Going beyond the conventional theory, non-Abelian band topology uncovers the global quantum geometry of Bloch bands with multiple gaps and thus unveil a new paradigm for topological physics. However, to date, all non-Abelian topological materials are restricted to systems with time-reversal symmetry (T). Here, starting from a Kagome lattice inspired by Haldane model and designer gyromagnetic photonic crystals (PhCs), we show that T breaking can lead to rich non-Abelian topological physics, particularly the emergence of multigap antichiral edge states. Simply changing the magnetic flux of the Kagome lattice, or in-situ tuning the local magnetic field of the gyromagnetic PhCs, can lead to the unconventional creation, braiding, merging, and splitting of non-Abelian charged band nodes, alongside with the direct manipulation of the multigap antichiral edge states. Particularly, the quadratic point can be split into four Dirac points, a phenomenon unique in T-broken systems. Our theoretical and experimental findings will inspire a new direction in the study of non-Abelian physics in T-broken systems and open an unprecedent pathway for topological manipulation of electromagnetic waves.

Nonlinear multimode optical systems have attracted substantial attention due to their rich physical properties. Complex interplay between the nonlinear effects and mode couplings makes it difficult to understand the collective dynamics of photons. Recent studies show that such collective phenomena can be effectively described by a Rayleigh-Jeans thermodynamics theory which is a powerful tool for the study of nonlinear multimode photonic systems. These systems, in turn, offer a compelling platform for investigating fundamental issues in statistical physics, attributed to their tunability and the ability to access negative temperature regimes. However, to date, a theory for the nonequilibrium transport and fluctuations is yet to be established. Here, we employ the full counting statistics theory to study the nonequilibrium transport of particle and energy in nonlinear multimode photonic systems in both positive and negative temperature regimes. Furthermore, we discover that in situations involving two reservoirs of opposite temperatures and chemical potentials, an intriguing phenomenon known as the loop current effect can arise, wherein the current in the positive energy sector runs counter to that in the negative energy sector. In addition, we numerically confirm that the fluctuation theorem remains applicable in optical thermodynamics systems across all regimes, from positive temperature to negative ones. Our findings closely align with numerical simulations based on first-principles nonlinear wave equations. The puckered lattice geometry, along with $p$-orbitals is often overlooked in the study of topological physics. Here, we investigate the higher-order topology of the $p_{x,y}$-orbital bands in acoustic metamaterials using a simplified two-dimensional phosphorene lattice which possesses a puckered structure. Notably, unlike the $s$-orbital bands in planar lattices, the unique higher-order topology observed here is specific to $p$-orbitals and the puckered geometry due to the unusual hopping patterns induced by them. {Using acoustic pump-probe measurements in metamaterials}, we confirm the emergence of the edge and corner states arising due to the unconventional higher-order topology. We reveal the uniqueness of the higher-order topological physics here via complimentary tight-binding calculations, finite-element simulations, and acoustic experiments. We analyze the underlying physics of the special properties of the edge and corner states in the puckered lattice acoustic metamaterials from the picture of Wannier orbitals. Non-Hermitian physics has added new ingredients to topological physics, leading to the rising frontier of non-Hermitian topological phases. In this study, we investigate Chern insulator phases emerging from non-Hermitian kagome models with non-reciprocal and pure imaginary next-nearest neighbor hoppings. In the presence or absence of $C_3$ rotation symmetry, hybrid topological-skin effects are explored through the identification of distinct corner skin modes in different energy regions within two band gaps. By employing the dynamical analysis, the underlying physics is revealed from the non-Hermitian skin effects associated with the chiral edge states, leading to diverse non-Hermitian bulk-boundary responses. The simplicity of these kagome models and their rich emergent topological phenomena suggest that they are appealing candidates for studying non-Hermitian topological phases. We further discuss the possible realizations of these models in non-Hermitian metamaterials.

Fragile topology, akin to twisted bilayer graphene and the exotic phases therein, is a notable topological class with intriguing properties. However, due to its unique nature and the lack of bulk-edge correspondence, the experimental signature of fragile topology has been under debated since its birth. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that fragile topological phases with filling anomaly can be probed via screw dislocations, despite that they do not support gapless edge states. Using a designer hexagonal phononic crystal with a fragile topological band gap, we find that 1D gapless bound modes can emerge at a screw dislocation due to the bulk fragile topology. We then establish a connection between our system and the twisted boundary condition via the gauge invariance principle and illustrate that such an emergent phenomenon is an intrinsic property of fragile topological phases with filling anomaly. We observe experimentally the 1D topological bound states using the pump-probe measurements of their dispersion and wavefunctions, which unveils a novel bulk-defect correspondence of fragile topology and a powerful tool for probing fragile topological phases and materials., Comment: Submitted to Science Bulletin

