Objective To investigate the correlation between magnetic resonance imaging-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score and screw loosening after dynamic pedicle screw fixation with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) rods, and evaluate its predictive value. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the patients who underwent dynamic pedicle screw fixation with PEEK rods from March 2017 to June 2022. Data on age, sex, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia history, long-term smoking, alcohol consumption, VBQ score, L1–4 average Hounsfield unit (HU) value, surgical fixation length, and the lowest instrumented vertebra were collected. Logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the relationship between VBQ score and pedicle screw loosening (PSL). Results A total of 24 patients experienced PSL after surgery (20.5%). PSL group and non-PSL group showed statistical differences in age, number of fixed segments, fixation to the sacrum, L1–4 average HU value, and VBQ score (p < 0.05). The VBQ score in the PSL group was higher than that in the non-PSL group (3.56 ± 0.45 vs. 2.77 ± 0.31, p < 0.001). In logistic regression analysis, VBQ score (odds ratio, 3.425; 95% confidence interval, 1.552–8.279) were identified as independent risk factors for screw loosening. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for VBQ score predicting PSL was 0.819 (p < 0.05), with the optimal threshold of 3.15 (sensitivity, 83.1%; specificity, 80.5%). Conclusion The VBQ score can independently predict postoperative screw loosening in patients undergoing lumbar dynamic pedicle screw fixation with PEEK rods, and its predictive value is comparable to HU value.

Abstract Background The prognosis of SCLC is poor and difficult to predict. The aim of this study was to explore whether a model based on radiomics and clinical features could predict the prognosis of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). Methods Simulated positioning CT images and clinical features were retrospectively collected from 200 patients with histological diagnosis of LS-SCLC admitted between 2013 and 2021, which were randomly divided into the training (n = 140) and testing (n = 60) groups. Radiomics features were extracted from simulated positioning CT images, and the t-test and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were used to screen radiomics features. We then constructed radiomic score (RadScore) based on the filtered radiomics features. Clinical factors were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. The Cox proportional hazards model was used for further analyses of possible prognostic features and clinical factors to build three models including a radiomic model, a clinical model, and a combined model including clinical factors and RadScore. When a model has prognostic predictive value (AUC > 0.7) in both train and test groups, a nomogram will be created. The performance of three models was evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and Kaplan–Meier analysis. Results A total of 1037 features were extracted from simulated positioning CT images which were contrast enhanced CT of the chest. The combined model showed the best prediction, with very poor AUC for the radiomic model and the clinical model. The combined model of OS included 4 clinical features and RadScore, with AUCs of 0.71 and 0.70 in the training and test groups. The combined model of PFS included 4 clinical features and RadScore, with AUCs of 0.72 and 0.71 in the training and test groups. T stages, ProGRP and smoke status were the independent variables for OS in the combined model, whereas T stages, ProGRP and prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) were the independent factors for PFS. Abstract Background Runt-related transcription factor-1 (RUNX1), a key member of the core-binding factor family of transcription factors, has emerged as a novel therapeutic target for cardiovascular disease. There is an urgent need to fully understand the expression pattern of Runx1 in the heart and the mechanisms by which it is controlled under normal conditions and in response to disease. The expression of Runx1 is regulated at the transcriptional level by two promoters designated P1 and P2. Alternative usage of these two promoters creates differential mRNA transcripts diversified in distribution and translational potential. While the significance of P1/P2 promoter-switch in the transcriptional control of Runx1 has been highlighted in the embryogenic process, very little is known about the level of P1- and P2-specific transcripts in adult hearts, and the underlying mechanisms controlling the promoter-switch. Methods To amplify P1/P2 specific sequences in the heart, we used two different sense primers complementary to either P1 or P2 5'-regions to monitor the expression of P1/P2 transcripts. DNA methylation levels were assessed at the Runx1 promoter regions. Rats were grouped by age. Results The expression levels of both P1- and P2-derived Runx1 transcripts were decreased in older rats when compared with that in young adults, paralleled with an age-dependent decline in Runx1 protein level. Furthermore, older rats demonstrated a higher degree of DNA methylation at Runx1 promoter regions. Alternative promoter usage was observed in hearts with increased age, as reflected by altered P1:P2 mRNA ratio. Conclusion Our data demonstrate that the expression of Runx1 in the heart is age-dependent and underscore the importance of gene methylation in the promoter-mediated transcriptional control of Runx1, thereby providing new insights to the role of epigenetic regulation in the heart.

