Water decoupling charge blasting excels in rock breaking, relying on its uniform pressure transmission and low energy dissipation. The water decoupling coefficients can adjust the contributions of the stress wave and quasi-static pressure. However, the quantitative relationship between the two contributions is unclear, and it is difficult to provide reasonable theoretical support for the design of water decoupling blasting. In this study, a theoretical model of blasting fracturing partitioning is established. The mechanical mechanism and determination method of the optimal decoupling coefficient are obtained. The reliability is verified through model experiments and a field test. The results show that with the increasing of decoupling coefficient, the rock breaking ability of blasting dynamic action decreases, while quasi-static action increases and then decreases. The ability of quasi-static action to wedge into cracks changes due to the spatial adjustment of the blast hole and crushed zone. The quasi-static action plays a leading role in the fracturing range, determining an optimal decoupling coefficient. The optimal water decoupling coefficient is not a fixed value, which can be obtained by the proposed theoretical model. Compared with the theoretical results, the maximum error in the model experiment results is 8.03%, and the error in the field test result is 3.04%.

In the present work, the temperature and strain-rate dependence of the superelastic response behavior of NiTi shape memory alloys prepared via electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) technique and post-heat-treated is systematically studied. It is demonstrated that the response hysteresis of the EBF3-fabricated NiTi alloys during superelastic cycling decreases with increasing strain-rate at the same test temperature. However, the superelastic response of material gradually alters to a nearly linear mode with the increase of test temperature under the same strain-rate. The corresponding stable superelasticity recovery ratio decreases from 62.6 % to 47.6 % when the test temperature improves from 100 °C to 150 °C. This is mainly due to the activation of dislocations in the {011} slip system of B2 austenite, in which they become plugged and entangled during plastic deformation, deteriorating the material superelastic recovery ability. These findings provide a selection basis for the service conditions of the rapidly prepared NiTi alloys under EBF3-fabrication and post-heat-treatment technology routes.

IntroductionThe impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on the soil N-transforming process in grasslands necessitates further investigation into how N input influences the structural composition and diversity of soil N-cycling microbial communities across different grassland types.MethodsIn this study, we selected two types of grassland soils in northwest Liaoning, temperate steppe and warm-temperate shrub, and conducted short-term N addition experiments using organic N, ammonium N, and nitrate N as sources with three concentration gradients to simulate N deposition. Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology was employed to sequence genes associated with N-cycling microbes including N-fixing, ammonia-oxidizing and denitrifying bacteria, and ammonia-oxidizing archaea.Results and discussionThe results revealed significant alterations in the structural composition and diversity of the N-cycling microbial community due to N addition, but the response of soil microorganisms varied inconsistent among different grassland types. Ammonium transformation rates had a greater impact on soils from temperate steppes while nitrification rates were more influential for soils from warm-temperate shrubs. Furthermore, the influence of the type of N source on soil N-cycling microorganisms outweighed that of its quantity applied. The ammonium type of nitrogen source is considered the most influential driving factor affecting changes in the structure of the microbial community involved in nitrogen transformation, while the amount of low nitrogen applied primarily determines the composition of soil bacterial communities engaged in nitrogen fixation and nitrification. Different groups of N-cycling microorganisms exhibited distinct responses to varying levels of nitrogen addition with a positive correlation observed between their composition, diversity, and environmental factors examined. Overall findings suggest that short-term nitrogen deposition may sustain dominant processes such as soil-N fixation within grasslands over an extended period without causing significant negative effects on northwestern Liaoning’s grassland ecosystems within the next decade.

Conclusion: The identified lipotoxicity-related hub genes provide a deeper understanding of the development mechanisms of DN, potentially offering new theoretical foundations for the development of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets related to lipotoxicity in DN.