Non-Hermitian physics has greatly enriched our understanding of nonequilibrium phenomena and uncovered novel effects such as the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) that has profoundly revolutionized the field. NHSE is typically predicted in systems with nonreciprocal couplings which, however, are difficult to realize in experiments. Without nonreciprocal couplings, the NHSE can also emerge in systems with coexisting gauge fields and loss or gain (e.g., in Floquet non-Hermitian systems). However, such Floquet NHSE remains largely unexplored in experiments. Here, we realize the Floquet NHSEs in periodically modulated optical waveguides integrated on a silicon photonics platform. By engineering the artificial gauge fields induced by the periodical modulation, we observe various Floquet NHSEs and unveil their rich topological transitions. Remarkably, we discover the transitions between the normal unipolar NHSEs and an unconventional bipolar NHSE which is accompanied by the directional reversal of the NHSEs. The underlying physics is revealed by the band winding in complex quasienergy space which undergoes a topology change from isolated loops with the same winding to linked loops with opposite windings. Entanglement entropy is a fundamental concept with rising importance in different fields ranging from quantum information science, black holes to materials science. In complex materials and systems, entanglement entropy provides insight into the collective degrees of freedom that underlie the systems' complex behaviours. As well-known predictions, the entanglement entropy exhibits area laws for systems with gapped excitations, whereas it follows the Gioev-Klich-Widom scaling law in gapless fermion systems. Furthermore, the entanglement spectrum provides salient characterizations of topological phases and phase transitions beyond the conventional paradigms. However, many of these fundamental predictions have not yet been confirmed in experiments due to the difficulties in measuring entanglement entropy in physical systems. Here, we report the experimental verification of the above predictions by probing the nonlocal correlations in phononic systems. From the pump-probe responses in phononic crystals, we obtain the entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum for phononic systems with the fermion filling analog. With these measurements, we verify the Gioev-Klich-Widom scaling law of entanglement entropy for various quasiparticle dispersions in one- and two-dimensions. Moreover, we observe the salient signatures of topological phases in the entanglement spectrum and entanglement entropy which unveil an unprecedented probe of topological phases without relying on the bulk-boundary correspondence. The progress here opens a frontier where entanglement entropy serves as an important experimental tool in the study of emergent phases and phase transitions which can be generalized to non-Hermitian and other unconventional regimes.

Non-Hermitian effects have emerged as a new paradigm for the manipulation of phases of matter that profoundly changes our understanding of non-equilibrium systems, introducing novel concepts such as exceptional points and spectral topology, as well as exotic phenomena such as non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSEs). Most existing studies, however, focus on non-Hermitian eigenstates, whereas dynamic properties of non-Hermitian systems have been discussed only very recently, predicting unexpected phenomena such as wave self-healing, chiral Zener tunneling, and the dynamic NHSEs that are not yet confirmed in experiments. Here, we report the first experimental observation of rich non-Hermitian skin dynamics using tunable one-dimensional nonreciprocal double-chain mechanical systems with glide-time symmetry. Remarkably, dynamic NHSEs are observed with various dynamic behaviors in different dynamic phases, revealing the intriguing nature of these phases that can be understood via the generalized Brillouin zone and the related concepts. Moreover, the observed tunable non-Hermitian skin dynamics and amplifications, the bulk unidirectional wave propagation, and the boundary wave trapping provide promising ways to guide, trap, and amplify waves in a controllable and robust way. Our findings unveil the fundamental aspects and open a new pathway toward non-Hermitian dynamics, which will fertilize the study of non-equilibrium phases of matter and give rise to novel applications in information processing.

Quantum thermodynamics with microscopic inelastic scattering processes has been intensively investigated in recent years. Here, we apply quantum master equation combined with full counting statistics approach to investigate the role of quantum coherence on the periodically-driven inelastic heat engine. We demonstrate that the inelastic quantum heat engine exhibits dramatic advantage of thermodynamic performance compared to their elastic counterpart. Moreover, it is found that inelastic currents, {output work}, and the efficiency can be enhanced by quantum coherence. In particular, the geometric effect proves crucial in achieving maximal values of generated output work and energy conversion efficiency. The Berry curvature boosted by quantum coherence unveils the underlying mechanism of periodically-driven inelastic heat engine. Photonic crystals (PCs) are periodic dielectric structures that severed as an excellent platform to manipulate light. A conventional way to guide/trap light via PCs is to introduce a line or point defect by removing or modifying several unit cells. Here we show that the light can be effectively guided and trapped in the glided photonic crystal interfaces (GPCIs). The projected band gap of GPCIs, which depends on the glide parameter, is characterized by a Dirac mass. Interestingly, the GPCIs with zero Dirac mass is a glide-symmetric waveguide featured with excellent transmission performance even in the presence of sharp corners and disorders. Moreover, placing two GPCIs with opposite Dirac mass together results in a photonic bound state due to the Jackiw-Rebbi theory. Our work provides an alternative way towards the design of ultracompact photonic devices such as GPCIs-induced coupled cavity-waveguide system and waveguide splitter.

