Flexoelectric and photo-flexoelectricity are scientifically intriguing and hold considerable potential for various applications such as soft strain sensing, photovoltaics, energy harvesting, etc. Among flexoelectric materials, freestanding ferroelectric thin films are believed to have huge flexoelectricity and tunability due to their excellent lattice regulatory freedom and sustainability to larger strain gradients. In this work, we demonstrated a freestanding BiFeO3(BFO) thin film-based soft strain sensor and explored their flexoelectric coefficient and flexoelectric photovoltaic effect under different strain gradients. Under different bending scales, the photocurrent of the thin film exhibits a step-like variation, indicating that the sensor can measure strain gradient with high sensitivity. These results show the potential application of freestanding ferroelectric films in flexible devices.

In photosynthesis, light energy is absorbed and transferred to the reaction center, ultimately leading to the reduction of quinone molecules through the electron transfer chain. The oxidation and reduction of quinones generate an electrochemical potential difference used for adenosine triphosphate synthesis. The trafficking of quinone/quinol molecules between electron transport components has been a long‐standing question. Here, an atomic‐level investigation into the molecular mechanism of quinol dissociation in the photosynthetic reaction center–light‐harvesting complex 1 (RC–LH1) supercomplexes from Rhodopseudomonas palustris, using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with self‐random acceleration MD‐MD simulations and umbrella sampling methods, is conducted. Results reveal a significant increase in the mobility of quinone molecules upon reduction within RC–LH1, which is accompanied by conformational modifications in the local protein environment. Quinol molecules have a tendency to escape from RC–LH1 in a tail‐first mode, exhibiting channel selectivity, with distinct preferred dissociation pathways in the closed and open LH1 rings. Furthermore, comparative analysis of free energy profiles indicates that alternations in the protein environment accelerate the dissociation of quinol molecules through the open LH1 ring. In particular, aromatic amino acids form π‐stacking interactions with the quinol headgroup, resembling the key components in a conveyor belt system. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms that govern quinone/quinol exchange in bacterial photosynthesis and lays the framework for tuning electron flow and energy conversion to improve metabolic performance.

Abstract Low‐level Jets (LLJs) play a critical role in triggering nocturnal rainfall in many areas on our planet. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the vertically resolved evolution of LLJs preceding rainfall. Here, the high‐resolution wind measurements from a radar wind profiler network in Beijing are used to monitor the continuous evolution of boundary‐layer jets (BLJs) and synoptic‐system‐related LLJs (SLLJs) before nocturnal rainfall under the southwesterlies synoptic pattern for the summers of 2020–2023. The results show that inertial oscillations precede LLJ‐induced nocturnal rainfall. The typical northward propagation of LLJ is driven primarily by horizontal advection. Starting 48 min before rainfall, the BLJ nose rapidly strengthens and moves downward from 0.8 km above ground level (AGL), while the SLLJ nose moves upward to 2.4 km AGL. This leads to enhanced moisture transport and convergence, which triggers nocturnal rainfall. The findings are of great significance for improving the forecast skill of nocturnal rainfall.

Summary: The development of efficient catalysts for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions is critical for establishing a carbon-neutral society powered by renewable ammonia. While significant effort has been focused on Fe and Ru-based catalysts, there have been very limited studies on manganese-based catalysts for ammonia synthesis because of their low intrinsic catalytic activity. Herein, we report that the synergy between manganese nitride (Mn4N) and europium nitride (EuN) yields an ammonia synthesis rate that is 41 and 25 times higher than that of neat Mn4N and EuN, respectively. Detailed studies suggest that a [Eu-N-Mn] species at the interface of Mn4N and EuN plays a pivotal role in ammonia synthesis. Compositing of Mn4N with other rare earth metal nitrides such as LaN, PrN, and CeN also leads to a significant enhancement in catalytic activity. This work broadens the scope of advanced nitride catalysts for ammonia synthesis.