Continuous nitrogen deposition increases the nitrogen content of terrestrial ecosystems and alters the soil nitrogen cycling process. Invasive plants have strong environmental adaptability, which can not only affect the composition and diversity of soil microbial community but also significantly affect the transformation process of soil nitrogen, leading to successful invasion. Currently, research on invasive plant soil ecosystems mainly focused on changes in soil nutrients and soil microorganisms. As an invasive annual grass weed with strong ecological adaptability, the impact of Cenchrus spinifex at different growth periods on soil environment and soil microbial structure composition and diversity in sandy grassland ecosystems is still unclear. In this study, soil samples were collected from four habitats with different degrees of invasion in situ during the vegetation and reproductive growth periods of Cenchrus spinifex. High-throughput sequencing and qPCR technology were used to analyze the changes in the composition, structure and diversity characteristics of the soil microbial communities during Cenchrus spinifex invasion. The results indicated that Cenchrus spinifex invasion had different effects on the soil environment at different growth periods, and Cenchrus spinifex had a preference for the utilization of ammonium nitrogen during vegetation growth period. Moreover, Cenchrus spinifex invasion significantly changed the composition and structure of soil bacterial communities, and the response of soil bacterial and fungal communities to the invasion was inconsistent. Additionally, the bacterial network was more stable than the fungal network. At different growth periods, Cenchrus spinifex had a significant impact on the key microbial communities of soil nitrogen cycling. The invasion increased the abundance of nifH and AOA-amoA, while decreased the abundance of AOA-amoB. Alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen, total nitrogen and total phosphorus content were key factors that affect vegetation growth period and change the key microbial communities of nitrogen cycling. Alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen, total phosphorus and organic carbon were key factors in reproductive growth period that alter the nitrogen cycling of key microbial communities.

With the increasing demand for underground resources in China, the construction of ultra-deep shafts is becoming more and more popular. In order to stabilize the shaft wall and reduce the collapse of the shaft wall during the shaft excavation, the freezing method is generally used in the construction. However, the vibration generated during blasting will still have a certain impact on the stability of the shaft wall. In severe cases, even collapse will occur, causing certain casualties, delaying the construction progress and increasing the project cost. In order to solve such problems, based on the research background of 704.6 m deep alluvium frozen soil blasting excavation project in the west wind shaft of Zhaogu No. 2 Coal Mine, the vibration monitoring of deep shaft frozen soil blasting shaft wall was carried out, and combined with the ANSYS/LS-DYNA analysis software, the three-dimensional numerical model of shaft multi-stage blasting was established to deeply explore the vibration response law of shaft wall under frozen soil blasting excavation in the frozen topsoil section. The monitoring results show that the waveform of each section of the time-history curve of shaft wall vibration caused by frozen soil blasting is obviously distinguished. The blasting of segment 3 auxiliary holes with large charge and dense blasthole distribution has the greatest impact on shaft lining vibration, but they are all within the safety range which is 8.39 cm/s. For the cutting blasting segment, the shaft wall is mainly affected by longitudinal wave to produce vibration, and the vertical vibration velocity is greater than the radial and tangential vibration velocity. During auxiliary blasting, with the increase of free surface, the force generated by blasting gradually extends to the horizontal direction, the radial vibration velocity of the shaft wall gradually dominates, and the vertical vibration velocity decreases relatively. Based on one-dimensional elastic wave theory, the relationship between the vibration velocity of the shaft wall caused by blasting and the concrete stress is analyzed. The calculation results are less than the tensile strength of concrete. The reliability and accuracy of the model are verified by comparing the numerical simulation results with the measured vibration velocity waveform, and the vibration velocity in the vertical direction of the particle closest to the wellbore is 23 cm/s, which is within the safe range. The research ideas and methods can provide certain reference for the construction and vibration control of the same type of shaft blasting in frozen soil.

The structural face of rock plays a decisive role in the stability of geotechnical engineering, and the mechanism of failure destabilization of layered rock masses is still unclear. By preparing rock-like materials, shear failure tests on layered rock masses were carried out under different bedding dip angles, different rock bridge width, different normal forces, and forward and reverse shear effects. With the increase in the rock bridge width, the influence of the joint inclination angle on the shear failure process of the rock sample decreases; the peak shear strength of the specimen is the largest when the joint inclination angle is 60°, followed by 90°, 30° and 0° from large to small; the failure mode in forward shear is mainly tensile failure, and the failure mode in reversed shear is mainly shear failure; the peak number of acoustic emission events is proportional to the joint inclination angle and the rock bridge width of the specimen, and the number of acoustic emission events is proportional to the joint inclination angle and the rock bridge width of the specimen. The number of acoustic emission peak events is proportional to the bedding angle of the sample and the width of the rock bridge. The peak number of acoustic emission events in the reverse shear of the layered rock mass is greater than that in the forward shear. The angle of the lamina and the width of the rock bridge are both important factors affecting the strength of the rock. The results of this study provide a basis for identifying the shear failure mechanism of rock bridge in layered rock masses.

