Superplastic forming is considered a highly efficient technique for shaping intricate components from titanium matrix composites (TMCs). In this work, high-temperature TMCs with 5 vol% (TiBw + TiCp) reinforcements underwent superplastic tensile tests at various temperatures and strain rates. The results demonstrated that at all deformation temperatures (900 °C–1050 °C) and strain rates (5 × 10−3 s−1 to 10−4 s−1), the elongation of composite sheets surpassed 100%. The strain rate of 10−3 s−1 and a temperature of 1000 °C were found to yield the maximum elongation of 328.1%. At 900 °C, the matrix grains maintain a lamellar morphology during the main stage of deformation, and dynamic recovery (DRV) is the primary mechanism of matrix softening. At 1000 °C, wide-range dynamic recrystallization (DRX) takes place, and grain boundary slip coordinated by grain rotation is the main mechanism of deformation. At 1050 °C, the matrix grains undergo DRX and grow rapidly by migration, and the number of grain boundaries decreases dramatically, resulting in poor superplastic qualities. In the early stages of superplastic deformation, micropores sprout at the triple grain boundaries and at the interfaces between the reinforcements and the matrix. As the deformation proceeds, the micropores extend along the tensile direction and connect with each other to form cavity stringers (CS). The distance between the CS rapidly narrows as the stretching process continues, and eventually the CS links horizontally to form cavity coalescence (CC). Micropore dilatation around the reinforcements causes debonding and cavitation, leading to material failure.

Observation of coral spawning times is valuable to detect spawning patterns and identify the potential mechanisms behind coral reproduction. Although large amount of data on global coral spawning records have become available over the past decades, information on coral spawning in the northern South China Sea remains scarce. In this study, we investigated the spawning patterns of scleractinian corals in Luhuitou fringing reef, Hainan Island, China, from 2009 to 2021 in relation to lunar cycles (month and day). The spawning times of 22 coral species from five genera (Acropora, Montipora, Platygyra, Dipsastraea, and Galaxea) within three families (Acroporidae, Merulinidae, and Euphylliidae) were recorded, with spawning occurring from lunar February to May 2009–2021. Recorded spawning events started at a period of increasing seawater temperature. Acropora, the most documented genus, spawned between lunar February and April, but primarily in lunar March. Importantly, the spawning time of Acropora was delayed for one lunar month in 2016 most likely due to a rapid decrease in monthly mean seawater temperature in lunar February. Spawning lunar days before, on or after full moon of corals in the Luhuitou Reef, including those of the Acropora species, were highly variable between years even for the same species. No predictable pattern of spawning times can thus be detected. Nonetheless, our results fill up an information gap on coral spawning patterns in the northern South China Sea that may be useful for further understanding of the reproductive biology of scleractinian corals throughout the Indo–West Pacific.

Abstract As an essential intracellular immune activation pathway, the cGAS‐STING pathway has attracted broad attention in cancer treatment. However, low bioavailability, nonspecificity, and adverse effects of small molecule STING agonists severely limit their therapeutic efficacy and in vivo application. In this study, a peptide‐based STING agonist is first proposed, and KLA is screened out to activate the cGAS‐STING pathway by promoting mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) leakage. To precisely activate the cGAS‐STING pathway and block the PD‐1/PD‐L1 pathway, a multi‐stimuli activatable peptide nanodrug (MAPN) is developed for the effective delivery of KLA and PD‐L1 antagonist peptide (CVR). With rational design, MAPN achieved the site‐specific release of KLA and CVR in response to multiple endogenous stimuli, simultaneously activating the cGAS‐STING pathway and blocking PD‐1/PD‐L1 pathway, ultimately initiating robust and durable T cell anti‐tumor immunity with a tumor growth inhibition rate of 78% and extending the median survival time of B16F10 tumor‐bearing mice to 40 days. Overall, antimicrobial peptides, which can promote mtDNA leakage through damaging mitochondrial membranes, may be potential alternatives for small molecule STING agonists and giving a new insight for the design of novel STING agonists. Furthermore, MAPN presents a universal delivery platform for the effective synergy of multiple peptides.

AbstractMethotrexate (MTX) is a first-line treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its clinical use is greatly limited by the adverse effects and poor patient compliance caused by traditional oral administration or injection. In recent years, some transdermal drug delivery systems have received considerable attention due to overcoming these shortcomings. In this study, we developed dissolving microneedle patch (DMNP) for transdermal delivery of MTX to treat RA safely and effectively. The morphology, mechanical strength, skin insertion, drug content, in vitro transdermal delivery, and other properties of DMNP were characterized. Meanwhile, the adjuvant-induced arthritis model of rats was established to investigate the therapeutic effect of MTX-loaded DMNP in vivo. The results showed that the microneedles had excellent morphology with neat array and complete needles, good puncture performance and mechanical strength, and rapid intradermal dissolution rate. In vitro transdermal delivery results indicated that microneedles could significantly increase drug transdermal permeation compared with the cream group. The pharmacological study showed that MTX-loaded DMNP significantly alleviated paw swelling, inhibit inflammatory response via downregulating the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β, relieved synovium destruction with less cartilage erosion, and slowed the progression of RA in AIA rats. Besides, DMNP presented better therapeutic performance than cream or intragastric administration at the same dosage of MTX. In conclusion, the MTX-loaded dissolving microneedle patch has advantages of safety, convenience, and high efficacy over conventional administrations, laying a foundation for the transdermal drug delivery system treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract Research into the potential benefits of artificial intelligence for comprehending the intricate biology of cancer has grown as a result of the widespread use of deep learning and machine learning in the healthcare sector and the availability of highly specialized cancer datasets. Here, we review new artificial intelligence approaches and how they are being used in oncology. We describe how artificial intelligence might be used in the detection, prognosis, and administration of cancer treatments and introduce the use of the latest large language models such as ChatGPT in oncology clinics. We highlight artificial intelligence applications for omics data types, and we offer perspectives on how the various data types might be combined to create decision-support tools. We also evaluate the present constraints and challenges to applying artificial intelligence in precision oncology. Finally, we discuss how current challenges may be surmounted to make artificial intelligence useful in clinical settings in the future.