A single-photon detection system based on InGaAs SPADs is a high-precision optical measurement system capable of detecting quantum-level optical signals. However, the afterpulsing effect when using InGaAs SPADs severely limits their practical utility. The impact of afterpulsing effects on the performance of systems based on this type of detector can no longer be ignored. Therefore, this paper provides a detailed analysis of the measurement errors induced by afterpulsing effects and proposes a correction method based on a power-law model. This method analyzes the probability distribution of afterpulsing effects using the power-law model and improves the expressions for the system’s average count rate and signal-to-noise ratio by calculating the average number of afterpulses within the average response time. The influence of afterpulse probability and dead time on the system’s average count rate is also analyzed. This afterpulse correction method mitigates the measurement errors caused by afterpulsing effects, thereby enhancing the system’s measurement accuracy.

To investigate the dynamic changes in dry matter accumulation in maize after anthesis, we established a logistic model to describe grain filling characteristics (GFC), and analyzed differences between spring and summer maize, and the influence of meteorological factors. The results showed that the logistic model accurately simulated the dynamic changes in grain growth. For spring maize, the fitted hundred-grain weight at maturity was closely related to the average grain filling rate until maturity, days of the active grain filling period, time of the maximum grain filling rate, and duration of the rapid increase in grain weight. For summer maize, it was closely related to the time of the maximum grain filling rate, days of active grain filling period, duration of gradual grain weight, and the rapidly increasing period. The filling characteristics of spring and summer maize differed because of the different meteorological conditions and biological characteristics. The grain filling duration of spring maize was longer than that of summer maize. The maximum grain filling rate of spring maize occurred later than that of summer maize. Temperature and precipitation were the main meteorological factors affecting the hundred-grain weight of spring maize, whereas temperature was the main factor affecting summer maize. The response of spring maize GFC to meteorological factors was more complex than that of summer maize. These results are important for the development of appropriate strategies for improving maize productivity in China.

Improving the forecasting skills of the meso-scale convective system (MCS) is one of the key scientific problems in the field of numerical weather prediction. The occurrence and development of severe convective weather are affected by multiple factors such as atmospheric thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, topography, and air pollution conditions. Due largely to the uncertainty in models and the inevitable errors of initial values, large uncertainties still exist for the accurate prediction of severe weather produced by the MCS. Therefore, to effectively improve the accuracy of severe convective weather forecasts in China, conducting targeted observation experiments in key areas of interest, which typically helps to reduce the uncertainty level of the model's initial meteorological field, may be one of the effective ways forward. It follows that the initiation and formation mechanisms of MCS can be revealed, and the forecast skills of severe convection will be improved. In this paper, we first propose the technology roadmap of targeted observation as follows. Based on the modern meteorological observational network over the Jing-Jin-Ji area, the typical MCS forecast sensitive regions are identified by using the Ensemble Transform Kalman filter, combined with the atmospheric sounding systems mounted on the mobile vehicle, where targeted observation experiments will be conducted. As such, convective initiation mechanisms are elucidated, and the novel methods expected to improve the forecast skill for MCS are explored. Secondly, in response to the challenge of "finding needles in a haystack" in the vertical observation of the lower atmosphere for short-term forecasting and warning of severe convective weather in large cities, the potential application value of a dynamic triangular observation mesonet in the study of triggering and development mechanisms of severe convective weather was explored through the construction of a Pyramid-shaped LOwer Tropospheric Observational System (PLOTOS) that consists of five stations with simultaneous vertical observation capabilities. Finally, it is suggested that the initiation and formation mechanisms of severe convective weather be unraveled using PLOTOS, and the mesoscale targeted observation technology be developed, which is crucial to the improvement of weather observational networks in large cities and provide new ideas and methods for improving the forecast of severe convective weather processes.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important grain crops in the world. Drought caused by climate change in recent years may greatly threaten water supply and crop production, even if the drought only lasts for a few days or weeks. Therefore, effective daily drought monitoring for maize is crucial for ensuring food security. A pivotal challenge in current related research may be the selection of data collection and the methodologies in the construction of these indices. Therefore, orthorectified reflectance in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band, which is highly sensitive to variations in vegetation water content, was daily obtained from the MODIS MCD43A4 product. Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) calculated using the NIR and SWIR bands and days after planting (DAP) were normalized to obtain the Vegetation Water Index (VWI) and normalized days after planting (NDAP), respectively. The daily dynamic threshold model for different agricultural drought grades was constructed based on the VWI and NDAP with double-logistic fitting functions during the maize growing season, and its specific threshold was determined with historical drought records. Verification results indicated that the VWI had a good effect on the daily agricultural drought monitoring of spring maize in the “Golden Maize Belt” in northeast China. Drought grades produced by the VWI were completely consistent with historical records for 84.6% of the validation records, and 96.2% of the validation records differed by only one grade level or less. The VWI can not only daily identify the occurrence and development process of drought, but also well reflect the impact of drought on the yield of maize. Moreover, the VWI could be used to monitor the spatial evolution of drought processes at both regional and precise pixel scales. These results contribute to providing theoretical guidance for the daily dynamic monitoring and evaluation of spring maize drought in the “Golden Maize Belt” of China.

