PurposeThis paper aims to assess the effects of the Chinese cultural element in the brand logo (CCEBL)-product function congruence and CCEBL-brand image congruence on consumer-brand identification and subsequent purchase intention. The authors also explore the moderating role of cultural element authenticity in the process of consumer-brand identification formation.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was conducted in China between January and February 2021. A total of 340 valid responses were collected and analyzed. A bootstrap method was employed to verify the hypotheses.FindingsCCEBL-product function congruence and CCEBL-brand image congruence significantly improve consumers' purchase intentions, and the effects vary among product categories. Consumer-brand identification mediates these relationships. Finally, the relationships between CCEBL-product function congruence, CCEBL-brand image congruence, and consumer-brand identification are moderated by cultural element authenticity.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies to investigate how local cultural elements in brand logos affect purchase intentions in the context of ethnocentrism. Additionally, this study advances the understanding of brand logo design by explaining and comparing the differences in the effectiveness of local cultural elements in brand logos among utilitarian and hedonic products. Additionally, this study links authenticity to cultural marketing and thus contributes to the literature.

A tandem benzyne C-C σ-bond insertion reaction and photo-Nazarov cyclization protocol was developed, leading to the formation of three C-C bonds at consecutive positions of a benzene ring with concomitant assembly of a 6-5-6 tricyclic ring system. When 3-silylbenzyne precursors were employed, a tandem process involving a benzyne C-C σ-bond insertion, a photo-Nazarov cyclization, and a 1,3-silyl group migration was observed, which could produce 1,2,3,5-tetrasubstituted benzenes.

PurposeThis study aims to assess the impact of functional green advertising receptivity and emotional green advertising receptivity on consumers' green purchase intention. The authors then examine the mediating role of perceived competence and perceived warmth. Furthermore, the authors explore the moderating effect of power distance belief (PDB) on the relationships between green advertising receptivity with different appeals and consumers' perceived competence and perceived warmth respectively.Design/methodology/approachBased on the online survey platform, a total of 468 responses were obtained in China from January to March 2022. 408 valid replies were collected and analyzed in this study. The research hypotheses were empirically verified with bootstrap approach.FindingsThe empirical results indicate that both functional green advertisi\ng receptivity and emotional green advertising receptivity are significantly positively correlated with green purchase intention, and perceived competence and perceived warmth play the mediating role. Besides, PDB significantly strengthens the relationship between functional green advertising receptivity and perceived competence, but weakens the incentive effect of emotional green advertising receptivity on perceived warmth.Originality/valueThe psychological mechanism of the receptivity of green advertising with different appeals affecting green purchase intention remains unclear. This is one of the first studies to uncover how functional green advertising receptivity and emotional green advertising receptivity influence green purchase intention. Besides, the impact of PDB on the formation process of consumer perception is also a black box. By clarifying and comparing the moderating role of PDB on the relationships between advertising receptivity with different appeals and consumers' perceived competence and perceived warmth, this study contributes to the research on the effectiveness of green advertising.

PurposeFor survival and prosperity, enterprises must pursue exploitative and exploratory innovations simultaneously. To accelerate technological breakthroughs in the wind power industry, the Chinese Government has promulgated several support programs from the demand and supply sides. This study assesses the impact of different categories of innovation policies on exploitative and exploratory innovation. As women also play an increasingly important role in corporate governance, the authors also elucidate the moderating role of female executives in these relationships.Design/methodology/approachBased on micro-data of 119 listed Chinese wind power firms during 2006–2020, this study provides a theoretical model and tests the hypotheses.FindingsBoth demand-side and supply-side innovation policies significantly facilitate exploitative and exploratory innovations of in the Chinese wind power industry. Furthermore, female executives enhance the effects of these policies on exploitative innovation but negatively moderate their effects on exploratory innovation.Originality/valueInnovation is generally considered homogeneous. This is one of the first studies to evaluate the impact of different categories of innovation policies on exploitative and exploratory innovations. In addition, although the increasingly important role of women in corporate governance is acknowledged, whether and how female executives affect the effectiveness of innovation policies has not been fully explored. This study advances the understanding of the potential impact of female executives on innovation policy effectiveness.