Abstract Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) technology converts heat into electricity using thermal radiation. Increasing operating temperature is a highly effective approach to improving the efficiency of TPV systems. However, most reported TPV selective emitters degrade rapidly via. oxidation as operating temperatures increase. To address this issue, replacing nanostructured oxide‐metal films with oxide–oxide films is a promising way to greatly limit oxidation, even under high‐temperature conditions. This study introduces new all‐oxide photonic crystal designs for high‐temperature stable TPV systems, overcoming limitations of metal phases and offering promising material choices. The designs utilize both yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/MgO and CeO2/MgO combinations with a multilayer structure and stable high‐quality growth. Both designsexhibit positive optical dielectric constants with tunable reflectivity, measured via optical characterization. Thermal stability testing using in situ heating X‐ray diffraction (XRD) suggests high‐temperature stability (up to 1000 °C) of both YSZ/MgO and CeO2/MgO systems. The results demonstrate a new and promising approach to improve the high‐temperature stability of TPV systems, which can be extended to a wide range of material selection and potential designs.

Objective: To assess the clinical outcomes and toxicities of once daily (QD) simultaneous dose reduction intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SDR-IMRT-QD; SDR-QD) versus conventional QD IMRT (C-QD) and twice daily (BID) IMRT in patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). Methods: After propensity score matching (PSM), a retrospective analysis involving 300 patients with LS-SCLC treated using SDR-QD, C-QD, or BID was performed from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019. The prescribed irradiation dose in the SDR-QD cohort was 60 Gy/PGTV and 54 Gy/PTV QD. The radiation dose was 60 Gy for both PGTV and PTV QD in the C-QD cohort. The radiation dose was 45 Gy for both PGTV and PTV in the BID cohort. Toxicities, short-term effects, and survival outcomes were recorded. A meta-analysis on the protective effects of pharmaceuticals for cardiac toxicities induced by anti-tumor therapy was performed. Results: The median overall survival time (MST) in the 3 cohorts were 32.7 months (SDR-QD), 26.3 months (C-QD), and 33.6 months (BID); the differences between groups were statistically significant. Lower toxicities and doses to organs-at-risk (OARs) occurred in the SDR-QD and BID cohorts. Further, the cardiac dose dosimetric parameter Vheart40 was negatively associated with survival (r = −0.35, P = 0.007). A Vheart40 value of 16.5% was recommended as a cut-off point, which yielded 54.7% sensitivity and 85.7% specificity for predicting negative survival outcomes. The meta-analysis indicated that pharmaceuticals significantly reduced the cardiac toxicities induced by chemotherapy, but not radiotherapy. Conclusions: SDR-QD was shown to have similar toxicities and survival compared with BID, but fewer toxicities and better survival than C-QD. In addition, cardiac dose exposure was negatively associated with survival. Thus, 16.5% of the cardiac dosimetric parameter Vheart40 is recommended as the cut-off point, and a Vheart40 > 16.5% predicts poor survival.

As a member of the insulin-like growth factor mRNA binding proteins (IGFBPs) family, IGF2BP3 plays important role in skeletal muscle development by regulating IGF2, which has been considered a key gene related to growth and reproductive traits in many agricultural animal species. However, study on the goose IGF2BP3 gene is still scarce. In this study, the full-length cDNA sequence of goose IGF2BP3 gene was cloned and characterized. The goose IGF2BP3 cDNA is 1825 bp in length, containing an open reading frame (ORF) of 1755 bp that encodes a protein of 584 amino acids, which consists of two RNA-recognition motifs (RRMs) and four K-homologous (KH) domains. RT-qPCR analysis indicates that the IGF2BP3 mRNA expression level is the highest in ovary tissue, followed in hypothalamus, spleen, leg muscle and liver, and low level in breast muscle and muscular stomach of the adult Zhedong White goose. Meanwhile, 25 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 5 insertions/deletions (InDels) variants were identified in about 10,764 bp of goose IGF2BP3 genomic DNA sequence. These results serve as a foundation for further investigations of the function of IGF2BP3 gene in geese.