Summary: To enhance the use of Cr2TiC2Tx MXene in spin electronics, it is essential to transform its spin-disordered state into a long-range ordered spin state. In this study, first-principles calculations show that Rh layers adhered to the Cr2TiC2Tx surfaces can transform its spin disordered state into a long-range spin order by donating electrons to the O terminations, resulting in Cr2TiC2Tx becoming a single-layer A-type antiferromagnet. As the proportion of F termination increases from 0 to 100%, the exchange coupling constant J1 of the compound escalates from 0.5 to 15.9 meV. Concurrently, the Néel temperature experiences a significant rise from 8 K to 110 K. The analysis of the density of states reveals that the obtained Cr2TiC2Tx exhibits excellent conductivity with O termination and semiconductor characteristics with F termination. These unique features make Cr2TiC2Tx a promising magnetic material for application in spin electronics.

In the context of the vision to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, Mainland China's agricultural development will face strict carbon constraints. This paper analyzes the agricultural land-use efficiency of Mainland China's agriculture under carbon emission constraint from 1996 to 2020, based on the unexpected super SBM (Slack-based measure)-Undesirable DEA, Malmquist index model, and quartile division-GIS method. The results show that: from 1996 to 2020, the agricultural output value per land and grain output per land show an upward trend, and the agricultural carbon emissions per land of most provinces show an increasing trend and larger emissions. The agricultural land-use efficiency in Mainland China rises first and then decreases, and technological progress is the decisive path to improving the agricultural land-use efficiency in Mainland China. The average MI in the prominent grain-selling area during 1996–2020 was as high as 1.071, which was significantly higher than that in the prominent grain-producing area (1.039) and the balance area (1.030). The improvement of agricultural land-use efficiency is mostly due to technological progress, but the instability of technical input and management in land use. To improve agricultural land-use efficiency in Mainland China, we should pay attention to the precise policy formulation of low-carbon and high-quality development and strengthen government investment in the difference between space resource endowment and development status.

As the mechanism of paraquat (PQ) poisoning is still not fully elucidated, and no specific treatment has been developed in medical practice, the management of PQ poisoning continues to present a medical challenge. In this study, the objective was to investigate the early metabolic changes in serum metabolism and identify the key metabolic pathways involved in patients with PQ poisoning. Quantitative analysis was conducted to determine the relevant metabolites. Additionally, experiments were carried out in both plasma and cell to elucidate the mechanisms underlying metabolic disorder and cell death in PQ poisoning. The study found that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their metabolites, such as arachidonic acid (AA) and hydroxy eicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs), were significantly increased by non-enzymatic oxidative reaction. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production increased rapidly at 2 h after PQ poisoning, followed by an increase in PUFAs at 12 h, and intracellular glutathione, cysteine (Cys), and Fe2+ at 24 h. However, at 36 h later, intracellular glutathione and Cys decreased, HETEs increased, and the expression of SLC7A11 and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) decreased. Ultrastructural examination revealed the absence of mitochondrial cristae. Deferoxamine was found to alleviate lipid oxidation, and increase the viability of PQ toxic cells in the low dose. In conclusion, unsaturated fatty acids metabolism was the key metabolic pathways in PQ poisoning. PQ caused cell death through the induction of ferroptosis. Inhibition of ferroptosis could be a novel strategy for the treatment of PQ poisoning.

The structural, electronic, elastic, hardness, fracture toughness, and thermodynamic properties of the newly synthesized MAX phase Sc2PbC were studied for the first time through the first-principles calculations. The optimized lattice parameters are in agreement with the experimental data. The thermodynamic and mechanical stability of Sc2PbC is verified based on the formation enthalpy and single-crystal elastic constants. By analyzing the polycrystalline elastic moduli, it is found that Sc2PbC is brittle, very soft, easily machinable, and exhibits elastic anisotropy. Finally, thermodynamic properties such as Debye temperatures, thermal conductivity, melting temperature, and the temperature dependence of heat capacity are investigated.

Abstract The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR‐related protein 9 (Cas9) genome editing system has attracted much attention due to its powerful genome editing capacity. However, CRISPR‐Cas9 components are easily degraded by acids, enzymes, and other substances in the body fluids after entering the organism, thus efficiently delivering the CRISPR‐Cas9 system into targeted organs or cells has been a central theme for promoting the application of CRISPR‐Cas9 technology. Although several physical methods and viral vectors have been developed for CRISPR‐Cas9 delivery, their clinical application still suffers from disadvantages, such as the risks of mutagenesis, cell damage, and poor specificity. As an alternative, non‐viral nanocarriers hold great promise for circumventing these challenges. Furthermore, with aim to realize more efficient and precise genome editing and reduce the undesirable side effects, stimuli‐responsive nanocarriers are designed for the spatiotemporal CRISPR‐Cas9 delivery in responsive to various stimuli. In this review, we will summarize the recent progress in delivery strategies for CRISPR‐Cas9 genome editing. The mechanisms and advantages of these strategies were reviewed, providing a comprehensive review of the rational design of materials and techniques for efficient and precise genome editing. At last, the potential challenges of current CRISPR‐Cas9 delivery are discussed.

