks. Hub gene expression levels and diagnostic values were validated in TCGA and GEO databases. Prognostic analysis was performed on the core gene MMP9 in the TCGA-BLCA database to study its prognostic value. Finally, the mRNA expression of MMP9 was verified in bladder cancer cell lines and BLCA patient blood. The diagnostic value of MMP9 for BLCA was verified by receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis of the expression of MMP9 in patients’ blood.Results: We identified 524 common genes between SLE and BLCA, enriched in pathways related to apoptosis and cytokine regulation. Immune infiltration analysis for two diseases. Transcription factors and microRNAs were implicated in regulating these common genes. The gene-disease network linked hub genes with various diseases, emphasizing their roles in autoimmune disease and cancer. Protein-chemical/drug networks highlighted potential treatment options. Finally, our study found that MMP9 is a potential therapeutic target with diagnostic and prognostic value and Immune-related biomarkers in patients with BLCA and SLE.Conclusion: Our study reveals shared molecular mechanisms, genetic signatures, and immune infiltrates between SLE and BLCA. MMP9 emerges as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in BLCA, warranting further investigation. Abstract

Multiple isotopes of samarium element are the isotopes produced by the s process, and 154Sm is produced by the r process. In addition, 144Sm is p nuclei in nuclear astrophysics. The measurement of these can help us to better understand the results of relevant photonuclear reaction experiments. On the other hand, 149Sm is a 235U fission product with a 1% yield, its cross sections are important to reactor neutronics. In this work, the neutron capture yield of the natural samarium target was measured at the back-streaming white neutron beamline (Back-n) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), and the resonance parameters were analyzed by SAMMY code. The resonance peaks and the neutron separation energies contributed by the different isotopes are considered individually. The results of the capture yield found signs of the possibility of two resonance peaks at 8 eV, which awaits further experimental examination. Cross-section was calculated according to resonance parameters and was compared with other experimental results and evaluation databases of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2. A clear difference between ENDF/B VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2 database appears at 23.2 eV, the experimental result at this energy is smaller than data of ENDF/B VIII.0 database but CENDL-3.2 database. Abstract

We present high-resolution maps of the dust reddening in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The maps cover the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC) area and have a spatial angular resolution between $\sim$ 26 arcsec and 55 arcmin. Based on the data from the optical and near-infrared (IR) photometric surveys, including the Gaia Survey, the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History (SMASH), the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the near-infrared $YJK_{\rm{S}}$ VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we have obtained multi-band photometric stellar samples containing over 6 million stars in the LMC and SMC area. Based on the measurements of the proper motions and parallaxes of the individual stars from Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3), we have built clean samples that contain stars from the LMC, SMC and Milky Way (MW), respectively. We apply the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to the individual sample stars to estimate their reddening values. As a result, we have derived the best-fitting reddening values of ~ 1.9 million stars in the LMC, 1.5 million stars in the SMC and 0.6 million stars in the MW, which are used to construct dust reddening maps in the MCs. Our maps are consistent with those from the literature. The resultant high-resolution dust maps in the MCs are not only important tools for reddening correction of sources in the MCs, but also fundamental for the studies of the distribution and properties of dust in the two galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

29. On Granulation and Irregular Variation of Red Supergiants

Abstract

The mechanism and characteristics of the irregular variations of red supergiants (RSGs) are studied based on the RSG samples in Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and M31. With the time-series data from All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) and Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory survey, we use the continuous time autoregressive moving average model to estimate the variability features of the light curves and their power spectral density. The characteristic evolution timescale and amplitude of granulations are further derived from fitting the posterior power spectral density with the COR function, which is a Harvey-like granulation model. The consistency of theoretical predictions and results is checked to verify the correctness of the assumption that granulations on RSGs contribute to irregular variation. The relations between granulation and stellar parameters are obtained and compared with the results of red giant branch stars and Betelgeuse. It is found that the relations are in agreement with predictions from basic physical process of granulation and fall close to the extrapolated relations of RGB stars. The granulations in most of the RSGs evolve at a timescale of several days to a year with the characteristic amplitude of 10-1000 mmag. The results imply that the irregular variations of RSGs can be attributed to the evolution of granulations. When comparing the results from SMC, LMC and M31, the timescale and amplitude of granulation seem to increase with metallicity. Abstract