IntroductionSoil microbial communities are critical in regulating grassland biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functions, but the mechanisms of how environmental factors affect changes in the structural composition and diversity of soil microbial communities in different grassland soil types is not fully understood in northwest Liaoning, China.MethodsWe investigated the characteristics and drivers of bacterial and fungal communities in 4 grassland soil types with 11 sites across this region using high-throughput Illumina sequencing.Results and DiscussionActinobacteria and Ascomycota were the dominant phyla of bacterial and fungal communities, respectively, but their relative abundances were not significantly different among different grassland soil types. The abundance, number of OTUs, number of species and diversity of both bacterial and fungal communities in warm and temperate ecotone soil were the highest, while the warm-temperate shrub soil had the lowest microbial diversity. Besides, environmental factors were not significantly correlated with soil bacterial Alpha diversity index. However, there was a highly significant negative correlation between soil pH and Shannon index of fungal communities, and a highly significant positive correlation between plant cover and Chao1 index as well as Observed species of fungal communities. Analysis of similarities showed that the structural composition of microbial communities differed significantly among different grassland soil types. Meanwhile, the microbial community structure of temperate steppe-sandy soil was significantly different from that of other grassland soil types. Redundancy analysis revealed that soil total nitrogen content, pH and conductivity were important influencing factors causing changes in soil bacterial communities, while soil organic carbon, total nitrogen content and conductivity mainly drove the differentiation of soil fungal communities. In addition, the degree of connection in the soil bacterial network of grassland was much higher than that in the fungal network and soil bacterial and fungal communities were inconsistently limited by environmental factors. Our results showed that the microbial community structure, composition and diversity of different grassland soil types in northwest Liaoning differed significantly and were significantly influenced by environmental factors. Microbial community structure and the observation of soil total nitrogen and organic carbon content can predict the health changes of grassland ecosystems to a certain extent.

Dendrobium officinale is an orchid with medicinal and nutritional properties that has received increasing attention because of its health benefits; however, there is limited information about the metabolic basis of these properties. In this report, secondary metabolites and the antioxidant activity of D. officinale stem samples from three provenances were analyzed, using a UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS-based metabolomics approach. In total, 411 metabolites were identified including 8 categories such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, 136 of which were differential metabolites. These differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were mainly enriched in secondary metabolic pathways such as flavone, flavonol, tropane, piperidine, pyridine, isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis and tyrosine metabolism. The metabolomic profiling suggested that the quantity and content of flavonoid compounds accounted for the highest proportion of total metabolites. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed that the marker metabolites of D. officinale from the three provenances were mainly flavonoids, alkaloids and phenolic acids. Correlation analysis identified that 48 differential metabolites showed a significant positive correlation with antioxidant capacity (r ³ 0.8 and p < 0.0092), and flavonoids were the main factors affecting the different antioxidant activities. It is worth noting that quercetin-3-O-sophoroside-7-O-rhamnoside and dihydropinosylvin methyl ether might be the main compounds causing the differences in antioxidant capacity of Yunnan provenance (YN), Zhejiang provenance (ZJ), and Guizhou provenance (GZ). These finding provides valuable information for screening varieties, quality control and product development of D. officinale.

The work shows that volcanic-related elevated continental chemical weathering could have played a significant role in global environmental perturbations during the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction.

In this work, different interlayer remelting strategies are applied to regulate the microstructure evolution, martensitic transformation, and superelastic features of NiTi shape memory alloys prepared using the EBF3 additive manufacturing technique. The NiTi deposits prepared under different remelting beam currents are all composed of the B2 austenite, residual B19′ martensite, and submicron-scale Ti4Ni2Ox precipitates, and exhibit a one-step phase transformation (B2 ↔ B19′). Meanwhile, the crystallographic orientation, grain boundaries, and residual strain of these alloys present a distinct variation with the application of different remelting beam currents. During mechanical testing, the critical stress (σMs) of the EBF3-fabricated NiTi alloys was seen to possess a significant dependence on the martensitic transformation behavior, namely with the amount of B19′ martensite and the corresponding Ms. However, the broadening and stabilization of lamellar martensite created by dislocation pile-ups and plastic deformation in the cyclic loading–unloading procedure is the key reason for the deterioration of the superelastic response of the NiTi deposits. This work confirms that the mechanical and functional performances of NiTi alloys produced via EBF3-technique can be modified upon the application of proper interlayer remelting strategies, which can be extrapolated to the directed energy deposition of shape memory alloys or other metal components.