Abstract Background Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) is a potential threat to polio eradication because they can reintroduce into the general population and cause paralytic polio outbreaks, a phenomenon that has recently emerged as a prominent public health concern at the end of global polio eradication. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of the first VDPV identified from a patient with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), with four doses of inactivated polio vaccine immunization in Henan Province, China in 2017. Methods The patient was diagnosed with type 3 VDPV. Subsequently, a series of epidemiological approaches was implemented, including a retrospective search of AFP cases, rate of vaccination assessment, study of contacts, and supplementary immunization activities. Fecal samples were collected, viral isolation was performed, and the viral isolates were characterized using full-length genomic sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Results Phylogenetic analysis showed that the viral isolates from the patient were different from other reported genetic clusters of type 3 VDPV worldwide. They were identified as a Sabin 3/Sabin 1 recombinant VDPV with a crossover site in the P2 region. Nucleotide substitutions, including U → C (472) and C → U (2493), have been identified, both of which are frequently observed as reversion mutations in neurovirulent type 3 poliovirus. A unique aspect of this case is that the patient had been vaccinated with four doses of inactive polio vaccine, and the serum neutralizing antibody for Sabin types 1 and 3 were 1∶16 and 1∶512, respectively. Thus, the patient was speculated to have been infected with type 3 VDPV, and the virus continued to replicate and be excreted for at least 41 d. Conclusions The existence of this kind of virus in human population is a serious risk and poses a severe challenge in maintaining a polio-free status in China. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of VDPV identified in the Henan province of China. Our results highlight the importance of maintaining a high-level vaccination rate and highly sensitive AFP case surveillance system in intercepting VDPV transmission.

Abstract Background Recent studies suggest that the incidence of small for gestational age (SGA) birth related to maternal depression, but the mechanism is unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the changes of promoter methylation in the placenta which may be involved in the relationship between prenatal depression and SGA. Methods Three hundred forty-five pregnant women were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Perinatal emotion and sleep quality in the second and third trimesters were assessed using self-rating depression scale, self-rating anxiety scale, and Pittsburgh sleep quality index. According to the exposure (depressed emotion of mother) and outcome (SGA), the placentas were divided into four groups. Methylation of the promoter regions of the placental CRH, HSD11β2, SLA16A10, DIO3, and MTNR1B genes was determined using next generation sequencing based on bisulfite sequencing PCR. Results There were 97 (28.1%) and 95 (27.5%) pregnant women who had depression in the second trimester and third trimester, respectively. Thirty-five pregnant women had an SGA birth. The incidence of SGA births in this prospective cohort was 10.1%. The risk factors of SGA birth were low BMI of pregnancy women (RR = 0.71, 95%CI = 0.54 ~ 0.92), hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (HDCP, RR = 4.7, 95%CI = 1.18 ~ 18.72), and maternal depression in the second trimester (RR = 3.71, 95%CI = 1.31 ~ 12.16). We found that the CRH and HSD11β2 methylation levels were higher in the depression group than those in the non-depression group. Methylation levels of DIO3 were higher in SGA group than that in the non-SGA group. Higher methylation levels of CRH correlated with higher methylation levels of DIO3 in the placenta. Conclusions Maternal depression in the second trimester may lead to the changes of methylation levels in the promoter region of CRH and HSD11β2 gene, while the changes of methylation of DIO3 in subsequent could related to SGA. This study suggests that maternal depressed emotion during pregnancy may result in SGA due to the epigenetic changes of placenta.

Motivated by the recent experimental synthesis of a new hexagonal two-dimensional GeSe material, γ-GeSe, we systematically investigated the phonon transport properties of two-dimensional IV-VI compounds γ-GeS, γ-GeSe and γ-GeTe using first principles calculation and phonon Boltzmann transport equation. We discussed the basic phonon transport properties, including phonon spectra, group velocity, relaxation time, Grüneisen parameter, scattering phase space, phonon mean free path, potential energy change with respect to atomic displacement, and electron localization function of the three compounds. The intrinsic phonon thermal conductivities of γ-GeX (X = S, Se, Te) are quite low due to the low phonon velocity and large phonon scattering rates. Among the three compounds, γ-GeSe gives the lowest thermal conductivity (4.73 W/mK, at room temperature). The relative atomic mass difference between Ge atom and Se atom for γ-GeSe is the smallest which gives decreasing both the phonon relaxation time and phonon mean free path. This behavior is demonstrated by correlating the phonon dispersion and scattering mechanism of each compound. Besides, the potential energy change with respect to atomic displacement and the distribution of electron localization indicating the anharmonicity of γ-GeSe. This work reveals the low thermal conductivity of the two-dimensional γ-GeX (X = S, Se, Te), shedding light on future study and adding additional feature for thermal applications of two-dimensional IV-VI material.

In recent years, most rural areas in China have faced the prominent livelihood transformation of smallholder farmers. It may directly or indirectly affect the regional environment. Thus, this paper constructed a conceptual framework and chose the first Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) site in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as the case for evaluating the impact of smallholder farmers’ livelihood transformation on the agricultural system. From 2016 to 2019, the main direction of livelihood transformation of smallholder farmers in the case area is the non-agricultural livelihood transformation. And the average proportion of agricultural income in households has continued to decline. With the non-agricultural livelihood transformation, smallholder farmers’ land use and energy use behaviour has changed. As a result, the elements in farmland and the relationship between farmland, woodland, and grassland have shown weakening trends in the structure of the case agricultural system. In addition, the ecological and sociocultural functions of the case agricultural system have declined. Still, the productive function has remained almost at a stable level and has even increased slightly.

Abstract The conversion of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) to p-aminophenol (4-AP) is of great significance for pharmaceutical and material manufacturing. In this work, Au-M@SiO2 (M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) with core–shell structures, which are expected to be excellent catalysts for the transformation of 4-NP to 4-AP, were synthesized by a facile one-pot one-step method. The structure and composition of the NPs were characterized through transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Au-M@SiO2 (M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt) core–shell NPs showed excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-NP, which is superior to most catalysts reported in the previous literature. The enhanced catalytic activity of Au-M@SiO2 core–shell NPs is presumably related to the bimetallic synergistic effect. This study provides a simple strategy to synthesize core–shell bimetallic NPs for catalytic applications.

