Abstract Background Sepsis is a life-threatening disease accompanied by disorders of the coagulation and immune systems. P2Y12 inhibitors, widely used for arterial thrombosis prevention and treatment, possess recently discovered anti-inflammatory properties, raising potential for improved sepsis prognosis. Method We conducted a retrospective analysis using the data from Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV database. Patients were divided into an aspirin-alone group versus a combination group based on the use of a P2Y12 inhibitor or not. Differences in 30-day mortality, length of stay (LOS) in intensive care unit (ICU), LOS in hospital, bleeding events and thrombotic events were compared between the two groups. Result A total of 1701 pairs of matched patients were obtained by propensity score matching. We found that no statistically significant difference in 30-day mortality in aspirin-alone group and combination group (15.3% vs. 13.7%, log-rank p = 0.154). In addition, patients received P2Y12 inhibitors had a higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (0.5% vs. 1.6%, p = 0.004) and ischemic stroke (1.7% vs. 2.9%, p = 0.023), despite having a shorter LOS in hospital (11.1 vs. 10.3, days, p = 0.043). Cox regression showed that P2Y12 inhibitor was not associated with 30-day mortality (HR = 1.14, 95% CI 0.95–1.36, p = 0.154). Conclusion P2Y12 inhibitors did not provide a survival benefit for patients with sepsis 3 and even led to additional adverse clinical outcomes.

Immune changes and inflammatory responses have been identified as central events in the pathological process of spinal cord injury. They can greatly affect nerve regeneration and functional recovery. However, there is still limited understanding of the peripheral immune inflammatory response in spinal cord injury. In this study, we obtained microRNA expression profiles from the peripheral blood of patients with spinal cord injury using high-throughput sequencing. We also obtained the mRNA expression profile of spinal cord injury patients from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database (GSE151371). We identified 54 differentially expressed microRNAs and 1656 differentially expressed genes using bioinformatics approaches. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that various common immune and inflammation-related signaling pathways, such as neutrophil extracellular trap formation pathway, T cell receptor signaling pathway, and nuclear factor-κB signal pathway, were abnormally activated or inhibited in spinal cord injury patient samples. We applied an integrated strategy that combines weighted gene co-expression network analysis, LASSO logistic regression, and SVM-RFE algorithm and identified three biomarkers associated with spinal cord injury: ANO10, BST1, and ZFP36L2. We verified the expression levels and diagnostic performance of these three genes in the original training dataset and clinical samples through the receiver operating characteristic curve. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction results showed that ANO10 and BST1 mRNA levels were increased and ZFP36L2 mRNA was decreased in the peripheral blood of spinal cord injury patients. We also constructed a small RNA-mRNA interaction network using Cytoscape. Additionally, we evaluated the proportion of 22 types of immune cells in the peripheral blood of spinal cord injury patients using the CIBERSORT tool. The proportions of naïve B cells, plasma cells, monocytes, and neutrophils were increased while the proportions of memory B cells, CD8+ T cells, resting natural killer cells, resting dendritic cells, and eosinophils were markedly decreased in spinal cord injury patients increased compared with healthy subjects, and ANO10, BST1 and ZFP26L2 were closely related to the proportion of certain immune cell types. The findings from this study provide new directions for the development of treatment strategies related to immune inflammation in spinal cord injury and suggest that ANO10, BST1, and ZFP36L2 are potential biomarkers for spinal cord injury. Improving ship classification performance in remote sensing imagery by deep metric learning (DML) is a newly emerging research topic and has good application prospects. From the perspective of the use of metric loss (classification loss and pairwise loss) and the way of proxy learning (a single proxy or multiple proxies), this study summarizes the existing DML methods into four representative frameworks and proposes a novel framework, namely, a unified multiple proxy deep metric learning framework embedded with distribution optimization (UMP+D). Specifically, the UMP+D not only unifies the combination of classification loss and pairwise loss into a single loss function containing only pairwise representation but also fuses it with multiple proxy learning. In addition, a distribution loss branch is embedded in the UMP+D to refine the distribution of samples in the feature embedding space to further tighten the intraclass samples and pull apart the interclass samples. Extensive experiments on two optical remote sensing datasets and one synthetic aperture radar dataset demonstrate that the proposed UMP+D framework outperforms the existing frameworks and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Objective Electroacupuncture (EA) has a definite effect on the treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCIs), but its underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Meanwhile, MiR-106b-5p is an autophagy- and apoptosis-related microribonucleic acid, but whether it regulates the progression of autophagy and apoptosis in SCIs is yet undetermined. As such, this study aimed to elucidate the involvement of miR-106b-5p in the EA treatment of an SCI. Methods The miR-106b-5p level was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. In vitro, SH-SY5Y cells were transfected with miR-106b-5p mimics or inhibitors to regulate the miR-106b-5p expression, while in vivo, SCI rats were treated with EA for 7 days at the bilateral Zusanli (ST36) and Jiaji (EX-B2) acupoints. The motor function was evaluated using the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) criteria. Further, autophagic vacuoles, pathological damage, and neuronal cell morphology were observed by transmission electron microscopy, as well as by hematoxylin and eosin and Nissl staining, respectively. Results The miR-106b-5p level, which can interact directly with Beclin-1 by influencing its expression, as well as the expressions of P62, Caspase-3, and Bax, was upregulated after an SCI, but it decreased after EA. Moreover, the ratio of LC3-II to LC3-I was upregulated after EA. EA can enhance autophagy, reduce neuronal apoptosis, and minimize motor dysfunction and histopathological deficits after an SCI. More importantly, however, all the above effects induced by EA can be reversed after an injection of miR-106-5p agomir to produce an overexpression of miR-106b-5p. Conclusion EA treatment could downregulate miR-106b-5p to alleviate SCI-mediated injuries by promoting autophagy and inhibiting apoptosis.

