There is information redundancy in both spatial and spectral aspects of hyperspectral images. Considering a fixed proportion in sequential forward method may not find the optimal bands, we modify a band selection (BS) method by introducing a parameter to adjust the proportion of standard deviation to correlation, which may select key bands quickly and accurately. In addition, slant Haar type orthogonal transforms (SHTOT) have slant base vectors suitable to express the image brightness with gradual change. However, SHTOT have attracted little attention of scholars'. This paper introduces SHTOT with fast algorithm and varied parameters to the further compression of band images from a space point of view. Comparative experiments were performed with other BS strategies and state-of-the-art orthogonal transforms, such as DCT, DWT, Walsh, slant transform, Haar type orthogonal transforms. Final experimental results achieved on the commonly used data sets validate that the proposed approach has a faster speed, high compression ratio and good image quality. Additionally, it is more appropriate to choose different SHTOT for the specific application. The sparse SHTOT generated by certain parameter values are more suitable for the high requirement in image quality, but the compression ratio isn't very high, while dense SHTOT produced by another parameter values are fitter for the opposite cases. The use of solar energy has shown the fastest global growth of all renewable energy sources. Efforts towards careful evaluation are required to select optimal locations for the installation of photovoltaics (PV) because their effectiveness is strongly reliant on exposure to solar irradiation. Assessing the shadows cast by nearby buildings and vegetation is essential, especially at the city scale. Due to urban complexity, conventional methods using Digital Surface Models (DSM) overestimate solar irradiation in dense urban environments. To provide further insights into this dilemma, a new modeling technique was developed for integrated 3D city modeling and solar potential assessment on building roofs using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. The methodology used hotspot analysis to validate the workflow in both site and without-site contexts (e.g., trees that shield small buildings). Field testing was conducted, covering a total area of 4975 square miles and 10,489 existing buildings. The results demonstrate a considerable impact of large, dense trees on the solar irradiation received by smaller buildings. Considering the site's context, a mean annual solar estimate of 99.97 kWh/m2/year was determined. Without considering the site context, this value increased by 9.3% (as a percentage of total rooftops) to 109.17 kWh/m2/year, with a peak in July and troughs in December and January. The study suggests that both factors have a substantial impact on solar potential estimations, emphasizing the importance of carefully considering the shadowing effect during PV panel installation. The research findings reveal that 1517 buildings in the downtown area of Austin have high estimated radiation ranging from 4.7 to 6.9 kWh/m2/day, providing valuable insights for the identification of optimal locations highly suitable for PV installation. Background: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary intake of folate and niacin and diabetes risk in Chinese adults. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Demographic and anthropometric data along with information on dietary intake of vitamins were collected, and eligible participants were recruited to complete the questionnaire. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association between dietary intake of vitamins and diabetes risk, with adjustment for potential confounders. Non-linear dose-response relationships between dietary intake of folate and niacin and diabetes risk were also evaluated using adjusted restricted cubic splines. Results: Of the 3106 eligible participants, 15.9% had diabetes. Median folate was significantly higher in diabetic patients than in controls (32.030 vs. 27.600 gμ), while median niacin was significantly lower (7.000 vs. 7.900 mg). After controlling for potential confounders, binary logistic regression analysis showed that each unit increase in folate intake was associated with a 1.002-fold increase in the risk of developing diabetes (odds ratio (OR) = 1.002; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.000–1.004; P = 0.022), while each unit increase in niacin intake was associated with a 3.5% reduction in diabetes risk (OR = 0.965; 95% CI 0.944–0.986; P = 0.001). The plots of restricted cubic splines presented an atypical inverted U-shaped association between dietary intake of folate and diabetes risk. Conclusions: Diabetic patients had a low intake of vitamins, especially the B vitamins. Dietary intake of folate and niacin tended to be independently associated with the risk of diabetes. Gastrointestinal (GI) tumors have increasing incidence worldwide with their underlying mechanisms still not being fully understood. The use of tumor-educated platelets (TEPs) in liquid biopsy is a newly-emerged blood-based cancer diagnostic method. Herein, we aimed to investigate the genomic changes of TEPs in GI tumor development and their potential functions using network-based meta-analysis combined with bioinformatic methods. We used a total of three eligible RNA-seq datasets, which were integrated using multiple meta-analysis methods on the NetworkAnalyst website, and identified 775 DEGs (differentially expressed genes; 51 up-regulated and 724 down-regulated genes) in GI tumor relative to healthy control (HC) samples. These TEP DEGs were mostly enriched in bone marrow-derived cell types and associated with gene ontology (GO) of "carcinoma" and could affect pathways of "Integrated Cancer Pathway" and "Generic transcription pathway" respectively for highly and lowly expressed DEGs. Combined network-based meta-analysis and protein–protein interaction (PPI) analysis identified cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) and heat shock protein family A (Hsp70) member 5 (HSPA5) to be the hub genes with the highest degree centrality (DC), being up-regulated and down-regulated in TEPs, respectively. GO and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) results showed that the hub genes were primarily related to cell cycle and division, nucleobase-containing compound and carbohydrate transport, and endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response. Additionally, the nomogram model suggested that the two-gene signature owns extraordinary predictive power for GI tumor diagnosis. Further, the two-gene signature was demonstrated to have potential value for metastatic GI tumor diagnosis. The expression levels of CDK1 and HSPA5 in clinical platelet samples were verified to be consistent with the results from bioinformatic analysis. This study identified a two-gene signature encompassing CDK1 and HSPA5 that can be used as a biomarker for GI tumor diagnosis and maybe even cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT)-related prognosis. In this case, early screening and diagnosis is very important for overall tumor prognosis. Liquid biopsy emerged as a newly introduced minimally invasive approach for cancer diagnosis by detecting blood analytes as tumor-educated platelets (TEPs). Compared to tissue-based biopsies, liquid biopsies are less invasive, easy to access, convenient for serial tracking and better in eliminating intratumoral spatial heterogeneity. In recent years, specific gene signatures have been identified for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and prediction based on gene profiling data of TEPs. However, most of these studies were performed on the independent platelet profile datasets published on the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, which may harbor enormous heterogeneity. Additionally, few study revealed TEP mRNA functions and roles in GI tumors. Therefore, there's the need of using an integrated method to re-analyze these data, so we can gain new insights for GI tumor diagnosis. What is new? Herein, through network-based RNA-seq meta-analysis, we identified the CDK1-HSPA5 signature in TEPs that has the potential as a biomarker for diagnosing GI tumors. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that a shared transcriptional signature of tumor-educated platelets has been identified in human GI tumor patients based on meta-analysis. We also demonstrated that HSPA5 may have different roles in blood and tumor cells, so its expression deregulation in distinct types of tissue may have opposing diagnostic and prognostic values. Ag2ZnSnSe4 (AZTSe) thin films were synthesized using a simple solution approach combined with a post-selenization technique. A single phase of the AZTSe film with kesterite structure and high crystal quality was obtained at the optimized selenization temperature and time. The AZTSe film showed an optical bandgap of 1.4 eV, an n-type conduction with an electron concentration of 5.7 × 1015 cm−3, and a mobility of 9.1 cm2 V−1 s−1. An optimized n-type AZTSe film was fabricated on a p-GaN/sapphire to form an n-AZTSe/p-GaN heterojunction. The current–voltage measurement of the n-AZTSe/p-GaN heterojunction photodetector showed good rectification characteristics. The response wavelength of the photodetector covered a wide range from ultraviolet to infrared (370–960 nm). The response peak was located at 810 nm with a responsivity of 2.9 × 10−4 A/W. Drug resistance largely limits the efficacy and efficiency of chemotherapeutics, which is a first-line treatment for liver cancer, consequently triggering a complete failure in clinical application. There are numerous attempts in exploring potential strategies for avoiding drug resistance, but none of them has effectively addressed this problem. Therefore, novel molecular targets and agents proposed for addressing drug resistance are needed. This study established 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu)-resistant HepG2 cells (HepG2/R) and showed that a FOXM1-targeted peptide, P201, reactivated 5-Fu to attenuate HepG2/R cell viability, proliferation, migration and promote apoptosis. Moreover, both pharmacological studies and RNA genomic sequencing results uncovered that combination of P201 and 5-Fu notably decreased expressions of FOXM1, MDR1 and ABCG2 compared to 5-Fu alone, indicating P201 overcame 5-Fu resistance mainly through inhibiting FOXM1 and ABC transporters. Therefore, P201 could inhibit ABC transporters by targeting FOXM1 in HepG-2/R cells, overcoming 5-Fu resistance and enhancing anti-cancer drug sensitivity. FOXM1 may be a new target for overcoming 5-Fu resistance in HepG2 cell while the combination treatment of P201 and 5-Fu may serve as a potential strategy for treating liver cancer. In recent years, the primary reasons for low efficiency Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) solar cells have been attributed to Sn Zn defects and related defect clusters, as well as the balance of absorption layer bandgap for short-circuit current density (J sc) and open-circuit voltage (V oc). Ge gradient has been theoretically proven to be an effective strategy to change traditional flat bandgap structure and suppress Sn Zn defects and related defect clusters for improving the device performance of CZTSSe solar cells. However, the potential of Ge gradient has not been fully verified. In this work, Ge doping effectively reduces the formation of Sn Zn defects and [2Cu Zn + Sn Zn ] defect clusters in the CZTSSe absorption layer. In addition, it can be found that the construction of the V-type bandgap is the best solution for balancing between V oc and J sc. By using the bandgap grading strategy, the disparity between the recombination barrier of the junction and the optical bandgap's minimum value is widened, thereby obtaining a large V oc. The V-type doped device has the highest efficiency when V oc is 0.45 V, which can reach 8.03%. This Ge graded substitution method provides an alternative absorption layer structure for improving V oc and the preparation of future high-efficiency kesterite photovoltaic devices. Background and Purpose: Specific cellular functions mediated by GPCRs are often associated with signalling through a particular G protein or β‐arrestin. Here, we examine signalling through a GPCR, protease‐activated receptor 2 (PAR2), in a high‐grade serous ovarian cancer cell line (OV90). Experimental Approach Human ovarian cancer tissues (n = 1,200) and nine human ovarian cancer cell lines were assessed for PAR2 expression. PAR2 signalling mechanisms leading to cell migration and invasion were dissected using cellular assays, western blots, CRISPR‐Cas9 gene knockouts, pharmacological inhibitors of PAR2 and downstream signalling proteins in OV90 cancer cells. Key Results: PAR2 was significantly overexpressed in clinical ovarian cancer tissues and in OV90 ovarian cancer cells. PAR2 agonists, an endogenous protease (trypsin) and a synthetic peptide (2f‐LIGRL‐NH2), induced migration and invasion of OV90 ovarian cancer cells through activating a combination of Gαq/11, Gα12/13 and β‐arrestin1/2, but not Gαs or Gαi. This novel cooperative rather than parallel signalling resulted in downstream serial activation of Src kinases, then transactivation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), followed by downstream MEK–ERK1/2–FOS/MYC/STAT3–COX2 signalling. Either a PAR2 antagonist (I‐191), CRISPR‐Cas9 gene knockouts (PAR2 or Gα proteins or β‐arrestin1/2), or inhibitors of each downstream protein attenuated human ovarian cancer cell motility. Conclusion and Implications: This study highlights a novel shared signalling cascade, requiring each of Gαq/11, Gα12/13 and β‐arrestin1/2 for PAR2‐induced ovarian cancer cell migration and invasion. The attentional boost effect refers to the observation that when simultaneously performing a scene memory task and a target detection task, participants better remember scenes that appear at the same time as the detection target than scenes that coincide with distractors. The attentional boost effect is thought to result from a transient increase in attention during an acute behaviorally relevant event, resulting from a temporal orienting response. But can endogenous orienting to predictable targets trigger this response in the same manner as exogenous orienting to unpredictable targets? Until now, the attentional boost effect has only been tested under conditions in which the target's appearance was unpredictable. Because of the distinction between exogenous and endogenous orienting, target predictability could attenuate the attentional boost effect, or it could increase temporal orienting efficiency and enhance the effect. To test the attentional boost effect under predictable conditions, participants memorized scenes while responding to a target digit, 0, among a stream of digits appearing in the center of those scenes. In some blocks, the 0 predictably followed the digit sequence 3–2–1. In these predictable blocks, participants showed a robust attentional boost effect. This shows that both endogenous orienting to temporally predictable targets and exogenous orienting to unpredictable targets enhance concurrent task processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Describing what one saw to another person is common in everyday experience, such as spatial navigation and crime investigations. Past studies have examined the effects of recounting on one's own memory, neglecting an important function of memory recall in social communication. Here we report surprisingly low utility of one's verbal descriptions for others, even when visual memory