Diffusion driven by temperature or concentration gradients is a fundamental mechanism of energy and mass transport, which inherently differs from wave propagation in both physical foundations and application prospects. Compared with conventional schemes, metamaterials provide an unprecedented potential for governing diffusion processes, based on emerging theories like the transformation and the scattering cancellation theory, which enormously expanded the original concepts and suggest innovative metamaterial-based devices. We hereby use the term "diffusionics" to generalize these remarkable achievements in various energy (e.g., heat) and mass (e.g., particles and plasmas) diffusion systems. For clarity, we categorize the numerous studies appeared during the last decade by diffusion field (i.e., heat, particles, and plasmas) and discuss them from three different perspectives: the theoretical perspective, to detail how the transformation principle is applied to each diffusion field; the application perspective, to introduce various intriguing metamaterial-based devices, such as cloaks and radiative coolers; and the physics perspective, to connect with concepts of recent concern, such as non-Hermitian topology, nonreciprocal transport, and spatiotemporal modulation. We also discuss the possibility of controlling diffusion processes beyond metamaterials. Interfacial interactions are crucial in a variety of fields and can greatly affect the electric, magnetic, and chemical properties of materials. Among them, interface orbital hybridization plays a fundamental role in the properties of surface electrons such as dispersion, interaction, and ground states. Conventional measurements of electronic states at interfaces such as scanning tunneling microscopes are all based on electric interactions which, however, suffer from strong perturbation on these electrons. Here we unveil a new experimental detection of interface electrons based on the weak magnetic interactions between them and the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. With negligible perturbation on the interface electrons, their physical properties can be revealed by the NV spin coherence time. In our system, the interface interaction leads to significant decreases in both the density and coherence time of the electron spins at the diamond-graphene interface. Furthermore, together with electron spin resonance spectra and first-principle calculations, we can retrieve the effect of interface electron orbital hybridization. Our study opens a new pathway toward the microscopic probing of interfacial electronic states with weak magnetic interactions and provides a new avenue for future research on material interfaces.

The concept of topological energy bands and their manifestations have been demonstrated in condensed matter systems as a fantastic paradigm toward unprecedented physical phenomena and properties that are robust against disorders. Recent years, this paradigm was extended to phononic metamaterials (including mechanical and acoustic metamaterials), giving rise to the discovery of remarkable phenomena that were not observed elsewhere thanks to the extraordinary controllability and tunability of phononic metamaterials as well as versatile measuring techniques. These phenomena include, but not limited to, topological negative refraction, topological 'sasers' (i.e., the phonon analog of lasers), higher-order topological insulating states, non-Abelian topological phases, higher-order Weyl semimetal phases, Majorana-like modes in Dirac vortex structures and fragile topological phases with spectral flows. Here we review the developments in the field of topological phononic metamaterials from both theoretical and experimental perspectives with emphasis on the underlying physics principles. To give a broad view of topological phononics, we also discuss the synergy with non-Hermitian effects and cover topics including synthetic dimensions, artificial gauge fields, Floquet topological acoustics, bulk topological transport, topological pumping, and topological active matters as well as potential applications, materials fabrications and measurements of topological phononic metamaterials. Finally, we discuss the challenges, opportunities and future developments in this intriguing field and its potential impact on physics and materials science., Comment: Under review at Rep. Prog. Thermal metamaterials provide rich control of heat transport which is becoming the foundations of cutting-edge applications ranging from chip cooling to biomedical. However, due to the fundamental laws of physics, the manipulation of heat is much constrained in conventional thermal metamaterials where effective heat conduction with Onsager reciprocity dominates. Here, through the inclusion of thermal convection and breaking the Onsager reciprocity, we unveil a regime in thermal metamaterials and transformation thermotics that goes beyond effective heat conduction. By designing a liquid-solid hybrid thermal metamaterial, we demonstrate a continuous switch from thermal cloaking to thermal concentration in one device with external tuning. Underlying such a switch is a topology transition in the virtual space of the thermotic transformation which is achieved by tuning the liquid flow via external control. These discoveries illustrate the extraordinary heat transport in complex multi-component thermal metamaterials and pave the way toward an unprecedented regime of heat manipulation.

Local density-of-states (LDOS) is a fundamental spectral property that plays a central role in various physical phenomena such as wave-matter interactions. Here, we report on the direct measurement of the LDOS of acoustic systems and derive from which the fractional topological number in an acoustic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger system. The acoustic LDOS is quantified here with a state-of-the-art technique through the measurement of the volume flow rate and the acoustic pressure with a local excitation-probe configuration. Based on this method, we study the acoustic Purcell effect and establish experimentally the important relation between the near-field LDOS and the far-field acoustic emission power. Moreover, we detect the LDOS in the one-dimensional acoustic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and observe the fractional topological number of the system. Our work unveils the important role of the LDOS in acoustic phenomena and paves the way toward characterizing and tailoring the LDOS in topological systems.