Fibrotic diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and systemic scleroderma (SSc), are commonly associated with high morbidity and mortality, thereby representing a significant unmet medical need. Interleukin 11 (IL11)-mediated cell activation has been identified as a central mechanism for promoting fibrosis downstream of TGFβ. IL11 signaling has recently been reported to promote fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition, thus leading to various pro-fibrotic phenotypic changes. We confirmed increased mRNA expression of IL11 and IL11Rα in fibrotic diseases by OMICs approaches and in situ hybridization. However, the vital role of IL11 as a driver for fibrosis was not recapitulated. While induction of IL11 secretion was observed downstream of TGFβ signaling in human lung fibroblasts and epithelial cells, the cellular responses induced by IL11 was quantitatively and qualitatively inferior to that of TGFβ at the transcriptional and translational levels. IL11 blocking antibodies inhibited IL11Rα-proximal STAT3 activation but failed to block TGFβ-induced profibrotic signals. In summary, our results challenge the concept of IL11 blockade as a strategy for providing transformative treatment for fibrosis.

To explore the in vivo hypolipidemic effect of the compound composition of crataegus, ume, grape skin, wolfberry and mulberry. There were 50 SPF-grade healthy male SD rats, 10 rats were given maintenance feed as a blank control group, and 40 rats were given model feed as a model group. After the model group was given the model feed for 2 weeks, the 40 animals in the model group were randomly divided into 4 groups according to the TC level, namely high, medium and low dose groups (1.5, 0.5, 0.25g/kg·BW) and the model control group. After grouping, the three dose groups were given the test sample orally at 10mL/kg·BW every day, and the blank control group and the model control group were given the same volume of distilled water at the same time. After continuous intragastric administration for 30 days, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured. The liver coefficient, hepatic lipase (HL), and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity levels were measured, and the degree of hepatic steatosis was observed by HE staining. Abstract Myopic glasses design has critical effects on the match between glasses and individual face. Improper myopic glasses design may affect the try-on comfort and health. It is difficult for the myopic glasses to be adjusted variedly and suitably from people to people with the limitations of traditional manufacturing processes and current design methods. In this paper, an evaluation descriptor named glasses fit score, which contains alignment scores and design scores, is proposed to guide and evaluate the myopic glasses design. Based on the descriptor, a novel approach is presented to complete the myopic glasses design and manufacturing individually. The approach can be divided into three steps: glasses alignment, glasses personalized design and glasses manufacturing. During the glasses alignment, the myopic glasses are aligned to the face to obtain the alignment score of the descriptor based on the face symmetry plane and feature points, including the silent point of the eye and the top point of the ear. After the glasses alignment, the myopic glasses can be deformed to match the face to achieve the design score of the descriptor. The deformations include glasses frame transformation, glasses leg option and glasses personalized mark. In the glasses manufacturing, the designed myopic glasses can be fabricated by a 3D printer. Then, a post processing process is conducted to polish the myopic glasses with oil painted. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to adjust the myopic glasses for several people. The results show that, compared to the previous methods, the approach can make the myopic glasses aligned and deformed to the individual face effectively to obtain an ideal score of the descriptor, thus improving the match between the glasses and the individual face.