Abstract Background With the aging of the population, the burden of elderly gastric cancer (EGC) increases worldwide. However, there is no consensus on the definition of EGC and the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with stage II EGC. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy in defined EGC patients. Methods We enrolled 5762 gastric cancer patients of three independent cohorts from the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (local), the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), and the Asian Cancer Research Group (ACRG). The optimal age cutoff for EGC was determined using the K-adaptive partitioning algorithm. The defined EGC group and the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy for them were confirmed by Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Furthermore, gene set variation analyses (GSVA) were performed to reveal pathway enrichment between groups. Results The optimal age partition value for EGC patients was 75. BackgroundPatients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) combined with resistant hypertension (RH) have a high risk of developing primary aldosteronism (PA). This study investigated the aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR), plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), and plasma renin activity (PRA) to determine the optimal cutoff values for PA diagnosis in patients with OSAHS combined with RH.MethodsPatients diagnosed with moderate and severe OSAHS combined with RH were recruited from the inpatient clinic of the Department of Endocrinology at Ji'an Central Hospital between October 2020 and April 2023. The included patients were divided into PA and no-PA groups. Diagnostic accuracy measures were calculated for each group, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated.ResultsA total of 241 patients were included, of which 103 had positive ARR screening results in the diagnostic accuracy analysis and 66 were diagnosed with PA. PAC and ARR showed moderate predictive capacity for PA, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.66 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.55–0.77] and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.63–0.82), respectively, while PRA exhibited a limited predictive capacity (AUC = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.40–0.63). Using 45 as the optimal cutoff value for ARR, the sensitivity was 86% and the specificity was 52%. The optimal cutoff value for PAC was 17, with a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 55%. Notably, in patients with severe OSAHS, ARR at screening demonstrated significant predictive value for PA, with an AUC of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.72–0.96), a sensitivity of 85%, and a specificity of 76%. Conversely, in patients with moderate OSAHS, only ARR demonstrated significant predictive value for PA diagnosis, while PAC did not demonstrate notable diagnostic value.ConclusionARR and PAC are initial screening tools for PA, facilitating early detection, particularly in low-resource settings. In patients with OSAHS and RH, the ARR and PAC thresholds for PA diagnosis may require more stringent adjustment.

Abstract Kidney fibrosis is a common fate of chronic kidney diseases (CKDs), eventually leading to renal dysfunction. Yet, no effective treatment for this pathological process has been achieved. During the bioassay‐guided chemical investigation of the medicinal plant Wikstroemia chamaedaphne, a daphne diterpenoid, daphnepedunin A (DA), is characterized as a promising anti‐renal fibrotic lead. DA shows significant anti‐kidney fibrosis effects in cultured renal fibroblasts and unilateral ureteral obstructed mice, being more potent than the clinical trial drug pirfenidone. Leveraging the thermal proteome profiling strategy, cell division cycle 42 (Cdc42) is identified as the direct target of DA. Mechanistically, DA targets to reduce Cdc42 activity and down‐regulates its downstream phospho‐protein kinase Cζ(p‐PKCζ)/phospho‐glycogen synthase kinase‐3β (p‐GSK‐3β), thereby promoting β‐catenin Ser33/37/Thr41 phosphorylation and ubiquitin‐dependent proteolysis to block classical pro‐fibrotic β‐catenin signaling. These findings suggest that Cdc42 is a promising therapeutic target for kidney fibrosis, and highlight DA as a potent Cdc42 inhibitor for combating CKDs.