for the stimuli has high capacity. Participants described photographs of common objects they had seen to enable judges to identify the target object from a foil in the same basic-level category. When describing from perception, participants were able to provide useful descriptions, allowing judges to accurately identify the target objects 87% of the time. Judges' accuracy decreased to just 57% when participants provided descriptions from memory acquired minutes ago, and to near chance (51.8%) when the verbal descriptions were based on memory acquired 24 hours ago. Comparison of participants' own identification accuracy with judges' accuracy suggests the presence of a common source of errors. This finding suggests that recall and recognition of visual objects share common memory sources. In addition, the low utility of one's verbal descriptions constrains theories about the extension of one's memory to the external world and has implications for eyewitness identification and laws governing it. In addition to conscious goals and stimulus salience, an observer's prior experience also influences selective attention. Early studies demonstrated experience-driven effects on attention mainly in the visual modality, but increasing evidence shows that experience drives auditory selection as well. We review evidence for a multiple-levels framework of auditory attention, in which experience-driven attention relies on mechanisms that acquire control settings and mechanisms that guide attention towards selected stimuli. Mechanisms of acquisition include cue–target associative learning, reward learning, and sensitivity to prior selection history. Once acquired, implementation of these biases can occur either consciously or unconsciously. Future research should more fully characterize the sources of experience-driven auditory attention and investigate the neural mechanisms used to acquire and implement experience-driven auditory attention. In addition to conscious goals and physical salience, experience also influences auditory attention. Experience-driven attention operates at multiple levels, including an acquisition level involving the sources of attentional control and an implementation level involving attentional guidance. There are many forms of experience-driven attention, including cue–target associative learning, reward learning, and selection history. These categories represent dissociable effects that rely on a complex of different learning mechanisms. Experience can both consciously and unconsciously influence attentional guidance. In some cases, observers guide attention consciously based on explicit recognition of their experiences. When searching for an object in a familiar environment, we may automatically orient to locations where this object was often placed previously. Contextual cueing refers to the guidance of attention by repeated search context. As an implicit mechanism with high capacity, contextual cueing may be important for people whose cognitive function is compromised, immature, or in decline. Here we review and synthesize the last two decades of research on contextual cueing, focusing on neuropsychological and developmental evidence. Contextual cueing is largely preserved in young children, older adults, and individuals with autism spectrum disorders or mild intellectual impairment. Some, though not all, studies find a deficit in contextual cueing in amnesic patients, patients with basal ganglia damage, children with ADHD, and individuals with psychiatric disorders. Although the medial temporal lobe, the basal ganglia, and the posterior parietal cortex are implicated in contextual cueing, definitive evidence for their necessity is lacking. Simple displays of moving shapes can give rise to percepts of animacy. These films elicit impoverished narratives in some individuals, such as those with an autism spectrum disorder. However, the verbal demand of producing a narrative limits the utility of this task. Non-verbal tasks have so far focused on detecting animate objects. Lacking from previous research is a task that relies less on verbal description but more than animacy perception. Here, we presented data using a new social interaction judgement task. Healthy young adults viewed the Heider and Simmel movie and pressed one button whenever they perceived social interaction and another button when no social interaction was perceived. We measured the time points at which social judgement began, the fluctuation of the judgement in relation to stimulus kinematic properties, and the overall mean of social judgement. Participants with higher autism traits reported lower levels of social interaction. Reversing the film in time produced lower social interaction judgements, though the temporal profile was preserved. Our study suggests that both low-level motion characteristics and high-level understanding contribute to social interaction judgement. Being asked to recount a visual memory is common in educational settings, spatial navigation, and crime investigation. Previous studies show that recounting one's memory can benefit subsequent memory, but most of this work either used verbal materials or conflated category memory with memory for visual details. To test whether recounting may introduce visually-specific interference effects, we tested people's memory for photographs of objects, but introduced an intervening phase in which people described their memory. We separated memory for the specific exemplar from memory for the basic-level category. Contrary to recent findings on maps and colours, the intervening retrieval practice did not consistently strengthen exemplar memory of objects. Instead, recounting one's visual memory appeared to introduce interference that sometimes cancelled the benefit of increased retrieval effort. Delaying the final memory test by 24 hr increased the benefit of retrieval practice. These findings suggest that intervening retrieval has multiple effects on visual memory. Evidence suggests that prior attentional selection guides visuospatial attention without conscious intent. Yet few studies have examined whether selection history influences auditory spatial attention. Using a novel auditory search task, we investigated two selection history effects: short-term intertrial location priming and long-term location probability learning. Participants reported whether a spoken number, occurring simultaneously with three spoken letter distractors presented from different locations, was odd or even. We first showed that endogenous attention guided by informative arrows facilitated search in our paradigm. Next, intertrial location priming was assessed by comparing reaction time when target location repeated across recent trials to when target location changed. Unlike visual search, auditory search showed little evidence of intertrial location priming. In a separate experiment, we investigated location probability learning by making targets disproportionately likely to appear in one location. Results showed location probability learning: participants were faster when targets occurred in the high-probability location than in the low-probability locations. To our knowledge, this is the first study of intertrial location priming or long-term location probability learning in auditory search. The findings have implications for the role of spatial relevance in auditory attention and suggest that long-term attentional learning and short-term priming rely on separate mechanisms. Frequently finding a visual search target in one region of space induces a spatial attentional bias toward that region. Past studies on this effect typically tested fewer than 20 participants. The small sample prevents an investigation of two properties of learning: visual field uniformity and role of explicit awareness. Pooling data from multiple studies, here we examined location