The key problems with Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model for PM2.5 source apportionment were inconsistent results with different species selections and a lack of evaluation criteria for results accuracy. Moreover, high proportions of secondary inorganic aerosols sources (SNA) were identified by PMF without corresponding primary sources. This study develops a new method that combines multi‐isotopes (34S, 15N, 18O and 14C) and PMF model to optimize source apportionment. Data sets A–F, constructed from PM2.5 components, were input into PMF model to obtain optimal results (3–9 factors), which changed with the selection of species. Specifically, the contributions of coal combustion (CC, 3%–36%), biomass burning (BB, 11%–38%), and vehicle sources (VS, 4%–15%) showed significant differences in data sets, indicating that conventional methods cannot obtain accurate results. Then, 15N, 34S, 18O were introduced to restrict and reallocate identified SNA sources to primary sources, overcoming the influence of species on results. Additionally, 14C was used to evaluate data sets results, which showed that the combination of PMF model with more markers (data set F, 9‐factor) and multi‐isotopes techniques obtained optimized results that aligned with 14C results. Compared with the initial results, the contributions of CC, VS, and BB in the allocated 9‐factor increased by 26.4%, 5%, and 19.5%, respectively, becoming main sources of PM2.5. This study represents the first time that combination of PMF model and multi‐isotopes achieves SNA sources reapportionment and results evaluation, improving source apportionment methods. For the impact of underground pressure,the roadway support equipment has poor anti-shock capability and is vulnerable to impact failure. A variable gradient thin-walled cylinder energy-absorbing and anti-shock component for anti-shock bracket is proposed. Design of different wall thickness difference and number of segments of variable gradient thin-walled cylinder energy absorbing members,The impact-crushing experiment of each parameter variable-gradient thin-walled circular tube was carried out,and the relevant energy-absorbing and anti-shock performance parameters were analyzed. The results show that the increase of the number of segments and the difference in thickness of the thin-walled circular pipe members will reduce the initial wall thickness of the thin-walled pipe,and reduce the initial peak force. Under the same average wall thickness,the average supporting reaction force and total energy absorption of the variable gradient thin-walled tubes with different wall thickness differences and number of segments are higher than ordinary thin-walled tubes by 9. 3% ～ 178%. Water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) constitutes a substantial portion of organic carbon (OC) and contributes significantly to light absorption by brown carbon (BrC), playing pivotal roles in climate forcing. China is a hotspot region with high levels of OC and BrC, but information regarding the sources and light-absorbing properties of WIOC on a national scale remains scarce. Here, we investigated the light-absorbing properties and sources of WIOC in 10 representative urban cities in China. On average, WIOC made up 33.4 ± 7.66 % and 40.5 ± 9.73 % of concentrations and light absorption at 365 nm (Abs 365) of extractable OC (EX-OC), which includes relatively hydrophobic OC (WIOC and humic-like substances, HULIS-C) and hydrophilic OC (non-humic-like substances, non-HULIS-C). The mass absorption efficiency of WIOC at 365 nm (MAE 365) was (1.59 ± 0.55 m2(gC)-1) comparable to that of HULIS (1.54 ± 0.57 m2(gC)-1) but significantly higher than non-HULIS (0.71 ± 0.28 m2(gC)-1), indicating that hydrophobic OC possesses a stronger light-absorbing capacity than hydrophilic OC. Biomass burning (31.0 %) and coal combustion (31.1 %) were the dominant sources of WIOC, with coal combustion sources exhibiting the strongest light-absorbing capacity. Moreover, employing the simple forcing efficiency (SFE 300–700nm) method, we observed that WIOC exhibited the highest SFE 300–700nm (6.57 ± 5.37 Wg-1) among the EX-OC fractions. The radiative forcing of EX-OC was predominantly contributed by hydrophobic OC (WIOC – 39.4 ± 15.5 % and HULIS – 39.5 ± 12.1 %). Considering the aromaticity, sources, and atmospheric processes of different carbonaceous components, we propose a light-absorbing carbonaceous continuum, revealing that components enriched with fossil sources tend to possess stronger light-absorbing capacity, higher aromatic levels, increased molecular weights, and greater recalcitrance in the atmosphere. Reducing fossil fuel emissions emerges as an effective means of mitigating both gaseous (CO2) and particulate light-absorbing carbonaceous warming components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To quantify the volatility of organic aerosols (OA), a comprehensive campaign was conducted in the Chinese megacity. Volatility distributions of OA and particle‐phase