The brown planthopper (BPH) is the most destructive insect pest that threatens rice production globally. Developing rice varieties incorporating BPH-resistant genes has proven to be an effective control measure against BPH. In this study, we assessed the resistance of a core collection consisting of 502 rice germplasms by evaluating resistance scores, weight gain rates and honeydew excretions. A total of 117 rice varieties (23.31%) exhibited resistance to BPH. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed on both the entire panel of 502 rice varieties and its subspecies, and 6 loci were significantly associated with resistance scores (P value < 1.0e-8). Within these loci, we identified eight candidate genes encoding receptor-like protein kinase (RLK), nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR), or LRR proteins. Two loci had not been detected in previous study and were entirely novel. Furthermore, we evaluated the predictive ability of genomic selection for resistance to BPH. The results revealed that the highest prediction accuracy for BPH resistance reached 0.633. As expected, the prediction accuracy increased progressively with an increasing number of SNPs, and a total of 6.7K SNPs displayed comparable accuracy to 268K SNPs. Among various statistical models tested, the random forest model exhibited superior predictive accuracy. Moreover, increasing the size of training population improved prediction accuracy; however, there was no significant difference in prediction accuracy between a training population size of 737 and 1179. Additionally, when there existed close genetic relatedness between the training and validation populations, higher prediction accuracies were observed compared to scenarios when they were genetically distant. These findings provide valuable resistance candidate genes and germplasm resources and are crucial for the application of genomic selection for breeding durable BPH-resistant rice varieties.

Palladium is a prototypical hydride-forming metal, which can accommodate a large volume of hydrogen through the formation of either interstitial or complex hydrides. Interstitial palladium hydrides, especially those with exceptionally high hydrogen loadings, have attracted considerable interest from the low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) community, as they have been invoked to explain the anomalous nuclear effects related to the known but controversial Pons-Fleischmann experiment. Complex palladium hydrides also constitute a class of solid-state hydrides that present stoichiometric PdH2, PdH3, or PdH4 units within the crystal structure, but remain unexplored as far as the unusual H/Pd ratio is concerned. This minireview gives a brief introduction to these two types of solid-state palladium hydrides, with the hope of providing some information for materials development relevant to LENR research.

Abstract Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) offers a new opportunity for treatment for gastric cancer (G.C.). Understanding the upstream regulation of immune checkpoints is crucial to further improve the efficacy of ICB therapy. Herein, using the CRISPR-Cas9-based genome-wide screening, we identified TRIM28 as one of the most significant regulators of PD-L1, a checkpoint protein, in G.C. cells. Mechanistically, TRIM28 directly binds to and stabilizes PD-L1 by inhibiting PD-L1 ubiquitination and promoting PD-L1 SUMOylation. Furthermore, TRIM28 facilitates K63 polyubiquitination of TBK1, activating TBK1-IRF1 and TBK1-mTOR pathways, resulting in enhanced PD-L1 transcription. It was found that TRIM28 was positively correlated with PD-L1 in G.C. cells. Moreover, high TRIM28 expression suggests poor survival in a cohort of 466 patients with G.C., and this observation is consistent while analyzing data from publicly available databases. Ectopic TRIM28 expression facilitated tumor growth, increased PD-L1 expression, and suppressed T cell activation in mice. Administration of the PD-L1 or TBK1 inhibitor significantly alleviated the TRIM28-induced tumor progression. Furthermore, combining the TBK1 inhibitor with CTLA4 immune checkpoint blockade has synergistic effects on G.C., and provides a novel strategy for G.C. therapy.

