Abstract

Conventionally, a six-step inverter used in Active Power Filter (APF) to mitigate the harmonics in power system because of its simplicity and easy to control. However, six-step inverter only operates in low voltage rating for APF and additional transformer is essential to operate in high voltage rating of APF. There are three types of Multilevel Inverter (MLI) namely Cascaded H-Bridge, Neutral Point Diode Clamped (NPC) and Flying Capacitor (FC). Among the types of Multilevel Inverter (MLI), only the Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB MLI) can be used to replace the conventional six-step inverter due to its capability to work in high voltage rating, less used power device and easy to control. This paper evaluates a three-phase three-wire shunt APF based on six-step conventional inverter and Nine Level CHB MLI using Indirect Current Control (ICC) schemes. MATLAB/Simulink tools are used to model and simulate both of algorithms, consisting of three main parts namely harmonic extraction algorithm, DC link algorithm and switching algorithm. In MATLAB/Simulink, the model was created and validated the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) line current with different frequency modulation (mf) values. According to the findings, the increasing of frequency modulation will produce a good result of THD line current. The THD line current produced by both algorithms is less than 5%, which is the permitted value as stated in IEEE 519. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the performances of non-independent speed control of dual-pmsm (permanent magnet synchronize motor) drives by a single three-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) using control of mean and differential torque technique. In general, there are two types of control strategies for dual-motor drives. One is master-slave technique and another one is mean control technique. For mean control technique, this study chooses mean and differential approach for the motors parameters and using average value for the voltage space vector. The advantages of dual-motor drives fed by a single inverter topology are, it can decrease the size and cost compared to the dual-motor drives which used by individual inverter, either in industrial or in traction applications. However, by using a single three-phase inverter, the topology only restricted for the same operating conditions which are at the same speed, same parameters and same direction. The dual-motors are dependent (non-independent) on the other motor. It is can only be tested on different load operation. The analysis is focuses on speed and load variation for dual-PMSM drives considering the forward and reverse operations of the motor. This simulation model is modelled using MATLAB-Simulink.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of Direct Power Control (DPC) technique for the Three-Phase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) AC-DC converter under unbalanced supply condition. Unbalance condition will cause the presence of unbalanced current and voltages thus produce the negative components on the grid voltage as well as severe performance degradation of a grid connected Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). The input structures for conventional DPC has been modified with a three simpler sequence networks instead of coupled by a detailed Three-Phase system method. The imbalance voltage can be resolved by separating from the individual elements of voltage and current into symmetrical components called Sequence Network. Consequently, the input power relatively improved during unbalanced condition almost 70% through the measurement of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) from the conventional Direct Power Control (DPC) in individual elements which is higher compared to separate components. Hence, several analyses are performed in order to analyze the steady state and dynamic performance of the converter, particularly during the load and DC voltage output reference variations. 38. Improved magnetic behavior of hemicycle PM motor via stator modification.

Abstract

This article investigates electromagnetic performance of a hemicycle PM motor by introducing a little modification on both ends of a hemicycle stator. Prior to the investigation, an analytical model for the hemicycle PM motor weight is derived analytically for the purpose of comparison with a conventional design. Both motor weights are then verified and the hemicycle motor is found to have lighter weight than the conventional design. By having a proper design modification, an optimum motor performance is achievable due to improved magnetic permeance. Two designs that have different arc angle; i) 180° (188.5 mm arc length) and ii) >180° (204.2 mm arc length) are the subjects of investigation. It is found that a hemicycle PM motor in which arc angle >180° results maximum torque average with the smallest torque ripple and smallest cogging torque. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents sizing approaches to improve output torque performance in PM motor when partial stator body is removed. As the output torque performance is directly proportional to the electric loading, Q, modification on stator geometry affects the output torque performance and special procedures have to be taken to restore the desired output torque capability. Influences of split ratio, tooth body width, airgap and magnet thickness of magnet in PM motor with asymmetry stator design are carried out and the performance verification are referred to the back-emf, average output torque, torque ripple as well as cogging torque. From the investigation using 2D-Finite Element Analysis, optimum size of tooth body width and optimum number of coil turns result better output torque while other sizing approaches result no significant change as quick saturation took place.
