Metacognition plays an important role in the development of young children. Recent studies have found that metacognition and executive function are independent but closely related. In this study, 55 children aged 4-5 years were selected as subjects, and a short-term longitudinal design was used to analyze the relationships among metacognition, executive functions, early mathematical skills and early language skills. The results showed that metacognitive skills could predict executive functions after 5 months, and metacognition and executive functions could predict early mathematical skills and early language skills. Working memory played a fully mediating role in the prediction of metacognitive monitoring of early language skills. That is, early metacognitive performance could promote the development of executive functions, which could explain the mechanism in the prediction of metacognition in early language skills. These findings are the development and supplementation of existing empirical and theoretical studies and inspire the development of preschool education activities.

Research Findings: Promoting inhibitory control in preschoolers could increase the likelihood of positive developmental trajectories. Nevertheless, to date only a limited number of studies have focused on inhibitory control training, reporting mixed results. To examine the efficacy and the transfer effects of the training on preschoolers, seven group games based on body movement were developed and administered across 15 sessions of 30 minutes each at preschool three times a week for over five weeks. Fifty-one children aged four to five years were randomly assigned to either a control group consisting of 14 girls and 13 boys (M[subscript age] = 4.58; S.D. = 0.32) or a training group with 13 girls and 11 boys (M[subscript age] = 4.60; S.D. = 0.30). The training group had four subgroups consisting of six children each. The pretests and delayed posttests examined executive functions and pre-academic skills while immediate posttests examined only executive functions. There was three months interval between immediate and delayed posttests. Improvements in inhibitory control, other executive functions, and mathematical cognition in the experimental group were greater than those in the control group. Practice or Policy: This design of group games for inhibitory control in preschoolers is effective and it can be improved by expanding game categories and enhancing training environment.

Abstract Background Impaired T cell immune function exists in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Dialysis treatment may lead to changes in T cell subsets. In the present study, we aimed to identify alterations of T cell phenotypes in ESRD patients, especially in those receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD), and analyze the potential associated factors. Methods In the present study, 110 PD patients and 110 age/gender-matched hemodialysis (HD) patients who met the inclusion criteria were studied. Pre-dialysis blood samples were obtained and analyzed by flow cytometry to detect the expression of CD45RO and CCR7. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to determine the factors associated with the alteration of T cell phenotypes. Results In all dialysis patients, age was associated with the frequencies of both CD4+ and CD8+ naïve T cells, effector memory (EM) T cells and effector memory RA (EMRA) T cells but not central memory (CM) T cells. Dialysis modality was also associated with T cell subsets. Compared with HD patients, PD patients showed an increase in both CD4+ and CD8+ CM T cells and a reduction in both CD4+ and CD8+ EM and EMRA T cells. However, the number of CD4+ naïve T cells was lower and the number of CD8+ naïve T cells was higher in PD patients than those in HD patients. In PD patients, further multivariate analysis revealed that the frequency of CD4+ naïve T cells was positively associated with nPCR, while the frequency of CD8+ naïve T cells was negatively associated with age. Conclusion In dialysis patients, the dialysis modality and age influence T cell subsets. There is a progression from naïve to effector T cells in HD patients compared with PD patients. In PD patients, different factors may influence the frequencies of CD4+ and CD8+ naïve T cells.

Introduction: The immune senescence marked by the inflation of memory T cell is established in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with peritoneal dialysis (PD). These patients suffer high incidence of infectious disease, which has been relevant to immune dysfunction. However the association of immune senescence with infection in PD patients is not clear. This prospective study aimed to investigate the relationship between proportion of T cell subsets and infection event in patients on PD. Methods: We enrolled patients on PD >6 months from January 1, 2016 to December 30, 2016 and followed them until April 30, 2020. Baseline T cell subsets from blood were collected at the time of recruitment. The primary end point was infection event including peritonitis, exit site infection, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and other infection. Results: There were 94 patients (46 male) with a mean age of 56.1 ± 14.9 years old enrolled during the follow-up period, and 26 patients suffered infection events. A higher proportion of effector memory (EM) CD8+ T cells was found in patients with infection than in those without infection. There was no difference in the distribution of EM CD8+ T cells between PD-related and non-dialysis infection. Increased level of EM CD8+ T cells was risk factor for first infection event in PD patients. Conclusion: High level of EM CD8+ T cells could be a significant predictor of infection event in patients on PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Podocyte injury is associated with albuminuria and the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN). NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) is the main source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the kidney and NOX4 is up‐regulated in podocytes in response to high glucose. In the present study, the effects of Salvianolate on DN and its underlying mechanisms were investigated in diabetic db/db mice and human podocytes. We confirmed that the Salvianolate administration exhibited similar beneficial effects as the NOX1/NOX4 inhibitor GKT137831 treated diabetic mice, as reflected by attenuated albuminuria, reduced podocyte loss and mesangial matrix accumulation. We further observed that Salvianolate attenuated the increase of Nox4 protein, NOX4‐based NADPH oxidase activity and restored podocyte loss in the diabetic kidney. In human podocytes, NOX4 was predominantly localized to mitochondria and Sal B treatment blocked HG‐induced mitochondrial NOX4 derived superoxide generation and thereby ameliorating podocyte apoptosis, which can be abrogated by AMPK knockdown. Therefore, our results suggest that Sal B possesses the reno‐protective capabilities in part through AMPK‐mediated control of NOX4 expression. Taken together, our results identify that Salvianolate could prevent glucose‐induced oxidative podocyte injury through modulation of NOX4 activity in DN and have a novel therapeutic potential for DN.