The integration of high-resolution aerosol measurements into an atmospheric chemistry model can improve air quality forecasting. However, traditional data assimilation methods are challenged in effectively incorporating such detailed aerosol information. This study utilized the WRF-Chem model to conduct data assimilation and prediction experiments using the Himawari-8 satellite’s aerosol optical depth (AOD) product and ground-level particulate matter concentration (PM) measurements during a record-breaking dust event in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region from 14 to 18 March 2021. Three experiments were conducted, comprising a control experiment without assimilation (CTL), a traditional three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) experiment, and a multi-scale three-dimensional variational (MS-3DVAR) experiment. The results indicated that the CTL method significantly underestimated the intensity and extent of the severe dust event, while the analysis fields and forecasting fields of PM concentration and AOD can be significantly improved in both 3DVAR and MS-3DVAR assimilation. Particularly, the MS-3DVAR assimilation approach yielded better-fitting extreme values than the 3DVAR method, mostly likely due to the multi-scale information from the observations used in the MS-3DVAR method. Compared to the CTL method, the correlation coefficient of MS-3DVAR assimilation between the assimilated PM10 analysis fields and observations increased from 0.24 to 0.93, and the positive assimilation effect persisted longer than 36 h. These findings suggest the effectiveness and prolonged influence of integrating high-resolution aerosol observations through MS-3DVAR assimilation in improving aerosol forecasting capabilities.

Abstract Background Treatment failure is the main cause of death from papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). It is urgent to look for new intervention targets and to develop new therapies for treating PTC. Aurora-A kinase (AURKA) functionally regulates cell mitosis and is closely related to the occurrence and development of a variety of tumours. However, the expression and potential functions of AURKA in PTC remain largely elusive. Results Clinicopathologically, AURKA is highly expressed in PTC tissues compared to normal tissues and is correlated with lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and patient prognosis. Biologically, AURKA functions as an oncoprotein to promote the proliferation and migration of PTC cells. Mechanistically, AURKA directly binds to SIN1 and compromises CUL4B-based E3 ligase-mediated ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of SIN1, leading to hyperactivation of the mTORC2-AKT pathway in PTC cells. Conclusions We found that AURKA plays critical roles in regulating the progression of PTC by activating the mTORC2-AKT pathway, highlighting the potential of targeting AURKA to treat PTC.

In this study, we design a one-dimensional periodic ring multi-connected optical waveguide network to solve the problem of obtaining ultra-wide photonic band gaps that are too complex for the photonic band gap width to be tuned. Analysing the spatial structures and numerical relations of our network reveals a common characteristic that the photonic band gap width is independent of the number of nodes in a unit cell of the optical waveguide network. Based on this character, we explore the potential practicability of our network by comparing it with existing optical waveguide network schemes. Our network has the advantages of lower complexity for the spatial topology, better scalability of the spatial topology, and better structural invariance.

Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål, BPH) is one of the most destructive pests of rice. Non-coding RNA plays an important regulatory role in various biological processes. However, comprehensive identification and characterization of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) in BPH-infested rice have not been performed. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis of lncRNAs and circRNAs in BPH6-transgenic (resistant, BPH6G) and Nipponbare (susceptible, NIP) rice plants before and after BPH feeding (early and late stage) via deep RNA-sequencing. A total of 310 lncRNAs and 129 circRNAs were found to be differentially expressed. To reveal the different responses of resistant and susceptible rice to BPH herbivory, the potential functions of these lncRNAs and circRNAs as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) were predicted and investigated using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses. Dual-luciferase reporter assays revealed that miR1846c and miR530 were targeted by the lncRNAs XLOC_042442 and XLOC_028297, respectively. In responsive to BPH infestation, 39 lncRNAs and 21 circRNAs were predicted to combine with 133 common miRNAs and compete for miRNA binding sites with 834 mRNAs. These mRNAs predictably participated in cell wall organization or biogenesis, developmental growth, single-organism cellular process, and the response to stress. This study comprehensively identified and characterized lncRNAs and circRNAs, and integrated their potential ceRNA functions, to reveal the rice BPH-resistance network. These results lay a foundation for further study on the functions of lncRNAs and circRNAs in the rice-BPH interaction, and enriched our understanding of the BPH-resistance response in rice.