With the vigorous development of the world’s mineral resources, the global ecological environment has been severely damaged. The tailings cemented filling technology is an important way to realize the green and low-carbon development of the mining industry. However, sulfur-containing tailings from metal mines can destroy the stability and strength of cemented tailings backfill. Therefore, it is imperative to reduce the harm of the sulfur-containing tailings to the strength of cemented tailings backfill. Firstly, based on the research results of sulfur-containing tailings cemented backfill in recent years, this paper reviews the influence of sulfur-containing tailings on the strength of cemented backfill. Accordingly, the mechanism of strength failure of cemented backfill caused by sulfur-containing tailings is further studied, and the erosion failure of sulfide and sulfate is deeply discussed and analyzed. In addition, three control measures are proposed, including adjusting the combination of filling materials and optimizing the filling ratio, controlling the oxidation conditions in the filling process, and adding ad-mixtures as a supplement. Finally, the main conclusions and outlooks of this review are summarized. The purpose of this review is to provide guidance to improve the strength and durability of the cemented sulfur tailings backfill, effectively treating metal tailings, and to propose some ideas for the further improvement and development of the tailings cemented filling technology.

The extant Keteleeria is endemic to east and southeast Asia, while Keteleeria-like trees were widely distributed in the northern hemisphere in Earth’s history. In this paper, we reported a novel wood fossil of Keteleerioxylon changchunense Shi, Sun, Meng et Yu sp. nov., collected from the middle part of the Yingcheng Formation, Yingcheng Coal Mine, Changchun City, Jilin Province, northeast China. The quantitative growth-ring analyses of K. changchunense indicate that it was evergreen with a leaf longevity of 1–3 years, which is consistent with the foliar retention of extant Keteleeria. Its high ring-markedness index (RMI) indicates that the climate seasonality was pronounced during the Early Albian period in the Songliao Basin, northeast China. The fossil records of Keteleeria and closely related taxa indicate that this group might have originated from high latitudes in the northern hemisphere, then spread and migrated southward during the Late Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, gradually decreased in the Cenozoic period, and so far only survives in east and southeast Asia.

The backfilling mining method can effectively solve the environmental and safety problems caused by mining. It is the key technology to realize green mining. Scientific development has accelerated the pace of research on the rational utilization of mine solid waste and improved the research level of backfilling technology. The development history of the backfilling mining method is introduced in the present paper, and it is determined that roof-contacting backfilling is the key technology of mine-solid-waste backfilling mining. This paper introduces three calculation methods of similar roof-contacted backfilling rates. In this paper, the relationship between the characteristics of backfilling slurry made from solid waste from mines and the roof-contacted backfilling rate is systematically analyzed, such as the flow law in stope (gravity gradient), bleeding shrinkage, and natural sedimentation of backfilling slurry. It is pointed out that the characteristics of the stope, such as washing-pipe water, water for the leading way, filling pipeline, and shape of the backfilling stope, are closely related to the roof-contacted backfilling rate. The influential relationship between objective factors, such as human factors, limited auxiliary leveling measures, and backfilling “one-time operation” in the backfilling process, and high-efficiency top filling are considered, and a schematic diagram of the influencing top-filling rate and structure is drawn. At the same time, this paper summarizes the improvement measures of roof connection from three aspects. These include the use of expansive non-shrinkable materials, forced roof-contacted technology, and strengthening management level. It is pointed out that the roof-contacted filling technology is still facing severe challenges, and the research on the backfilling connection technology needs to be strengthened.

In order to reduce the excessive vibration responses of a reinforced concrete frame structure induced by several vibrating screens working simultaneously, field vibration monitoring and some vibration reduction measures are carried out. The results of field vibration monitoring show that the maximum vertical vibration of the structure exceeds 106% of the limitation of building vibration. The results of the structural response analysis show that the excessive structural vibration is attributed to the resonance, as the frequency of the vibrating screens coincides with vertical natural frequency of the floors of the factory structure. Based on this fact, three vibration control measures, including damping, active vibration isolation of vibrating screens and structural vibration absorption, are proposed to mitigate the excessive vibration. In order to analyze the vibration control performance of the proposed schemes, the finite element dynamic model of the factory building structure is established, and the model is verified by the results of vibration and mode tests. Then, the damping system, vibration isolation system and vibration absorption system are set up in the models, and the vibration control performance of the three schemes are investigated. The results show that the measures, including vibration isolation and absorption, can reduce the vibration by more than 80%. Combined with the demand for a short construction period, the active vibration isolation of vibrating screens is finally selected. After the implementation of the scheme, the field monitoring data show that the structural vibration response is consistent with the finite element result and obviously weakened to meet the limitation. This study can provide a reference for the vibration control design for similar screening factory buildings.