The gut microbiome’s imbalance has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), yet the contribution of the gut mycobiome remains largely unclear. This study delineates the gut mycobiome profile in PAH and examines its interplay with the bacterial microbiome alterations. Fecal samples from monocrotaline-induced PAH rats and matched controls were subjected to internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequencing for fungal community assessment and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing for bacterial community characterization. Comparative analysis revealed no significant disparities in the overall mycobiome diversity between the PAH and control groups. However, taxonomic profiling identified differential mycobiome compositions, with the PAH group exhibiting a significant enrichment of genera such as Wallemia, unidentified_Branch02, Postia, Malassezia, Epicoccum, Cercospora, and Alternaria. Conversely, genera Xeromyces, unidentified_Plectosphaerellaceae, and Monilia were more abundant in the controls. Correlations of Malassezia and Wallemia abundance with hemodynamic parameters were observed. Indications of bidirectional fungal–bacterial community interactions were also noted. This investigation reveals distinct gut mycobiome alterations in PAH, which are intricately associated with concurrent bacterial microbiome changes, suggesting a possible contributory role of gut fungi in PAH pathophysiology. These findings underscore the potential for novel gut mycobiome-targeted therapeutic interventions in PAH management.

ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films have been previously reported as hybrid metamaterials with unique optical properties such as plasmonic resonance properties and hyperbolic behaviors. In this study, Au composition in the ZnO-Au nanocomposites has been effectively tuned by target composition variation and thus resulted in microstructure and optical property tuning. Specifically, all the ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films grown through the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method show obvious vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) structure with the Au nanopillars embedded in the ZnO matrix. Moreover, the average diameter of Au nanopillars increases as Au concentration increases, which also leads to the redshifts in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength and changes in the hyperbolic behaviors of the films. As a whole, this work discusses how strain-driven tuning of optical properties and microstructure resulted through a novel Au concentration variation approach which has not been previously attempted in the ZnO-Au thin film system. These highly ordered films present great promise in the areas of sensing, waveguides, and nanophotonics to name a few.

An Mw 6.8 earthquake occurred in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on 5 September 2022. This seismic event triggered numerous coseismic geohazards in the seismic zone. In this study, the ascending- and descending-track synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images observed by the Sentinel-1A satellite are utilized to extract the coseismic surface deformation of the Luding earthquake. Subsequently, a faulting model is estimated based on the elastic dislocation theory, under the constraint of the InSAR observation. Additionally, the POT technique was employed to detect coseismic geohazards. High-spatial-resolution optical remote sensing images served to validate the reliability of the detection results. The coseismic interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation field indicated a maximum deformation of ~190 mm and ~140 mm along the ascending and descending tracks, respectively. The estimated best-fitting faulting model suggests that the optimal seismogenic fault strike and dip angles are 169.3° and 70°, respectively. The fault slip predominantly exhibits left-lateral strike-slip characteristics and is concentrated at depths of 3–12 km. The estimated maximum fault slip was 2.67 m, occurring at a depth of 7 km. The pixel offset tracking (POT) result derived from the pre- and post-earthquake SAR images found a total of 245 medium- to large-scale coseismic geohazards, with a verification rate from optical images exceeding 64%. The distribution of these geohazards is notably dense within the significant fault rupture segment. Geohazards on the fault hanging wall are densely packed, whereas landslides along the Dadu River’s fault footwall are also notably frequent.

Abstract Metamaterials have gained great research interest in recent years owing to their potential for property tunability, multifunctionality, and property coupling. As a new group of self‐assembled thin films, vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN)‐based hybrid metamaterials have been demonstrated with significant anisotropic physical properties and a broad range of property tailorability, such as optical anisotropy, magnetic anisotropy, hyperbolic dispersion, and enhanced second harmonic generation properties. Herein, self‐assembled ZrO2‐Co nanocomposite films, with high epitaxial quality and ultra‐fine vertically aligned Co nanopillars (with an average diameter of ≈2 nm) embedded in a ZrO2 matrix, are fabricated using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The Co pillar density can be effectively tuned by varying the Co concentration in the target, which results in tunable optical properties and magnetic properties. Specifically, a high saturation magnetization of 100 emu cm−3, strong out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy and tailorable magnetization properties are achieved via tuning the Co nanopillar density. Coupled with hyperbolic dispersion of dielectric constant from 950 to 1500 nm in wavelength, plasmonic Co metal nanopillars, and the unique dielectric ZrO2 matrix, this new nanoscale hybrid metamaterial shows great potential for future integrated optical and magnetic device designs.