When mining deep coal seams with thin bedrock and thick alluvium, the collapse and fracture of thin bedrock layers may cause geological disasters, such as water inrush and sand inrush of the mining face. Comprehensively obtaining the response data of coal mining and reasonably analyzing the failure characteristics of overlying strata are helpful in guiding safe production. In this study, the caving zone heights of overlying strata are obtained by field detection during layered mining. Then, the caving zone heights during the once-full-height mining are evaluated by theoretical analysis. Further, the force and failure characteristics of coal–rock structures under different mining conditions are compared by the simulation detection and analysis. Finally, the results of on-site observation, theoretical analysis, and simulation detection are compared and discussed, and an optimized mining technology is proposed to ensure safe mining. The research shows the caving zone heights of on-site and simulation detections are, respectively, 14.65 m and 13.5 m during bottom-layer mining, which is larger than the caving zone heights of the top-layer coal mining. During once-full-height mining, the maximum caving zone height of simulation detection is 21 m, which is in between two standard results. For the mechanical responses of an aquiclude clay layer under thick loose alluvium, the maximum disturbance displacement of clay aquiclude is 5.8 m during layered mining, which is slightly larger than the disturbance displacement of once full-height mining; however, the maximum stress of the clay layer is 25 MPa during once-full-height mining, which is larger than the maximum stress of clay layer during layered mining. For the clay aquiclude failure, the clay layer during layered mining is in the deflection deformation area, and there is no obvious fracture structure to inrush the water and sand of thick loose alluvium; however, the clay layer during once-full-height mining is prone to produce obvious fracture structure. Therefore, the layered mining technology can effectively reduce and prevent the water/sand inrush disaster of mining working face.

Abstract Aerosol-boundary layer interactions play an important role in affecting atmospheric thermodynamics and air pollution. As a key factor in dictating the development of the boundary layer, the entrainment process in the context of aerosol-boundary layer interactions is still poorly understood. Using comprehensive field observations made at a superstation in Beijing, we gain insight into the response of the entrainment process to aerosols. We found that high aerosol loading can significantly suppress the entrainment rate, breaking the conventional linear relationship between sensible heat fluxes and entrainment fluxes. Related to aerosol vertical distributions, aerosol heating effects can alter vertical heat fluxes, leading to a strong interaction between aerosols and the entrainment process in the upper boundary layer. Such aerosol-entrainment coupling can inhibit boundary layer development and explains the great sensitivity of observed entrainment rates to aerosols than can traditional calculations. The notable impact of aerosols on the entrainment process raises holistic thinking about the dynamic framework of the boundary layer in a polluted atmosphere, which may have a significant bearing on the dispersion of air pollutants and the land-atmosphere coupling.

ABSTRACT Recent evidence emphasized the role of the microbiota in the etiopathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Indeed, it has been demonstrated that urinary tract infections are implicated in RA pathogenesis. However, a definitive association between the urinary tract microbiota and RA remains to be investigated. Urine samples from 39 patients affected by RA, including treatment-naive patients, and 37 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were collected. In RA patients, the urinary microbiota showed an increase in microbial richness and a decrease in microbial dissimilarity, especially in treatment-naive patients. A total of 48 altered genera with different absolute quantities were detected in patients with RA. The 37 enriched genera included Proteus, Faecalibacterium, and Bacteroides, while the 11 deficient genera included Gardnerella, Ruminococcus, Megasphaera, and Ureaplasma. Notably, the more abundant genera in RA patients were correlated with the disease activity score of 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rates (DAS28-ESR) and an increase in plasma B cells. Furthermore, the altered urinary metabolites, such as proline, citric acid, and oxalic acid, were positively associated with RA patients, and they were closely correlated with urinary microbiota. These findings suggested a strong association between the altered urinary microbiota and metabolites with disease severity and dysregulated immune responses in RA patients. IMPORTANCE We revealed that the profile of the urinary tract microbiota in RA featured with increased microbial richness and shifted taxa, associated with immunological and metabolic changes of the disease, underlining the interplay between urinary microbiota and host autoimmunity.