Traditional tower cranes cannot meet the sustainable development goals as they use the cast-in-place concrete foundation, with large size, long construction period, and demolition after construction, resulting in waste of resources and high costs. This paper proposes a bolt-connected prefabricated cross-shaped I-steel tower crane foundation. It offers significant advantages in terms of convenient connection, low amortization cost and recyclability. The split connection point of the foundation is determined through the force analysis of the I-steel. With the ratio of the fixed cross-sectional area to the web height-to-thickness ratio (i.e. total cost) being constant, the inertia moment and bending stiffness of the I-steel are optimized using modern optimization design methods with the ratio of the web plate area to the total section area of the I-steel as the design variable, yielding the ideal strength and stiffness of the I-steel section.

Abstract Objective Postoperative bowel obstruction was one of the most severe complications in patients who received colorectal surgeries. This study aimed to explore risk factors of early postoperative obstruction and to construct a nomogram to predict the possibility of occurrence. Methods The records of 1437 patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery in Peking University People’s Hospital from 2015 to 2020 were retrospectively collected. Risk factors of early postoperative bowel obstruction were identified by logistic regression analysis and a nomogram was then constructed. Bootstrap was applied to verify the stability of the model. Results COPD, hypothyroidism, probiotic indications, duration of antibiotics, and time to postoperative feeding were identified as independent risk factors and were put into a nomogram for predicting early postoperative bowel obstruction. The nomogram showed robust discrimination, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.894 and was well-calibrated. Conclusion A nomogram including independent risk factors of COPD, hypothyroidism, probiotic indications, duration of antibiotics, and time to postoperative feeding were established to predict the risk of early postoperative bowel obstruction.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence probes are indispensable for biomedical imaging, however, interference with tissue autofluorescence results in low signal-to-noise ratio limiting the development of bioimaging with AIE materials. Here the authors develop AIEgen room-temperature phosphors with long emission lifetimes efficiently eliminating intereference with the background signal in imaging.

Global climate change has caused extensive loss of biodiversity and ecosystem function globally, particularly in coral reefs in shallow tropical waters. As the corallivorous snails represent considerable disturbances to coral reefs across Indo-Pacific region, it is becoming a threat to coral health and recovery in the Hainan Island, South China Sea, but current-knowledge gap remains on the spatial distribution, prey preferences, and the influence factors related. Thus, we investigated the abundance distribution of Drupella spp. in relation to coral-prey selectivity, availability, and nutritional value. The snail density was heterogeneously distributed in the study area with an average of 0.72 ± 0.32 ind m−2 (varying from 0.09 ± 0.03 to 1.78 ± 0.39 ind m−2), and the snail density was found generally higher in locations with higher coral cover, which resulted in much lower density where their preferred corals became scarce. Despite the snails showing a positive preference for Acroporidae corals, they displayed dietary plasticity by changing with prey abundance and availability. Further, we found the electivity index of the coral prey related to the substrate types, and the nutritional value of prey was an additional important determinant in the prey preference, suggesting that the specific reef habitat and environmental context may alter the prey preference of Drupella spp. Combined, these results provide preliminary evidence that Drupella spp. is among the common corallivories in the reef regions of Hainan Island, and we recommend that large-scale monitoring programs assess the spatial-temporal trends to better understand the dynamics of predation linked to both anthropogenic and natural impacts.

For the first time, the crystal structure, elastic properties, anisotropy, Vickers hardness and Debye temperature of four different phases (cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal and orthorhombic) of Fe2MnGa are investigated by the first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that those types of Fe2MnGa are thermodynamic and mechanical stability and behave in a ductile manner. The Vickers hardness show that the P4/mmm symmetry is significantly higher than that of the others. Furthermore, the anisotropic properties of Fe2MnGa shows that the I4¯m2 symmetry has the highest anisotropy, while the P4/mmm symmetry has the lowest anisotropy. Finally, the Debye temperatures of four different phases have been obtained.

Electrospun nanofiber constructs represent a promising alternative for mimicking the natural extracellular matrix in vitro and have significant potential for cardiac patch applications. While the effect of fiber orientation on the morphological structure of cardiomyocytes has been investigated, fibers only provide contact guidance without accounting for substrate stiffness due to their deposition on rigid substrates (e.g., glass or polystyrene). This paper introduces an in situ fabrication method for suspended and well aligned nanofibrous scaffolds via roller electrospinning, providing an anisotropic microenvironment with reduced stiffness for cardiac tissue engineering. A fiber surface modification strategy, utilizing oxygen plasma treatment combined with sodium dodecyl sulfate solution, was proposed to maintain the hydrophilicity of polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers, promoting cellular adhesion. Human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs), cultured on aligned fibers, exhibited an elongated morphology with extension along the fiber axis. In comparison to Petri dishes and suspended random fiber scaffolds, hiPSC-CMs on suspended aligned fiber scaffolds demonstrated enhanced sarcomere organization, spontaneous synchronous contraction, and gene expression indicative of maturation. This work demonstrates the suspended and aligned nano-fibrous scaffold provides a more realistic biomimetic environment for hiPSC-CMs, which promoted further research on the inducing effect of fiber scaffolds on hiPSC-CMs microstructure and gene-level expression.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is one of the most complex surgeries and is associated with a high rate of complications, including bleeding, delayed gastric emptying (DGE), and pancreatic fistula. Although the frequency of postoperative hemorrhage is not high, this complication results in severe adverse outcomes. A 67-year-old man was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent PD. On the tenth day after surgery, he developed hypovolemic shock with hematemesis. Urgent digital subtraction angiography identified the bleeding artery as the jejunal mesenteric artery at the afferent loop, and the bleeding artery was embolized with two coils. After digital subtraction angiography, the patient had an uneventful recovery with no further complications. Therefore, we concluded that it is possible that bleeding may occur in the afferent loop when hemorrhage occurs after PD.

