Effective data management plays a key role in oceanographic research as cruise-based data, collected from different laboratories and expeditions, are commonly compiled to investigate regional to global oceanographic processes. Here we describe new and updated best practice data standards for discrete chemical oceanographic observations, specifically those dealing with column header abbreviations, quality control flags, missing value indicators, and standardized calculation of certain properties. These data standards have been developed with the goals of improving the current practices of the scientific community and promoting their international usage. These guidelines are intended to standardize data files for data sharing and submission into permanent archives. They will facilitate future quality control and synthesis efforts and lead to better data interpretation. In turn, this will promote research in ocean biogeochemistry, such as studies of carbon cycling and ocean acidification, on regional to global scales. These best practice standards are not mandatory. Agencies, institutes, universities, or research vessels can continue using different data standards if it is important for them to maintain historical consistency. However, it is hoped that they will be adopted as widely as possible to facilitate consistency and to achieve the goals stated above.

Syntheses of carbonate chemistry spatial patterns are important for predicting ocean acidification impacts, but are lacking in coastal oceans. Here, we show that along the North American Atlantic and Gulf coasts the meridional distributions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and carbonate mineral saturation state (Ω) are controlled by partial equilibrium with the atmosphere resulting in relatively low DIC and high Ω in warm southern waters and the opposite in cold northern waters. However, pH and the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) do not exhibit a simple spatial pattern and are controlled by local physical and net biological processes which impede equilibrium with the atmosphere. Along the Pacific coast, upwelling brings subsurface waters with low Ω and pH to the surface where net biological production works to raise their values. Different temperature sensitivities of carbonate properties and different timescales of influencing processes lead to contrasting property distributions within and among margins.

Climatologies, which depict mean fields of oceanographic variables on a regular geographic grid, and atlases, which provide graphical depictions of specific areas, play pivotal roles in comprehending the societal vulnerabilities linked to ocean acidification (OA). This significance is particularly pronounced in coastal regions where most economic activities, such as commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture industries, occur. In this paper, we unveil a comprehensive data product featuring coastal ocean acidification climatologies and atlases, encompassing the fugacity of carbon dioxide, pH on the total scale, total hydrogen ion content, free hydrogen ion content, carbonate ion content, aragonite saturation state, calcite saturation state, Revelle factor, total dissolved inorganic carbon content, and total alkalinity content. These variables are provided on 1° × 1° spatial grids at 14 standardized depth levels, ranging from the surface to a depth of 500 m, along the North American ocean margins, defined as the region between the coastline and a distance of 200 nautical miles (∼370 km) offshore. The climatologies and atlases were developed using the World Ocean Atlas (WOA) gridding methods of the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) based on the recently released Coastal Ocean Data Analysis Product in North America (CODAP-NA), along with the 2021 update to the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project version 2 (GLODAPv2.2021) data product. The relevant variables were adjusted to the index year of 2010. Effective management of data is essential for successful ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) research, as it guarantees the long-term preservation, interoperability, discoverability, and accessibility of data. OAE research generates various types of data, such as discrete bottle measurements, autonomous measurements from surface underway and uncrewed platforms (e.g., moorings, Saildrones, gliders, Argo floats), physiological response studies (e.g., laboratory, mesocosm, and field experiments, and natural analogues), and model outputs. This paper addresses data and metadata standards for all these types of OAE data. As part of this study, existing data standards have been updated to accommodate OAE research needs, and a completely new physiological response data standard has been introduced. Additionally, an existing ocean acidification metadata template has been upgraded to be applicable to OAE research. This paper also presents controlled vocabularies for OAE research, including types of OAE studies, source materials for alkalinization, platforms, and instruments. These guidelines will aid OAE researchers in preparing their metadata and data for submission to permanent archives. Finally, the paper provides information about available data assembly centers that OAE researchers can utilize for their data needs. As two most important metrics for ocean acidification (OA), both pH and calcium carbonate mineral saturation states (Ω) respond sensitively to anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2). However, contrary to intuition, they are often out of phase in the global surface ocean, both spatially and seasonally. For example, during warm seasons, Ω is lowest at high‐latitude seas where there are very high pH values, challenging our understanding that high‐latitude seas are a bellwether for global OA. To explain this phenomenon, we separate spatial and seasonal variations of both pH and Ω into thermal components mainly associated with internal acid‐base equilibrium of seawater CO2 systems, and nonthermal components mainly associated with external CO2 addition/removal using a global surface ocean climatological data set. We find that surface pH change is controlled by the balance between its thermal and nonthermal components, which are out of phase but comparable in magnitude. In contrast, surface Ω change is dominated by its nonthermal components, with its thermal components in phase and significantly smaller in magnitude. These findings explain why surface ocean pH and Ω are often out of phase in spatial patterns and seasonal cycles. When pH is primarily controlled by nonthermal components e.g., gas exchange, mixing and biology, pH and Ω will be in phase because their nonthermal components are intrinsically in phase. In comparison, when pH is primarily controlled by thermal components for example, rapid seasonal cooling or warming, pH