BackgroundInternet addiction (IA) has a significant negative impact on students. The condition of students with IA can be improved by exercise, which has been identified as an effective intervention strategy. However, the relative effectiveness of different exercise types and the most effective ones remains unknown. This study presents a network meta-analysis to compare six exercise types (team sport, double sport, single sport, team + double sport, team + single sport, and team + double + single sport) based on their effectiveness in reducing Internet addiction and maintaining mental health.MethodsSystematic searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wan Fang, CQVIP, Web of Science, CBM, EBSCO, APA PsycNet, and Scopus, and all relevant studies from the beginning to 15 July 2022 were included on. According to the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 Methodological Quality Evaluation Criteria, the listed studies' bias risk was assessed, while the network meta-analysis was performed using STATA 16.0.ResultsA total of 39 randomized controlled trials that met all inclusion criteria including 2,408 students with IA were examined. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the control group, exercising significantly improved loneliness, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal sensitivity (p < 0.05). Specifically, the network meta-analysis discovered that the single sport, team sport, double sport, team + double sport, and team + double + single sport had significant effects on improving Internet addiction as compared to the respective control group (p < 0.05); the single sport, team sport, and double sport tend to be effective compared with controls in improving mental health (p < 0.05). Compared with the other five types of sports, the double sport was ranked first and showed the greatest potential to be the best choice (cluster ranking value = 3699.73) in improving Internet addiction (SUCRA = 85.5) and mental health (SUCRA = 93.1).ConclusionExercise could be suggested as the best alternative when treating IA in students, based on the extensive positive effects of exercise on IA, anxiety, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, loneliness, and mental health in IA students. Double sport may be the best type of exercise for Internet-addicted students. Our knowledge of sea breeze remains poor in the coastal area of East China, due largely to the high terrain heterogeneity. Five–year (2016–2020) consecutive wind observations from a 10-m wind tower and radar wind profiler are used to characterize the sea–land breeze at Qingdao, a coastal city in East China. The sea surface temperatures at the nearby buoy station in the Yellow Sea are further used to elucidate the land–sea thermal contrast. First of all, three types of sea breeze are determined according to the temporal evolution of wind direction, including pure sea breeze (PSB), corkscrew sea breeze (CSB) and backdoor sea breeze (BSB). Statistically, there are 522 days experiencing sea breezes, of which 61 days belong to pure sea breeze, 40 days witness corkscrew sea breeze, and only 2 days see the backdoor sea breeze. The occurrence of sea breeze is found to peak from April to September and the average wind speed lies at 3–5 m s−1. This suggests a salient seasonality of sea breeze at Qingdao, which is likely caused by the seasonal dependence of land–sea thermal contrast. In terms of the diurnal variability, the sea breezes tend to occur more frequently and have more intensity in the afternoon compared with in the morning, irrespective of sea breeze types. Interestingly, the backdoor sea breeze is merely observed in autumn, whereas corkscrew sea breeze and pure sea breeze can be found year round. Among all types of sea breeze, the pure sea breeze has the highest intensity and most frequency throughout the daytime, same in the seasons of spring, summer and autumn. Further analyses are conduced of the atmospheric circulation, lower troposphere stability and bulk Richard number (Ri) for three types of sea breeze. Both pure sea breeze and corkscrew sea breeze in Qingdao are characterized by prevailing westerlies at 500 hPa. In contrast, the backdoor sea breeze is generally accompanied with easterlies at 850 hPa. Meanwhile, the backdoor sea breeze has the lowest lower troposphere stability, in sharp contrast to the highest lower troposphere stability for the pure sea breeze. This indicates that the backdoor sea breeze (pure sea breeze) tends to occur in an unstable (stable) lower troposphere. The findings obtained here highlight the importance of typing sea breeze.

The supergeostrophic flow remains seldomly reported from an observational perspective. Here, 1 year record of radar wind profiler measurements and ERA-5 reanalysis collected at Beijing observatory station are used to characterize the vertical structures of supergeostrophic wind and Ekman spirals in the lower troposphere. It is found that supergeostrophic flow shows significant diurnal variation, with lowest frequency for the supergeostrophic wind forming during daytime under clear-sky conditions, largely due to strong turbulent mixing and friction in the daytime. By comparison, the planetary boundary layer at night is stably stratified, the supergeostrophic wind occurs more frequently due to friction-induced decoupling from the ground surface. Furthermore, the presence of cloud makes the supergeostrophic wind occur more often in the daytime. Also, the geostrophic wind deviation within 1 km of atmosphere is found to be more negatively associated with the difference between surface temperature and 2-m air temperature compared with that in the altitude range of 1–3 km, indicating that the supergeostrophic wind near ground surface is more subject to the influence of heat flux. Intriguingly, most of the vertical wind profiles in the PBL are found not to follow Ekman spiral under neutral atmospheric conditions. The supergeostrophic winds contribute significantly to the magnitude of Ekman spirals in the upper mixed layer. Overall, the profiles and evolution features of the supergeostrophic wind and Ekman spirals observed in the lower troposphere in Beijing are much complicated than expected. The findings lay a solid foundation for better elucidating the low-level atmospheric dynamics in Beijing.