Sulfoxides are important organic synthons that have been used in a variety of transformations. The technological innovation of wind power is crucial to energy security and energy structure transformation. The Chinese government has been committed to improving the innovation of the wind power industry for decades. Although academic researchers and wind power policymakers have been widely concerned about the absolute score of innovation output, concentrating on innovation output in isolation is ultimately insufficient. This article goes beyond bean counting and evaluates the innovation of the Chinese wind power industry from the perspective of relative efficiency, and then assesses the efforts of the government to improve innovation efficiency (IE). The study uses the data of 105 wind power listed enterprises in China over the period 2008–2019. According to the recommendation made by the existing papers, IE is defined as the capability to generate innovation outputs per unit of R&D investment. Regression analysis is applied to test the policy effect. During 2008–2019, the average value of IE of Chinese wind power industry is 0.196. The IE of wind power enterprises in eastern China (0.265) is higher than that in central and western China (0.169). Besides, the regression results indicate that all categories of wind power innovation policies contribute to the IE of wind power industry in China. Furthermore, the innovation policies issued by the departments of the State Council significantly improve the IE of wind power industry, but the innovation policies from the National People’s Congress and the State Council have no significant impacts on IE.

Both aryne 1,4-disubstitution and 1,2,4-trifunctionalization were accomplished from tertiary amines bearing a penta-2,4-dien-1-yl moiety. These transformations could directly incorporate a C-N and a C-C bond para to each other on an aryne intermediate via a sequential nucleophilic addition and [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement. When arynes bearing 3-tethered electrophiles were employed, a cascade regioselective nucleophilic addition, intramolecular cyclization, and remote diastereoselective [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement process was observed. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that hydrogen-bonding interactions between two C-H hydrogens on the penta-2,4-dien-1-yl chain and the oxygen anion generated upon N-nucleophilic annulation reaction in the [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement step is responsible for the remote diastereoselective control in this reaction system.

A benzyne-mediated esterification of carboxylic acids and alcohols under mild conditions has been realized, which is made possible via a selective nucleophilic addition of carboxylic acid to benzyne in the presence of alcohol. After a subsequent transesterification with alcohol, the corresponding esters can be produced efficiently. This benzyne-mediated protocol can be used on the modification of Ibuprofen, cholesterol, estradiol, and synthesis of nandrolone phenylpropionate. In addition, benzyne can also be used to promote lactonization and amidation reaction.

Arynes are among the most active organic intermediates and have found numerous applications in expeditious preparation of substituted arenes. In the past 20 years, chemists have witnessed a resurgence in aryne chemistry, which is mainly attributed by the extensive utilization of Kobayashi's method, a fluoride-induced removal of the TMS group with concomitant departure of its ortho OTf group on o-silylaryl triflates. Nowadays, o-silylaryl triflates are the most frequently employed aryne precursors. This review provides an overview of the history of Kobayashi's method, its methodological achievements, and its applications in the synthesis of natural products, bioactive molecules, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The stannum-ene reactions of both benzyne and cyclohexyne were realized, which is particularly suitable for cyclohexyne with a broad substrate scope and excellent chemoselectivity. Our DFT calculations via distortion/interaction analysis revealed that both stannum- and hydrogen-ene reactions with cyclohexyne have later transition states due to their higher distortion energies in the transition states than those in benzyne reactions, which lead to enhanced Pauli repulsion as the decisive factor in the interaction energy accompanied with enlarged energy gap between two types of ene reactions. Therefore, excellent chemoselectivity was disclosed in the cyclohexyne-ene reaction.

In this study, we built a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) receiver based underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The bit error rate (BER) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of UWOC with different distances and data transmission rates were obtained. Based on the water attenuation coefficient of 0.12 m-1, a series of neutral density (ND) filters were exploited to attenuate the light output power from the blue laser diode (LD) to simulate the long distance UWOC. The maximum estimated distances of 144 m and 117 m with corresponding BERs of 1.89 × 10-3 and 5.31 × 10-4 at data transmission rates of 500 bps and 2 Mbps were acquired in UWOC system using on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme, respectively. Furthermore, we compared the differences between free-space and underwater channels, and a divergence angle of ~1.02 mrad was measured experimentally at a distance of 50 m in the free space. The long UWOC distances obtained in this study partly benefit from high sensitivity SPAD, the small laser divergence angle and low light attenuation. This study provides an approach to achieve long distance UWOC using SPAD.