Including phonon-assisted inelastic process in thermoelectric devices is able to enhance the performance of nonequilibrium work extraction. In this work, we demonstrate that inelastic phonon-thermoelectric devices have a fertile functionality diagram, where particle current and phononic heat currents are coupled and fueled by chemical potential difference. Such devices can simultaneously perform multiple tasks, e.g., heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps. Guided by the entropy production, we mainly study the efficiencies and coefficients of performance of multitask quantum thermal machines, where the roles of the inelastic scattering process and multiple biases in multiterminal setups are emphasized. Specifically, in a three-terminal double-quantum-dot setup with a tunable gate, we show that it efficiently performs two useful tasks due to the phonon-assisted inelastic process. Moreover, the cooperation between the longitudinal and transverse thermoelectric effects in the three-terminal thermoelectric systems leads to markedly improved performance of the thermal machines. While for the four-terminal four-quantum-dot thermoelectric setup, we find that additional thermodynamic affinity furnishes the system with both enriched functionality and enhanced efficiency. There are two prominent applications of the mathematical concept of topology to the physics of materials: band topology, which classifies different topological insulators and semimetals, and topological defects that represent immutable deviations of a solid lattice from its ideal crystalline form. While these two classes of topological phenomena have generally been treated as separate topics, recent experimental advancements have begun to probe their intricate and surprising interactions, in real materials as well as synthetic metamaterials. Topological lattice defects in topological materials offer a platform to explore a diverse range of novel phenomena, such as topological pumping via topological defects, embedded topological phases, synthetic dimensions, and non-Hermitian skin effects. Photonic topological phases offering unprecedented manipulation of electromagnetic waves have attracted much research interest which, however, have been mostly restricted to a single band gap. Here, we report on the experimental discovery of hybrid topological photonic crystals which host simultaneously quantum anomalous Hall and valley Hall phases in different photonic band gaps. The underlying hybrid topological phase manifests itself in the edge responses as the coexistence of the chiral edge states and valley Hall edge states in different frequency ranges. We experimentally verify such an emergent phenomenon and show that such a feature enables novel multiplexing of photon transport in the edge channels. Our study reveals a situation with coexisting topology of distinct nature in a single photonic system that may enable frequency-dependent filtering and manipulation of topological edge photons.

Twisted bilayer two-dimensional electronic systems give rise to many exotic phenomena and unveil a new frontier for the study of quantum materials. In photonics, twisted two-dimensional systems coupled via near-field interactions offer a platform to study localization and lasing. Here, we propose that twisting can be an unprecedented tool to tune the performance of near-field thermophotovoltaic systems. Remarkably, through twisting-induced photonic topological transitions, we achieve significant tuning of the thermophotovoltaic energy efficiency and power. The underlying mechanism is related to the change of the photonic iso-frequency contours from elliptical to hyperbolic geometries in a setup where the hexagonal-boron-nitride metasurface serves as the heat source and the indium antimonide $p$-$n$ junction serves as the cell. We find a notably high energy efficiency, nearly 53\% of the Carnot efficiency, can be achieved in our thermophotovoltaic system, while the output power can reach to $1.1\times10^4$~W/m$^2$ without requiring a large temperature difference between the source and the cell. Our results indicate the promising future of twisted near-field thermophotovoltaics and paves the way towards tunable, high-performance thermophotovoltaics and infrared detection.

Higher-order topological insulators, which support lower-dimensional topological boundary states than the first-order topological insulators, have been intensely investigated in the integer dimensional systems. Here, we provide a new paradigm by presenting experimentally a higher-order topological phase in a fractal-dimensional system. Through applying the Benalcazar, Bernevig, and Hughes model into a Sierpinski carpet fractal lattice, we uncover a squeezed higher-order phase diagram featuring the abundant corner states, which consist of zero-dimensional outer corner states and 1.89-dimensional inner corner states. As a result, the codimension is now 1.89 and our model can be classified into the fractional-order topological insulators. The non-zero fractional charges at the outer/inner corners indicate that all corner states in the fractal system are indeed topologically nontrivial. Finally, in a fabricated acoustic fractal lattice, we experimentally observe the outer/inner corner states with local acoustic measurements. Our work demonstrates a higher-order topological phase in an acoustic fractal lattice and may pave the way to the fractional-order topological insulators.