Polarization three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology has received extensive attention in recent years because of its advantages of high accuracy, long detection distance, simplicity, and low cost. The ambiguity in the normal obtained by the polarization characteristics of the target’s specular or diffuse reflected light limits the development of polarization 3D imaging technology. Over the past few decades, many shape from polarization techniques have been proposed to address the ambiguity issues, i.e., high-precision normal acquisition. Meanwhile, some polarization 3D imaging techniques attempt to extend experimental objects to complex specific targets and scenarios through a learning-based approach. Additionally, other problems and related solutions in polarization 3D imaging technology are also investigated. In this paper, the fundamental principles behind these technologies will be elucidated, experimental results will be presented to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of these popular technologies, and finally, our perspectives on the remaining challenges of the polarization 3D imaging technology will be presented.

As China works to move away from coal in its energy system as a critical strategy to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, there are several challenges which will affect the coal transition. One challenge that has not been fully explored is the impact on coal employment. There are millions of people employed in various sectors along the coal supply chain, including mining, processing, transport, and power generation. In this study, we developed a framework to understand the magnitude and characteristics of the employment challenges associated with the coal transition across provinces. Specifically, the magnitude and characteristics of the challenges are evaluated from multiple dimensions, including existing coal sector employment, coal production, coal consumption, GDP contribution from the coal industry, and coal mining productivity, to explore how the transition of the coal industry will likely affect different provinces. The results showed that provinces with large total coal employment today are often those with high coal production and consumption, high GDP contribution from the coal industry, and low productivity of coal mining. We found that employment impacts of a coal transition will not be equally distributed in China, as both the magnitude and characteristics of the employment challenges vary substantially across all provinces. It is therefore important to develop a tailored strategy to tackle specific needs for each province.

Abstract. Hypertension is the leading risk factor for global mortality and morbidity and those with hypertension are more likely to develop severe symptoms in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system, which is closely related to abnormal renin-angiotensin system and elabela/apelin-apelin receptor (APJ) axis. The elabela/apelin-APJ axis exerts essential roles in regulating blood pressure levels, vascular tone, and cardiovascular dysfunction in hypertension by counterbalancing the action of the angiotensin II/angiotensin II type 1 receptor axis and enhancing the endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase/NO signaling. Furthermore, the elabela/apelin-APJ axis demonstrates beneficial effects in cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, including angiogenesis, cellular proliferation, fibrosis, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular remodeling and dysfunction during hypertension. More importantly, effects of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis on vascular tone may depend upon blood vessel type or various pathological conditions. Intriguingly, the broad distribution of elabela/apelin and alternative isoforms implicates its distinct functions in diverse cardiac and vascular cells and tissue types. Finally, both loss-of-function and gain-of-function approaches have defined critical roles of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis in reducing the development and severity of hypertensive diseases. Thus, targeting the elabela/apelin-APJ axis has emerged as a pre-warning biomarker and a novel therapeutic approach against progression of hypertension, and an increased understanding of cardiovascular actions of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis will help to develop effective interventions for hypertension. In this review, we focus on the physiology and biochemistry, diverse actions, and underlying mechanisms of the elabela/apelin-APJ axis, highlighting its role in hypertension and hypertensive cardiovascular injury and dysfunction, with a view to provide a prospective strategy for hypertensive disease therapy.

Soil salinity seriously restricts rice growth, development, and production globally. Chlorophyll fluorescence and ion content reflect the level of injury and resistance of rice under salt stress. To understand the differences in the response mechanisms of japonica rice with varying degrees of salt tolerance, we analyzed the chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics and ion homeostasis of 12 japonica rice germplasm accessions by comprehensive evaluation of phenotype, haplotype, and expression of salt tolerance-related genes. Abstract A doublet earthquake event including two main shocks with a magnitude larger than Mw 6.0 occurred on 1 July 2022 in the Zagros fold‐and‐thrust belt, southeast Iran. The coseismic InSAR deformation field shows that this event caused significant surface uplift due to fault‐related folding in the seismic zone. The estimated preferred faulting model suggests that a higher dip angle fault (maximum slip of ∼1.1 m), and an overlying gentle dipping fault (maximum slip of ∼1.2 m) within the Bandar‐e‐Lengeh Anticline, are responsible for the first and second main shocks, respectively. The calculated Coulomb failure stress change suggests that the first main shock and its Mw 5.7 aftershock have a significantly positive triggering effect in the second main shock. The accumulated interseismic strain should have been partly released by the two main shocks. Finally, the salt diapir activity may affect the generation of the earthquake in the seismic zone.