probability learning from ~120,000 visual search trials across 420 participants. Participants performed a serial search task. Unbeknownst to them, the target was disproportionately likely to appear in one visual quadrant. Location probability learning (LPL) was measured as the difference in reaction time to targets in the high-probability “rich” quadrant and the low-probability “sparse” quadrants. Results showed a lack of visual field effect. LPL was equivalent for “rich” quadrant in the upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Learning did not induce a hotspot diagonal to the “rich” quadrant. To the contrary, RT was the longest in the diagonal quadrant. Recognition rate of the “rich” quadrant was above chance. However, recognition accuracy was unrelated to the size of LPL. Implicit learning induces visual-field-independent changes in spatial attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We fabricated the (Cu 1-x Ag x ) 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CAZTSSe) (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) alloy thin films by a simple solution approach combined with a post-selenization technique, and investigated the influence of Ag contents on structure, morphology, band gap as well as electrical property of CZTSSe thin films. The results showed that Cu + cation in Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) films was replaced by Ag + cation, forming homogeneous CAZTSSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) alloy thin films. The crystal structure and the band gap of CAZTSSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) alloy thin films are influenced by Ag/(Cu+Ag) ratios. The incorporation of Ag is found to accelerate the grain growth and increase the grain size. The optical band gap of CAZTSSe alloy thin films can be continuously tuned in the range of as Ag content from x = 0 to x = 0.15. Furthermore, Hall measurement results indicate that all CAZTSSe alloy thin films showed p-type conductivity and hole concentration decreased with the increasing the Ag contents. In the present work, we fabricated solid solution of Cd in the Cu 2 SnS 3 (CTS:Cd) and Cu 2 CdSnS 4 (CCTS) thin film by Cd doping in the Cu 2 SnS 3 (CTS) with a simple solution approach and sulfurization process, and investigated the effects of Cd content and sulfurization on crystalline structure and quality as well as bandgap (Eg). It was found that a face-centered cubic CTS (C-CTS) film with Eg of 0.82 eV can be prepared by the solution approach. The C-CTS transformed into CTS:Cd with tetragonal structures (T-CTS:Cd) when the Cd contents are in the range of 4.18–13.38 at%, and further transform into T-CTS:Cd and CdS as the Cd content is between 13.38 and 19.57 at%. The E g can be tuned from 0.82 to 1.26 eV by changing the Cd doping content for the as-fabricated samples. The sulfurization process made the C-CTS dissolve into C-CTS and T-CTS, and the T-CTS:Cd transformed into the CCTS in the Cd content of 7.30–13.54 at%. A single phase of CCTS film with Eg of 1.37 eV was obtained in the content of 10.18–13.54 at%. The sulfurization process can change crystalline structure, improve crystalline quality and tune band gap of the CTS and CCTS films at the same Cd doping content compared with the as-prepared films. The plunger is the core component of the sucker rod pump. Its rapid wear and premature failure severely limit the efficiency and productivity of oil and gas production. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, due to their high hardness, high wear resistance and low friction coefficient, have great research prospects for the development of long-life and high-reliability sucker-rod pump plungers in oil production environments. Therefore, in this paper, to simulate the friction behaviour and influence mechanism of the DLC film in an oil production environment, three molecular dynamics friction models of Fe–Fe, DLC–Fe and DLD–DLC were established. It is found that with increasing load, the friction coefficients of DLC–Fe and DLD–DLC are smaller than that of Fe–Fe in the light oil reservoir environment. In particular, when the mating pair is DLC–DLC, a superlubricity state of 0.0007 is even achieved. This will greatly increase the service life of the plunger of the sucker rod pump in the oil production environment. Further investigation revealed that the low friction of the DLC film in an oil production environment is mainly due to the weak interaction between light oil molecules and the DLC layer, so that it does not cause adhesive wear with the friction surface while lubricating the surface. Age-related decline is pervasive in tasks that require explicit learning and memory, but such reduced function is not universally observed in tasks involving incidental learning. It is unknown if habitual attention, involving incidental probabilistic learning, is preserved in older adults. Previous research on habitual attention investigated contextual cuing in young and older adults, yet contextual cuing relies not only on spatial attention but also on context processing. Here we isolated habitual attention from context processing in young and older adults. Using a challenging visual search task in which the probability of finding targets was greater in 1 of 4 visual quadrants in all contexts, we examined the acquisition, persistence, and spatial-reference frame of habitual attention. Although older adults showed slower visual search times and steeper search slopes (more time per additional item in the search display), like young adults they rapidly acquired a strong, persistent search habit toward the high-probability quadrant. In addition, habitual attention was strongly viewer-centered in both young and older adults. The demonstration of preserved viewer-centered habitual attention in older adults suggests that it may be used to counter declines in controlled attention. We examined the mixed-category memory advantage for faces and scenes to determine how domain-specific cortical resources constrain visual working memory. Consistent with previous findings, visual working memory for a display of 2 faces and 2 scenes was better than that for a display of 4 faces or 4 scenes. This pattern was unaffected by manipulations of encoding duration. However, the mixed-category advantage was carried solely by faces: Memory for scenes was not better when scenes were encoded with faces rather than with other scenes. The asymmetry between faces and scenes was found when items were presented simultaneously or sequentially, centrally, or peripherally, and when scenes were drawn from a narrow category. A further experiment showed a mixed-category advantage in memory for faces and bodies, but not in memory for scenes and objects. Recent reports have suggested that the attended features of an item may be rapidly forgotten once they are no longer relevant for an ongoing task (attribute amnesia). This finding relies on a surprise memory procedure that places high demands on declarative memory. We used intertrial priming to examine whether the representation of an item's identity is lost completely once it becomes task irrelevant. If so, then the identity of a target on one trial should not influence performance on the next trial. In 3 experiments, we replicated the finding that a target's identity is poorly recognized in a surprise memory test. However, we also observed location and identity repetition priming across consecutive trials. These data suggest that, although explicit recognition on a surprise memory test may be impaired, some information about a particular target's identity can be retained after it is no longer needed for a task. [Display omitted] Chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract is a feature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Targeting inflammatory signaling represents promising strategy for IBD treatment regimens. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model was established in mice. Histopathological examinations were conducted by H&E staining and IHC staining. IL-1β, IL-10, and TNF-α were tested by ELISA kits. TargetScan was used to predict miRNAs that target PPARGC1A and luciferase activity assay was performed to validate the predicted binding. DSS-induced acute colitis model was successfully established in mice; photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment partially improved DSS-induced colonic damages and cell inflammation. Microarray assays and integrative bioinformatics analysis identified PPARG coactivator 1 alpha (PPARGC1A) as a significantly differentially-expressed gene in PDT-treated IBD compared with non-treated IBD. PPARGC1A expression was downregulated in IBD clinical samples, DSS-induced colitis mice colons, and DSS-stimulated colonic epithelial cells, whereas partially upregulated by PDT treatment in DSS-stimulated cells. Single DSS stimulation significantly promoted cellular inflammation; PDT partially attenuated, whereas sh-PPARGC1A transduction further enhanced DSS effects on cancer cell inflammation. In colitis mice, DSS decreased PPRA-α and PPRA-γ proteins in mice colons; the in vivo effects of DSS were partially attenuated by PDT treatment, whereas amplified by sh-PPARGC1A transduction. Upstream miR-301a-3p targeted and inhibited PPARGC1A expression. Collectively, PPARGC1A, which is downregulated in DSS-induced acute colitis and DSS-stimulated colonic epithelial cells, could be upregulated by PDT treatment. Objective. To develop a quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single-marker (QAMS) method for the simultaneous determination of polar active components in Fructus Corni. Methods. Loganin was selected as the internal reference, and the relative correction factors (RCFs) of gallic acid, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural, morroniside, sweroside, cornin, 7α-O-methylmorroniside, 7β-O-methylmorroniside, 7α-O-ethylmorroniside, 7β-O-ethylmorroniside, and cornuside were established. The contents of multicomponents were then calculated based on their RCFs, respectively. Contents of the 11 components were also calculated by external standard method and compared with those of the QAMS method. Results. The contents of the 11 components in 21 crude and 10 processed Fructus Corni products were measured. No significant difference was found in the quantitative results of the QAMS and external standard methods. Conclusion. Perceptual similarity is an important property of multiple stimuli. Its computation supports a wide range of cognitive functions, including reasoning, categorization, and memory recognition. It is important, therefore, to determine why previous research has found conflicting effects of inter-item similarity on visual working memory. Studies reporting a similarity advantage have used simple stimuli whose similarity varied along a featural continuum. Studies reporting a similarity disadvantage have used complex stimuli from either a single or multiple categories. To elucidate stimulus conditions for similarity effects in visual working memory, we tested memory for complex stimuli (faces) whose similarity varied along a morph continuum. Participants encoded 3 morphs generated from a single face identity in the similar condition, or 3 morphs generated from different face identities in the dissimilar condition. After a brief delay, a test face appeared at one of the encoding locations for participants to make a same/different judgment. Two experiments showed that similarity enhanced memory accuracy without changing the response criterion. These findings support previous computational models that incorporate featural variance as a component of working memory load. Recent research reported that task-irrelevant colors captured attention if these colors previously served as search targets and received high monetary reward. We showed that both monetary reward and value-independent mechanisms influenced selective attention. Participants searched for two potential target colors among distractor colors in the training phase. Subsequently, they searched for a shape singleton in a testing phase. Experiment 1 found that participants were slower in the testing phase if a distractor of a previous target color was present rather than absent. Such slowing was observed even when no monetary reward was used during training. Experiment 2 associated monetary rewards with the target colors during the training phase. Participants were faster finding the target associated with higher monetary reward. However, reward training did not yield value-dependent attentional capture in the testing phase. Attentional capture by the previous target colors was not significantly greater for the previously high-reward color than the previously low or no-reward color. These findings revealed both the power and limitations of monetary reward on attention. Although monetary reward can increase attentional priority for the high-reward target during training, subsequent attentional capture effects may not be reward-based, but reflect, in part, attentional capture by previous targets. This study documented the relative strength of task goals, visual statistical learning, and monetary reward in guiding spatial attention. Using a difficult T-among-L search task, we cued spatial attention to one visual quadrant by (i) instructing people to prioritize it (goal-driven attention), (ii) placing the target frequently there (location probability learning), or (iii) associating that quadrant with greater monetary gain (reward-based attention). Results showed that successful goal-driven attention exerted the strongest influence on search RT. Incidental location probability learning yielded a smaller though still robust effect. Incidental reward learning produced negligible guidance for spatial attention. The 95 % confidence intervals of the three effects were largely nonoverlapping. To understand these results, we simulated the role of location repetition priming in probability cuing and reward learning. Repetition priming underestimated the strength of location probability cuing, suggesting that probability cuing involved long-term statistical learning of how to shift attention. Repetition priming provided a reasonable account for the negligible effect of reward on spatial attention. Visuospatial attention is strongly biased to locations that had frequently contained a search target before. However, the function of this bias depends on the reference frame in which attended locations are coded. Previous research has shown a striking difference between tasks administered on a computer monitor and those administered in a large environment, with the former inducing viewer-centered learning and the latter environment-centered learning. Why does environment-centered learning fail on a computer? Here, we tested 3 possibilities: differences in spatial scale, the nature of task, and locomotion may each influence the reference frame of attention. Participants searched for a target on a monitor placed flat on a stand. On each trial, they stood at a different location around the monitor. The target was frequently located in a fixed area of the monitor, but changes in participants' perspective rendered this area random relative to the participants. Under incidental learning conditions, participants failed to acquire environment-centered learning even when (a) the task and display resembled those of a large-scale task and (b) the search task required locomotion. The difficulty in inducing environment-centered learning on a computer underscores the egocentric nature of visual attention. Domain-general theories of autism rest on evidence that the disorder impacts not only social communication skills but also nonsocial functions such as memory. Yet