Abstract Background Average daily gain (ADG) and lean meat percentage (LMP) are the main production performance indicators of pigs. Nevertheless, the genetic architecture of ADG and LMP is still elusive. Here, we conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analysis for ADG and LMP in 3770 American and 2090 Canadian Duroc pigs. Results In the American Duroc pigs, one novel pleiotropic quantitative trait locus (QTL) on Sus scrofa chromosome 1 (SSC1) was identified to be associated with ADG and LMP, which spans 2.53 Mb (from 159.66 to 162.19 Mb). In the Canadian Duroc pigs, two novel QTLs on SSC1 were detected for LMP, which were situated in 3.86 Mb (from 157.99 to 161.85 Mb) and 555 kb (from 37.63 to 38.19 Mb) regions. The meta-analysis identified ten and 20 additional SNPs for ADG and LMP, respectively. Finally, four genes (PHLPP1, STC1, DYRK1B, and PIK3C2A) were detected to be associated with ADG and/or LMP. Further bioinformatics analysis showed that the candidate genes for ADG are mainly involved in bone growth and development, whereas the candidate genes for LMP mainly participated in adipose tissue and muscle tissue growth and development. Conclusions We performed GWAS and meta-analysis for ADG and LMP based on a large sample size consisting of two Duroc pig populations. One pleiotropic QTL that shared a 2.19 Mb haplotype block from 159.66 to 161.85 Mb on SSC1 was found to affect ADG and LMP in the two Duroc pig populations. Furthermore, the combination of single-population and meta-analysis of GWAS improved the efficiency of detecting additional SNPs for the analyzed traits. Our results provide new insights into the genetic architecture of ADG and LMP traits in pigs. Moreover, some significant SNPs associated with ADG and/or LMP in this study may be useful for marker-assisted selection in pig breeding.

Preterm birth and infection are common causes of neonatal death. In this study, we aimed to develop a nomogram for assessing the individual prior probability of late-onset sepsis on the basis of risk factors in preterm infants. This study is a mixed retrospective and prospective cohort study conducted in three centers. Data from January 2014 to December 2017 was used for the development cohort, and data from January 2018 to December 2018 was used for the validation cohort. In the development cohort, we identified the predicting variables of late-onset sepsis in preterm infants, from which a nomogram was obtained. Then we built nomograms, for with and without thyroid function, to predict late-onset sepsis. The nomogram was validated in the validation cohort concerning discrimination and calibration. A total of 1256 and 452 preterm infants were included in the development and validation cohort, respectively. We found thyroid hypofunction in preterm infants could increase the incidence of late-onset infection. The prediction model incorporated thyroid function, birth weight, use of endotracheal intubation, and duration of umbilical venous catheters was validated and developed as a nomogram for predicting late-onset sepsis in preterm infants. Nomogram in this study may contribute to clinical assessment and treatment decisions.

Recently, magnetic two-dimensional Cr2TiC2Tx MXenes with promising applications in spin electronics have been experimentally confirmed. However, the underlying magnetic mechanism needs to be further investigated. Along these lines, in this work, the magnetic properties of Cr2TiC2On/4F2−n/4 and Cr2TiC2On/4 structures were simulated through first-principle calculations using the GGA+U approach. The values of 4.1 and 3.1 eV were calculated for the Hubbard U of Cr and Ti, respectively, by applying the linear response method. Interestingly, the Cr2TiC2On/4F2−n/4-based configurations with low O content (n ≤ 4) exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior, while the majority of the respective configurations with high O content (n ≥ 5) are ferromagnetic. As far as the Cr2TiC2O5/4F3/4 structure (n = 5) is concerned, the value of about 2.64 μB was estimated for the magnetic moment of the Cr atom. On top of that, the Curie temperature lies within the range of 10~47 K. The extracted theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental outcomes of the Cr2TiC2O1.3F0.8-based structure. From the simulated results, it can be also argued that the magnetic moment of Cr atoms and the Neel temperature can be directly tuned by the active content of O atoms. The conductivity of both Cr2TiC2On/4F2−n/4 and Cr2TiC2On/4 configurations can be regulated by the externally applied magnetic field, while the density of states around the Fermi level shifted significantly between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic arrangements. The acquired results provide important theoretical insights to tuning the magnetic properties of Cr2TiC2Tx-based structures through surface termination mechanisms, which are quite significant for their potential applications in spin electronics.

To reveal the energy consumption characteristics of a steel bar and all-lightweight shale ceramsite concrete (ALWSCC), focusing on hot rolled crescent ribbed bars (CRB) and hot rolled plain steel bars (PSB), a series of pull-out tests were carried out. The bonding failure modes, the contribution of the ribs to bond-slip failure and the energy consumption characteristics were analyzed based on the curves of pull-out load F-slip displacement S and energy consumption W–slip displacement S. Results show that the splitting failure is the main failure of the CRB specimen, and the pulling out failure is the main failure of the PSB one. The ratio of the total energy dissipation of splitting failure to that of the pulling out failure is less than 30%. The mechanical bite force between CRB and concrete contributes more than 95% to the bond strength. The pull-out force is divided into four stages, such as the chemical adhesive force stage (elastic and micro-elastic strain stage), the common-effect stage of mechanical bearing force and static frictional force (plastic development stage), and the frictional force stage (crushed stage). The new design is proposed to guarantee the ductility of the reinforced concrete structure, which is based on the bond-slip energy consumption rather than the traditional strength design. The conclusions provide a reference to the reinforced concrete practice.