We present results of the long-term multi-wavelength study of optical, UV and X-ray variability of the nearby changing-look (CL) Seyfert NGC 1566 observed with the Swift Observatory and the MASTER Global Robotic Network from 2007 to 2019. We started spectral observations with South African Astronomical Observatory 1.9-m telescope soon after the brightening was discovered in July 2018 and present here the data for the interval between Aug. 2018 to Sep. 2019. This paper concentrates on the remarkable post-maximum behaviour after July 2018 when all bands decreased with some fluctuations. We observed three significant re-brightenings in the post-maximum period during 17 Nov. 2018 - 10 Jan. 2019, 29 Apr. - 19 Jun. 2019 and 27 Jul.- 6 Aug. 2019. An X-ray flux minimum occurred in Mar. 2019. The UV minimum occurred about 3 months later. It was accompanied by a decrease of the Luv/Lx ratio. New post-maximum spectra covering (31 Nov. 2018 - 23 Sep. 2019) show dramatic changes compared to 2 Aug. 2018, with fading of the broad lines and [Fe X]6374 until Mar. 2019. These lines became somewhat brighter in Aug.-Sep. 2019. Effectively, two CL states were observed for this object: changing to type 1.2 and then returning to the low state as a type 1.8 Sy. We suggest that the changes are due mostly to fluctuations in the energy generation. Abstract

Since their discovery in 1991, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) -- a novel one-dimensional carbon allotrope -- have attracted considerable interest worldwide because of their potential technological applications such as electric and optical devices. In the astrophysical context, CNTs may be present in the interstellar space since many of the other allotropes of carbon (e.g., amorphous carbon, fullerenes, nanodiamonds, graphite, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and possibly graphene as well) are known to be widespread in the Universe, as revealed by presolar grains in carbonaceous primitive meteorites and/or by their fingerprint spectral features in astronomical spectra. In addition, there are also experimental and theoretical pathways to the formation of CNTs in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we examine their possible presence in the ISM by comparing the observed interstellar extinction curve with the ultraviolet/optical absorption spectra experimentally obtained for single-walled CNTs of a wide range of diameters and chiralities. Based on the absence in the interstellar extinction curve of the ~4.5 and 5.25 eV $\pi$-plasmon absorption bands which are pronounced in the experimental spectra of CNTs, we place an upper limit of ~10 ppm of C/H (i.e., ~4% of the total interstellar C) on the interstellar CNT abundance., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

33. How Much Graphene in Space?

Abstract

The possible presence of graphene in the interstellar medium (ISM) is examined by comparing the interstellar extinction curve with the ultraviolet absorption of graphene calculated from its dielectric functions experimentally obtained with the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) method. Based on the absence in the interstellar extinction curve of the ~2755 Angstrom $\pi$--$\pi^{\ast}$ electronic interband transition of graphene, we place an upper limit of ~20ppm of C/H on the interstellar graphene abundance, exceeding the previous estimate by a factor of ~3 which made use of the dielectric functions measured with the spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) method. Compared with the SE method which measures graphene in air (and hence its surface is contaminated) in a limited energy range of ~0.7--5 eV, the EELS probes a much wider energy range of ~0--50 eV and is free of contamination. The fact that the EELS dielectric functions are substantially smaller than that of SE naturally explains why a higher upper limit on the graphene abundance is derived with EELS. Inspired by the possible detection of C$_{24}$, a planar graphene sheet, in several Galactic and extragalactic planetary nebulae, we also examine the possible presence of C$_{24}$ in the diffuse ISM by comparing the model IR emission of C$_{24}$ with the observed IR emission of the Galactic cirrus and the diffuse ISM toward $l = 44^{o}20^\prime$ and $b=-0^{o}20^\prime$. An upper limit of ~20 ppm on C$_{24}$ is also derived from the absence of the characteristic vibrational bands of C$_{24}$ at ~6.6, 9.8 and 20 $\mu$m in the observed IR emission., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We present three dimensional (3D) dust mapping of 12 supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galactic anti-center (Galactic longitude $l$ between 150\degr\ and 210\degr) based on a recent 3D interstellar extinction map. The dust distribution of the regions which cover the full extents in the radio continuum for the individual SNRs are discussed. Four SNRs show significant spatial coincidences between molecular clouds (MCs) revealed from the 3D extinction mapping and the corresponding radio features. The results confirm the interactions between these SNRs and their surrounding MCs. Based on these correlations, we provide new distance estimates of the four SNRs, G189.1+3.0 (IC443, $d=1729^{+116}_{-94} \rm \,pc$), G190.9-2.2 ($d=1036^{+17}_{-81} \rm \,pc$), G205.5+0.5 ($d=941^{+96}_{-94}$ or $1257^{+92}_{-101} \rm \,pc$) and G213.0-0.6 ($d=1146^{+79}_{-80} \rm \,pc$). In addition, we find indirect evidences of potential interactions between SNRs and MCs for three other SNRs. Abstract