Topological phases of matter have been extensively investigated in solid state materials and classical wave systems with integer dimensions. However, topological states in non-integer dimensions remain largely unexplored. Fractals, being nearly the same at different scales, are one of the intriguing complex geometries with non-integer dimensions. Here, we demonstrate acoustic Sierpi\'nski fractal topological insulators with unconventional higher-order topological phenomena via consistent theory and experiments. We discover abundant topological edge and corner states emerging in our acoustic systems due to the rich edge and corner boundaries inside the fractals. Interestingly, the numbers of the edge and corner states scale the same as the bulk states with the system size and the exponents coincide with the Hausdorff fractal dimension of the Sierpi\'nski carpet. We report on the experimental observation of a gapped nontrivial Euler topology in an acoustic metamaterial. The topological invariant in this case is the Euler class, which characterizes the two-dimensional geometry of the acoustic Bloch wave function of multiple bands in the Brillouin zone -- a feature that cannot be captured by conventional topological classification schemes. Starting from a carefully designed acoustic system, we retrieve a rich phase diagram that includes the gapped Euler phase on top of non-Abelian topological nodal phases. In particular we find that the gapped phase is characterized by a meron (half-skyrmion) type topology in which the cancellation of the orbital Zak phases by Zak phases of the bands contributes in forming the characterizing winding number of the acoustic bands. Using pump-probe techniques, we are able to extract the wave functions of the acoustic Bloch bands and demonstrate the non-trivial Euler topology via a direct observation of the meron geometry of these bands in the Brillouin zone, in addition to the detection of the acoustic bulk and edge dispersions. We finally observe a topological edge state in the gapped Euler phase which is a direct manifestation of the underlying cancellation of the Zak phases. Using three-dimensional (3D) sonic crystals as acoustic higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), we discover two-dimensional (2D) surface states described by spin-1 Dirac equations at the interfaces between the two sonic crystals with distinct topology but the same crystalline symmetry. We find that the Dirac mass can be tuned by the geometry of the two sonic crystals. The sign reversal of the Dirac mass reveals a surface topological transition where the surface states exhibit zero refractive index behavior. When the surface states are gapped, one-dimensional (1D) hinge states emerge due to the topology of the gapped surface states. We confirm experimentally the zero refractive index behavior and the emergent topological hinge states. Our study reveals a multidimensional Wannier orbital control that leads to extraordinary properties of surface states and unveils an interesting topological mechanism for the control of surface waves.

Topological phases of matter are featured with exotic edge states. However, the fractional topological numbers at edges, though predicted long ago by Jackiw and Rebbi, remain elusive in topological photonic systems. Here, we report on the observation of fractional topological numbers at the topological edges and corners in one- and two-dimensional photonic crystals. The fractional topological numbers are determined via the measurements of the photonic local density-of-states. In one-dimensional photonic crystals, we witness a rapid change of the fractional topological number at the edges rising from 0 to 1/2 when the photonic band gap experiences a topological transition, confirming the well-known prediction of Jackiw and Rebbi. In two-dimensional systems, we discover that the fractional topological number in the corner region varies from 0 to 1/2 and 1/4 in different photonic band gap phases. Disclinations are ubiquitous lattice defects existing in almost all crystalline materials. In two-dimensional nanomaterials, disclinations lead to the warping and deformation of the hosting material, yielding non-Euclidean geometries. However, such geometries have never been investigated experimentally in the context of topological phenomena. Here, by creating the physical realization of disclinations in conical and saddle-shaped acoustic systems, we demonstrate that disclinations can lead to topologically protected bound modes in non-Euclidean surfaces. In the designed honeycomb sonic crystal for p-orbital acoustic waves, non-Euclidean geometry interplay with the p-orbital physics and the band topology, showing intriguing emergent features as confirmed by consistent experiments and simulations. Thermodynamic uncertainty relation, quantifying a trade-off among average current, the associated fluctuation (precision), and entropy production (cost), has been formulated in nonequilibrium steady state and various stochastic systems. Herein, we study the thermodynamic uncertainty relation in generic thermoelectric heat engines under a periodic control protocol, by uncovering the underlying Berry-phase-like contribution. We show that our thermodynamic uncertainty relation breaks the seminal steady-state results, originating from the non-vanishing geometric effect. Furthermore, by deriving the consequent trade-off relation binding efficiency, power, and constancy, we prove that the periodically driven thermoelectric heat engines can generally outperform the steady-state analogies. The general bounds are illustrated by an analytically solvable two-terminal single quantum dot heat engine under the periodic modulation. In the past decade, a new research frontier emerges at the interface between physics and renewable energy, termed as the inelastic thermoelectric effects where inelastic transport processes play a key role. The study of inelastic thermoelectric effects broadens our understanding of thermoelectric phenomena and provides new routes towards high-performance thermoelectric energy conversion. Here, we review the main progress in this field, with a particular focus on inelastic thermoelectric effects induced by the electron-phonon and electron-photon interactions. We introduce the motivations, the basic pictures, and prototype models, as well as the unconventional effects induced by inelastic thermoelectric transport. These unconventional effects include the separation of heat and charge transport, the cooling by heating effect, the linear thermal transistor effect, nonlinear enhancement of performance, Maxwell demons, and cooperative effects. We find that elastic and inelastic thermoelectric effects are described by significantly different microscopic mechanisms and belong to distinct linear thermodynamic classes. We also pay special attention to the unique aspect of fluctuations in small mesoscopic thermoelectric systems. We consider the Dirac cones and higher-order topological phases in quasi-continuous media of classical waves (e.g., photonic and sonic crystals). Using sonic crystals as prototype examples, we revisit some of the known systems in the study of topological acoustics. We show the emergence of various Dirac cones and higher-order topological band gaps in the same motherboard by tuning the geometry of the system. We provide a pedagogical review of the underlying physics and methodology via the bulk-edge-corner correspondence, symmetry-based indicators, Wannier representations, filling anomaly, and fractional corner charges. In particular, the theory of the Dirac cones and the higher-order topology are put in the same framework. These examples and the underlying physics principles can be inspiring and useful in the future study of higher-order topological metamaterials.