Prostate cancer stem cells (PCSCs), possessing self-renewal properties and resistance to anticancer treatment, are possibly the leading cause of distant metastasis and treatment failure in prostate cancer (PC). CD133 is one of the most well-known and valuable cell surface markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in many cancers, including PC. In this article, we focus on reviewing the role of CD133 in PCSC. Any other main stem cell biomarkers in PCSC reported from key publications, as well as about vital research progress of CD133 in CSCs of different cancers, will be selectively reviewed to help us inform the main topic.

The preparation and self-assembling of monodisperse gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is of great significance for its SERS application. According to the oleylamine-reduced method, oleylamine (OAm) serves as the reducing agent and stabilizing agent, and the effects of different reaction parameters such as solvent and temperature on the size and dispersity of Au NPs have been evaluated. The Au NPs synthesized with toluene as the solvent have the best dispersity and narrowest particle size distribution with adjustable sizes. The particle size gradually increases with the increase in reaction temperature. The highly ordered self-assembly film of Au NPs was employed as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for the probing molecule of rhodamine 6G. The Au substrate exhibits excellent spatial uniformity and SERS reproducibility, which indicates its practicability as a substrate. This study provides a simple synthesis strategy of highly ordered monodispersed Au NPs, which can serve as a SERS substrate with excellent spatial uniformity and SERS re-producibility.

The success of the lattice Boltzmann method requires efficient parallel programming and computing power. Here, we present a new lattice Boltzmann solver implemented in Taichi programming language, named Taichi-LBM3D. It can be employed on cross-platform shared-memory many-core CPUs or massively parallel GPUs (OpenGL and CUDA). Taichi-LBM3D includes the single- and two-phase porous medium flow simulation with a D3Q19 lattice model, Multi-Relaxation-Time (MRT) collision scheme and sparse data storage. It is open source, intuitive to understand, and easily extensible for scientists and researchers.

In this paper, the Legendre wavelet neural network with extreme learning machine is proposed for the numerical solution of the time fractional Black–Scholes model. In this way, the operational matrix of the fractional derivative based on the two-dimensional Legendre wavelet is derived and employed to solve the European options pricing problem. This scheme converts this problem into the calculation of a set of algebraic equations. The Legendre wavelet neural network is constructed; meanwhile, the extreme learning machine algorithm is adopted to speed up the learning rate and avoid the over-fitting problem. In order to evaluate the performance of this scheme, a comparative study with the implicit differential method is constructed to validate its feasibility and effectiveness. Experimental results illustrate that this scheme offers a satisfactory numerical solution compared to the benchmark method.

In this paper, the thermoelectric properties of p-type and n-type GeSe are studied systematically by using first principles and Boltzmann transport theory. The calculation includes electronic structure, electron relaxation time, lattice thermal conductivity and thermoelectric transport properties. The results show that GeSe is an indirect band gap semiconductor with band gap 1.34 eV. Though p-type GeSe has a high density of states near Fermi level, the electronic conductivity is relative low because there is no carrier transport pathway along the a-axis direction. For n-type GeSe, a charge density channel is formed near conduction band minimum, which improves the electrical conductivity of n-type GeSe along the a-axis direction. At 700 K, the optimal ZT value reaches 2.5 at 4 × 1019 cm−3 for n-type GeSe, while that is 0.6 at 1 × 1020 cm−3 for p-type GeSe. The results show n-type GeSe has better thermoelectric properties than p-type GeSe, indicating that n-type GeSe is a promising thermoelectric material in middle temperature.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) belong to a class of non-coding RNAs that suppress gene expression by complementary oligonucleotide binding to the sites in target messenger RNAs. Numerous studies have demonstrated that miRNAs play crucial role in virtually all cellular processes of both plants and animals, such as cell growth, cell division, differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. The study of rice MIR168a has demonstrated for the first time that exogenous plant MIR168a influences cholesterol transport in mice by inhibiting low-density lipoprotein receptor adapter protein 1 expression. Inspired by this finding, the cross-kingdom regulation of plant-derived miRNAs has drawn a lot of attention because of its capability to provide novel therapeutic agents in the treatment of miRNA deregulation-related diseases. Notably, unlike mRNA, some plant miRNAs are robust because of their 3′ end modification, high G, C content, and the protection by microvesicles, miRNAs protein cofactors or plant ingredients. The stability of these small molecules guarantees the reliability of plant miRNAs in clinical application. Although the function of endogenous miRNAs has been widely investigated, the cross-kingdom regulation of plant-derived miRNAs is still in its infancy. Herein, this review summarizes the current knowledge regarding the anti-virus, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, immune modulation, and intestinal function regulation effects of plant-derived miRNAs in mammals. It is expected that exploring the versatile role of plant-derived miRNAs may lay the foundation for further study and application of these newly recognized, non-toxic, and inexpensive plant active ingredients.

The stability, electronic structure, electric transport, thermal transport and thermoelectric properties of the monolayer Hf2Br4 are predicted by using first principle calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory. The dynamic stability of the monolayer Hf2Br4 is verified by phonon band dispersion, and the thermal stability is revealed by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The electronic structure calculation indicates that the monolayer Hf2Br4 is an indirect band gap semiconductor with a band gap of 1.31 eV. The lattice thermal conductivity of the monolayer Hf2Br4 is investigated and analyzed on phonon mode level. The calculation results of the electric transport explore the excellent electric transport properties of the monolayer Hf2Br4. The thermoelectric transport properties as a function of carrier concentration at three different temperatures are calculated. The study indicates that the monolayer Hf2Br4 can be an alternative, stable two-dimensional material with potential application in the thermoelectric field.