ABSTRACT Importance Recurrent respiratory tract infection (RRTI) is common in children. Inappropriate RRTI treatment will lead to asthma and other diseases, thereby seriously affecting the growth and physical health of children. Immune function modulation can prevent and alleviate childhood RRTI. Yupingfeng (YPF), a patented traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has immunomodulatory effects and is widely used in China to treat children with RRTI. Objective To evaluate the safety and efficacy of YPF monotherapy in treating children with RRTI. Methods This multicenter, randomized, double‐blind, double‐simulation, noninferiority clinical trial was conducted from January 2015 to August 2017, with an 8‐week treatment period and 52‐week follow‐up after the drug withdrawal. Children aged 2–6 years with RRTI meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in 13 hospitals in China and divided randomly into three groups (2:2:1 ratio) to receive YPF, pidotimod, or placebo. The primary outcome was the proportion of RRTI returning to normal standard level during the follow‐up. The secondary outcomes were reduction in the number of RRTI recurrences, effect on clinical symptoms (in accord with TCM practice), effect per symptom, and safety. The trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (www.chictr.org.cn) under the unique identifier ChiCTR‐IPR‐15006847. Results Three hundred and fifty‐one children were enrolled and randomly assigned to 3 groups; 124, 125, and 61 children in the YPF, pidotimod, and placebo groups, respectively, had completed the trial. BackgroundThe cardiometabolic index (CMI) has been proposed as a novel indicator of cardiometabolic status. However, evidence on the relationship between CMI and diabetes mellitus (DM) risk was limited. Our study aimed to explore the relationship between CMI and DM risk among a large cohort of Japanese adults.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study recruited 15453 Japanese adults without diabetes at baseline who underwent physical examinations at the Murakami Memorial Hospital between 2004 and 2015. Cox proportional-hazards regression was applied to evaluate the independent relationship between CMI and diabetes. Our study performed a generalized smooth curve fitting (penalized spline technique) and an additive model (GAM) to determine the non-linear relationship between CMI and DM risk. Background: To establish a population pharmacokinetics (PPK) model of vancomycin (VCM) for dose individualization in Chinese infants with meningitis. Methods: We collected the data of 82 children with meningitis in hospital from July 2014 to June 2016. The initial vancomycin dosage regimen for children was 10 or 15 mg/kg for q12 h, q8 h or q6 h. Serum concentrations were determined by Viva-E Analyzer before and after the fifth administration. The PPK model was developed by nonlinear mixed-effect model software, assessed by the bootstrap method and then tested in 20 infant patients. Results: The VCM clearance (CL) was increased by body weight (WT) and decreased by blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Pharmacokinetic parameters of VCM were not influenced by co-administered drugs. The trough concentrations of VCM were accurately predicted by the PPK model, with the prediction errors less than 32%. Conclusion: A new individual strategy for VCM regimens was proposed and validated by the PPK model.

Abstract Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a widely used protocol to realize high-fidelity and robust quantum control in various quantum systems. However, further application of this protocol in superconducting qubits is limited by population leakage caused by the only weak anharmonicity. Here, we introduce an optimally controlled shortcut-to-adiabatic (STA) technique to speed-up the STIRAP protocol in a superconducting qudit. By modifying the shapes of the STIRAP pulses, we experimentally realize a fast (32 ns) and high-fidelity (0.996 ± 0.005) quantum state transfer. In addition, we demonstrate that our protocol is robust against control parameter perturbations. Our stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage transition provides an efficient and practical approach for quantum information processing.