recognition memory deficits have been inconsistently documented, especially for stimuli other than faces and sentences. Here we tested school-age children with high-functioning autism (ASD) and IQ, and age-matched comparison children on a visual long-term memory task involving more than 100 photographs of objects, faces, cats, houses, and abstract stimuli. Children viewed each photograph for 2 s. After a 10-min filled delay, we assessed recognition memory for object category as well as for specific exemplars. Data supported the presence of a high-capacity and high-precision visual memory in children with ASD. Both category memory and exemplar memory accuracies were above 90% for categories for which a single exemplar had been encoded. When more exemplars per category were encoded, category memory improved, but exemplar memory declined. An exception was face memory, which remained highly accurate even after many faces had been encoded. Recent empirical and theoretical work has depicted a close relationship between visual attention and visual working memory. For example, rehearsal in spatial working memory depends on spatial attention, whereas adding a secondary spatial working memory task impairs attentional deployment in visual search. These findings have led to the proposal that working memory is attention directed toward internal representations. Here, we show that the close relationship between these 2 constructs is limited to some but not all forms of spatial attention. In 5 experiments, participants held color arrays, dot locations, or a sequence of dots in working memory. During the memory retention interval, they performed a T-among-L visual search task. Crucially, the probable target location was cued either implicitly through location probability learning or explicitly with a central arrow or verbal instruction. Our results showed that whereas imposing a visual working memory load diminished the effectiveness of explicit cuing, it did not interfere with probability cuing. Statistical regularities in our environment enhance perception and modulate the allocation of spatial attention. Surprisingly little is known about how learning-induced changes in spatial attention transfer across tasks. In this study, we investigated whether a spatial attentional bias learned in one task transfers to another. Most of the experiments began with a training phase in which a search target was more likely to be located in one quadrant of the screen than in the other quadrants. An attentional bias toward the high-probability quadrant developed during training (probability cuing). In a subsequent, testing phase, the target's location distribution became random. In addition, the training and testing phases were based on different tasks. Probability cuing did not transfer between visual search and a foraging-like task. However, it did transfer between various types of visual search tasks that differed in stimuli and difficulty. These data suggest that different visual search tasks share a common and transferrable learned attentional bias. Purpose: To investigate the vaccine effect of a replication-defective recombinant adenovirus 5 (rAd5)-based nanocomplex with chitooligosaccharides (Oligo) and mannosylated polyethyleneimine-triethyleneglycol (mPEI) as adjuvants for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Methods: Physical characteristics were determined through detecting the size, zeta potential and morphology of Oligo-mPEI-rAd5 nanocomplex, and in vitro vaccine uptake and transduction efficiency were estimated. Nanocomplexes were then administered intranasally to Balb/c mice to evaluate in vivo rAd5 residence in nasal cavity and HIVgag-specific immune responses using cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL), intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) and ELISA assay. Results: The mucoadhesivity of Oligo prolonged nasal residence time, while the dendritic cell (DC) specificity of mPEI improved vaccine uptake. These two adjuvants jointly enhanced transduction efficiency of rAd5. Oligo-mPEI-rAd5 nanocomplex elicited potent HIVgag-specific CTL response and increased IFN-γ positive CD8T and IL-4 positive CD4T cells, indicating high cellular immune responses. This vaccine candidate also led to strong humoral immune responses (IgG/IgG1/IgG2a) with balanced Th1/Th2 CD4T cell activity. Moreover, mice nasally immunized with Oligo-mPEI-rAd5 showed higher levels of SIgA in nasal washes than did mice immunized with rAd5. Conclusions: Intranasal delivery of Oligo-mPEI-rAd5 with a prime-boost regimen is a potential immunization for HIV infection, inducing HIVgag-specific cellular, humoral and mucosal immune responses. In this response to Wyble and Chen's (2017) commentary on attribute amnesia, we hope to achieve several goals. First, we clarify how our view diverges from that described by Wyble and Chen. We argue that because the surprise memory test is disruptive, it is an insensitive tool for measuring the persistence of recently attended target attributes in memory. Second, we identify points of agreement between our view and that of Wyble and Chen. Like them, we believe that the strength of a mental representation is a critical factor in determining whether the representation persists long enough to be used in a surprise recognition task. We also agree that consolidation is one means of strengthening this representation. Finally, we suggest questions that should be addressed to clarify the factors that determine whether attended information can be reported in a surprise memory test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the attentional boost effect, participants encode images into memory as they perform an unrelated target-detection task. Later memory is better for images that coincided with a target rather than a distractor. This advantage could reflect a broad processing enhancement triggered by target detection, but it could also reflect inhibitory processes triggered by distractor rejection. To test these possibilities, in four experiments we acquired a baseline measure of image memory when neither a target nor a distractor was presented. Participants memorized faces presented in a continuous series (500- or 100-ms duration). At the same time, participants monitored a stream of squares. Some faces appeared on their own, and others coincided with squares in either a target or a nontarget color. Because the processes associated with both target detection and distractor rejection were minimized when faces appeared on their own, this condition served as a baseline measure of face encoding. The data showed that long-term memory for faces coinciding with a target square was enhanced relative to faces in both the baseline and distractor conditions. Abstract: (FePt)100−x Au x (x=0, 5, 10, and 20) nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol–gel method, and effects of Au content on the structural and magnetic properties of samples were investigated. Au doping reduced the phase transition temperature from face-centered cubic (FCC) to face-centered tetragonal (FCT) structure. In addition, additive Au promotes the chemical ordering of L10 FePt NPs and increases the grain size of L10 FePt NPs. When Au content increased from 0 to 10at%, the coercivity (H c ) increased due to the increase in degree of ordering S and grain size of L10 FePt NPs. Visual attention and visual working memory exert severe capacity limitations on cognitive processing. Impairments in both functions may exacerbate the social and communication deficits seen in children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study characterizes spatial working memory and visual attention in school-age children with high-functioning autism. Children with ASD, and age, gender, and IQ-matched typically developing (TD) children performed 2 tasks: a spatial working memory task and an attentive tracking task. Compared with TD children, children with ASD showed a more pronounced deficit in the spatial working memory task than the attentive tracking task, even though the latter placed significant demands on sustained attention, location updating, and distractor inhibition. Because both groups of children were sensitive to configuration mismatches between the sample and test arrays, the spatial working memory deficit was not because of atypical organization of spatial working memory. These findings show that attention and working memory are dissociable, and that children with ASD show a specific deficit in buffering visual information across temporal discontinuity. Abstract: The Fe x Pt100−x nanoparticles (NPs) with different nominal atomic rations (30≤x≤80) were synthesized at 700°C by the sol–gel method. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the samples were investigated. When the Fe content in the Fe–Pt alloy NPs was 30at%, FePt3 NPs were successfully synthesized. With the increase in Fe content up to 50at%, it was found that the superlattice reflections (001) and (110) appeared, which indicated the formation of the L10-FePt phase. Meanwhile, the FePt3 fraction was reduced. When the Fe content increased to 60at%, single-phase L10-FePt NPs were synthesized. The coercivity (Hc), saturation magnetization (Ms) and chemical order parameter S for Fe60Pt40 NPs were as high as 10,200Oe, 17.567emu/g and 0.928, respectively. With the further increase of the Fe content to 80at%, only Fe3Pt phase existed and the Hc of the Fe3Pt NPs decreased drastically to 360Oe. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

It is widely claimed that interactions among simultaneously presented visual stimuli are suppressive and that these interactions primarily occur when stimuli fall within the same receptive field (Desimone and Duncan 1995). Here, we show evidence for a novel form of interaction between simultaneously presented but distant stimuli that does not fit either pattern. To examine interactions between simultaneously presented stimuli, we measure the response to a single stimulus as a function of whether or not other stimuli are also presented simultaneously, and we further ask how the response to a given stimulus is affected by whether the simultaneously present stimuli are identical or different from each other. Our method reveals a new phenomenon of "redundancy gain:" the visual response to a stimulus is higher when accompanied by identical stimuli than when that stimulus is presented alone, even though the stimuli are displayed in separate visual quadrants. This pattern is observed throughout the visual hierarchy, including V1 and V2, and we show that it is distinct from the wellknown simultaneous suppression effect (Kastner et al. 1998). We propose that the redundancy gain in early retinotopic cortex results from feedback from higher visual areas and may underlie perceptual averaging and other ensemble coding phenomena observed behaviorally. It is widely suggested that ASD is characterized by atypical local/global processing, but the published findings are contradictory. In an effort to resolve this question, we tested a large group of children on both a free-choice task and an instructed task using hierarchical local-global stimuli. We find that although children with autism showed a reduced preference to report global properties of a stimulus when given a choice, their ability to process global properties when instructed to do so is unimpaired. These findings support prior claims that people with ASD show a disinclination, not a disability, in global processing, and highlight the broader question of whether other characteristics of autism may also reflect disinclinations rather than disabilities. Osimertinib, as the third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), is a first-line molecularly targeted drug for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the emergence of therapeutic resistance to osimertinib markedly impairs its efficiency and efficacy, leading to the failure of clinical applications. Novel molecular targets and drugs are urgently needed for reversing osimertinib resistance in NSCLC. Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) that belongs to a subfamily of G protein-coupled receptors can stimulate the transactivation of EGFR to regulate multiple cellular signalling, actively participating in tumour progression. This study firstly discovered that PAR2 expression was notably enhanced when NSCLC cells became resistant to osimertinib. A PAR2 inhibitor facilitated osimertinib to attenuate EGFR transactivation, ERK phosphorylation, EMT and PD-L1 expression which were associated to osimertinib resistance. The combination of the PAR2 inhibitor and osimertinib also notably blocked cell viability, migration, 3D sphere formation and in vivo tumour growth whereas osimertinib itself lost such inhibitory effects in osimertinib-resistant NSCLC cells. Importantly, this reversal effect of PAR2 blockade was uncovered to depend on ERK-mediated EMT and PD-L1, since inhibition of β-arrestin or ERK, which could be modulated by PAR2, sensitized osimertinib to prevent EMT, PD-L1 expression and consequently overcame osimertinib resistance. Thus, this study demonstrated that PAR2 antagonism could limit ERK-mediated EMT and immune checkpoints, consequently attenuating EGFR transactivation and reactivate osimertinib. It suggested that PAR2 may be a novel drug target for osimertinib resistance, and PAR2 inhibition may be a promising strategy candidate for reversing EGFR-TKI resistance in NSCLC. • Targeting PAR2 overcame osimertinib resistance in NSCLCs. • PAR2 inhibition reactivated osimertinib to attenuate in vivo NSCLC tumour growth. • PAR2 modulated osimertinib resistance via ERK-mediated EMT and PD-L1. Contextual cueing refers to the cueing of spatial attention by repeated spatial context. Previous studies have demonstrated distinctive properties of contextual cueing by background scenes and by an array of search items. Whereas scene-based contextual cueing reflects explicit learning of the scene-target association, array-based contextual cueing is supported primarily by implicit learning. In this study, we investigated the interaction between scene-based and array-based contextual cueing. Participants searched for a target that was predicted by both the background scene and the locations of distractor items. We tested three possible patterns of interaction: (1) The scene and the array could be learned independently, in which case cueing should be expressed even when only one cue was preserved; (2) the scene and array could be learned jointly, in which case cueing should occur only when both cues were preserved; (3) overshadowing might occur, in which case learning of the stronger cue should preclude learning of the weaker cue. In several experiments, we manipulated the nature of the contextual cues present during training and testing. We also tested explicit awareness of scenes, scene-target associations, and arrays. The results supported the overshadowing account: Specifically, scene-based contextual cueing precluded array-based contextual cueing when both were predictive of the location of a search target. How does responding to an object affect explicit memory for visual information? The close theoretical relationship between action and perception suggests that items that require a response should be better remembered than items that require no response. However, conclusive evidence for this claim is lacking, as semantic coherence, category size, and trial frequency often differ between stimuli that require a response and those that do not. Here we showed that memory is affected by response requirements, even when confounding factors were eliminated. Participants viewed a stream of images and encoded them into memory. During encoding, some images required a response, whereas others did not. Although all images were task relevant, images that were overtly responded to (e.g., with a button press) were better remembered than those that were not. However, the action itself was not critical to the memory advantage. Covertly counted images were better remembered than those that were not. Moreover, when participants pressed a button for most images, images that required withholding a button press were remembered better than the others. The ordered face-centered tetragonal (FCT) FePt nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized by the modified sol–gel method. The relationship between the annealing temperature (400, 500, 600 and 700°C) and the structure and magnetic properties of the FePt NPs was discussed. And the possible growth mechanism was given in terms of atomic diffusion. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed the dehydration of various water molecules and combustion/decomposition of organic groups at the temperature below 600°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that as the annealing temperature increased to 500°C, the L10 FePt NPs were formed as was indicated by the appearance of superlattice peaks (001) and (110). Moreover, based on the XRD results, we found that the chemical order parameter S increased with the increase of the annealing temperature. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed that the NPs produced at 700°C had a mean diameter of 14nm. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns of the samples annealed at 700°C further demonstrated the synthesis of the L10 FePt NPs. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that no impurity phases existed in FePt NPs. The maximum coercivity (10,148Oe) was obtained for the sample annealed at 700°C. The time course of attention is a major characteristic on which different types of attention diverge. In addition to explicit goals and salient stimuli, spatial attention is influenced by past experience. In contextual cueing, behaviorally relevant stimuli are more quickly found when they appear in a spatial context that has previously been encountered than when they appear in a new context. In this study, we investigated the time that it takes for contextual cueing to develop following the onset of search layout cues. In three experiments, participants searched for a T target in an array of Ls. Each array was consistently associated with a single target location. In a testing phase, we manipulated the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the repeated spatial layout and the search display. Contextual cueing was equivalent for a wide range of SOAs between 0 and 1,000 ms. The lack of an increase in contextual cueing with increasing cue durations suggests that as an implicit learning mechanism, contextual cueing cannot be effectively used until search begins. Abstract: Visual attention prioritizes information presented at particular spatial locations. These locations can be defined in reference frames centered on the environment or on the viewer. This study investigates whether incidentally learned attention uses a viewer-centered or environment-centered reference frame. Participants conducted visual search on a monitor laid flat on a tabletop. During training, the target was more likely to appear in a “rich” quadrant than in other “sparse” quadrants. Although participants were unaware of this manipulation, they found the target faster in the rich quadrant than in the sparse quadrants, showing probability cuing. In a subsequent testing phase, participants were reseated to change their viewpoint by 90°. In addition, the target became equally likely to appear in any quadrant. Spatial attention continued to be biased for several hundred trials. Critically, the attentional bias moved with the participant, shifting to a previously sparse quadrant on the screen. Our visual system is highly sensitive to regularities in the environment. Locations that were important in one's previous experience are often prioritized during search, even though observers may not be aware of the learning. In this study we characterized the guidance of spatial attention by incidental learning of a target's spatial probability, and examined the interaction between endogenous cuing and probability cuing. Participants searched for a target (T) among distractors (Ls). The target was more often located in one region of the screen than in others. We found that search reaction time (RT) was faster when the target appeared in the high-frequency region rather than the low-frequency regions. This difference increased when there were more items on the display, suggesting that probability cuing guides spatial attention. Additional data indicated that on their own, probability cuing and endogenous cuing (e.g., a central arrow that predicted a target's location) were similarly effective at guiding attention. However, when both cues were presented at once, probability cuing was largely eliminated. Thus, although both incidental learning and endogenous cuing can effectively guide attention, endogenous cuing takes precedence over incidental learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Substantial research has focused on the allocation of spatial attention based on goals or perceptual salience. In everyday life, however, people also direct attention using their previous experience. Here we investigate the pace at which people incidentally learn to prioritize specific locations. Participants searched for a T among Ls in a visual search task. Unbeknownst to them, the target was more often located in one region of the screen than in other regions. An attentional bias toward the rich region developed over dozens of trials. However, the bias did not rapidly readjust to new contexts. It persisted for at least a week and for hundreds of trials after the target's position became evenly distributed. The persistence of the bias did not reflect a long window over which visual statistics were calculated. Abstract: SiO2-coated L10-FePt nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by the sol–gel method, and the effects of SiO2 content on the structure and magnetic properties of the samples were investigated. Thanks to a silica coating, agglomeration is restrained even if the annealing temperature increases up to 700°C, and the silica shells decrease magnetic dipole coupling between FePt nanoparticles. The results of energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis further testify that the L10-FePt NPs are successfully coated with SiO2. The SiO2-coated L10-FePt nanoparticles show a high coercivity of 8096Oe at room temperature in spite of their core size of only 7nm in diameter. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: How does the visual system represent the ensemble statistics of visual objects? This question has received intense interest in vision research, yet most studies have focused on the extraction of mean statistics rather than its dispersion. This study focuses on another aspect of ensemble statistics: the redundancy of the sample. In two experiments, participants were faster judging the facial expression and gender of multiple faces than a single face. The redundancy gain was equivalent for multiple identical faces and for multiple faces of different identities. To test whether the redundancy gain was due to increased strength in perceptual representation, we measured the magnitude of facial expression aftereffects. The aftereffects were equivalent when induced by a single face and by four identical faces, ruling out increased perceptual strength as an explanation for the redundancy gain. We conclude that redundant faces facilitate perception by enhancing the robustness of representation of each face. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