The purpose of our study was to evaluate Magmas as a potential target in prostate cancer. In addition, we evaluated our synthetic Magmas inhibitor (BT#9) effects on prostate cancer and examined the molecular mechanism of BT#9. A cell viability assay showed that treatment with BT#9 caused a significant decrease in the viability of DU145 and PC3 prostate cancer cells with little effect on the viability of WPMY-1 normal prostate cells. Western blot proved that BT#9 downregulated the Magmas protein and caspase-3 activation. Flow cytometry studies demonstrated increased apoptosis and disturbed mitochondrial membrane potential. However, the main mode of cell death was caspase-independent necrosis, which was correlated with the accumulation of mitochondrial and intra-cellular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Taken together, our data suggest Magmas is a potential molecular target for the treatment of prostate cancer and that Magmas inhibition results in ROS-dependent and caspase-independent necrotic cell death.

The geometry structures, vibrational, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of bilayer GeSe, bilayer SnSe, and van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure GeSe/SnSe are investigated by combining the first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The dynamical stability of the considered structures are discussed with phonon dispersion. The phonon spectra indicate that the bilayer SnSe is a dynamically unstable structure, while the bilayer GeSe and vdW heterostructure GeSe/SnSe are stable. Then, the electronic structures for the bilayer GeSe and vdW heterostructure GeSe/SnSe are calculated with HSE06 functional. The results of electronic structures show that the bilayer GeSe and vdW heterostructure GeSe/SnSe are indirect band gap semiconductors with band gaps of 1.23 eV and 1.07 eV, respectively. The thermoelectric properties, including electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, power factor, and figure of merit (ZT) are calculated with semiclassical Boltzmann transport equations (BTE). The results show that the n-type bilayer GeSe is a promising thermoelectric material.

The overall five-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer has hardly changed in the past few decades (less than 10%) because of resistance to all known therapies, including chemotherapeutic drugs. In the past few decades, gemcitabine has been at the forefront of treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, but more strategies to combat drug resistance need to be explored. One promising possibility is ferroptosis, a form of a nonapoptotic cell death that depends on intracellular iron and occurs through the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species, which are significant in drug resistance. In this article, we reviewed gemcitabine-resistance mechanisms; assessed the relationship among ferroptosis, tumorigenesis and gemcitabine resistance, and explored a new treatment method for pancreatic cancer.

Soil quality assessment is an important means to demonstrate how effective land consolidation is. However, the existing assessment system is not sufficient to reflect actual soil quality. So, the purpose of this study is to integrate abiological and biological indicators into a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the paddy soil quality under different land consolidation practices. Soil samples were collected from 35 paddy sites under different land consolidation practices including land merging, land leveling (LL), ditch construction (DC) and application of organic fertilizer (AO). A total of 10 paddy sites were selected under conventional tillage (CT) from non-land consolidation area as a control group in Y county, China. The results indicated that soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus, bacterial functional diversity (BFD), bacterial and fungal abundances were significantly improved. Fields under LL, among all the land consolidation practices, might still face the risk of land degradation caused by low TN, OM and microbial diversity. High microbial biomass, BFD and OM were significantly higher in fields under AO in nutrient cycle. According to the results of comprehensive assessment, the samples with severe heavy metal contamination and low microbial diversity were generally concentrated in CT. These results indicated that land consolidation was an efficient technique to improve soil quality and could achieve higher quality of agricultural products.

To study the seismic strength and stiffness for recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (RACFST) frame, two-frame specimens made up of RACFST column and reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) beam were used for a seismic test under reversed low-cycle loading. The failure mechanism, hysteresis curve, strength attenuation, and stiffness degradation were determined for the specimens. The design methods for the story shear bearing capacity and stiffness for the single-layer single-span RACFST frame were discussed. It is shown that the seismic design requirements including “strong column weak beam” and “strong shear weak bending” can be met. The hysteresis curves are symmetric and the strength attenuation and rigidity degeneration change significantly, then change a little, and then significantly again under the same displacement. It is possible that the methods including elastic bending moment at the column end, plastic hinge at the column end, and plastic hinge at the column bottom can all be applied to the design calculation of the story shear bearing capacity for the single-layer single-span RACFST frame. The method adopted in this paper can be used to estimate the original elastic layer stiffness of the RACFST frame.

Objective(s):This study aimed to establish a novel non-binding, reversible rat model of acute cholangitis of the severe type (ACST). Materials and Methods:Twenty-six rats were randomly divided into the sham-operated group (n=13) and the ACST group (n=13). All rats were intubated with a modified catheter through the external jugular vein. The ACST model was established by ligation of the distal bile duct, placing one end of a modified catheter in the common bile duct, and then injecting lipopolysaccharides from the other end of the catheter and sealing it. The common bile duct pressure was measured before and at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hr after the model was established; similarly, the levels of serum total bilirubin (TBIL), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were measured at 0, 12, 24, and 48 hr after the model was established. Results: Pathological examination of liver tissues was carried out at 24 and 72 hr. The common bile duct pressure increased gradually after the operation. Serum levels of TBIL, ALT, and TNF-α in the ACST group progressively increased and were significantly higher than those in the sham-operated group, at each time point (P

In order to achieve a multi-path routing algorithm with time delay and energy consumption balance to alleviate the energy holes around a sink, a multimedia independent multipath routing algorithm for internet of things (IoT) based on node hidden communication model is proposed in this paper. On the premise of satisfying the application delay, a multi-source multi-path routing algorithm is proposed by using the idea of software definition and fitting multiple curves to form independent multi-path routing. Through a sink node centralized programming control source node routing, according to the priority of the source node, the dynamic angle of the source node can be allocated, which effectively reduces the energy consumption of the network. In addition, considering that the Internet of Things has more perceptive nodes, limited computing and storage capacity, frequent joining and exiting operations and other factors, a hidden communication model of nodes is designed for the IoT. It is helpful to improve the level of privacy protection in the IoT, and to effectively improve the ability of nodes to resist attacks in the IoT. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm avoids the interference between paths and various network attacks to the greatest extent, and the energy consumption is relatively low under the requirement of quality of service (QoS) delay.