Crop wild relatives are an important reservoir of natural biodiversity. However, incorporating wild genetic diversity into breeding programs is often hampered by reproductive barriers and a lack of accurate genomic information. We assembled a high-quality, accurately centromere-anchored genome of Gossypium anomalum, a stress-tolerant wild cotton species. We provided a strategy to discover and transfer agronomically valuable genes from wild diploid species to tetraploid cotton cultivars. With a (Gossypium hirsutum × G. anomalum)2 hexaploid as a bridge parent, we developed a set of 74 diploid chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) of the wild cotton species G. anomalum in the G. hirsutum background. This set of CSSLs included 70 homozygous substitutions and four heterozygous substitutions, and it collectively contained about 72.22% of the G. anomalum genome. Twenty-four quantitative trait loci associated with plant height, yield, and fiber qualities were detected on 15 substitution segments. Integrating the reference genome with agronomic trait evaluation of the CSSLs enabled location and cloning of two G. anomalum genes that encode peroxiredoxin and putative callose synthase 8, respectively, conferring drought tolerance and improving fiber strength. We have demonstrated the power of a high-quality wild-species reference genome for identifying agronomically valuable alleles to facilitate interspecific introgression breeding in crops.

MYB transcription factors (TFs) comprise a large gene family that plays an important role in plant growth, development, stress responses, and defense regulation. However, their functions in peanut remain to be further elucidated. Here, we identified six AhMYB44 genes (AhMYB44-01/11, AhMYB44-05/15, and AhMYB44-06/16) in cultivated peanut. They are typical R2R3-MYB TFs and have many similarities but different expression patterns in response to drought stress, suggesting different functions under drought stress. Homologous genes with higher expression in each pair were selected for further study. All of them were nuclear proteins and had no self-transactivation activity. In addition, we compared the performances of different lines at germination, seedling, and adult stages under drought stress. After drought treatment, the overexpression of AhMYB44-11 transgenic plants resulted in the longest root length at the seedling stage. Levels of proline, soluble sugar and chlorophyll, and expression levels of stress-related genes, including P5CS1, RD29A, CBF1, and COR15A, were higher than those of the wild type (WT) at the adult stage. While the overexpression of AhMYB44-16 significantly increased the drought sensitivity of plants at all stages, with differential ABA content, the expression levels of the ABA-related genes PP2CA and ABI1 were significantly upregulated and those of ABA1 and ABA2 were significantly downregulated compared with the WT. AhMYB44-05 showed similar downregulated expression as AhMYB44-16 under drought stress, but its overexpression in Arabidopsis did not significantly affect the drought resistance of transgenic plants. Based on the results, we propose that AhMYB44-11 plays a role as a positive factor in drought tolerance by increasing the transcription abundance of stress-related genes and the accumulation of osmolytes, while AhMYB44-16 negatively regulates drought tolerance through its involvement in ABA-dependent stress response pathways.

Over the past decade, therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have established their role as valuable agents in the treatment of various diseases ranging from cancers to infectious, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. Reactive groups of the amino acids within these proteins make them susceptible to many kinds of chemical modifications during manufacturing, storage and in vivo circulation. Among these reactions, the oxidation of methionine residues to their sulfoxide form is a commonly observed chemical modification in mAbs. When the oxidized methionine is in the complementarity-determining region (CDR), this modification can affect antigen binding and thus abrogate biological activity. For these reasons, it is essential to identify oxidation liabilities during the antibody discovery and development phases. Here, we present an in silico method, based on protein modeling and molecular dynamics simulations, to predict the oxidation-liable residues in the variable region of therapeutic antibodies. Previous studies have used the 2-shell water coordination number descriptor (WCN) to identify methionine residues susceptible to oxidation. Although the WCN descriptor successfully predicted oxidation liabilities when the residue was solvent exposed, the method was much less accurate for partially buried methionine residues. Consequently, we introduce a new descriptor, WCN-OH, that improves the accuracy of prediction of methionine oxidation susceptibility by extending the theoretical framework of the water coordination number to incorporate the effects of polar amino acids side chains in close proximity to the methionine of interest.