Climate classification aims to divide a given region into distinct groups on the basis of meteorological variables, and it has important applications in fields such as agriculture and buildings. In this paper, we propose a novel spectral clustering–based method to partition 661 meteorological stations in China into several zones. First, the correlations are analyzed among five meteorological variables: daily average temperature, average relative humidity, sunshine hours, diurnal temperature range, and atmospheric pressure. The resulting weak linear correlation supports the classification under multiple views. Next, a similarity matrix/graph is constructed by combining the advantages of k-nearest-neighbor and sparse subspace representation. The blocking effect of the similarity matrix confirms the rationality of the classification. Then, we consider respectively the climate classification under a single view and multiple views. For the single view, atmospheric pressure has the highest imbalance degree, and sunshine hours and diurnal temperature range have the strongest classification consistency. The consistency rates are improved evidently in a multiple-view situation. Afterward, we propose a determining method for the number of clusters and make a sensitivity analysis on various parameters. Finally, we provide a further statistical analysis on the classification results and compare the consistency with another climate dataset. All experimental results show that the proposed classification method is feasible and effective in the climate zoning of China.

A convenient and efficient domino aryne process was developed under transition-metal-free conditions to generate a range of tetra- and pentacyclic ring systems. This transformation was realized via a 1,2-benzdiyne through a nucleophilic and Diels-Alder reaction cascade using styrene as the diene moiety. Three new chemical bonds, namely one C-N and two C-C bonds, and two benzofused rings could be constructed concomitantly, which was made possible by distinct chemoselective control at both the 1,2-aryne and 2,3-aryne stages. Moreover, in-depth studies were carried out on the domino aryne precursors and controlling the diastereoselectivity.

Reliable and effective techniques for removing contaminants from soil are highly desirable. However, metolachlor residue bioremediation and soil fertility improvement by Rhodospirillum rubrum (R. rubrum) in effluent after wastewater treatment have not yet been investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate the feasibility of bioremediation of metolachlor residues in soil and soil fertility improvement by R. rubrum in effluent and to explain the mechanism that R. rubrum in effluent was induced to express the regulatory gene. Soybean processing wastewater was obtained from Harbin Soybean Products Machining Factory. Soil samples were the surface soil (0–30 cm) from campus (1.77 g/kg total N, 4.15 g/kg total P, 1.58 g/kg total K, 17 g/kg SOM, 0.07 g/kg SMBC). Cytochrome P450 monooxygenase regulatory gene, MAPKKKs gene, was measured by RT-PCR. Compared to control treatment, metolachlor was removed efficiently and soil fertility was remediated by effluent containing R. rubrum. The removal in concentrations reached 2.97 mg/L (99%). Soil organic matter (SOM) and SMBC were enhanced 42 times. Molecular analysis revealed that metolachlor induced cpm gene expression to synthesize cytochrome P450 monooxygenase through activating MAPKKKs gene in MAPK signal transduction pathway. Bioremediation of metolachlor in soil and improvement of soil fertility using R. rubrum in effluent were feasible. Metolachlor, as environmental pressure, induced cpm gene expression to synthesize cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and to remove metolachlor through activating MAPKKKs, MAPKKs, MAPKs genes in MAPK signal transduction pathway.

Wind power has been treated as a strategic choice to decarbonize the Chinese electricity market, so the Chinese government has introduced various policies to improve the wind power industry's total factor productivity (TFP). However, the impacts of policies and their mixes on TFP are still unclear. In addition, the Chinese wind power industry is supervised and regulated by several agencies, so assessing and comparing the effectiveness of policies from different agencies is also an urgent task. This study evaluates the impacts of different categories of policies and their mixes on the TFP of the Chinese wind power industry based on micro-data from the listed Chinese wind power enterprises from 2006 to 2020. The heterogeneity in policy effectiveness is probed with respect to the policy-issuing agencies. The empirical results indicate that economic, regulatory, and soft policies and their mixes significantly facilitate the TFP. Further analysis suggests that the policies of the National People's Congress and the State Council have no significant effect, while the policies of the State Council's departments can significantly improve the TFP of the wind power industry in China.