organic nitrate (pON) were estimated based on five methods: (a) empirical method and (b) kinetic model based on the measurement of a thermodenuder (TD) coupled with an aerosol mass spectrometer; (c) Formula‐based SIMPOL model‐driven method; (d) Element‐based estimations using molecular formula measurements of OA; and (e) gas/particle partitioning. Our results demonstrate that the ambient OA volatility distribution shows good agreement between the two heating methods and the formula‐based method when assuming ambient OA was mainly composed of organic nitrate (pON), organic sulfate and acid groups using the SIMPOL model. However, the element‐based method tends to overestimate the volatility of OA compared to the above three methods, suggesting large uncertainties in the parameterizations or in the representativeness of the molecular measurements that need further refinement. The volatility of ambient OA is generally lower than that of the laboratory‐derived secondary OA, emphasizing the impact of aging. A large fraction at the higher and lower volatility ranges (approximately log C* ≤ −9 and ≥2 μg m−3) was found for pON, implying the importance of both extremely low volatile and semi‐volatile species. Overall, this study evaluates different methods for volatility estimation and gives new insight into the volatility of OA and pON in urban areas. Multiple methods have been used to estimate OA volatility, whereas the accuracy of each method is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to verify the volatility of ambient OA and its key component (i.e., particulate organic nitrate, pON) in urban areas by comparing the estimated results using different methods. With the help of state‐of‐art mass spectrometers, the estimation methods, including two heating methods, one formula‐based method, one element‐based method, and one gas/particle partitioning method, were achieved. In general, we found the heating methods show good agreement with the formula‐based method with a reasonable assumption of functional groups contained in OA and pON. In general, we observed a large faction of extremely low volatile compounds exist in OA (30%–40%), and both extremely low volatile and semi‐volatile species exist in pON, suggesting the complex evolution of atmospheric particles. The results provide a better understanding of the volatility of OA and pON in urban areas and benefit accurate volatility estimation that facilitates the model simulations of OA. Humic‐like substances (HULIS) are significant contributor to the light absorption of water‐soluble brown carbon (WSBrC), which contains certain strong light‐absorbing chemical components that are not well understood, impeding the assessment of WSBrC's climate impact. China as the hotspot regions with high loading of WSBrC characterized by high light‐absorbing capacity, here, we investigated the sources and atmospheric processes (δ13C–Δ14C), molecular composition (Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry), and light absorption properties (UV spectrophotometry) of HULIS in PM2.5 from 10 Chinese cities. HULIS‐C was major contributor to the light absorption coefficient (70.5 ± 6.6%) of WSBrC at 365 nm, which was more enriched with fossil sources (48.0 ± 9.0% vs. 30.3 ± 13.9%) but depleted in 13C (δ13C: −25.6 ± 0.9‰ vs. −22.4 ± 1.0‰) relative to non‐HULIS‐C. This suggests that the fossil components in HULIS are more recalcitrant to oxidative aging and exhibit higher light‐absorbing capacity, while the non‐fossil organic carbon is more likely to be oxidatively bleached into small, colorless, and highly polar molecules (i.e., non‐HULIS). Aromatic components are the major strong light‐absorbing fossil components in HULIS, dominantly originating from coal combustion (>77%). Non‐negative matrix factorization model showed that aromatic molecules from coal combustion have higher molecular weight and lower oxidation levels than biomass burning, potentially making them to be photo‐recalcitrant compounds. Our finding that coal combustion‐derived BrC maybe more persistent in the atmosphere and has greater long‐term impact on climate than BrC derived from biomass burning is an important consideration in climate models and mitigation policies. Plain Language Summary: Both the loading and light‐absorbing capacity of water‐soluble brown carbon (WSBrC) are high in China, but little is known about sources and atmospheric processes of strong light‐absorbing components in WSBrC. Humic‐like substances (HULIS) account for a significant fraction of light absorption by WSBrC, which may contain strong light‐absorbing components. Through dual carbon isotopic analysis, we discovered that HULIS‐C from 10 Chinese cities had relatively higher fossil sources contribution but lower δ13C values compared to non‐HULIS‐C. This indicates that the fossil components in HULIS not only possess a higher light‐absorbing capacity but are also more resistant to oxidative aging than non‐fossil components. The higher light‐absorbing capacity and resilience of fossil components