Topological materials are often characterized by unique edge states which are in turn used to detect different topological phases in experiments. Recently, with the discovery of various higher-order topological insulators, such spectral topological characteristics are extended from edge states to corner states. However, the chiral symmetry protecting the corner states is often broken in genuine materials, leading to vulnerable corner states even when the higher-order topological numbers remain quantized and invariant. Here, we show that a local artificial gauge flux can serve as a robust probe of the Wannier type higher-order topological insulators which is effective even when the chiral symmetry is broken. The resultant observable signature is the emergence of the cyclic spectral flows traversing one or multiple band gaps. These spectral flows are associated with the local modes bound to the artificial gauge flux. This phenomenon is essentially due to the cyclic transformation of the Wannier orbitals when the local gauge flux acts on them. We extend topological Wannier cycles to systems with C2 and C3 symmetries and show that they can probe both the bulk and the edge Wannier centers, yielding rich topological phenomena.

The simulation of fermionic relativistic physics, e.g., Dirac and Weyl physics, has led to the discovery of many unprecedented phenomena in photonics, of which the optical-frequency realization is, however, still challenging. Here, surprisingly, we discover that the woodpile photonic crystals commonly used for optical frequency applications host exotic fermion-like relativistic degeneracies: a Dirac nodal line and a fourfold quadratic point, as protected by the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Deforming the woodpile photonic crystal leads to the emergence of type-II Dirac points from the fourfold quadratic point. Such type-II Dirac points can be detected by its anomalous refraction property which is manifested as a giant birefringence in a slab setup. Our findings provide a promising route towards 3D optical Dirac physics in all-dielectric photonic crystals.

Weyl points are the degenerate points in three-dimensional momentum space with nontrivial topological phase, which are usually realized in classical system with structure and symmetry designs. Here we proposed a one-dimensional layer-stacked photonic crystal using anisotropic materials to realize ideal type-II Weyl points without structure designs. The topological transition from two Dirac points to four Weyl points can be clearly observed by tuning the twist angle between layers. Besides, on the interface between the photonic type-II Weyl material and air, gappless surface states have also been demonstrated in an incomplete bulk bandgap. By breaking parameter symmetry, these ideal type-II Weyl points at the same frequency would transform into the non-ideal ones, and exhibit topological surface states with single group velocity. Our work may provide a new idea for the realization of photonic Weyl points or other semimetal phases by utilizing naturally anisotropic materials., Comment: 9pages; 4 figures