and Ω will be out of phase because thermal and nonthermal components of pH are out‐of‐phase in nature. Plain Language Summary: Although both pH and calcium carbonate mineral saturation states (Ω) are good metrics for ocean acidification, in the global surface ocean their spatial patterns and seasonal cycles are often out of phase, which appears counter intuitive. To explain this, we separate pH and Ω changes into thermal and nonthermal components. Thermal components are mainly related to the temperature driven internal acid‐base equilibrium of seawater CO2 systems. Nonthermal components are the remaining changes, reflecting the effects of other non‐temperature processes such as air‐sea gas exchange, mixing and biology or a combination of these processes. We find that pH is controlled by the balance between thermal and nonthermal components, which are out of phase but comparable in magnitude, while Ω is almost always dominated by nonthermal components. These findings explain why surface ocean pH and Ω are often out of phase in spatial patterns and seasonal cycles. When pH is more controlled by nonthermal components than thermal components, pH and Ω will be in phase since their nonthermal components are intrinsically in phase. In contrast, when pH is more controlled by thermal components, pH and Ω will be out of phase because of the out‐of‐phase between thermal and nonthermal components of pH. Internally-consistent, quality-controlled data products play a very important role in promoting regional to global research efforts to understand societal vulnerabilities to ocean acidification (OA). However, there are currently no such data products for the coastal ocean where most of the OA-susceptible commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture industries are located. In this collaborative effort, we compiled, quality controlled (QC), and synthesized two decades of discrete measurements of inorganic carbon system parameters, oxygen, and nutrient chemistry data from the U.S. North American continental shelves, to generate a data product called the Coastal Ocean Data Analysis Product for North America (CODAP-NA). There are few deep-water (> 1500 m) sampling locations in the current data product. As a result, cross-over analyses, which rely on comparisons between measurements on different cruises in the stable deep ocean, could not form the basis for cruise-to-cruise adjustments. For this reason, care was taken in the selection of data sets to include in this initial release of CODAP-NA, and only data sets from laboratories with known quality assurance practices were included. New consistency checks and outlier detections were used to QC the data. Future releases of this CODAP-NA product will use this core data product as the basis for secondary QC. We worked closely with the investigators who collected and measured these data during the QC process. This version of the CODAP-NA is comprised of 3,292 oceanographic profiles from 61 research cruises covering all continental shelves of North America, from Alaska to Mexico in the west and from Canada to the Caribbean in the east. Data for 14 variables (temperature; salinity; dissolved oxygen concentration; dissolved inorganic carbon concentration; total alkalinity; pH on the Total Scale; carbonate ion concentration; fugacity of carbon dioxide; and concentrations of silicate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, nitrate plus nitrite, and ammonium) have been subjected to extensive QC. Reefs and People at Risk: Increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere put shallow, warm-water coral reef ecosystems, and the people who depend upon them at risk from two key global environmental stresses: 1) elevated sea surface temperature (that can cause coral bleaching and related mortality), and 2) ocean acidification. These global stressors: cannot be avoided by local management, compound local stressors, and hasten the loss of ecosystem services. Impacts to people will be most grave where a) human dependence on coral reef ecosystems is high, b) sea surface temperature reaches critical levels soonest, and c) ocean acidification levels are most severe. Where these elements align, swift action will be needed to protect people’s lives and livelihoods, but such action must be informed by data and science. An Indicator Approach: Designing policies to offset potential harm to coral reef ecosystems and people requires a better understanding of where CO2-related global environmental stresses could cause the most severe impacts. Mapping indicators has been proposed as a way of combining natural and social science data to identify policy actions even when the needed science is relatively nascent. To identify where people are at risk and where more science is needed, we map indicators of biological, physical and social science factors to understand how human dependence on coral reef ecosystems will be affected by globally-driven threats to corals expected in a high-CO2 world. Western Mexico, Micronesia, Indonesia and parts of Australia have high human dependence and will likely face severe combined threats. As a region, Southeast Asia is particularly at risk. Many of the countries most dependent upon coral reef ecosystems are places for which we have the least robust data on ocean acidification. The role of transparency of information and incentives of traceability systems in resolving market failure is explored in this paper. Vegetable farmers' intention and behavior in traceability programs are analyzed as based on questionnaire survey of vegetable farmers in Zhejiang. The results show that farmers' participating intention for traceability programs and perception on traceability regulations are rather low. Whether or not to set up vegetable coding systems depended largely on the farmer's perception on the system. At present, the traceability system is dominated by the government. Lack of regulation, policy propaganda and government supervises have caused "the high quality not superior price", which will affect farmer's price expectation and reduce their enthusiasm in participating vegetable coding systems. The results also show that various forms of organizations in agricultural industrialization have important influences on farmer's participating intention and participative behaviors in vegetable coding systems. At the end of this paper, management implications are forwarded to facilitate the traceability system in China. Government should play important roles in the traceability systems. First of all, the government should strengthen policy propaganda and training work. Secondly, governmental departments should establish a complete system of legislations and regulations on the traceability systems. Finally, policymakers should gradually establish related incentive mechanisms to encourage the private sector to participate in the traceability systems.