The PandaX-III experiment plans to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{136}$Xe in the China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The experiment will use a high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to register both the energy and the electron track topology of an event. This article is devoted to the software side of the experiment. As software tool we use REST, a framework developed for the reconstruction and simulation of TPC-based detector systems. We study the potential for background reduction by introducing appropiate parameters based on the properties of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ events. We exploit for the first time not only the energy density of the electron track-ends, but also the electron scattering angles produced by an electron near the end of its trajectory. To implement this, we have added new algorithms for detector signal and track processing inside REST. Their assessment shows that background can be reduced by about 7 orders of magnitude while keeping 0$\nu\beta\beta$ efficiency above 20% for the PandaX-III baseline readout scheme, a 2-dimensional 3mm-pitch stripped readout. More generally, we use the potential of REST to handle 2D/3D data to assess the impact on signal-to-background significance at different detector granularities, and to validate the PandaX-III baseline choice. Finally, we demonstrate the potential to discriminate surface background events generated at the readout plane in the absence of $t_o$, by making use of event parameters related with the diffusion of electrons., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures. 36. The Period-Luminosity Relations of Red Supergiants in M33 and M31

Abstract

Based on previously selected preliminary samples of Red Supergiants (RSGs) in M33 and M31, the foreground stars and luminous Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (AGBs) are further excluded, which leads to the samples of 717 RSGs in M33 and 420 RSGs in M31. With the time-series data from the iPTF survey spanning nearly 2000 days, the period and amplitude of RSGs are analyzed. According to the lightcurves characteristics, they are classified into four categories in which 84 and 56 objects in M33 and M31 respectively are semi-regular variables. For these semi-regular variables, the pulsation mode is identified by comparing with the theoretical model, which yielded 19 (7) sources in the first overtone mode in M33 (M31), and the other 65 (49) RSGs in M33 (M31) in the fundamental mode. The period-luminosity (P-L) relation is analyzed for the RSGs in the fundamental mode. It is found the P-L relation is tight in the infrared, i.e. the 2MASS $JHK_{\rm S}$ bands and the short-wavelength bands of Spitzer. Meanwhile, the inhomogeneous extinction causes the P-L relation scattering in the $V$ band, and the dust emission causes the less tight P-L relation in the Spitzer/[8.0] and [24] bands. The derived P-L relations in the 2MASS/$K_{\rm S}$ band are in agreement with those of RSGs in SMC, LMC and the Milky Way within the uncertainty range. Abstract

Graphene is an atomically thin plasmonic medium that supports highly confined plasmon polaritons, or nano-light, with very low loss. Electronic properties of graphene can be drastically altered when it is laid upon another graphene layer, resulting in a moir\'e superlattice. The relative twist angle between the two layers is a key tuning parameter of the interlayer coupling in thus obtained twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We studied propagation of plasmon polaritons in TBG by infrared nano-imaging. We discovered that the atomic reconstruction occurring at small twist angles transforms the TBG into a natural plasmon photonic crystal for propagating nano-light. This discovery points to a pathway towards controlling nano-light by exploiting quantum properties of graphene and other atomically layered van der Waals materials eliminating need for arduous top-down nanofabrication.

Abstract

Interstellar extinction in ultraviolet is the most severe in comparison with optical and infrared wavebands and a precise determination plays an important role in correctly recovering the ultraviolet brightness and colors of objects. By finding the observed bluest colors at given effective temperature and metallicity range of dwarf stars, stellar intrinsic colors, $C^0_{\rm B,V}$, $C^0_{\rm NUV,B}$, $C^0_{\rm FUV,B}$ and $C^0_{\rm FUV,NUV}$, are derived according to the stellar parameters from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey and photometric results from the $GALEX$ and APASS surveys. With the derived intrinsic colors, the ultraviolet color excesses are calculated for about 25,000 A- and F-type dwarf stars. Analysis of the color excess ratios yields the extinction law related to the $GALEX$ UV bands: $E_{{\rm NUV,B}}$/$E_{{\rm B,V}} = 3.77$, $E_{{\rm FUV,B}}$/$E_{{\rm B,V}} = 3.39$, $E_{{\rm FUV,NUV}}$/$E_{{\rm B,V}} = -0.38$. 41. Probing the 9.7\mu m Interstellar Silicate Extinction Profile through the Spitzer/IRS Spectroscopy of OB Stars