Twisted moir\'e superlattices (TMSs) are fascinating materials with exotic physical properties. Despite tremendous studies on electronic, photonic and phononic TMSs, it has never been witnessed that TMSs can exhibit higher-order band topology. Here, we report on the experimental observation of higher-order topological states in acoustic TMSs. By introducing moir\'e twisting in bilayer honeycomb lattices of coupled acoustic resonators, we find a regime with designed interlayer couplings where a sizable band gap with higher-order topology emerges. This higher-order topological phase host unique topological edge and corner states, which can be understood via the Wannier centers of the acoustic Bloch bands below the band gap. We confirm experimentally the higher-order band topology by characterizing the edge and corner states using acoustic pump-probe measurements. Gauge fields are at the heart of the fundamental science of our universe and various materials. For instance, Laughlin's gedanken experiment of gauge flux insertion played a major role in understanding the quantum Hall effects. Gauge flux insertion into a single unit-cell, though crucial for detecting exotic quantum phases and for the ultimate control of quantum dynamics and classical waves, however, has not yet been achieved in laboratory. Here, we report on the experimental realization of gauge flux insertion into a single plaquette in a lattice system with the gauge phase ranging from 0 to 2pi which is realized through a novel approach based on three consecutive procedures: the dimension extension, creating an engineered dislocation and the dimensional reduction. Furthermore, we discover that the single-plaquette gauge flux insertion leads to a new phenomenon termed as the topological Wannier cycles, i.e., the cyclic spectral flows across multiple band gaps which are manifested as the topological boundary states (TBSs) on the plaquette. Such topological Wannier cycles emerge only if the Wannier centers are enclosed by the flux-carrying plaquette. Exploiting acoustic metamaterials and versatile pump-probe measurements, we observe the topological Wannier cycles by detecting the TBSs in various ways and confirm the single-plaquette gauge flux insertion by measuring the gauge phase accumulation on the plaquette. Topological phases of matter lie at the heart of physics, connecting elegant mathematical principles to real materials that are believed to shape future electronic and quantum computing technologies. To date, studies in this discipline have almost exclusively been restricted to single-gap band topology because of the Fermi-Dirac filling effect. Here, we theoretically analyze and experimentally confirm a novel class of multi-gap topological phases, which we will refer to as non-Abelian topological semimetals, on kagome geometries. These unprecedented forms of matter depend on the notion of Euler class and frame charges which arise due to non-Abelian charge conversion processes when band nodes of different gaps are braided along each other in momentum space. We identify such exotic phenomena in acoustic metamaterials and uncover a rich topological phase diagram induced by the creation, braiding and recombination of band nodes. Using pump-probe measurements, we verify the non-Abelian charge conversion processes where topological charges of nodes are transferred from one gap to another. Moreover, in such processes, we discover symmetry-enforced intermediate phases featuring triply-degenerate band nodes with unique dispersions that are directly linked to the multi-gap topological invariants. Furthermore, we confirm that edge states can faithfully characterize the multi-gap topological phase diagram. We show that the Coulomb interaction between two circuits separated by an insulating layer leads to unconventional thermoelectric effects, such as the cooling by thermal current effect, the transverse thermoelectric effect and Maxwell's demon effect. The first refers to cooling in one circuit induced by the thermal current in the other circuit. The middle represents electric power generation in one circuit by the temperature gradient in the other circuit. The physical picture of Coulomb drag between the two circuits is first demonstrated for the case with one quantum dot in each circuits and then elaborated for the case with two quantum dots in each circuits. In the latter case, the heat exchange between the two circuits can vanish. Last, we also show that the Maxwell's demon effect can be realized in the four-terminal quantum dot thermoelectric system, in which the quantum system absorbs the heat from the high-temperature heat bath and releases the same heat to the low-temperature heat bath without any energy exchange with the two heat baths. We demonstrate that multiple higher-order topological transitions can be triggered via the continuous change of the geometry in kagome photonic crystals composed of three dielectric rods. By tuning a single geometry parameter, the photonic corner and edge states emerge or disappear with the higher-order topological transitions. Two distinct higher-order topological insulator phases and a normal insulator phase are revealed. Their topological indices are obtained from symmetry representations. A photonic analog of fractional corner charge is introduced to distinguish the two higher-order topological insulator phases. Our predictions can be readily realized and verified in configurable dielectric photonic crystals.

Hermitian theories play a major role in understanding the physics of most phenomena. It has been found only in the past decade that non-Hermiticity enables unprecedented effects such as exceptional points, spectral singularities and bulk Fermi arcs. Recent studies further show that non-Hermiticity can fundamentally change the topological band theory, leading to the non-Hermitian band topology and non-Hermitian skin effect, as confirmed in one-dimensional (1D) systems. However, in higher dimensions, these non-Hermitian effects remain unexplored in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the spin-polarized, higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect in two-dimensional (2D) acoustic metamaterials. Using a lattice of coupled whisper-gallery acoustic resonators, we realize a spinful 2D higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) where the spin-up and spin-down states are emulated by the anti-clockwise and clockwise modes, respectively. We find that the non-Hermiticity drives wave localizations toward opposite edge boundaries depending on the spin polarizations. More interestingly, for finite systems with both edge and corner boundaries, the higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect leads to wave localizations toward two corner boundaries for the bulk, edge and corner states in a spin-dependent manner. We further show that such a non-Hermitian skin effect enables rich wave manipulation through the loss configuration in each unit-cell. The reported spin-dependent, higher-order non-Hermitian skin effect reveals the interplay between higher-order topology and non-Hermiticity, which is further enriched by the spin degrees of freedom. This unveils a new horizon in the study of non-Hermitian physics and the design of non-Hermitian metamaterials.