A pressure-induced structural transition from the layered-like phase (Pnma) to another bilayer structure (Cmcm) in GeSe was investigated with first principle calculations. The variations of the structural, electronic, elastic, and vibrational properties of GeSe with the application of pressure were obtained. The transformation from the Pnma to Cmcm phase occurred at 34 GPa. The Cmcm phase structure showed dynamical stability above 37 GPa. The lattice parameters and the equation of state varied continuously at the transition pressure. Obvious stiffening in the C33 and C23 elastic constants associated with the compressive and shear components was observed to occur within the phase transition process. Two characteristic Raman modes (Ag and B3g) of the Pnma phase showed significant softening by increasing the pressure.

Inspired by the GARCH-MIDAS model, we revisit the relationship between Chinese futures and macroeconomic factors. We introduce the level of the macroeconomic variables into the GARCH-MIDAS model in order to test the impact of the macroeconomic level on the variance of futures’ return volatility. Based on the empirical results, we find the level of macroeconomic variables has a significant impact on the volatility of Chinese futures’ return. The influence of the macroeconomic level factor on the futures’ return volatility is statistically significant.

This is a study of the basic mechanical properties of specified density shale aggregate concrete, which is based on different replacement rates in stone-lightweight aggregate concrete (stone-LAC) and sand-lightweight aggregate concrete (sand-LAC). They were prepared by replacing the ceramsite and pottery sand with stone and river sand, respectively. Many tests were performed regarding the basic mechanical property indexes, including tests of cube compressive strength, axial compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The failure modes of specified density shale aggregate concrete were obtained. The effects of replacement rates on the mechanical property indexes of specified density shale aggregate concrete were analyzed. Calculation models were implemented for elastic modulus, for the conversion relations between the axial compressive strength and the cube compressive strength, and for the relations between the tension-compression ratio and Poisson’s ratio. It was shown that when the replacement rate of stone or river sand increased from 0% to 100%, the cube compressive strength of stone-LAC and sand-LAC increased, respectively, by 55% and 25%, the axial compressive strength increased, respectively, by 91% and 72%, splitting tensile strength increased, respectively, by 99% and 44%, and the flexural strength increased, respectively, by 46% and 26%. Similarly, the elastic modulus of stone-LAC and sand-LAC increased, respectively, by 16% and 30%. However, Poisson’s ratio for stone-LAC decreased first and then increased, eventually increased by 11%; Poisson’s ratio for sand-LAC only reduced gradually, eventually reduced by 67%. After introducing the influence parameter for the replacement rate, the established calculation models become simple and practical, and the calculation accuracies are favorable.

The electronic, vibrational and thermoelectric transport characteristics of AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2 with chalcopyrite structure have been investigated. The electronic structures are calculated using the density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functional considering the Hubbard-U exchange correlation. The band-gaps of AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2 are much larger than previous standard GGA functional results and agree well with the existing experimental data. The effective mass of the hole and the shape of density of states near the edge of the valence band indicate AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2 are considerable p-type thermoelectric materials. An analysis of lattice dynamics shows the low thermal conductivities of AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2. The thermoelectric transport properties' dependence on carrier concentration for p-type AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2 in a wide range of temperatures has been studied in detail. The results show that p-type AgInTe2 and AgGaTe2 at 800 K can achieve the merit values of 0.91 and 1.38 at about 2.12 × 1020 cm−3 and 1.97 × 1020 cm−3 carrier concentrations, respectively. This indicates p-type AgGaTe2 is a potential thermoelectric material at high temperature.

Fatigue tests were performed on plain concrete under triaxial tension-compression-compression (T-C-C) cyclic loading with constant and variable amplitude using a large multiaxial machine. Experimental results show that, under constant amplitude fatigue loads, the development of residual strain in the fatigue loading direction depends mostly on the lateral compressive stress ratio and is nearly independent of stress level. Under variable amplitude fatigue loads, the fatigue residual strain is related to the relative fatigue cycle and lateral compressive stress ratio but has little relationship with the loading process. To model this system, the relative residual strain was defined as the damage variant. Damage evolutions for plain concrete were established. In addition, fatigue damage analysis and predictions of fatigue remaining life were conducted. This work provides a reference for multistage fatigue testing and fatigue damage evaluation of plain concrete under multiaxial loads.

This paper studies collar options in a stochastic volatility economy. The underlying asset price is assumed to follow a continuous geometric Brownian motion with stochastic volatility driven by a mean-reverting process. The method of asymptotic analysis is employed to solve the PDE in the stochastic volatility model. An analytical approximation formula for the price of the collar option is derived. A numerical experiment is presented to demonstrate the results.

To explore the structural, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of the chalcopyrite-type compound AgGaS2 under pressure, we applied hydrostatic pressure to the relaxed compound based on the first principles calculation and quasi-harmonic approximation. The structural parameters, including lattice constants and bond lengths decrease monotonically with the increasing pressure. The phonon dispersion curves under various pressures reveal the structural phase transition of chalcopyrite-type compound AgGaS2 at about 4 GPa. The intrinsic mechanism of thermal conductivity for the chalcopyrite-type compound AgGaS2 has been shown with phonon anharmonicity. The frequencies of the optical phonons at the center point Γ of the first Brillouin zone were calculated with the longitudinal optical⁻transverse optical (LO⁻TO) splitting mode. The dependence of the frequencies of the optical phonons on the pressure provides the information for the Raman spectroscopic study under high pressure. The pressure dependence of the Grüneisen parameters indicates that the instability of chalcopyrite-type compound AgGaS2 is associated with the softening of the acoustic phonon modes at around the center point Γ. The thermal conductivity for chalcopyrite-type compound AgGaS2 could be reduced by applying external pressure. The various thermodynamic properties, such as the Helmholtz free energy, entropy, and heat capacity, at different temperatures and pressures were discussed and analyzed based on the phonon properties.
