Quantum sensing uses quantum systems as sensors to capture weak signals and is providing opportunities in science and technology. The biggest challenge in quantum sensing is decoherence due to the coupling between the sensor and the environment. The dissipation will destroy the quantum coherence and reduce the performance of the sensor. Here we show that quantum sensing can be realized under dissipation by engineering the steady state of the sensor. We demonstrate this protocol with a magnetometer based on ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, while neither high-quality initialization or readout of the sensor nor sophisticated dynamical decoupling sequences are required. Thus our method provides a concise and decoherence-resistant means of quantum sensing. The frequency resolution and precision of our magnetometer are far beyond the coherence time of the sensor. Furthermore, we show that the dissipation can be engineered to improve the performance of our sensor. By increasing the laser pumping, magnetic signals in a broad audio-frequency band from dc up to 140 kHz can be tackled by our method. Besides the potential applications in magnetic sensing and imaging on the microscopic scale, our results may provide opportunities for improvement of a variety of high-precision spectroscopies based on other quantum sensors.

Nuclear spins nearby nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are excellent quantum memory for quantum computing and quantum sensing, but are difficult to be initialized due to their weak interactions with the environment. Here we propose and demonstrate a magnetic-field-independent, deterministic and highly efficient polarization scheme by introducing chopped laser pulses into the double-resonance initialization method. With this method, we demonstrate initialization of single-nuclear-spin approaching $98.1\%$ and a $^{14}N$-$^{13}C$ double-nuclear-spin system approaching $96.8\%$ at room temperature. The initialization is limited by a nuclear-spin depolarization effect due to chopped laser excitation. Our approach could be extended to NV systems with more nuclear spins and would be a useful tool in future applications such as nano-MRI and single-cell NMR., 5 pages, 4 figures, comments are welcome

Quantum computation provides great speedup over its classical counterpart for certain tasks. Spin system is one of the most important candidates to realize quantum computations. The initialization, readout and quantum gate operations of spin-qubits can be accomplished by advanced spin resonance techniques, which include nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance and optically detected magnetic resonance. This review aims to summarize recent experimental progresses in spin-based quantum computing. Preserving quantum states, precise quantum operations, quantum algorithms and quantum simulations on spin systems are reviewed. The fast improvement of quantum technology motivated by quantum computations results in recent progress in spin magnetic resonance in nanoscale. This review also introduces the achievements in nanoscale magnetic resonance with Nitrogen vacancy centers in diamonds.

We present the experimental reconstruction of the Wigner function of an individual electronic spin qubit associated with a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond at room temperature. This spherical Wigner function contains the same information as the density matrix for arbitrary spin systems. As an example, we exactly characterize the quantum state of a single qubit undergoing a nearly pure dephasing process by Wigner function. The fidelities and purities during this process are extracted from the experimental reconstructed Wigner functions, whose dynamics agree with the theoretical prediction. Adiabatic cyclic modulation of a one-dimensional periodic potential will result in quantized charge transport, which is termed the Thouless pump. In contrast to the original Thouless pump restricted by the topology of the energy band, here we experimentally observe a generalized Thouless pump that can be extensively and continuously controlled. The extraordinary features of the new pump originate from interband coherence in nonequilibrium initial states, and this fact indicates that a quantum superposition of different eigenstates individually undergoing quantum adiabatic following can also be an important ingredient unavailable in classical physics. The quantum simulation of this generalized Thouless pump in a two-band insulator is achieved by applying delicate control fields to a single spin in diamond. The experimental results demonstrate all principal characteristics of the generalized Thouless pump. Because the pumping in our system is most pronounced around a band-touching point, this work also suggests an alternative means to detect quantum or topological phase transitions., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

A new laboratory bound on the axial-vector mediated interaction between electron spins at micrometer scale is established with single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. A single crystal of p-terphenyl doped pentacene-d14 under laser pumping provides the source of polarized electron spins. Based on the measurement of polarization signal via nitrogen-vacancy centers, we set a constraint for the exotic electron-electron coupling gAegAe, within the force range from 10 to 900 μm. The obtained upper bound of the coupling at 500 μm is |gAegAe/4πℏc|≤1.8×10−19, which is one order of magnitude more stringent than a previous experiment. Our result shows that the NV center can be a promising platform for searching for new particles predicted by theories beyond the standard model.

We propose a novel theoretical scheme of quantum computation. Nuclear spin pairs are utilized to encode decoherence-free (DF) qubits. A nitrogen-vacancy center serves as a quantum actuator to initialize, readout, and quantum control the DF qubits. The realization of CNOT gates between two DF qubits are also presented. Numerical simulations show high fidelities of all these processes. Additionally, we discuss the potential of scalability. Our scheme reduces the challenge of classical interfaces from controlling and observing complex quantum systems down to a simple quantum actuator. It also provides a novel way to handle complex quantum systems.

Searching for new particles beyond the standard model is crucial for understanding several fundamental conundrums in physics and astrophysics. Several hypothetical particles can mediate exotic spin-dependent interactions between ordinary fermions, which enable laboratory searches via the detection of the interactions. Most laboratory searches utilize a macroscopic source and detector, thus allowing the detection of interactions with submillimeter force range and above. It remains a challenge to detect the interactions at shorter force ranges. Here we propose and demonstrate that a near-surface nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond can be utilized as a quantum sensor to detect the monopole–dipole interaction between an electron spin and nucleons. As a fundamental postulate of quantum mechanics, Born's rule assigns probabilities to the measurement outcomes of quantum systems and excludes multiorder quantum interference. Here we report an experiment on a single spin in diamond to test Born's rule by inspecting the third-order quantum interference. The ratio of the third-order quantum interference to the second order in our experiment is bounded to the scale of $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, which provides a stringent constraint on the potential breakdown of Born's rule.