Photonic crystals have been demonstrated as a versatile platform for the study of topological phenomena. The recent discovery of higher order topological insulators introduces new aspects of topological photonic crystals which are yet to be explored. Here, we propose a dielectric photonic crystal with unconventional higher order band topology. Besides the conventional spectral features of gapped edge states and in gap corner states, topological band theory predicts that the corner boundary of the higher-order topological insulator hosts a 2/3 fractional charge. We demonstrate that in the photonic crystal such a fractional charge can be verified from the local density of states of photons, through the concept of local spectral charge as an analog of the local electric charge due to band filling anomaly in electronic systems. Furthermore, we show that by introducing a disclination in the proposed photonic crystal, localized states and a 2/3 fractional spectral charge emerge around the disclination core, as the manifestation of the bulk disclination correspondence. The predicted effects can be readily observed in the state-of-the-art experiments and may lead to potential applications in integrated and quantum photonics.

Near-field thermophotovoltaic systems functioning at 400$\sim$900~K based on graphene-hexagonal-boron-nitride heterostructures and thin-film InSb $p$-$n$ junctions are investigated theoretically. The performances of two near-field systems with different emitters are examined carefully. One near-field system consists of a graphene-hexagonal-boron-nitride-graphene sandwich structure as the emitter, while the other system has an emitter made of the double graphene-hexagonal-boron-nitride heterostructure. It is shown that both systems exhibit higher output power density and energy efficiency than the near-field system based on mono graphene-hexagonal-boron-nitride heterostructure. The optimal output power density of the former device can reach to $1.3\times10^{5}~\rm{W\cdot m^{-2}}$, while the optimal energy efficiency can be as large as $42\%$ of the Carnot efficiency. We analyze the underlying physical mechanisms that lead to the excellent performances of the proposed near-field thermophotovoltaic systems. Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibit topologically-protected boundary states in multiple dimensions. We create the physical realization of the higher-order Weyl semimetal in a chiral phononic crystal with uniaxial screw symmetry. Using near-field spectroscopies, we observe the chiral Fermi arcs on the surfaces and a new type of hinge arc states on the hinge boundaries. These topological boundary arc states link the projections of Weyl points in different dimensions and directions, and hence demonstrate higher-order multidimensional topological physics in Weyl semimetals. Our study establishes the fundamental connection between higher-order topology and Weyl physics in crystalline materials and unveils a new horizon of higher-order topological semimetals where unprecedented materials such as higher-order topological nodal-lines may emerge.

Topological states nurtures the emergence of devices with unprecedented functions in photonics, plasmonics, acoustics and phononics. As one of the recently discovered members, higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) have been increasingly explored, featuring lower-dimensional topological boundary states, leading to rich mechanisms for topological manipulation, guiding and trapping of classical waves. Here, we provide an overview of current developments of HOTIs in classical waves including basic principles, unique physical properties, various experimental realizations, novel phenomena and potential applications. Higher-order topological insulators exhibit multidimensional topological physics and unique application values due to their ability of integrating stable boundary states at multiple dimensions in a single chip. However, for signal-processing applications in high-frequency mechanical systems, the current realizations of higher-order topological mechanical materials are still limited to large-scale systems for kilohertz or lower frequencies. Here, we report the experimental observation of a on-chip micromechanical metamaterial as higher-order topological insulator for high-frequency mechanical waves. The higher-order topological phononic band gap is induced by the band inversion at the Brillouin zone corner which is achieved by configuring the orientations of the elliptic pillars etched on the silicon chip. With consistent experiments and theory, we demonstrate the coexistence of topological edge and corner states in the megahertz frequency regime as induced by the higher-order band topology. The experimental realization of on-chip micromechanical metamaterials with higher-order topology opens a regime for applications based on megahertz mechanical waves in an integrated platform where the edge and corner states act as stable waveguides and resonators, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We show that in mesoscopic four-terminal thermoelectric devices with two electrodes (the source and the drain) and two heat baths, inelastic scattering processes can lead to unconventional thermoelectric transport. The source (or the drain) can be cooled by passing a thermal current between the two heat baths, with no net heat exchange between the heat baths and the electrodes. This effect, termed as cooling by heat current, is a mesoscopic heat drag effect. In addition, there is a transverse thermoelectric effect where electrical current and power can be generated by a transverse temperature bias (i.e., the temperature bias between the two heat baths). This transverse thermoelectric effect, originates from inelastic scattering processes, may have advantages for improved figures of merit and power factor due to spatial separation of charge and heat transport. We study the Onsager current-affinity relations, the linear-response transport properties, and the transverse thermoelectric figure of merit of the four-terminal thermoelectric devices for various system parameters. In addition, we investigate the efficiency and power of the cooling by transverse current effect in both linear and nonlinear transport regimes. We also demonstrate that by exploiting the inelastic transport in the quantum-dot four-terminal systems, a type of Maxwell's demon can be realized using nonequilibrium heat baths., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