Abstract

The 9.7$\mu$m interstellar spectral feature, arising from the Si--O stretch of amorphous silicate dust, is the strongest extinction feature in the infrared (IR). In principle, the spectral profile of this feature could allow one to diagnose the mineralogical composition of interstellar silicate material. However, observationally, the 9.7$\mu$m interstellar silicate extinction profile is not well determined. Here we utilize the Spitzer/IRS spectra of five early-type (one O- and four B-type) stars and compare them with that of unreddened stars of the same spectral type to probe the interstellar extinction of silicate dust around 9.7$\mu$m. We find that, while the silicate extinction profiles all peak at ~9.7$\mu$m, two stars exhibit a narrow feature of FWHM ~2.0$\mu$m and three stars display a broad feature of FWHM ~3.0$\mu$m. We also find that the width of the 9.7$\mu$m extinction feature does not show any environmental dependence. With a FWHM of ~2.2$\mu$m, the mean 9.7\mu m extinction profile, obtained by averaging over our five stars, closely resembles that of the prototypical diffuse interstellar medium along the lines of sight toward Cyg OB2 No.12 and WR 98a. Abstract

Supernova remnants (SNRs) embody the information of the influence on dust properties by the supernova explosion. Based on the color indexes from the 2MASS photometric survey and the stellar parameters from the SDSS$-$DR12$/$APOGEE and LAMOST$-$DR2$/$LEGUE spectroscopic surveys, the near-infrared extinction law and the distance of the Monoceros SNR are derived together with its nearby two nebulas -- the Rosette Nebula and NGC 2264. The distance is found at the position of the sharp increase of interstellar extinction with distance and the nebular extinction is calculated by subtracting the foreground interstellar extinction. The distance of the Monoceros SNR is determined to be $1.98\,$kpc, larger than previous values. Meanwhile, the distance of the Rosette Nebula is $1.55\,$kpc, generally consistent with previous work. The distance between these two nebulas suggests no interaction between them. The distance of NGC 2264, $1.20\,$kpc, exceeds previous values. The color excess ratio, $E_{\rm JH}/E_{\rm JK_S}$, is 0.657 for the Monoceros SNR, consistent with the average value 0.652 for the Milky Way (Xue et al. 2016). The consistency is resulted from that the SNR material is dominated by interstellar dust rather than the supernova ejecta. $E_{\rm JH}/E_{\rm JK_S}$ equals to 0.658 for the Rosette Nebula, further proving the universality of the near-infrared extinction law., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, accepted by ApJ on February 1, 2018

Abstract

Properties of atomic van der Waals heterostructures are profoundly influenced by interlayer coupling, which critically depends on stacking of the proximal layers. Rotational misalignment or lattice mismatch of the layers gives rise to a periodic modulation of the stacking, the moiré superlattice. Provided the superlattice period extends over many unit cells, the coupled layers undergo lattice relaxation, leading to the concentration of strain at line defects - solitons - separating large area commensurate domains. We visualize such long-range periodic superstructures in thin crystals of hexagonal boron nitride using atomic-force microscopy and nano-infrared spectroscopy. The solitons form sub-surface hexagonal networks with periods of a few hundred nanometers. We analyze the topography and infrared contrast of these networks to obtain spatial distribution of local strain and its effect on the infrared-active phonons of hBN.

44. Data-driven prediction of battery cycle life before capacity degradation

Abstract

Accurately predicting the lifetime of complex, nonlinear systems such as lithium-ion batteries is critical for accelerating technology development. However, diverse aging mechanisms, significant device variability and dynamic operating conditions have remained major challenges. We generate a comprehensive dataset consisting of 124 commercial lithium iron phosphate/graphite cells cycled under fast-charging conditions, with widely varying cycle lives ranging from 150 to 2,300 cycles. Using discharge voltage curves from early cycles yet to exhibit capacity degradation, we apply machine-learning tools to both predict and classify cells by cycle life. Our best models achieve 9.1% test error for quantitatively predicting cycle life using the first 100 cycles (exhibiting a median increase of 0.2% from initial capacity) and 4.9% test error using the first 5 cycles for classifying cycle life into two groups. This work highlights the promise of combining deliberate data generation with data-driven modelling to predict the behaviour of complex dynamical systems.