The adiabatic quantum computation is a universal and robust method of quantum computing. In this architecture, the problem can be solved by adiabatically evolving the quantum processor from the ground state of a simple initial Hamiltonian to that of a final one, which encodes the solution of the problem. Adiabatic quantum computation has been proved to be a compatible candidate for scalable quantum computation. In this Letter, we report on the experimental realization of an adiabatic quantum algorithm on a single solid spin system under ambient conditions. All elements of adiabatic quantum computation, including initial state preparation, adiabatic evolution (simulated by optimal control), and final state read-out, are realized experimentally. As an example, we found the ground state of the problem Hamiltonian ${S}_{z}{I}_{z}$ on our adiabatic quantum processor, which can be mapped to the factorization of 35 into its prime factors 5 and 7.

The investigations for reaction dynamics of the H + FO reaction have been carried out for initial state j = 0 and v = 0 of reagent FO on two high quality potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the 3 A” and 3 A′ energy states developed by Go´mez-Carrasco et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 383 (2004) 25] using quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations. The integral cross section and its dependence on collision energy for the title reaction are presented. The temperature-dependent rate constants are calculated over the temperature range 200–4000 K, fitted using the Arrhenius equation for the title reaction. Isotope effects, the different product channels OH(D) + F, H(D)F + O and their reaction mechanisms on different electronic states of 1 3 A″, 1 3 A′ are investigated by calculating the ratios of corresponding rate constants and then discussing the varying trends and differences. Comparisons and analogies between our calculations and other theoretical results are made to get a deep understanding of the phenomena.

Quantum control of systems plays an important role in modern science and technology. The ultimate goal of quantum control is to achieve high-fidelity universal control in a time-optimal way. Although high-fidelity universal control has been reported in various quantum systems, experimental implementation of time-optimal universal control remains elusive. Here, we report the experimental realization of time-optimal universal control of spin qubits in diamond. By generalizing a recent method for solving quantum brachistochrone equations [X. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 170501 (2015)], we obtained accurate minimum-time protocols for multiple qubits with fixed qubit interactions and a constrained control field. Single- and two-qubit time-optimal gates are experimentally implemented with fidelities of 99% obtained via quantum process tomography. Our work provides a time-optimal route to achieve accurate quantum control and unlocks new capabilities for the emerging field of time-optimal control in general quantum systems.

Quantum correlation quantified by quantum discord has been demonstrated experimentally as important physical resources in quantum computation and communication for some cases even without the presence of entanglement. However, since the interaction between the quantum system and the noisy environment is inevitable, it is essential to protect quantum correlation from lost in the environment and to characterize its dynamical behavior in the real open systems. Here we showed experimentally in the solid-state P:Si system the existence of a stable interval for the quantum correlation in the beginning until a critical time $t_c \approx 166$ ns of the transition from classical to quantum decoherence. To protect the quantum correlation, we achieved the extension of the critical time by 50 times to $8 \mu$s by applying a two-flip dynamical decoupling (DD) pulse sequence. Moreover, we observed the phenomenon of the revival of quantum correlation, as well as classical correlation. The experimental observation of a non-decay interval for quantum correlation and the great extension of it in an important solid-state system with genuine noise makes the use quantum discord as physical resources in quantum information processing more practicable., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, with supplementary materials

Precise control of an open quantum system is critical to quantum information processing but is challenging due to inevitable interactions between the quantum system and the environment. We demonstrated experimentally a type of dynamically corrected gates using only bounded-strength pulses on the nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The infidelity of quantum gates caused by a nuclear-spin bath is reduced from being the second order to the sixth order of the noise-to-control-field ratio, which offers greater efficiency in reducing infidelity. The quantum gates have been protected to the limit essentially set by the spin-lattice relaxation time T1. Our work marks an important step towards fault-tolerant quantum computation in realistic systems.

Quantum systems unfold diversified correlations which have no classical counterparts. These quantum correlations have various different facets. Quantum entanglement, as the most well known measure of quantum correlations, plays essential roles in quantum information processing. However, it has recently been pointed out that quantum entanglement cannot describe all the nonclassicality in the correlations. Thus the study of quantum correlations in separable states attracts widely attentions. Herein, we experimentally investigate the quantum correlations of separable thermal states in terms of quantum discord. The sudden change of quantum discord is observed, which captures ambiguously the critical point associated with the behavior of Hamiltonian. Our results display the potential applications of quantum correlations in studying the fundamental properties of quantum system, such as quantum criticality of non-zero temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Spins constitute a group of quantum objects forming a key resource in modern quantum technology. Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials are of fundamental interest for studying nanoscale magnetic phenomena. However, isolating singular paramagnetic spins in 2D systems is challenging. We report here on a quantum emitting source embedded within hexgonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibiting optical magnetic resonance (ODMR). We extract an isotropic $g$ factor close to 2 and derive an upper bound for a zero field splitting (ZFS) ($\leq$ 4 MHz). Photoluminescence (PL) behavior under temperature cycling using different excitations is presented, assigning probable zero phonon lines (ZPLs) / phonon side band (PSBs) to emission peaks, compatible with h-BN's phonon density of states, indicating their intrinsic nature. Narrow and inhomogeneous broadened ODMR lines differ significantly from monoatomic vacancy defect lines known in literature. We derive a hyperfine coupling of around 10 MHz. Its angular dependence indicates an unpaired electron in an out-of-plane $\pi$-orbital, probably originating from an additional substitutional carbon impurity or other low mass atom. We determine the spin relaxation time $T_1$ to be around 17 $\mu$s.