Abnormal alterations in the expression and biological function of retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRα) have a key role in the development of cancer. Potential modulators of RXRα as anticancer agents are explored in growing numbers of studies. A series of (4/3-(pyrimidin-2-ylamino)benzoyl)hydrazine-1-carboxamide/carbothioamide derivatives are synthesised and evaluated for anticancer activity as RXRα antagonists in this study. Among all synthesised compounds, 6A shows strong antagonist activity (half maximal effective concentration (EC50) = 1.68 ± 0.22 µM), potent anti-proliferative activity against human cancer cell lines HepG2 and A549 cells (50% inhibition of cell viability (IC50) values < 10 µM), and low cytotoxic property in normal cells such as LO2 and MRC-5 cells (IC50 values > 100 µM). Further bioassays indicate that 6A inhibits 9-cis-RA-induced activity in a dose-dependent manner, and selectively binds to RXRα-=LΒD with submicromolar affinity (Kd = 1.20 × 10−7 M). 6A induces time-and dose-dependent cleavage of poly ADP-ribose polymerase, and significantly stimulates caspase-3 activity, leading to RXRα-dependent apoptosis. Finally, molecular docking studies predict the binding modes for RXRα-LBD and 6A.

Abstract Background The mechanisms underlying the online modulation of motor speech in Parkinson’s disease (PD) have not been determined. Moreover, medical and rehabilitation interventions for PD-associated motor speech disorder (MSD) have a poor long-term prognosis. Methods To compare risk factors in PD patients with MSD to those without MSD (non-MSD) and determine predictive independent risk factors correlated with the MSD phenotype, we enrolled 314 PD patients, including 250 with and 64 without MSD. We compared demographic, characteristic data, as well as PD-associated evaluations between the MSD group and non-MSD group. Results Univariate analysis showed that demographic characteristics, including occupation, educational level, monthly income and speaking background; clinical characteristics, including lesions in the frontal and temporal lobes, and concurrent dysphagia; and PD-associated evaluations, including the activity of daily living (ADL) score, non-motor symptoms scale (NMSS) domain 4 score (perceptual problem), and NMSS domain 5 score (attention/memory) were all significantly different between the MSD and non-MSD group (all P

Verticillium wilt (VW) is a soil-borne fungal disease caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb, which leads to serious damage to cotton production annually in the world. In our previous study, a transmembrane protein 214 protein (TMEM214) gene associated with VW resistance was map-based cloned from Gossypium barbadense (G. barbadense). TMEM214 proteins are a kind of transmembrane protein, but their function in plants is rarely studied. To reveal the function of TMEM214s in VW resistance, all six TMEM214s were cloned from G. barbadense in this study. These genes were named as GbTMEM214-1_A/D, GbTMEM214-4_A/D and GbTMEM214-7_A/D, according to their location on the chromosomes. The encoded proteins are all located on the cell membrane. TMEM214 genes were all induced with Verticillium dahliae inoculation and showed significant differences between resistant and susceptible varieties, but the expression patterns of GbTMEM214s under different hormone treatments were significantly different. Virus-induced gene silencing analysis showed the resistance to VW of GbTMEM214s-silenced lines decreased significantly, which further proves the important role of GbTMEM214s in the resistance to Verticillium dahliae. Our study provides an insight into the involvement of GbTMEM214s in VW resistance, which was helpful to better understand the disease-resistance mechanism of plants.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to simply and sensitively detect the artificial sweetener aspartame added to purified water. In this paper, a cavity formed spontaneously by silver ion droplets, and liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as an SERS substrate to integrate plasma nanoparticles into optical devices. Firstly, Raman spectral characteristics of aspartame powder and aspartame aqueous solution were analyzed. Secondly, the effect of aspartame content in purified water on SERS intensity was investigated by using the prepared PDMS plasma cavity to test the samples. Thirdly, the SERS calibration curve was established by using the characteristic peak intensity of aspartame, and a good linearity relationship between the concentration of aspartame added in purified water and the characteristic peak intensity of 1588(±5) cm-1 was obtained. The linear regression equation and correlation coefficient (r) were y = 11412.73874 x + 107.36722 and 0.99593, respectively. The average recovery of aspartame in purified water was 101–106%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 0.121–0.496%. The experimental results show that using this method can detect aspartame in purified water correctly, which is expected to be used in the identification and detection of sweeteners in purified water.