Japonica-specific markers are crucial for the analysis of genetic diversity, population structure, evolutionary traits, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) of japonica germplasm accessions. This study developed 402 insertion–deletion (InDel) polymorphic markers based on the re-sequencing of four japonica rice landraces and three japonica rice cultivars. These InDel markers were uniformly distributed across 12 rice chromosomes with high polymorphism and good amplification specificity. The average density of InDel markers on each chromosome was 0.95 Mb per locus. On the basis of these InDel markers, genetic diversity analyses and GWASs for 12 salt-tolerance-related traits were performed using 182 japonica rice accessions. In total, 1204 allelic variants were detected, with an average of 3.00 alleles and 2.10 effective alleles per locus. Based on population structure analysis, 182 japonica rice accessions were divided into four subgroups. The GWAS analyses revealed a total of 14 salt-tolerance-related InDels, which were located on chromosomes 1–5, 9, 10, and 12. Twenty-eight allelic loci were identified, explaining 6.83% to 11.22% of the phenotypic variance. Haplotype analysis detected six InDel markers associated with salt-tolerance-related traits that were significantly different (p < 0.05) or highly significantly different (p < 0.01) among different haplotypes. These markers can be utilized for the molecular identification of salt-tolerant rice germplasm accessions.

The concept of the soil phosphorus storage capacity (SPSC) was successfully used to evaluate the phosphorus (P) loss risk and the P retention capacity of acidic soil. This study extended the concept of SPSC from acidic soil to neutral or alkaline soil. A total of 95 surfaces (0-10 cm) soil samples were collected from the Yellow River Delta (YRD) for use in this study. Batch sorption experiments, correlation analysis, stepwise regression, and a split-line model were used to calculate the threshold value of the degree of P saturation (DPS). The SPSC was developed based on the DPS threshold value. Based on a DPS threshold value of 11.5%, we developed the following equation for calculating the SPSC: SPSC = (11.5% - soil DPS) × (0.113 × SOM (soil organic matter) + 1.343 × CaCO3). In the continuous system in this watershed, from wetland to farmland, the SPSC for vegetable fields (-94.7 ± 79.1 mg/kg) was lowest and that of the restored wetland (76.3 ± 26.1 mg/kg) was the highest. Along the transition zone in the YRD, both the natural soil development and human alternations significantly affected the soil P loss/retention capacity. In terms of P storage, the restored wetlands are the highlands for P retention and the vegetable fields contribute significantly to the P loss in the YRD. As a result, we strongly recommend that the restored wetlands be fully utilised for P retention and that P fertiliser no longer be applied to the vegetable fields to prevent P loss into the watershed.

IntroductionThis work aimed to comprehensively assess the risk factors affecting myopia in children to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies. To this end, data from database were employed to assess the relationship between the incidence of myopia and its risk factors.MethodsWe searched eight databases online in June 2022. Cohort studies were included that measured the connection between risk factors and myopia. Eligibility was not restricted by language. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to measure the risk of bias and conducted GRADE evaluation to determine the certainty of evidence. Potential risk factors with positive or negative results were seen. Inplasy Registration: https://inplasy.com/inplasy-2022-4-0109/.ResultsEvidence that risk factors for myopia are mixed, comprising both positive (20) and null (17) findings. In 19 cohort studies on 3578 children, girls were more likely to develop myopia (RR: 1.28 [1.22-1.35]). Myopia can occur at any age, from early childhood to late adulthood. Children whose parents had myopia were more likely to develop myopia. Longer outdoor activities time (RR: 0.97 [0.95-0.98]) and less near-work time (RR: 1.05 [1.02-1.07]) appeared to be significantly decrease the incidence of myopia. Children with lower SE, longer AL, a lower magnitude of positive relative accommodation, worse presenting visual acuity, deeper anterior chamber, and thinner crystalline lens may be related to myopia onset. The burden of myopia in underprivileged countries is higher than in developed countries (RR: 5.28 [2.06-13.48]). The quality of evidence for the evaluated factors was moderate to low or very low.ConclusionsGenetic factors, environmental factors (such as excessive use of electronic products, and poor study habits) and lifestyle factors (such as lack of outdoor activities, poor nutrition, etc.) are the main risk factors for myopia in children. Myopia prevention strategies should be designed based on environmental factors, gender, parental myopia and eye indicators in order to explore a lifestyle that is more conducive to the eye health of children.