In addition, patients’ anthropometric indices, including fat-free mass index (FFMI) and appendicular skeletal-muscle mass index (ASMI), were measured using a body composition analyzer, and measurements were taken of the triceps skinfold (TSF), midarm circumference (MAC), and calf circumference (CC). We drew and analyzed a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to identify the best intercept point value for the assessment of skeletal-muscle atrophy.Results: The TSF, MAC, CC, FFMI, and ASMI of COPD patients were 1.08 ± 0.44 cm, 26.39 ± 2.92 cm, 34.5 ± 3.06 cm, 17.49 ± 1.86 kg/m2, and 8.17 ± 0.90 kg/m2, respectively. These anthropometric indices had a significant positive correlation with skeletal-muscle mass (correlation values, 0.481– 0.820). CC was strongly correlated with both FFMI and ASMI. The ROC curve showed an area-under-the-curve (AUC) value of 0.873– 0.959.Conclusion: Anthropometric indices were correlated with skeletal-muscle mass. CC showed the best diagnostic value in COPD patients, suggesting its effectiveness as a simple method for assessing skeletal-muscle atrophy and identifying patients with a noticeable reduction in muscle mass. However, its short half-life and poor biodistribution into cells and tissues hinder its clinical efficacy. Our dextran mycophenolate-based nanoparticles (MPA@Dex-MPA NPs) have greatly improved the pharmacokinetics of MMF/MPA. We here tested the therapeutic efficacy of MPA@Dex-MPA NPs against SLE and investigated the underlying mechanism.Methods: The tissue and immune cell biodistributions of MPA@Dex-MPA NPs were traced using live fluorescence imaging system and flow cytometry, respectively. Serological proinflammatory mediators and kidney damage were detected to assess the efficacy of MPA@Dex-MPA NPs treatments of MRL/lpr lupus-prone mice. Immune cell changes in the kidney and spleen were further analyzed post-treatment via flow cytometry. Bone marrow-derived macrophages were used to investigate the potential mechanism.Results: MPA@Dex-MPA NPs exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy and safety in the MRL/lpr mice using significantly lower administration dosage (one-fifth) and frequency (once/3 days) compared to MMF/MPA used in ordinary practice. The overall prognosis of the mice was improved as they showed lower levels of serological proinflammatory mediators. Moreover, kidney injury was alleviated with reduced pathological signs and decreased urine protein-creatinine ratio. Further investigations of the underlying mechanism revealed a preferential penetration and persistent retention of MPA@Dex-MPA NPs in the spleen and kidney, where they were mostly phagocytosed by macrophages. The macrophages were found to be polarized towards a CD206+ M2-like phenotype, with a downregulation of surface CD80 and CD40, and reduced TNF-α production in the spleen and kidney and in vitro. The expansion of T cells was also significantly inhibited in these two organs.Conclusion: Our research improved the efficacy of MPA for MRL/lpr mice through synthesizing MPA@Dex-MPA NPs to enhance its tissue biodistribution and explored the possible mechanism, providing a promising strategy for SLE therapy.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: mycophenolate, nanoparticles, macrophage polarization, tissue damage, systemic lupus erythematosus

50. On the Optical-to-Silicate Extinction Ratio as a Probe of the Dust Size in Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract

Dust plays a central role in the unification theory of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Whether the dust that forms the torus around an AGN is tenth-$\mu$m-sized like interstellar grains or much larger has a profound impact on correcting for the obscuration of the dust torus to recover the intrinsic spectrum and luminosity of the AGN. Here we show that the ratio of the optical extinction in the visual band ($A_V$) to the optical depth of the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate absorption feature ($\Delta\tau_{9.7}$) could potentially be an effective probe of the dust size. The anomalously lower ratio of $A_V/\Delta\tau_{9.7} \approx 5.5$ of AGNs compared to that of the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium of $A_V/\Delta\tau_{9.7} \approx 18$ reveals that the dust in AGN torus could be substantially larger than the interstellar grains of the Milky Way and of the Small Magellanic Cloud, and therefore, one might expect a flat extinction curve for AGNs., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