The vibration caused by the tunnel blasting and excavation will harm the surrounding rock and lining structure of the adjacent existing tunnels. This paper takes a two-lane large-span highway tunnel as the research object, conducts on-site monitoring tests on the impact of vibration caused by the blasting and excavation of new tunnels on the existing tunnels under different blasting schemes, and analyses in detail the three-dimension vibration velocity by different excavation footages. From the vibration speed, it is concluded that the influence of the existing tunnel of the newly built tunnel blasting team is affected by various factors, such as distance, free surface, charge, and blasthole distribution. With different blasting schemes, the greater the amount of charge, the greater the vibration caused by blasting. Existing tunnels correspond to the front of the tunnel, and the axial and radial vibration peaks are greater than the vertical. Although the cut segment uses a less amount of explosive and has a less blasthole layout, there is only one free surface. Because of the clamping of the rock, it is compared with the other two segments. The vibration caused is the largest. Although the peripheral holes are filled with a large amount of explosive, the arrangement of the blast holes is relatively scattered and there are many free surfaces. Hence, the vibration caused is the smallest. Corresponding to the back of the tunnel face, since there is no rock clamp, the vibration caused by the cut segment is the smallest, and the vibration caused by the peripheral segment and the floor segment is relatively large. The vibration caused by the front explosion side is significantly greater than the vibration caused by the back explosion side. The vibration velocity caused by the unit charge of 1.5 m footage is greater than that of the 3.0 m footage. The vibration velocity caused by the unit charge of the cut segment is the largest, and the vibration velocity caused by the peripheral segment and the floor segment is smaller. The research results provide a reference for the blasting control of similar engineering construction.

The macroscopic aspects of adding basalt fiber (BF) to concrete has been the subject of studies that document great increases in compression strength. Research into the microscopic aspects of the reinforcement mechanism is still in an exploratory stage, and the quantitative analysis and visual observation of fibers in the concrete matrix are difficult. In this paper, the reinforcement effect of fiber on concrete is studied by means of computed tomography (CT) scanning technology and digital image processing (DIP) technology, combined with the macro-mechanical properties obtained from the unconfined compression strength test, and quantitative analysis from the micro point of view. At the same time, the fiber visualization is realized with the help of Avizo. The results show that with the increase in fiber dosage, the peak stress of concrete first increases and then decreases. When the fiber dosage is 3 kg/m3, the peak stress is 44.4 MPa, which is 41.85% higher than that of ordinary concrete. Additionally, the proportion of macropores is the least, which is the best fiber dosage. It is found that when the fiber dosage is 3 kg/m3, the angular distribution of φ is relatively uniform, and the uniform distribution of fibers forms a dense network structure, which significantly increases the peak stress of concrete. However, when the fiber dosage is too high, it will lead to the accumulation of fibers and produce macropores, and these excess fibers mainly appear in the horizontal direction and do not contribute to the compression strength.

The tailing paste thickening technology was investigated to achieve goaf reduction treatment and tailing resource utilization of metal mines and reach the effect of controlling two hazards with one waste. However, superfine tailing particles could easily form suspended water-locking flocs in the thickening process, which seriously affected the increase in the underflow concentration in the thickener. Undisturbed compression-stage bed samples were extracted using an in situ sampling method through a continuous dynamic thickening experiment. Then, the morphologies and geometrical structures of micropores were analyzed through high-precision computed tomography scanning. Subsequently, the influences of the shear evolution of pore structure and seepage channel on the dewaterability of underflow slurry were explored by combining Avizo software and 3D reconstruction technology. The thickening and dewatering mechanism of underflow slurry was also revealed. Results showed that under the shear action, the flocs were deformed and compacted, forming a high-concentration underflow. On this basis, the original micropores were extruded, deformed and segmented. Moreover, many loose micropores were formed, the connectivity became poor and the total porosity declined. The diameter of the water-conducting channel in the sample was enlarged because of the shear force and the seepage effect improved. The maximum flow velocity inside the pores was 1.537 μm/s, which was 5.49% higher than that under the non-shear state.

A facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis approach was proposed to prepare nitrogen and chlorine co-doped carbon dots (CDs) using l-ornithine hydrochloride as the sole precursor. The configuration and component of CDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The obtained CDs (Orn-CDs) with a mean diameter of 2.1 nm were well monodispersed in aqueous solutions. The as-prepared CDs exhibited a bright blue fluorescence with a high yield of 60%, good photostability and low cytotoxicity. The emission of Orn-CDs could be selectively and effectively suppressed by Fe3+. Thus, a quantitative assay of Fe3+ was realized by this nanoprobe with a detection limit of 95.6 nmol l−1 in the range of 0.3–50 µmol l−1. Furthermore, ascorbic acid could recover the fluorescence of Orn-CDs suppressed by Fe3+, owing to the transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by ascorbic acid. The limit of detection for ascorbic acid was 137 nmol l−1 in the range of 0.5–10 µmol l−1. In addition, the established method was successfully applied for Fe3+ and ascorbic acid sensing in human serum and urine specimens and for imaging of Fe3+ in living cells. Orn-CD-based sensing platform showed its potential to be used for biomedicine-related study because it is cost-effective, easily scalable and can be used without additional functionalization and sample pre-treatment.

Various amounts of methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were explored to be incorporated into novel nano SiO2 dental resin composites using light curing method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nanoindentation, nanoscratch and three-point flexure tests were performed. The volumetric shrinkage and mechanical properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, resistance, flexural strength and fracture energy were analyzed. With the additions of POSS, the volume shrinkage decreased and the mechanical properties initially increased. The effects of POSS on these properties were studied to provide a reference for clinically selecting a composite resin with excellent properties.

In order to investigate the water inrush mechanism in completely weathered granite, a large-scale triaxial testing system is designed and manufactured, which can induce the mass transfer and monitor the flow properties. Using this system, the effects of water pressure and initial porosity on the mass transfer and flow properties were determined, and the relative critical conditions for water inrush were proposed. The results indicate that (1) the particle transfer could cause an increase in porosity, permeability, and water inflow, which is the essential reason for water inrush in completely weathered granite. (2) Due to the effect of particle transfer, the flow properties may change from a Darcy to a non-Darcy flow, which is a key signal for water inrush. (3) With the increase of water pressure, the mass transfer, permeability, and water inflow increased gradually, and a critical value (p=0.6 MPa) that caused the water inrush was obtained. Furthermore, with the decrease of initial porosity, the mass transfer and flow properties were suppressed rapidly, and a critical porosity (0.23) to anti-inrush was observed. The results obtained can provide an important reference for understanding the mechanism, forecasting the risk, and taking the effective control measures for water inrush.

During May-August 2013, a malaria outbreak comprising 874 persons in Shanglin County, China, was detected among 4,052 persons returning from overseas. Ghana was the predominant destination country, and 92.3% of malarial infections occurred in gold miners. Preventive measures should be enhanced for persons in high-risk occupations traveling to malaria-endemic countries.

In this paper, the effect of cold deformation on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 316LN austenitic stainless steel (ASS) was investigated. The results indicated that the content of martensite increased as the cold rolling reduction also increased. Meanwhile, the density of the grain boundary in the untransformed austenite structure of CR samples increased as the cold reduction increased from 10% to 40%, leading to a decreased size of the untransformed austenite structure. These two factors contribute to the improvement of strength and the decrease of ductility. High yield strengths (780–968 MPa) with reasonable elongations (30.8–27.4%) were achieved through 20–30% cold rolling. The 10–30% cold-rolled (CR) samples with good ductility had a good strain hardening ability, exhibiting a three-stage strain hardening behavior.

Fundamental understanding of micro-mechanical behaviors in bitumen, including phase separation, micro-friction, micro-abrasion, etc., can help the pavement engineers better understand the bitumen mechanical performances at macroscale. Recent researches show that the microstructure evolution in bitumen will directly affect its surface structure and micro-mechanical performance. In this study, the bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behaviors are studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments, Phase Dynamics Theory and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation. The AFM experiment results show that different phase-structure will occur at the surface of the bitumen samples under certain thermodynamic conditions at microscale. The phenomenon can be explained using the phase dynamics theory, where the effects of stability parameter and temperature on bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behavior are studied combined with MD Simulation. Simulation results show that the saturates phase, in contrast to the naphthene aromatics phase, plays a major role in bitumen micro-mechanical behavior. A high stress zone occurs at the interface between the saturates phase and the naphthene aromatics phase, which may form discontinuities that further affect the bitumen frictional performance.