Verticillium wilt (VW) is a soil-borne fungal disease that is caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb and seriously damages cotton production annually in China. To date, many efforts have been made to improve the resistance of upland cotton against VW, but little progress has been achieved because of a lack of resistant upland cotton to VW. G. barbadense is known to carry high resistance to VW; however, it is difficult to transfer the resistance trait from G. barbadense to upland cotton because of linkage drag and distortion in the interspecific hybrid. In this study, a chromosomal segment introgression line (CSIL), SuVR043, containing a single and homozygous chromosome segment of G. barbadense cv. H7124 D04 (Chr 22), was created and used to construct an F2 population for mapping of VW resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in the greenhouse. Two major resistance QTLs against nondefoliating V. dahliae isolate Bp2, called qVW-Bp2-1 and qVW-Bp2-2, which were flanked by the markers cgr6409-ZHX37 and ZHX57-ZHX70 and explained an average of 16.38 and 22.36% of the observed phenotypic variation, respectively, were detected in three independent replicate experiments. The genetic distances from cgr6409 to ZHX37 and from ZHX57 to ZHX70 were 2.4 and 0.8 cM, respectively. By analyzing the genome sequence of the qVW-Bp2-1 and qVW-Bp2-2 regions, we determined that the accurate physical distances from cgr6409 to ZHX37 and from ZHX57 to ZHX70 in the G. barbadense genome are 254 and 140 kb, and that those spans 36 and 20 putative genes, respectively. The results of the expression analysis showed significant differences in the expression profiles of GbCYP450, GbTMEM214, and GbRLK among G. barbadense cv. H7124, CSIL SuVR043 and G. hirsutum acc. Sumian 8 at different times after inoculation with V. dahliae isolate Bp2. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) analysis showed that silencing of GbCYP450 and GbTMEM214 decreased H7124 and CSIL SuVR043 resistance to VW. These results form a solid foundation for fine mapping and cloning of resistance genes in the substituted segment and will provide valuable assistance in future efforts to breed for VW resistance.

Based on the axisymmetric large-strain consolidation (ALSC) model with the void ratio as the variable under equal strain condition, difference schemes of model’s equation, initial condition, and boundary condition were given. Taking phosphatic clay in Florida as a research object, the consolidation behaviors of soil with high water content by axisymmetric large-strain theory and one-dimensional large-strain theory were analyzed. The effect of different kinds of consolidation theories and self-weight stress on an average degree of consolidation was evaluated. The development of the void ratio and excess pore water pressure along the soil layer was clarified. The results show that the theoretical value of Terzaghi’s consolidation degree is always less than that of ALSC (Us, the average degree of consolidation defined by strain)-vertical drainage in the consolidation process. Terzaghi’s solution overestimates the dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure during the earlier consolidation period but underestimates it during the later consolidation period. The degree of consolidation calculated by Hansbo develops faster than ALSC (Up, the average degree of consolidation defined by stress)-radial drainage, but slower than ALSC (Us)-radial drainage. In the ALSC model, Us is always been faster than Up. The effect of self-weight on the consolidation degree of axisymmetric large-strain consolidation theory is relatively small (maximum error is less than 16%), while it can accelerate the consolidation rate of soil in one-dimensional large-strain consolidation theory largely. When only the vertical drainage occurs, the consolidation rate in the middle of the soil is obviously lagging the upper and lower parts, while the radial drainage can reduce the void ratio and the excess pore water pressure along the soil layer uniformly and more rapidly.