can be attributed to the enrichment of aromatic compounds derived from coal combustion. Using the non‐negative matrix factorization model, we found that coal combustion tends to generate aromatic compounds with higher molecular weight and lower oxidation‐to‐carbon (O/C: 0.31 ± 0.03 vs. 0.50 ± 0.07) ratios than biomass burning. This characteristic may contribute to the recalcitrant property of coal combustion‐derived HULIS. Our findings highlight that coal combustion‐derived BrC may persists longer in the atmosphere and has a greater long‐term impact on climate than that derived from biomass burning. Following the successful experimental synthesis of single-layer metallic 1T-TaS2 and semiconducting 2H-MoS2, 2H-WSe2, we perform a first-principles study to investigate the electronic and interfacial features of metal/semiconductor 1T-TaS2/2H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2/2H-WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) contact. We show that 1T-TaS2/2H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2/2H-WSe2 form n-type Schottky contact (n-ShC type) and p-type Schottky contact (p-ShC type) with ultralow Schottky barrier height (SBH), respectively. This indicates that 1T-TaS2 can be considered as an effective metal contact with high charge injection efficiency for 2H-MoS2, 2H-WSe2 semiconductors. In addition, the electronic structure and interfacial properties of 1T-TaS2/2H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2/2H-WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures can be transformed from n-type to p-type Schottky contact through the effect of layer spacing and the electric field. At the same time, the transition from Schottky contact to Ohmic contact can also occur by relying on the electric field and different interlayer spacing. Our results may provide a new approach for photoelectric application design based on metal/semiconductor 1T-TaS2/2H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2/2H-WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) affect the global radiation balance due to their strong light absorption at the ultraviolet wavelength. The potential sources and molecular compositions of water-soluble HULIS at a suburban site in the Yangtze River Delta from 2017 to 2018 were discussed, based on the results of the radiocarbon (14C) analysis and combining the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) technique in this study. The 14C results showed that the averaged non-fossil-fuel source contributions to HULIS were 39 ± 8 % and 36 ± 6 % in summer and winter, respectively, indicating significant contributions from fossil fuel sources to HULIS. The Van Krevelen diagrams obtained from the FT-ICR-MS results showed that the proportions of tannin-like and carbohydrate-like groups were higher in summer, suggesting significant contribution of HULIS from biogenic secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). The higher proportions of condensed aromatic structures in winter suggested increasing anthropogenic emissions. Molecular composition analysis on the CHO , CHON , CHOS , and CHONS subgroups showed relatively higher intensities of high O-containing macromolecular oligomers in the CHO compounds in summer, further indicating stronger biogenic SOA formation in summer. High-intensity phenolic substances and flavonoids, which were related to biomass burning and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives indicating fossil fuel combustion emissions, were found in winter CHO compounds. Besides, two high-intensity CHO compounds containing condensed aromatic ring structures (C9H6O7 and C10H5O8) identified in the summer and winter samples were similar to those from off-road engine samples, indicating that traffic emissions were one of the important fossil fuel sources of HULIS at the study site. The CHON compounds were mainly composed of nitro compounds or organonitrates with significantly higher intensities in winter, which were associated with biomass burning emissions, in addition to the enhanced formation of organonitrates due to high NOx in winter. However, the high-intensity CHON molecular formulas in summer were referring to N -heterocyclic aromatic compounds, which were produced from the atmospheric secondary processes involving reduced N species (e.g., ammonium). The S -containing compounds were mainly composed of organosulfates (OSs) derived from biogenic precursors, namely long-chain alkane and aromatic hydrocarbon, which illustrate the mixed sources of HULIS. Generally, different policies need to be considered for each season due to the different seasonal sources (i.e., biogenic emissions in summer and biomass burning in winter for non-fossil-fuel sources, traffic emissions and anthropogenic SOA formation in both seasons, and additional coal combustion in winter). Measures to control emissions from motor vehicles and industrial processes need to be considered in summer. Additional control measures on coal power plants and biomass burning should be applied in winter.