Abstract As a substrate and major effector of the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), the biological functions of ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K) have been canonically assigned for cell size control by facilitating mRNA transcription, splicing, and protein synthesis. However, accumulating evidence implies that diverse stimuli and upstream regulators modulate S6K kinase activity, leading to the activation of a plethora of downstream substrates for distinct pathobiological functions. Beyond controlling cell size, S6K simultaneously plays crucial roles in directing cell apoptosis, metabolism, and feedback regulation of its upstream signals. Thus, we comprehensively summarize the emerging upstream regulators, downstream substrates, mouse models, clinical relevance, and candidate inhibitors for S6K and shed light on S6K as a potential therapeutic target for cancers.

Abstract Building photovoltaic (PV) may provide a growing share of electricity for big cities. However, lack of measured radiation data on vertical surface remains a critical problem for building PV deployment. With the development of urbanization and industrialization, high aerosol load is altering the nature of solar radiation in Beijing. Hence, ten in‐plane solar radiation models are reviewed to choose optimal model for calculating solar radiation on vertical surface in such high turbidity area. At the same time, the effect of atmospheric turbidity on the model accuracy is revealed for further understanding on the optimal model. To give general suggestion on model selection, the performance of the ten models for each weather type is tested based on new method of weather type classification. Finally, solar resource on vertical surface and output energy of building PV system are evaluated by the optimal model to guide building PV deployment. The results indicate that Perez model is suitable to calculate solar radiation on vertical surface in high turbidity area. High atmosphere turbidity will cause Perez model inaccurate. Model selection can be made by the status of atmospheric transmittance. It is feasible to apply building PV in Beijing with AC output energy of 630–971 kWh/kWp/year.

Abstract Background The effective components contained in compound Kushen injection (CKI) and the genes and signalling pathways related to gastric cancer (GC) were analyzed through the network pharmacology method of traditional Chinese medicine, and various possible mechanisms by which CKI affects the proliferation, differentiation, survival, and metastasis of GC cells were discussed. The PI3K/AKT signalling pathway is considered to be one of the most important pathways targeted by CKI in the regulation of GC cells. The implementation of related cell experiments also confirmed the information we revealed. Methods Effective drug components of Kushen and Baituling in CKI were identified from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database (TCMSP). Genes related to GC were identified using the GENECARD and OMIM databases. The common target genes related to the effective components of the drug and GC were identified using the intersection method and visualized using software. A protein–protein interaction network (PPI) was established using STRING online software to confirm the key genes. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were performed to predict the key pathways of CKI in GC treatment. BGC-803 and MKN-28 GC cells were used to verify the signalling pathway. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration ability, and invasion ability were assessed using CCK8, flow cytometry, scratch, and transwell assays. Immunofluorescence assays and western blotting were used to detect the expression of related proteins. Results CKI regulated GC cells through 35 effective drug components of GC-related target genes. In total, 194 genes were common targets of CKI and GC. The most significant function of the enriched genes was DNA-binding transcription activator activity as demonstrated by GO enrichment analysis. The metabolic pathway with the highest enrichment was the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway as demonstrated by KEGG enrichment analysis. Our cell experimental evidence also shows that CKI inhibits GC cell growth and migration and induce GC cell apoptosis. In addition, CKI inhibits the EMT process in GC cells through the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway. Conclusion AKT1 is a key gene for CKI treatment of GC. CKI inhibited GC cell growth and migration and induced GC cell apoptosis. In addition, CKI regulated the EMT process in GC cells through the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway.