Inspired by the concept of energy internet and energy problems including greenhouse gas emission and regional shortage, this article will propose an idea of electric power distribution using city bus lines running electric vehicles. The designed power distribution system includes renewable energy sources as the energy input, power storage stations placed at some bus stops as the fixed energy output, and bus lines running electric vehicles as the connections between them. As the basic and priority problem, choosing the suitable location to place power storage stations can not only reduce the total number of construction but also increase the utilization rate of each one. Main work involves the two branch algorithms for solving the placement problem; simulation while using real-world transportation data of two city bus maps and analysis about the advantages and disadvantages of algorithms.

InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells were irradiated with 5.1 MeV alpha particles with different fluences. The degradations of the optical and electrical properties of InGaP/GaAs/Ge solar cells were described in terms of the variation in the short-circuit current (Isc), the open-circuit voltage (Voc), the maximum power (Pmax), the spectral response (SR), and the photoluminescence (PL) versus the 5.1 MeV alpha-particle fluences. The degradation modeling of the Isc and Voc under 1 MeV, 3 MeV, and 5.1 MeV alpha-particle irradiation was performed by calculating the introduction rate of non-radiative recombination centers, and the minority-carrier capture cross section, and the results were in good agreement with experimental data. For comparison, the degradations of the Isc and Voc were presented under 1 MeV and 3 MeV proton irradiation.

Salt stress is one of most serious limiting factors for crop growth and production. An isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) approach was used to analyze proteomic changes in rice shoots under salt stress in this study. A total of 56 proteins were significantly altered and 16 of them were enriched in the pathways of photosynthesis, antioxidant and oxidative phosphorylation. Among these 16 proteins, peroxiredoxin Q and photosystem I subunit D were up-regulated, while thioredoxin M-like, thioredoxin x, thioredoxin peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase F3, PSI subunit H, light-harvesting antenna complex I subunits, chloroplast chaperonin, vacuolar ATP synthase subunit H, and ATP synthase delta chain were down-regulated. Moreover, physiological data including total antioxidant capacity, peroxiredoxin activity, chlorophyll a/b content, glutathione S-transferase activity, reduced glutathione content and ATPase activity were consistent with changes in the levels of these proteins. The levels of the mRNAs encoding these proteins were also analyzed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR, and approximately 86% of the results were consistent with the iTRAQ data. Importantly, our data suggest the important role of PSI in balancing energy supply and ROS generation under salt stress. This study provides information for an improved understanding of the function of photosynthesis and PSI in the salt-stress response of rice.

Objective: Electroacupuncture (EA) has a definite effect on the treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCIs), but its underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Meanwhile, MiR106b-5p is an autophagy- and apoptosis-related microribonucleic acid, but whether it regulates the progression of autophagy and apoptosis in SCIs is yet undetermined. As such, this study aimed to elucidate the involvement of miR-106b-5p in the EA treatment of an SCI. Methods: The miR-106b-5p level was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. In vitro, SH-SY5Y cells were transfected with miR-106b-5p mimics or inhibitors to regulate the miR-106b-5p expression, while in vivo, SCI rats were treated with EA for 7 days at the bilateral Zusanli (ST36) and Jiaji (EX-B2) acupoints. The motor function was evaluated using the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) criteria. Further, autophagic vacuoles, pathological damage, and neuronal cell morphology were observed by transmission electron microscopy, as well as by hematoxylin and eosin and Nissl staining, respectively. Results: The miR-106b-5p level, which can interact directly with Beclin-1 by influencing its expression, as well as the expressions of P62, Caspase-3, and Bax, was upregulated after an SCI, but it decreased after EA. Moreover, the ratio of LC3-II to LC3-I was upregulated after EA. EA can enhance autophagy, reduce neuronal apoptosis, and minimize motor dysfunction and histopathological deficits after an SCI. More importantly, however, all the above effects induced by EA can be reversed after an injection of miR-106-5p agomir to produce an overexpression of miR-106b-5p. Conclusion: EA treatment could downregulate miR-106b-5p to alleviate SCI-mediated injuries by promoting autophagy and inhibiting apoptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