Determining the composition, particle size distribution and concentration changes of suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere is important for evaluating the quality of air and its impact on public health. The scattering and absorption of light by suspended particulate matter can change the polarization state of light, which can be used to extract characteristic information of measured particles. Firstly, we use our previously developed multi-angle simultaneous polarization measurement device to monitor the particulate matter around Dianshan Lake, Shanghai, and obtain high-throughput, high-dimensional Stokes data for nearly 1 month. The correlation between the Stokes data measured and the reference concentrations of five suspended particulate matter (Si, K, Fe, Ca, and Zn) was analyzed using the Periodical canonical correlation analysis (PCCA) method. The study shows a strong correlation between the three Stokes vectors and the concentrations of two types of suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere. Moreover, a prediction model for the concentration change of suspended particles was proposed by combining the locally weighted linear regression (LWLR) and the auto regressive moving average (ARMA) model. The prediction results on the concentration change of K and Fe in the atmosphere verified the validity of our method. The research in this work offers the possibility of continuous analysis and prediction of atmospheric suspended particulate matter in real environments.

In this study, we present a flat-field Mueller matrix imaging system to reduce the reconstruction error caused by critical illumination. This study demonstrates that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the reconstructed images is improved by about eight times by adding a beam shaping module made up of microlens arrays to a traditional Mueller system. The scalar diffraction theory and polarization numerical simulation show the ability of the new device in minimizing the adverse effects of light source noise on polarization reconstruction results. Finally, the experiment results on standard resolution board, porous anodic alumina, and real pathological slices further confirm the superiority of the flat-field Mueller system in precisely identifying sample structure and quantitative differences between various polarization parameters (depolarization ratio Δ, linear retardance δ, and birefringence orientation θ), demonstrating the potential of flat-field polarization imaging in pathological diagnosis and tissue characteristic extraction.

Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), as a kind of endogenous non-coding RNA, have been implicated in ischemic heart diseases and vascular diseases. Based on theirs high stability with a closed loop structure, circRNAs function as a sponge and bind specific miRNAs to exert inhibitory effects in heart and vasculature, thereby regulating their target gene and protein expression, via competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanism. However, the exact roles and underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases remain largely unknown.Methods and Results: High-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to analyze the differentially expressed (DE) circRNAs in aortic vascular tissues of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Compared with the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, there were marked increases in the levels of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean blood pressure in SHR under awake conditions via the tail-cuff methodology. Totally, compared with WKY rats, 485 DE circRNAs were found in aortic vascular tissues of SHR with 279 up-regulated circRNAs and 206 down-regulated circRNAs. Furthermore, circRNA-target microRNAs (miRNAs) and the target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) of miRNAs were predicted by the miRanda and Targetscan softwares, respectively. Additionally, real-time RT-PCR analysis verified that downregulation of rno_circRNA_0009197, and upregulation of rno_circRNA_0005818, rno_circRNA_0005304, rno_circRNA_0005506, and rno_circRNA_0009301 were observed in aorta of SHR when compared with that of WKY rats. Then, the potential ceRNA regulatory mechanism was constructed via integrating 5 validated circRNAs, 31 predicted miRNAs, and 266 target mRNAs. More importantly, three hub genes (NOTCH1, FOXO3, and STAT3) were recognized according to PPI network and three promising circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory axes were found in hypertensive rat aorta, including rno_circRNA_0005818/miR-615/NOTCH1, rno_circRNA_0009197/ miR-509-5p/FOXO3, and rno_circRNA_0005818/miR-10b-5p/STAT3, respectively.Conclusions: Our results demonstrated for the first time that circRNAs are expressed aberrantly in aortic vascular tissues of hypertensive rats and may serve as a sponge linking with relevant miRNAs participating in pathogenesis of hypertension and related ischemic heart diseases via the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNAnetwork mechanism.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly disabling condition associated with alterations in multiple neurobiological systems, including increases in inflammatory function. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) decreases inflammation, however few studies have examined the effects of non-invasive VNS on physiology in human subjects, and no studies in patients with PTSD. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of transcutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS) on inflammatory responses to stress. Thirty subjects with a history of exposure to traumatic stress with (N ​= ​10) and without (N ​= ​20) PTSD underwent exposure to stressful tasks immediately followed by active or sham tcVNS and measurement of multiple biomarkers of inflammation (interleukin-(IL)-6, IL-2, IL-1β, Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFα) and Interferon gamma (IFNγ) over multiple time points. Stressful tasks included exposure to personalized scripts of traumatic events on day 1, and public speech and mental arithmetic (Mental Stress) tasks on days 2 and 3. Momentum to phase out unabated coal use is growing globally. This transition is critical to meeting the Paris climate goals but can potentially lead to large amounts of stranded assets, especially in regions with newer and growing coal fleets. Here we combine plant-level data with a global integrated assessment model to quantify changes in global stranded asset risks from coal-fired power plants across regions and over time. With new plant proposals, cancellations, and retirements over the past five years, global net committed emissions in 2030 from existing and planned coal plants declined by 3.3 GtCO _2 (25%). While these emissions are now roughly in line with initial Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement, they remain far off track from longer-term climate goals. Progress made in 2021 towards no new coal can potentially avoid a 24% (503 GW) increase in capacity and a 55% ($520 billion) increase in stranded assets under 1.5 °C. Stranded asset risks fall disproportionately on emerging Asian economies with newer and growing coal fleets. Recent no new coal commitments from major coal financers can potentially reduce stranding of international investments by over 50%.

Significance: Most biological fibrous tissues have anisotropic optical characteristics, which originate from scattering by their fibrous microstructures and birefringence of biological macromolecules. The orientation-related anisotropic interpretation is of great value in biological tissue characterization and pathological diagnosis. Aim: We focus on intrinsic birefringence and form birefringence in biological tissue samples. By observing and comparing the forward Mueller matrix of typical samples, we can understand the interpretation ability of orientation-related polarization parameters and further distinguish the sources and trends of anisotropy in tissues. Approach: For glass fiber, silk fiber, skeletal muscle, and tendon, we construct a forward measuring device to obtain the Mueller matrix image and calculate the anisotropic parameters related to orientation. The statistical analysis method based on polar coordinates can effectively analyze the difference in anisotropic parameters. Results: For those birefringent fibers, the statistical distribution of fast-axis values derived from Mueller matrix polar decomposition was found to exhibit bimodal characteristics, which is a key point in distinguishing the single-layer birefringent fiber sample from a layered, multioriented fibrous sample. The application conditions and interference factors of anisotropic orientation parameters are analyzed. Based on the parameters extracted from the orientation bimodal distribution, we can evaluate the relative change trend of intrinsic birefringence and form birefringence in anisotropic samples. Conclusions: The cross-vertical bimodal distribution of the fast axis of anisotropic fibers is beneficial to accurately analyze the anisotropic changes in biological tissues. The ANSYS software is introduced to reproduce the in-line and staggered sphere packed bed model. To investigate the influence of model on the heat transfer and flow characteristics in the high temperature packed bed, numerical simulations of pore-level was used to numerically appreciate the changes of pressure drop, temperature and velocity. The simulation values qualitatively agree with the experimental result. The results show that the pressure drop in high temperature packed bed increases significantly. The pressure drop increases about 3200 Pa when the inlet velocity is 0.33-0.73 m/s. The model has significant influence on the average temperature of solid and gas phases. Compared with the in-line arrangement, the heat wave transfer is slower and the temperature is slightly higher by 20 K in the staggered model. The average velocity in the structured packed bed increases and decreases periodically. In staggered model, the velocity disturbance is more significant. These findings are helpful for understanding transport phenomena in packed beds as well as the design of high efficiency reactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
